Pro: good at doing very specific work on Volvo Penta V8, ie change the oil and filter. Con: not good at problem solving, ie, why is a exhaust alarm active? Also, the communication was weak between the service coordinators and the service techs. Recommendation, don't let the service tech do work on your boat without you personally prepping them
If I had gotten better communication with Jonathan about scheduling, this would have been a 5+. We had a service date, but I was never given a time; even after calling and emailing a couple times. I finally got the appointment time at 0740 for a tech arrival at 0800. I'm an old guy, emails are fine; but I'd like to have a human answer a phone and just give me the appointment time when I ask. As for the engine service and repair we were doing, FANTASTIC. Anthony is an expert Volvo guy. Zipped through the routine service and troubleshot the intermittent start issue like the PRO that he is. All Fixey-Fixey. What had been a difficult EVC fault issue was solved as a grounding problem. Given the chance (are you listening Jonathan), I will call for service from CYW without hesitation. Anthony is now my ace #1 Volvo guy. I hope to get this kind of expert service on other problems also.
Totally unprofessional people. Michael and Vincent. Was seeking boat repair. After filling out online work order and a couple of phone calls inquiring about wait time all my emails and voicemails went unanswered. Totally ghosted me. If they didn't want my business just say so and I'll move on. I guess with today's eroding values and morals that's too much to ask. Deal with these guys at your own risk.
Step by step replay of our interaction when needing someone to fix our boat when the engine wouldn't start: CYW: Comes out to boat, looks for 20 minutes. "You need to plug the battery in to the shore power, that's the issue. Plug it in overnight and tomorrow it'll work, otherwise call us." Us: "Sounds good." Next Day. Boat is same as day before. Us: Calls CYW. No response. Calls 5 times over next two days. No response. In meantime have to call another shop who sends guy out. He finds several wiring issues and a dead starter. Fixes over the next week and finally gets the boat running again. Three weeks later. CYW: Email with bill for their great diagnostic service and asks if there's anything else we need. Us: Ask why they're charging us and what work they did. Was there a report? Could we get some clarification? CYW: Charge was for our insight into plugging the boat in..... End of interaction.
I've worked with CYW for a couple of years now. Capt Scott first, who did on the water training, was outstanding. He's a truly gifted teacher. I sent my kids for powerboat handling classes as well. Everyone gives Capt Scott two thumbs up. Based on the experience I chose CYW for my winter storage, indoors. Also a great experience. Nancy and the crew were fantastic. Decided the bottom paint fresh and Michael and the crew took it down to the gel coat and painted up. The guy who scrubs the bottom of the boat during the season keeps complimenting their work. And, I had some fiberglass work on the topsides recently and Michael's crew did the work dockside and I can't even find the repair spot. So I highly recommend CYW for your boating needs!
Our boat had a multitude of issues. Michael A. was professional and helped us understand every issue and how they could be remedied. Chicago Yacht Works went above and beyond to make sure our boat was treated like any other (even though it was a 1987 problem). They are the real deal and are the most honest service facility I have dealt with. Thank you!!!!
Great training class. Scott the class instructor was awesome. For brand new speed boat owners I highly recommend this class. Great two day class...
My experience with purchasing my boat 2 years ago at CYW went very smooth and everyone was very professional. Unfortunately, there was a problem getting my title due to the Coast Guard government shut downs!!! It was very upsetting! CYW Rob Hannah (CEO) answered my phone calls every two week when I called for updates. I was pleasantly surprised that he did considering the sale was done and this was an issue that was really out of his control. After a year and a half, Carolynn Seabloom was hired and she was given the task to help me with my issues. I wasn't to happy at first thinking the ball just got passed to an employee and now it's not going anywhere! I was so wrong! Her energy and professionalism was unstoppable and a few months after she was on the assignment, I FINALLY got my title!!!!!!!!!! (Of course, NO more government shut downs help too!) So, I had to give them a shout out because both Rob and Carolynn I thought did an unbelievable job considering all the circumstances. Thanks Rob and Carolynn!!!
This is the worst ppl to deal with . I am dealing with them since last year . They not call beck even if you leave 10 massages . They never respond to emails. Ever time they have excuses after excuse. When i come personally they told me they don't have time for me or the manufacturing company didn't responded to them for over more then 2 months . Lie after lie . They told me to bring the boat to check what exactly they need to order when i go there they ask me why i come with the boat . This is game between the customer. How you can deal with the customer. How you treat everyone who come to you . If you will be dealing with everyone like with me since last year the ppl will never come to you. Well you lost me as the customer and i will never send someone to you
I made an appointment 10-days ahead of time for a harbor call to fix a freezer. I had to put down a credit card to make the appointment. On the day of the appointment I was onboard at 0800, and spent the ENTIRE day listening to excuses why the tech was not there. At 1600 I was told the tech was not coming. They rescheduled for two days later, "first appointment in the morning, 0800". Currently 0945, the excuses are coming in, but no tech. These guys are absolutely terrible. There are so many other Yacht Service companies out there.

Eric, My sincere apologies for our service failure. There was in your case an internal communications lapse that led to this unfortunate situation. Why Use a Professional Yacht Broker?
Boat transactions customarily represent large financial investments. It’s not unusual for transactions to exceed $100,000, and in some instances they may exceed $3,000,000. If you had a $100,000 income tax problem or a $100,000 legal question, would you attempt to handle it without experienced professional advice?
Considering the small upside cost and the large downside risk, it would be folly to consider a transaction in yacht brokerage without the professional assistance of a qualified Yacht Broker. Jeff Pierce at Windy City Yachts is dedicated to providing skilled professional advice to the Chicago Boating Community.
Whether you are buying or selling, WCYB’s Buyers Checklist » provides valuable guidance to a successful outcome.

A sure sign of fall (or spring) in Chicago is the biannual boat run, during which 27 lift bridges are sequentially opened from S. Ashland Ave. to Lake Shore Dr. in downtown Chicago. The purpose of the run is to allow the passage of recreational sailboats and large cruising vessels from boat storage yards to Lake Michigan.
The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) operates and maintains the bridges and sets the biannual boat run lift schedules. Spring boat runs are conducted from mid-April through June for the outbound trip to Lake Michigan, while fall boat runs are conducted mid-September to early November for the inbound trip back to a storage yard. The bridges open approximately 40 times a year from April to November. (Vessels that do not require an opening can set their own schedule.)
Each bridge lift takes an average of 8 to 12 minutes. The trip through downtown can take a total of 2 to 4 hours. Spring boat runs begin at one of two yacht yards–Chicago Yacht Works at Mile 321.7 (Ashland Ave.) or Canal Street Marina & Yacht Yard at Mile 323.
Starting times at the yacht yards are usually 8:00 a.m. on Saturdays and 9:30 a.m. on Wednesdays. The largest number of boats make the trip to Lake Michigan in May, and historically no boat run is scheduled on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. Fall boat runs start at the N. Lake Shore Drive Bridge at Diversey Harbor at 9:00 a.m. on Saturdays and 9:30 a.m. on Wednesdays. This tradition started back in the 1800s, when Chicago was a busy crossway on the water route from Buffalo, NY to the Mississippi River.
The very first bridges that were built in 1840 started out as floating swing bridges. Next was a timber drawbridge constructed at Dearborn St. that resembled those traversing moats at medieval castles, complete with large lifting chains. In the years that followed, Chicago's bridge history included five types of movable bridges–floating, swing, vertical lift, rolling lift bascule and fixed trunnion bascule.
Ultimately, it was the trunnion bascule bridge–inspired by London Bridge–that became a Chicago staple. The first trunnion bascule bridge opened in 1902 over the north branch of the Chicago River at Cortland Street. Known as a "Chicago Style" bridge, the leaves are suspended on axles (trunnions) with massive concrete counterweights located in a riverbank pit below the bridge.
There are single-leaf bascule bridges, often used for trains, and double-leaf bascule bridges, which can best be described as two seesaws located across from each other. Today there are18 trunnion bascule bridges in a mere 2 miles in downtown Chicago.
The biannual boat runs are an interesting and, at times, chaotic experience. Expect a mix of tour boats, pleasure boats, kayakers and other paddlers in the downtown area. Be forewarned that horns will be blasting and boat engines idling during bridge lifts. If that's not nerve-wracking enough, the River Walk will likely be crowded with folks watching the parade of boats.
Another great vantage point is the top of the five-story McCormick Bridgehouse & Chicago River Museum, which offers magnificent 360-degree views of the city. At the lowest level of the bridgehouse, visitors can view the moving gears as they lift the massive Michigan Avenue Bridge leaf.
You can find bridge schedules, a tour map and a historical overview at www.chicagoloopbridges.com or call 312-745-3115.

Prosecutors won’t oppose certificates of innocence for brothers in murder case marked by torture allegations
Brothers reginald henderson and sean tyler were convicted of a 1994 murder in back of the yards but say they were tortured by detectives working under chicago police cmdr. jon burge..
Reginald Henderson (right) and Sean Tyler (center) speak to reporters Wednesday morning at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse after a hearing on their petitions for certificates of innocence in a 1994 murder case that was vacated over allegations of police torture.
Matthew Hendrickson/Sun-Times
Cook County prosecutors have dropped their opposition to two brothers receiving certificates of innocence in a 1994 murder case that was overturned based on allegations of torture by detectives working under disgraced Chicago Police Cmdr. Jon Burge.
Flanked by more than a dozen supporters, Reginald Henderson and his brother Sean Tyler had hoped Wednesday would finally be the day that they received the long-sought acknowledgment from the court that they were innocent.
Instead, they learned they would have to wait a little longer.
During a brief hearing, prosecutors told Judge Erica Reddick that the state's attorney's office would no longer oppose the brothers’ petitions for certificates of innocence — which in addition to clearing their names would also entitle them to state restitution funds.
A spokeswoman for State's Attorney Kim Foxx did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the decision.
Reddick said she needed more time to review case records and set a date for April 2, when she said she hoped to have her ruling.
"I feel good about what the state did," Tyler said at a news conference after the hearing. "I kinda hate that it took 30 years for it to happen, but nonetheless I do appreciate them removing themselves and not opposing."
He and his brother both served their entire sentences — more than 25 years each — while they fought their convictions.
In fall of 2021, prosecutors agreed to vacate their convictions, then dropped all charges. But they continued to oppose granting certificates of innocence, which would remove records of their arrest and charges and entitle them to a payout of likely a little more than $200,000 from a state fund for people wrongfully convicted.
Getting a case overturned isn't enough, and actual innocence must be proven by the brothers to receive a certificate.
Since Tyler and Henderson were convicted, several witnesses have recanted their testimony and the abuses by Burge and his detectives have become widely known.
But prosecutors previously pointed to a woman who told defense lawyers that police pressed her to identify Tyler and Henderson and had paid her $1,100 to move from the neighborhood. She has since said told investigators that her testimony was true.
In court filings, the brothers have alleged they were targeted by detectives working for Burge because they testified for the defense in the case of 13-year-old Marcus Wiggins, who claimed he confessed to a 1991 murder after police torture.
The detectives accused the brothers of involvement in the shooting of 10-year-old Rodney Collins, who was killed by a stray bullet during a gang gunfight in Back of the Yards.
Henderson claims he was beaten by detectives and left handcuffed in an interrogation room without food or access to a bathroom before he signed a confession after more than 48 hours in custody.
His brother was arrested the next day and also alleges he was abused before confessing.
Burge was fired in 1993 and was convicted in 2010 of lying under oath while being questioned for lawsuits brought by men claiming they were tortured by Burge or his detectives.
The former commander was sentenced to more than four years in prison. He died in 2018.
Tyler said he would return to the courthouse again next month with his family and supporters.
"We came here expecting full justice to be served and this really to be put to bed," Tyler said. "It kinda sucks justice takes this long, but it is what it is."

LOOK: Cardinals adding luxury casitas with rooftop decks and 'front yards' to State Farm Stadium
Now you can watch the game from a home away from home.
The Arizona Cardinals aren't just rebuilding their team. They're also rebuilding their stadium -- sort of. Starting in 2024, the Cardinals' State Farm Stadium will feature new state-of-the-art game-day seating options , including everything from end-zone "casitas" to field-level sideline suites and garden clubs.
"Casitas," which is Spanish for small houses, are prevalent in Arizona. Now, 10 of them have been custom-built specifically for private use at State Farm Stadium, the team announced. "The NFL equivalent of beachfront property," they will sit "just feet from the south end zone," holding up to 20 guests on a space including a two-level cottage, a rooftop deck and even a "front yard" overlooking the Cardinals' turf.
Introducing our new field-level seating and clubs. No matter where you sit, you'll get the best-in-class experience. — Arizona Cardinals (@AZCardinals) March 18, 2024
The casitas are a headlining piece of a $15 million renovation, according to Sports Business Journal , that replaces roughly 1,200 general-purpose seats at the stadium. They will also include large TVs inside the homes for watching the game unfolding just outside their "lawn," as well as access to a new Casita Garden Club. The latter is a 13,400-square-foot design recreating the feel of an "outdoor garden patio" that'll span the width of the entire south end zone. This club will feature not only all-inclusive food and beverage, but upfront access to the area through which the Cardinals players take the field.
Besides the casitas and garden club, State Farm Stadium will also introduce a variety of field and tunnel suites, as well as new field boxes. These offerings will include new leather seats and also prioritize proximity to the action, with the field seats located directly at field level, "just a few strides" from where the Cardinals will play their home games.

Fort Lauderdale is looking at raising roads to battle rising seas
by Susannah Bryan, South Florida Sun-Sentinel
It's a scary thought: Sea levels rising by as much as 2 feet, swallowing up land, homes and everything else not on high ground.
It could happen as soon as 2060, experts say.
Fort Lauderdale, with its overabundance of low-lying neighborhoods both inland and along the coast, is already looking at one drastic, "last-resort" option to help keep streets high and dry: Raising roads.
Higher seawalls, bigger pipes and better pumping stations won't be enough to armor the city, Fort Lauderdale officials warn.
Fort Lauderdale is seeking input from experts with the Urban Land Institute, a nonprofit organization made up of land-use experts who also have offered guidance to other cities vulnerable to flooding, including New Orleans, Boston, New York City, Chicago and El Paso.
A panel of ULI experts recently toured Fort Lauderdale's most flood-prone neighborhoods, then held two public meetings with the community to hear from residents and share what might lie ahead.
During the first meeting, Fort Lauderdale resident Judy Mudge told panelists she's about to grow gills and fins.
"We're really impacted by the king tides," she said of her Las Olas Isles neighborhood. "It's really frustrating. The road becomes a river. The seawall does not stop the water. We really need your help."
'Living in a bathtub'
Resident John Roth chimed in.
"We are living in the bottom of a bathtub," he said. "People are running out to buy high-clearance vehicles or a boat. I have both. We're still building road diets around here (where lanes are removed to slow down traffic). That's the wrong way to go, guys. You have to (give) people (a way) to escape."
Fort Lauderdale is raising seawalls, upgrading drainage and installing tidal valves in an attempt to reduce coastal flooding , Assistant Public Works Director Nancy Gassman said. But for flood-prone areas where upgrades have not solved the problem, roadway elevation has been proposed as the next potential solution.
ULI's advisory panel plans to return to Fort Lauderdale in a few months with a list of recommendations for the city on how to choose which roads to raise and suggestions on how high to raise them. The panelists will also suggest ways to find funding.
A controversial road-raising project is already underway in Miami Beach, where some residents are complaining of roads so high that lawns flood while streets stay dry.
If a road is raised by 2 feet, nearby homes can flood unless they are elevated along with the road. And that can cost a pretty penny.
Raising a home above base elevation can cost anywhere from $30,000 to more than $100,000, according to FL Home Builder.
"Road elevation is the last resort," Commissioner Steve Glassman told the South Florida Sun Sentinel on Friday. "Miami Beach had issues, but we have to learn from that. How do we mitigate those issues? I think we can learn from those who have already done this. And you do a better job when you learn from mistakes that have been made."
If Fort Lauderdale officials move forward with a plan to elevate roads, they are likely going to get pushback from homeowners, said Kitty McGowan, a local activist who has served on Fort Lauderdale's Marine Advisory Board.
"If you put a mountain next to something that's lower, the water is going to run down," McGowan said.
To avoid a deluge, residents would have to pay an "insane" amount to have their homes elevated to the same level as the road, McGowan said.
McGowan lives in Fort Lauderdale's Edgewood neighborhood, where nearly 300 homes were damaged in a record-breaking rainstorm that hit last year on April 12—including McGowan's. Many homeowners did not have flood insurance.
"I lost everything," McGowan said. "It took nine months to get back in my house. Dozens of people in my neighborhood are still displaced. We were ground zero for that flood."
Retreating from the coast?
Another option considered by some coastal cities is what is known as managed retreat, where property owners voluntarily leave flood-prone areas.
Municipalities typically rely on planning, zoning and environmental impact assessments to subtly manage retreat, according to a report authored by Gabriella Mickel published last year in the UCLA Journal of Environmental Law Policy.
"For example, Punta Gorda limits new development in flood-prone areas and prohibits hard shoreline armoring," Mickel wrote. "Punta Gorda has also utilized another managed retreat tactic—buyouts. Punta Gorda buys out properties to help people move away from the coastline. It then uses the land to build living shorelines that buffer floods and facilitate the inland migration of coastal habitats."
Fort Lauderdale officials have made no mention of buying out private property owners—not yet, anyway.
"How do you tell people it's not really worth trying to save your street or your home?" Glassman said. "It's scary. It's a scary thought. But it might be the reality of the future. But that's part of a much larger discussion."
Last year, Fort Lauderdale commissioners gave unanimous approval to new seawall height requirements, increasing the minimum top elevation from 3.9 feet to 5 feet.
Seawalls are not cheap.
A homeowner with a 100-foot-long seawall might end up paying anywhere from $125,000 to $200,000.
The new rule, mandated by Broward County to address sea-level rise and tidal flooding, will apply to homeowners who fall into one of three categories:
- Those who are building a new seawall.
- Those with seawalls in significant disrepair, with damage to more than 50% of the structure.
- Those with seawalls so low that tidal flooding breaches the seawall and sends water into neighboring yards and nearby roadways.
In March 2020, Broward County adopted new seawall standards for more than a dozen cities susceptible to high-tide flooding and gave them two years to adopt the new rules.
Several cities have already done so, including Hollywood, Dania Beach, Hallandale Beach, Davie, Deerfield Beach, Pompano Beach, Wilton Manors, Oakland Park and Lauderdale-by-the-Sea.
Fort Lauderdale homeowners cited by the city will have one year to build or replace their seawall . If they miss the 365-day deadline, they can be fined $100 a day.
