Outerlimits Adding Canopied Version Of SC 37 Catamaran

When it comes to building unforgettable canopied V-bottoms—think Mamba and Kahuna —and catamarans—think Jet and Hurry Up —no company does a better job than Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats . Of course, canopied offerings are the unicorns of the high-performance pleasure-boating world and they’re definitely not for everyone. But the Bristol, R.I., company has a knack for creating perfectly proportioned catamarans and V-bottoms for clients who prefer to have roof over their heads they hit the water.

High-performance catamaran buyers who prefer to have a roof over their heads will have that option with the upcoming canopied version of the Outerlimits SC 37. Photo by Pete Boden copyright Shoot 2 Thrill Pix .

So it was only natural that Outerlimits would release a canopied version of its outboard engine-powered SC 37 catamaran. According to national sales manager Dan Kleitz, the Outerlimits crew began considering the option before the first 37-footer was released in late 2021.  Like its open-cockpit sibling, six of which have been built and delivered so far, the six-seat canopied version will be powered by outboards from Mercury Racing .

“We already have three on order,” he said earlier this week. “It’s going to be a canopied pleasure boat, not a canopied raceboat converted for pleasure use. So it will have all the amenities and features you expect in an outboard-powered pleasure cat. We’re very excited about that model.”

Outerlimits will begin creating the deck tooling for the 37-foot cat this spring—the company already has the hull molds. The first model should be complete in early 2024.

“We’re doing all the canopy design in house,” said Kleitz. “We don’t think we’ll need to change anything, but if there are any hull modifications needed we’ll turn to Steve Curtis, who helped us with the original SC 37.”

Year In Review Sneak Peek: Outerlimits Goes Outboard Cat

The first Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats SC 37 catamaran—as in hull No. 1—we set up for photographer Pete Boden to capture in Key West, Fla., last month is a lot different than any other cat from the Bristol, R.I., custom powerboat company. Unlike the 46-foot, Mercury Racing stern-drive-engine-equipped Outerlimits cats created for Burton and Yvette Kirsten of Michigan and Washington’s Jason and Laurie Moe, the 37-footer is powered by Mercury Racing 450R outboard engines and is the first outboard-exclusive model from the builder.

Even in plain white with a few accents, the Outerlimits SC 37 catamaran is a knock-out. Photo by Pete Boden copyright Shoot 2 Thrill Pix .

And obviously, the open-cockpit SC 37 is a whole lot smaller than its canopied siblings.

Equally obvious? The SC 37 cat was simply white with a few accents, far from elaborate but nothing short of beautiful.

Still, we can’t wait to see one all dressed up. Kentucky-based paint wizard Stephen Miles of Stephen Miles Design handled the graphics for the Kirsten’s Jet and the Moe’s Hurry Up catamarans and he’ll be getting his hands on an SC 37 in early 2022. The famed graphics man can’t wait.

Just as we couldn’t wait to see the first SC 37 cat for ourselves. That the new model took longer than expected is old news, and we’ve been following the project since it was nothing more than a hush-hush idea. We were confident the finished product would be a beauty and we were weren’t wrong.

And as you can see from the image up top, the boat made it in time for the final photo shoot for our 2021 Speed On The Water Year In Review print edition, which goes to the printer this Friday.

And on that note, if you order your issue before January 1 you won’t have to pay shipping. So click here and do it now.

Outerlimits Delivers First 39-Foot Pleasure Catamaran

Powered by twin  Mercury Racing  turbocharged 1100 engines, the first 39-foot pleasure catamaran from  Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats  was delivered to Michigan performance boater Burton Kirsten, who ordered the all-carbon 39-foot canopied boat last year.

Kirsten picked up the second 39 SC from Outerlimits—the first one is an Ilmor-powered raceboat built by the  Spirit of Qatar offshore racing team—after a quick test session on Friday with Outerlimits consultant Steve Curtis, the manager/throttleman for the Qatar outfit, and hauled the boat back to Michigan to show it off on Lake St. Clair on Sunday.

“Dan Kleitz and the entire Outerlimits team did a great job with the boat,” said Kirsten, who is planning to bring the 39-footer to the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout next week. “They had to do a lot of engineering to make a canopy that wasn’t planned from the beginning. Overall the boat is amazing. The paintwork handled by Stephen Miles Design is great and the new Outerlimits interior looks and feels awesome. I’m grateful that Steve Curtis took the time to fly into Bristol (R.I.) and run the boat with me to test some prop options.”

According to Kleitz, who called the boat “bad ass,” the 39 SC reached 150 mph during the crew’s brief initial testing. With the right set of props, which Outerlimits is ordering for Kirsten, Kleitz believes the boat should reach a top speed in the high-150-mph or low-160-mph range.

“We didn’t have much time to set up the boat and test it, but the things runs as good as it looks,” Kleitz said. “I think Burton is very happy with it. It’s going to get a lot of attention wherever he takes it that’s for sure.”

Kleitz said Outerlimits’ new clear, carbon-fiber, sit-down-style seats work well in the catamaran, which features three Garmin GPS displays, full air conditioning and seating for six in the cockpit that is the same size as the one Outerlimits uses for its 46-foot catamaran.

Editor’s note: Look for a full report on the 39 SC from next week’s Lake of the Ozarks Shootout and in the next issue of Speed On The Water magazine.
