Reasons to Charter a Yacht in East Africa

Blissful beaches.

East Africa doesn’t fall short when it comes to boasting some of the world's best beaches. Sugary shifting sands, warm Indian Ocean waters and colourful delights are ever tempting. Mozambique’s Bazaruto is all sandbars, scattered islands and dunes with dhows dotting the horizon and cheerful local beach bars keeping you satiated in ice cold beer. Zanzibar boasts a drool worthy collection of shores, from trendy Bwejuu to lively Nungwi where the party stays in full swing beneath the moon.

Spice and Seafood

From the heady nickname of Spice Island to the markets of Stone Town, Zanzibar’s foodie scene is certainly worth setting sail for. From the Zanzibar style Galette to the meat skewers soaked in spice, the Persian delights, and the tangy soups, every morsel seems to be heaven sent. Mozambique’s prawns are another perfect gem and the deep waters brim with thousands of different types of fish and seafood delights ready to be grilled, fried, smoked or stuffed into something simply delicious.

Sailing Safaris

Endless islands mark East Africa on the map as being a sailing haven. Mozambique boasts the remote Quirimbas Archipelago with its mangrove forests, community conservation projects, and in the south you can find the coral gardens down in the Bazaruto Archipelago. Tanzania entices you to go from the swaying grass seas of the Savannah to the evocative island of Zanzibar and beyond.

Where to Visit in East Africa

A picture-perfect paradise lined with soft palms, coral fringed shores, the scent of sizzling seafood and remote archipelagos crying out to be explored, Mozambique is an unexpected sailors paradise. You can surf down in the south, watch fluttering Dhow sails cross the blue, and even beyond being blissed out on the beach you can find museums and late-night parties in the capital of Maputo.

The Spice Island of Zanzibar is every inch as evocative as her name suggests. Stroll around the ancient Stone Town with its rich spice markets, fragrant feasts, and cultural crossroads spilling out of markets and chic sidewalk cafes. Venture beyond the town and onto those jaw-dropping sugary beaches where snorkelling and kayaking invite you to plunge right into some of the clearest waters in the world.

Start your yacht charter adventure in Dar es Salaam, a former fishing village that has boomed into Tanzania’s tropical thriving city. After getting your city kicks, you can explore the magic of Pemba Island with its lush vegetation, coral studded waters, and shifting silver sands. Home to some of the best diving spots in East Africa, few tourists make it this far, preferring instead to stick to Zanzibar, meaning the waters can truly be yours alone.

When to Charter a Yacht in East Africa

The Northern monsoon season pours down on Zanzibar between the months of late December until March. For those looking to charter the waters around East Africa, you will find sweet spiced winds and reliable conditions between June and October. This also combines with some of the best wildlife viewing in Tanzania. Those looking to catch the Great Migration as part of their safari and sailing session in East Africa would do well to plan to be in the bush between the months of June and July.

Zanzibar Yacht Charter

What to bring

You’ve planned your east africa yacht charter, you’ve booked, now it’s time to pack.

East Africa Yacht Charter

When packing for your East Africa Yacht Charter Holiday , keep in mind that a private yacht charter is vastly different from a holiday resort or a cruise ship vacation. As such, this may affect your usual packing routine. With limited room on board for luggage, packing for a yacht charter may require an element of restraint.

Here are a few tips and tricks to ensure you pack the essentials;

First and foremost it is important to remember that there is often restricted storage space on board a yacht. Therefore please ensure to take soft sided luggage which will be easy to fold away. Pack light and take only duffel bags for instance, which can easily be stored away. Hard suitcases are difficult to store and may even scratch and damage the gelcoat and woodwork.

Light summer clothing including bathing suites, light t-shirts, skirts and shorts are to be expected on board a yacht. Considering the climate of Zanzibar, you are headed for sun, sea and sand so be sure to pack clothes to keep you cool. Consider packing some light trousers & shirts and summer dresses if you intend to eat ashore. Also Kikoi’s are good for onboard the yacht or for the beach. If you’re thinking of taking to the water for some snorkelling or maybe a jet ski ride, a few old t-shirts to keep your skin protected from the sun is a good idea.

Most yachts will ask guests to abide by the “bare feet” rule whilst on board. A good pair of white rubber soled sandals should be ideal when roaming around the deck, though heels can damage the decking and black soled shoes can leave unsightly scuff marks making them an absolute no-no. Land shoes are fine for venturing ashore though remember to take them off as soon as you step back on board.

Accessories

Sunglasses, headwear and a high factor sun screen are absolute essentials when exposed to the sun, particularly if you intend to sun lounge for the best part of an afternoon. A good book or two, a personal music player such as an iPod and of course a camera are also necessities.

  • Leave your valuables at home, particularly things which are not waterproof.
  • Pack light, you may find you wear half the clothes you pack.
  • Leave room for souvenirs or pack an extra foldable bag for items you purchase while you’re away.
  • It is not uncommon for the wind to claim your hat, pack more than one.

East African Yacht Charters

The Quirimbas Archipelago

The Quirimbas Archipelago, located in the northernmost part of Mozambique bordering southern Tanzania, is a rarely visited hidden gem of East Africa.  Dotted with approximately 30 habitable islands and twice as many offshore reefs and tidal sand banks, the archipelago spans some 120 nautical miles, is recognised as an area of remarkable marine biodiversity for the region, and has been dubbed as the ‘Maldives of Africa.’  Despite its remarkable natural beauty, the Quirimbas, with iconic Ibo Island, are also an important centre of the region’s Swahili Coast and its history dating as far back as the 9th Century AD.

Inhabited Mainly By Artisan Fishing

Inhabited mainly by artisan fishing and small scale farming communities, only a handful of the islands consist of tourism developments in the form of resorts targeting international and local tourism.  This fact qualifies the archipelago as very much of an off the beaten track destination for tourism and is best visited on board one of our luxury yachts.  History of the ages, spectacular islands and pristine coral reefs, exceptional fishing, some of the best scuba diving locations in the world and an offshore sea mount that is home to the clearest waters in East Africa and healthy populations of large pelagic fish make the Quirimbas Archipelago a bucket list destination in East Africa.

Due to the logistics necessary to position a yacht there, we only run live aboard yacht charters to the area and include activities such as snorkelling, live aboard scuba diving, sport fishing, selective spearfishing and freediving.

An abandoned, burned boat and 2 missing men: South African authorities investigate maritime mystery

  • Copy Link copied

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) — South African authorities searching for a missing charter boat captain are concerned about possible foul play after they discovered his vessel burned and abandoned on a beach in neighboring Mozambique, but no sign of him or the unknown man who hired him.

The National Sea Rescue Institute raised the alarm over captain John Matambu and his passenger after they didn’t return to Sodwana Bay on South Africa’s northeastern coast on Saturday evening having gone out early that morning.

The charred wreck of Matambu’s speed boat, Magnum Too, was discovered by a search plane on Sunday in the Dobela area of Mozambique, some 170 kilometers (105 miles) up the coast.

“Both men remain missing in unknown circumstances,” the National Sea Rescue Institute said.

Matambu’s cousin told local media that a petrol canister and a medical kit were found near the boat.

The NSRI said some of the circumstances “appear to indicate that foul play may be involved.”

The man who hired Matambu to take him out on the 21-foot (6.4-meter) boat apparently gave false contact details, NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said. The booking was made for a man, his wife and a child, but only the man boarded the boat, Lambinon said.

“Hopes are that this has all been a misunderstanding, and foul play was not involved, but at this stage all possibilities are being examined,” Lambinon told national broadcaster SABC. “The fact that the boat has been found across the border is obviously the difficulty now.”

The NSRI received a report that the boat was spotted at 10 p.m. Saturday night heading north toward Mozambican waters, it said, the last sighting before its charred hull was discovered the following day.

The Police Sea Borderline Control agency and the Police Search and Rescue unit are also involved in the search. Authorities described Matambu as a well-known, experienced and respected boat captain in Sodwana Bay.
