Oceanco-90-metre-DAR-superyacht-Project-Shark

DAR: On board Oceanco's 90m shark-inspired superyacht

Oceanco’s 90 metre  DAR  has fixed a perennial problem: how to enhance the views from inside while keeping the outside from looking in.

A group of journalists linger over a sculptural bar, while a yard employee leads another wide-eyed writer past delicate leaf shapes traced in the floor of the light-filled spa, towards butterflies so vividly painted on the bathroom wall that they seem ready to fly away when the door opens. We’re exploring the treasure trove of details on the 90 metre Oceanco superyacht DAR , and it is bewitching us. But there is one feature that stops everyone dead: the panorama of Monaco unfurling behind a glass wall.

The view dominates the upper saloon: tenders shuttling in and out of the port, white yachts in the packed marina, apartment blocks on the hillside and the blue sky above it all. Walking to the edge of the space and leaning against full-height glass produces the sensation of being suspended in mid-air. There is no distortion: it’s like we’re looking through sunglasses that enhance colours and reduce glare. To the outside world, however, the glass might as well be a magical cloak shrouding all that is within. Even with lights on, it is impossible to make out what is behind the glass from the outside.

“You can see Monaco, but Monaco can’t see you,” says Luiz de Basto , DAR ’s designer. “The concept of the design is a completely connected interior and exterior.”

That immersive effect, that moment of surprise as the outside world pours in, the absence of boundaries between inside and out: de Basto had imagined it all eight years earlier while seated in his Miami office overlooking Biscayne Bay. His quest at the time was to design an 85 metre yacht that concealed its volume and decks within a shapely glass envelope that would give its owners what he says they value above all else: privacy.

“Glass was the main inspiration as a way to improve contact with nature,” he says. As he developed the idea further, he thought about one particular sea animal that eventually lent its name to the project. The shark.

“The association with the hammerhead shark jumped at me when I searched for a way to create wing stations. I’ve always been very interested in nature and the animal world, probably because of my childhood in Angola and early contact with the big outdoors,” he says.

Just as the hammerhead’s wide-set eyes give it exceptional vision, the shapely wing stations could enhance the captain’s ability to see down the long hull sides. He took his idea further. “If you look closely you see that the mast is like a dorsal fin. Everything sort of flowed from there,” he says. “In three or four pages, the yacht was born, almost like you see it here.”

Of course, it’s one thing to imagine and draw a concept; it’s quite another to bring to fruition a technically complex design such as this. The next step de Basto took was to show his idea to Dutch superyacht builder Oceanco. “I thought they would be the right match for this particular project, sportier and more unconventional than most and with lots of glass,” he says.

They had a meeting at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show a few weeks later. “We liked the overall design and the technical challenges associated with the project and started working on a design package together,” says Oceanco. The yacht grew a few metres to an even 90, but the integrity of the design remained. “We went to great lengths to keep the overall look, but also the details of his design. We remained faithful to the concept, which is strong and well thought out.”

One of the most complex aspects of the yacht was its most obvious feature – the seamless black glass that encloses the superstructure. “ DAR has about 390 square metres of glass in the superstructure alone, not counting doors and hull windows. The glass panels are 1.8 metres by three metres each, glued to the aluminium superstructure with no mechanical fasteners,” says de Basto. Adding all of its windows and doors, the yacht carries about 22 tonnes of exterior glass, made by German glass maker TILSE, which developed a special sealant and glue that had to be approved by Lloyd’s. “Elaborate calculations were made to assess the interaction between glue, superstructure and glass, and to see the relative movement in a seaway to make sure the glue would be able to cope,” says Oceanco.

From a purely engineering point of view, this required a massive amount of work, which continued as construction began – once the concept had attracted the eye of a buyer.

The owners of the yacht that would eventually become DAR entrusted captain Klaudio Marcelic to make some inquiries on their behalf. The commercial team at Oceanco showed him the project they had been developing. Marcelic says he was attracted by the boat’s “clean and distinctive lines”, and in January 2014 he contacted Oceanco CEO Marcel Onkenhout. “Project Shark was outlined as we see it today from January to May and then presented to the client. The letter of intent was signed one month later,” Marcelic says.

A larger team, which now included the owner’s project manager and interior designer Valentina Zannier of Italian studio Nuvolari Lenard , went to work on fine tuning features to more precisely fit the owners’ requirements and ideas. All these needed to be incorporated within the design envelope that they really enjoyed, particularly, according to Oceanco, “the total black surface, the ‘hammerhead’ and the shark fin”.

Realising this smooth “total black” glass effect, so essential to the original design, was one of the greatest technical challenges. “The thickness of the glass varies with the location, but the heaviest is 30 millimetres and consists of three layers. In the superstructure above the main deck there are 186 windows. Of these windows, 112 are bent in one direction and 28 are double curved,” says Oceanco.

To create the look de Basto had designed, “the glass had to be in one flush surface from the main deck to the sundeck. To achieve this, a lot of special solutions had to be found, which included measuring the superstructure in 3D multiple times at different stages of the build,” says Martin de Jager, engineering project manager for Oceanco. “From this, a three-dimensional model was then developed that was used not only for the shape of every individual window but also for the thickness of the filler where painted surfaces adjoin the glass. Another challenge was where to route pipes and HVAC [heating, ventilation and air conditioning] ducts. With the large glass surfaces there was little room to place piping and ducting [near] the outside of the superstructure. Usually the underside of side decks can be used for ventilation grills. In the case of DAR [which has no walkarounds for the sake of privacy] this was not possible.”

Where did all the pipes and ducts go? “We’ve put them everywhere. If you open up the ceiling, it is completely full,” de Jager says. In spite of this, the ceiling height is never lower than 2.25 metres and reaches up to 2.4 metres in some areas.

Changes made to the original layout included the addition of a helideck and the relocation of the pool from one deck to another, a 1.6-metre-deep oval basin with a waterfall that retains its trajectory even as the yacht moves, a detail de Basto insisted upon. He designed all exterior decks, including folding carbon masts for umbrellas that complement the contours of the yacht when they are stored, and a huge sofa that seems to hover above the deck as it spins on a small axis to the sitter’s desired position.

The owner’s deck includes a completely private spa pool flanked by windows that reveal the world to the owners, but not the owners to the world.

Although two designers handled the treatment of the exterior and interior decks, the overall feeling remains surprisingly cohesive and relaxing throughout. The theme of nature, represented by the shark, continues inside. “The client brief was to have a comfortable, light and very bright interior, with no dark timbers and inspired by nature,” Zannier says.

Motifs of fish, leaves, olive trees, blossoms and waves are cleverly integrated in a wide variety of materials, from paint to plaster, carved leather, engraved glass and embroideries. Linen is used in an unusual way, substituted for joinery on doors and drawers. Wood is used sparingly and when it is, it is mainly light-hued timber with an unusual finish, sycamore dyed grey, maple veneer steamed and bent into curves to form a floor detail, a little dark veneer used to contrast with limed ash.

Zannier says she is particularly fond of the staircase that wraps around the lift, which is finished in antiqued bronze – buttons and control panel included – and features a decorative glass panel as flooring. Along the wall a school of fish in Venetian plaster winds its way up the stairs, one of several pieces made by DKT Artworks . Tiny details are everywhere, including drops of resin mimicking water droplets on a window sill.

It all looks so effortlessly elegant. However, “with 120 different fabrics, 24 saddle leathers and a variety of artistic finishes and glass the interior was very complex to execute,” says Oceanco. The task of outfitting this intricate interior went to List General Contractor and Sinnex .

On the technical side, the yacht is just as impressive, fitted with a full Dynamic Positioning system and a classed integrated bridge. Its enormous garage accommodates a pair of 10.5-metre custom tenders, one open and the other a limo, built by Hodgdon Yachts in Maine.

The long foredeck conceals crew tenders and a telescopic mast, and is large enough for a helicopter to land and take off. The owners did not want teak, and de Basto opted for a grey paint that is cohesive with the overall colour scheme and does not create glare. The yacht also carries a built-in slide that deploys for a vertiginous drop from on high.

This enormous project now complete, de Basto delights in sharing the details. “I am glad to see it built and so close to the original sketches. That is amazing because of the many pressures any design of this size is subjected to from all sides during the construction process. Those pressures can derail an innovative, non-conventional design very quickly,” he says. When he walked on to the yacht for the first time, de Basto says it was like he was entering his sketch. It’s a grand design that has become an even grander reality.

“There’s the pleasure derived from beauty - beautiful things alone can save us. There’s no explicit functionality which can show the way to project design related decision making. What moves everything is passion for beauty. This is the sexiest thing about the boat taken as an object which really makes it very different to houses, paintings, or other forms of art. The chance to put your boat object you have fallen in love with on show for all to see. It’s a near perverted aspect of wanting to share your very own passion with someone else. Boats can be shown off anywhere. And moreover you sleep inside her, you cruise in beautiful places with her and having style you probably enjoy better interiors than you have at home. DAR Yacht – Exceptional $175M Superyacht

Launched in 2018, DAR yacht is everything a luxury yacht needs to be. With an aggressive-looking exterior and a modern, spacious interior, she brings her guests close to nature with her many windows and glass features.

DAR yacht interior

With floor-to-ceiling windows, the Dar yacht can give its guests a great view of the outside world at any time. Designed by Nuvolari Lenard, the interior has some interesting features throughout.

There are underwater lights placed inside, and the owner specifically requested that no dark wood would be used in the interior design.

Instead, a blend of sycamore fiddleback and maple bleached grey was used, and to bring everything together, the details were made using Brazilian Caballo wood.

There are even more details throughout the yacht, with 3D-cut leather and 3D-lacquer in the living spaces.

The idea was to bring nature as the main source of inspiration. Light colors and timber help bring the look together.

Guests can find motifs of leaves, fish, and other things from nature featured throughout the yacht.

Specifications

The Dar yacht is 90 meters (295,3 ft) long and was built by Oceanco. Her beam is 14,6 meters (47,10 ft) and the draft reaches 3,95 meters (12,11 ft) in length.

Her top speed is 20 knots, her cruising speed is 8 knots, and she’s powered by twin diesel MTU (20V 4000 M73L) 20-cylinder 4,828hp engines.

She has the capacity to keep up to 14 guests in the seven suits available, and a crew of 31.

dar yacht back

The Dar yacht has an exterior that’s almost futuristic in its design. Behind it, all is Luiz de Basto Designs, and the thought behind the exterior design was to make her look a bit like a shark.

A hammerhead shark, to be exact. This can be seen in the shape of the wing stations, for example.

The glass features on the Dar yacht are extensive. The exterior glass alone weighs about 22 tonnes, and there is a total of 390 square feet of glass on board. The black parts of the exterior are mostly made up of glass as well.

The owner’s private deck has been designed to be just that – private. He can look out at the world, but the world can’t look back in through the windows.

Yacht of the Week: M/Y DAR

By Catriona Cherrie

The editorial team at Superyachts.com is proud to introduce a new feature series called Yacht of the Week. It is an opportunity to exhibit a superyacht we feel to be particularly noteworthy, whether for her stunning exterior, interior, technology or pioneering qualities.

This week our focus is M/Y DAR , previously known as Project Shark — a strikingly modern 90-metre superyacht that was launched and delivered to her owners this summer by Dutch shipyard Oceanco .

This build has caught our eye because of her superb exterior design from Miami-based designer Luiz de Basto . Standout features include her monolithic reflective glass panelling that flows down through the decks, and a distinctive black and white colour scheme. DAR is a call back to the hay-days of Alfa Nero with a bold, futuristic style that echoes true custom design evolution.

DAR’s profile is long and sleek, giving it the impression of being lean and powerful in similarity to that of a shark’s body. Even the mast on top of the yacht has been designed to resemble a shark’s fin, a very contemporary detail.

This came after the initial design was noticed to resemble a hammerhead shark when viewed from above, and the design team decided to run with that vision. The long design has lent itself to the sprawling beach club area, where de Basto has managed to incorporate a dive centre, sauna, submarine storage and hammam.

“The profile has a unique sense of contrast and homogeneity between the dark glass and the white balconies, providing a constant exchange in shape and lines between the two elements,” says DeBasto.  “My initial drawings may have looked like a futuristic concept, yet she is now a very real yacht on account of the execution made possible by the advanced technology of the Oceanco engineering team and by the vision of her experienced owner and his team.”

De Basto has designed the entire upper deck without walkaround access to ensure complete privacy for the owners, to whom the entire deck is dedicated, including a private forward-facing Jacuzzi. The vast use of black tinted glass offers glorious panoramic floor-to-ceiling views of the marine environment to the aft, port and starboard. The huge windows will also ensure that the yacht is flooded with light from all angles, creating light, bright spaces.

Little is known about the interior design by Nuvolari & Lenard , but it is said to echo the exterior with the interior woods providing stark contrast to the dark exterior. The owners insisted on the use of light woods, opting for different shades of sycamore fiddleback, small details in Brazilian carballo wood and use of grey-bleached maple. Other accents include bas-reliefs, metallic surfaces and 3D leather lacquers.

The tasteful combination of bespoke finishes brings the interior masterfully together with the exterior to create a seamless transition from one to the other to maximise the connection to the outdoors.

Yacht of the Week will return next week with another in-depth exploration of an extraordinary superyacht.

"The profile has a unique sense of contrast and homogeneity between the dark glass and the white balconies, providing a constant exchange in shape and lines between the two elements... My initial drawings may have looked like a futuristic concept, yet she is now a very real yacht." Luiz DeBasto

Dar - Yacht for Charter

From €1,200,000 EUR

  • Builder Oceanco
  • Length 90m (295ft)

The exceptional 90-metre Oceanco superyacht DAR is available for charter since the summer of 2023.

She offers next-level luxury and unrivalled privacy, thanks to her specially designed glazing that stops people from looking in.

Interior design & engineering

The use of glass on the DAR motor yacht is one of its most breathtaking features. The full-height glass wall in the upper salon offers uninterrupted vistas, yet it’s impossible for anyone to see through it—even with the lights on. It connects the interior and exterior world without sacrificing your privacy.

The Nuvolari & Lenard-designed interior is finished in a cream and white palette, creating spaces that feel airy and bright. The main deck of this luxury superyacht hosts a large lounge with a bar, games area and TV screen and leads to a separate formal dining room with a rounded table that seats 18.

You and 11 guests will be accommodated across seven cabins during your DAR yacht charter. Instead of a suite, you get a whole master deck that boasts a totally private spa pool surrounded by sun pads and obscured from the outside by the special privacy glass and lack of cameras. There’s also a salon forward, a 360-rotating sofa aft, and an en suite with a spa tub that gives you panoramic views while you bathe. The rest of the party will sleep forward on the main deck across two VIPS and four doubles.

Yacht facilities & Entertainment

The DAR yacht offers lots to keep you entertained during your charter. There’s an open-air freshwater pool with a counter-current that’s raised to keep children safe. The area is filled with long chairs and sofas for lounging in the sun and has an aft staircase that leads straight down to the beach club. Amidship sits an alfresco dining table that’s shaded by the deck above.

There’s also a Hammam, sauna and massage/therapy room on the DAR yacht, as well as a gym filled with Technogym equipment and floor-to-ceiling windows. You can quickly move between the three floors with the elevator.

The sky lounge is home to a sit-up bar and a cinema with its own library of more than 1,300 films and TV shows.

Toys and crew

Your DAR yacht charter will be overseen by a crew of 31.

An RYA-approved water centre, there’s no shortage of ways to enjoy the ocean with DAR. You can throw on the scuba diving gear or snorkel to explore the underwater world or race across it on one of the many inflatable towables like the banana or donut and beyond.

There are plenty of speedy toys to try, from waverunners to kitesurfs, waterskis, wakeboards, and more. You can even slide from the master deck straight into the blue or walk on water with the zorb and floating magic carpet.

When you want to head ashore, multiple tenders can take you there—and a relaxing lobby or beach club for you to wait in.

DAR Yacht for Charter

If you’re looking for the ultimate in luxury and privacy, look no further than the multi-award-winning 295.3' (90m) DAR. Constructed by powerhouse Dutch superyacht builders Oceanco in 2018, this exceptional yacht features seamless black glass that encases the superstructure allowing for uninterrupted views while at the same time protecting guests from prying eyes.

Nature-inspired Design

Designer Luiz De Basto took inspiration from hammerhead sharks in creating DAR’s aggressive yet streamlined exterior, while the light, bright, nature-themed interiors are the work of Valentina Zannier of Italian studio Nuvolari Lenard and take advantage of the floor-to-ceiling windows throughout. Motifs of fish, leaves, olive trees, blossoms and waves are cleverly integrated into a wide variety of materials, from paint to plaster, carved leather, engraved glass and embroideries. Linen is used in an unusual way, substituted for joinery on doors and drawers. In keeping with the yacht owner’s wishes, wood is used sparingly and when it is, it is mainly light-hued timber with an unusual finish, sycamore dyed grey, maple veneer steamed and bent into curves, a little dark veneer used to contrast with limed ash. A school of fish in Venetian plaster swims along the walls up the central staircase and around the glass elevator—one of many playful elements created by DKT Artworks.

Stunning Interiors

DAR’s main deck provides immaculate spaces for lounging, fine dining, or simply relaxing with a perfectly mixed cocktail at the bar or at the games table. There is also a gym surrounded by windows providing incredible sea views and a spa with a hammam, sauna and treatment room.

A more intimate atmosphere can be found in the skylounge, which showcases a sit-up bar and a cinema boasting a library of over 1,300 films and TV programs. A wall of glass offers the best views on board while, at the same time, the innovative design ensures complete privacy to the outside world.

Plush Accommodations

A soft palette of cream and light grey enhances the sense of calm and relaxation for up to 12 guests in DAR’s seven luxurious staterooms. The spectacular Master deck features a completely private spa pool flanked by windows that reveal the world to the guests but not the guests to the world. There is also a salon on the aft deck with a sofa that can be spun 360 degrees to the sitter’s desired position.
