International 8 Meter Class

Eight Metre boats (often called “Eights” or 8mR) are a construction class, meaning that the boats are not identical but are all designed to meet specific measurement formula, in this case International Rule. Before WW II Eights were the most prestigious international yacht racing class, and they are still actively raced around the world. “Eight metre” in class name does not, somewhat confusingly, refer to length of the boat, but product of the formula. 8mR boats are on average some 15 metres long. Between 1907 and 2008 approximately 500 8mR boats were built, 177 of them have survived until today.

The International Rule was set up in 1907 to replace earlier, simpler handicap system which were often local or at best, national, and often also fairly simple, producing extreme boats which were fast but lightly constructed and impractical. The Eight Metre class was the medium size rating established under the rule and they were chosen as an Olympic class in 1908 Summer Olympics. The Eights remained in the Olympics until 1936.

New, modern eights are still built utilising newest contemporary technologies, at the rate of 1-3 boats per year. During 1980s, many old sailboat classes experienced a revival of interest. The Class has undergone a renaissance which has continued to the day, with many old yachts restored or rebuilt to racing condition, and 8mr competition is once again thriving with 25-35 boats participating annually at the 8mR Worlds. “The International Eight Register” includes 177 identified existing boats of a total of approximately 500 boats built from 1907 until today.

The 8 Metre is one of the potential Vintage Yachting Classes for the 2012 Vintage Yachting Games.

PRESTIGE M8: the new flagship of the M-Line fleet

Built at the Groupe Beneteau Italia shipyard in Monfalcone, the new M8 was masterfully designed by Garroni Design, the studio that crafted the identity of PRESTIGE from its beginnings, over 30 years ago. The result is a unique and distinctive multihull yacht with unparalleled surfaces and dimensions, and a hull which, designed from the start uniquely for a motor yacht, offers the upmost comfort with over 270 m2 of living space and spacious suites.

“ The new M8 represents a concentration of innovation. Her contemporary lines, high-performance hull design, and innovative layouts place this new model at the top of the multihull motor yacht category. The exterior lines have been designed to reveal a bold, distinctive personality. Here, there is no reference to the world of sailing catamarans, as so often is the case. Proportions are typical of a powerful, contemporary motor yacht. The M8 is a true villa on the sea. The layout, living spaces, ease of movement and safety on board have been designed to optimize the experience of the owners and their family, ” explains Camillo Garroni, designer of the M8.

PRESTIGE M8: smooth and fuel-efficient cruising

The new Prestige M8 is a multihull yacht designed for maximum comfort and well-being on board. Two hulls, rather than one, guarantee a smooth and linear cruising experience, ensure natural stability and perfect seaworthiness even in heavy seas. This multihull, equipped with twin Volvo D8 600HP engines, handles particularly well in maneuvers at port and enables guests to benefit from every living space in ideal conditions. Cruising aboard the M8 is a unique and eco-friendly experience thanks to her extraordinary fuel efficiency: the yacht, in fact, consumes half as much fuel than a monohull with the same volume of living space. As an option, the Silent Boat Pack integrates a large surface area of solar panels and a substantial lithium battery bank.

“ It is the team of Marc Lombard, world-renowned in the yachting world, who designed the hulls of the M8 ,” explains Rosalie Le Gall, Product Manager at PRESTIGE . “ The power catamaran will be certified in category A; the hulls are designed for passing smoothly through the waves at any speed, for up to 20 knots. The multihull configuration offers great stability at anchor and while under way. The M8 offers the space and luxury equivalent to that of an 85-foot monohull, with much greater comfort and connection with the sea” , continues Rosalie Le Gall – “She consumes half the fuel, due to her lighter, lesspowerful engines. The systems on board have also been optimized in order to reduce energy consumption by 50%. With this, we can operate the yacht at night and several hours during the day, using only the batteries, affording a gentler lifestyle for all on board”

Modular exterior and a Miami-inspired atmosphere

The M8 offers a Miami-inspired elegant and sophisticated atmosphere, with streamlined and contemporary living spaces: each detail is carefully studied for an uncompromised luxury experience. The priority is placed on the most rigorous quality standards and customization, offering a variety of interior versions with new materials and colours, and a new finish worthy of the largest yachts.

“With this new project, PRESTIGE has once again raised the bar. You can see it, feel it, in the experience on board – confirms Valentina Militerno de Romedis, Interior Decorator – A multihull is, by definition, a platform for meeting, for sharing, but it is also a place where the sky and sea meet and merge, and it is from this that we drew the inspiration for the Miami color palette and concept. Outdoor spaces such as the main deck, 32-square-meter cockpit, and flybridge are designed to allow for free movement on board and, of course, for maximum relaxation: with a large 4.20-meter-wide moving platform that serves as a beach club, a large locker for storing equipment and water toys, and a full steering position on the flybridge, on which is also a large lounging area, the M8 is ideal for enjoying the sea in all its facets.

Dreamlike interiors immersed in luxury

PRESTIGE’s new M8 offers an unparalleled luxury experience not only in her exterior, but also, and perhaps most importantly, in her interior spaces. Every detail of the design has been taken care of, with special attention paid to the refinement and quality of the materials used, all of which are high-end and exceptionally refined. The living spaces are large and flooded with natural light, with a U-shaped galley and a modular salon that spans almost 50 m2. The master stateroom then is like a real private apartment reaching an unparalleled 30 m2 of luxury, which also distinguishes the three additional guest cabins, including a VIP suite.

Sparkman and stephens 40ft 1965 cruiser racer yacht for sale, wooden ships comments on this bermudan sloop classic yacht.

40ft Bermudan sloop rigged yacht designed by Sparkman and Stephens to the International Cruiser Racer 8 meter rule.  Built by McGruer and Co. Ltd to Lloyds 100A1 in 1965.

McGruer were known for their run of ‘Cruiser Racer 8m’ yachts, a popular design that offered a fast and easily handled cruising yacht capable of club racing at weekends.  The commissioning owner of this yacht was an industrialist from Glasgow and approached Sparkman and Stephens to design him a yacht to the International Cruiser Racer 8m rule.  He then asked McGruer to build the yacht and the result is a superb vessel of top-quality construction with arguably prettier lines than McGruers own CR8m yachts.

Her construction is a composite design using galvanised frames interspersed between steamed oak timbers.  In the previous 30 year ownership, the yacht was subjected to a rigorous maintenance program including complete refastening of the galvanised frames with stainless bolts, each one insulated from the frames to avoid electrolysis.  She is now in excellent condition and very original with only a few alterations to bring her up to date.

Bought by the current owner in 2021, she is sadly offered for sale due to family circumstances.  A comprehensive 2021 survey is available to potential purchasers.  This is a very beautiful classic yacht in good condition, ready for next season to go cruising or racing.

Construction

Carvel planked in mahogany, possibly Honduras or similar high quality mahogany timber.

Alternating steamed oak timbers and galvanised steel frames.  Copper rivet fastened through the oak timbers and bolted with stainless steel bolts through the galvanised frames.  Each bolt is insulated from the galvanised frames with a ‘top hat’ washer.

Some galvanised steel strap floors across the centreline.  Further aft she has more recent stainless steel plate floors side fastened to the galvanised angle iron frames.  The stainless steel is insulated from the galvanised frames with a rubber gasket.

External lead ballast keel fastened with stainless steel keel bolts.  Bolts last drawn in 1990.

Pair of galvanised angle iron ring frames in way of the rigging, tied into the galvanised mast step.

Spruce beamshelf with a spruce clamp in way of the rigging

Marine plywood deck on spruce deck beams, cascover sheathed externally and finished with non-slip deck paint.  Varnished teak toe rail all round with stainless steel stanchions and guard wires.

Varnished teak coachroof coamings with a sheathed plywood coachroof deck.  Slightly raised dog house aft with a companion hatch offset to port.

Self draining cockpit well with seating at deck level and varnished teak cockpit coamings.  Bridge deck to the entrance hatch.

Stainless steel tiller and rudder stock to a laminated mahogany rudder.

Masthead bermudan sloop rig on a keel stepped gold anodised alloy mast.  This is the original mast and in keeping with her pedigree.

Round section alloy slab reefing boom original to the boat.  Stainless steel gooseneck fitting.  Second shorter IOR boom with accompanying mainsail and second mainsheet track.

2 x alloy spinnaker poles.

Stainless steel standing rigging in 1×19 wire, all replaced in 2006.  Forestay new in 2017.

Internal stainless steel chain plates secured to the galvanised frames.

Running rigging replaced in 2021 using Dyneema.

Kanzaki mechanical gearbox with an AquaDrive flexible coupling to a fixed 3 blade bronze propeller.  Gives 5 knots cruising speed.

2 x 12 volt batteries for engine starting and domestic systems, 1 x 100ah and 1 x 120ah, both new in 2018.  Charged from the 55amp engine alternator.

17 gallon stainless steel fuel tank with Tek Tank gauges.

32 gallon stainless steel water tank under the saloon cabin sole.

2 x manual bilge pumps.

Accommodation

5 berths including a quarter berth, 2 x saloon settee berths and 2 singles berths in the forecabin.

Original cabin layout and joinery in mahogany veneered plywood with a satin varnish finish.

Steps down from the companion hatch over the engine box into the main cabin with chart desk and quarter berth to port and galley to starboard.

To port is a quarter berth stretching aft under the cockpit thwart.  Chart desk forward of the berth with drawers that pull out beneath.

Galley has a twin burner gimballed gas stove with oven.  Single stainless steel sink with cold water pumped with a manual foot pump.  Top loading locker next to the sink with lockers under the deck head.  Large storage space going aft from the galley under the cockpit thwart.

Half height bulkhead forward of the galley with a vertical stainless steel grab rail separates off the main saloon.

Saloon settee berth either side with new tartan upholstery in 2021.  The backs fold down on a sophisticated hinge mechanism to create wide comfortable berths.

Centreline saloon table with fold out leaves.  Sole boards in solid mahogany.

Starboard side passage going forward with the heads compartment to port.  The door to the heads hinges to double up as a door into the forward cabin.

Heads compartment has a manual Baby Blakes sea toilet which discharges directly overboard.  Stainless steel hand basin with manually pumped fresh water.  Large storage lockers outboard under the side decks.

Forward cabin is very nicely appointed with 2 single berths.  Trotter boxes at the forward end giving more length to the berths.  Mahogany lockers either side under the side decks.

Small seat between the berths, the forward bulkhead has an oval hole allowing access to the forepeak storage space, used for stowage of sails, fenders and warps.

Motor Yacht

M/Y PANAM is the fifth Fuoriserie motor yacht by CCN following 50 m MY Elsea, 40 m MY Kanga, 27 m MY Freedom, and 31 m MY Vanadis, and marks a new prestigious collaboration between CCN and leading international designers. Indeed, this yacht has been penciled by Francesco Paszkowski Design, who took care of both exteriors and interiors, the latter in cooperation with Margherita Casprini.

  Sleek and aggressive, this vessel stands out for her impressive performances, ensured by the aluminum alloy hull and three V16 2000 MTU engines and three KaMeWa water-jet engines, which push her up to a maximum speed of 31 knots and a pleasant cruising speed of 25. All technical components, the mast and the roll bar are in carbon fiber, so as to reduce overall weight. The straight bow endows this yacht with a a modern, dynamic and powerful look, further enhanced by the large irregular-shape windows that let plenty of natural light into the interior saloon. The layout features a large salon on the main deck, separate from the dining area thanks to a “green” wall. Forward, the full-beam master suite is fitted with a walk-in wardrobe and a bathroom with hammam. Two folding balconies open up on the sides. Four guest cabins are located on the lower bridge, which also hosts the professional galley. On this same deck, forward, are the captain’s cabin, 2 double cabins, the laundry and the crew mess. Behind the engine room is the semi-float-in garage storing a 17’ tender, while a pleasant beach area can be enjoyed aft, open on three sides and fitted with a beach platform transformer granting very easy access to the sea. The 65 sq m fly bridge features a large aft custom-made pool with counter current swimming system, while a sunbathing area can be found at the bow.

The most exciting yacht debuts at the 2024 Cannes Yachting Festival

Running from 10 to 15 September, the Cannes Yachting Festival consistently delivers one of the finest displays of yachts in the world. The lineup also tends to include several world-class premieres from shipyards eager to present their latest designs across Port Vieux and Port Canto. BOAT takes a closer look at some of the hottest debuts of 2024...

Builder : Tankoa Yachts Length : 45m

The largest debut so far, Go is the first unit in Tankoa's T450 series and was handed over to her "young" North American owner in July 2024. Several customisations were requested for the model, including larger windows on the main deck and a longer upper deck saloon. These alterations increased the interior volume from 435GT to 450GT. Other highlights include a hydromassage tub on the sundeck, an upper deck gym and firepit and a sliding sunpad that closes the swimming pool during navigation. Exterior design is by Giorgio M. Cassetta .

Builder : Cantiere delle Marche Length : 44.3m

Sold to an experienced German owner, Maverick is the inaugural vessel among a trio of Flexplorer 146 yachts. She has been described as a "true explorer vessel", featuring a robust exterior by Hydro Tec , a custom-built A-frame crane and a 22-millimetre ice-belt above and below the waterline to ensure safe navigation at the highest latitudes. On the leisure side, a large infinity pool is included on the aft deck, which can be covered and used as storage for deck furniture when underway. Other features include a gym, a sauna and a diving centre.

Builder : Ocean King Length : 40.4m

This unit has been pledged to an "esteemed" Italian owner and was last seen publicly ahead of her sea trials . Her rugged, explorer-style exterior is by Design ALot Studio, while naval architecture is owed to inNave . All social spaces are well connected, including a formal dining room on the upper deck which leads into the sun deck with its bar and swimming pool. Meanwhile, a large beach club with two fold-out balconies will allow guests easy access to the sea. Accommodation is for 10 guests, including a master cabin forward on the main deck arranged with an en suite bathroom and private study.

Builder: AB Yachts Length: 39m

With a beam of 7.5 metres, the AB125's sporty profile belies an impressive internal volume which the Italians shipyard claims will be “even more generous” than its 220GT predecessor, the AB120. Key to this unit's design is convertible on board space. The sliding doors of the salon, once open, connect the interiors and exteriors and integrate the salon, aft cockpit and beach area into one 140-square-metre area. Like her predecessor, she will be able to reach an eye-watering top speed of 40 knots and navigate incredibly shallow ports and anchorages, as seen in the Bahamas and the Caribbean.

Builder : Custom Line Length : 38.8m

Telli was launched in February 2024 as the first unit in the Navetta 38 series. The new model was created from a desire to temper the nautical tradition of the Navetta series with a young, sporty style, according to design studio Citterio Viel . There is also a focus on indoor-outdoor connection seen best in the 70-square-metre beach area and the glazing that circles the sundeck, which measures an impressive 15 metres long. Accommodation is split across five cabins, including a main deck owner's cabin of over 40 square metres.

Builder : Pendennis Length : 34.9m

This highly-anticipated compact explorer yacht was delivered from Pendennis ' yard in Falmouth this May. Her name, Fox , is owed to Falmouth's famous inventor Robert Were Fox the Younger, a 19th-century scientist who invented a special type of compass which ultimately allowed exploration (and the discovery of) the South Pole. The newly built explorer yacht 's interior and exterior styling is by Q London, with highlights including a 103.5-square-metre open aft deck, as well as a DJ station, a glass-walled sky lounge and a dedicated wine fridge. Accommodation encompasses a full-beam main deck master cabin and a further four en suite cabins.

Builder : Van der Valk Length : 34.1m

One was commissioned by experienced owners who have spent more than three decades on the water. Their brief was to "blend their own design with a proven hull form" and they initially wanted a larger yacht, but a compromise was reached to hit "Van der Valk’s sweet spot for a slightly smaller size". Her functional exterior is owed to Guido de Groot , while the interior is the work of Carla Guilhem . With its skylounge, main deck saloon and multifunctional beach club-cum-sports-garage, the configuration revolves around entertaining large groups of people. Accommodation is across five staterooms, including a full-beam master on the main deck.

Builder : AB Yachts Length : 33.5m

Characterised by a sporty exterior and eye-watering maximum speed of 45 knots, this model is the first in a new range designed entirely by Archea Associati . According to the shipyard, the AB110 remains unchanged from previous models in terms of performances, noiselessness and the absence of any vibration while further increasing on board liveability and comfort. Imagery is undisclosed but her interiors have been described as loft-like, "charming" and defined by an "all-pervading brightness" as a result of generous glazing on the main deck.

Builder : Numarine Length : 30.7m

The first hull in Turkish yard Numarine 's 30XP series will make her world debut at Cannes. The first Numarine yacht to be fitted with hybrid propulsion, Minella has been designed inside and out by Can Yalman , although an alternative version of the interiors has been created in collaboration with Istanbul-based Ofist Design Studio. The design philosophy is "inspired by a sustainable, Scandinavian design aesthetic". Accommodation is for up to 10 guests across five en suite cabins, comprising four guest cabins on the lower deck and a master cabin on the main deck forward.

DreamCatcher

Builder : Nautor Swan Length : 28.3m

First revealed in 2021 at a virtual press conference, DreamCatcher was delivered to her owner in July this year. She is the Finnish shipyard's first hybrid sailing yacht with "feminine exterior lines" penned by veteran Swan designer German Frers . Described as a "no-compromise cruiser with a racer soul", she has a draught of four metres, with options for a shallow-draught, telescopic and performance keel. Her warm, classic interiors are the work of Misa Poggi , with accommodation for 10 guests, comprising an owner’s cabin located forward and four guest en suite cabins. 

Builder : Wider Yachts Length : 28m

Italian shipyard Wider Yachts ' first multihull offering, Acali , was designed in collaboration with Luca Dini and built to RINA class. Offering large interior volumes, highlights come in the form of a dedicated owner's deck, an expansive beach club and a hybrid propulsion system. The owner's suite has a private foredeck lounge, while the tender garage can transform into a spacious swim platform. The 67-square-metre beach club benefits from fold-down bulwarks, direct access to the VIP cabin and discreet water toy storage. Accommodation on the 28-metre composite catamaran is for eight guests across four cabins with further provision for a crew of four.

Builder : Sanlorenzo Length : 27.9m

This sporty model is the second in the Italian shipyard’s new smart performance (SP) line, following in the footsteps of the 33-metre SP110 which BOAT International visited last year . Initial renderings reveal a split-level saloon, floor-to-ceiling glazing and a spacious owner's suite arranged with a separate lounge and glass wardrobe. Accommodation is for up to eight guests and four crew, while other key numbers include 7.1-metre beam, a draught of 1.2 metres and a maximum speed of 40 knots.

Builder : Otam Length : 27.8m

As the flagship of the yard’s Fast and Iconic series, Sexy Me is said to have a "big-boat mentality" in spite of its compact footprint and loadline measuring under 24 metres. In close collaboration with Otam, Giuseppe Bagnardi of BG Design Firm is responsible for exterior styling, resulting in custom details including a helm console inspired by the world of F1 racing cars. The Otam 90 GTS series is fully customisable at the engineering level and Sexy Me is the semi-open version, devised to accommodate a large number of guests on board with a full-beam master suite, VIP cabin and guest cabin.
