The beginning of Burin dates back to 1989 when the family of Vida and Martin Hawlina decided to set up their own company. In the spring of 1991, they opened the Fitness Centre Burin in Rojčeva Ulica in Ljubljana. At the time it was one of the first fitness centres in Slovenia. Besides the sauna, massages and the sunbed studio, the family also opened the exchange office and a travel agency in the same building. The agency specialized in the nautical tourism and summer holidays on the east Adriatic coast. The holiday destinations in Northern Dalmatia and on the islands of the Zadar Archipelago soon became Burin's trademark as it was the only agency in Slovenia to offer these particular destinations.

In 1995 Burin was already becoming a leading Slovenian agency which offered gullet cruises along the Croatian coast. Following the nautical trend, Burin published its first catalogue BOAT CHARTER, which helps agencies with all kinds of sailing boat and motor boat charters. Today the catalogue is one of the most popular Slovenian summer catalogues in the field of nautical tourism.

In 2000 Burin, as the leading Slovenian agent for boat charter, expanded and became the sales representative for the renowned French sailing boats Feeling as well as the Spanish motor boats Starfisher. In 2001 Burin became an active broker in the used boats dealership. The professionally worked-out plan placed Burin among the leading dealers of used boats. That same year Burin organized the first season of sailing school.

In 2002 Burin established the club - Burin Yachting Club, which in a very short period of one year became the biggest nautical family in Slovenia with 600 members. At the same time the club took an active part in organizing popular regattas and nautical events in Slovenia and Croatia.

In 2003 Burin expanded their business to the Croatian market and opened their own base for charter boats in marina 'Kornati' in Biograd na Moru. Today Burin manages a large number of charter boats in the range between 7-16 m. We should especially mention the monotype fleet of 10 identical sailing boats Elan 340 (the European Boat of 2007), which offer an exceptional feeling and comfort.

In 2005 g. Martin retired, which led to the closing of the fitness centre and the exchange office. The company, under the management of brothers Hawlina, moved to another location in the vicinity and changed the name to Burin YC.

That same year Burin YC became the sales representative for Elan sailing boats on the Slovenian market and expanded their sales quota. Burin also helped the client to open the first official charter company in Kotor, Montenegro. The professionally worked-out project showed extraordinary results in the sales by the second season of the cooperation between Elan and the base.

In 2006 Burin YC became the representative for the most prestigious brand of catamarans in serial production, French Privilege. The representation covers the area of former Yugoslavia (Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro).

In 2007 Burin YC became the representative for other top quality European producers of nautical equipment (Selden, Polyropes, Baltic) and at the same time made plans to expand and actively participate in the distribution of the equipment.

In 2012 the base in Biograd na Moru already has a fleet of 10 brand new monotype sailing boats Elan 350 One Design, which are undoubtedly the best in their category.

Our guests and clients come from all over the world, 30% of which are Slovenian guests.

Today the company is run by Hawlina brothers – David, Dane and Andrej, which is also demonstrated by the company's logo (three sailors). With the help of our professional staff, we can offer a dynamic style and a unique and rich range of services. Our famous motto is 'Place your trust in a fair wind'. Namely, burin is also the name of an Adriatic wind, which blows in the evening from northeast. In the past it would help sailors to bring their boats safely after many solitary night out on the sea.

Baltic appoints new distributor

Baltic Safety Products, a Swedish manufacturer of lifejackets and buoyancy aids, has chosen Burin Yachting Club (YC) to serve as its new distributor in Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro. The region covers some 6,000km of coastline and is a popular sailing destination, says Baltic.

Burin YC, which is based in Ljubljana, Slovenia, is an official distributor for Elan sailing yachts, Feeling sailing yachts and Privilege catamarans. The company also distributes several nautical products.

"We are pleased to be pushing forward into new market areas, and with our new warehouse facility in Sweden we are better able to support our distributor network," says Baltic founder Per Frode.

Baltic, which is headquartered in lgars, Sweden, claims to be the largest manufacturer of lifejackets in Europe. The company was founded in 1977 and is now represented in more than 50 countries worldwide.

Yacht race to Havana resumes after 58 years, complete with Cuban crew

ST. PETERSBURG

There is a race within the race that marks the return this week of the St. Petersburg-Habana regatta.

It will determine who makes history by becoming the first Cuban-born captain in more than five decades to lead a boat from the United States to the island nation.

"We all want to be the first with a Cuban leader to finish," said Anthony Scaglione, 32, a Tampa native who serves on the crew of the 37-foot cruising yacht LaVie . "Hopefully, it is us."

The LaVie is captained by Martin Saavedra, 68, of Tampa, a native of Cuba who came to the United States at 12.

At least two other yachts are captained by Cuban natives — one living in Toronto and the other a Cuban citizen.

For this regatta and for the first time since the Cuban Revolution, the Cuban government is allowing a yacht from the island to participate in a U.S. sailing competition.

And a longtime Cuban law banning Cuban-born people from returning to the island by sea was recently loosened to accommodate U.S.-based commercial cruises to the island with passengers who include Cuban-born Americans.

"We are very excited," said Mario Perez, 55, the Cuban-born captain of the 40-foot cruising yacht The Tiger , who has lived in Toronto since 1992. "We can't believe we finally can do this."

The crew of the boat from Cuba, the Micara , didn't receive permission from its government to participate until Monday morning so it was not able to make it to St. Petersburg in time for the start of the race at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

They planned to join the regatta in Key West.

This means the Micara is not part of the official race, but it doesn't stop the boat from competing for bragging rights against The Tiger and LaVie.

The St. Petersburg-Habana Yacht Race ran from 1930 through 1959. It was canceled in 1960 with the deterioration of United States-Cuban relations.

Inspired by the move by President Barack Obama to reach out to Cuba, the St. Petersburg Yacht Club revived the race after a hiatus of 58 years.

It has returned bigger than ever.

At its peak, the original regatta had more than 30 competitors. This year's drew 81 yachts, 75 of them in the competition.

"It is amazing how much good can be accomplished when people work together," said Albert A. Fox Jr., founder of Tampa's Alliance for Responsible Cuba Policy Foundation, who for a year worked as a liaison between the St. Petersburg Yacht Club and the Cuban government.

The size of the competing boats is 30 to 120 feet, said Richard Winning, commodore of the St. Petersburg Yacht Club. There will be an overall champion plus trophies presented to the first to finish in each class: spinnaker, non-spinnaker, multi-hull and cruising.

Some crews number as many as a dozen. Others are as small as three.

All but six boats have home ports in Florida, but the crews are made up of an estimated 550 sailors from all over the world — Canada, England, France, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands and South Africa among them.

"To be part of the revival of this race is pretty cool," said England's Henry Bomby, 26, who is part of the crew for the Fomo , a 40-foot spinnaker captained by St. Petersburg's Lloyd Thornburg. "I'm excited to be a part of history."

Seeing the island that was long difficult to visit for Americans was a primary reason others are participating in the regatta.

"This is a great opportunity to visit a nation I've never seen," said Tampa's Art Cupps, 50, captain of the 44-foot cruising yacht First Wind .

The yachts should all reach the finish at Marina Hemingway by Thursday.

Then on Saturday, most will take part in a 15-mile race to the historic Morro Castle that will include more Cuban boats.

St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman is leading a delegation flying to Havana to watch the second race and enjoy other regatta-related festivities.

Vicente Amor of Tampa travel agency Asc International booked airline tickets for 88 locals plus 136 rooms for them and sailors.

"Cubans from outside Cuba are reuniting with Cuba," said Commodore José Miguel Díaz Escrich of Marina Hemingway in Havana. "All the participants are part of an expression of love between the two countries."
