Sailing Itineraries from Lavrion

Sailing from Lavrion usually means visiting the Cyclades , some of the most famous islands in the Aegean, and indeed the world! Lavrion is ideally situated at the south eastern tip of Attika, just 3 hours sailing to Kea (Tzia) and the start of your Cycladic adventure! Keep in mind that Istion also has a charter base in Alimos Marina and one way charters are occasionally available starting from Lavrion and ending in Alimos (or vice versa) usually for early and late season charters. They can be a good option for those who want to maximise their sailing time without having to backtrack!

The Cyclades

The Cyclades is a group of Islands lying amidst the amazing Aegean Sea . They are world famous for the beauty of the rough rocky landscape merging with the crystal-clear seas , the traditional white-washed houses and windmills, and the endless possibilities they offer for exploring and sightseeing . Needless to say, some of the islands are well-known, to put it mildly, for their nightlife (Mykonos anyone?).

Cruising in this archipelago definitely requires skilled and experienced sailors as the winds, especially in July and August, can easily reach Force 6-7 N-NW, with the norm being Force 4-5 N-NW. These are the annual winds known in Greece as the Meltemi . If you need a helping hand, our experienced skippers are available to take care of the sailing and show you the best hidden spots . With over 200 islands and islets, the Cyclades are a gem waiting to be discovered !

Lavrion Yacht Charter, Greece

Lavrion was once a thriving ancient site for the silver mining industry and a major contributor to the political and naval power of Athens just 60 kilometres away, and now this sleepy Greek town is seeing a revival in tourism, including luxury yacht charter cruises.

At 37 kilometres from the Athens International Airport, Lavrion becomes the perfect embarkation point for a Cyclades yacht charter and as a stopover to the Sporades to the north. Transfers to various locations within the city and its periphery are made through taxis and shuttle services; to get to Lavrion from the City of Athens and the International Airport, you must take E94 Road and drive down south.

Placed at the tip of the Attiki Peninsula, Lavrion is an unusual destination with an unusual attraction that makes it a year-round destination: From ancient times through to the industrial era, the slag from the silver extraction process was dumped into the sea. Over the centuries, seawater has penetrated deep into the slag and created perfect crystals of various minerals. These wash up on the shores around Lavrion in the stormy winter seas, where crystal collectors come to claim shortly after. Those who want to visit during the warmer summer months can still sett the rare and vibrantly-coloured minerals uncovered at Lavrion outside the old mine entrances, where the rubble was offloaded.

Today, visitors have access to the ancient silver mines, smelting works, and the Archaeological Museum of Lavrion, while nearby Thorikos there is the oldest and largest ancient amphitheatre in Greece . Few tourists are aware of the culture that this coastal region has to offer, despite Lavrion being a major terminal to the surrounding islands.

This large port city has updated its facilities and Lavrion Marina along with the Olympic Marina have berths to accommodate larger superyachts. From here, visitors have clear views of the Makronisus Island, which is rich in Scuba sites covering wreck and reef dives as well as plenty of quiet coves for sunbathing and water sports as well as a memorial park and churches to visit on a hike along the trails.

5 quick reasons to visit Lavrion:

Unique tourist sites, Great bays for water sports, Beautiful quiet beaches, Fantastic dive sites at Makronisos Island, Excellent place to being a Cyclades Yacht Charter

More about this part of Greece

The Cyclades is an enchanting destination filled with traditional architecture, bucolic countryside with hiking trails sketched into the verdant hills. Santorini is a popular destination and you will immediately notice the benefits of travelling around by luxury yacht to access the pristine coves and volcanic formations for which the island is known. Sample the results of the fertile soils at the vineyards and watch the sunset from the glorious powdery beaches.

Ios is even livelier at night than it is during the day, where beach parties are popular with the young, while culture seekers have plenty of alluring sights such as the windmills to take in, and fitness enthusiasts have hiking trails in addition to watersports amongst the secluded sandy coves.

Mykonos is another fantastic nearby destination ideal for mixed groups because of the range of activities on offer: Shop dine and party in coastal towns, then immerse yourself amongst the Scuba dive and snorkelling sites and sleep through the night in perfect silence surrounded by natural beauty.

Lavrion Yacht Charter Experiences

Due to its location and maritime value, Lavrion is an important destination to many travellers and at the peak of the summer season its population swells by 200% of its normal 7,000 or so residents. In addition to its close proximity to the City of Athens, it is also an important center of Greek culture and history.

While in Lavrion, you should include in your day activity visits to important landmarks and popular attractions like the Temple of Poseidon and the famed Mineralogy Museum, which was established through the ingenious conversion of the network of ancient tunnels underneath Lavrion.

The city is also the ideal place to sample and experience the deep flavours of Greek cuisine. There are several restaurants and other food venues that serve delectable treats and everything that is memorable about Greek cuisine. Most restaurants specialize in Cretan cuisine and these local dishes are regarded by experts as highly nutritious foods as these normally include fresh seafood and vegetables and olive oil.

A great thing about Lavrion is that it is just a short distance away from the other important tourist destinations that you want to visit during your Greek holiday such as Kea, Siros and Tifnos. From Lavrion, you can easily get a feel of the idyllic beaches and azure water of which the region is known for. And when you are done with your activities in Lavrion, you simply get on board your luxury charter yacht and set sail to the best holiday destinations within the Cyclades archipelago.

Things to Consider:

Yachting seasons & climate:.

The summer months are the best time to visit when the temperature in July and August is an average of 29°C/84°F and rainfall is at its lowest. The water is also warmest in August, however even in the coolest month of March the sea temperature averages 15°C/59°F.

Clothing to Pack For Your Charter:

For the summer, the temperatures rarely drop below 20°C/68° and therefore light layers with a protective covering for the winds will suffice. Take a sturdy pair of hiking boots for accessing the ruins and when visiting religious sites it is better to dress more conservatively by covering legs down to the knee and covering shoulders as well. If visiting in the winter, add a lightweight raincoat to the suitcase.

Main Ports and Marinas:

Lavrion Marina, Olympic Marina,

Famous Restaurants & Clubs:

Karafaki Restaurant, Psaroú Restaurant, Melōdeion Bar

A Must See Attraction:

Archaeological Museum of Lavrion, Mineralogy Museum, Temple of Athena, Temple of Poseidon, Archaeological Site of Sounion, Thoriko Archaeological Site, Thoriko Ancient Theatre

Best beaches to visit in your yacht:

Asimaki Beach, South Lavrio Beach, Tsonima Beach, Daskalio Beach

Local Yacht Events:

Cyclades Regatta, Acropolis Regatta

Best time to go:

Temperatures of around 25°C/77°F begin as early as May in the Eastern Mediterranean and last long into September, extending the summer cruising. For luxury yacht charter groups intending to incorporate a number of land-based tourist attractions into their luxury yacht charter, this allows more flexibility for cruising outside of the busy late-July and August holiday period. August however is also when the sea water is a delightfully warm 25°C/77°F and Scuba divers looking to go deeper on their dives might find the temperatures easier to acclimatise to.

📜 Lavrion Brief History & Info

Listen to the yachting radio while reading our Lavrion Yachting Guide.

Everywhere you look in Lavrio, it’s as if you’re in an open-air museum, with relics of the town’s mining heritage. Lavrio is an iconic landmark in the Attica area, boasting an ISO 9001:2000 yacht marina with a blue flag, the third biggest port in Attica, from which numerous ships sail for the Cyclades and the islands of the eastern Aegean, and just a few minutes away from the Temple of Poseidon in Sounion.

Visit the old French ore loader in the port, the Hellenic Metallurgical Company’s clock tower, the factory of the French Company that now houses the Lavrion Technological and Cultural Park, the beautiful neoclassical buildings scattered throughout the town’s narrow streets, mostly built by mining companies, and the first working-class houses in the Kyprianos district.

Lavrio port harbor sailing yachting charter rental Greece

Lavrio’s history begins many years ago, approximately 3,000 BC, when the ancient Greeks began mining the area’s silver and lead ores. Their work halted in the 2nd century BC and was restarted many centuries later, in 1864, with the establishment of the business “Roux – Serpieri – Fressynet C.E.” by the Italian Gianbatista Serpieri at the request of the metallurgist Andreas Kordellas. The Lavrion Metallurgical Company, together with the Serpieri Company, began to develop the town of Lavrio around 1869. For the mining employees, the companies erected stores, schools, and housing. Lavrio’s industrial history comes to an end in 1977 as a result of the country’s de-industrialization. The facilities were closed in 1989.

Lavrio, along with Piraeus and Rafina, is one of Attica’s three ports. Every day, several ships sail from here for the Cyclades islands, the northeastern Aegean, and Kavala. Furthermore, the town’s harbor can handle a variety of vessels, and various yacht rental firms operate in the region since Lavrion is a great starting place for maritime expeditions.

Lavrio port sailing yachting charter rental Greece

Explore Lavrio on foot and marvel at the many magnificent neoclassical buildings, such as the first primary school, built in 1901, the old Town Hall in the main square, the two-story building that originally operated as a hotel called “Agglia” (England), as well as the new one, housed in an 1864 building that was the former residence of the director of “Roux – Serpieri – Fressynet C.E.” Stop by the Archaeological Museum, a typical example of 1970s architecture that houses exhibits from the area’s mining and metallurgical activity during antiquity, as well as vessels, tools, and stone jewelry from the Kitsos cave, funeral gifts from Thorikos and the surrounding area of Sounion, and so on.

The modest Mineralogical Museum of Lavrion and its distinctive mineral collection are just a few streets away, situated in a lovely 1873 structure that originally belonged to the industrial complex of the Hellenic Company’s ore washeries. The complex of the French Company, located at the town’s entrance (on the side of Mesogeia), is an exceptional example of industrial architecture from the era, and now contains the Lavrio Technological and Cultural Park. You may also visit the Handicraft-Industrial-Educational Museum, where you can participate in the program Memories of the Historical French Mining Company of Lavrio and enjoy a tour of the (outdoor) Park’s facilities upon request. Kyprianos, a 19th-century neighborhood erected by the French Firm for the lodging of their employees, as well as the Palm Tree Forest just in front of it, were both developed by the same company.

Lavrio port sailing yachting charter rental Greece

The surrounding neighborhood is also highly intriguing, so don’t limit yourself to Lavrio’s center. You may see the Thorikos archaeological site on Velatouri Hill, which is located a little outside of town. It is one of Attica’s earliest villages, and it was a metalworking center in the 5th and 4th centuries BC. The acropolis remains at the summit of the hill, including Neolithic to Middle Helladic finds and five vaulted chamber tombs from the Late Helladic (Mycenaean) era (1600-1100 BC). The neighborhood also has the ancient Thorikos theatre, which is said to be Greece’s oldest. It was built towards the end of the sixth century BC and is especially notable for its unusual ellipsoidal shape.

It is worthwhile to see the ore washeries and historic mines of Lavrio (the site can be visited upon consultation with the Archaeological Museum of Lavrion). The Mineralogical Museum of Kamariza is located near the hamlet of Agios Konstantinos, as is the 165-meter-deep Serpieri mine, which was developed in 1880 by the French Mining Company of Lavrion. The lifting tower and the ruins of the facilities may still be seen on the site, although both the site and the museum are currently closed owing to restoration work.

If the weather permits, you may also go swimming in one of Lavreotiki’s numerous beautiful beaches, such as Punta Zeza, Poseidonia, Asimaki, Thorikos, Agia Marina, and many more. A stop at one of the local bars for freshly grilled or fried fish against the backdrop of the traditional marble slabs on which fisherman sell their products is a must. Attica is a secure and appealing multifunctional destination that offers guests unique experiences all year, and Lavrio is one of the region’s well-kept secrets. Summer or winter, Lavreotiki is a fantastic place full of hidden gems just waiting to be discovered.

🗺️ Discover Lavrio

The derivation of the term, which is possibly the earliest of the Lavreotiki, is disputed among archaeologists; some suggest that the word Sounio derives from the verb save (sozo=to maintain, secure, retain), and might relate to the entire region or just the Cape. Later variations of the name confirm the origin of “sounos,” which meant “silver” in ancient Greek (or, more correctly, the area with the silver-rich subsoil). In Ancient times, the appellation “Souniefs” (Sounio residents) was linked with riches. Even now, though, the land is exceedingly pricey.

The Aegean Sea was named after Aegeus, King of Athens, who plunged to his death from the cliff near Cape Sounion. According to legend, Aegeus was nervously staring out from Sounion when he noticed a black sail on his son Theseus’ ship coming from the island of Crete. This led him to assume that his son had been killed in his fight with the Minotaur, a half-man, half-bull creature. On the Cape, two ancient temples were constructed: the great Poseidon temple and a lesser Athena temple. The surviving Poseidon temple is Doric in style and was erected during the Pericles era, from 444 to 440 B.C.

It was built with white marble from the Agrileza district. It was erected on the site of an ancient limestone temple. The former temple, which dates from the early fifth century, was destroyed by the Persians before it could be completed in 480 B.C. The Lavrio Archaeological Museum houses architectural remnants of the Temple of Poseidon. The Ionic temple of Athena, erected before the commencement of the Peloponnesian War, was located at the lowest point of the hill to the east (in about 431 B.C.). When the temple was abandoned in the first century A.D., certain elements of it were taken to Athens to embellish other temples. Other deities revered in the Sounio region, in addition to Poseidon and Athena, included the goddess Artemis, guardian of minerals, Demeter, Cybele, Hermes, the demigod Hercules, and others.

Ancient Ore Washery

There are historic ore washeries scattered throughout the Sounio National Park. Archaeologists uncovered the greatest complex of ancient washeries in the valley of Souriza, which has been partially recovered (some of the washeries can be visited). Corresponding bands have also been found in Megala Pefka, Agrileza, Bertseko, Dimolaki, and Synterina. It is worth a visit to see the ancient Athenians’ ingenuity and advanced technology in their endeavor to harvest valuable metals (silver, lead) from this soil.

Kamariza – Agios Konstantinos

The community you come through on the way from Lavrio to Anavissos is a former mining settlement in an area with a very favorable climate and diverse flora, just near the Sounio National Park. Close to the Serpieri’s shaft lies the Mineralogical Museum, as well as the churches of Agios Nektarios, the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Catholic), Agios Konstantinos, and Agia Eleni. Beginning the path to Sounio via the park, you will notice the “chaos,” a geological phenomenon, landslide, where a green recreation spot with excellent views of the town of Lavrio is located. Many mining infrastructures, such as vent wells, may be seen along the route, dating from antiquity to the current period (which wants particular attention). In addition, you will pass the church of Agia Triada, the ancient ore washeries, and Agia Barbara, as well as the church of Agia Paraskevi, shortly before reaching the main road of Sounio.

It’s at the town’s northeast corner. The hill Velatouri, where the historic theater sits, may be seen on the way from Lavrio to the power plant facilities (DEI). The Thorikos is one of Attica’s ancient villages; allusions to the location may be found in legendary literature. The acropolis remains at the top, including chamber tombs and a trace facility dating from the Neolithic to the Early Helladic and Middle Helladic periods. The theater, which is notable for its unusual oval shape, was established in the late 6th century B.C. as a natural hillside amphitheater and was later expanded in the mid-4th century. About the theater, there were residences, workshops, galleries, and a cemetery that were all built around the same period. The reconstructed antique ore washery and gallery entrances are located next to the theater (closed). The “temple of Dimitra and daughter” is a massive marble surviving Doric construction shaped double portico from the 5th century B.C.

Yacht charter in Lavrion

  • Veröffentlicht: 05.Sep 2022

If you are thinking about a sailing holiday in Greece, you can hardly miss the harbour town of Lavrion. Due to its location, Lavrion is a popular destination for sailors. Many yacht charters have also settled here. And also for INFINITY.YACHT.S, one of the leading yacht charter offers, Lavrion is the home base. More precisely: the Olympic Marine. Here you can read everything you need to know about yacht charter in Lavrion!

Location and history of Lavrion

Lavrion is a municipality in Attica, one of the most populous regions of Greece. Lavrion is located between the ancient sites of Thorikos and Sounion, right on the coast of the Aegean Sea. In ancient times there were silver mines here, which contributed significantly to the wealth of the city of Athens.

Lavrion: Popular destination for sailors

The Greek harbour town of Lavrion is a sought-after destination for sailors thanks to its excellent location. There are hardly any better starting points for sailing trips to the Cyclades or the Peloponnese. Lavrion also scores with its connection to the International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos in Athens (ATH), which is only about 38 km away and can easily be reached via an motorway.

The Olympic Marine Lavrion: home to numerous yacht charters

The Olympic Marine in Lavrion is considered the first privately operated yacht harbour in Greece. No wonder that numerous yacht charters have settled here. We at INFINITY.YACHT.S also have our base at Olympic Marine, the attractive marina in Lavrion.

Yet the Olympic Marine Lavrion is easy to approach, as you can orientate yourself by the large shipyard building and the breakwater. The marina has 680 berths and 700 dry docks for yachts with a water depth of up to 5.5 metres. In 2000, the marina was certified with the “Blue Flag”.

Sailing yacht charter in Lavrion

After a short journey from the airport in Athens (ATH), less than 40 kilometres away, our guests are warmly welcomed by the INFINITY.YACHT.S team at the Olympic Marine Base. If you have any questions about the transfer between Athens and Lavrion, our team will be happy to help and advise you.

Sailing trip: From Lavrion to the Cyclades

The INFINITY.YACHT.S team at the base will be happy to give you tips and tricks for choosing the most beautiful sailing trips in Greece. The Cyclades and the Peloponnese are certainly must-see destinations.

The Cyclades are a group of islands in the Aegean Sea and are one of the most popular holiday destinations in Greece. If you want to sail in the Cyclades, you should be prepared for a demanding area. The Meltemi, which blows in the summer, is quite strong with a force of 5 to 6 and more. It usually blows from the north. In spring and autumn, the wind usually blows from the south. Families and less experienced sailors who want to sail in a more relaxed way will find easier conditions west of Athens and Lavrion. Recommended are trips to the Saronic and Argolic gulfs and the coast of the Peloponnese. The Peloponnese is the area that extends furthest into the Mediterranean. It lies on the Gulf of Corinth, the Aegean Sea and the Ionian Sea.

Why should you charter a sailing yacht with us? Quite simple:

More information about Lavrion

The Greek coast has a Mediterranean climate . The air of the country is very clean and dry from spring to early autumn. There’s a lot of sunshine, while the amount of rain usually decreases from the west to the east. In summer, we almost never see any clouds in the sky. Rain is practically an unknown guest in the summer months. The sea can heat up to 23-25 °C from June to August. Even in October, it’s still 23 °C. The area of Greece is constantly windy, these winds, however, are always changing. The wind that dominates summer months is called Meltemi . From June, it blows from the northwest and the northeast. It reaches its full strength, from 5 to 8 on the Beaufort scale, in July and August. The sea-wind comes in late September or early October, which blows from the southeast and the southwest.

It’s a specifically southern wind, that dominates mostly in spring and fall with a strength of 2 to 4. Due to Greece’s typical winds, it’s most rewarding to plan a sailing route from the south to the north in spring and autumn, and from the north to the south in summer. The waving is preferable compared to the Croatian archipelago since there’s a greater distance between the Greek islands. The current flows counterclockwise in the Eastern Mediterranean Basin, and northward along the Turkish coast. The water flows southward on the Eastern Greek coasts, but from the west side of the Peloponnese Peninsula northern current dominates.

Laurium or Lavrio or Lavrion (Greek: Λαύριο; Ancient Greek: Λαύριον; before early 11th century BC: Θορικός Thorikos; from Middle Ages until 1908: Εργαστήρια Ergastiria)[2] is a town in southeastern part of Attica, Greece. It is the seat of the municipality of Lavreotiki.[3] Laurium was famous in Classical antiquity for its silver mines, which was one of the chief sources of revenue of the Athenian state. The metallic silver was mainly used for coinage. The Archaeological Museum of Lavrion shows much of the story of these mines.

It is located about 60 km SE of Athens, SE of Keratea and N of Cape Sounio. Laurium is situated on a bay overlooking the island of Makronisos (ancient times: Helena) in the east. The port is in the middle and gridded streets cover the residential area of Lavrio. GR-89 runs through Lavrio and ends south in Sounio.
