BALISTA has a stunning interior. Offering a welcoming ambiance, the interior is adorned with beautiful Italian woodwork, stunning marble, and plush furnishings with a cool leather trim. Both the main salon and skylounge provide the perfect settings for hosting guests and unwinding. If seeking a private escape, the fold-out balconies off the skylounge are ideal. With sliding Asian inspired doors, the balconies also blur the lines between inside and out.

BALISTA accommodates up to 14 guests in seven staterooms. The main deck master suite is beautifully decorated and features a king-size bed, private office and his-and-hers en-suite baths. The VIP stateroom offers versatility; it can either be a full-beam stateroom with a lounge or converted to two staterooms. The yacht also has two double-bed staterooms and two twin-bed staterooms.

BALISTA's vast outdoor living spaces offer options for alfresco dining and lounging. The sundeck features sun loungers aft, a Jacuzzi in the middle and U-shaped seating under umbrellas and a bar forward. On the skylounge aft is alfresco dining and lounging. The yacht’s main deck aft has another lounging area.

The luxury yacht has low original hours and had her generators rebuilt in 2019.

Description

FOCUS is a 153-foot (46.6m) North American Yachts originally built as Genesis. Designed by Luiz De Basto, she was built in aluminum by North American Yachts and Shipbuilders and delivered in 2002 to a disabled client and has wheelchair access throughout. An interior by Ralph Lauren Home uses African makore mahogany and Tuscan marble throughout the yacht.

FOCUS has a unique, partially enclosed sundeck, her forward sun deck is fully enclosed and is flanked by windows that provide 270-degree views. The aft, exterior sun deck features a Jacuzzi and plentiful sunning space.

Built with an aluminium hull and aluminium superstructure, with teak decks, she benefits from a semi-displacement hull to provide exceptional seakeeping and impressive speeds. Powered by twin diesel Caterpillar (3512B) 12-cylinder 2,250hp engines running at 1925rpm, she comfortably cruises at 12 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 18 knots with a range of up to 5,000 nautical miles from her 21,496 gallon fuel tanks at 13 knots. An advanced stabilisation system on board promises exceptional comfort levels at anchor or on any voyage. Her water tanks store around 2,977 gallons of fresh water. FOCUS can accommodate 10 guests in five cabins consisting of a bridge deck master suite with its own deck, two VIP suites and three twins, all with entertainment centers and en-suite bathroom facilities.

The master is located on the upper deck aft and features a large king-size bed in the center of the space. An automatic privacy screen can be raised behind the bed, blocking views from the entrance, for additional discretion. Eight large vertical windows surround the master and provide 270-degree views. It also has his-and-hers en-suite bathrooms to port and starboard forward. The port bathroom is fully customized for handicapped accessibility. The master also features a private aft deck with a seating banquette; this is an ideal space to enjoy morning coffee or an evening cocktail.

Four additional staterooms, two twins and two VIPs with queen-size beds, are located on the lower deck. A Closer Look at the 153-Foot MC155 Trimaran

In 2018, Mark Evans, the CEO of McConaghy Boats, told Aero Yacht that he loves challenges and creating something he can be proud of is the best part of his job. By then, the project he felt was the most significant accomplishment was the Adastra , the first 140-foot all-composite super-slender trimaran the company had ever built. It was completed in 2012, taking about four years to conceptualize and another four years to construct. Evans is now ready to unleash another outstanding achievement ̶ the 153-foot MC155 trimaran listed for $26.5 million. Here is a closer look at the superyacht .

It Was Conceptualized in 2017

On August 10, 2017 , Boat International published that Design Unlimited, a British studio, had released concept details of a yacht that would be developed in collaboration with McConaghy Boats and Mani Frers. According to the article, the vessel would be built as per the MLC (Maritime Labor Convention) and LY3 regulations. The MLC regulations apply to warships and naval auxiliaries, traditional ships, fishing vessels, and ships navigating sheltered waters. The LY3, on the other hand, applies to large yachts that are 24m or longer; the vessels also should engage in commercial use, carry no cargo, and have a maximum of 12 passengers. The MC155 falls under the LY3 code because its accommodation is meant for a maximum of nine passengers housed in four cabins and a crew quarters that can accommodate six people. The collaboration among the three meant that while Design Unlimited would provide interior décor, Frers would be responsible for exterior styling and all aspects of naval architecture; the construction was left to McConaghy Boats.

According to Yacht Harbour , by the time the concept details were released, the design had undergone extensive changes. Pure Design was also set to handle composite engineering while DNVGL had made a peer-review regarding the yacht's sea-keeping qualities. With the concept already finished, they were ready to start production although other sources reported that construction would begin upon contract. In August 2019, the International Institute of Marine Surveying revealed few more details concerning the project. According to IIMS, the project was in progress. Since pre-engineering, tank testing, and interior designing were complete, the yacht had been listed for sale with Camper and Nicholsons for $26.5 million. As per the tank test results from the Potsdam facility in Germany, the superyacht was anticipated to exceed expectations regarding its roll, pitch, and hydrodynamic resistance. The preliminary results also showed that the MC155 could deliver a top speed of 24 knots and cruise at 14 knots with a maximum range of 2,500 nautical miles. Furthermore, the performance would equal that of a 23m monohull.

What Has Changed Since 2017?

Given the immense work already put in the project, you could feel the disappointment in Evans's statement when he told Robb Report that the buyer who commissioned the yacht pulled out when his business changed. According to the CEO, MC155 is more than a concept. He explained that they invested heavily during the developmental stages, and the original plans had been put in place since 2019. He added that they had done most of the work after spending two years in engineering and designing. Now all that remains is bringing the concept into reality, a process that could take at most two years. Besides the buyer pulling out, there have been other changes. For instance, while before it was expected to deliver a range of 2,500 nautical miles at cruising speed, they now claim that the MC155 will deliver over 4,500 nautical miles over the 14mph cruising speed. Additionally, the top speed that had been said to be 24 knots has now changed to 35 knots. Despite the changes, one thing that has remained constant is the efficiency and hydrodynamic resistance. Evans proudly insisted that the drag coefficient in the MC155 is so low that the running costs can only compare to a monohull half the size. He added that even when compared to a similar-sized yacht, the MC155 would still be efficient in running costs, speed, and fuel. The MC155 is so efficient in fuel usage that it can cross the entire Atlantic Ocean on a single fuel tank.

Its Features

Frers' concept is for the upper deck to have the owner's suite fit for royalty; it, therefore, will have walk-in closets, a private gym, a lounge area, and an en-suite bathroom. The amenities in this master bedroom have a 180-degree view of the horizon. It would not be a princely owner's suite without a touch-and-go helipad on the private deck space accessible via sliding glass doors. It is important to note that the yacht utilizes loads of heat reflective glass that ensures the guests will enjoy natural light without being roasted, especially when cruising in the summer temperatures. The main deck is dedicated to lounging and dining, and on it are a Jacuzzi pool, sun loungers, sofas, and a cocktail bar. These are all on the 11.3m beam, and the owner can decide to close off the interior space for a more formal or private area.

Evans remarked that the 36-foot beam makes finding space in a marina easy. The main hull is below deck and comprises three large en-suite cabins. The port hull is very spacious, while the slender outer hulls have enough room to store nautical toys. The tenders are also deployed from the outer hull, with the starboard hull opening being spacious enough to fit two jet skis , paddleboards, and kayaks. While all these features are in the concept, Evans disclosed that the future owner could customize the finer details and interior fixtures and fittings to desired taste. For instance, the McConaghy Boats CEO said that even if the yacht has enough power, the owner can promote environmentally friendly methods such as using electric or battery-powered systems that facilitate zero emissions.

FOCUS can accommodate 10 guests in five cabins consisting of a bridge deck master suite with its own deck, two VIP suites and three twins, all with entertainment centers and en-suite bathroom facilities.

The master is located on the upper deck aft and features a large king-size bed in the center of the space. An automatic privacy screen can be raised behind the bed, blocking views from the entrance, for additional discretion. Eight large vertical windows surround the master and provide 270-degree views. It also has his-and-hers en-suite bathrooms to port and starboard forward. The port bathroom is fully customized for handicapped accessibility. The master also features a private aft deck with a seating banquette; this is an ideal space to enjoy morning coffee or an evening cocktail.

Four additional staterooms, two twins and two VIPs with queen-size beds, are located on the lower deck. All have en-suite bathrooms; the port twin and queen have luxurious bathtubs and the starboard staterooms have floor to ceiling glass showers. The starboard queen also has private access to the elevator.

FOCUS is a 153-foot (46.6m) North American Yachts originally built as Genesis. Designed by Luiz De Basto, she was built in aluminum by North American Yachts and Shipbuilders and delivered in 2002 to a disabled client and has wheelchair access throughout. An interior by Ralph Lauren Home uses African makore mahogany and Tuscan marble throughout the yacht.

FOCUS has a unique, partially enclosed sundeck, her forward sun deck is fully enclosed and is flanked by windows that provide 270-degree views. The aft, exterior sun deck features a Jacuzzi and plentiful sunning space.

Built with an aluminium hull and aluminium superstructure, with teak decks, she benefits from a semi-displacement hull to provide exceptional seakeeping and impressive speeds. Powered by twin diesel Caterpillar (3512B) 12-cylinder 2,250hp engines running at 1925rpm, she comfortably cruises at 12 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 18 knots with a range of up to 5,000 nautical miles from her 21,496 gallon fuel tanks at 13 knots. An advanced stabilisation system on board promises exceptional comfort levels at anchor or on any voyage. Her water tanks store around 2,977 gallons of fresh water. She was built to ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) ✠A1, Yachting Service, AMS classification society rules, and is MCA Compliant.

FOCUS can accommodate 10 guests in five cabins consisting of a bridge deck master suite with its own deck, two VIP suites and three twins, all with entertainment centers and en-suite bathroom facilities.

The master is located on the upper deck aft and features a large king-size bed in the center of the space. An automatic privacy screen can be raised behind the bed, blocking views from the entrance, for additional discretion. Eight large vertical windows surround the master and provide 270-degree views. It also has his-and-hers en-suite bathrooms to port and starboard forward. The port bathroom is fully customized for handicapped accessibility. The master also features a private aft deck with a seating banquette; this is an ideal space to enjoy morning coffee or an evening cocktail.

Four additional staterooms, two twins and two VIPs with queen-size beds, are located on the lower deck. All have en-suite bathrooms; the port twin and queen have luxurious bathtubs and the starboard staterooms have floor to ceiling glass showers. The starboard queen also has private access to the elevator.

ASYA is a luxurious 153-foot (47m) displacement motor yacht, constructed by Heesen Yachts and delivered in 2015. ASYA boasts a sophisticated exterior design by Frank Laupman from Omega Architects and a first-class reputation for charters.

Roger Penske’s Feadship 153

I got my first hint of Roger Penske’s new 153-foot Feadship , Detroit Eagle , in mid-1998 when Penske’s captain, Marc Greichen, mentioned he was headed to Holland. He piqued my interest, but offered no details. Later that summer, as we cruised together toward Newport, Greichen acknowledged that Feadship was building a new boat for Penske. Again, he shared nothing further.

Industry rumors continued to whet my gearhead interest, but it was not until I visited Feadship’s De Vries yard in May 2000 that I got a full picture of this remarkable showcase of speed and power. Construction was well under way, with the metalwork largely completed, the propulsion package in place and systems installation proceeding quickly. The timing was fortuitous, for only in such an open condition can the incredible complexity of such a modern motoryacht be fully grasped.

Detroit Eagle is a mirror-perfect reflection of Penske’s life and career. He first found fame as a race driver, and later found fortune in business. Detroit Diesel Corporation, one of his many acquisitions, is now under the Daimler Chrysler corporate umbrella, but Penske is still involved with the company and its products. One is Detroit Eagle ‘s engines, which DDC developed with now-sister MTU.

Built entirely of aluminum, Detroit Eagle is powered by two of DDC/MTU’s largest marine diesels, the 16-cylinder 4000 series, which put out 3,650 hp each. The engines drive Lips fixed-pitch propellers partially recessed into tunnels. The tunnels have large fixed wedges at their after end to lift the stern and reduce running trim.

The diesels push the yacht to an easy, all-day cruise speed of 23 knots at 1850 rpm, but occasionally Penske wants a little more. That’s when the centerline surprise, a Lycoming TF-50 gas turbine, kicks in to contribute an additional 5,600 hp. For the combined diesel and gas turbine package, fuel burn at full power is nearly 750 gph. Long-range cruising at 14 knots consumes a much more reasonable 65 gph.

According to Greichen, turbine-boosted speed climbs to 32 knots when Detroit Eagle is fully loaded and approaches 35 knots in lighter conditions. That is not the 50-plus knots of some earlier turbine-powered pleasure craft, but Detroit Eagle is not a stripped-out speedboat masquerading as a yacht. Aluminum construction and cored joinery help reduce weight, but this is still a sizable yacht. She is fully outfitted with all the detail and quality for which Feadship is known, built for uncompromised cruising with an occasional burst of speed.

After Detroit Eagle ‘s completion, I visited her at New York’s Chelsea Piers and watched highly capable chief engineer Dave Wilder supervise refueling from a tank barge. The procedures for high-speed, high-volume fuel transfer at 50 psi rival those of a well-trained pit crew. Wilder connected and rechecked 2-inch Cam-Loc hose fittings and scupper plugs to ensure no diesel sheen would stain the decks or the water around Detroit Eagle .

Almost everything in the engineroom, other than the 16V4000 diesels and the TF-50 turbine, is behind removable white panels that sport a red-and-black racing stripe. The engines are bright red with a lot of polished stainless ducting, piping, railings and trim; the sole is jet black. Wilder keeps it all spotless, and the effect is just as intended: The engineroom is a breathtaking showcase for Penske’s DDC/MTU products and the company’s capabilities.

Greichen is an all-too-rare combination of expertise, personality and humility. I know firsthand how much of himself he put into Detroit Eagle ‘s design and construction, but his talk was of the contributions of Wilder and Dave Parry of Penske Power, who served as technical consultants for the machinery and its control and monitoring systems. Special mention also was made of supplier Cincinnati Gear, whose custom-built epicyclic gearbox, connecting the turbine to a Lips waterjet, has performed flawlessly.

It is not unusual for engines to be soft-mounted to limit noise and vibration transfer to the hull structure, but Detroit Eagle ‘s reduction gears are soft-mounted, as well. This is made possible by separate thrust bearings fitted abaft the gears. Hollow carbon-fiber shafting reduces weight forward of the tail shaft between the bearings, gears and engines. Resilient couplings at each point also help reduce vibration.

From the lathe-turned bulkhead panels on either side of the engineroom entrance to the details of the variable-geometry air intake on the turbine, there was just too much to absorb in the time allotted. There was a lot of dazzle, of course, but Detroit Eagle has one of the sweetest machinery packages I’ve seen in a long time.

Some features, including the cross-connected sea chests, are just good traditional design. Others are state-of-the-art, such as the infrared tank level sensors recessed above the tank top to prevent direct contact with fluid. Still other features are a blend of cutting-edge technology and common sense. Programmable logic circuits developed in cooperation with electronic giant Siemens monitor, but do not control, the engines. If the electronics crash, Detroit Eagle remains fully operational. With wry smiles, the crew shared that they had an opportunity to test the theory, with success.

Four blowers, two intake and two exhaust, are fitted to exchange the engineroom air. The exhaust blowers are reversible to supply the additional combustion air demanded when the gas turbine is operating. Two generators, powered by DDC 4-71 engines, are in a separate room abaft the main engineroom, allowing for extra sound and thermal insulation. Even the engineroom escape trunk to the side deck is innovative: Its ladder includes a “why didn’t I think of that? lift-and-slide mechanism so it can be stowed out of the way when loading machinery supplies.

Designer John Munford is perhaps best known for traditional interiors with lots of detailing, but Detroit Eagle gave him a chance to show the breadth of his talent with a look that is warm, but thoroughly clean and modern. After all, Penske’s collection of racing helmets and trophies would look a bit out of place in an Edwardian cabinet.

There was also the spatial challenge the machinery package posed. Large ducts penetrate the main and upper decks, bringing air in and exhausting gas from the engines through wings that support the radar arch. By angling the duct enclosures and fitting them with frosted glass doors, Munford divided the saloon from the dining room to create distinct spaces that can be combined or segregated.

The master stateroom is a full-beam space forward on the main deck that includes his-and-her baths and an arc of eight hanging lockers. Above it all, just forward of the pilothouse, is a tender garage with a hinged hatch that encloses the boat and davit.

Six guests are accommodated in three staterooms belowdecks. Twin staterooms are to port and starboard adjacent to the engineroom, and a VIP queen stateroom spans the hull’s full beam. Crew is forward, and the captain’s cabin is on the bridge deck.

Also on the bridge deck is Penske’s office. It is hard to imagine a more inviting and appropriate venue for a man whose life has revolved around speed and power. An array of Penske Racing Team helmets spreads across the after bulkhead. Trophies, photos and other racing memorabilia are displayed around the remainder of the room. If that’s not enough, consider the possibilities offered by the world beyond, which likely will include docking Detroit Eagle quayside in Monte Carlo, stepping onto the large open lounge area at the stern and watching Penske cars and drivers compete in the Grand Prix. Or maybe he’ll go up a deck and watch from the hot tub.

Unica 40 Superyacht

Geared toward indoor-outdoor living, Unica seamlessly connects the interior with the exterior decks and the broader oceanic surroundings. The stern is “a true haven of pleasure,” according to the Italian yard. Across the three aft decks lies a swim platform, an infinity pool with a lounge, and a cockpit with a dining area and plush seating.

Another highlight is the flybridge. Measuring 52 feet from end to end, the sprawling deck includes two sunbathing areas, a lounge, a dining area, a bar, and a round Jacuzzi. ISA says there are also more dining areas, sunbathing spots, and lounges on the main and upper deck.

With a beam of 27 feet and an interior volume of 390 GT, Unica features quite generous living quarters. The main deck includes a light-filled salon, a dining room, and a galley. Also on this deck is an owner’s suite with a lounge, vanity, dual walk-in wardrobes, an en suite, and an office.

There’s more to explore above and below deck, too. The lower deck is outfitted with three VIP suites, one twin, and the crew quarters, while the upper deck is home to a lounge, bar, captain’s cabin, and wheelhouse.

Unica’s performance specs are nothing to sneeze at, either. Powered by two MTU engines, the yacht can reach a maximum speed of 20 knots and a cruising speed of 15 knots. As for range, the cruiser can cover roughly 4,000 miles when traveling at 12 knots.

Unique or not, the Unica 40 is one impressive superyacht.

FOCUS can accommodate 10 guests in five cabins consisting of a bridge deck master suite with its own deck, two VIP suites and three twins, all with entertainment centers and en-suite bathroom facilities.

The master is located on the upper deck aft and features a large king-size bed in the center of the space. An automatic privacy screen can be raised behind the bed, blocking views from the entrance, for additional discretion. Eight large vertical windows surround the master and provide 270-degree views. It also has his-and-hers en-suite bathrooms to port and starboard forward. The port bathroom is fully customized for handicapped accessibility. The master also features a private aft deck with a seating banquette; this is an ideal space to enjoy morning coffee or an evening cocktail.

Four additional staterooms, two twins and two VIPs with queen-size beds, are located on the lower deck. All have en-suite bathrooms; the port twin and queen have luxurious bathtubs and the starboard staterooms have floor to ceiling glass showers. The starboard queen also has private access to the elevator.

Mark Zuckerberg has reportedly gifted himself a $300 million megayacht, dubbed “Launchpad,” ahead of his 40th birthday.

The staggering 387-foot-long vessel was seen floating at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., after arriving at its berth earlier this week, The Sun reported Thursday.

The multi-layered luxury ship’s sleek exterior was designed by Espen Øino International and boasts a steel hull and an aluminum superstructure, according to SuperYacht Times.

Reportedly ranking as the 45th largest yacht in the world, the interiors are just as aesthetically pleasing and reportedly executed by Zuretti Interior Design company, a France-based company specializing in unique and custom yacht design.

The breathtakingly beautiful floater stands out with a navy blue theme matching an American flag perched proudly on its wood-paneled stern.

There are several outdoor areas where the social media maven will be able to relax with his family and the indoor levels feature glass paneling allowing for tons of natural light.

There also appears to be a helipad perfect for whenever the Facebook co-founder wants to travel to his vessel by air.

The Feadship-built yacht, built in 2022, can comfortably fit 24 guests aboard, requires a crew of 48, and is said to cost $30 million a year for upkeep and usage, according to Superyachtfan.com .

Boatworld insiders have been buzzing with speculation that Zuckerberg is the owner of the newly minted mega-cruise ever since it made its main voyage from the Netherlands last week.

The tech titan was spotted touring the Russian-commissioned megayacht in early March, though the impressive boat didn’t arrive stateside until this week due to sanctions, according to The Sun.

The website reported that Zuckerberg purchased the pricey yacht – along with its own $30 million partner boat — most likely as an early 40th birthday present to himself.

The boat reportedly traveled to Florida after being granted special permission to be imported just weeks ahead of Zuckerberg’s birthday on May 14.

Zuckerberg’s yacht is just 30 feet shorter than the length of fellow billionaire Jeff Bezos’ 417-foot megayacht Koru, which the Amazon boss snagged for a whopping $500 million.

Zuckerberg’s rep did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment.

Baltimore bridge collapse wasn't first major accident for giant container ship Dali

Propulsion failed on the cargo ship that struck the Francis Key Bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday as it was leaving port, causing it to collapse into the frigid Patapsco River. Its crew warned Maryland officials of a possible collision because they had lost control.

“The vessel notified MD Department of Transportation (MDOT) that they had lost control of the vessel” and a collision with the bridge “was possible,” according to an unclassified Department of Homeland Security report. “The vessel struck the bridge causing a complete collapse.”

An official speaking on condition of anonymity confirmed to USA TODAY that the DHS’ Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency is working with federal, state, and local officials “to understand the potential impacts of this morning’s collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge.”

Clay Diamond, executive director, American Pilots’ Association, told USA TODAY power issues are not unusual on cargo ships, which are so large they cannot easily course correct.

“It’s likely that virtually every pilot in the country has experienced a power loss of some kind (but) it generally is momentary,” Diamond said. “This was a complete blackout of all the power on the ship, so that’s unusual. Of course this happened at the worst possible location.” 

The ship in Tuesday's crash, Dali, was involved in at least one prior accident when it collided with a shipping pier in Belgium.

That 2016 incident occurred as the Dali was leaving port in Antwerp and struck a loading pier made of stone, causing damage to the ship’s stern, according to VesselFinder.com, a site that tracks ships across the world. An investigation determined a mistake made by the ship’s master and pilot was to blame.

No one was injured in that crash, although the ship required repair and a full inspection before being returned to service. The pier – or berth – was also seriously damaged and had to be closed.

VesselFinder reports that the Dali was chartered by Maersk, the same company chartering it during the Baltimore harbor incident.

The 9-year-old container ship had passed previous inspections during its time at sea, but during one such inspection in June at the Port of San Antonio in Chile, officials discovered a deficiency with its "propulsion and auxiliary machinery (gauges, thermometers, etc)," according to the Tokyo MOU, an intergovernmental maritime authority in the Asia-Pacific region.

The report provided no other information about the deficiency except to note that it was not serious enough to remove the ship from service.

Why did Dali crash into the Baltimore bridge?

Officials said Tuesday they’re investigating the collision, including whether systems on board lost electricity early Tuesday morning, which could be related to mechanical failure, according to a U.S. official who was not authorized to speak publicly.

Accidents at sea, known as marine casualties, are not uncommon, the source told USA TODAY. However, “allisions,” in which a moving object strikes a stationary one with catastrophic results, are far less common. The investigation of the power loss aboard the Dali, a Singapore-flagged vessel, will be a high priority.

In a video posted to social media, lights on the Dali shut off, then turned back on, then shut off again before the ship struck a support pier on the bridge.

Numerous cargo and cruise ships have lost power over the years.

The International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea requires all international vessels to have two independent sources of electricity, both of which should be able to maintain the ship's seaworthiness on their own, according to a safety study about power failures on ships , citing the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea.

The Dali's emergency generator was likely responsible for the lights coming back on after the initial blackout, Diamond said.

“There was still some steerage left when they initially lost power,” he said. “We’ve been told the ship never recovered propulsion. The emergency generator is a diesel itself – so if you light off the generator, that’s also going to put off a puff of exhaust.”

Under maritime law, all foreign flagged vessels must be piloted into state ports by a state licensed pilot so the Dali's pilot is licensed by Association of Maryland Pilots .

Diamond described the incident based on information from the Maryland agency that licensed the pilot aboard the ship. His organization represents that group and all other state piloting agencies in the US.

“The pilot was directing navigation of the ship as it happened,” he said. “He asked the captain to get the engines back online. They weren’t able to do that, so the pilot took all the action he could. He tried to steer, to keep the ship in the channel. He also dropped the ship’s anchor to slow the ship and guide the direction.

“Neither one was enough. The ship never did regain its engine power.”

How big is the Dali ship?

The Dali is a 984-foot container vessel built in 2015 by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea. With a cruising speed of about 22 knots – roughly 25 mph. It has traveled the world carrying goods from port to port.

The ship, constructed of high-strength steel, has one engine and one propeller, according to MarineTraffic.com.

The Dali arrived in Baltimore on Sunday from the Port of Norfolk in Virginia. Before that, it had been in New York and came through the Panama Canal.

It remains at the scene of the collapse as authorities investigate.

Who owns and operates the Dali?

It is owned by the Singapore-based Grace Ocean Pte Ltd but managed by Synergy Marine Group, also based in Singapore. It was carrying Maersk customers’ cargo, according to a statement from the shipping company.

“We are deeply concerned by this incident and are closely monitoring the situation,” Maersk said in the statement. 

Synergy, which describes itself as a leading ship manager with more than 600 vessels under its guidance, issued a statement on its website acknowledging the incident and reporting no injuries among its crew and no pollution in the water. There were two pilots on board and 22 crew members in all, according to Synergy, all of them from India.

USA TODAY reached out to Synergy on Tuesday, but the company did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

March is traditionally the busiest month of the year with more than 1,000,000 travelers expected to come and go through Fort Myers. Why are there boats in the airport?

Boat company Fish Tale Boats has been working with RSW since 2012 to display their boats around the airport.

"Not only has this been successful for Fish Tale, but the airport itself," Fish Tale Boats spokesperson Ray Jahn said. "They love to have our boats on display there. People get off the planes and see beautiful boats. It is the lifestyle of Southwest Florida! This is one of the biggest photo opportunities that is loved by so many visitors at the airport."

Six presumed dead after cargo ship crash levels Baltimore bridge

BALTIMORE — A major Baltimore bridge collapsed like a house of cards early Tuesday after it was struck by a container ship, sending six people to their deaths in the dark waters below, and closing one of the country’s busiest ports.

By nightfall, the desperate search for six people who were working on the bridge and vanished when it fell apart had become a grim search for bodies.

“We do not believe that we’re going to find any of these individuals still alive,” Coast Guard Rear Admiral Shannon N. Gilreath said.

Jeffrey Pritzker, executive vice president of Brawner Builders, said earlier that one of his workers had survived. He did not release their names.

Up until then, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore had held out hope that the missing people might be found even as law enforcement warned that the frigid water and the fact that there had been no sign of them since 1:30 a.m. when the ship struck Francis Scott Key Bridge.

Moore expressed heartbreak after officials suspended the search for survivors.

"Our heart goes out to the families," he said. "I can’t imagine how painful today has been for these families, how painful these hours have been have been for these families."

It was a crushing blow to the loved ones of the missing men, who had waited for hours at a Royal Farms convenience store near the entrance of the bridge for word of their fate.

The tragic chain of events began early Tuesday when the cargo ship Dali notified authorities that it had lost power and issued a mayday moments before the 984-foot vessel slammed into a bridge support at a speed of 8 knots, which is about 9 mph.

Moore declared a state of emergency while rescue crews using sonar detected at least five vehicles in the frigid 50-foot-deep water: three passenger cars, a cement truck and another vehicle of some kind. Authorities do not believe anyone was inside the vehicles.

Investigators quickly concluded that it was an accident and not an act of terrorism.

Ship was involved in another collision

Earlier, two people were rescued from the water, Baltimore Fire Chief James Wallace said. One was in good condition and refused treatment, he said. The other was seriously injured and was being treated in a trauma center.

Moore said other drivers might have been in the water had it not been for those who, upon hearing the mayday, blocked off the bridge and kept other vehicles from crossing.

“These people are heroes,” Moore said. “They saved lives.”

Nearly eight years ago, the Dali was involved in an accident. In July 2016, it struck a quay at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges in Belgium, damaging the quay.

The nautical commission investigated the accident, but the details of the inquiry were not immediately clear Tuesday.

The Dali is operated and managed by Synergy Group. In a statement, the company said that two port pilots were at the helm during Tuesday's crash and that all 22 crew members onboard were accounted for.

The Dali was chartered by the Danish shipping giant Maersk, which said it would have no choice but to send its ships to other nearby ports with the Port of Baltimore closed.

The bridge, which is about a mile and a half long and carries Interstate 695 over the Patapsco River southeast of Baltimore, was "fully up to code," Moore said.

National Transportation Safety Board Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy said that her agency will lead the investigation and that a data recorder on the ship could provide more information.

"But right now we're focusing on the people, on the families," she said. "The rest can wait."

President Joe Biden vowed to rebuild the bridge and send federal funds.

"This is going to take some time," the president warned. "The people of Baltimore can count on us though to stick with them, at every step of the way, till the port is reopened and the bridge is rebuilt."

Speaking in Baltimore, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg echoed the president's promise.

"This is no ordinary bridge," he said. "This is one of the cathedrals of American infrastructure."

But Buttigieg warned that replacing the bridge and reopening the port will take time and money and that it could affect supply chains.

The Port of Baltimore, the 11th largest in the U.S., is the busiest port for car imports and exports, handling more than 750,000 vehicles in 2023 alone, according to data from the Maryland Port Administration.

Writer David Simon, a champion of Baltimore who set his TV crime drama "The Wire" on the streets of the city he once covered as a reporter, warned online that the people who will suffer the most are those whose livelihoods depend on the port.

"Thinking first of the people on the bridge," Simon posted on X . "But the mind wanders to a port city strangling. All the people who rely on ships in and out."

Dramatic video captured the moment at 1:28 a.m. Tuesday when the Dali struck a support and sent the bridge tumbling into the water. A livestream showed cars and trucks on the bridge just before the strike. The ship did not sink, and its lights remained on.

Investigators said in a timeline that the Dali's lights suddenly shut off four minutes earlier before they came back on and that then, at 1:25 a.m. dark black smoke began billowing from the ship's chimney.

A minute later, at 1:26 a.m., the ship appeared to turn. And in the minutes before it slammed into the support, the lights flickered again.

Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld said the workers on the bridge were repairing concrete ducts when the ship crashed into the structure.

At least seven workers were pouring concrete to fix potholes on the roadway on the bridge directly above where the ship hit, said James Krutzfeldt, a foreman.

Earlier, the Coast Guard said it had received a report that a “motor vessel made impact with the bridge” and confirmed it was the Dali, a containership sailing under a Singaporean flag that was heading for Sri Lanka.

Bobby Haines, who lives in Dundalk in Baltimore County, said he felt the impact of the bridge collapse from his house nearby.

"I woke up at 1:30 this morning and my house shook, and I was freaking out," he said. "I thought it was an earthquake, and to find out it was a bridge is really, really scary."

Families of bridge workers wait for updates

Earlier in the day, relatives of the construction crew waited for updates on their loved ones.

Marian Del Carmen Castellon told Telemundo her husband, Miguel Luna, 49, was working on the bridge.

“They only tell us that we have to wait and that they can’t give us information,” she said.

Castellon said she was "devastated, devastated because our heart is broken, because we don’t know how they have been rescued yet. We are just waiting for the news."

Luna's co-worker Jesús Campos said he felt crushed, too.

“It hurts my heart to see what is happening. We are human beings, and they are my folks,” he said.

Campos told The Baltimore Banner that the missing men are from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico.

Active search and rescue ends

The Coast Guard said it was suspending the active search-and-rescue effort at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

"Coast Guard’s not going away, none of our partners are going away, but we’re just going to transition into a different phase," Gilreath said at a news conference.

Maryland State Police Superintendent Roland L. Butler, Jr., said it was moving to a recovery operation. Changing conditions have made it dangerous for divers, he said. 

Butler pledged to "do our very best to recover those six missing people," but the conditions are difficult.

"If we look at how challenging it is at a simple motor vehicle crash to extract an individual, I'm sure we can all imagine how much harder it is to do it in inclement weather, when it's cold, under the water, with very limited to no visibility," he said.

"There's a tremendous amount of debris in the water," which can include sharp metal and other hazards, and that could take time, Butler said.

'A long road in front of us'

Built in 1977 and referred to locally as the Key Bridge, the structure was later named after the author of the American national anthem.

The bridge is more than 8,500 feet long, or 1.6 miles. Its main section spans 1,200 feet, and it was one of the longest continuous truss bridges in the world upon its completion, according to the National Steel Bridge Alliance .

About 31,000 vehicles a day use the bridge, which equals 11.3 million vehicles per year, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority.

The river and the Port of Baltimore are both key to the shipping industry on the East Coast, generating more than $3.3 billion a year and directly employing more than 15,000 people.

Asked what people in Baltimore can expect going forward, the state's transportation secretary said it is too early to tell.

"Obviously we reached out to a number of engineering companies, so obviously we have a long road in front of us," Wiedefeld said.
