The name “Wally Yachts” was based on “Wallygator,” a cartoon character that Luca Bassani’s son liked as a youngster, and was the name of the first family boat, built a few years prior. Family yacht “Wallygator” was the first sailing yacht to have a carbon mast and an innovative deck layout that garnered the attention of the sailing world and led to the design and production of Wally sailing yachts with the excellent features of “Wallygator.”

Like most entrepreneurial yacht designers and builders of that era, Luca Bassani, an avid yachtsman himself, initially built only sailboats, until 2001 when he expanded into the powerboat segment with the first Wallytender 45 as a chase boat for the sailing yachts and then for the famed 118ft Wallypower after her launch in 2003 and debut in 2004. The 47ft Wallytender was built in 2005, one of which Bassani still owns today. Wally sailing yachts ranged from the 37ft Wallynano daysailer to the 166ft superyacht, “Better Place,” a carbon fiber sloop with flybridge. Wally Yachts was a pioneer of using carbon fiber in yacht construction. Besides the use of carbon fiber material for its benefits of lightweight, rigid strength and aesthetics, Wally Yachts innovations included push-button sailing in 1995, ‘Terrace on the Sea’ beach club and inside/outside living pioneered in 1998, the first canting keel in a big cruiser, and Magic Trim for sail handling along with other sail handling features, allowing single handling of sailing yachts.

The 1998 Wally 88 “Tiketitan” sailing yacht introduced the Magic Trim system that was developed by Gianni Cariboni (Cariboni Srl) with Wally, as an advanced hydraulic ram system to trim sails instead of winches using push-button controls; a few years later joystick integration was added. With the launch of Wally B in 1998, yacht interiors featured the “flexibility concept” of Wally Yachts collaboration with noted Italian design firm, Lazzarini Pickering Architetti, and the establishment of the Wally Class in 1999, allowing competitive owners to hold regattas of racing superyachts. Several of these cutting-edge yachts won prestigious design awards.

By far the most notable Wally motor yacht is the award-winning Wallypower 118, sometimes mistaken for a military stealth vessel for its radical futuristic design, technology, and speed, always turning heads in awestruck wonder. Launched in 2003, this amazing luxury, high performance superyacht was designed by Lazzarini Pickering Architetti in collaboration with Wally Yachts—both exterior and interior. Naval architecture was by Wally and Intermarine-Italy at that time a subsidiary of builder, Rodriquez Yachts. Rodriquez Cantieri Navali S.p.A. was merged by incorporation into its former subsidiary, Intermarine S.p.A. from December 31st, 2012. Both are known worldwide for the construction of commercial and military highspeed vessels, such as minesweepers, patrol boats, hydrofoils, and fast ferries (monohulls and catamarans) utilizing a variety of materials and technologies, and gas turbine engines with waterjets and diesels.

Luca Bassani has described Wallypower 118’s motion not so much in terms of actual speed (she is rated at maximum 60 knots), but the impact of the boat’s stunning shape and silence as she whizzes by. The metallic sage green (Wallygator) color changes in sunlight and reflects her environment—a golden sunlit coast, turquoise seas, gray rocks—like a chameleon. And there’s the angular black glass and carbon-framed superstructure adding to the mystique along with the knife blade thin, almost vertical bow and high deep chines that slice through waves and soften her ride, along with the use of interceptors for bow height control. Her quiet running is due to the triple Vericor TF50 gas turbines that each put out a whopping 5,600 bhp, with each driving a Rolls Royce KaMeWa Waterjet. 3

70 bhp diesel engines power the yacht out of harbors at a low 9kn speed and aid the two movable jets that steer the vast craft. Once in open water, the turbines take over. Exterior lines and open decks were kept pure and minimal, while providing the amenities and function of a cruising yacht; the 118 Wallypower was one of the first pleasure yachts in the world to have folding bulwarks. The interior living spaces have been likened to a sophisticated New York City loft; exquisitely simple, clean design with luxurious comfort. Even the navigational console is non-traditional, like an aircraft’s flight deck.

The 118 Wallypower is an incomparable technical and design masterpiece influencing marine design with its award-winning avant garde style, design concepts, and technical innovations, including the new 165 Wallypower designed by famed custom superyacht designer, Espen Oeino in collaboration with Luca Bassani, keeping distinctive Wally style and design features. The 118’s folding bulwarks are a standard feature of the new 58 Wallypower that increase the aft deck’s open outdoor space enhancing the indoor/outdoor, close to the water lifestyle concept.

The current Wally Fleet of power boats include the Wallytender 43 & 43X (X=outboard propulsion), Wallytender 48 & 48X—versatile, seaworthy dayboats with a more comfortable cockpit and Seakeeper for roll stability. The stylish walkaround center cockpit features carbon fiber sailcloth hardtop that can be installed with optional solar panels for battery power. Designed with a comfortable cabin for overnighting and balanced, and deep-V hull for speedy performance and maneuverability.

The Wallypower 50 & 50X are current projects. The Wallypower 58 & 58X were introduced in 2022 and 2023 respectively. The Wallypower 165 was revealed in 2019 and is in development, as the first project with Ferretti Group, who purchased Wally Yachts in 2019.

Another new project is the Wallywhy 100. The Wallywhy 200 launched in 2020, was the start of this new series, that includes a recently launched Wallywhy 150, and is described as a cross-over of semi-displacement, semi-flybridge, semi-explorer with a semi-loft interior. The models’ W is for wally and HY for hybrid, and the 200 refers to its 200GT volume. And volume is the concept of this yacht with a 23ft beam to its 89ft length, along with the excellent seakeeping of the Wally and Ferretti engineered hull. Joystick system and high-end Volvo Penta technologies make the Wallywhy Series easy to navigate whether crew or owner operated.

The Wally Fleet of sailboats include the Wallywind 110, 130, and 150 (projects). The Wallynano 37, a modern daysailer was updated in 2016 with a magnificent retro look designed by Dutch master Andre Hoek in collaboration with Luca Bassani, that combines timeless classic lines with the Dutch yard Doomernik’s advanced construction technology, design techniques, and sailing features. The minimalist teak interior finish is superb.

And Wallyrocket 52 is another new project.

About four dozen Wally Yachts are currently available on the brokerage market, with around three dozen power boats and one dozen sailing yachts. Power boats range from model years 2005 to 2023 and consist of Wallytender and Wallypower yachts, priced from under $350K to $3.2million. The Wally sailing yachts range from the Nano 37 daysailer to a Pendennis 106 and range from model years 1998 to 2009. Pricing ranges from under $300K to over $4.6million.

First look: Wally 101 – new 101ft yacht due in 2023

The luxury yacht manufacturer is due to launch a new boat in 2023, the new Wally 101 inspired by the well-respected Wallycento design rule

Wally has sold its first new sailing yacht since the buy-out by Ferretti in 2019 – a 101-footer inspired by the Wallycento box-rule design, called the Wally 101.

The fully custom carbon racer displaces just 56.4 tonnes, much of which lies in the keel. It will bristle with technology, including double low- and high-pressure hydraulic systems for faster sail handling, a lifting keel and retractable prop. This last is estimated to reduce drag by 5%, giving a 10-second edge for each mile sailed.

For all that, the Wally 101 is also described as a family-friendly boat, which retains Wally’s original ethos. A Magic Trim system allows the boat to be sailed with a minimal crew, and she offers comfortable dining in the cockpit, or sunbathing aft.

Founder Luca Bassani describes the yacht as “flying the flag for the planet”. The claim rests on the Judel/Vrolijk-designed hull being very easily driven, making 18-20 knots in cruising mode, but exceeding wind speed even in light airs. Delivery is scheduled for spring 2023.

Wally shifted the dial on yacht design with the wallywhy200. Innovative in so many ways, its bold aesthetic is only matched by the incredible range of features that can be offered by its 200-gross tonne volume. With its full-wide body, the signature of this futuristic space ship is the vast owner’s suite in the bow, which seems to hang over the water below. Wally has expertly engineered a strip of tall glass running all the way round the main deck, providing the cabin with a 270-degree panoramic views and astonishing natural light. And yet, this high 4.7m bow is part of a hull form has been studied in minute detail to provide stability, eliminate slamming and still deliver semi-displacement performance. Renowned designer Laurent Giles developed the naval architecture specifically for this yacht, which was exhaustively tank-tested in Southampton. Combined with the Volvo IPS pod propulsion system, the wallywhy200 can cruise at 20 knots and hit 23 knots flat out with the optional enhanced power package. The design is breathtaking, with elegant teak decking and steps that cascade down to the beach club aft, which extends with wings at the side and a hydraulic bathing platform that doubles as a passerelle. A 4.15m tender and other toys are garaged invisibly behind the wings. An enormous upper deck is presided over by Wally’s signature glass and carbon dome. And on the lower deck, there are a luxurious VIP suite and two dazzling guest cabins. An eye-catching carbon fibre staircase connects all the decks – laminated in a single piece to give structural support and eliminate bulkheads. This creates open entertaining spaces that blend seamlessly into the exterior.

In fact, Wally says the 58X is the first fleet member to be fitted with the new 600 hp Mercury V-12 Verado—it has four of them actually, which collectively produce 2,400 hp. The yacht also sports a deep V-hull to help it slice through waves quickly and efficiently. As a result, fuel consumption remains relatively low, according to the yard. The tankage gives it a range of about 320 nautical miles.

“Wally stands for avant-garde, so it should come as no surprise that we have found a way to unite the very latest in outboard performance with the essential access to the water that the wallypower line provides,” Wally’s managing director Stefano de Vivo said in a statement. “Exhilarating speed from 2,400 hp of motors, peerless handling and a true spirit of enjoying what nature has to offer—these are all hallmarks of Wally yachts .”

The new Mercurys have other benefits beyond sheer grunt, too. The outboards have a reduced draft compared to other models, so traversing shallow waters is no problem. The rotating gearcases and joystick maneuvering system, meanwhile, enable precise docking in tight spaces.

Another highlight is the “magic porthole.” Essentially, Wally decided to eschew windows on the hull in favor of video cameras on either side of the exterior. The yard says this setup requires less maintenance and ensures more privacy.

Wally Launches the wallypower50

Wally recently debuted its wallypower50, expanding upon the builder’s series-launching wallypower58 and wallypower58x models. According to yacht builder, the wallypower50 blends the open design elements of its wallytender line as well as the extra space found on the wallytender58 yachts.

High-performing vessels are a Wally trademark, and to that end the wallypower50 is powered with twin 480 hp Volvo Penta IPS650 diesels. Wally reports this propulsion setup gives the yacht a 36-knot top-end speed and a 30-knot cruise speed. Like the outboard-powered wallypower58x, there is a wallypower50x model and it’s offered with either quad 400 hp Mercury outboards or quad 500 hp outboards. With the 400s, the builder says top hop is around 48 knots and it’s 50-plus knots with the 500s. The wallypower50’s deep-V hull form and plumb-bow should effectively dice and slice the chop.

Wallys are also known for maximizing onboard livability. With the wallypower50, there are two cockpit sun pads flanking a walkway on centerline. Foldout terraces expand the cockpit’s real estate by about 65 square feet. The cockpit is teak, making it comfortable for bare feet on warm days. Additionally, there is a retractable stairway in the swim platform for seamless water access. More sunning space is at the foredeck with an additional sun pad that has adjustable headrests.

Under the wallypower50’s hardtop, an L-shaped seating arrangement and dining table is to port creating the scene for alfresco meals. There is a bench seat to starboard. Total seating accommodations are for about eight guests. A helm station is forward and to port, and is equipped with two helm seats.

Belowdecks, there is a double berth in the forepeak as well as a full head with a shower for cruisers looking to spend a weekend, or longer, on the water. There is a galley for simple meal prep and a settee for lounging.
