Anti-poaching ship M/V John Paul DeJoria christened in Miami with a bottle of Patron

That’s a first, even for Miami

The M/V John Paul Dejoria, named after the billionaire businessman and philanthropist, was unveiled in Miami last week at the Epic Marina, becoming the first ship to be christened with a bottle of tequila over the bow from the Dejoria-owned Patron Spirits Co.

The 110-foot Island-class fast patrol boat was launched by the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, the direct-action marine conservation non-profit featured on Animal Planet’s Whale Wars and Ocean Warriors.

Dejoria, co-founder of Paul Mitchell hair products, is a longtime supporter and hosted the event with Sea Shepherd CEO Captain Paul Watson.

“We are proud to launch a new ship and proud to have it bear the name of John Paul DeJoria,” Captain Watson said. “This ship’s mission is to save the lives of sharks, whales, dolphins, turtles and all other species in the sea being ruthlessly and illegally killed by poachers. John Paul has a passion for life and for conservation that will be reflected in the future actions of this fast-long range patrol vessel.”

“From the top of the highest mountain to the bottom of our deepest sea, all of earth’s creatures deserve to thrive, not barely survive,” added DeJoria.

The vessel is a former U.S. Coast Guard patrol boat and first joined Sea Shepherd’s fleet a couple of years ago under a different name and paint job. Its first task will be an anti-shark finning mission, per the press release.

It’s currently docked at the slip at Museum Park by American Airlines Arena.

Sea Shepherd Vessel John Paul DeJoria Arrives in Dominica

PORTSMOUTH, Dominica – June 2, 2021  – Sea Shepherd is pleased to announce that one of our vessels,  John Paul DeJoria , has arrived in the harbor of Portsmouth, Dominica. The ship and its crew will quarantine for seven days prior to reconnecting with the people of this island nation.

Dominica is known as the Nature Isle of the Caribbean. Its lush tropical shores and surrounding waters are home to an abundance of wildlife. Sea Shepherd looks forward to meeting with the government of Dominica to discuss further opportunities to work together toward our common conservation aims.

Sea Shepherd has a long history of working with the people and government of Dominica. In September 2017, Sea Shepherd arrived on the shores of Dominica just days after Hurricanes Irma and Maria, bringing much-needed supplies and support to the survivors of two of the most powerful storms in the island nation’s history. Sea Shepherd returned to Dominica to provide additional aid and resources in January 2018.

John Paul Dejoria likes to hit the road in his 1957 Chevy Bel Air and ride the tracks in his private 1927 American Car and Foundry Company railcar. So when the owner of Paul Mitchell Hair Systems and the Patrón Spirits Company (see “The Robb Reader,” page 144) decided it was time for a boat, he limited his search to another American classic. “He wanted a Chris-Craft Constellation,” says Chris Shaffer, co-owner of the Los Angeles boat-restoration company Shaffer Design Group. “That’s what the Kennedys had. It’s what Sinatra had. It’s what Elvis had.”

To acquire this slice of Americana, DeJoria turned to Shaffer and his brother, Bill, who have been restoring boats since they were boys. “My dad was a big-time sailor,” Chris says. “So he was always buying these funky old boats, and they would end up in our backyard. We would do all the scraping, painting, and varnishing. We probably stripped 100 engines together over the years. It was how we bonded with our dad.”

The Shaffers began restoring boats professionally in the 1970s, as Pacific Blue Water Marine. (They changed the name to Shaffer Design Group in 2009.) The brothers have known DeJoria since the 1980s, and, in addition to running their restoration business, they both now work for him: Bill heads Patrón’s Los Angeles–based public-relations efforts, and Chris is involved with much of the entrepreneur’s nonprofit work.

DeJoria first approached the Shaffers about the Chris-Craft in 2009. The brothers, who refit vessels ranging from 40-foot sportfishers to 300-foot yachts, soon found a 57-foot example of the boat, which was known as the Connie. Chris-Craft produced hundreds of Connies between 1955 and 1972, but this specific boat, from 1968, was unique. “As far as we know, this is the last big mahogany Chris-Craft ever built,” DeJoria says. “And it was actually built for the owner of Chris-Craft.”

The double-planked mahogany hull remained in good condition, but the rest of the boat required a complete refit. The Shaffers went to work alongside DeJoria; his now 15-year-old son, John Anthony; and a team of engineers, electricians, woodworkers, and other design and boating veterans that included interior designer Penny Shaffer of Walton Street Design.

Completed last April, the 18-month restoration entailed everything from modernizing safety equipment and entertainment systems to replacing the worn wood of the main deck, house deck, and flybridge with Burmese teak (which DeJoria and his son selected and helped sand and varnish). The Shaffers’ extensive use of mahogany and cocobolo woods, handstitched leathers, and stainless steel enhances the Constellation’s vintage appeal.

Christened Pyrat after Patrón Spirits’ premium rum brand, the restored Constellation reflects DeJoria’s taste for the classics. “This is a one-of-a-kind heirloom yacht,” Chris says. “It will be enjoyed for many years to come and passed down from generation to generation as a DeJoria family treasure.”

Dallas billionaire Jerry Jones isn’t the only wealthy Texan who belongs to the yacht club. Other millionaires and billionaires from the Lone Star State are in the same luxury boat.

The Cowboys owner recently coughed up an estimated $250 million for a 357-foot superyacht — nearly as long as the football field at AT&T Stadium. Jones’ vessel, Bravo Eugenia , appears to be the most valuable yacht owned by a Texas resident, research shows. In fact, Bravo Eugenia now easily ranks among the most expensive yachts in the world .

Despite the stratospheric value of Jones’ boat, it’s definitely not the only yacht making waves among Texas’ rich and famous. Here’s a look at super swanky megayachts owned by six of Jones’ wealthy counterparts in the Lone Star State.

Note: Our findings are based on various media reports. It's unclear whether some of these yachts remain anchored at the docks of the listed owners, but no reports could be found that indicate they’ve sailed away to new owners.

Carl Allen Dallas millionaire, trash-bag magnate, private investor, environmental warrior Yacht: Gigi (named after owner’s wife) Estimated value: $40 million (yacht only) Length: 164 feet Amenities: Six guest cabins, two outdoor bars, port-side balcony, Jacuzzi, elevator. Other craft in Allen’s fleet are an Icon A5 seaplane; the 180-foot support vessel Axis , complete with a deep fryer and smoker grill; a 52-foot powerboat, Frigate ; and a Triton deep-sea submersible submarine. Description: The design of the yacht provides “an interior with [a] somewhat traditional yet crisp style, while [the] slightly contemporary exterior features create an impressive, exclusive resort appeal on all decks.” Quotable: “ Gigi is a true note of sophistication in yachting.” Noteworthy: When not in use, Allen’s yacht and the rest of his armada are kept at Walker’s Cay , a Bahamian island that he purchased in 2018. Gigi can be chartered for around $225,000 a week.

Doug Barnes Dallas millionaire, founder and owner of Eyemart Express eyewear chain Yacht: Azzurra II (formerly Neninka II ) Estimated value: $20 million Length: 156 feet Amenities: Five guest cabins, including master suite with 21 large windows and private sundeck; six-person Jacuzzi; gym; gas grill; outdoor theater; 10-seat formal dining area Description: Azzurra II is “a modern and luxuriously appointed superyacht .” Quotable: “ Azzurra II is kept in meticulous condition by her [owner] and has been continuously upgraded.” Noteworthy: Azzurra II can be chartered for an estimated $181,500 per week (low season) or an estimated $210,000 per week (high season), plus expenses. The yacht is a certified dive boat.

Charles Butt ​ San Antonio billionaire, chairman and CEO of family-owned H-E-B grocery chain Yacht: Rebecca Estimated value: $15 million Length: 139 feet Amenities: Cabins with room for about a dozen guests and crew members Description: Rebecca is said to be “one of the finest-looking modern sailing yachts in the world.” Quotable: The yacht is “certainly everything and more than I ever dreamed of when I started the project,” Butt says . “I appreciate greatly the time and painstaking care … put into creating Rebecca .” Noteworthy: With Rebecca , Butt sought to “combine all of the best elements of yachts from the mid-19th century to the modern day, in a stylish, eye-catching yacht which would give high performance under sail.”

That’s just a way to get somewhere. The Rockets aren’t a toy, either. It’s big business that I paid $2 billion for! I guess I’ll say my yacht. I like it a lot. I’m on my fifth one and building my sixth one.” Noteworthy: While growing up in Galveston, Fertitta dreamed of owning a yacht.

This is the coolest boat.” Noteworthy: Another vessel associated with DeJoria — the M/V John Paul DeJoria (an anti-poaching boat operated by the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society) — was the first ship to ever be christened with a bottle of Patrón tequila.

Acm awards news, country star parker mccollum to headline 2024 acm awards benefit in the colony.

The ACM Awards will make Dallas-Fort Worth a country music mecca for the second year in a row when they arrive in May . Among the many Awards-adjacent events will be the ACM Lifting Lives LIVE benefit show, headlined by Texan Parker McCollum .

Officially called "Parker McCollum and Friends: ACM Lifting Lives LIVE, Presented by Choctaw Casinos & Resorts," the concert, a release says, "will raise money and awareness for ACM Lifting Lives, which works to improve lives through the power of music with a specific focus on health-related initiatives that use music therapy as a way of healing."

The show will take place on the golfing green at Topgolf in The Colony on May 15, the night before the 59th ACM Awards at The Star in Frisco. (Also exactly a month before McCollum takes the stage in College Station with another Texan, country icon George Strait.)

Fans might remember that the ACM Lifting Lives benefit was the event that Morgan Wallen was slated to headline in 2023; he had to cancel due to illness the day before and was replaced by Jason Aldean . Also taking the stage for the sold-out show were HARDY, Lainey Wilson, ERNEST, Bailey Zimmerman, and DJ 13lackbeard.

Additional performers for the 2024 edition will be announced in the coming weeks, organizers say.

"I am truly honored that ACM Lifting Lives has given me the opportunity to host the Parker McCollum & Friends: ACM Lifting Lives event this year at Topgolf in The Colony, TX,” McCollum says in the release. “The work they do to improve lives through the power of music and the funds they raise are vital to helping folks in and out of our country music community. I can't wait to have some of my really talented friends join me for a great night supporting the mission of ACM Lifting Lives and help them continue their incredible work."

General admission tickets on the green will be available to ACM Members, ACM A-List subscribers , 59th ACM Awards ticket holders, and Topgolf Friends and Family through an exclusive presale starting Thursday, March 21 at 10 am. Remaining tickets will be available for a general public on-sale, beginning Friday, March 22 at 10 am, through ACMLiftingLives.org/Concert . Tickets are $150.

All proceeds will go to ACM Lifting Lives, whose beneficiaries include the ACM Lifting Lives Autism Lab at Vanderbilt Kennedy Center and their annual Music Camp for individuals with Williams syndrome. The nonprofit also gives to various organizations that provide mental health support for the country music community, the release says.

McCollum, a native of Conroe outside Houston, earned his first ACM Award for New Male Artist of the Year at the 2022 ACM Awards. He also won “Breakthrough Video of the Year” (a fully fan-voted honor) at the 2022 CMT Music Awards and earned two back-to-back CMA Awards nominations (2022 & 2023) for New Artist of the Year. He made his RodeoHouston debut as the Opening Day act in 2023.

He's currently on the road for a 41-date "Burn it Down" tour in support of his latest album, Never Enough .

“We have been massive fans of Parker for years, and we couldn’t be more excited that he chose to volunteer his time to help us raise money and awareness in his home state, says ACM Lifting Lives Executive Director Lyndsay Cruz in the release. Poachers Shoot Down Sea Shepherd Drone

During the night of December 24th, the M/V John Paul DeJoria was patrolling for poachers when they observed suspicious activity on the radar. The night vision drone was flown to investigate the targets. While recording, our crew noted that one poacher on board was holding a firearm. In an act of unprecedented violence, the poacher then fired over 20 shots at the drone, destroying it.

Poachers Chased out of Refuge/Record Number of Nets Pulled

Undeterred by the shooting of the drone, our crew continue to patrol the waters of the vaquita refuge. Just a few days following, our ship, in conjunction with the Mexican Navy, successfully chased a fleet of poachers out, protecting the vaquita for another night. They also removed 13 nets within 24 hours, a record high number of nets pulled in a single day.

Crew Saves Endangered Totoaba Following Second Drone Shooting

On December 30th, crew on the M/V John Paul DeJoria located a fishing boat participating in suspicious activity. Sending the drone to investigate, the crew identified that the fishermen were pulling illegal gillnets. As with earlier the previous week, a fishermen fired a handgun at the drone six times. After contacting the Mexican Navy, who pursued the vessel, the M/V John Paul DeJoria headed to the location of the net, where they found a live entangled totoaba. The crew saved the totoaba, marking a victory for the species and a loss to the poachers.

Marquis Yachts has signed a definitive agreement with VanDutch Marine to build all of their yachts sold around the world. The agreement goes into effect immediately, with production starting at the Marquis factory in Pulaski, Wisconsin, USA , this month. Marquis will construct all of the VanDutch yacht models, comprising their VanDutch 30′ , VanDutch 40′ , 40′ Walk-Around, 55′, as well as its new 45′ & motor yacht VanDutch 70′ , to be launched globally in the first quarter of next year.

Robert VanGrunsven, President of Marquis, stated, “We are extremely pleased and honored that VanDutch has chosen Marquis to become its exclusive manufacturer for all of their prestigious yacht requirements at our Pulaski, Wisconsin facilities. With this new additional business, Marquis will immediately begin to hire up to an additional 70 employees that will ultimately expand to approximately 150 employees in the near future.”

• John Paul DeJoria

John Paul Jones DeJoria is an entrepreneur and philanthropist; who is well known for his Paul Mitchell hair products . He is also the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of The Patron Spirits Company . The billionaire has a net worth of $4 billion.

DeJoria was born on 13 th April 1944 in Echo Park, Los Angeles, California. His parents got divorced when he was two and at nine years of age he was selling newspapers and cards in order to support his family. DeJoria attended Atwater Elementary and then John Marshall High School. His mother could not support both her children so she had to send them to a foster home. As a teenager he got involved in some street gang activities but he decided to change his path after being advised by a teacher at school. In 1962 after he graduated from high school, he joined the Navy where he spent two years.

To make ends meet DeJoria did many jobs including being a janitor to selling insurance. He got a job at Redken Laboratories and this was the beginning of his entrepreneurial success. He was eventually fired from this job after a disagreement over some of the business policies. He co-founded John Paul Mitchell Systems with the hairdresser Paul Mitchell in 1980. He took a loan of 700 dollars for the start-up. John Paul DeJoria also owns seventy percent of The Patrons Spirits Company which is a world famous tequila brand. He co-founded the company in 1989. It sold more than 2,450,000 cases in 2011. He is also a founding member of the nightclub chain House of Blues and has interests in Ultimat Vodka , Pyrat Rum , Sun King Solar , Solar Utility, Three Star Energy, Touchstone Natural Gas, Diamond Audio , ROK AMERICAS , John Paul Pet, a diamond company, J&D Acquisitions LLC, Larson’s parent company, Triumph, Striper, a Harley-Davidson dealership, Carver and Marquis Yachts.

John Paul DeJoria is also an actor and producer in the film industry. He made an appearance in the 2008 comedy movie ‘You Don’t Mess with the Zohan’ and in ‘The Big Tease’ in which he played his former business partner Paul Mitchell. He also made an appearance in the season two of the TV series ‘Weeds’. He also acted and narrated in the television commercial of Patron in 2011. In 2012 he displayed his support of Captain Paul Watson of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society through a video release. DeJoria also supports Food4Africa . He joined Nelson Mandela in Africa to help feed more than seventeen thousand orphan children. His company Paul Mitchell also provided food for more than 400000 poor children.

This once homeless billionaire is today inducted in the esteemed Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans.  His rule of life is ‘Success unshared is failure’ and this policy can be seen throughout his company. His employees are very happy to work with him. He has maintained such a friendly work environment and paychecks far more than what the market normally offers. Today the hero of this ‘rags to riches story’ has come a long way. He lives with his wife and six children in their Austin home.
