When it comes to Kos yacht charter holiday, it refers to the island, the town and the biggest port in all of Greece. This is the main reason why you should launch your journey to the exciting destinations in the Sporades Archipelago with a visit to the Island of Kos. Kos is the largest town in the Island and easily the most important yacht charter destination in the region.

The Island of Kos has a mountainous terrain and features several high peaks. The lowland landscape of the island is defined by fertile flat lands and the highlands are generally not arable. The town is an elegant mix of old structures and archeological landmarks and modern trimmings.

Within the town as well as along its suburbs, sailors and yacht charter enthusiasts will get a glimpse of the rich and storied history of the old Kos. Surviving remnants of ancient civilizations indicate strong Greek, Italian and Turkish influence. Other important attractions in the town of Kos are its famed narrow alleyways as well as several restaurants and other food venues, cafes and local boutiques. Tourists and Greece yacht charter enthusiasts must also visit exotic villages within the island such as Marmari, Tigaki, Zipari and Asfendiou. Of course, you should visit the village of Zia to get a perfect glimpse of captivating Greek sunset.

Important Places and Popular Attractions

The must-see attractions and places in Kos include the St. Stephen’s Christian Basilica complex, the Asklepion, St. John the Baptist Church, the famed Hippocrates Tree and the fascinating Neratzia Castle. There are other interesting places and important landmarks to visit in the Island of Kos, and it will surely be a perfect place to start your journey to the important and significant attractions in the region.

Local authorities of Kos have established a train system to allow tourists and yacht charter enthusiasts to cover in less than an hour all the important and significant attractions and places within Kos. The train system starts from the harbour and takes the best routes along the important sections of the town.

If you really want to experience an authentic Greek yacht charter holiday, then you must include in your itinerary the Island of Kos.

Kos Yacht Charter

Kos is the second largest after Rhodes and second most visited Dodecanese island in Greece. The harbour is guarded by an imposing castle of the Knights of St John, the streets are lined with Italian built public buildings, and minarets and palm trees punctuate extensive Hellenistic and Roman remains. Kos is the most fertile of the archipelago, blessed with rich soil and abudunt ground water lacking of the wild beauty of Rhodes.

Except in Kos Town and Mastihari, there are few independent travellers, and from mid-July to mid-September the island is overcrowded. The tourist industry is juxtaposed rather bizarrely with cows munching amid baled hay near olive groves, and Greek Army tanks exercising in the volcanic badlands around the airport.

Like Tilos further south, Kos never had to earn its living from the sea and consequently has little in the way of a maritime tradition or a contemporary fishing fleet. All these peculiarities acknowledged, Kos is still worth a few days’ time while island-hopping: its few mountain villages are appealing, the tourist infrastructure excellent and swimming opportunities limitless – about half the island’s perimeter is fringed by beaches of various sizes, colors and consistencies.

Almost three quarters of the island’s working people are directly engaged in tourism, and the scale of demand tells you something about Kos’s beauty and attractions, Kos has been inhabited for roughly 10,000 years, and has for a significant portion of that time been both an important center of commerce and a line of defense. Its population in ancient times may have reached 100,000, but today it is less than a third of that number. Across the millennia, the unchallenged favorite son of the island has been Hippocrates, the father of Western medicine, who has left his mark not only on Kos but also on the world. The principal attractions of Kos are its antiquities, most notably the Asklepion and its beaches where at summer are very swamped.

Kos is part of the Dodecanese island chain in the southeastern Aegean Sea, off the Anatolian coast of Turkey. The specific geographical coordinates are 36°53’12.1″N 27°16’55.6″E.

Yacht or catamaran charter in Kos

Sailing from Kos

Kos is an outstanding place to sail - it has glorious sunshine and good, reliably strong winds, together with the beautiful Dodecanese islands to explore - with it's cute fishing villages, secluded beaches, cliffs and caves, and picturesque sunsets. Large chunks of the islands are completely undeveloped, so they'll be the exact same views as when the Ancient Greeks were here thousands of years ago.

From Kos, you could head South and sail to Rhodes, with its medieval castles and crusading knights, or North to take in the Sponge-diving community at Kalymnos, the Italian WWII military base at Leros, or the cave where St John wrote the Bibles' Book of Revelation in isolated Patmos. We can help you find and book your ideal yacht or catamaran, with one of our trusted Charter Partners - just get in touch or search in the pink box with live prices and availability !

Must See if you're Sailing from Kos

6-day Sailing Itinerary from Kos

The Dodecanese islands offer an excellent (and beautiful) playground for a sailor. There are tens of islands to explore, and there is something for everyone - from secluded bays, to small seemingly forgotten towns like Leros, to Kalymnos (famous for producing the best sponge divers in the world) and the colossal historic tourist town of Rhodes.

Kos - 6 day sailing itinerary

In total, this itinerary is 108 nautical miles (or nM), which is long enough to do some serious sailing, but short enough to feel leisurely and to give you time to explore before, after or during sailing each leg. Most yachts average at least five to six knots, and with an average sailing distance of under 20 nM, that means you’ll be sailing for about four hours a day, depending upon how slick your crew operates. That leaves time for leisurely breakfasts, long lunches, short walks, or for nosing into bays en-route for a swim.

This is a six day itinerary on the basis that after checking in and getting food, drink and other provisions on board, you likely won't be able to do any significant sailing on the Saturday you arrive, and you'll have to return the yacht to Kos for Friday night (but will be able to sleep on it for the night), so you'll likely only have six days of sailing.

Kalymnos

From Kos, you’ll need to bear North past the old town, and then pretty much due West, keeping the coastline of Kos on your port side, and most likely reaching your sails across the prevailing winds, which should be arriving from the North-west, and hitting the right hand side of your face as you make your way out and along Kos and past the island of Pserimos.

The rugged mountainous island just off the nose of the boat on your starboard side is Kalymnos, where we’re spending the first night. It was originally famous for having the best sponge divers in the world (and they were sent around the world to free-dive and collect live sponges by hand), but after disease killed much of the local sponge a couple of decades ago, it is now just as famous for being important in the world of rock-climbing, and people come from all over the world to test themselves on those there walls of rock.

Kalymnos is a cute tourist town, and you won’t have to walk far from your boat to get your hands on some local sponge or their delicious local honey (infused with thyme, oregano and sage, all grown on the hills around the island). Enjoy the change in the pace of life here – it will feel a light years away from the normal hustle and bustle and the world of work.

Leros

Nowadays it is back to being a remote Greek island, but there are signs of the bloody history – from a medieval castle on a hilltop, Mussolini's summer palace (which he ordered to be built after Lakki was used as Italy's biggest naval base outside Italy, and seeing how beautiful the island was), and the clock tower, which ominously stopped ticking at the precise moment when the town was bombed by the Germans in World War two. Indeed, Leros was the second-most bombed island in the war (after Crete), and some big, big ships are below the water-line in or around Lakki harbour (as a result of the centuries of war, the area is very popular with divers).

But Leros is also an ancient island, and was once the hunting ground of Artemis, the daughter of Zeus himself, and the goddess of animals and the wilderness. Leros used to be a place where legend tells us she used to hunt deer. Lakki town itself is a grand and elegant town, with a good selection of shops, and tavernas selling the freshest fish you can imagine.

Patmos

Having seen the climbing enthusiasts of Kalymnos, and the divers of Leros, the island of Patmos is a major pilgrimage destination – St John lived in a cave on the island when he was living in exile and it was here that he heard the voice of God and wrote the book of revelation for the Bible. The Cave of Revelation or Cave of the Apocalypse is only a few kilometres out of town and is supposed to be an incredibly moving place to visit.

Skala town itself started as five or six grand holiday homes for a bunch of super-rich families, but has developed through the years to become a welcoming haven for tourists, with some beautiful waterfront bars and cafes.

Lipsi

With the prevailing wind, you'll likely be able to get from Patmos to Lipsi in one straight broad reach, so, after a couple of days of tacking, you can let your crew rest easy for much of the day, and they can enjoy the sunshine.

Lipsi is off the beaten track, so it is about as remote and unspoilt as you can get. It used to be a place you could only reach if you had your own boat, but the land-lubbers are catching up and there’s now daily ferries from Leros, as well as a small amount of tourist accommodation. People mainly come for the crystal-clear waters and the secluded and beautiful beaches (which used to have a reputation for being popular with naturists, but not so much these days).

Vati, Kalymnos

We're essentially heading down the back-side of Leros and Kalymnos, so you'll have seen all there is to see of those islands. If you get an early start, you might even be able to visit the dusty town of Agia Marina or the beaches of Alinda or Sykate on the way, but just enjoy the terrain, sunshine and the gentle lapping of the sea against the hull of the boat as you continue South-west down the coast.

You'll need to sail up the small bay or channel to get up to Vathi, which looks like a super-small village, but it extends right down the valley for another couple of kilometres from the marina, and includes a monastery as well as an abundance of farmland, where they cultivate forests of citrus trees. There's a number of very welcoming tavernas here.

Kos

The prevailing wind will likely be behind you, and the helm will feel it on the back of their head as Kos comes round the corner and into view. You get a brilliant view of Kos as you go past, and now is a good time to try and get a team photo if you haven't already got one. Now is also a good time to reflect on what a great week you've had. Hopefully you've really enjoyed it and the crew have all been brilliant, you've been impressed by the things you've seen, you've eaten heartily, drunk sensibly enough, and are returning back home with even better friends that you arrived with.

Once you're in Kos, you'll need to head to the refuelling dock to fill up the fuel tanks before you return the boat to the same sort of area where you found her. Our yacht charter partner will come and inspect the boat (so that they can be sure to have it ready for the next group of sailors who will take her out), but you can stay on the boat for the night. If you haven't yet explored Kos, then now is a great time to get out there and check out the city – it's full of history, and a great place to explore with an ice cream in your hand. It should also be fairly lively as lots of holiday-makers will be spending their last night on the island (including a fair few sailors).

And then you're off. Have a safe flight, and, when you’re downloading your photos, come and have a look at PlainSailing.com to read other destination guides and to start planning your next voyage!

Sailing Conditions

Greece Sailing - Wind Conditions

The remote location of the islands also means that the winds have time to build up a decent head of steam – it's regularly Force 4 or 5 (11 – 22 knots) which is perfect sailing conditions (though be beware that there have been Force 8 winds in August before, and make sure you check the weather forecasts).

After the sun sets, the wind tends to die down to a light breeze for a few hours before picking up in the early morning (so make sure your lines are tight before you go to bed or you'll be back out on deck at 3am in your underwear to stop the unbearable clanking of the ropes against the mast!)

Kos - Average Temperature

Marina Details - Kos Marina

Kos Marina is based a short ten-minute walk from Kos town, a tourist town based around an ancient harbour, and with a very lively nightlife. The marina has a restaurant/bar, as well as a shop, chandlery and laundry facilities. Toilet and shower facilities are to a decent standard, and the marina is well sheltered from the prevailing winds.

As charters are normally Saturday to Saturday, you might be needing somewhere to rest your head on land if your flights are on a Friday and/or a Sunday. We’d recommend Hotel Koala or Triton Hotel .

Best Times To Hire A Yacht In Kos

charter yacht kos

Is there truly an “ideal” time to hire a yacht in Kos? The answer may not be as straightforward as one might think. Kos is a year-round destination for sailing aficionados, yet each season has its distinct flavor.

Spring: A Season of Blooming Adventures The spring months in Kos, running from March till May, bring about a mild and comfortable climate, ideal for those looking to sail the Aegean without the height of the summer crowds. This is the time when the island’s flora comes to life, dressing the landscapes in vibrant colors, and is perfect for visitors interested in experiencing local Easter celebrations, providing a unique cultural insight into the traditions of Kos.

Summer: Sun-Soaked High Season From June through August, the island of Kos pulses with energy as the peak season takes hold. These months are characterized by hot, sun-drenched days where the cooling sea becomes a welcoming respite. Beach lovers and nightlife enthusiasts will find summer ideal as the island vibrates with festivities, open-air dining, and the full swing of tourist activities.

Autumn: The Golden Mellow September to November sees a quieter Kos for yacht-goers who prefer tranquil harbors and cooler sailing conditions. The sea remains warm, the crowds disperse, and the pace of island life slows, allowing for a more relaxed exploration. This is the perfect time for culinary expeditions as well, with a host of gastronomic festivals celebrating the harvest season.

Winter: Serene Solitude In the winter months, from December to February, Kos takes a peaceful breath. With cooler temperatures and a calm atmosphere, this period offers a different kind of yachting experience. Those who seek solitude to reflect and relax, or who wish to discover the island without the summer crowds, will find winter ideal. Additionally, rates for yacht charters during this season tend to be more affordable, making it a great option for budget-conscious travelers.

Whether you choose to sail in spring, summer, autumn, or winter, Kos offers an unparalleled experience that caters to all preferences. Each season presents its unique charms and discoveries. Ultimately, the decision hinges on your personal needs and desires. Tell us your needs and we’ll tailor every detail for you! Weather and sailing conditions in Kos.

Navigating the waters around Kos, one must consider the seasonal winds, which significantly impact sailing conditions.

The northerly Meltemi winds, prevalent in summer months, present a challenge even to seasoned sailors, offering brisk breezes that can swiftly intensify. Spring and autumn, however, are often graced with milder Sirocco winds from the south, creating a more forgiving environment for leisurely cruises.

The Aegean Sea itself is known for its crystal-clear waters and the potential for swiftly changing conditions, obliging captains to remain vigilant. With careful planning and respect for local weather patterns, sailing around Kos can be a triumph, showcasing the alluring character of the Dodecanese seascape.

Choose a bareboat charter, a crewed charter, or a skippered holiday

charter yacht kos

When it comes to choosing between a bareboat, a crewed yacht charter, or a skippered one, you should consider several factors including your experience, preferences, and needs.

Bareboat Yacht Charter

Opting for a bareboat yacht charter promises a hands-on adventure where you are the master of your voyage. Ideal for skilled sailors with a valid sailing license, this choice affords the freedom to plot your course, discover beautiful beaches at your leisure, and truly bond with the sea. The autonomy of a bareboat trip allows for a bespoke experience, though it demands sailing savvy and navigational know-how.

Crewed Yacht Charter

Conversely, a crewed yacht charter allows you to indulge in the luxury of a Kos sailing holiday where all needs are met by an experienced crew. This option is splendid for those seeking a relaxing getaway where the trip unfolds seamlessly, courtesy of the crew who handle navigation, cooking, and everything in between. With a crewed charter, you enjoy the tranquility of the Aegean while someone else takes the helm.

Skippered Yacht Charter

Choosing a skippered yacht charter strikes a comfortable balance between the bareboat and crewed options. It’s an excellent choice for those with limited sailing experience or for those who prefer to focus on the leisure aspects of the trip while still learning a bit about sailing. When you opt for a skippered charter, you’ll have a professional skipper to navigate the yacht and manage technical sailing aspects, offering you the chance to relax fully or participate in sailing to the extent you desire. It’s a stress-free way to enjoy the water, with the added benefit of local knowledge from your skipper, who can guide you to the most secluded spots and enchanting destinations around Kos.

We understand that choosing the right charter for your needs can be a complex decision. We stand ready to guide you through the pros and cons, ensuring your Kos adventure matches your expectations!

Kos island has evidence of human civilisation dating back 5,000 years. Ancient Greek philosopher and father of modern medicine Hippocrates spent time there, and you can visit Asklepieion that followed the great man's priciples of treatment in ancient times.

As well as Ancient Greek relics you can see buidings, castles and churches left by the Venetians, Ottomans, and Knights of St John as well. The Ottomans have some of the greatest modern influence on the Greek island thanks to it lying just an hour by ferry off the Turkish coast.

Kos is today a major holiday resort, only slightly lying behind nearby Rhodes in terms of annual visitor numbers. The more you look the more you will understand why - there's many a beautiful sandy beach (both organised and unorganised), nightlife to suit many a taste, and a natural beauty that will satisfy everyone.

Kos is regarded as a cycling island for getting around. There is a 13km cycle track for those who wish to stretch their legs, and for those into mountain biking the mountainous inland will definitely appeal. Getting about by bike is a greener way of exploring the island and thanks to cycling's popularity.

Though you will inevitably enter Kos Town (you are on a sailing holiday) you should also visit nearby Kardamena. Kardamena Bay has a small harbour but is where a theatre from ancient times has recently been excavated, there are several important churches but at the same time there is very good entertainment and modern infrastructure.

On a Kos yacht charter you can take in whatever floats your boat from modern relaxation to ancient wonders!

Explore Kos By Renting A Yacht

The Dodecanese Islands are traditionally seven islands but a Kos yacht charter can involve landing on a few more than that even without leaving the archipelago. Leaving the island's main marina in Kos Town you will be able to head NW or SE to follow the line of islands according to what you want.

Heading NW on your charter yacht the first island you will run into is the mountainous island of Kalymnos, a major international climbing centre. Mooring in Agia Marina, Leros - the next island is famed for its stunning villages and beautiful beaches as is the next island Lipsi. Patmos is a religious centre and is said to be where St John the Apostle was inspired to write the Book of Revelations from his visit to the Cave of the Apocalypse.

Almost as north west as you can get in the Dodecanese, Ikaria is one of five 'Blue Zone' islands in the world where people live the longest and healthiest lives on the planet. Thanks to its governance it is also one where tourism isn't too much of an industry, allowing its natural wonders to flourish and indeed those who are lucky enough to call it home.

Heading south west you can go to Rhodes with its ancient ruins and wonderful beaches. Other islands in the chain in that direction are Nisyros with its volcanic landscape, Tilos with its astounding scenery and Byzantine churches, and Halki that has only recently been re-inhabited.

A Dodecanese island sailing holiday, be it a bareboat yacht charter, gulet or skippered yacht charter, will often be in the teeth of the strong and steady Meltemi but this has in fact made the region one of the favoured destinations for yachtcharter enthusiasts. You will be confident of the wind through most of the summer and the sights, sounds, tastes and smells will make it a sailing vacation to remember.

How To Get To Kos

Three major airports can be used to access Kos - Kos Airport, Bodrum in Turkey and Rhodes Airport.

Kos Airport

This is served by many European airlines throughout the summer and a bus service runs to Kos Town.

Bodrum Airport, Turkey

Though Kos is technically in Greece, the Turkish coast is far closer than the Greek mainland. You can fly into Bodrum Airport in Turkey, taking a ferry and a bus/taxi on to Kos Town. Bodrum is closer than Rhodes.

Rhodes Airport

This has a large number of daily flights from much of Europe, and you can take a ferry to Kos to join your Dodecaneseyacht charter from there.

Marinas In Kos

There are several smaller marinas on Kos Island but only one with a substantial number of berths. Yacht charter companies offer gulet , catamaran , monohull sailing boat and motor yacht hire out of Marina Kos that are available as a bareboat charter, skippered yacht charter or crewed yacht charter.

Marina Kos:

Capable of taking a luxury yacht of 60 metres, this is a very well equipped marina with its own beach.

Berth Characteristics:

Max Length 60m (196 Feet)

Max Draught 5m (16.4 Feet)

List of additional services: Shore power, water, Wifi, showers, toilets, laundry, wastewater collection, recycling and refuse collection, market, supermarket, bar, restaurant, car rental, beach, ATM, yacht repair.

Suggested Sailing Routes From Kos

The Meltemi blows from the north-east. This is why heading up to the north-west Dodecanese islands on a sailing yacht is going to appeal more on an 'uphill-downhill' route. You can also head south-east on a 'downhill-uphill' route but that will often involve beating in the latter half of the week when you are a little more tired.

7 days - Kos to Ikaria and back: This route involves island hopping north-west and then back south-west to Kos Town. Heading upwind then down you will spend days in Kalymnos, Leros, Limnos and Patmos, with no more than 35-40NM of sailing per day at a stretch.

14 days - Dodecanese circuit: This is an opportunity to sail north as far as Ikaria and south as far as Rhodes. You will see the very best of the island chain including the churches, mountains and exquisite beaches of the smaller islands yet have time to take in the tourist resorts of Kos and Rhodes as you go. You will get some good reaching in as you head out to Astipalea and Nisyros on two legs heading east but beating and running on different legs too.

Best Times To Hire A Yacht In Kos

The sailing season runs from late April to October with July and August being the busiest months for yacht charter. Meltemi winds can make for exciting sailing in July and August when you honestly just want to hide from the heat.

The sea is cooler - often quite chilly - at the beginning of the sailing season but there is rainfall in Spring. As the days lengthen you will still see green fields and flowers in May and the winds can be quite benign too. Combined with the crowds being smaller, this suggests that May to early June are the sweet spot for a Cos yacht charter.

Come September and October the seas are still like a warm bath. However, there are often water shortages on the islands and everything looks parched.

Sailing Weather In Kos

April to mid-June: There is rainfall and the temperatures build steadily from the mid-teens to the mid 20 degrees C range. There are sometimes gentle southerly winds, though these are replaced by ever stronger N-NW Meltemi winds that are rarely hazardous but make for exciting sailing at times.

Late June-August: You'll be unlucky if you see any rain, though it could be welcome in the summer heat, temperatures are in the 30s.

September-October: The seas remain warm and the Meltemi eases. These months can be the best time of year to sail as the temperatures are often in the comfortable low to mid-20s.

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

There are four marinas on Kos Island. However the yacht charter centre is Marina Kos in Kos Town, but it is worth a sail to the smaller ones - the 25 berth Kardemena Marina is in the centre of a town that's quite different to Kos Town.

Why go in the busiest months of July and August? The Meltemi is at its strongest then too. Going in September when the kids are at school you will find the seas still warm, the air not so hot and the winds gentler. Did we mention the crowds are thinner too?!

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat hire before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool on most evenings.

If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a skippered on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.

We are confident that our prices are the most competitive and transparent in the market.

We won't charge any booking fees when you make a booking with us.

We have the highest number of verified and vetted boats available on the market.

Kos, the capital and main port of Kos Island, is on the north-east coast very close to the Turkish coast. It is a beautiful city, lush and green with palm lined beaches, a mountainous backdrop and interesting archeological sites from the Hellenistic and Roman periods. There are some particularly good mosaics to be found as well as some early Christian churches with impressive frescoes.

Walking distance from the historic Kos Old Town is the full-service Kos Marina. From here you can sail to the lesser known islands of the Dodecanese that are hard to reach without a yacht.

Kos has an international airport; about 23 km away that services many Greek and European cities. Ferries run between Kos and the port of Piraeus all year round. Both high speed and conventional ferries that carry vehicles run this route. There are also passenger ferries from neighbouring islands and also from Turkey.

Sailing conditions

Kos is an excellent sailing destination for bareboat yacht charter . Sailors wanting guaranteed wind and longer passages will enjoy the sailing between the unspoilt and varied Dodecanese islands. The prevailing 'Meltemi' wind blows all summer from the NW. Force 4 to 6, offering exhilarating sailing. It can reach Force 7 and sometimes blows for days.

A brief introduction to Kos

The Greek island of Kos belongs to the Dodecanese island chain, located in the south-eastern Aegean Sea. Kos has 112 km of coastline and is the third-largest Dodecanese island, after Rhodes and Karpathos. The island is located between Kalymnos and Nisyros, just 10 NM south of the Turkish coastline.

The island’s capital is the town of Kos, located on the northern coast of the island. The island has a long history, with the first mention of it dating back to Homer’s Iliad. Impressive landmarks and archaeological findings attest to the rich and prosperous past, mainly due to its silk trading past. The strategic location of the island, close to Anatolia, ensured the island remained a vital foothold in the Aegean Sea throughout its history. Over that time it was ruled by the ancient Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans and the Italians before it finally became a part of Greece following the Second World War.

Why you should choose a Kos sailing holiday

Today, the island of Kos is a popular destination and the second most visited Dodecanese island after Rhodes. Visiting the island, you will be greeted by lush vegetation and spectacular beaches touching the clear, turquoise sea. On Kos you can have both an active vacation - enjoying numerous watersport activities, and a more relaxed one - exploring the rich culture and history of Kos.

If you are more drawn to cultural side then you can visit local museums and historical landmarks like the imposing Castle of the Knights of Saint John, located in Kos town. If on the other hand you want a more active break, then you can explore the many bike paths found across the island. These have also meant Kos is unofficially know as “the island of bicycles”. Equally you could take advantage of the perfect surfing conditions, that make Kos a favourite destination for windsurfers and kitesurfers from all over Europe. As a result, you can find several surfing centres located across the island.

Being a popular tourist destination, Kos also offers an abundance of cafes, restaurants and nightclubs, perfect for late-night entertainment.

The best time to sail in Kos

If you wish to enjoy swimming and other water-based activities, a visit during the summer is the best time for a sailing holiday around the island. The sea around Kos is crystal clear, and the sea temperatures can reach up to 25°C at the height of summer, making it ideal for families with children. Those that wish to have a more culture-orientated holiday and avoid the summer heats should consider visiting in May or September when there are fewer crowds as well.

What to expect from Kos sailing conditions

Sailing the Dodecanese islands can be a bit more challenging and unpredictable due to the strong winds present in the area. During the summer, the prevailing wind is a north-western wind blowing down the Turkish coast. Another wind present during the summer is the strong Meltemi wind, blowing from the north. Nights around Kos are usually calm, with only a light breeze blowing, before they pick up again in the morning.

Having a typically warm Mediterranean climate, Kos sees plenty of sunshine and warm weather, especially in the summer. Temperatures reach above 20°C as early as April and continue rising until they exceed 30°C during July and August.

Our favourite areas of Kos to explore

Kos has been inhabited since prehistoric times, with the settlements of Kos, Kefalos, Kardamena, Antimachia, Pyli dating back to antiquity. Newer settlements like Tigaki, Marmari, Mastichari have sprawled on the northern side of the island. Located in the interior of the island, towards Mount Dikaios, areas of Zia, Asfendiou and Zipari attract visitors with their splendid natural beauty.

Kos town is the capital of the island and the most important settlement on the island. Here you will be greeted with a mixture of various architectural styles influenced by the past rulers of the island. Kos is filled with ancient landmarks like the Ancient Agora, Medieval fortifications like the Castle of the Knights of Saint John and museums like the Archaeological Museum of Kos, testifying to the impressive history of the island. The town also boasts a rich nightlife with a wide selection of cafes, taverns, restaurants and shops located in pedestrian areas.

  • Tigaki - located west of Kos town, is a popular holiday destination for both locals and foreigners alike. Here you will find an impressive range of choices in accommodation, dining and entertainment. Visit the nearby protected area of Alikes, the most important wetlands in the Dodecanese.
  • Marmari - located on the island’s north shore and just west of Tigaki, is a small and peaceful settlement, attracting visitors looking for a quiet summer vacation. Here you can enjoy water activities on a beautiful sandy beach, sample traditional Greek food in local tavernas and shop for some souvenirs.
  • Mastichari - is a popular fishing village on the northern coast and the second-largest harbour on the island of Kos. Mastichari is the ideal place to visit some of the seaside taverns and sample the fresh daily catch of the local fisherman. Mastichari is also a great base for exploring the nearby islands of Kalymnos, Pserimos and Leros.
  • Asfendiou - located 14km southwest of Kos town, is an area sprawling across the foothills of Mount Dikeos. Here you will find numerous stone towers and churches, testaments to the rich history and unwavering faith of the locals. The Asfendiou area consists of several districts like Asomatos, Lagoudi and Chaichoutes - also known as Agios Dimitrios, named after the local church.
  • Zia - found on the southern slopes of Mount Dikeos, is the perfect location for viewing spectacular sunsets and offers stunning views of the nearby islands of Kalymnos and Pserimos as well as the Turkish coast. During the summer, Zia is full of wandering visitors, looking to taste local delicacies, purchase unique local products and souvenirs and stroll through the cobblestone alleyways up to its crystal-clear freshwater springs, like Kefalovrisi.
  • Kefalos - the village of Kefalos was built on the site of the island’s older capital city, Astypalea, and it consists of two areas: the settlement on top of a hill that has a central square and a mill, and the seaside area known as “Kamari”, full of restaurants and accommodations. Some of the impressive archaeological landmarks in Kefalos include the Castle of the Knights and the churches in the area of Agios Stefanos. Here you will find stunning beaches and crystal-clear turquoise sea, offering a variety of water sports.
  • Kardamena - a former fishing village and a popular resort today. It was established in 1865 on the ruins of the ancient city of Alasarna and its Hellenistic temple of Apollo. Its small harbour, whose surrounding cliffs act as natural wave breakers, is a convenient departure point for visits to the neighbouring island of Nisyros. From here, one can take a boat to visit the hot springs of Agia Irini, famed for their therapeutic healing properties.

Kos sailing marinas to dock your yacht

Kos Marina, opened in 2001, is located just a 10-minute walk away from Kos town, next to the old harbour. This popular marina offers 250 berths with mooring lines, water supply, electricity and telephone connection. There is also a dry storage area equiped with 150 dry berths. Kos marina can accommodate vessels up to 80 m in length with a draft of up to 5 m. A breakwater, located on the eastern side of the marina, offers adequate protection.

There are no other marinas on the island of Kos, but mooring is possible in other places like the Kamari port in the bay of Kefalos, the port of Kardamena, and the Mastichari port on the northern coast of Kos.

Charming places to anchor around Kos

  • Kamari - located on the southern coast of Kos, in the Kamari Bay, the village is perfect for exploring this side of the island. The seabed is sandy with good holding and depths varying from 3 m to 10 m. Here you will be well-protected from northern winds but more exposed to the southern ones.
  • Tigani - is located on the southern coast of the island, just north of Kamari. Anchoring here, you will find a sandy seabed with good holding. Depth is between 5 m and 7 m with a bit of a swell. Tigani offers good protection from the Meltemi winds.
  • Kefalos - anchoring near Kefalos, you will find a sandy and muddy seabed, offering good holding and depths around 3 m. The area offers good protection from all but southern winds. The nearby coast offers plenty of restaurants and entertainment.
  • Kardamena - is a popular tourist destination, full of stunning sandy beaches. Anchoring in front of the Kardamena beach, you will find a sandy bottom with depths of around 3 m and good holding. You will be protected from northern and western winds here.

Typical Kos yacht charter prices

Weekly charter prices on Kos are similar to those in the rest of Greece and can differ significantly, depending on several key factors. The primary influence on the price is the time of year you wish to charter, with the prices increasing as you approach the high season during the summer. Another parameter that can have a significant impact on the final cost of your charter is the type of boat you plan to charter. Sailboats are usually the cheapest options, with catamarans and motor yachts charters more expensive in general. If you plan carefully and book your charter months in advance however, you can get a considerable discount, so explore your options thoroughly before deciding.

Starting price for chartering a sailboat for up to six people on the island of Kos outside the high season is around €1,000 per week. Approaching the months of July and August, the charter price for the same boat can double. Starting prices for catamarans and motorboats are higher, starting from around €2,000 per week, outside the high season.

Due to the strong winds, sailing the Aegean Sea can prove to be challenging so hiring a local skipper, which will cost you around €200 per day, is recommended for less experienced sailing enthusiasts and required for those without a license.

Getting to Kos

The easiest and fastest way to reach the island is by flying to the Kos International Airport, located 24km away from Kos town. There are domestic flights all year round mainly from Athens, with frequent flights from Thessaloniki, Rhodes, Heraklion and Astypalea as well. During summer, at the peak of the tourist season, flights from several European countries are also available. Flying from Athens to Kos will take around 1 hour.

Upon your arrival at Kos Airport, there are several options for further transfer around the island, including renting a car, taking a taxi or the local bus line.

Kos can also be easily reached by ferry from Piraeus port near Athens, with four available departures each week. However, due to the distance between Kos and Piraeus, the trip takes around 11 hours. Kos is also connected by ferry with Rhodes, Patmos, Leros, and Kalymnos with the ferry route between the closest island of Patmos taking around 2 hours. There are also ferry routes connecting Kos with the Turkish coastal town of Bodrum.

These islands attract visitors with their natural beauty, rich cultural heritage and impressive historical landmarks. Those looking for a more active holiday can try out rock climbing on Kalymnos or take diving lessons on Leros.

This route is perfect for: Families and friends can experience a proper summer holiday visiting the numerous beautiful beaches along the route. Less experienced sailors will appreciate the short distances between the islands, while those more confident will revel in the strong Meltemi winds that are present in the area.

Best time of year for sailing: From the beginning of April until late September.

Day 1: Kalymnos

The first stop on this route north from Kos is the island Kalymnos and its barren yet beautiful landscape. Due to its massive rock formations, Kalymnos has emerged as a popular rock climbing destination over the last couple of years. Arriving here, you will be greeted with plenty of lovely beach resorts and a relaxed atmosphere, perfect for family holidays. Mooring is available in Limin Kalímnou Marina located in the town of Kalymnos or further north, in the secure Vathi Marina.

Day 2: Leros

Due north from Kalymnos, the island of Leros is another charming island with fewer crowds and the same relaxed atmosphere. Agia Marina and Alinda are the biggest settlements on the island, but there is no mass tourism here. The most impressive landmark on the island is the Medieval Castle of Pandeli, a Byzantine fortress overlooking the capital of Leros. Located on the southeast side of the island, The Leros Marina Evros offers good shelter against all winds and has 220 berths for vessels up to 50 m in length.

Day 3: Lipsi

The island of Lipsi, located east of Patmos and north of Leros is the epitome of a charming Greek island. The added bonus is that there is no mass tourism on the island, making this small island perfect for enjoying the pristine sea and the spectacular beaches. Lipsi Town is the only settlement on the island and the centre of the island’s activities. Here you will also find the main port of the island, a museum and several taverns and cafes. Be sure to visit the nearby Lientou and Kambos beaches.

Day 4: Arki

Leaving the town of Lipsi, sail further north to the least inhabited island of the route, Arki. A visit to this island is the culmination of an escape from civilization and the search for the most peaceful Greek island. This tiny island has only one market, but there are a couple of restaurants here, perfect for a delicious meal. The beach Tiganaika, a beautiful sand and pebble beach located on the southern coast of the island, is a definite must visit.

Day 5: Patmos

The next destination on the route is the island of Patmos, due west from Arki. Sail to the northern part of the island where you will find a stretch of coast, well protected from the northern winds, full of spectacular sand and pebble beaches. The most popular beaches here include the Geranou beach, Kambos beach and the Agriolivadi beach. Make your way down south along the coast and anchor in one of the secure bays in the area.

Day 6: Patmos - Chora

On your second day on the island of Patmos, head over to the island’s capital of Chora and the small Skala Marina. Patmos is a popular Greek pilgrimage, where Saint John the Divine was inspired to write the Book of the Apocalypse inside the nearby Cave of the Apocalypse.

You will also find a large monastery dedicated to Saint John above Chora, and there are numerous religious festivals held here each year. Chora is also a charming village, full of small cafes and taverns, ideal for an afternoon stroll.

Day 7: Kos

The majority of the last day will be spent sailing back from Patmos to the island of Kos. Depending on the time available to you upon your return, sightseeing in the town of Kos is the perfect afternoon activity. Visit the Asklepieion archaeological site, the impressive Castle of the Knights or the Hippocrates Plane Tree where Hippocrates taught its students medicine.

Total sail distance: 280 NM

Visiting here, you will find small villages and secluded beaches, free of mass tourism. On the eastern coast of the island nestled in a wide bay, you will find the village of Livadia, the main port of the island. Mooring is possible in the port of Livadia, offering a yacht anchorage which can accommodate up to 35 vessels of different lengths, with water and electricity connection. Beaches worth visiting here include Eristos beach, Agios Antonios Beach, Livadia beach and the Plaka beach.

Day 3: Symi

Leaving Tilos, you will be taking a slight detour and sailing north towards the charming island of Symi, located near the Turkish coast. As you approach the port in Symi Town, the first thing you’ll notice is the beautiful and colourful architecture. Similar to the rest of the Dodecanese islands, there are impressive Medieval landmarks on the island, including the Venetian Castle towering above Symi town, offering spectacular views. The most popular destination on Symi is the Holy Monastery of Panormitis, located on the southern side of the island which attracts plenty of pilgrims each year. There are a couple of options for mooring on Symi, including the Limin Simis Marina in Symi Town, Pethi Marina in the nearby village of Pedi and Panormitis near the monastery.

Day 4: Rhodes

Located a short sail away from Symi is one of the most visited and popular Greek islands - Rhodes. The island is most famous for its rich history and stunning medieval architecture.

The Old Town of Rhodes is the most visited place on the island, attracting visitors to landmarks such as the Palace of Grand Master, the Street of the Knights, the old port of Mandraki and Hippocrates Square. Sailing enthusiasts with love for history will appreciate the opportunity to sail into the Mandraki harbour and pass where the once imposing Colossus of Rhodes stood.

Mooring is recommended in the newly expanded Rhodos Marinas, located about 4 km from the town of Rhodes. Here you will find a modern marina with extensive amenities and berths for 380 vessels up to 60m in length.

Day 5: Karpathos

Your next stop on this route of the southern Dodecanese islands is Karphatos, a secluded island located between Rhodes and Crete. Karpathos is still untouched by mass tourism and is a perfect place to enjoy the spectacular beaches like Kyra Panagia and Apella Those wanting to try water sports should head on to the southern coast of Karpathos, which offers ideal conditions for windsurfing. There are plenty of safe anchorages found in the well-protected bays across the island. Mooring is possible in the harbours of Dhiafani, Karpathos town and Finiki.

Day 6: Astypalea

The last stop on this tour of the southern Dodecanese islands before returning to Kos is the beautiful island of Astypalea. Vibrant architecture, similar to that found on Cycladic islands, is the first thing that will pop out once you arrive. Here you can enjoy a peaceful stroll down the streets of Astypalea town and visit the imposing Venitian Castle overlooking the village. The most popular Astypalea beaches on the island are Pera Gialos, Agios Konstantinos, and Livadia, offering spectacular clear sea and a relaxed atmosphere.

Sail north towards the island of Kos and stop along the way to Kos town and enjoy the natural beauty of the island. Located on the southwestern tip of the island, about 40 km from Kos town, Kefalos is a beautiful, picturesque village where you can enjoy the spectacular Aegean Sea one last time. If you have enough time, be sure to visit the impressive historical landmarks in Kos town.

Screen Rant

10 below deck charter guests who will never return to the franchise.

While the charter guests who appear on Below Deck have a great time while filming the show, many aren't invited back for a number of reasons.

  • Some charter guests on Below Deck have caused unnecessary drama and won't likely return due to bad behavior.
  • Captain Glenn Shephard from Below Deck Sailing Yacht faced backlash from Barrie, who called him two-faced.
  • Former guest Dr. Francis Martinis will not return to Below Deck after he was arrested for faking prescriptions.

The Below Deck franchise has featured many charter guests since 2013, many of whom will never return . The Bravo series focuses on expensive charters with wealthy guests who have attitude problems and over-the-top demands. That includes Charter guest Alexis Bellino, who boarded Captain Lee Rosbach’s yacht with her boyfriend at the time, Andy Bohn. She was disrespectful and made everyone uncomfortable with her and Andy's PDA. She even insulted crew members after featuring on the show.

Like Alexis, Delores Flora from Below Deck season 8 was a terrible guest. Not only did she misbehave, but she also got drunk and s wam while intoxicated, which is not only not allowed, it frightened the crew members. Delores got kicked out of the yacht the next day. These guests created unnecessary drama on the boat and will likely never return like a few others from the franchise.

20 Best Reality TV Shows Right Now

8 barrie & tony, below deck sailing yacht.

Barrie and Tony Drewitt Barlow had a decent time in the Below Deck Sailing Yacht seasons 2 and 3. Despite that, they left with a bitter taste because of Captain Glenn Shephard. In 2021, Barrie participated in a podcast, Pita Party: The Podcast , where he claimed that Captain Glenn bothered him while using his phone .

Barrie said, “he (Captain Glenn) was a two-face b*stard,” adding that he just didn’t like his presence.

7 Frank Fay

Below deck mediterranean.

In Below Deck Mediterranean season 7, Charter guest Frank Fay had a thing for second stew Kyle Viljoen. He pursued him on the yacht, but unfortunately, their relationship didn’t last. Frank will likely never return to the series as long as Captain Sandy Yawn allows Kyle to work for her. Even if Kyle quits, Frank wouldn’t want to be in an environment that would remind him of his failed relationship.

6 Erica Rose

Erica Rose appeared on Below Deck Sailing Yacht two seasons in a row. Erica was highly offensive toward the crew member, as well as her husband, Charles Sanders, and to make things worse, she left the crew with a measly tip , leading fans to slam her on social media. Ultimately, Erica had to apologize for her bad attitude but never returned to give the crew the tip they deserved. Nobody on Below Deck Sailing Yacht would ever want to return.

5 Justin Guarini

Justin Guarini’s time on Below Deck Sailing Yacht was not dramatic at all; however, he’ll probably never return to the series. Justin wouldn’t return because he wasn't the primary guest. He joined his friend, Kim, who wanted to enjoy a luxury yacht trip. It was more of a one-and-done deal. Secondly, nobody recognized him at all. Viewers later realized who he was and how he was the runner-up on American Idol season 1. Justin is a theatre artist and has made a name for himself. However, it was embarrassing that so many fans had no clue who he was .

Below Deck: 8 Charter Guests With The Worst Attitudes

4 johnny damon.

Johnny Damon’s time at Below Deck Med was full of explosive moments. Once, he sent the food back, citing that the experience wasn’t “five stars.” On another occasion, his wife, Michelle, created drama by yelling at the owner of another yacht . Overall, the experience was simply terrible on both sides. Crew members didn’t love Johnny and his wife, and the couple didn’t respect the crew members. It is unlikely that Captain Sandy would want to host the couple again as long as she’s in charge.

3 Krystal Murphy

Former charter guest Krystal Murphy boarded Captain Lee’s yacht with her friends. She immediately began showing red flags, drinking, and just being a menace. Krystal fought with her friend, Chelsea, creating unnecessary drama. She even passed out and punched a friend in the face. Former Chief Stew Kate Chastain disliked serving Krystal and called her a “spoiled brat;” she wanted to throw her off the yacht. Nowadays, Krystal has seemingly become a more private person. It doesn’t seem like Krystal would want to be on TV again.

2 Steve Bradley

Below Deck fans should remember Steve Bradley as he made many appearances on the show. In Below Deck season 3, he wanted a foam party and demanded the crew to figure it out and follow his commands, acting like a king. In Below Deck season 6, Steve made more outrageous requests. Apart from being a wild guest, Steve was entitled and acted inappropriately at times . No Below Deck captain would want to host him again as he didn't come off as very likable.

1 Dr. Francis Martinis

Below deck mediterranean & below deck sailing yacht.

Dr. Francis Martinis from Below Deck Med and Below Deck Sailing Yacht has a zero chance of returning. While the former charter guest didn’t have too many issues on the show, his personal life issues will stop him from appearing on Bravo again. According to TMZ , Dr. Francis and his wife, Jessica, were arrested for filling out fake prescriptions in December 2023 . The couple used the names of Below Deck stars and got caught red-handed. The Below Deck franchise would never want to welcome felons, especially when their mugshots are all over the internet.

Below Deck airs Mondays at 9 p.m. EDT on Bravo.

Below Deck is a popular reality TV franchise that focuses on a group of crew members as they work on luxurious yachts and cater to their client's needs. After the original series proved to be a success, Bravo developed a handful of spinoff shows including Below Deck Selling Yacht, Below Deck Adventure, Below Deck Down Under, and Below Deck Mediterranean.
