Review of Gambling 34

Basic specs..

The Gambling 34 is equipped with a finn keel. The finn keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel.

The keel is made of iron. Many people prefer lead keel in favour of iron. The main argument is that lead is much heavier than iron and a lead keel can therefore be made smaller which again result in less wet surface, i.e. less drag. In fact iron is quite heavy, just 30% less heavy than lead, so the advantage of a lead keel is often overstated. As the surface of a finn type keel is just a fraction of the total wet surface, the difference between an iron keel and a lead keel can in reality be ignored for cruising yachts.

Gambling 34 can only enter major marinas as the draft is about 1.86 - 1.96 meter (6.10 - 6.40 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

The boat is typically equipped with an inboard engine.

The transmission is a shaft drive. A shaft drive will in the long run require less maintenence than other types of drive e.g. a sail drive.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Gambling 34 is 1.80, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.6 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Gambling 34 is about 156 kg/cm, alternatively 877 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 156 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 877 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

What is SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio)?

What is Relative Speed Performance?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 28m 2 (301 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

Alcyone is a Gambling 34 designed by the legendary Norwegian designer Jan Herman Linge in 1970. She was built in 1973 by KMV in Norway, and launched in 1974 with an eye to racing under the name Skiff II. She won a few races in her time, then took to a more leisurely life of cruising including a trip to Svalbard to find some ice , and then we came along and bought her.

gambling 34 sailboat

The Gambling was Linge's take on the IOR 3/4 tonner class, but the design never enjoyed the global success of the Yngling and Soling designs. It is however a very solidly constructed boat, sails brilliantly on most points of sail and hasn't yet displayed the "broach coach" characteristics that some 3/4 tonners are renowned for. The engine is mounted midships under the mast which helps the sailing performance as for engine maintenance access...just don't ask about cooling water pumps.

We took over the Alcyone in October 2017 and proceeded to re-fit as we saw appropriate. Fortunately several previous owners lavished attention on her, and we had to undertake relatively little major work. New rigging, new anti-foul, new instruments, new hoses in various places...and so on. It still took 2 years to get her to a place we were happy to cross an ocean in her, but we eventually got there.

Sails wise we have opted to go for the low tech solution of hanked on head sails and a slab reef main. We had some issues with the roller furler when we first got the boat. One advantage of her racey past was a full set of hank on head sails so the choice was pretty easy to make! We also have 2 spinnakers, a storm jib and trysail and plans to get a cruising chute. John dreams of recreating this photo from the original sales brochure... watch this space.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

World’s coolest yachts: S&S 34

Yachting World

  • August 5, 2021

We ask top sailors and marine industry gurus to choose the coolest and most innovative yachts of our times. This month Don McIntyre nominates S&S 34

gambling 34 sailboat

The most innovative all-time classic is the S&S 34. As a class they appeared in 1967, a year before the first Golden Globe Race, and Ted Heath [then leader of the opposition and later UK Prime minister], won the 1969 Sydney Hobart in his Morning Cloud .

About 200 have been built since, including 130 in Australia where they are loved to this day. Only one has ever been lost at sea and they are renowned for their heavy weather performance.

In 2008, when deciding on a boat to support 15-year-old Jessica Watson’s dream to become the youngest ever, solo non-stop unassisted sailor, the choice was easy.

Jon Saunders in Perie Banou twice circumnavigated solo breaking 12 world records. David Dicks as a 17-year-old took the family S&S 34 Seaflight around solo nonstop, followed shortly after by Jesse Martin, also 17, solo and unassisted on Lionheart . Jessica on Pink Lady [then unofficially took] the record from him, and it still stands today!

Internet gambling revenue continues to soar in New Jersey. In-person revenue? Not so much.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — Internet gambling revenue continues to soar in New Jersey, where online casinos are accounting for a growing share of the betting pie: Atlantic City’s casinos and their online partners won $182 million in internet bets in February.

Figures released Friday by the state Division of Gaming Enforcement show that sports betting also did well in a month that included the Super Bowl.

Those two more recent forms of gambling helped the casinos, racetracks that accept sports bets and their online partners take in over $461 million in February, an increase of 12% from February 2023.

But the news was not all good: Atlantic City’s nine casinos won $211.5 million from in-person gamblers, down 1.6% from a year earlier.

While the casinos collectively exceeded the $196 million they won from in-person gamblers in February 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic hit, only three of the casinos individually won more in person this February than they did in February 2019.

“Remote gaming options continue to be critical for Atlantic City’s gaming operations, especially in the shoulder months when seasonal weather patterns are most likely to keep gamblers at home,” said Jane Bokunewicz. “Despite an extra day in the month, a wet and wintry February kept brick-and-mortar revenues for Atlantic City casinos modest.”

The casinos consider in-person gambling to be their core business. Money from internet gambling and sports betting must be shared with outside parties like sports books and technology platforms, and it is not solely for the casinos to keep.

With all three types of revenue combined, the Borgata won over $98 million, down 3.1% from a year earlier; Golden Nugget won $62.9 million, up over 31%; Hard Rock won $55 million, up 24%; Ocean won $37.6 million, up nearly 25%; and Tropicana won over $30 million, up 15%.

Bally’s won nearly $19 million, up nearly 5%; Harrah’s won $18.7 million, down 11%; Caesars won $16.2 million, down 15.5%; and Resorts won $12.1 million, down 4.3%.

In terms of in-person revenue, Borgata won $53.6 million, down 6.7%; Hard Rock won $41.1 million, up 9.6%; Ocean won over $31 million, up over 18%; Harrah’s won $18.2 million, down 14.7%; and Tropicana won $16.6 million, down 3.1%.

Caesars won $16.4 million, down 13.7%; Resorts won $12.2 million, down 3.6%; Golden Nugget won $11.6 million, up 4:, and Bally’s won $10.6 million, down over 13%.

In terms of internet-only entities, Resorts Digital, the casino’s online arm, won $72.2 million, up nearly 50%, and Caesars Interactive Entertainment NJ won $5.5 million, down nearly 33%.

Over $1 billion in total sports bets were made in New Jersey in February. Of that total, $67.5 million was kept as revenue by the casinos, tracks and their partners after paying out winning bets and other expenses.
