Where was Caddyshack Filmed?

Shuvrajit Das Biswas of Where was Caddyshack Filmed?

Described as one of the funniest sports movies ever made, ‘ Caddyshack ‘ has gained a cult following over the years. The story follows Danny, who works as a golf caddie at an upscale club to make enough money to get to college. Danny decides that he should cozy up to Judge Smails, who directs the caddy scholarship program. Throughout the movie, Danny has to deal with various challenges and eccentric characters. Among them are Al Czervik, a rambunctious newly rich member, who starts showing up at the club, and Carl Spackler, the nearly unhinged groundskeeper who engages in a war with the gophers destroying his golf course.

Almost all the action plays out at the Bushwood Country Club. Naturally, this might make you wonder where the club is located, and where ‘Caddyshack’ has been filmed. We have got you covered with all the details.

Caddyshack Filming Location:

‘Caddyshack’ has been filmed mostly in Davie, South Florida . However, some parts have also been filmed in Los Angeles . Notably, filming took place for 11 weeks in the Autumn of 1979. You can check out a tweet below, stating that the cast and crew decided to film in Florida, rather than entirely filming in Los Angeles, to avoid studio interference.

DYK, one reason #Caddyshack producers chose FL as filming location over Los Angeles was to keep it from studio executive interference. — Film Florida (@FilmFlorida) June 4, 2015

Since the golf scenes make up a significant part of the film, let us get that out of the way first. Most golfing scenes were filmed at the Rolling Hills Golf Club , now known as the Grande Oaks Golf Club . It is located at 3501 W. Rolling Hills Circle, Davie . The movie is set in the midwest, so the director hit upon a golf course that did not have any palm trees. You can check out an image of the golf course here.

Some of the waterside scenes and the dinner dance scenes were filmed at Boca Raton, a wealthy coastal resort. Filming took place at Boca Raton Resort & Club at 501 East Camino Real . You can check out a post about it.

‘Caddyshack’ might be a movie about golf, but it has a pretty famous swimming pool scene. It has been filmed at the Coral Ridge Country Club in Fort Lauderdale . You can check out the relevant tweet below.

Some of the other pool scenes have been shot at Plantation Country Club . However, it appears that the pool no longer exists, after renovations. Apart from that, ‘Caddyshack’ has also been shot at the Key Biscayne Yacht Club, and the yacht club scenes were captured at the Rusty Pelican Restaurant in Key Biscayne. You can check out a tweet about it here.

@bradaschenck if you're up turn on AMC, Caddyshack scene shot behind Rusty Pelican is on — @heartcenteredmaria (@vicequeenmaria) June 22, 2009

Los Angeles:

At the beginning of ‘Caddyshack,’ when we see Danny ride his bike, the scene is filmed at Bel Air on Sunset Blvd . He also rides the bike on the street with train tracks. It appears to be at the intersection of Mission Street and Meridian Avenue, South Pasadena . It is also very close to the house where ‘Halloween’ was filmed. You can check out a relevant tweet below.

https://twitter.com/TheZigZ/status/1030774856873205760

Danny’s house, where he climbs down the ladder, gets his bike from the porch and rides off, still exists. It is at 232 N Avenue 54 Los Angeles . You can check out a YouTube clip detailing the scenes filmed at this house while giving you some more information about the movie.

Reports suggest that scenes were shot at Wilson & Harding Golf Courses, at Griffith Park , and Woodland Hills Country Club as well. Therefore, it is evident that ‘Caddyshack’ has made good use of the locations in Florida and Los Angeles, to play out a story that has become an iconic part of Hollywood history.

The 20 Funniest Lines In Caddyshack, Ranked

The best of the best from one of the best ever

Caddyshack is easily one of the best sports comedies , not to mention one of the most quotable movies of all time. Whether you’re a golfer or not doesn't matter, it’s filled with lines that make you guffaw every time you hear them. Anchored by four brilliant comedic performances from Rodney Dangerfield, Chevy Chase , Bill Murray , and Ted Knight, this list could easily be 100 quotes long. We’ve narrowed it down to the 20 best.

Rodney Dangerfield and Ted Knight in Caddyshack

20. You Must’ve Been Something Before Electricity!

There are so many classic Rodney Dangerfield one-liners and insults in Caddyshack it’s hard to pick just a few, but one that has to be on any list comes during dinner at the club. As Dangerfield’s character, Al Czervik, walks past Judge Smails’ (Knight) dinner guests, insulting each as he goes, he lands his best for Mrs. Smails,

Oh, this your wife, huh? A lovely lady. Hey baby, you must've been something before electricity.

Brian Doyle Murray in Caddyshack

19. You Owe Me One Gumball Machine

Not every hilarious line comes from the “Big 4” of course. Bill Murray’s brother, Brian Doyle Murray, co-write the movie with director Harold Ramis and writer Douglas Kenney and made sure to give himself a classic. After Danny Noonan (Michael O'Keefe) and Tony D'Annunzio (Scott Colomby) get into a fight over the price of a Coke, Murray’s character Lou breaks it up.

You owe me one gumball machine. What's that candy wrapper doing there? Well don't you see it? Well pick it up!

Chevy Chase in Caddyshack

18. This Isn't Russia

Many of the classic lines are between Danny and Chevy Chase’s character, Ty Webb. When Danny explains that he “has” to go to college, Ty asks why anyone has to do anything. Pretty easy for a guy born rich that plays golf all day every day.

Oh, Danny, this isn't Russia. Is this Russia? This isn't Russia, is it? I didn't think so.

Ted Knight in Animal House

17. There’s A Lot Of, Badness In The World Today

To first-time viewers, Ted Knight’s amazing performance and Judge Smails might get overlooked against Chase, Murray, and Dangerfield, but Knight's performance is simply brilliant as the woefully out-of-touch judge. A character summed up well in one exchange between him and Danny before they presumably share a Fresca.

“Danny, Danny, there's a lot of, uh, well, badness in the world today. I see it in court today. I've sentenced boys younger than you to the gas chamber. Didn't wanna do it, but felt I owed it to them. The most important decision you can make right now is what do you stand for, Danny? Goodness... or badness?”

Scene from Caddyshack

16. Ahoy Polloi

Smails’ nephew Spalding (John F. Barmon Jr.) is also a source of constant joy when watching Caddyshack , with some of the most underrated moments in the whole movie. Usually, he’s being berated by his uncle, but when Danny shows up at the yacht club way overdressed, Spalding finally gets to punch down on someone, calling Danny out for his choice of outfit,

Ahoy polloi... where did you come from, a scotch ad

Ted Knight in Caddyshack

15. Mow My Lawn

In a moment when Danny thinks he’s finally being accepted by the judge as an equal, that all comes crashing down in an instant. Judge Smails’ explains he having a party to christen his new boat, and before the party, he asks Danny.

How would you like to come over and mow my lawn?

Bill Murray in Caddyshack

14. Who Are The Gopher’s Allies?

Hapless greenskeeper Carl Spackler (Bill Murray) might have some of the most quoted lines by people duffing around courses, but it’s his battle with the varmint infestation that occupies most of his time in the movie. Finally, at the end, a desperate Spackler decides it’s time to unleash the big guns, almost literally. He shapes two pieces of plastic explosives like friends of the gopher in an attempt to blow the animal sky-high.

I got to get into this dude's pelt and crawl around for a few days. Who's the gopher's ally? His friends. The harmless squirrel and the friendly rabbit.

Ted Knight in Caddyshack

13. Hey! You Scratched My Anchor!

Smails’ christening of his sloop “The Flying Wasp” was supposed to be a triumphant moment for the judge. Instead, his nemesis Al Czervik has other plans. In his boat with a dingy bigger than Smails’ whole boat, he tears across the lake after spotting “his buddy” at the dock posing for pictures. When Czervik finally comes to a stop just inches from the sloop, he drops his anchor straight through it, angry about the damage it does to his anchor.

Ted Knight and Chevy Chase in Caddyshack

12. Don’t Sell Yourself Short

In one of the funniest exchanges in the movie, Judge Smails’ confronts Ty Webb about not playing with him in a competition of the best golfers in the club. Smails implores him, “You know, you should play with Dr. Beeper and myself. I mean, he's been club champion for three years running and I'm no slouch myself.” Webb's response is exactly the tone you'd expect.

Don't sell yourself short, judge. You're a tremendous slouch

Chevy Chase in Caddyshack

11. Skinny Skiing And Bullfights

Once you've watched Caddyshack a few dozen times, you start to pick up on some of the subtler jokes, and there are a lot of them. Like the time Ty Webb tries to hit on the “innocent” Lacy Underall (Cindy Morgan), who is clearly more worldly than Ty expects. When asked what she likes to do, she certainly doesn’t seem boring,

I enjoy skinny skiing, going to bullfights on acid…

Bill Murray in Caddyshack

10. Kill All The Golfers

Carl Spacker doesn’t just have to battle with the gopher, he also battles with the head greenskeeper, who is apparently named Sandy. With a thick Scottish accent, Sandy’s attempts to give Carl his marching orders are lost in the pond, so to speak. While explaining to Carl that he must kill all the gophers, Carl misunderstands and offers a reasonable answer for what he thinks the request is,

Check me if I'm wrong Sandy, but if I kill all the golfers, they're gonna lock me up and throw away the key…

Ted Knight and Chevy Chase in Caddyshack

9. By Height

Before Smails’ asks Webb to join him on the course with Dr. Beeper, he learns that Ty doesn’t even keep score of his rounds. “Oh, well, how do you measure yourself with other golfers,” Smails asks. “By height,” Ty incredulously responds.

Bill Murray and Chevy Chase in Caddyshack

8. Pond Out Back

In one of the funniest scenes in the movie, Ty Webb finds himself forced to play through Carl’s ramshackle home. Carl seems to know that Ty lives “on Briar” and asks if he’s got a pool. Ty's response is one of the most quoted lines in the movie,

We have a pond in the back. We have a pool and a pond... Pond'd be good for you.

Billy Murray in Caddyshack

7. This Is A Hybrid

In the same scene, after Carl explains how he’s studying to become head greenskeeper and solve his credit problems, he fires up “one of those big, Bob Marley joints” to share with Ty. Carl explains that he invented the grass they are smoking, a hybrid that will get you high, and withstand the rigors of heavily-trafficked areas of a golf course. Cannonball coming!

This is a hybrid. This is a cross of bluegrass, Kentucky bluegrass, featherbed bench and northern California sinsemilla. The amazing stuff about this is that you can play 36 holes on it in the afternoon, take it home and just get stoned to the bejesus belt that night on this stuff. I got pounds of this stuff.

Ted Knight in Caddyshack

6. Ditch Diggers

When Danny caddies for the judge, he spends a lot of time vaguely hinting that he hopes to go to college one day, but doesn’t have the means to afford it. In a hysterical exchange between the poor caddy and the rich judge, Danny tells him he just doesn’t know how he’s going to pay for college. The ever-enlightened Smails replies with the oft-repeated line,

The world needs ditch diggers, too.

Chevy Chase in Caddyshack

5. Do You Do Drugs, Danny?

While lamenting the same problem to Ty Webb, Danny complains about how tough life is for him. Ty asks him one question, “Do you do drugs Danny?” Danny responds, “everyday.” Ty wonders then, “what’s the problem.” Ty also confuses Danny’s name quite a bit, calling him Timmy and Betty before explaining that he there’s nothing wrong with lumberyards and he, in fact, owns two of them. It seems Ty is also a big believer in doing drugs everyday.

Rodney Dangerfield in Caddyshack

4. Low Grade Dog Food

If it seems like Rodney Dangerfield has been ignored, don’t worry, he’s not. It’s just that some of the very best lines in the movies, indeed maybe all the best, are his. It would be unfair to leave everyone else out and just run through every insult and off-color remark the great Al Czervak makes. As mentioned earlier, the scene at dinner at the club is a stone-cold classic and before he gets up to take a shot at Smails’ family, he unloads on the staff of the club, telling his server,

Hey, doll. Could you scare up another round for our table over here? And tell the cook this is low-grade dog food. I've had better food at the ballgame, you know? This steak still has marks from where the jockey was hitting it.

Chevy Chase in Caddyshack

3. Dolphin Season

When Lacey arrives at Ty’s house, she sees a giant mess. There are uncashed checks for $70,000 laying around and Ty is busy straightening up the place by moving a water ski and a bow and arrow from the couch. He apologizes to Lacey, saying he’s “getting ready for the season.” “Duck?” Lacey asks. “No,” Ty laughs, “Dolphin,” and proceeds to clean up some more before offering her a previously opened bottle of flat sparkling water. Quite the charmer, that Mr. Wonderful is.

Bill Murray in Caddyshack

2. I Got That Going For Me

In one of the most often repeated parts of the movie, Carl has a helpless caddy pinned to a wall with the tines of a pitchfork as he tells him the story about how he used to be a caddy too. In fact, he was such a good caddy, that he seemingly took his skills to Nepal where he caddied for none other than the Dalai Lama himself. Even the caddy doesn’t believe the tall tale, but it makes for one of the funniest moments in movie history,

So I jump ship in Hong Kong and I make my way over to Tibet, and I get on as a looper at a course over in the Himalayas. A looper, you know, a caddy, a looper, a jock. So, I tell them I'm a pro jock, and who do you think they give me? The Dalai Lama, himself. Twelfth son of the Lama. The flowing robes, the grace, bald... striking. So, I'm on the first tee with him. I give him the driver. He hauls off and whacks one – big hitter, the Lama – long, into a ten-thousand-foot crevasse, right at the base of this glacier. Do you know what the Lama says? Gunga galunga... gunga, gunga-lagunga. So we finish the eighteenth and he's gonna stiff me. And I say, "Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know." And he says, "Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness." So I got that goin' for me, which is nice

Rodney Dangerfield in Caddyshack

1. This Hat!

Of course, there can only be one character at the top of this list and it has to be the boorish and incredible, Al Czervak. Audiences meet Al as he pulls into the parking of the club, alongside his associate Mr. Wang. They are there to play a game of golf as a guest of the Scotts. When they make their way into the pro shop, Al wants to set Wang up with all the gear and starts listing things he and Mr. Wang need, finally landing a colorful hat. After making fun of the hat and anyone that would buy it, he sees Smails’ wearing the same hat and responds in a way that only Czervak (and Dangerfield himself) could,

Oh, this is the worst-looking hat I ever saw. What, when you buy a hat like this I bet you get a free bowl of soup, huh? Oh… it looks good on you though!

Given that Caddyshack is one of the best '80s movies of all time , there are many more classic lines to quote . One could make a list 100 quotes long and still find more that were hard to cull. There are also, of course, quite a few jokes that aren't anywhere near appropriate in a more enlightened age, but we'll leave that viewers to decide where those might fit it.

"Hey, everybody! We're all gonna get laid!" — Al Czervik

A 1980 American comedy film directed by Harold Ramis , starring Chevy Chase , Rodney Dangerfield , Ted Knight , and Bill Murray .

Danny Noonan ( Michael O'Keefe ) is a young caddy at Bushwood Country Club who has no idea about where his future will lead. His best chance at getting his life on track is to earn a caddy scholarship from Judge Elihu Smails (Knight), the owner of Bushwood. Al Czervik (Dangerfield) is a boorish self-made millionaire who has an interest in purchasing Bushwood. Judge Smails takes an instant dislike towards Czervik, and soon there is conflict between them, the Judge and Danny, and the Judge and Ty Webb (Chase), the charmingly smart-assed playboy golfer who is helping Danny to figure out his real goals. In the meantime, Bushwood's deranged assistant groundskeeper Carl Spackler (Murray) wages war on a rampaging gopher which has been chewing holes throughout the course.

A sequel, Caddyshack II , was released in 1988, directed by Allan Arkush and starring Jackie Mason, Robert Stack , Dyan Cannon , and Dan Aykroyd , with Chevy Chase the only major carryover from the original cast. Being incredibly similar to the original, right down to its characters and gags, it regularly shows up on critics' compilations of the worst movies ever made.

Tropes featured include:

  • Accidental Pervert : In the opening scene Danny is accused of being one by his preteen sister after accidentally walking in on her in the bathroom.
  • In the scene where the Bishop (played by veteran actor Henry Wilcoxon) is having his best round of golf ever during a thunderstorm, he misses an easy putt, looks skyward and yells "rat farts!", and is immediately struck down by a bolt of lightning. The background music in this scene was from The Ten Commandments , in which Wilcoxon played the part of Pentaur.
  • In the sequel, Jackie Mason plays a character named Hartounian .
  • During the scuffle between Al and Smails, Al mutters, "I don't get no respect." Obviously, that was Rodney Dangerfield's catchphrase in his stand-up act.
  • All There in the Script : According to the original script and specials on the making of the movie, the character Maggie is an exchange student from Ireland. This explains her thick accent which goes unexplained in the final movie.
  • Ambiguously Evil : Smails is a jerk, but based on his claim of giving the death sentence to boys younger than Danny, he may be worse than that. We don't know how young they were, how many times he's done this, and how bad their actual crimes were, but it's an unnerving thought.
  • Amusingly Awful Aim : Jack Hartounian has a comically bad slice when he swings that makes the ball go on the order of 90 degrees or more off where he aimed it. In the climactic golf match, his caddy has him turn around to take advantage of it and send the ball where it's supposed to go.
  • And Starring : And Bill Murray as Carl.
  • …And That Little Girl Was Me : Subverted with Ty Webb telling the story about the guy "night putting" with the dean's daughter. Ty: You know who that guy was, Danny? Danny: You? Ty: Ha ha... No, that guy was Mitch Comstein, my roommate. He was a good guy.
  • Angry Chef : The chef in the club kitchen grabbing a cleaver to attack after his cooking is dismissed by Al Czervik as "low-grade dog food".
  • Animal Nemesis : Carl first tries to drown the gopher, then kill it with a sniper rifle, before finally settling on plastic explosives. The gopher still wins.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking : "Fooling Around on the Course, Bad Language, Smoking Grass, Poor Caddying."
  • With the exception of Michael O'Keefe as Danny, none of the actors use proper golf swings and their characters would not be able to hit the ball as well as they're shown doing in the film.
  • Under PGA rules (which the club is mandated to adhere to if they're recognized by the PGA; it's not made clear if they are note  Lou mentions that the match is illegal under Bushwood's club bylaws, meaning that regular PGA rules probably don't apply in this instance ), Smails would have won the game. When Danny putts, the ball stops at the edge of the cup. Under the rules, it counts as holed if it drops in the time it takes Danny to walk to the cup (it looks like an 8-foot putt, so figure 2-3 seconds), plus an additional ten seconds. Nearly a minute passes before the explosions drop it into the cup. Doesn't count, Smails wins. In addition, the explosions are an outside event affecting the area of play, so the explosions dropping the ball into the cup would also negate the hole.
  • Ty is an idealized version of Doug Kenney.
  • Danny for Brian Doyle-Murray to a lesser extent as not only did he work as a caddy, he had multiple siblings, including Bill.
  • Be a Whore to Get Your Man : Lacey Underall put this into practice before she meets and picks up Danny Noonan. At the Fourth of July banquet, Danny becomes sexually attracted to Lacey and Maggie informs him of her reputation. That only makes Danny grow even more attracted to Lacey. Later, when he's in bed with Lacey, Danny tells her that she's still free to have sex with other people.
  • Whatever you do, don't insult Bushwood in front of Smails.
  • Initially, Ty wants nothing to do with the conflict between Czervik and Smails. But then when Judge Smails invokes Ty's late father's memory to sway him to his side, Ty immediately sides with Czervik.
  • Betty and Veronica : Maggie is the Betty to Lacey's Veronica with Danny being Archie. Danny seems to end up with Maggie given her role in the ending celebrations.
  • Big Bad : Judge Elihu Smails' Jerkass nature drive the film's conflicts.
  • Bigger Is Better in Bed : Lacey Underall sees Tony D'Annunzio in a speedo, admires his bare torso and she's impressed by his package. She's also impressed by Danny Noonan's bulge.
  • Bizarre and Improbable Golf Game : Ty's specialty.
  • Black-and-Gray Morality : The main conflict is about grumpy, elitist pricks vs. funny, likable assholes.
  • Blindfolded Vision : Ty Webb demonstrates this with a blindfolded golf shot across water onto the green. Danny Noonan then attempts the same shot and hits into the water.
  • Bolt of Divine Retribution : Bishop Pickering is winning a game during a heavy rainstorm, at one point declaring, "The Good Lord would never disrupt the best game of my life." When he misses his final putt on the 18th hole, he shakes his fist at the sky yelling, "Oh, rat farts!" Cue lightning bolt.
  • Book Ends : The gopher dancing to "I'm Alright".
  • Bowdlerise : In the TV version, Al's last line changes from "Hey everybody! We're all gonna get laid!" to "Hey everybody! We're all gonna take a shower! ", which (a) is Out of Character for Al and (b) arguably sounds worse than the original line.
  • Busby Berkeley Number : The Pool Scene begins with one of these, a successfully absurd synchronized swimming sequence.
  • Butt-Monkey : Throughout the movie Smails is heckled and humiliated on the golf course, gets hit directly in the groin by a golf ball, damages his new boat during its christening, gets the same boat further damaged by Al's dinghy, and loses $80,000 in his high-stakes golfing match against Al, Ty and Danny. He ends the film running away from Al's two thugs to avoid paying up.
  • Character as Himself : The mischievous gopher gets this treatment in the trailer.
  • Cheaters Never Prosper : While it has nothing to do with his ultimate downfall, Smails regularly moves his ball from bad lies without taking a penalty stroke.
  • Chekhov's Gun : Carl's attempts to kill the gopher are just comedy. Then towards the end his attempts at dynamiting the rodent shake the course so much, that Danny's ball falls into the hole on the final putt, winning him the game for Al .
  • Classical Music Is Boring : The band is playing a classical tune one night at the country club. Wild-and-crazy (and filthy rich) Al Czervik shows up and throws a bunch of money at the band while asking them to liven it up. The band instantly breaks into "Boogie Wonderland".
  • Cloudcuckoolander : Ty and Carl. Never more clear than in the scene that's nothing but the two of them riffing.
  • Cool Old Guy : Al Czervik. Ty also acts the part, but is in his late 30s at the most.
  • Creator Cameo : Writer-producer Douglas Kenney appears as a guest in the dining room scene.
  • Cutting the Knot : When Smails tries to talk to Danny in his office, a lamp is in the way. After a few attempts to converse around it, he just outright throws it off the desk onto the floor.
  • Dance Party Ending : Right after the page quote.
  • Deadpan Snarker : Carl and Ty.
  • Decoy Protagonist : The film initially focuses on Danny and his need to earn enough money to attend college, but once the club members show up, they take over the film with their own plots and Danny's story becomes just a part of the film.
  • Happened to Danny over the course of shooting due to the excellent improv material that was generated.
  • Tony got it even worse. The original shooting script cast him as the second male lead and fleshed his character out considerably (being an inner city kid who embraces a working class life in contrast to Danny's angst over college), but it all got cut in favor of the adult stars.
  • Sandy McFiddish the greenskeeper had been the one fighting the gopher in earlier script drafts.
  • Discriminate and Switch : In a variant, Al brings his friend Mr. Wang to the country club. He warns the Asian not to admit to being Jewish because the club is restricted. ( Truth in Television : Asians were often thought of as pseudo-white due to their light skin color and greater likelihood of having money (due to immigration laws and the difficulty of immigrating across an ocean as opposed to a land border, or having been kidnapped into slavery en masse).)
  • Don't Think, Feel : Ty goes new-agey about golf, and then successfully hits the ball onto the green while blindfolded. Danny isn't nearly as successful. Ty: Be the ball.
  • Down to the Last Play : The match and the end of the movie is decided by the last putt on the final hole.
  • Bowdlerized in an NBC television edit of the movie in the early 1980s, where Danny's "Every day" was changed to "No way"
  • Drugs Are Good : The uncensored version, see above.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect? : Rodney Dangerfield as Al Czervik.
  • Everything Explodes Ending : Carl attempts to take the Gopher out once and for all by rigging its tunnel system with plastic explosives. The Gopher survives , but the concussion shockwaves of the explosions help Danny win the golf match at the end .
  • Evil Stole My Faith : One of the club members (who happens to be a bishop) has his perfect game of golf (in the middle of a raging storm) ruined by a single bad putt, turns to curse the heavens, and is being struck by lightning immediately. The next day, he's shown as a drunken mess proclaiming that there is no God. To top it off, he has a Beard of Sorrow after one day .
  • Fly Crazy : Carl is attempting to eradicate one gopher, and ends up blowing up the club's golf course.
  • Funny Background Event : Repeatedly. Perhaps the most noticeable is Spaulding repeatedly fouling his swings while Danny and Smails talk in the foreground.
  • The Gambling Addict : Caddy master Lou Loomis, who's introduced placing bets and later bets on whether or not Spaulding would eat his own boogers. Danny also explains to Tony that Lou raised the prices of the caddy shack's Coke machine because he's been losing at the horse track.
  • Gender Flip : Meta example. The part of Joey was originally written for a boy but transportation captain Hank Scelza suggested his granddaughter, Minerva Scelza for the role because she was a tomboy . Minerva improvised the part where she spins around while trying to carry Al Czervik's bag.
  • Golden Snitch : In the final game, Al changes the bet at the last minute to focus entirely on the putt, making the rest of the game pointless (if he hadn't, the game would have been a tie).
  • Groin Attack : Czervik accidentally nails Smails right on the bullseye with a golf ball. Czervik: "I shoulda yelled 'two'!"
  • Grossout Fakeout : This happens when a mischievous girl throws a chocolate bar in the club's pool, making people think someone crapped in it. When Carl drains the pool to investigate, he realizes it's a candy bar and takes a bite of it, causing one onlooker to faint.
  • Grumpy Old Man : Judge Smails, though he does cheer up when he's at the yacht club. For a little while, at least...
  • Hanging Judge : Judge Smails, played for laughs. "I've sentenced boys younger than [Danny] to the gas chamber. Didn't want to do it. Felt I owed it to them."
  • Hidden Disdain Reveal : After Czervik asks Ty to be his partner for the match against Judge Smails, Smails tries to persuade Ty to decline by pointing out how he and Ty's father spent years together in school, the war, and at the club building the establishment to what it is today. Once he's done, Ty agrees to be Czervik's partner and reveals to Smails that his father never actually liked him.
  • I Am Not Weasel : Obviously Played for Laughs when the gopher steals Al's golfball as he's trying to sink a putt. Al: That kangaroo stole my ball!
  • Idle Rich : Ty probably takes the cake. He owns a few lumberyards but doesn't seem to know where all of them are, doesn't bother cashing checks he receives because he's already rich enough that he doesn't need them, and spends all day playing golf to amuse himself.
  • Intergenerational Friendship : Ty regularly requests that Danny caddy for him and is happy to chat with and give advice to the lad while they're on the course. He even lets Danny take a few shots himself.
  • Wait. The gopher never kills anybody. (off-screen THWACK) Okay, except for that guy.
  • Jewish Smartass : Al is a brash fellow, and a walking borscht belt stereotype whose wealth is rivaled by his smart mouth; he is implied to be Jewish himself when he makes a quip to an Asian golfer telling the latter "don't tell 'em you're Jewish".
  • Kick The Son Of A Bitch : Al Czervik is abusive to everybody around him, but they all have it coming, with the possible exception of some of the caddies (and many of them snark right back at Al, which he seems to appreciate).
  • Large Ham : Ted Knight as Judge Smails, who makes Police Academy 's Captain Harris look subtle by comparison. (Smails to Danny when seeing the latter in bed with Lacey): " OHH-HOOOOOOOO! YOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUU!" (Smails to Al when the latter says he might buy the club): " BUY?!?! BUSHWOOD?!?!? YOU-HOO-HOO?!?!? ".
  • Likes Older Women : Carl likes to ogle the older lady golfers.
  • Lower-Class Lout : One of the themes of the film is comparing the behavior of the lower class caddies and other staff on the one hand and the wealthy club members on the other, and how they're not really that different.
  • Danny is the eldest of nine brothers and sisters.
  • It is implied that the D'Annunzio's might also be a larger family given the need to have three kids, one of them maybe fifteen, working at Bushwood.
  • Mathematician's Answer : Ty Webb gives a good one to Judge Smails after explaining that he doesn't play golf competitively: Smails: Well, how do you measure yourself against the other golfers? Ty: By height.
  • Meaningful Name : Lacey Underall.
  • Mistaken for Masturbating : Carl Spackler ... until the camera pans out and reveals that he's washing golf balls.
  • Mobile Shrubbery : Carl Spackler: Pay no attention to that bush, moving around over there by that tree, it's just a bush. Nothing to look twice at. Nothing to be alarmed about. This looks like it could be gravy.
  • Modesty Bedsheet : Danny and Lacey are under a unisex bedsheet that falls to their waists when they're making love.
  • Morally Ambiguous Doctorate : Dr. Beeper. He's not evil , but he often ignores his patient's needs to play a round of golf.
  • Most Definitely Not a Villain : Carl's war against the gopher eventually drives him to use plastic explosives, which he shapes like woodland animals. "Just a harmless little squirrel, not a plastic explosive or anything".
  • Mr. Imagination : Carl Spackler is a lowly groundskeeper who spends his days fantasizing about becoming a champion golfer, and provides his own narration as well.
  • Ms. Fanservice : Lacey Underall, again.
  • Murphy's Bullet : The movie has a Murphy's Golf Ball. One character has a slice so bad the ball goes the exact opposite direction he was aiming. So he turns around.
  • My Girl Is a Slut : Danny becomes infatuated with Lacey and he becomes more attracted to her after Maggie tells him about her reputation. Lacey later picks up Danny and takes him to bed. The two are then making love. During their pillow talk, Lacey's giggling shows approval of what he just said after Danny tells her: I want you to know that just because of this you don't have to stop seeing other people.
  • Never My Fault : The Judge throws his golf club in a fit of rage, and ends up hitting a woman knocking her unconscious. Danny takes the blame (to suck up to Smails) by offering the excuse that the grip on Smails' club was worn down; despite going along with this, Smails offers to pay for the damage he caused . Later, when Al drops the anchor from his yacht, smashing the Judge's sailboat, he exclaims, "Hey, you scratched my anchor!"
  • Never Speak Ill of the Dead : While announcing Carl Lipbaum's death, Lou gets very irritated at Tony making fun of the dead kid, even though Tony points out that Lou didn't like Lipbaum himself. Lou: Carl Lipbaum died last week in summer school from a severe anxiety attack. Tony: I heard he swallowed his vomit during a test. Lou: However it happened, he was a good caddy and a good kid. Tony: He was a brownnose, Lou! You hated him. Lou: Shut up!
  • Nice to the Waiter : One of Al's defining characteristics is that he tips frequently and obscenely high. Smails, on the other hand, tips Danny a whole quarter and offers him the "chance" to mow his lawn.
  • Nouveau Riche : Al Czervik.
  • Oh, Crap! : Al, after he drops his anchor right through Smails's boat. A fisherman also has this reaction to Al's huge yacht bearing down upon him while he's out on the water.
  • Oireland : Maggie O'Hooligan is an Irish exchange student working at the club for the summer and has a thick accent. Justified Trope as Maggie is an Expy of the teenage Irish girls who came to the US on work visas to work at the country club where Brian Doyle-Murray and Bill Murray had worked as teenagers.
  • One-Hour Work Week : Ty Webb mentions that he thinks he owns a lumber yard. When caddy Danny Noonan notes he doesn't spend much time there, his response is he doesn't know where it is. Ty is depicted as so fabulously wealthy that he has uncashed checks for thousands of dollars strewn throughout his house.
  • One Judge to Rule Them All : Whatever the official rules are for qualifying for the Bushwood Caddy Scholarship, it's clear that the only criteria that really matters is whether or not Judge Smails likes you, which is why Danny spends much of the film sucking up to him. During the finale, Smails flat out tells Danny that if he plays as Al's substitute in the big match, he can kiss the scholarship goodbye. Danny plays anyway, and it's implied that Al compensates Danny for his loss after the match (possibly out of his winnings from the match).
  • Outrun the Fireball : What the gopher has to do when Carl sets off the explosives throughout the tunnel complex. The gopher makes it.
  • Parents Walk In at the Worst Time : Judge Smails goes ballistic when he catches Danny and his sexually liberated niece Lacey together.
  • Once Danny gets Judge Smails out of trouble, he gives sincere thanks, starts acting nicer to him, and encourages him to pursue the caddy scholarship.
  • Smails also stops Spaulding from heckling Danny during his final put of the caddy tournament. After his victory he invites Danny to come to his boat's christening, though this is downplayed by the invite also including having Danny mow his lawn.
  • Once he's had time to calm down from his initial explosive reaction to catching Danny in bed with his niece, and after getting confirmation that Danny hasn't told anyone else about this, he lets the matter go. He then goes on to continue expressing interest in Danny, though this is downplayed given he somewhat ominously holds his scholarship over his head whilst having Danny pledge to be his buddy.
  • Pool Scene : The caddy invasion of the country club pool, which results in at least one topless female character.
  • The Pornomancer : Lacey Underall, again .
  • Pregnancy Scare : Maggie has one when her period is late after sleeping with Danny. He offers to marry her, but she refuses on grounds that it might not be his. She's later shown dancing happily after she turns out not to be pregnant after all.
  • Putting the Pee in Pool : Subverted . When a child throws a chocolate bar into the pool, everyone assumes that it is a large turd, causing a major overreaction from everyone. Nevertheless, it's one of the most memorable instances of this trope.
  • Random Events Plot : The film was originally written to focus on working-class kid Danny Noonan and his adventures working at a swanky country club. But this quickly took a backseat when the filmmakers decided to give the A-list comedian costars free reign to do what they did best, and the finished film is a large collection of hilarious and largely self-contained vignettes, with Danny only being treated as the protagonist at the beginning and end of the story. Not that this is a bad thing , since the movie probably wouldn't have become the beloved classic it is today had they stuck to the original plan.
  • Rescue Equipment Attack : Carl uses a fire extinguisher to hit a gopher, made out of explosive plastic, on the head.
  • Right Behind Me : Subverted when Al is commenting on the ugliness of a hat in the country club's shop. He turns around to see the Judge is right behind him and wearing the exact same hat, tells him it looks good on him, then turns back to his companion to roll his eyes and snicker at the Judge.
  • Road Runner vs. Coyote : Carl tries increasingly drastic plans to get a certain gopher.
  • Samus Is a Girl : While more keen-eyed viewers will have noticed already based on her voice, for others the pool scene can come as a shock when Joey, the youngest and smallest D'Annunzio, suddenly removes her ever-present baseball cap – thereby Letting Her Hair Down and giving a better view of her face – and then takes off her shirt to reveal a girl's swimsuit beneath.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Money! : Al Czervik's behavior is tolerated only because he brings a lot of money to Bushwood Country Club.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here : Carl actually does this twice — once when the bishop gets struck by lightning after his Rage Against the Heavens , and the other when he reduces Bushwood to a smoldering wreck in his attempt to kill the gopher .
  • Self-Fulfilling Prophecy : Al Czervik bets that Judge Smails will slice his drive into the woods. Despite claiming he never slices, this is enough to put the thought into his head, so he does indeed slice into the woods. Any avid golfer can tell you this happens all the time in Real Life .
  • Self-Made Man : Al Czervik has all the traits of Nouveau Riche : gaudy clothing, obnoxious behavior, but he is more likable than Judge Smails (because he's generous and friendly where Smails is stingy and mean).
  • Sexy Discretion Shot : When Ty gives Lacey a massage.
  • The sound effects Ty makes while putting seem to be those of The Six Million Dollar Man .
  • The epic music during the rainstorm golf game is lifted from The Ten Commandments (specifically, the "burning bush" scene).
  • Shower of Awkward : In the prologue, Danny walks in on his pre-adolescent sister Kathleen, resulting in the latter screaming in a Modesty Towel .
  • Slippery Swimsuit : During the caddy pool party, one guy gets his trunks yanked off (if one looks closely, he's wearing skin-tone briefs underneath), and a girl ends up losing her bikini top.
  • Slobs Versus Snobs : Invoked as a tagline, as the movie is set in a country club (full of snobs) being annoyed by a slovenly outsider.
  • Smite Me, O Mighty Smiter : Bishop Pickering is provoked by a ruined game to yell "Ratfarts!" at the heavens. He's promptly struck by lightning, and his caddy, Carl, slinks away. Then again, he was playing in a thunderstorm.
  • Smoking Hot Sex : Lacey Underall is smoking a cigarette lying naked in bed next to Danny Noonan after the two make love.
  • Spoiled Brat : Spaulding Smails, who doesn't even want to be golfing to start (he wanted to go play tennis), but his dad makes him anyway.
  • Spotlight-Stealing Squad : Even though he's supposed to be the protagonist, Danny's story arc is quickly overshadowed by the antics of his wacky co-stars (both in-universe and in real life).
  • Status Cell Phone : Al Czervik is shown to be eccentric/filthy rich right from the start. He has a telephone right in his golf bag, which he answers while out on the course. This was not a typical "brick" phone, but from what we could see it was more like a typical 1970s desk phone, complete with an acoustic ringing bell and a coiled handset cord.
  • Stealth Insult : Judge Smails: They tell me you're the man to beat this year, and, well, I'm no slouch myself... Ty: Oh, don't sell yourself short, Judge. You're a tremendous slouch.
  • Stealth Pun : Of the musical variety: Kenny Loggins ' song "Make the Move" plays during the sex scene between Danny and Lacey. "Make the move", indeed.
  • The Stoner : Carl is working on a hybrid of marijuana and turf grass, that can be used for both putting and smoking. He shares some with Ty.
  • During his golf game in the middle of a rainstorm, Bishop Pickering says to his caddy, Carl, "The Good Lord would never disrupt the best game of my life. I'm infallible, young fella!"
  • From the mouth of Judge Smails: "Gambling is illegal at Bushwood, sir, and I never slice!" Well, there's a first time for everything...
  • Those Two Guys : Moose and Rocko, Al's friends who help look for Smails' checkbook at the end of the film.
  • Title Drop : Brian Doyle-Murray , who curiously co-wrote the film, speaks the title when he answers the phone in his office, which is in the Bushwood Caddy Shack (the place where the club's caddies hang out while waiting for golfers in need of a caddy).
  • Toilet Humor : Swimming pool + Baby Ruth bar = Doodie!! Taken up to eleven when Carl recognizes it as a candy bar, but the stuffy country club owners don't.
  • To Know Him, I Must Become Him : Played for Laughs . Carl Spackler tries to get into the mind of a gopher in order to kill it.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl : The super slut rich man's niece, Lacey, and the Tsundere with the thick Irish accent, Maggie.
  • Too Many Halves : In the second movie Jack says his mother was "half Jewish, half English, half Spanish," going on to explain that "she was a big woman."
  • Tunnel Network : The gopher has something like this. Justified as it is an animal that burrows for a living.
  • Two-Person Pool Party : Ty and Lacey.
  • Uncle Pennybags : Al Czervik. He throws money around free as a bird, and is quite happy to donate some of his winnings to Danny so he can go to college.
  • Unusual Euphemism : Judge Smails describes his niece Lacey Underall's sexual varietism to Danny: "My niece is the kind of girl who has a certain... zest of living."
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom : Smails losing the match ultimately stems from his first line in the movie — an order to his groundskeeping staff to do something about the gopher.
  • Upper-Class Twit : Spaulding Smails, the Judge's grandson. His very first scene shows that he thinks a high cardiovascular sport like tennis is less of a risk to his asthma than golf.
  • Vanity License Plate : The license plate on Al Czervik's car is CZERVIK.
  • Vapor Wear : Lacey Underall never wears a bra and some of her outfits leave very little to the imagination, intentionally.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds : Danny and Tony frequently trade barbs with each other and even get physical on occasion, but when Danny plays in the match at the end, Tony supports him and celebrates after Danny sinks the winning putt.
  • Wealthy Yacht Owner : Judge Smails is christening his new yacht, when Al shows up in his much larger boat. He then shoves his driver out of the way, put its engines into high gear, and tries to park near Smails' party, causing much damage (and hilarity ) in the process. Al: Hey, Smails! My dinghy's bigger than your whole boat!
  • Danny's numerous siblings are seen in the first three minutes of the movie but disappear for the rest of the movie.
  • The head greenskeeper, Carl's boss (and the one who assigns him to get rid of the gopher) only has two scenes then just vanishes.
  • Wild Teen Party : The Caddy Tournament after-party at the club's pool is spectacularly unruly.
  • When I Was Your Age... : After Tony makes a crack about the weight of Czervik's golf bag, Czervik tells him that when he was Tony's age he used to carry fifty pound bags of ice up several flights of stairs. Unimpressed, Tony asks what that has to do with Czervik's bag being so heavy.
  • White Anglo-Saxon Protestant : Pretty much everyone on the "snobs" side. And in their natural element (the golf course) to boot!
  • Wormsign : Well, Gophersign anyway — and it gets pretty ridiculous when the gopher starts pushing around pin flags, and then makes them disappear into the ground .
  • Wrong Restaurant : When Chandler Young meets with Tom Everett in Caddyshack II , the latter is driving a food truck and the meeting is conducted under the guise of a food order. Young orders two high class sandwiches and Everett replies "Don't have it" both times. He then makes something of his own choosing.
  • Wrong Side of the Tracks : In a visual example, Danny's bicycle ride to the country club carries him from working-class to upper-crust neighborhoods. The transition is marked by an overhead shot of him passing through a railroad crossing.
  • "You!" Exclamation : Judge Smails to Danny when he catches him with his niece.

21 Funny "Caddyshack" Quotes to Slip Into Everyday Conversations

"See you on deck, Senator!"

Although the classic screwball comedy "Caddyshack" came out in 1980, decades later it remains one of the most beloved sports movies in Hollywood history. The premise of the film is simple: the peace and quiet of elite golf club Bushwood Country Club is disturbed when a loud, obnoxious new member (played to perfection by the late Rodney Dangerfield) joins the club. Meanwhile, a young caddy named Danny Noonan (Michael O'Keefe) attempts to raise money for college by winning the club's annual Caddy Day golf tournament, getting advice from wealthy n'er-do-well Ty Webb (Chevy Chase) along the way.

While the movie was written by Harold Ramis, much of the dialogue was ad-libbed by the actors on the fly. Allowing hilarious actors like Dangerfield, Chase, Knight, and Bill Murray  the freedom to make up dialogue as they went along resulted in one very funny movie.

Here's a cheat sheet of the top "Caddyshack" quotes for you to slip into everyday conversations.

"So I Got That Going for Me, Which Is Nice."

Via YouTube

In this scene, groundskeeper Carl Spackler (Bill Murray) discusses his first encounter with the Dalai Lama.

100% of this speech was improvised by Murray, and it's one of the most subtle "Caddyshack" quotes you can use to let others know you're a fan.

"Be the Ball"

Ty Webb (Chase) gives caddy Danny Noonan (O'Keefe) some existential advice.

Another notable quote from this scene: "Don't be obsessed with your desires, Danny. The Zen philosopher, Basho, once wrote, 'A flute with no holes, is not a flute. A donut with no hole, is a Danish.'"

"How Do You Measure Yourself Against Other Golfers?"

Here the (clearly taller) Ty answers this question about scorekeeping with a succinct and hilarious slam: "By height."

"You Buy a Hat Like This I'll Bet You Get a Free Bowl of Soup, Huh?"

 Via YouTube

"Oh, it looks good on you , though," said Al Czervik (Dangerfield) to an angry, hat-wearing Judge Smails (Knight).

Who among us hasn't put our foot in our mouth by saying something mean about a person standing right there ?

"You Know I've Often Thought of Becoming a Golf Club."

After Danny waxes poetic about becoming a lawyer, hinting to Judge Smails that he needs help accomplishing that goal, a fellow caddy imitates him with this quick, funny line.

"You'll Get Nothing and Like it!"

The judge's nephew, Spaulding Smails (John F. Barmon Jr.), is a spoiled private school jerk. As he approaches the snack bar, he's running a list of things he wants to buy for lunch: "I want a hamburger. No, a cheeseburger. I want a hotdog. I want a milkshake...."

Judge Smail's curt reply is an instant classic!

"Somebody Step on a Duck?"

Ah, the famous dinner scene! In this short scene, Rodney flings zingers around the room like the true comedian he was. Fun fact: Rodney was the only cast member who refused to improvise. He needed to have all of his jokes scripted in advance in order to feel comfortable performing.

"You Wanna Make 14 Dollars the Hard Way?"

Dangerfield can't resist hitting on Judge Smails' shocked wife, and we can't stop laughing!

"Now I Know Why Tigers Eat Their Young."

One last one from the dinner scene. This is a quick joke tossed out by Dangerfield when he sees Spaulding stuffing his face at dinner.

"Ahoy, Polloi"

Hoi polloi is a term for the masses, or common people. When Danny shows up at the rich folks' garden party dressed in his finest country club couture, Spaulding can't resist getting in this dig.

"Hey, You Scratched my Anchor!"

After the madcap yachting scene, Al Czerzik drops an anchor straight through Judge Smails' new yacht.

"It's a Cinderella Story"

"Cinderella story. Outta nowhere. A former greenskeeper, now, about to become the Masters champion. It looks like a mirac...It's in the hole! It's in the hole! It's in the hole!"

Groundskeeper Carl seems to be doing more harm than good as he cuts the heads off flowers and daydreams about becoming a famous golfer.

"How 'Bout a Fresca?"

Judge Smails is trying to butter Danny up in this scene. This is a great line to use whenever you're in the position to offer someone a beverage. Guaranteed laughs from those "in the know!"

“Don’t Sell Yourself Short, Judge."

"You’re a tremendous slouch."

Ty always manages to put Judge Smails down in the most subtle but devastating ways.

"My Enemy Is an Animal"

"...and in order to conquer him, I need to think like an animal, and if possible, to look like one."

Another improvised Bill Murray moment, this one complete with hysterical facial expressions.

“The World Needs Ditch Diggers, Too.”

Ouch! This is one of the most underhanded remarks every uttered on film!

As Danny appeals to Judge Smails for a caddy scholarship to college, Smails tells him not everyone (read: not poor people)  are  meant to go to college.

"We Have a Pool or a Pond."

"Pond would be good for you."

When Carl meets Ty and tries to fanagle an invite over to his house to swim, Ty suggests a dirty pond might suit the grubby groundskeeper better than his pool.

This entire scene was improvised by Murray and Chase. One other memorable line: "Buddies for life, I'd say."

"Oh, Rat Farts!"

The Bishop on a bender attempts to golf in the middle of a thunderstorm. He's having the best game of his life until he misses a put, at which point he screams "Oh, rat farts!" just before being struck down by lightning.

"Me Winning Isn't. You Do."

Ty's so flustered during this scene with Danny that he loses all grasp of grammar,

"Well? We're Waiting!"

Right before Danny makes the winning put, the judge utters this exasperated line. An instant classic, and perfect for everyday use!

"Hey Everybody..."

"...We're all gonna get laid!"

Last but certainly not least, this is the last line of the movie, yelled exuberantly by Rodney Dangerfield.

Caddyshack Minute 61: Angenelo as Christ (and Every Stanley Kubrick Movie)

Caddyshack Minute 53: Please Kill Us, We’re Still at Ty’s House

Ty Webb pokes Lacey Underall in the back with his finger and slips off her, and we hear the origin story of Mike’s and Dan’s romcom-ready friendship.

Caddyshack Minute 52: Are We Seriously Still at Ty’s House?

Ty Webb and Lacey Underall fail to drink tequila, skinny dip with clothes on, and get greasy in bed, but all is not lost because Mike has a story about Dan being a jerk.

Judge Elihu Smails

Judge Elihu Smails

Character analysis.

(Avoiding Spoilers)

Living… fighting the good fight in preserving the WASP tradition. (That's the way he'd see it, anyway.) Judge Smails is the co-founder and president of Bushwood Country Club and a loyal member at the Rolling Lakes Yacht Club. His vehicle: a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow.

Profession… judge. ”I've sentenced boys younger than you to the gas chamber,” he tells his young caddy, Danny Noonan. “Didn't want to do it. I felt I owed it to them.” At this stage in his life, Judge Smails’ full-time job might as well be golf. There are few things he enjoys more than playing 18 holes, except maybe playing 36. Rain or shine, you can find him out there on the links, quite possibly with his chum Dr. Beeper. Judge Smails is not the worst golfer, though he often cheats by improving his lie or marking down the "wrong" score. He has an abnormally intricate pre-shot routine and relies heavily on his trusty putter, Billy Baroo.

Relationship Status... married, with love, to Mrs. Smails.

Interests… dancing with Mrs. Smails to swing music in the Bushwood ballroom; a nice cool Fresca at the turn.

Challenge… battling the crass, hedonistic real estate tycoon Al Czervik for all that is holy. While Czervik strikes most as a ton of fun, his new money ways and lack of propriety stick in the Judge's craw. Al rolls into Bushwood and immediately sets to tarnishing all that is sacred to Judge Smails – his wife, his boat ( The Flying WASP ), and the game of golf. Judge Smails sees himself as a force of good against the evil Czervik; to rid Bushwood Country Club of Czervick would be nothing less than a successful exorcism. Of course, the Judge may well be deluded.

Personality… arrogant,   pompous, short-fused. Judge Smails regularly demonstrates his inability to manage his anger by throwing his clubs and berating anyone that rubs him the wrong way, which happens to be most people. Though he fancies Bushwood as a bastion of rectitude in a sea of moral depravity, his vision rarely aligns with reality. And so he is probably doomed to live out the rest of his years in a perpetually peeved state.

What The Cast Of Caddyshack Is Doing Today

Danny Noonan looks confused in close-up

In 1980, National Lampoon co-founder Douglas Kenney, former "SCTV" head writer Harold Ramis, and "Saturday Night Live" cast member Brian Doyle-Murray got together and wrote "Caddyshack," one of the funniest films of the 20th century. Taking place at the fictional Bushwood Country Club in Illinois, "Caddyshack" traces the intersecting lives of five men who are all as dysfunctional as they are hilarious.

In the decades since its release, ESPN has ranked "Caddyshack" as the funniest sports movie ever made, while the American Film Institute included it in their "100 Years ... 100 Laughs" list. The characters of Ty Webb, Judge Smails, and Carl Spackler remain titans of the comedy landscape, and "Caddyshack" would launch some careers while marking a triumphant finale for others. The film made Chevy Chase a star and vaulted Rodney Dangerfield into a new level of acting fame.

Kenney died just a month after the premiere of "Caddyshack," but his legacy was cemented forever in the 1980 classic that continues to find new audiences on streaming services. Ramis would continue to write, direct, and star in blockbuster comedies until his death in 2014, while Doyle-Murray has carried a consistent career well into the 2010s. Some of the cast members are no longer with us, but a good majority are still acting and taking on new roles. Here's a look into what the stars of "Caddyshack" are up to today.

Michael O'Keefe

Michael O'Keefe was already a semi-household name by the time he arrived on-screen in "Caddyshack" as caddy Danny Noonan. The golf comedy classic was only his third-ever film, but one year prior, he played Ben Meechum in Lewis John Carlino's war drama "The Great Santini" and earned himself an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Where actors like Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, and Cindy Morgan actually play supporting roles in the plot of "Caddyshack," O'Keefe and Ted Knight are, in a lot of ways, the main protagonists. Danny is a teenage caddy at Bushwood who comes from a poor upbringing, hoping to raise enough money to go to college once he graduates high school. There are moments in "Caddyshack" when O'Keefe does act like an Oscar nominee amongst a battalion of "SNL" alumni and National Lampoon iconoclasts. His line deliveries are often mature and display his wide breadth of charisma.

Since "Caddyshack," O'Keefe's movie career hasn't been as prosperous as his early work might have foreshadowed. He had turns in films like "The Hot Chick," "Michael Clayton," and "Finders Keepers," while playing recurring character Fred on the sitcom "Roseanne." O'Keefe hasn't acted much since 2019, with his last role being Paul Backus in NBC's drama series "The Enemy Within."

Chevy Chase

Though Chevy Chase received top billing upon the release of "Caddyshack," it's safe to say he's since been surpassed in fame by one of his co-stars. That being said, when Chase signed on to star in "Caddyshack," he was one of America's hottest rising film stars, after co-starring with Goldie Hawn in "Foul Play" two years before.

In 1975, New York Magazine called him "the funniest man in America," and he became the original face of "Saturday Night Live" as the show's first-ever Weekend Update correspondent. He garnered two Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe  during his "SNL" tenure, further cementing him as a Hollywood heavyweight waiting in the wings. Though his turn in "Foul Play" was a great display of his acting chops, "Caddyshack" is where Chase truly debuted his big-screen comedic power.

As Ty Webb, a millionaire lumber mill owner who also happens to be the son of a Bushwood founder, Chase spends most of his scenes with caddy Danny Noonan, and he and Michael O'Keefe have a tremendous chemistry that steals the show. Since "Caddyshack," Chase's career peaked with his portrayal of Clark, the Griswold patriarch in the "Vacation" franchise, but he found a late-career renaissance with "Community" beginning in 2009, and has had small roles in films like "Hot Tub Time Machine," "Lovesick," and "The Last Movie Star." In 2023, he'll be seen in an adaptation of R.L. Stine's "Zombie Town."

Bill Murray

Though he played second-fiddle to Chevy Chase in "Caddyshack" — coincidentally after being his replacement on "SNL" three years earlier –  Bill Murray has enjoyed the most-successful career out of the entire cast. Logging classics like "Meatballs," "Stripes," "Tootsie," "Ghostbusters," and "Groundhog Day" in a 14-year span, Murray quickly ascended into the comedy king of Hollywood.

As Carl Spackler, the bumbling and mumbling greenskeeper at Bushwood, Murray spends the majority of "Caddyshack" threatening caddies with a pitchfork, carrying the golf clubs of a pastor who gets struck by lightning, and eliminating a pesky gopher. It's not one of his greatest comedic performances, but it remains one of the most iconic entries in his long filmography.

After "Caddyshack," Murray would enjoy roles in "What About Bob?," "Kingpin," and "Osmosis Jones" before earning an Oscar nomination for Best Actor for his performance in Sofia Coppola's isolation masterpiece "Lost in Translation." After roles in most of Wes Anderson's catalog, as well as parts in "St. Vincent," "Zombieland," and "On the Rocks," Murray's career has tapered off in recent years. He was set to play a large role in Aziz Ansari's directorial debut "Being Mortal," but production was suspended after an official complaint was registered against him for inappropriate behavior on set (per Entertainment Weekly ).

Sarah Holcomb

Sarah Holcomb was only active as a screen actor for two years, racking up a total of five credits. She made her feature film debut in 1978 in "National Lampoon's Animal House" as Clorette DePasto, the teenage daughter of the university town's mayor. Between that and "Caddyshack," she played in "Walk Proud," "Mr. Mike's Mondo Video," and "Happy Birthday, Gemini."

"Caddyshack" remains Holcomb's most popular role, as she plays Maggie O'Hooligan, Danny Noonan's girlfriend who works as a server at Bushwood. Before the film, she was slated to appear in "Jaws 2," but her role was cut when production axed numerous teens from the script after rewrites (via Media Mikes ).

Holcomb's acting career would end after "Caddyshack" because of a diagnosis of acute schizophrenia stemming from a cocaine addiction (per The Washington Independent ). "Animal House" co-writer Chris Miller attributed her addiction to being a result of the lifestyle she got caught up in on sets, as "Caddyshack," in particular, was a mecca of drug use and partying (via Decider ).

If you or anyone you know needs help with addiction issues, help is available. Visit the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration website or contact SAMHSA's National Helpline at 1-800-662-HELP (4357).

Scott Colomby

Scott Colomby plays Tony D'Annunzio, the only human antagonist in "Caddyshack," whose rivalry with Danny Noonan fuels the caddy subplot in the film. D'Annunzio is a slick, tank top and leather glove-wearing showboat whose perception of his own charisma bloats his ego. By the movie's end, he makes amends with Danny and supports his caddy counterpart in defeating Judge Smails (Ted Knight) and Dr. Beeper (Dan Resin) in the golf face-off.

Since "Caddyshack," Colomby hasn't built an extensive filmography, only logging 13 total films in a few decades. Immediately after his turn as D'Annunzio, Colomby found some footing in "Porky's," "Porky's II: The Next Day," and "Porky's Revenge!" between 1982 and 1985 as the character Brian Schwartz. Colomby would compile a nice string of supporting roles in the 1990s, but his career slowed once the 2010s arrived. His last credited role was in the 2019 short film "All of It Happened On a Thursday," in which he played a character named Alligator Swanson.

Cindy Morgan

Before playing Judge Smail's niece Lacey Underall in "Caddyshack," Cindy Morgan found acclaim with a supporting part in Paul Schrader's "American Gigolo," which starred Richard Gere in his first prominent role. As Lacey, however, Morgan took the spotlight as the love interest of both Danny Noonan and Ty Webb. She became the most chaotic character in a film brimming with chaos both on-screen and off — a true testament to Morgan's charisma and energy. Her career peaked with the golf comedy, and she appeared in few theatrical movies going forward.

Immediately after "Caddyshack," Morgan starred alongside Jeff Bridges in Steven Lisberger's 1982 sci-fi cult classic "TRON," which was one of the first films to ever use CGI. Beyond that, however, Morgan found herself taking supporting roles in made-for-television movies and guest appearances on primetime television shows like "The Love Boat," "CHiPs," and "Falcon Crest." Her last live-action acting credit came in 2011, when she was in the short film "Empty Sky."

Brian Doyle-Murray

Known primarily as the older brother of comedic titan Bill Murray, Brian Doyle-Murray is a Hollywood heavyweight in his own right, having written and acted in some of the most famous comedies of the last 50 years. Before he co-wrote "Caddyshack" with Harold Ramis and Doug Kenney, Doyle-Murray earned three consecutive Emmy nominations for his writing work between 1978 and 1980 on "Saturday Night Live," where he was also a featured player in the cast.

In "Caddyshack," Doyle-Murray made his feature acting debut as Lou Loomis, the boss of Bushwood's caddy shack. Though he spent more time working behind the camera, every scene he's in is an abundance of perfectly delivered monotone ribs at Danny Noonan and the rest of the caddies he's in charge of.

After "Caddyshack," Doyle-Murray would co-star with Chevy Chase again in "Modern Problems" and "National Lampoon's Vacation," before having solid supporting roles in "Sixteen Candles," "Ghostbusters II," "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation," and "JFK." Doyle-Murray hasn't acted in a major theatrical production since 2012, when he played Monsignor Ratliffe in "The Three Stooges," but the actor has enjoyed a recurring voice role as the Flying Dutchman on "SpongeBob SquarePants" since 1999.

The foil to Michael O'Keefe's Danny Noonan, actor Ted Knight played the dysfunctional, angry Judge Smails in "Caddyshack" and stole the show. Before he rose to comedic fame a decade earlier for his role as Ted Baxter on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," Knight had credited and uncredited performances in films like "Psycho," "The Candidate," and "M*A*S*H." Despite having a great 30-year career in television, making appearances on some of the greatest shows ever, like "The Twilight Zone," "Gunsmoke," and "Bonanza," Knight's true claim to fame remains "Caddyshack."

Aside from O'Keefe, Knight is likely the only actor whose most memorable role came in "Caddyshack." It's his only credited leading feature role, though he did not receive top billing for his performance. The character of Judge Smails is a loose cannon fixated on simply enjoying his golfing experience at Bushwood. Of course, he's antagonized by Al Czervik (Rodney Dangerfield) and his posse of socialites attracted to his new money. Sadly, "Caddyshack" would be Knight's last feature film role, as he died of colon cancer in 1986 at the age of 62.

Rodney Dangerfield

Before "Caddyshack," Rodney Dangerfield had never done much film acting. He had an uncredited role as "Onlooker" in Stanley Kubrick's 1956 noir film "The Killing," which he'd follow-up 14 years later with his first credited performance in Harry Hurwitz's "The Projectionist." Dangerfield had built a career out of one-liner comedy, which helped him become a late-night talk show regular during the counterculture era. Most know him for his catchphrase, "I don't get no respect," but his headlining shows in Las Vegas helped vault him into the mainstream as a stand-up performer and comedic persona.

As rich real estate developer Al Czervik, Dangerfield provides much of the outrageous energy that defines "Caddyshack." As opposed to the ambling chaos brought by Bill Murray's bumbling Carl Spackler, Dangerfield's comedy in the film is calculated and poised, much akin to his own on-stage delivery. He was easily the most acclaimed comedic presence in the cast, despite his lack of acting credits, and his performance shines as he never misses a beat.

After "Caddyshack," Dangerfield would enjoy more acting roles, starring in "Easy Money," "Back to School," and "Natural Born Killers." He'd make appearances on television shows, as well, including "The Simpsons," "Home Improvement," and "Suddenly Susan," while maintaining his legacy as a frequent guest on "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno." Dangerfield died in 2004 at the age of 82 after complications during heart surgery.

Hamilton Mitchell

Playing Danny Noonan's friend and fellow caddy Motormouth, longtime character actor Hamilton Mitchell got his career off to a great start. After "Caddyshack," his first ever role, he did a lot of single-episode work on various television series in the 1990s, including "The Jamie Foxx Show," "ER," and "The West Wing." He was a part of the supporting cast in feature films "Beyond the Universe," "Going Ape!," and "Slumber Party Massacre II," but his most famous role came in 2005, when he was a recurring character in the central cast of "Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide."

Mitchell's portrayal of Vice Principal Crubbs helped make "Ned's Declassified" one of Nickelodeon's best teen shows of the era, and it launched the actor into a great next chapter in his career. He would find success again in episodes of primetime television series like "My Name Is Earl," "Parks and Recreation," "Modern Family," and "Superstore," while also doing guest spots on teen shows like "Big Time Rush" and "The Suite Life on Deck." At the end of his career, Mitchell was a series regular on The CW's "Worst Birthday Ever." He died in January 2021.

Ann Ryerson

Before she was Pvt. Carol Winter or Nan Funkhouser, Ann Ryerson played Grace, a girl who caddied with Danny Noonan and Tony D'Annunzio at Bushwood. Ryerson's character is only in a few scenes, namely the montages at the caddy shack and when Danny is about to sink the winning putt at the movie's end. Prior to "Caddyshack," Ryerson had done four small films, along with one episode of "Lou Grant."

Ryerson has enjoyed a long career in television, doing guest spots on "Grey's Anatomy," "Mad Men," "The West Wing," and "Kroll Show" while holding main or recurring roles on "Private Benjamin" and "Curb Your Enthusiasm." She's also been in popular movies, namely "Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives," " Minority Report," ," and "The Go-Getter." Her most recent acting credit came in a 2022 episode of Freeform's "Good Trouble."

About Caddyshack

Considered one of the greatest sports movies of all time, Caddyshack is one of those gems that still retains its shine, over 40 years after its release. Although the budget of the film was less than 5 million, Caddyshack manages to incorporate some of the greatest comedic geniuses in the 80s including Bill Murray and Chevy Chase. Spoiler Alert: This guide will discuss some of the major events and plot points that occur throughout the film!

Caddyshack revolves around a caddie Danny Noonan, played by Michael O’Keefe, who attempts to gain enough money to go to college. He does this by currying favor with the arrogant co-founder of Bushwood Country Club, Judge Elihu Smails, to get a chance at a caddie scholarship program that could potentially save him from working at a lumber yard. In the meanwhile, a mentally unstable groundskeeper, played by Bill Murray, is sent on a mission to get rid of a gopher that is destroying the golf course.

Along the way, chaos is caused by Al Czervik, considered a nouveau riche golfer by the other members due to how he made his money by becoming a real estate developer. He disrupts Judge Smails’ games consistently and is considered a thorn in his side. They later decide to settle this feud over a match in which Danny Noonan later participates on Al Czervik’s side, revoking his potential to receive this caddie scholarship but having the chance to receive compensation for winning this game with a wager of $80,000 per team.

As Danny Noonan hits the last shot, it falls short of the hole and all seems lost, but then Carl Spackler detonates rigged explosives throughout the course to try to get rid of the gopher and this shakes the ball into the hole, winning the game for Danny Noonan.

Caddyshack Locations

With a relatively small budget of 4.8 million dollars to create a movie centered around golf, Caddyshack had to get creative with the locations they utilized to give the illusion that the famous Bushwood Country Club was one massive resort and club. Many of the locations used were close to each other and were used in a variety of ways to create illusions that either made the shots look connected or a totally different location.

Since the movie Caddyshack was set to be in the US Midwest, the producers had to look for filming locations and golf courses that didn’t have any palm trees. This led to them choosing the famous Rolling Hills Golf Club, now known as the Grande Oaks Golf Club, as the main site for where their shooting was to take place. To add to the luxury and grandeur of the film, producers decided to use other resorts and restaurants like the Boca Raton Hotel and Club as well as the Rusty Pelican Restaurant to add a more refined look to the locations used in the film.

The final scene for the 18th hole was not shot on an actual golf course but was built from scratch. The pyrotechnicians used so many explosives that pilots that flew over the area reported the explosion as if a plane crash occurred.

The chaotic family scene in Caddyshack

Los Angeles, USA

The introduction of the movie presents to the audience the dysfunctional family of Danny Noonan. Danny initially sits down to eat breakfast as his morning starts out, but his father begins to pester him about his future. As his father continues to pester Danny about his plans for college, Danny decides to abandon his breakfast plans and just head out to work. On the way out of his house, the audience hears his father talk with his mother as he says, “He isn’t gonna be a caddy all his life, is he?”

Located in Los Angeles, this filming location of Caddyshack can still be reached to this day and it's easily accessible too. With it being so close to a bus station, there are plenty of ways to reach this filming location, including public transport. For those that prefer a physical address, it is located at 232 N Avenue 54 Los Angeles. To get there with the help of a bus, you could travel with the Highland Park/Eagle Rock bus along North Avenue 54 and stop by the intersection where North Avenue 54 meets Monte Vista Street. Walking a little distance down will allow you to see the house where this scene was shot. Although it’s painted a little differently compared to the movie, you can be sure that this is the right house!

Ty Webb talks to Danny Noonan scene in Caddyshack

Grande Oaks Golf Club, Davie, USA

With Danny confused and looking for a third opinion on what he should do with his life, he goes to work as a caddy at Bushwood Country Club. He caddies for Ty Webb, a golfer who seems well off. Mr. Webb is notorious for not remembering names and calls Danny a multitude of wrong names to which Danny corrects him. One such instance comes in the introductory stage of the movie where Mr. Webb says, “I like you, Betty.” To which Danny replies, “That’s Danny, Sir.” Afterward, he gives Danny some “words of wisdom” to help him find direction in his life.

Most of the shooting for the golf course scenes took place at Grande Oaks Golf Club, which was formerly known as Rolling Hills Golf Club. To get to Grande Oaks Golf Club, drive along Southwest 82nd Way or the West Rolling Hills Circle to get to the famous golf course used for the shooting of Caddyshack’s action scenes. Some of the landmarks close to the golf course include the HCA Florida University Hospital as well as a variety of restaurants.

Dinner scene in Caddyshack

Boca Raton Resort & Club, Boca Raton

Supposed to be one of the more calm and collected events, the dinner scene in Caddyshack was supposed to be a nice way to end the night for Mr. Smails. While he shows off his eccentric suit that supposedly originated from Scotland, Mr. Czervik makes a scene and goes up to Mr. Smails and upon meeting his grandson mentions one of the many one-liners spewed throughout the film, “Now I know why tigers eat their young, you know.”

Although most of the shooting for the film took place within Davies, several shots, including the dinner scene that showed the interior of several luxury clubs were shot at the Boca Raton Resort & Club at Boca Raton. It’s located at 501 East Camino Real and to get there, drive along the East Camino Real and take a turn down Boca Resort Drive. Featuring a full resort, you’re sure to get your fill of luxury staying at one of Caddyshack’s many film sets.

Pool scene in Caddyshack

Plantation Preserve Golf Course & Club, Plantation

With the exclusive Bushwood Country Club hosting a Caddy day at their pool, the caddies do all they can to enjoy the time they have at this resort’s pool. The caddies enjoy this time to the fullest, even pushing the lifeguard tower into the pool for fun. With the audience simply observing from the sideline, they can see that even more chaos is about to take place as the older regulars come to visit the pool. When the older women come from the bushes, they are startled at all this madness, and one lady decides to shoo the caddies away from the pool by saying, “I want you out of that pool at once!”

One of the best scenes in Caddyshack, the pool scene full of confusion and laughter was filmed in Plantation Preserve Golf Course & Club in Plantation, Florida. Although the pool has since been demolished, which is ironic considering the name of the golf course, you can still reach Plantation Preserve Golf Course & Club today. You can drive along West Broward Boulevard and take a turn down Southwest 70th Avenue to reach Plantation Preserve Golf Course & Club.

Danny drops his family off at church scene in Caddyshack

Davie, Florida

There were many deleted scenes in Caddyshack that were aired on television throughout the 1980s and one of these scenes included Danny dropping off his family at church. Here we see that as he drops off his family at church, his mother stays a bit longer behind and asks him why he doesn’t attend. She does, however, know about his plans and says, “You’re going to the yacht club party, yeah I know all about it, great for you.”

This scene was shot within Davie, much like the introduction of the film, and was supposed to be in between Lacey’s visit to Ty and the yacht club scene. To get to the filming location of one of Caddyshack’s deleted scenes, you can drive along Davie Road, or you could take the number 9 or 12 bus that also travels along Davie Road. You make a turn down Southwest 47th Court and you’re bound to see the famous Davie United Methodist Church that was used to film one of the scenes in Caddyshack.

Yacht Club scene in Caddyshack

Rusty Pelican Restaurant, Key Biscayne

With Danny winning the Caddy Day golf tournament, Judge Elihu Smails invites him to attend the christening ceremony for his boat at the Rolling Lakes Yacht Club which is located close to the golf course. Before the ship can sail, however, when Mrs. Smails says, “I christen thee, the Flying Wasp.” and attempts to break the bottle on the pulpit of the ship, it breaks off. When Mr. Czervik sees Mr. Smail’s sloop he tries to reach there but causes many problems for the smaller boats, and when he finally drops his anchor, it smashes through Mr. Smails’ ship causing it to sink.

This scene was all filmed along the Rusty Pelican Restaurant in Key Biscayne. This is one of the many funny scenes in Caddyshack and features a lot of the famous Floridian coastline. Getting to this location is simple and you can reach it by driving along the Rickenbacker Causeway. Not only is the restaurant present at this location, but there are also many other attractions at the Rickenbacker Marina that you can explore. As a bonus, you can also reach this location through public transport by taking the B bus that leaves Brickell Station.

Although Caddyshack is over 4 decades old, there are still relevant points to take from this timeless classic, including the fact that it takes a hit at the modern class war that still occurs today. It gives a glimpse into the lives of two classes of people on opposite sides of life and although it’s considered a comedy, many of the tropes it introduces including celebrating the underdog really make it an enjoyable film to watch and rewatch.

Quotes

Judge Smails : You know, you should play with Dr. Beeper and myself. I mean, he's been club champion for three years running and I'm no slouch myself.

Ty Webb : Don't sell yourself short Judge, you're a tremendous slouch.

Judge Smails : I've sentenced boys younger than you to the gas chamber. Didn't want to do it. I felt I owed it to them.

Spalding Smails : I want a hamburger... no, cheeseburger. I want a hot dog. I want a milkshake. I want potato chips. I want...

[gets cut off by Judge Smails, who grabs him by the arms and yanks him to their table]

Judge Smails : You'll get nothing, and like it!

Judge Smails : Spaulding, get dressed you're playing golf.

Spalding Smails : No I'm not grandpa I'm playing tennis.

Judge Smails : You're playing golf and you're going to like it.

Spalding Smails : What about my asthma?

Judge Smails : I'll give you asthma.

[Ty has just been asked by Al to partner up against Judge Smails in a $20,000-per-person golf match]

Judge Smails : Can I have a word with you? ln private?

Ty Webb : Sure thing, Judge.

Judge Smails : Listen, your father and I prepped together, went to war together, played golf together. We built this club, he and I. And let's face it, some people simply do not *belong*. Let's not... cave in too easy. What do you say, Ty?

[Smails and Ty start to laugh]

Ty Webb : Let's make it $40,000.

Al Czervik : Hey, great!

Ty Webb : [to a glaring Smails]  You know, Judge, my dad... never liked you.

Judge Smails : Well? We're waiting!

Tony D'Annunzio : Another Rob Roy, Bishop?

Bishop : You never ask a Navy man if he'll have another drink, because it's nobody's goddamned business how many drinks he's had already, right?

Judge Smails : Wrong! You're drinking too much, Your Excellency.

Bishop : Excellency, fiddlesticks! My name's Fred and I'm a man, same as you.

Judge Smails : You're not a man, you're a bishop, for God's sakes.

Bishop : There is no God...

Danny Noonan : I planned to go to law school after I graduated, but it looks like my folks won't have enough money to put me through college.

Judge Smails : Well, the world needs ditch diggers, too.

Lacey Underall : [to Danny]  Nice try.

[Judge Smails is preparing to hit the ball on the first tee while Al Czervick watches]

Al Czervik : Hey 'Whitey,' where's your hat?

[Smails looks over at Czervick, who is watching anxiously]

Al Czervik : ...let's go while we're young!

Judge Smails : Mind Sir? Trying to tee off.

Al Czervik : ...I bet ya slice into the woods! A hundred bucks!

Judge Smails : Gambling is illegal at Bushwood sir, and I never slice.

[the judge hits the ball, and it goes flying into some trees, in response, he shouts in frustration]

Al Czervik : Okay, you can owe me!

Judge Smails : [mad]  I owe you nothing!

Judge Smails : You - you will never be a member of Bushwood!

Al Czervik : A member? You think I actually want to join this scumatorium? The only reason I'm here is because I might buy it!

Judge Smails : [to Bishop Fred Pickering]  Say, Fred, did you hear the one about the Jew, the Catholic, and the colored boy who went to heaven?

Bishop : Yeah, Judge, that's a doozy.

Judge Smails : Danny, I'm having a party this weekend.

[pauses a beat]

Judge Smails : How would you like to come over and mow my lawn?

[Danny walks inside Judge Smails' office, where Smails is seated around, and has a seat, awaiting his disciplinary action for his involvement with Lacey]

Danny Noonan : Judge Smails, sir?

Judge Smails : [not realizing Danny's already seated]  Sit down, Danny.

[turns around in his chair, slightly hitting his desk; Both Danny and Smails tries to see their faces]

Judge Smails : Danny, I think you know why you are here, so I'll... do us both the courtesy of not reviewing what happened yesterday...

[angrily shoves the lamp to the side, but calms down]

Judge Smails : Sorry. My niece is the kind of girl who has a certain... zest of living. The last thing any of us need right now is a lot of loose talk about her behavior.

Danny Noonan : I swear, I didn't tell anybody anything, sir.

Judge Smails : [relief sigh]  Good. Good, good.

[stands up]

Judge Smails : You know, despite what happened, I-I'm still convinced you have many fine qualities and I... I think you can still become a gentleman some day if you understand and abide by the rules of decent society.

[pats Danny on his shoulder]

Judge Smails : Danny, Danny, there's a lot of, uh, well, badness in the world today. I see it in court today. I've sentenced boys younger than you to the gas chamber. Didn't wanna do it, but felt I owed it to them. The most important decision you can make right now is what do you stand for, Danny? Goodness... or badness?

Danny Noonan : I know I make some bad mistakes in the past. I'm willing to make up for that. I wanna be good.

Judge Smails : Good. Good, very good. You know, I... I know how hard it is for young people today and I wanna help. Well, just ask my grandson, Spaulding. He and I are regular pals. Are you my pal, Mr. scholarship winner?

Danny Noonan : [shakes Smails' hand]  Yes, sir. I'm your pal.

Judge Smails : [chuckles]  How 'bout a Fresca?

Judge Smails : How about a Fresca?

Judge Smails : Don't you people have homes?

Judge Smails : It's easy to grin / When your ship comes in / And you've got the stock market beat. / But the man worthwhile, / Is the man who can smile, / When his shorts are too tight in the seat.

[chuckles several times]

Judge Smails : Okay, Pookie. Do the honors.

Judge Smails : I demand satisfaction.

Al Czervik : [mocking]  You demand satisfaction? Well I'll tell you what's satisfying: *cash*. I'll shoot you 18 holes for ten thousand bucks!

Judge Smails : [laughs]  Wha... I could beat you with one arm!

Al Czervik : Well, how about teams then, for twenty thousand? You can have Dr. Frankenputz...

Dr. Beeper : [mortified]  I beg your pardon!

Al Czervik : And I'll take Ty, here.

Ty Webb : Wait a minute guys... I don't play golf... for money... against people.

Judge Smails : Ty, what did you shoot today?

Ty Webb : Oh, Judge, I don't keep score.

Judge Smails : Then how do you measure yourself with other golfers?

Ty Webb : By height.

Judge Smails : McFiddish, do you know what I just saw? A gopher. Do you know what gophers can do to a golf course?

Groundskeeper Sandy : Aye, Sir. I think they're tunneling in from that construction site over yonder.

Judge Smails : Czervik Construction Company? Well, I slap an injunction on them so fast it'll make their head spin.

Spalding Smails : Turds.

Judge Smails : Spaulding, how many times have I spoken to you about your language?

Spalding Smails : Sorry grandpa I forgot.

Judge Smails : Oh Dr. Beeper, Bishop Pickering this is my niece Lacey Underall. Lacey's mother sent her to us for the summer.

Dr. Beeper : Must be a nice change from dreary old Manhattan.

Lacey Underall : Yes I was really getting tired of having fun all the time.

Judge Smails : Ah. Ho ho. Ha ha ha.

Spalding Smails : Double turds.

Judge Smails : *Spaulding*!

Judge Elihu Smails : You're no gentleman!

Al Czervik : I'm no doorknob either, alright?

Al Czervik : How are you, boys? Hey, we're both starving. When do we eat?

Judge Elihu Smails : You! You! You have worn out your welcome at Bushwood, sir!

Al Czervik : Is that so? Well, who made you Pope of this dump? Huh?

Judge Elihu Smails : Bushwood - a "dump"? Well, I'll guarantee you'll never be a member here!

Al Czervik : A member? Are you kidding? You think I'd join this crummy "snobatorium"? Why, this whole place sucks!

Judge Elihu Smails : Su..su..su..su..su...

Al Czervik : That's right. It sucks! The only reason I'm here is maybe I'll buy it.

Judge Smails : Ohhh, Porterhouse!

Smoke Porterhouse : Yes SIR! Yes sir, Judge. Yes sir.

Judge Smails : Look at the wax build up on those shoes. This is fine leather. I want that wax stripped off there, then I want them creamed and buffed with a fine chamois. And I want them now. Chop chop.

Smoke Porterhouse : You got it. Got 'em, Judge.

Judge Smails : Do you stand for *goodness*, or - for *badness*?

Al Czervik : What're we, waiting for these guys? Hey Whitey, where's your hat?

Judge Smails : Do you mind, sir. I'm trying to tee off.

Al Czervik : I'll bet you a hundred bucks you slice it into the woods.

[Swings club, slices ball into woods]

Judge Smails : *Damn*.

Al Czervik : OK, you can owe me.

Judge Smails : I owe you nothing.

Judge Smails : Yes. Yes. Winter rules.

Judge Smails : Don't you people have jobs?

Judge Smails : Spalding get your foot off the boat!

Ty Webb : Actually, Judge, I think it's up to us to pick our substitute.

Judge Elihu Smails : Well, who do you want?

Ty Webb : Sonja Henie's out. We'll take Danny Noonan.

The soaring eagle emblem on Harbour Ridge's logo is a pleasant statement that this yacht club cares about protecting the natural environment around its facility on the St. Lucie River north of West Palm Beach. Its two championship golf courses are Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuaries, but conservation does not distract from luxurious amenities. Members can choose between upscale or casual dining in the 45,000 square-foot clubhouse while soaking up stunning lakeside views. Also set in this idyllic rural setting: tennis courts, a swimming pool, a fitness center and spa, a library, a puppy park and banquet halls for special events.

PALM BEACH YACHT CLUB

West palm beach, fl.

Founded in 1890, this boaters' sanctuary is considered a jewel of the Atlantic seaboard that attracts racers and society's A-list from around the world. With five-star cuisine and gracious décor, the dining room is an epicurean delight. The club is renowned for events such as trips to the Kentucky Derby, Napa Valley and Havana, as well as art tours, river cruises, Miami Dolphin football games and tennis tournaments.

ROYAL PALM YACHT & COUNTRY CLUB

Boca raton, fl.

Alcoa industrialist Arthur Vining Davis founded the Royal Palm in 1959 on 450 acres of land that was once Boca Raton's polo grounds. The property's centerpiece is a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course, which hosts several tournaments on its scenic greens. The marina's floating dock yachting facility can accommodate vessels up to 130 feet. Three restaurants offer options ranging from relaxed snacks to elegant gourmet cuisine. Six tennis courts, a swimming pool, a spa and a fitness center top off the amenity list.

CORAL RIDGE YACHT CLUB

Fort lauderdale, fl.

Conveniently located near three major airports, Coral Ridge has been an upscale haven for affluent and celebrity guests, including The Beatles in 1964. Founded in 1947, the gorgeous clubhouse overlooks stunning views of the Intracoastal Waterway, Sunrise Bay and historic Hugh Taylor Birch State Park. Amenities include family and social activities, a fitness center, golf, a swimming pool, tennis, sports camps and sailing programs for children. It's within easy walking distance from white-sand beaches, restaurants, nightlife, and movie theaters.

CORAL REEF YACHT CLUB

Some of the country's best yacht racing competitions take place at Coral Reef 2008 Star Worlds, Bacardi Miami Race Week, Rolex Miami Olympic Classes Regatta and more. And some of its members bring home Olympic gold medals in boating events. When you visit this bustling club, it's the 100-slip marina that catches your eye and the 6,000 square foot clubhouse that makes you want to linger in the lounge and hear about the history and camaraderie in the waters of Biscayne Bay. Social activities for adults and kids build a strong sense of community.

OCEAN REEF CLUB

Key largo, fl.

You can arrive by land, sea or air to this 2,500-acre private paradise tucked away in the northern tip of Florida's Keys. Known for championship golfing and world-class fishing, the facility includes 12 tennis courts, basketball, a spa and a fitness center. A dozen restaurants and lounges present a range of options from gourmet to casual dining and poolside cocktails. In addition to the nine-hole mini-golf course, Buccaneer Island's saltwater lagoon is family-fun central with water sports such as sailboats, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards. Snorkeling and scuba excursions depart daily.

USEPPA ISLAND CLUB

Bokeelia, fl.

Private security and sophisticated solitude are the buzzwords for this private club located on a 100-acre island on Pine Island Sound. Since the 1800s, industrialists, socialites and fishing fans have been pampered at this luxurious West Florida retreat. The U.S. government took over the island during the Bay of Pigs invasion, but the club reopened in 1976 and was restored to its original grandeur. Today's guests enjoy amenities such as fine dining, tennis, a swimming pool, croquet and bocce. Social events and regattas in peak season are legendary.

PELICAN ISLE YACHT CLUB

After a recent $4.8 million renovation, Pelican Isle is looking pretty swanky. The new 20,000 square-foot club-house is complete with a new kitchen, banquet rooms, fitness center, stellar waterfront views, two bocce courts and firepits. Only five minutes from the Gulf of Mexico at Wiggins Pass on the Cocohatchee River, the nearby beach is rated as top-notch with a coral reef for scuba divers. Amenities include upscale dining, a swimming pool, tennis, pickleball, water aerobics, a ship store and yachting excursions.

ST. PETERSBURG YACHT CLUB

St. petersburg, fl.

Established in 1909 and fully renovated in the 1990s, this prestigious club is dedicated to preserving traditions in sailing and yachting. The list of members' championship racing awards and Olympic medals is extensive. As one of America's oldest yacht clubs, the facility overlooking Tampa Bay presents two elegant dining rooms, cocktail lounge, poolside tiki hut and many spacious banquet rooms. Special events include the historic Habana Race (first sailed in 1930), Vintage Motor Classic and several fishing tournaments.

The Club was originally founded in 1927 as the Southern Florida Boat Racing Association. Our philosophy is to include all who wish to take part.  Our lay back attitude and family oriented atmosphere attracts experienced salty dogs, rookie ones as well as families who have a passion for the outdoor lifestyle we have to offer.

A private island off the Florida Keys for sale at $75 million: It includes multiple houses

Pumpkin Key, located off the Florida Keys near Key Largo. The entire private island along with a mainland house in the Key Largo Ocean Reef Club was listed at $75 million on Feb. 13, 2024 by Compass.

A 26-acre private island know as Pumpkin Key is on the market for $75 million.

The listing managed by Liz Hogan of Compass offers combo deal including a mainland home in Key Largo and the entire island with multiple amenities for convenient management of the estate.

"There are two ways this will sell," Hogan told USA TODAY in an interview. "Either it will go for a family looking for a family compound and a legacy property or a developer will buy it to build on the island and sell the parts."

The estate's current owner, a family from the Midwest, has used it as a family compound but its generations are growing out of it, Hogan said.

More: See retired Alabama football coach Nick Saban's $17.5 million Florida home

Listing includes mainland home with dock, 4-minute boat ride to island

The mainland home as part of the listing is on the Key Largo coast closest to Pumpkin Key, and includes a dock that stretches more than 100 feet long to be able to boat quickly between the mainland and the island.

The home is also part of the Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo, which Hogan says is a fully sufficient yearlong resort. It has its own airport for private jets, a member-only hotel, another marina and two 18-hole golf courses.

If a buyer wants to give up that house, the island has its own 23-slip marina capable of accommodating a mega-yacht and tennis courts that convert into a helicopter pad for the brief jet to Miami.

Private island listing comes with 2 homes, 3 apartments and office

The listing comes with:

  • A mainland house with four bedrooms, three bathrooms and a 140-foot dock
  • A ranch-style house on the island with three bedrooms, four-and-a-half bathrooms and a pool
  • Three apartments spread across two structures on the island, ranging from studio to two-bedrooms. The current owners have used these to house caretakers
  • A 23-slip marina on the island with a dock office and master quarters

Each structure on the island has fiber optic cable, water and electricity. The 11 undeveloped lots on the island have the infrastructure ready for building as well.

Hogan said an acre-lot on the mainland sold for $24.5 million recently.

PETER DUNCAN AND RELATIVE OBSCURITY WIN THE 2021 J/70 WORLDS

Peter Duncan and Relative Obscurity Return to the Podium as J/70 World Champion at California Yacht Club

Peter Duncan’s Relative Obscurity has prevailed over 60 other teams and challenging wind conditions to capture the 2021 J/70 World Championship title at California Yacht Club, today. In a five-day series that tested the skill and patience of top-notch competitors from 11 nations, Duncan – sailing with Willem van Waay, Morgan Trubovich and Victor Diaz de Leon – secured a top five position in the beginning of the regatta and never let go.

“I’m elated!” said Duncan as he returned to the dock, bustling with activity. “That was a tough day out there. We didn’t start very well but had a bit of a break with a header on the first run of the second race that let us get close to everybody and sail through some folks we need to sail through,” he explained. “We have a lot of fun onboard – joke and laugh and keep it light – and that worked in our favor when we had to grind through. Everybody knows what their job is, and these guys do them exceptionally well.”

CALIFORNIA YACHT CLUB

Founded originally in 1922 by yachtsmen including Charles Hathaway and Frank Garbutt, the California Yacht Club's first clubhouse was built in Wilmington, CA in Los Angeles' inner harbor (berths nos. 192 & 193), just opposite Terminal Island. Close by were the yards of renowned yacht builders Wilmington Boat Works and Fellows & Stewart (second location). In the club's inaugural year, member yachtsmen formed the first Star class fleet on the Pacific coast. Involved in all aspect of the sport, the club has encouraged a variety of pleasure boating, first in Los Angeles Harbor, and now in Santa Monica Bay.

Over the years CYC has been the club for numerous prominent yachtsmen including Merritt Adamson, Pierpont Davis, Roy E. Disney, J. Paul Getty, Samuel K. Rindge, William Stewart, James Kilroy and navigator extraodinaire, Ben Mitchell. Movie mogul Cecil B. DeMille once served as a trustee of the club and donated a gold cup for powerboat racing. Comedy film producers Al Christie and Hal Roach were both deeply involved in club activities in the twenties and thirties.

Power boating has always been a part of the club's mission along with sailing and rowing. The first CYC powerboat regatta was run in 1922 and the winner was none less than the famous Gar Wood in his Harmsworth Trophy winner Miss America. CYC's Catalina Challenge race for powerboats has been run annually since 1922.

A fire on Thanksgiving Day, 1930 severely damaged the original clubhouse although the heroic efforts of some members saved all of the trophies.

In 1932, several CYC members figured prominently in the sailing events at the Los Angeles Olympic Games. Owen Churchill, inventor of the SwimFin, won the gold medal in the Eight-Metre Class with Angelita.

Unfortunately, the club was forced to relinquish its key location in the East Basin to the Coast Guard for the war effort in 1941. A dormant period followed.

With the development of the long-awaited Marina Del Rey in the early 1960s, the club reformed in '63 and elected Fritz Overton, Commodore in 1923, as head of the "new" club. In 1966, they opened the modern clubhouse and marina facility that is their home today. The radial design of the building allows sweeping panoramic views of the marina.

The California Yacht Club is owned by the Hathaway family, owners of the Los Angeles Athletic Club. The annual "Great Catalina to Marina del Rey Rowing and Paddling Event" pays tribute to Charles Hathaway's row in 1976 from Catalina Island to the club on his 50th birthday.

The unique combination of private ownership and annually elected flag officers has worked well to establish California Yacht Club as one of the outstanding clubs in the nation.

‘Nothing left’: After California Yacht Club fire, residents mourn loss of a beloved spot

Two firefighters injured fighting a massive overnight fire that destroyed

In an instant, an overnight seaside blaze engulfed decades’ worth of boating trophies, historical artifacts and cherished memorabilia at the California Yacht Club in Marina del Rey on Monday.

Fire crews attempted to control the blaze as heavy smoke and flames consumed the two-story building. By the time they had subdued the fire two hours later, only the skeletal remnants of the clubhouse were left standing.

John Myers, senior vice president of the club, said the blaze had been reported by an employee working late in the clubhouse Monday night. The fire spared the remainder of the facilities on the ground, including the docks and the yachts moored there. But the clubhouse, and particularly its second floor, was all but wiped out.

“We are working closely with the Los Angeles County Fire Department in their investigation of the cause of the incident and will share those findings when they become available to us,” Myers said.

The three towers that make up the Marina City Club

Members are left mourning, comparing the loss to the death of a loved one.

Jennifer Dakoske Koslu awoke in Rancho Mirage at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, before the sun had risen, to find her phone inundated with text messages from club members.

The first message she read simply stated, “The CYC is gone.”

“As soon as I opened my phone, it went to a link on the Citizen app and saw a video of the club burning. I was shocked,” Dakoske Koslu said.

For the last 24 years, Dakoske Koslu and her family have been dedicated members of the CYC, whose clubhouse is a few miles away from their home in Playa del Rey. She said it is where her children have grown up, familiarizing themselves with every inch.

“I remember taking my son there on the Fourth of July when he was just 3 weeks old. It was the first place we went with him as a newborn,” Dakoske Koslu said.

She and her husband biked to the club in the aftermath of the fire, greeted by the charred remains of the building on Wednesday afternoon.

“The destruction is unbelievable. It’s clear that the fire was burning intensely on the second floor,” Dakoske Koslu said. “There’s nothing left.”

The second floor once housed a collection of the club’s prestigious racing trophies, kept on display for members and visitors. The fire melted all but a single salvageable California Cup. Most notably, the priceless King of Spain Trophy, acquired in 1929 from King Alfonso XIII, was lost.

Additionally, the club lost cherished photographs of every past commodore, a significant position within a yacht club. Members said they didn’t know if anyone had digitized the images of the commodores or of the club’s founders.

“We would tell yachting stories at the bar around lots of memorabilia, and the yachting artifacts behind the bar are all gone now,” Tom Materna said. “The yacht club provided us a facility for the off-the-water celebrations after hard-fought competition on the water.”

Boats on the water with palm trees in the background

The CYC dates to the early 1920s, started by boat owners from the Los Angeles Athletic Club and other yacht clubs. The Board of Harbor Commissioners approved the first clubhouse in 1922, designed by famed architect Edwin Bergstrom, co-designer of the Pentagon.

In 1965, the yacht club submitted a proposal for an all-encompassing $1-million, two-story, 10,000-square-foot clubhouse on four acres off Admiralty Way. Members envisioned a state-of-the-art facility with 170 boat slips, a guest dock, a small boat hoist and a dry land storage facility for boats. The clubhouse that resulted was dedicated on June 10, 1967.

Then-Commodore William A. DeGroot Jr. told The Times that the triangular parcel of land on which the clubhouse still sits is a “perfectly logical place for a club facility, and a commanding view down the main channel of the marina.”

Though the building has historical significance to its members, it does not have a historic designation, according to Linda Dishman, president of the Los Angeles Conservancy.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and so grateful for the outpouring of support from the community and our members,” Myers said. “CYC has been a beacon for the nautical community for the past 101 years.”

Materna, 68, first found out about the fire through Facebook as friends posted videos and photos of the damage Tuesday morning. Then he began receiving calls and text messages from friends.

“Everybody woke up in the morning and realized we’d lost a significant part of the sailing community,” Materna said.

His connection to the club dates back nearly 52 years, to when he was just 16 years old. After spending 30 years sailing professionally with Hobie Cats, mainly racing catamarans — a watercraft with two parallel hulls of equal size — he recently served as a crew member on other club members’ racing yachts.

The CYC is pivotal in the boat racing community, organizing and hosting events such as the Optimist National Championship and Junior Olympic trials, Materna said. He fondly remembers the hundreds of people from across the globe converging on the marina for similar events.

The main topic among members now is what’s next for the club. Dakoske Koslu noted that the club’s ownership changed over the last few years, and many are unsure and concerned about the club’s continuation after the fire.

The club relocated to the marina in 1967, leasing the land it sits on from the county.

“I don’t think the county has really valued the contributions of the California Yacht Club as an important part of the Marina. They value Trader Joe’s because it’s more money for them,” Dakoske Koslu said.

Dakoske Koslu said she’s seen numerous small marine-oriented businesses displaced from the marina, making way for more commercialized developments such as Trader Joe’s and Recreational Equipment Inc.

This is obviously due to the fact that they consist of pure homogeneous components SiO2 and Al2O3, respectively. It is generally known that impurities, especially the ash elements, are catalytic poisons that reduce the effectiveness of the catalyst. Therefore, carbon sorbents with 5-15% by weight of ash elements in their composition are not used in the above mentioned technologies. However, in such an important field as a gas-mask technique, carbon sorbents (active carbons) are carriers of catalytic additives, providing effective protection of a person against any types of potent poisonous substances (PPS). In ESPE “JSC "Neorganika" there has been developed the technology of unique ashless spherical carbon carrier-catalysts by the method of liquid forming of furfural copolymers with subsequent gas-vapor activation, brand PAC. Active carbons PAC have 100% qualitative characteristics of the three main properties of carbon sorbents: strength - 100%, the proportion of sorbing pores in the pore space – 100%, purity - 100% (ash content is close to zero). A particularly outstanding feature of active PAC carbons is their uniquely high mechanical compressive strength of 740 ± 40 MPa, which is 3-7 times larger than that of  such materials as granite, quartzite, electric coal, and is comparable to the value for cast iron - 400-1000 MPa. This allows the PAC to operate under severe conditions in moving and fluidized beds.  Obviously, it is time to actively develop catalysts based on PAC sorbents for oil refining, petrochemicals, gas processing and various technologies of organic synthesis.
