Guide to Virgin Gorda

A dream destination for hikers and snorkelers

At the eastern end of the British Virgin Islands chain, Virgin Gorda is the quintessential Caribbean idyll, a wild green gem framed by white sandy beaches and home to the geological wonder of The Baths National Park.

Virgin Gorda is the perfect destination for those touring the British Virgin Islands on a crewed yacht charter , with full-service marinas at Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour in Spanish Town and Leverick Bay Marina at North Sound, both of which can accommodate yachts of up to 50m, as well as the newly-rebuilt Bitter End Yacht Club.

The star of the show on Virgin Gorda is The Baths National Park , a dramatic landscape strewn with gigantic boulders, interspersed with shallow pools and grottoes. The park is surrounded by clear, shallow water ideal for snorkelling and swimming and criss-crossed with hiking trails leading into the island’s wild interior.

Spanish Town, the second-biggest settlement in the British Virgin Islands, has a laid-back atmosphere, with life centering around the well-equipped Yacht Harbour, where you will find a small shopping centre and a number of low-key bars and cafes.

Further north, Gorda Peak National Park encompasses one of the few remaining areas of pristine Caribbean dry forest and is easy to navigate along marked hiking trails that lead up to the 418m-high Gorda Peak.

The 260-acre park is an internationally important conservation site, providing a habitat for rare plant species as well as tropical birds and the endemic Virgin Gorda gecko. From the peak, the highest point on the island, there are spectacular views over North Sound, and, on clear days, as far as Anegada .

The crystal clear and shallow waters around Virgin Gorda are perfect for snorkelling, with several great sites worth visiting around the coast. Savannah Bay, halfway along the west coast, is a popular site, with a helpful ‘snorkelling trail’ featuring underwater signs providing information about the rich marine life here, including hard and soft corals and numerous fish species.

Not far offshore from Savannah Bay are The Dogs, a group of five tiny, uninhabited islands surrounded by coral reefs ideal for novice snorkelers, who will discover a variety of colourful fish, corals and sponges in relatively shallow water.

Beginners will also enjoy exploring Mahoe Bay, protected by two coral reefs that are easily accessible from the beach. It’s popular with families and the sandy beach is an attractive setting for a picnic ashore.

Another snorkelling hotspot is Prickly Pear Island, in North Sound, which is also surrounded by fine sandy beaches. Visitors can explore the island along a signed hiking trail, and discover the rich local wildlife and native plant life, including a unique variety of cacti species.

Begin your own discovery of this stunning island by viewing and comparing all private yachts available for  crewed charter in the Virgin Islands .

Leverick Bay - Virgin Gorda British Virgin Islands

Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands, is the second most populated island in the BVI. It’s known for its pristine beaches, turquoise waters, and vibrant marine life. This Caribbean destination offers relaxation, adventure, and natural beauty. Thus, it’s one of the favorite luxury yacht charter destinations for sailors, divers, and beach lovers.

Furthermore, the island is picturesque, with untouched charm and a serene atmosphere. The “Fat Virgin” boasts a unique landscape adorned with rolling hills, hidden coves, and stunning rock formations. It’s also a tranquil escape, away from the crowds. So guests can appreciate the island’s natural wonders and rich cultural heritage.

Overall, this destination offers many attractions. You can see granite boulders, natural pools and grottos, and breathtaking views. Explore the island’s white sand beaches different water activities, and learn about the local culture.

Virgin Gorda’s history is intertwined with its captivating name and notable events. In fact, Christopher Columbus gave its name “Fat Virgin.” This is so because it resembles a reclining woman.

In 1598, a fleet of twenty-six ships led by Sir Francis Drake anchored near the island. They also utilized the large hill at Bitter End to practice for their impending attack on San Juan. They were targeting to control Puerto Rico from Spanish rule.

Overall, these historical events add depth to the island’s charm. It also provides an interesting story to its cultural heritage, making it a popular tourist spot today.

Where is Virgin Gorda located?

Located in the West Indies, it is one of the beautiful British Virgin Islands. This stunning island has a unique geography, approximately 80 miles (130 km) east of Puerto Rico.

It comprises two rectangular sections connected by a narrow strip of land called a spit. The southwestern part features a flat terrain. It also has massive granite boulders. Some have a towering height of over 30 feet (9 meters).

In contrast, the northern region boasts hills. They rise dramatically from the water. The Virgin Peak is the highest point at 1,359 feet (414 meters).

Generally, the region’s weather is typically sunny throughout the year. But it’s particularly popular during the winter months. This is so because people from colder regions seek a Caribbean getaway from the chilly and snowy conditions.

The warmest period is usually in early August. The average highs are around 90.8°F (32.7°C). At nighttime, temperatures rarely drop below 78.9°F (26.1°C).

During winter, accommodation rates are at their highest, and the beaches are bustling with visitors.

On the other hand, the driest months are March, February, and June. The months with the lowest chance of rainfall are in February and early March.

Generally, the wind is moderate, although it tends to be windier in July, August, and June. The busiest or peak seasons are January, July, and August. Thus, hotels are the most expensive due to high demand.

Conversely, October is the least likely month for tourists to visit the island. Thus, making it the least expensive time to travel to the island.

How do you get to Virgin Gorda BVI?

The main airport in the BVI is Tortola’s Terrence B. Lettsome Airport (also known as EIS) . It serves as a gateway for guests coming from Canada, Europe, and South America. Next, you’ll require flights to connect with other Caribbean places like Puerto Rico, St Martin, St Thomas , and Antigua .

Or you can fly from Puerto Rico or St. Thomas to Virgin Gorda Airport on a small plane.

There are also convenient ferry options from the airport to reach the island in 20 minutes. Other transfer options include:

Virgin Gorda Yacht Club and Village Cay Marina to be redeveloped

virgin gorda yacht marina

The BVI Investment Club (BVIIC) is looking towards the redevelopment of Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour and Village Cay Marina to accommodate larger yachts and boost business to aid in the recovery from Hurricanes Irma and Maria and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking at their 30th Anniversary Press Conference yesterday, President Meade Malone said the club has an overall and complete development plan for Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour which includes the accommodation of mega and super yachts.

“I am happy to report that we are very much in hand in moving the Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour forward towards that vision. You will begin to see in the soon coming weeks work around beautification of the area and enhancement of that,” Malone said.

The President also noted that the Yacht Club is not full, but the BVIIC has a blueprint around the tenants they would like to have, and he thinks it would enhance the overall offerings to Virgin Gorda and the wider community.

“We are working steadfastly towards attracting and putting those tenants in place. So, it is not full, and we work with Smith’s Gore to help us navigate through to the proper and complete tenancy of Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour and we are working towards that, particularly after Hurricane Irma and now after the coming of COVID-19,” Malone said.

Village Cay Marina

The Investment Club President noted that Village Cay Marina is also one of their premier assets and the key feature of the area is the marina facility. He noted the club is looking to further develop the marina aspect and work has already been done but his team is looking to do more.

“In the future, we are looking to do some dredging in the harbour which will help us to accommodate bigger yachts in the marina and that is key for us. On the land side, we have a vision in place of having some studies done by OBMI and another consultancy around the total redevelopment even of the land side of village cay marina,” Malone said.

“Those are things we will focus on in the next phase of development. Where we are right now is really settling ourselves after the pandemic and you will begin to see, and the public will begin to see some of those movements for Village Cay,” he added.

As wild as a tick on a dead cow

So wonderful to see the Belongers at BVINews censoring and deciding which comments to publish. Free speech is gone in the BVI along with laws. Only thing that remains is lawlessness, drug running and very corrupt politicians. And the Foy is worried about image. Lmfao.

A good simple starting point would be to get power and water on the existing docks, repair the existing damaged bulkheads and the old supermarket, and maintain mosquito control. Thos steps would allow the marina to be profitable and then warrant further steps to grow once a actual foundation is in place.

The vision of the investment club has been “suck out all the money and don’t reinvest” not sure if they will ever have the ‘vision’ fix this mess..

@Vision – Village Cay was a good operation for 30 years… The centre of town, the place to meet and be seen. Not so much these days. I know it goes against the grain of the Club, but they need to knock down all of Village Cay, including the docks, and build anew. Use that property footprint to its full extent. Build something with a vision towards lasting the next 40 years – and reclaim that centre of town position. This sadly will not happen, that would involve “investing”.

VGYH and VC marina have deteriorated so much in the last 20 years a better investment decision might be to just put both on the market and get out of the marina/boatyard business in the BVI. A prime example is Yacht Haven Marina in St. Thomas. The original docks built in the 60’s were so deteriorated by 2000 it was a better decision to sell the property and docks to a developer, who tore down all the old buildings and docks and built a well designed megayacht marina with new condos ashore. It takes money to make money. Nickel and dime repairs in the luxury yacht/condo market don’t cut it.

Couldn’t agree more. Both places have been so badly neglected that to bring them back will require a major cash injection and the (so called) “investment” club has shown themselves to be entirely incapable of running these marinas. We badly need some more decent marinas in BVI and VCM and VGYH could be wonderful with the investment, vision and good management.

Hit the nail directly on the head with a sledge hammer. Sell VGYH and get people in who know what they are doing and care. BVIIC has let VGYH disintegrate since the purchase. What was once a THRIVING marina & boatyard is no longer. Sure… put up some buildings which have been EMPTY for years and that’s it.

“Investment” has always seemed a misnomer, for an organization that is devoted to receiving cheques, not writing cheques.

Greedy gluttons

Will they be taking recommendations from the surrounding communities as to what will actually benefit the area? Mega yachts are seasonal, so what will provide profits and jobs the rest of the time?

For mega yachts to call VGYH or VCM their homeport or even haul for repairs you have to have the essential land based amenities available that these vessels would need and the essential repair & refit of these vessels. The investment needed at both VGYH & VCM will need millions of $$$$ to attain the status they “talk” about. And boy ….. we’ve heard the talk but have NEVER seen walk.

The next set ah underhand cr**ks!!

Best you guys quit while you’re ahead, sell it and collect your check and keep out of that line of business. There is proof that the leadership has no idea of what’s required to operate a real marina in VG.

Ok, How do you turn a mega yacht around in the VG marina. No room!

The horrible mismanagement of both of these assets including the seizure by customs of many of the yachts in storage at these facilities proves to me that their basic management team is incapable. Why would megayachts come when there are no services available for them? You bought a multimillion dollar travelift how many years ago and what does it do besides haul ferries? import duty structure coupled with a lack of services the mega yachts might require mean this work will never come here. These yachts plan years in advance their refit works and only use reputable yards with longstanding track records for exceptional work.

All the service people that were in Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbor were eliminated before Irma – with the idea that The Investment Club could build a Yacht Service center in the North Yard…they hired 2 alcoholic managers to oversee this and you can now see what we have! NOTHING. No idea how to manage a Boat Yard. No idea how to hire or deal with people. No communication with the community. They seem to be working on making the place look bad and people that live nearby feel marginalized. I don’t think I will never forgive them for cutting down all those beautiful Australian Pines…

If Villge Cay doesn’t fix the sewage problem no Mega yacht will stop there. It is the marina of last choice due to the sewage and smell

Over ten years ago, a close personal friend, who happened to be President of the largest chain of salt water marinas on the US West Coast, and who had personally overseen the development of most of their properties, visited me in the BVI. At the time, I was a long term slip renter, well known to management, who were then (as always) talking about improvements. I asked my friend if he could do an assessment of the needs and condition of Village Cay, and advice as to how to proceed to bring it to true international standards, and he kindly agreed. After doing a careful survey, at no cost and as a fovour to me, we were supposed to meet with Investment Club reps, and Mr. Malone. Of course, the meeting was cancelled at the very last moment (we were basically stood up), with the explanation that they preferred to use the skills of the various Investment Club Committee members. So, we will see if anything changes!

BVI Investment club are a either in the business of money *** or the most inept group of people to ever think that they could be an investment club. Virgin Gorda yacht harbor has gone from a first class destination harbor to a rat infested hole under their watch. Don’t cry me a river about Hurricane Irma, blah blah blah. The way they treated the boat owners who’s boats were destroyed by their lack of preparedness was truly eye opening. 90% of those who had boats there will NEVER COME BACK after the way they were treated. In the four years since there is so little progress in rebuilding that most boaters avoid VGYH altogether. They have had multiple chances to show good faith and have done nothing but not show up .. wake up, they are not your friend.

What everyone has said in the comments already posted and more ! BVIIC has destroyed the VGYH complex and they know it. It is obvious they have done the same to VCM. All any of us have heard from the BVIIC regarding VGYH is basically silence. Maybe 3 community meeting in 15-20+ years – which never ended well for BVIIC. They have never been interested in the concerns of the VG community and what one sees today is the evidence. Sure Irma decimated the BVI but VGYH was already in complete disrepair prior to that. All the BVIIC has done all these years has put superficial changes to a product in a futile effort to disguise its fundamental failings. They have no clue how to successfully operate anything in the marine industry.

We don’t want no foreigner buying it though. HVe seen the plans. I have confidence it iwill get done and be better than it was before

Ahhh…. seeing “plans” and following through on those “plans” are two different things. We on VG looked at a huge drawing/rendering posted in full view in the marina for 10+ years !!!! Then it was removed because little happened – except two very, very expensive large buildings which sit almost empty to this day. So much for “plans/drawing renderings”. A north section of the marina, which they completely denuded for so called mega yachts, which have yet to show. The only vessels in that yard are a few ferry boats and in hurricane season hauled bareboat fleets. So….. drawings/plans/renderings mean NOTHING !!

Can they even pay their small staff?

I parked my boat in Village Cay docks yesterday…they were empty (there was a broken down catamaran on B dock and our boat – 30 empty slips). These jokers are bad news. What they have done to Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbor is criminal. The Yacht Harbor was the center of Virgin Gorda for years. Then the Investment Club started to kick out the long term commercial tenants…the only saving grace is that the relocated businesses are now thriving and were able to survive in better locations during Irma. The Yacht Harbor is now rebuilt and empty – who needs that in their community?? The Investment Club is BAD for the BVI. Someone should stop this mess.

BVI biggest boy business is the 40-60 footers, year round. Sadly they’ll chase shiny mega yachts who don’t actually spend their money in the BVI

Sailing in Virgin Gorda: 7 days sailing itinerary

Catamaran itinerary around virgin gorda (longer), marine gas in virgin gorda.

Virgin Gorda has a tropical climate. It is hot during the entire year, but the dominant trade winds somewhat cool the air down. The period between December and March is usually milder, with an average temperature of 24–25° Celsius. It is very hot between May and October: the daily average temperature is around 28° Celsius. The dry period lasts from January to April; the driest months are February and March. You can expect heavy rainfalls from May to December. The hurricane season is from July to October – it brings strong winds and heavy rains. The sea is warm during the whole year, with an average temperature of 27° Celsius.

The sailing season is between December and April. During this time, the weather is not so hot and the amount of precipitation is also smaller; there is also a lower risk of tropical storms and hurricanes. The wind is northeasterly during the winter months, then blows towards the east in February and changes its course to the southeast by June. It usually has a velocity of 28–38 km/h, with the exception of the Christmas winds with 50 km/h. The seas are fairly calm. Check the Check the sailing conditions and wind rose diagram of Virgin Gorda .

Prickly Pear

Prickly Pear is opposite Virgin Gorda, located in North Sound. After it became a national park in 1988, the infrastructure of the island could not be further developed. The island does not have permanent residents, but there is a beach bar and great water sports facilities. The island’s most wonderful beach is at the southwestern tip of the island. There is a part above Vixen Point where we can encounter corals, so we should be careful. It is a great place if we need some peace and quiet. There are ten mooring buoys nearby and a harbour for smaller boats. Another perfect spot for securing our boat can be found at the Cactus Reef at the northwestern corner of the island. It is not among the most frequently used docking places, despite the fact that it is protected well and there is also an amazing view from here.

Eustatia Island

Eustatia is north of Virgin Gorda and south of Prickly Pear. In 2004, Eustatia was listed among the 20 most beautiful islands in the world by Islands Magazine. Approaching the island requires serious attention and thoroughness. There are shallow areas north of Prickly pear and in the channel around Saba Rock as well. Low draft boats can find great moorings on the southern, northern and eastern parts. We especially recommend the northern coast. The seabed is sandy and a reef protects this area. Make sure to leave enough space for the boat to swing as there are many coral reefs around. We can choose from many water sports here like diving, surfing, or wakeboarding. In addition, you can rent a clear-bottom kayak and discover the waters of North Sound while paddling.

Dog Islands

Islands of Virgin Gorda

Fallen Jerusalem Island

Fallen Jerusalem is less than 1 km from the southern tip of Virgin Gorda. There are robust cliffs, ruins and deserted sandy beaches on the island. These coastal formations form special basins. Since the island is mostly untouched, it is home to several unique birds and exotic plant species. If you are sailing here, you can explore undiscovered tunnels and caves. Although you cannot moor here for the night, during the day you can anchor at North Lee Bay. But be careful because these coastal rock formations can play tricks with the navigation.

Biras Creek

Biras Creek is in the eastern part of Virgin Gorda. If the weather turns bad, it provides shelter. As you approach, pay attention because there is an obstacle on the south side, amile from the resort, Oyster Rock. Fortunately, the rock is marked with a red buoy. You should pass it on the left side. Biras Creek is very popular among sailors who come to Virgin Gorda. In the evenings, you can admire the sunset or the glimmering reflection of the moon on the open water. Each one creates a very romantic atmosphere.

Bitter End is in the northern part of Virgin Gorda, where the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean meet. It owes its name to its lonely and therefore idyllic location with fabulous views over North Sound. Thanks to the protected marina and constant trade-winds, it is a sailor’s paradise. It has amazing marine life. The water is full of beautiful corals and fish. The local yacht club is a full-service marina with electricity, drinking water, ice and more than 15 berths.

Virgin Gorda sailing itinerary

Day 1. Bitter End – Necker Island

3, 00 km (1, 86 mi) Necker Island is about 3 km from the northern tip of Virgin Gorda. The island is almost entirely surrounded by coral, except for a narrow passage in the southern parts. We can drop anchor in this 4 km area. If you love animals, you will love this island. The wildlife is rich, many exotic birds live here.

Day 2. Necker Island – Long Bay

8, 00 km (4, 97 mi) Long Bay is a beautiful, crescent-shaped beach and marina on the northwest coast of Virgin Gorda, behind Mountain Point. This place rarely gets the attention it deserves. However, you should always check the weather forecast before visiting, as sometimes the waves tend to raise the level of the seabed. Thanks to its location, the beach is shaded in the morning, but for the rest of the day it is beautifully bright and the sunset is gorgeous from here.

Day 3. Long Bay – George Dog – St. Thomas Bay

8, 95 km (5, 56 mi) We cannot miss Spanish Town when we sail around Virgin Gorda. There are moorings at St. Thomas Bay, right next to the ferry port. The yacht marina is a few minutes’ walks from the beach. There are also shops, a grocery store, and a beautiful beach.

Day 4. St. Thomas Bay – Fallen Jerusalem – Cooper Island, Manchioneel Bay

Port of Virgin Gorda

Day 5. Cooper Island – Biras Creek Marina

20, 50 km (12, 74 mi) Biras Creek is a very popular yacht marina, and one of the best marinas on the east coast of the island. There are 18 berths, but you can drop anchor outside the marina as well. A thin but high-ridged isthmus separates the anchorage from the sea. There is a fuel dock not far from the marina.

Day 6. Biras Creek – Eustatia

8, 55 km (5, 32 mi) As mentioned earlier, the island features moorings. If you want to relax for a while, there are three beautiful, white sand beaches where we can go swimming or diving. The island’s marine life is amazing and the name itself is apt, too. Eustatia is a Greek word, it means a good place to stay.

Day 7. Eustatia – Saba Rock – Bitter End

1, 05 km (0, 7 mi) Kilbride, the founder of the Introductory SCUBA Course arrived at Saba Rock during the ’60s and made the territory his own base. After a few years, he opened his bar, Pirates Pub here, then he established some berths as well. With time, this tiny piece of land became a shelter for skippers. Later he sold the place and a holiday resort was built here. They kept the berths though, and the place is still attractive thanks to the sailing-oriented attitude.

This route also starts from the northern shore of Virgin Gorda, but first, we head towards Anegada. From there, we turn southwest and sail all the way to Jost van Dyke. On the way back we sail on the western and northern side of the island. The legs are longer, but this is a very popular trip in the Caribbean.

Day 1. Bitter End – Prickly Pear 1, 55 km (1 mi) Day 2. Prickly Pear – Anegada, Setting Point 23, 65 km (14, 69 mi) Day 3. Setting Point – Trellis Bay, Beef Island 35, 30 km (21, 93 mi) Day 4. Trellis Bay – Great Harbor, Jost van Dyke 23, 90 km (14, 85 mi) Day 5. Great Harbor – Scrub Island 25, 60 km (15, 91 mi) Day 6. Scrub Island – Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbor 8, 40 km (5, 22 mi) Day 7. Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbor – Leverick Bay – Bitter End 27, 70 km (17, 21 mi)
