Located in the heart of Hamburg, Blohm + Voss’ build portfolio includes merchant vessels, offshore units, passenger ships and luxury superyachts. The yard has been in almost continuous operation for over 140 years.

The shipyard’s facility encompasses over 421,000 square-meters with a famous historic dockside, enviable manufacturing plant and dedicated development and construction centers.

In 2016, Blohm + Voss was acquired from Star Capital Partners by Lürssen. Lürssen’s acquisition of Blohm + Voss was one of the biggest superyacht industry mergers in history. The united power of Lürssen and Blohm + Voss is monumental, with a combined workforce totalling 2,800 employees and nine shipyards, not to mention six of the world’s 10 largest yachts in their collective fleet.

History of Blohm + Voss Yachts

Blohm + Voss have over 135 years of experience under their belts, and this German shipyard has been an integral part of modern maritime history.

In the 1930s, the owners of Blohm + Voss also established the Hamburger Flugzeugbau aircraft manufacturer which, shortly before the outbreak of World War II, adopted the name of its parent company.

Outside of their impressive superyacht fleet, Blohm + Voss are most well known for their construction of the Bismarck, a famous World War II battleship which was sunk in 1941.

Following a difficult period after the war, Blohm + Voss revived its fortunes by becoming a public company under a change of ownership.

In 2005, Blohm + Voss was acquired by German industrial giant ThyssenKrupp AG. In 2012, ThyssenKrupp sold the shipyard’s civilian operations to London-based private equity firm Star Capital. Under Star Capital, Blohm + Voss’ focus was on building custom superyachts and they did so with great success.

The last superyacht to leave the Blohm + Voss shipyard, before they became part of the German superyacht-building giants, Lürssen, in 2016, was the 269-foot (82m) GRACEFUL. GRACEFUL was designed by H2 Yacht Design and her hull construction was actually commenced in Russia before she was towed to Blohm + Voss in Hamburg for completion.

Not only has the Blohm + Voss shipyard been ahead of the curve, it has shaped its own.

Under the Blohm + Voss brand, nine superyachts were built and Northrop & Johnson are well versed in all of the superyachts in the Blohm + Voss stable. The impressive vessels built by Blohm + Voss are all well-known names on the who’s who list of iconic superyachts.

Most notable amongst Blohm + Voss’ more recent builds are the 2010-launched 533-foot (162.5m) ECLIPSE (designed by Terence Disdale), the 2008-launched 390-foot (119m) motor yacht A (designed by Philippe Starck) and, launched in the same year, 305-foot (93m) MAYAN QUEEN IV.

It took over five years to design and build ECLIPSE. The 533-foot (162.5m) megayacht was the largest yacht in the world at the time of her launch in 2010. The yacht features a private owner’s deck, which itself measures a staggering 184-foot (56m) in length, an impressive 53-foot (16m) swimming pool which converts to a dance floor, and boasts stowage for three helicopters.

Motor Yacht A is another Blohm + Voss superyacht to have enjoyed international acclaim, owed in part to her unconventional and distinctly recognizable exterior profile. Even now, over 12 years since her launch, Motor Yacht A remains one of the greatest head-turners afloat.

German builder Blohm+Voss has launched some incredible custom yachts over the years. While the word unique is often a misnomer in yachting, the best Blohm+Voss superyachts are truly worthy of the term. With unusual exterior design, bold windows and completely unconventional lines, these yachts stand out while standing the test of time.

Case in point, the completely one of a kind superyacht A  built for Russian yacht owner Andrey Melnichenko. Designed inside and out by Philippe Starck with naval architecture by Martin Francis , the 119 metre motor yacht A redefined preconceived notions of what a yacht could look like when she emerged in 2008. Though considered a bit of an oddity at the time, she has since gone on to serve as the golden example of what truly unique yacht design can be and is one of the most easily recognisable yachts in the world. Very few yachts have garnered as much attention since then until A 's sistership, the boundary pushing Sailing Yacht A .

The best Blohm+Voss yacht that redefined window design is Eco , re-named Katana and now  Enigma ,_ _the 75 metre motor yacht launched in 1991. With exterior design by Martin Francis, Eco was groundbreaking for her superstructure design that was covered by three tiers of convex curved windows. Built for a Mexican yacht owner, the superyacht was also notable for her speed, ramping up to 35 knots. She's enjoyed two refits, in 1994 and again in 2004, she's been kept in good condition and offers accommodation for 28 guests. Her interior was a collaboration between Martin Francis, Francois Zuretti and Laura Seccombe.

Another window-filled best Blohm+Voss yacht came in the form of the 104.85 metre steel and aluminium Lady Moura. The massive, full-displacement superyacht was the ninth largest yacht in the world when she was launched in 1990. It's not just her LOA that's seizable as the five-deck yacht has a huge interior volume with a gross tonnage of 6,539. With exterior design by Paolo Scanu, her imposing white superstructure is broken up by the swath of windows running the length of each deck.

One of the best Blohm+Voss yachts was also the first, the 136 metre Savarona . Notably, she's also the only sailing yacht on this list. Launched in 1931, the beautiful classic sailing yacht was originally built for an American heiress. Savarona found herself in hot water later in life, landing herself on the list of the biggest scandals at sea , after it was revealed she had been used in a prostitution ring. The Blohm+Voss sailing superyacht was recently returned to her former glory and good standing, being used for first time as Turkish state yacht since the prostitution scandal .

Known as Project Orca during her build, Palladium is one of the best Blohm+Voss in recent years that stands out for her offbeat superstructure styling. There are no hard lines, but soft curves that lead the eye in a gentle flow from water level to the sun deck and bow to stern. It's a masterpiece of design by Michael Leach 's design studio, who has also penned the unusual interiors, which as can be imagined benefit hugely from the large windows. Palladium was the big winner during the ShowBoats Design Awards 2011, winning a bevy of awards for  Interior Design, Exterior Design & Styling, Tender Design, and Bespoke Furniture Item.

The German yacht builder, Blohm + Voss, will soon celebrate its 140 years of maritime history. Blohm + Voss yachts are noble bearers of the “made in Germany” label, delivered from the heart of the port of Hamburg. Nearly 1,000 vessels, ranging from 262feet / 80meters to the mammoth length of 535feet / 163meters have been delivered over its 139year history. Blohm + Voss is known for having created some of the most unusual and daring superyacht designs on the waters. Today, Blohm + Voss not only undertakes full custom yacht projects but also has Design Concepts underway and the new semi-custom BV80 line. The Design concepts include the motor yachts Dauphin 328feet / 100meters, Jazz 306feet / 93.25meters, Nube 377feet / 115meters and Zeena 452feet / 138meters. Blohm + Voss partnered with the award-winning ‘next-generation’ team at Eidsgaard Design for the BV80 project. This project is a 262foot / 80meter semi-custom yacht where the design is flexible, the delivery is fast and the quality is fixed.

In 1877, Hermann Blohm joined forces with engineer Ernst Voss to create a small shipyard in Hamburg. Gradually their business expanded to become the largest single shipyard site in Europe, building the world’s largest passenger ships. In 1930 they launched the steamship Europa which won the Blue Riband for the fastest transatlantic passage. In 1931, the 440foot / 134meter Savarona was launched as the world’s largest pleasure yacht of its time. During the world wars, the shipyard was pressed into service and began to design and build aircraft for the German state airline. Following the Armistice, they focused on merchant shipping lines and the world’s navies. In the late 1980’s, and under the umbrella of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, Blohm + Voss embarked once again in the construction of superyachts with first off the 213foot / 65meter Katalina. She was the forerunner of a succession of luxuriously appointed yachts, each one designed to be markedly different from her predecessor. In 2012, the Blohm + Voss shipyard and repair business was acquired by Star Capital Partners, a London based investment fund manager. Maintaining the company’s heritage, Ernst von Freyberg, Hermann Blohm’s great-grandson, is Chairman of the Blohm + Voss Group and a significant shareholder. Star Capital Partners’ new investment and development work focused on the superyacht sector and strengthened the company’s position as the world’s pre-eminent builder and service provider of custom yachts over 262feet / 80meters.

At the massive Hamburg facilities (an area of approx. 421,300 m²), Blohm + Voss sets a clear course within its area of expertise in building, repairs and refits of Merchant vessels, Offshore units, Passenger ships and Superyachts. The company has recently announced the set-up of a new maintenance and refit facility for megayachts over 262feet / 80meters, in La Ciotat, in the South of France. Blohm + Voss has four business divisions:

Blohm + Voss Industries (“BVI”) produces ship components such as seals used in propulsion systems and stabilizers. Approximately 30% of the global ship fleet is equipped with BVI components. Blohm + Voss Shipyards (“BVS”) designs and builds high-end bespoke mega yachts. Blohm + Voss Repair (“BVR”) is a ship repair and conversion business, focused on complex, time-critical projects such as cruise liner extensions, refits for the offshore industry and mega yacht refurbishments. Blohm + Voss Oil Tools (“BVOT”) provides pipe-handling equipment such as elevators and automated floor-hands to the oil and gas exploration industry.

Blohm + Voss has an extended portfolio of notable yachts, including: The 269foot / 82meter Graceful, built in 2014 and designed by H2 Yacht Design of London. Her hull was built in Russia, but due to her unique complex design and equipment for voyages to predominantly cooler climates, the project was passed on to and completed by Blohm + Voss. Currently the second largest superyacht in the world, the impressive 532foot / 162,5m Eclipse was delivered by Blohm + Voss in 2010. She boasts a striking exterior design by the French architect Hermidas Atabeyki, characterized by various novel ideas such as the arrangement of a generous open loggia, balconies for the guest suites, a futuristic inside submarine hangar, as well as a helicopter hangar. In 2010, the major award winner Palladium (315feet / 96meters) was commented by Boat International Magazine “Palladium does not represent an evolution in yacht design; she is a new species entirely”. In 2008, the 390foot / 119meter motor yacht A was an outcome of the partnership of arguably the world’s most famous and prolific designer, Philippe Starck, together with the technical expertise of yacht designer Martin Francis and the engineers at Blohm + Voss. She boasted Starck’s ‘inversed hull’ concept and life rafts hidden away within the ship’s bulwarks. Undeniably, the Mayan Queen IV (305feet / 93meters) built in 2008, took engineering aesthetics to a higher level. Tim Heywood’s exterior design and Terence Disdale’s interiors introduced a series of innovative features including a tender garage with doors that seamlessly merge into the hull; glass sliding doors that disappear to create an unencumbered route between deck and saloon; a suite window which effortlessly turns into a fully formed balcony and closed partitions that smoothly turn into stairs. The 246foot / 75meter Eco, built in 1991, achieved the record-breaking top speed of 38 knots.
