Nick Cardoza

Nick Cardoza grew up on the water on the south coast of Massachusetts. Ever since he can remember his father took him sailing. Cardoza founded his high school sailing team. “For me the ocean is to the earth as emotions are to people,” he shares. “One day the water will be super calm, the next it is blowing like crazy.” He even equates the ocean to life as an entrepreneur. “Some days everything is smooth, other times it’s chaotic,” offers Cardoza. “And when I want to be calm I think of a sailboat on the horizon.”

As much as he loved boats, he never imagined that he would have a career working with them. At first he took an alternate route to get where he really wanted to be. Inspired by Emeril Lagasse, the celebrity chef who grew up in the next town over, he went to the French Culinary Institute in New York. He worked for Jean-Georges and then honed his culinary meddle in Florence and Sardinia. Ever adventurous he cooked everywhere from South America to the Caribbean.

In St. Barts, he had an realization about his chef life. “I thought, I'm working 7am to 7 pm. The sun goes up at 7am and goes down at 7pm,” he says. Once while Cardoza and his coworker were standing on the dock they saw boat from Rhode Island. ”Buddy, why don't you work on a boat?” the coworker piped up. “You're a chef, you can do it." Cardoza started knocking on boats saying, ‘I’m a chef, you guys need one?’ Not only did he cook on boats, eventually he got his captain's license and was entrusted to deliver boats around the world.

Everything changed when he was working on a boat in the East Hampton Point Marina. A masterpiece of a yacht pulled in and Cardoza was instantly mesmerized. “I had never seen one of these boats before,” he recalls. "The design was modern and minimalistic. It flowed into itself almost like a body of water. There wasn’t a single sharp edge. It had rounded corners. It was like the iPhone of boats.” Cardoza was also captivated by its seamlessness. “Boats are complicated. It’s hard to know how to use them. There are ropes everywhere. This boat was just so darn simple. It was basically turnkey."

The boat was a VanDutch.

Cardoza was so smitten, he offered to do whatever he could just so he could be around the thing. “I said, 'let me wash the boat, do the Newport Boat Show with you. I'll help you set up, break down, whatever you need,'” says Cardoza. I kept asking because I just wanted to be on this boat.”

His persistence paid off, he ended up a deck hand and also helped to drive the boat to shows. At the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show a man walked up to Cardoza to talk shop. “What do you think about that boat across the way?” the guy asked Cardoza about the non-VanDutch one. “Nice boat,” Cardoza replied. “But let me tell you about this one said Cardoza about his beloved VanDutch. This is my favorite.”

It turned out that the guy was one of the VanDutch founders. "I thought to myself, You just blew your shot. You should know who the founders are. You should have done your research,” says Cardoza. But the owner insisted it was totally cool. "If I had known he was the owner, my attitude probably would have changed. But the fact that I didn't know him was actually better," he explains. "I was just telling the guy how I liked the boat."

In fact, the owner was so impressed, he offered Cardoza a gig selling boats. He connected with titans like AndrĂ© Balazs getting them on board. Creating a fierce guerrilla and grass roots marketing campaign he was selling more than ten boats a year. When Swizz Beatz and other heavy hitters needed a boat he became the go-to guy.

Cardoza also discovered how unnecessarily complicated it was to charter a boat. "If someone said, 'I need a boat for a bachelor party or wedding,' I would refer to a charter brokers but there was no central listing system."  They would have a massive chain of fifty emails going back and forth, with pictures and prices. There was no clear way to find what is available. There was no price or inventory transparency.

His idea was to make chartering a yacht as seamless as getting an Uber or Airbnb, but on a higher scale. Cardoza and his business partner Patrick Curley launched YachtLife . With the simplicity of an app, the company offers fully crewed yachts around the world. With the touch of a button, anyone can order a luxury yacht.

“When you’re on a marina, and see a big boat you might say, 'I'd love to go on one of those boats, even just for a day.' And while yacht companies charter boats, nobody is touching these 60 to 120-foot boats for the day,” says Cardoza. “So I thought I want to make that possible. If you can figure that out, you've cracked the code.”

YachtLife list the boats directly from the owners. They handle management and instant booking. and charge customers less than traditional charters. They recently launched a membership club which offers special pricing and special perks with their partners. For example with FlightServe people can take a helicopter from New York City to East Hampton and be on a yacht on East Hampton Point Marina within an hour.

Even with all the success of YachtLife Cardoza says that what still drives him is what drove him all along. "I always think what if I had a $100,000,000 right now?," he says. "What would I do? "I would probably be doing the same thing I'm doing now.  I'd call up a bunch of friends and say, 'let’s go boating.'"

Cardoza shared his best tips for getting your ideas noticed.

Begin with yourself. A lot of people wonder where do I start. Start from within. Take an interest in a subject and dedicate yourself to it. People call it a passion because that is the best word that describes the feeling. You think, this is who I am.

When you are starting a company think of it as a lifestyle. You are your best employee. You have to be your own leader and push your own brand. Be willing to put yourself out there, socialize, network and meet people.

Believe in your product. I was alway passionate about VanDutch for its design. It was the same thing with YachtLife. You want to believe that you are bringing something to market that is better than anything done before.

Think of partnerships. With any type of guerrilla marketing you never really hear about a brand by itself. If you can align your brand with one that has a good reputation and is complimentary to yours, you are miles ahead of the competition. You get exposed to an entirely different customer base for free. It’s invaluable for solidifying your presence in the market.

CARDOZA YACHTS Founder Nicholas Cardoza and His Mission to Revolutionize the Superyacht Industry

nick cardoza yacht life

NY Weekly Staff

  • October 19, 2023

Nicholas Cardoza grew up on the water of the south coast of Massachusetts, but it was only after two stints at culinary school did he realize his true passion: being on the ocean.

Cardoza, who is fluent in Spanish, English, Portuguese, and Italian, received his first boat when he was 10 years old and joined his school’s sailing team

“It was the best time of my life,” says Cardoza.

He went to culinary school in New York and Italy, worked for Jean-Georges and in kitchens in Sardinia and Florence, opened a restaurant in Argentina, and found himself working as a chef on superyachts. It was only then that he realized he was in the wrong profession.

“I hung up my apron and began working my way through the ranks: starting as a deckhand, then graduating to being a captain. I sailed across the Atlantic Ocean twice, learning everything there is to know about boats, and then eventually moved to Miami, FL where I became a yacht broker,” says Cardoza.

Once hailed by Forbes as the ‘go-to guy for celebrities,’ Cardoza, who is now 38, is passionate about revolutionizing the yacht industry and is a master of reinvention, successfully co-founding and building his own tech start-up and starring as the star of the new Paramount+ reality TV show ‘Hot Yachts Miami’.

After discovering how needlessly complicated it was to charter a boat, Cardoza and a business partner launched YachtLife, an Airbnb-esque mobile app in 2015, which allows people to book a fully crewed luxury yacht with the app, bringing transparency and simplicity to the industry.

While holding the role of Vice President at luxury yacht company VanDutch, Cardoza expanded their U.S. operations with a guerrilla marketing campaign during the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, and the brand rose to become one of the most instantly recognizable around the world.

“There are so many ways that the yacht industry can leverage technology to modernize,” he says.

“While other industries like real estate are using artificial intelligence, property management software, and virtual reality to improve the transaction process for clients, the boating industry still has a long way to go, and I want to fix that.”

Cardoza regularly shares his two decades of industry experience on his YouTube channel ‘Mr. Yachts’ and is passionate about mentoring and educating younger people in yachting after working his way up from the bottom of the industry.

“There are way too many people out there who are using their channels to just film boat tour after boat tour and aren’t adding any real value. I want to use my channel to educate people about the true ins and outs of owning and selling boats, and what it’s like to be in this industry.”

Wanting to revolutionize the industry, Cardoza is launching his own brokerage, CARDOZA YACHTS. He is working on a new platform that will shape the future of boating, but he is playing his cards close to his chest.

He also wants to build a business that looks more like a real estate brokerage, allowing hungry and talented younger brokers to make a name for themselves under the CARDOZA YACHTS brand and be properly compensated for their work.

Cardoza frequently mentions Ryan Serhant, the star of Bravo’s ‘Million Dollar Listing New York,’ and the founder of the mega brokerage SERHANT., as an inspiration.

“The boating industry is changing,” he says. “My clients are increasingly younger CEOs and entrepreneurs who are more active owners. They’re looking for convenience and analyze this stuff thoroughly.”

Cardoza’s experience is rare as a broker who also understands boat operations after having served in nearly every crew position.

“My dad used to own a liquor store, and as a kid, I wanted to be just like him. I used to dust and straighten the bottles before graduating to carrying people’s purchases to their cars. He taught me to treat every customer with respect,” he says.

“Lasting customer relationships is core to my philosophy. I grew up in a family business and want to run a family business. It’s about being a helpful person, adding value wherever I can, and going the extra mile.”

Last month, Cardoza quite literally went the extra mile for a client when seat cushions he recently had upholstered blew off the back of his yacht. He immediately went out into the bay looking for the cushions and unbelievably, found them floating a mile out at sea.

However, he warns against becoming too focused on the client, as that can ultimately be detrimental to the client.

“You need relationships with people in the industry, the little guys who help you do your job. It’s important to build relationships with them,” he says, mentioning that engine mechanics, painters, fiberglass repair experts and marine canvas specialists have all come to the rescue in an hour of need.

It’s these relationships that Cardoza has in mind as he plans to host several events throughout the year, which will connect industry specialists and help everybody build relationships so they grow together.

“I constantly ask myself, if I’m not adding value, then what am I doing?” says Cardoza.

'Most hated' Florida yacht broker reveals his most expensive Hot Yachts Miami sale

EXCLUSIVE: Hot Yachts Miami star Nick Cardoza earned the nickname 'Mr Yachts' in his decades of selling the most expensive super-yachts in Florida – and his highest sale was eye-watering

One star of Hot Yachts: Miami has had so many billionaire clients over the years that it's hard to pick a favourite – but Nick Cardoza does remember the most expensive yacht he ever sold.

In the new Paramount+ series, the top yacht brokers in Florida come together for plenty of high-profile deals, and plenty of drama.

Speaking exclusively to Daily Star, Nick refused to give the name of the boat as that would "give it away" – but he did tease: "It had a lot of features. It wasn’t just me selling it, there were other people involved. A lot of these deals are put together by a lot of different brokers at once.

"It was a lot. We had two tenders in the boat, we had a helicopter pad but no helicopter – we left that for somebody else.

Nick

"And one swimming pool, one large Jacuzzi; a lot of technology inside like automatic doors and a spa. But that’s as far as I’ll say!"

And speaking of his 'most hated' reputation, Nick says he's "better than a lot" of people – so he "doesn't care".

He explained: "I just do me. I focus on my business, I work hard, I party hard, I don’t care.

Nick

"Like, every day is a new day and sometimes I travel a lot, sometimes I stay here. I've sold more boats here in Miami than I’ve sold collectively in a long time.

"I don’t know about my reputation, I work really hard. I just launched a new company, so people can think what they want. I’m still better than a lot of them!"

Nick originally earned his nickname Mr Yachts from "always talking about yachts" with pals, joking: "They used to make fun of me when I would walk into a room, saying, 'oh here comes Mr Yachts!' and it just kinda stuck."

The star also isn't afraid to steal a potential client from under another broker's nose.

He admitted: "[I would] only under extenuating circumstances. I reserve that tactic for when other brokers p*** me off or don't play nice.

"It's like, the lion doesn't eat the hyenas unless they p*** him off enough, then it's all out war. I recently had a broker cut me out of a deal so I called the owner of every listing and gave them an offer they couldn't refuse to give me their listing.

"I'll broker a yacht for free just to f*** you back. Don't play with me."

Meet the cast of Hot Yacht Miami, the very glamourous new show

  •  Hot Yachts: Miami goes inside the cutthroat world of yacht brokering in Florida
  • READ MORE:   Britain's most EXTREME estate agents: They can net a fortune from one sale, so no wonder the brokers in a new show will go to any lengths...

An elite group of glamourous, party-loving super yacht brokers, ruthlessly competing to take home eye watering commissions on multi-million dollar vessels is the subject on a new reality TV show.

Charm and romance, together with and a good dose of bitching, backstabbing and drama combine in Hot Yachts: Miami, which starts this week on Paramount+.

Dubbed ' Selling Sunset meets Below Deck' the programme shows off the extreme wealth of the Florida billionaire's playground where everyone looks like a supermodel and tensions run so high that one yacht broker is moved to call a rival a prostitute.

Against a backdrop of swanky parties, sumptuous dinners and beachside penthouses, the brokers will stop at nothing as they compete to sell superyachts to the super-rich.

But they always want more – more money, more sex, more power – and their showdowns are often spectacular.

The stakes are incredibly high. One sale could make the brokers millionaires themselves thanks to commissions of up to ten per cent, and one deal organising a yacht's charter for $1 million (ÂŁ775,000) a week could make them more than most people make in a year.

If you're after a dose of filthy-rich, beautiful people doing battle beneath the Florida sun, get on board Hot Yachts: Miami

The eight-part series on Paramount+ introduces us to some memorable characters whose job it is to sell the super-rich their dream of sailing off into the sunset. At the centre of it are rivals Nick Cardoza and Katya Hall.

Charming and handsome, Nick calls himself 'Mr Yachts'. Forbes magazine called him 'The guy celebrities go to for yachts', and he likes to play as hard as he works – his hobbies seem to be partying and womanising.

By comparison, Siberian-born Katya is the ice queen; she's a top broker at international yacht agency IYC, her clients include Prince Albert of Monaco, and the boats she sells can go for ÂŁ200 million.

Katya says she 'won't get out of bed for less than ÂŁ10 million'.

She's added that she's rented boats out for ÂŁ2.5million for 24 weeks for one client.

But having worked her way up the ladder, Katya is desperate to stay there. The one chink in her armour is her protégée Viktoriya Avramchuk, known as Vika. An impossibly leggy former model, like Katya she's an immigrant.

Born in Kyiv, she moved to Prague when she was 14 and then on to the US at 16.

Katya gave her the job as a favour to Vika's mother Zhanna, who's very good at getting her own way.

Vika's been with Katya for 18 months and is yet to make a sale – though she's very good at flirting with clients. When she turns her attention to Nick, however, Katya is furious and warns Vika that he may not be all he seems.

She says that the secret to success is understanding, to the core, what the client desires and needs and promptly meeting those needs.

Truly glamourous, she's neighbours in Miami with the Beckhams, and has been on Leonardo DiCaprio's yacht

Meanwhile, a third broker, Kaile, also has reason to be furious with both Vika and her mother. While she's showing two clients around some yachts, Vika swoops in and tries to steal one of them away.

Kaile isn't impressed to find a flirtatious Vika and Zhanna drinking champagne with her client, who seems to be revelling in having two brokers fighting over him.

Charming and handsome, Nick calls himself 'Mr Yachts'. Forbes magazine called him 'The guy celebrities go to for yachts'

Enjoying all this drama is Vika's camp colleague Fotis, who believes trying to steal a client from under a rival's nose is bad behaviour and is determined to bring Vika and Kaile together so he can watch the fur fly.

MEET THE CAST

Born in Siberia, Katya is now living the American Dream. One of the top brokers at an exclusive, luxury international yachting firm she says she's not a yacht broker but a SUPER YACHT broker.

She is often referred to as the 'Queen of Super Yachts'.

The boats she sells can go for up to $100,000,000, with her client base including celebs and royals.

Katya is married to an attorney and tech founder and lives in a penthouse overlooking Fort Lauderdale beach, so she can keep an eye on the yachts coming in and out of the harbour.

She has a wardrobe to rival the Kardashians and a friends list that includes the cast of The Real Housewives!

Vika is a socialite and ex-model.

Although she doesn't have her brokerage license yet, she is working under Katya as an associate, a position she managed to get due to her connections and personality (Katya knows Vika's mother also).

Vika is learning from the best in the business but although she knows a lot of potential wealthy clients, she has yet to make a sale.

Vika's social circle is varied as she likes to befriend interesting people who lead colourful lives.

She has a lot of friends who are art dealers, yacht brokers, lawyers, models and actors and knows Leonardo DiCaprio, having spent many years traveling to St Tropez to his gala and to his house in Malibu.

Sassy, beautiful and highly driven, Kaile has been in the yachting world for the last four years and has high ambitions to become the most successful female yacht broker in Florida.

Kaile is aware that she is still relatively new to the industry but she hustles hard and her work on the dock pays off.

Kaile makes a lot of her connections by word of mouth, social media and networking. This is where she has met most of her clients.

Kaile gets frustrated when clients go with a cheaper option and then are left disappointed. She tries to tell her clients that going cheap isn't always best.

Known as 'Mr Yachts' in the industry, a name he has trademarked for himself, Nick is both the most loved and hated yacht broker in Florida.

Everyone knows him. His larger-than-life personality, good looks and charm are in equal measure to his arrogance and desire to win.

Never one to turn down an opportunity to network or party hard, Nick is ready to go 24/7.

Forbes magazine cited Nick as 'THE guy celebrities go to for yachts'. Nick is currently an independent yacht broker and is planning to launch his own yacht booking app.

Liliana, 42

Liliana is of Cuban descent but is Miami born and bred! Boating has been her lifelong passion, which is why she chose to make a career out of it.

And she's made a huge success of working on the charter side of the yacht business, currently managing fifteen active yachts, with an annual charter sales revenue of around $16million.

Her clients are the yacht owners and she represents them in the charter market as the gatekeeper to their yachts. Liliana's clients are all similar - very successful business people who enjoy the fine things in life.

Jack is an under-30 entrepreneur who runs his own luxury concierge business, Coppola Concierge.

As a formally trained butler, at The British Butler Institute in London, Jack has the highest level of service expertise that he uses to create bespoke experiences for each of his clients.

Jack is adamant when he says he only deals with people who fall into these three categories; 'The Millies, The Billies and The Trillies'.

He dreams of retiring by the age of 30 so he can live on a yacht and travel the world while he manages his well-equipped and trusted team back at home. Jack is witty, smart, super competitive and he never takes 'no' for an answer.

He is forever fashionable, Jack dresses impeccably and he loves his Louboutin shoes, Hermes belts and always enjoys a dinner of champagne and caviar. His one-liners are not only hilarious, but 100 per cent honest.

Juno is a well-known broker in Florida and has a high sales success rate. Known in the industry as 'Juno The Boat Guy,' he is a regular on the south Florida yachting and night life scene and says his favourite day of the week is 'The Day I Close A Deal'.

Juno says he's one of the few Black yacht brokers working in the industry and is proud of his Haitian heritage.

He admits the industry is male dominated and would love to see more women as yacht brokers.

My bank account and I have a love-hate relationship; however, I can honestly say living life with a full heart and clear mindset has been the best.”

The post continued, “My family has been so supportive and I just want to publicly thank them. Want the yachting life, even for a day? Miami startup will hook you up

Patrick Curley, co-founder of YachtLife, quit his job in finance in New York to start a mobile tech startup in the hospitality space and moved to Miami three years ago. When visiting, his friends would occasionally inquire about chartering a yacht, and since he had no idea how to go about chartering yachts, he would refer them to Cardoza and VanDutch would help his friends. After a number of times doing this, both Curley and Cardoza realized how the yacht charter industry was still light-years behind other industries - few websites actually list pricing, so customers need to search multiple websites and call brokers for quotes. After receiving quotes from multiple websites, customers then needed to go back to the site with the best quote and finalize all booking details over the phone.

"YachtLife has assembled a top-notch portfolio of some of the nicest yachts for charter in Miami and beyond. Since we removed the middleman and negotiated the best terms, users can now book fully crewed luxury yachts for the day, in most cases without even speaking to a broker - simply choose your yacht, pickup time, and tell us what day you'd like to go out. YachtLife usually confirms your charter within an hour," Curley said. "The YachtLife concierge also helps with any questions before, during or after your charter."

Today, YachtLife operates in South Florida, the Bahamas, the Hamptons, Chicago, New England, Spain, the South of France, Italy, Greece and Turkey. Prices for half-day to multi-day private yacht charters vary widely, but start at about $1,600 in Miami.

YachtLife currently lists about 250 yachts on its platform, from a 40-foot VanDutch to a 154-foot Feadship with a crew of 12 - "It's a 6-bedroom floating mansion on the water with all the water toys you can imagine," Curley said.

Startup spotlight: With the YachtLife app, users can browse available inventory and even book a luxury charter on the fly, without needing to speak to a broker or owner. YachtLife Technologies gives yacht owners a direct way to list their own yachts for day or multi-day fully crewed charters to offset their costs.

Company: YachtLife Technologies

Headquarters: Miami, one of the world's only year-round yachting destinations.

Concept: YachtLife aggregates local inventories of fully crewed luxury yachts and displays them on one platform. The YachtLife app has photos, specs and pricing for all yachts, so users can browse available inventory, and even book on the fly, without needing to speak to a broker or owner. A concierge assists when needed to plan itineraries and attend to the needs of the user to ensure a luxury, fluid and memorable experience, and at prices less than what a broker would typically charge. YachtLife gives yacht owners a direct way to list their own yachts for day or multi-day charters to offset their costs.

Launched: May 2015

Website and social: www.yachtlife.club; @yachtlifeapp; www.facebook.com/yachtlife.club

Management team: Patrick Curley, Nick Cardoza, Anko Mast

No. of employees: 12

Financing: VanDutch Yachts, a leading luxury yacht manufacturer, purchased a stake in YachtLife in 2016. YachtLife is raising a $1 million seed round. An accelerator fund and a handful of angel investors have already committed half of the round.

Recent milestones reached: In February, YachtLife announced it has launched a membership club, and has already attracted a Miami Heat player and other YachtLife users. Members receive discounts on yacht charters and benefits from partners, such as hotels, yacht clubs and restaurants. YachtLife recently signed a deal to act as exclusive yacht provider for the two-weekend long Fyre Festival, a music and cultural festival in spring 2017 in a private cay in the Exumas, Bahamas.

Biggest startup challenge and why: Scaling inventory and opening up new regions. Each region has cultural and legal differences, and you need to really have good on-the-round relationships with luxury yacht owners, brokers, and management companies in order to negotiate favorable deals, the co-founders said.

Next steps: Campaigns to grow inventory in existing areas YachtLife services as well as partnerships with strategic hospitality and luxury brands. After fund-raising, YachtLife will hire a sales rep with group-sales experience in order to target corporations to host events on yachts.
