The Bay Breeze

catamaran ride martha's vineyard

Sailing on the Bay Breeze

The Bay Breeze is a 45’ Lock Crowther designed catamaran. At 23’ wide, the Bay Breeze is a very stable platform for sailing. Come out on a 2 hour public afternoon or sunset sail, or charter the boat privately with up to 25 of your closest friends and family. The Bay Breeze is a Coast Guard inspected and certified vessel. We sail out of Hyannis Inner Harbor into Lewis Bay and Nantucket Sound. The boat picks you up at 147 Lewis Bay Rd in Hyannis. You can google that address or “hospital boat ramp”. There are only 4 parking spaces there. If you want to try and get one, give yourself plenty of time to repark somewhere else in case they are taken.  If you park at 180 Ocean st, it’s an eight minute walk. You must use the pay at pay stations at Ocean st. It is usually always cooler on the water so please dress accordingly. You don’t need to print ticket. We will have your name in our reservation book.  You are welcome to bring a small cooler with drinks and snacks.

Martha’s Vineyard Cruise Port Guide

Martha’s Vineyard cruises are the perfect way to see the magnificent Massachusetts coast and one of the most historic ports in New England. This island, just south of Cape Cod, is one of the oldest settled and continually inhabited places in the United States and is steeped in rich colonial culture and quirky charm.

The long, sweeping sandy beaches in Martha’s Vineyard are straight out of an oil painting, with picturesque lighthouses dotted along the shores and grand mansions adorning the nearby streets. Take a trip around the island to see wildlife reserves, lush farmland, historic monuments and fishing villages backed by rolling sand dunes.  You’re never far from the sea here, with fishing boats, swish marinas and enticing seafood restaurants at every turn. Come for the beaches, but explore the island’s culture and cuisine at the same time.

Things to Do in Martha’s Vineyard

Tour the Edgartown Lighthouse

For centuries, lighthouses were the only way to guide ships away from the jagged cliffs and rocks of the New England coast. They still play an essential role today. The lighthouses on Martha’s Vineyard are also an historical reminder of human ingenuity, public safety, and cultural style.

The Edgartown Harbor Light is one of just five remaining lighthouses on the island. It is two stories tall, made of mostly wood, and has stood sturdy in its place since the 1820’s. You can get some incredible views from the top, and it’s a real treat to tour the inside to learn about its storied history and role in helping to keep ships and their crews safe.

Visit the Cape Poge Wildlife Refuge

Martha’s Vineyard cruises have lots to offer nature lovers, and the Cape Poge Wildlife Refuge is a must-see during your visit to the island. The refuge is located on nearby Chappaquiddick Island, an easy day trip. Here, a barrier beach with an expansive salt marsh and red cedar colony protects local flora and fauna and contributes to an immense biodiversity. Hike the Trustees Reservation for a unique perspective on the island, and walk with a licensed guide in search of plovers, terns and oystercatchers, all of which nest here.

Family Fun at The Iconic Flying Horses Carousel

Who doesn’t love a classic carousel? This timeless amusement ride may feel like a flashback to the past, but in Martha’s Vineyard the Flying Horses at Oak Bluffs is legendary. Built in 1876, this is the oldest operating platform carousel in the United States, and is categorized as an official historic national landmark.

Kids and adults of all ages will marvel at the intricate design, structure, and movements of the gleaming wooden horses. The music and themes are classic, and a ride on the carousel is a great way to transport yourself to another era before heading into town for ice cream and homemade fudge.

Top food and drink spots near the martha’s vineyard port.

Foodies will love cruises to Martha’s Vineyard, which for such a small island, packs an impressive culinary punch. At The Red Cat Kitchen, classic New England pub fare meets modern craft cocktails and hearty draft beers. Sample local seafood soups like the iconic clam chowder, or try baked crab served with corn risotto and cream.

For something more upscale, dine at L’Etoile Restaurant in Edgartown, where French cuisine featuring local seafood exceeds even the highest expectations. Try their Menemsha lobster with lemon-pepper pappardelle for a real treat, and end with an aged port wine before heading back to your ship.

Culture & History of Martha’s Vineyard Cruise Port

Martha’s Vineyard was originally inhabited by the Wampanoag tribe and later settled by the British in 1602. It was a key port to both the British and Americans over the last 400 years, serving as a protectorate of Boston, and an integral trading point for whaling and other goods. In recent history, Martha’s Vineyard has been best known as a summer vacation escape for America’s rich and famous, as well as a tight-knit community of year-round locals and seashore lovers. It’s friendly, fun, full of culture, and a great place to visit for adventure and escapism.

Martha’s Vineyard Port Facilities and Location

Martha’s Vineyard’s port facilities are modern and convenient. You can step off the ship and walk right into the pretty colonial town of Oak Bluffs, with plenty of shops and restaurants to explore.

Transportation in Martha’s Vineyard

Getting around Martha’s Vineyard is done mostly by car or tour bus, once outside the villages of Oak Bluffs or Edgartown. You can rent a car for the day if you’d like to do some serious exploring, or charter a tour van or taxi. In the villages, you can walk everywhere or rent a beach cruiser bicycle to get from place to place.

Shopping Near the Martha’s Vineyard Cruise Port

Martha’s Vineyard is all about boutique shopping and artisan crafts. You won’t find chain stores or malls here, which is part of the island’s charm. Right by the cruise port, you’ll find fantastic boutiques that specialize in maritime-themed art, wood carvings, furniture, and other artisan gifts. There are also a number of tempting chocolate and taffy shops nearby, as well as clothing stores that represent the seafaring culture of the island and its people.

Local Currency & Tipping Options

The local currency in Martha’s Vineyard is the US dollar, and ATMs are very easy to find at the port and in any of the island’s villages. Credit cards and debit cards are accepted pretty much everywhere, although you should also carry some cash as it’s preferred by some smaller merchants and food vendors. Tipping is expected for meals, tours, and drinks, and a standard 15-20% for good service is the norm.

Sail With Us

"life is either a daring adventure or nothing".

Helen Keller coined the phrase and we totally agree. At Sail The Vineyard, we take life on as a daring adventure and embrace all that means. We are a unique all-female crew, led by an adventurous, accomplished female captain who splits her time between Martha’s Vineyard and The Caribbean. Our captain is not only a US Coast Guard Master Mariner and Royal Yachting Association Yachtmaster, she is the only Certified instructor on Martha’s Vineyard, credentialed by the American Sailing Association. She takes great pride in mentoring sailors and particularly enjoys mentoring other female sailors.

The thrill of sailing aboard our sleek, fast classic sloop-rigged sailboat is the perfect adventure for your vacation to the Martha's Vineyard. Exploring the beauty & history of the Vineyard by sea is a special experience you won't forget.  The picturesque coastline of lighthouses, historic homes, and beautiful beaches are just a few of the beloved sights of the area. Embrace adventure yourself and feel the thrill of the wind in your hair, find your inner mermaid, and maybe learn the art and science of sailing.

"The Sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever"

Let us show you the magic of the sea on one of our sailing excursions. Breathe in the salt air and find your inner mermaid!  Enjoy snacks or a picnic lunch while under way, listen to the ocean as it swooshes by and feel the wonder of the vessel as the wind fills the sails and carries you away.

To some, it's just water. For us, it's a place to regain sanity

We all need a little help regaining sanity now and then.  The constant pull of technology - cell phones, email, social media - often prevent us from living in the moment.  Unplug with us.  Unwind for a few hours or an afternoon and regain your sanity.

For Your Safety

We are fully compliant with all current regulations for charter boats and carry a maximum of 6 guests per the U.S. Coast Guard Code of Federal Regulations, Subchapter C.

A LITTLE ABOUT THE CAPTAIN

Captain Angie Fisher is a native of Martha's Vineyard. She comes from a long bloodline of Fishermen. Her ancestors were whalers on Martha's Vineyard in the 1800s and her family has never left.  She has lived in Edgartown her entire life. Edgartown is and forever will be her home. Growing up as a fisherman's daughter she spent most of her childhood in or on the water in Katama Bay, Sengekontacket Pond,  Edgartown Great Pond, and Cape Poge.  Almost Everyday day in the summer her parents (Francis and Lori Fisher) would pack up the 1972 4x4 van and head to the beach. Grills, coolers, tables, horseshoes, Boogey boards, masks, and snorkels. Don't forget the quahog rakes and baskets!  Every day was a beach party to her, while her father was clamming and quahogging she would swim out and "help" her dad looking for little necks with her feet. It was the best childhood she could ask for. She is her father's daughter! And Angie felt at a young age she wanted to work on the water. She has been a commercial fisherman in Edgartown for 20+ years, she also helped out on her father's oyster farm in Katama Bay for 3 years. For over a decade she has dreamed about owning her own charter business, doing leisure cruises/excursions in Edgartown but as a mother of 2, she couldn't find the time or the resources. Now that her children are practically adults she found the time and accomplished getting her USCG masters (captains) license and dove in! She is the true definition of an island Nauti Girl!

Guest Post – Edgartown’s Floating Landmark

By rick conti.

Paris has the Eiffel Tower.

New York City has its Empire State Building.

San Francisco boasts the Golden Gate Bridge.

Every great city has a landmark that is visible from almost any vantage point within its limits.  Edgartown is no different.  In fact, Edgartown does them all one better.  While those other architectural wonders are impressive where they stand, the one that is the pride of Edgartown Harbor is mobile.

Mad Max boat sailing off Martha's Vineyard

It’s a massive, fluttering sheet of white suspended from a majestic mast and sporting the image of a surly buccaneer named “Mad Max”.  The sinister stare of this profligate privateer surveys the harbor whenever he’s not otherwise occupied cruising the coastline of the Vineyard.

Mad Max is the name of a catamaran that offers cruises to landlubbers like me whose oceanic exploits are normally limited to the ferry.  But it’s more than that.  It is actually a monument to the seafaring history of the city.

OK, maybe I’m overstating it.  I do that.  But it is definitely a site that has always represented Edgartown Harbor for me.  It peeks above the roofs and gables of the buildings that line the shore, beckoning to the sea everyone within reach of its siren call.

I resisted that call for longer than I care to admit.  I remember hosting friends who were visiting the island.  Ever the pseudo-local, I put on my best haughty manner as I showed them around, pointing out the scenery and places of interest.  As Mad Max loomed over us, with feigned superiority I described its features and told them how I’d always wanted to take it for a sail.  One of them called my bluff.  “Why not now?”  I had no answer.

We all spent the next couple of hours skimming over the waves along the northeast coast of the island.  What a ride!  We brought some wine and snacks (encouraged by the boat’s management) and took in a view of the coastline we’d never appreciated before.  Being one who is prone to mild queasiness on anything but the most placid water surface, I feared the worst on a relatively small boat.  No need to worry.  The twin-hulled construction makes the ride as smooth as gelato.

One of the craft’s exceptional features is the mesh surface that spans the two hulls on the front half of the boat.  We lounged on it as the water rushed just a couple of feet underneath us.  We were mermaids and mermen soaring above the surf.  (See how the imagination can run away with you on such a magical experience?)

As the sun set, we made our way back to the harbor, where Max could once more lodge leisurely in his niche, overlooking his enchanting empire.  The rest of us carried the memory of our excursion long after we had reacquired our land legs.

Try that on the Eiffel Tower.

  • Which ferry should I take to get to Martha's Vineyard? There are 5 ferries to get to Martha's Vineyard - depending on where you are traveling from and whether you are taking your car or not. Nantucket & Martha’s Vineyard High Speed & Car Ferry | The Steamship Authority - this is the most popular and the only ferry you can take your car on - although you WILL need a reservation - standby can take all day, (some days no standby), Thousands of people are traveling on this ferry - it is best to leave your car in the parking lot in Falmouth and walk on. PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT YOU CANNOT PARK IN WOODSHOLE WHERE THE FERRY IS.... they WILL tow you .... parking is located at two different spots - the closest is approx. 15 min away and they offer a free shuttle back and forth. For Martha's Vineyard Travelers While there is no dockside parking available at our Woods Hole terminal, there are several off-site lots in Falmouth. We encourage you to arrive an hour before your departure time, so you have the time you need to park your car and ride our free shuttle service to the terminal. Island Queen Ferry • Martha's Vineyard Ferry - Second most popular, especially for those staying closer to Falmouth and the parking lot is right next door... makes getting to and from the ferry much easier... About Martha’s Vineyard

Why is Martha's Vineyard a good sailing destination?

Martha’s Vineyard, an island jewel off the coast of Massachusetts, is a haven for sailing aficionados and maritime enthusiasts. This enchanting isle, awash with sandy beaches, tranquil coves, and quintessential New England charm, presents a sailing playground that beckons with a promise of adventure, serenity, and indelible memories. With Yachting.Rent as your partner, navigating these crystalline waters becomes an experience of unparalleled beauty, seamlessly blending the thrill of the sea with the allure of the island’s tapestry of wonders.

The waters surrounding Martha’s Vineyard offer a kaleidoscope of sailing experiences. The island’s diverse coastline guarantees something for every sailor, from the novice to the seasoned veteran. Venture north, and the Vineyard Sound provides a bustling maritime corridor, alive with yachts, fishing boats, and the iconic ferries. To the south, the Atlantic Ocean unveils its vast expanse, challenging and thrilling in equal measure, offering sailors a taste of open sea navigation. For those seeking a more tranquil experience, the numerous harbors and bays, such as Edgartown Harbor and Menemsha Pond, present perfect anchorage spots, where one can lay back and let the island’s rhythms dictate the pace.

Yet, Martha’s Vineyard isn’t just about the water; it’s about the land’s embrace once you set foot ashore. The island, steeped in history and culture, offers a treasure trove of experiences. From the gingerbread cottages of Oak Bluffs, the serenity of the Japanese Garden in Tisbury, to the historic charm of Edgartown, there’s a narrative waiting to be discovered at every corner. The island’s culinary scene is a delight for the senses, with seafood, especially the Martha’s Vineyard Bay scallops, being a must-try. The myriad art galleries, museums, and local events ensure that there’s always something happening, making the island as enticing on land as it is on water.

Choosing Martha’s Vineyard as your sailing destination with Yachting.Rent ensures not just a journey across water, but a dance with nature, history, and culture. As you unfurl the sails and chart your course, you’re not just navigating the seas but stepping into a story, an adventure that encapsulates the magic of New England. With its blend of maritime challenges and shoreside wonders, Martha’s Vineyard stands as a testament to the timeless allure of sailing, making it a quintessential destination for those looking to capture the essence of the sea and the soul of an island.

What Choose

Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Martha's Vineyard

Navigating the pristine waters of Martha’s Vineyard can be a transcendent experience, but choosing the right vessel can define your journey. At Yachting.Rent, we believe in helping our clients find the perfect fit, ensuring that their maritime adventures are nothing short of exceptional. As the azure waves of Massachusetts beckon, two prime choices emerge for avid sailors: the classic sailing boat and the contemporary catamaran. Both vessels have their distinct allure, and understanding their unique attributes can pave the way for a memorable voyage around this iconic island.

The sailing boat, a symbol of maritime tradition, offers a blend of romance and adventure. Its monohull design, with sails billowing against the horizon, is a sight to behold. Sailing boats ensure a direct connection to the sea, where every gust of wind and wave can be felt. This visceral feel of the water makes them a favorite among purists. Their narrower design allows for easier navigation through tighter spaces, making them ideal for exploring the many hidden coves and inlets of Martha’s Vineyard. On the flip side, their deep keels demand a sailor’s attention in shallow areas. However, for those who relish the challenge and the intimate connection with the ocean’s rhythms, sailing boats are unparalleled.

On the other hand, the catamaran stands as a testament to modern innovation in maritime design. With its twin hulls, the catamaran offers unmatched stability, making it a top choice for those who prioritize comfort and space. The wide deck and the trampoline area provide ample room for relaxation, sunbathing, or even a seaside picnic. Catamarans boast shallower drafts than their monohull counterparts, allowing them to venture closer to shore and anchor in shallow bays. Inside, they often feature spacious cabins and luxury amenities, ensuring that the journey is as delightful as the destination. Their stability and speed make them especially suitable for families or groups seeking a smooth and swift sailing experience.

In conclusion, the choice between a sailing boat and a catamaran often boils down to personal preference and the kind of experience one seeks. At Yachting.Rent, we pride ourselves on understanding our clients’ visions and helping them bring those dreams to life. Whether you’re chasing the thrill of traditional sailing around Martha’s Vineyard or seeking the luxurious comfort of a catamaran, our fleet is equipped to provide the perfect vessel for your escapade. As the sails unfurl against the Massachusetts sky and the horizon beckons, remember that with Yachting.Rent, every journey is a masterpiece waiting to unfold.
