Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Hull Length 16.40m/53.8’ Waterline beam 1.03 m Beam on centerline 6.92 m Deadweight (max.) 13.8 T Righting moment (min.) 35 T.m Righting moment (max.) 47 T.m Righting moment @ 1° 6 T.m

Alibi unveils fast sailing trimaran concept 116 OneOff

Thailand-based Alibi Catamarans has revealed details of its 35.35 metre trimaran sailing yacht concept, the Alibi 116 OneOff.

Alibi Yachts, led by former trimaran racer Loïc Goepfert, has used its experience from the world of racing trimarans to develop a fast and comfortable cruising trimaran concept, which has a top speed of 30 knots.

Alibi Catamarans has pitched the concept towards superyacht owners looking for a different way to travel. It said the “35 metre sailing multihull, with its renewable energy system, can travel almost for free. Crossing oceans in such a way unlocks new holiday destinations without thinking of delivery costs.”

Particular attention has been paid to the structural importance of the central hull, which takes most of the force, allowing the overall design to be lighter. Other important design elements include the 23 metre beam for stability and the three ultra slim hulls for speed.

The spacious living area provides accommodation for ten guests, as well as a central lounge and dining area. Two king-size cabins are located aft and two bunk-bed cabins forward.

On the lower deck a large master cabin has a brilliant view through large glass door in the transom. This door also provides access to the sea via a swim platform.

The separate crew accommodation, engine room and galley are all located forward of the master suite on the lower deck, meaning the crew can work without disturbing the guests.

Outside, OneOff has a lounge area forward of the glass-roofed saloon, a protected lounge in the main aft cockpit lounge and a separate raised helm station.

The engine room of the Alibi 116 features an efficient hybrid diesel, hydrokinetic generator to provide the necessary power. Smart electronics and sensors provide easier handling for the yacht to be sailed with a limited number of crew.

The yachting industry is seeing an increasing number of trimaran designs and builds, both sail and motor. Other sailing trimaran concepts include the UltraLuxum CXL160 and the 80 metre Dragonship from Pi Yachts .

Alibi Catamarans was a french yacht builder based in Thailand. At that time, this innovation-driven company astound the industry with first-rate product and design and was pursuing a exceptional sale experience.

Loic Goepfert, the owner and managing director, came to us with the need to create for him an interactive spec sheet online that allows customers to see all of the options and how it affects the overall cost. The options are complex, but we managed to don the web a clean and simple interface.

To emphasize the inattentiveness of the brand, the web design needed to provide a superior user experience to stand out from competitors. Studio Twist tailor-made an interactive animation that makes elements move when scrolled.

Sunreef Catamaran Design & Build Quality

Sunreef catamarans have launched more than 150 large sailing and power catamarans built in advanced composites. All of them are safely sailing the seas and over the many years Sunreef catamarans have provided a luxurious and comfortable environment for their owners.

Sunreef in-house naval architect team design hull shapes so that their catamarans can be seaworthy and comfortable. It is a complex process involving a large number of important decisions about shape, structure and materials. The purpose of the design process is to optimize the performance and reliability of the hull, taking into account the structure as a whole, and also to minimize the cost-price and weight reduction. In the design stage, the greatest challenge is to find the perfect balance between aerodynamics and hydrodynamics, combining all the elements into one single unit. The aerodynamic properties are crucial in determining how well the sails can extract energy from the wind. The hydrodynamic properties define how the hull can transfer this energy into speed.

Design, materials and processes are closely linked, and this is particularly clear in the development of Sunreef yachts models. With the necessary know-how, the builder can take into account specific hull performance requirements right from the beginning. The fact that Sunreef has this expertise also lets them benefit from the experience acquired in all the different phases of developing and producing a new hull design. Similarly, optimizing the production process can have an important influence on the overall design.

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.
