Elan Impression 43: New Family Cruiser From Elan Yachts

After Elan successfully launched the unique grand tourer, the  Elan GT6 , and the sporty  Elan E6 , the company decided to introduce a completely new yacht to carry the torch for the Impression Line. Thus, the Elan Impression 43 was born.

Boasting a modern wide-beam hull, the yacht offers much more space than previous models. Due to the continuing tradition of a raised coach roof, what Elan calls a “semi-deck-saloon”, it holds its own against most competitors as well.

It will surprise no one that the hull and sail plan was designed by the naval architecture studio  Humphreys Yacht Design . Be rest assured that the yacht will therefore have great sailing characteristics even at fully-loaded larger displacement yachts.

The yachts aesthetics were styled in cooperation with the design studio  Pininfarina , a relationship that birthed the multiple design award-winning Elan E6 and is now continuing with the Elan Impression 43.

The hull and sail plan are optimized for easy short-handed sailing. Elan’s recognizable 3D VAIL composite technology creates a light, stiff and incredibly safe construction style. VAIL, or vacuum-assisted infusion lamination process creates a solid hull without imperfections or air bubbles, which, in combination with the vinyl ester outer layer makes the yacht osmosis-proof.

The “3D” part of vacuum-assisted infusion lamination is applied to the vertical and lateral stringers, which ensures the best mechanical properties of the hull and rigging and is the secret behind Elan’s famed hull stiffness.

The deck is also constructed in VAIL technology, which adds to lightness and durability to the yacht as well as improves the mechanical properties of the composite. Moreover, the construction technology process is safer for the workers and the environment, as it protects the workers from chemical exposure and reduces waste.

The yacht has twin rudders, designed by Humphreys Yacht Design, in-house epoxy-constructed rudders optimized for rigidity, endurance, and control. The twin rudder design provides finger-tip steering and reduces the tendency to broach.

The cockpit is built for enjoyment at anchor as well as sailing pleasure. Ample seating for up to 10 people will make sure everyone has comfort on board. Optional modular cockpit table converts into two sunbeds and enables lounging and sunbathing in the cockpit as well.

Beautifully designed steering pedestals, where the Pininfarina touch is clearly seen, can support 9-inch electronics and a myriad of other instrument displays and controls. The twin helm with composite steering wheels offers freedom of movement aboard.

There are plenty of cockpit lockers as well, offering enough space for a life-raft, and any other equipment that needs to be on hand.

Integrated into the deck are two transom boxes, which offer an extended seating area for the skipper and guests and can hold both a grill and a refrigerator.

The yacht comes with a small bathing platform in standard specification, and that can be upgraded to a large platform for more space, safety, and a closed transom feel.

No Impression yacht would be complete without the now-iconic transom seats, which are sure to be the first taken as the yacht sets sail.

The deck can be enhanced with both synthetic and real teak, depending on the wishes of the owner. Large, flush hatches and portlights are built in the coach roof in many places, letting both light, and that soothing breeze in the interior.

The yacht has a self-tacking jib is standard, but can also be upgraded to a genoa among other options.

The interior is built with “rustic” oak veneer and marine-grade plywood, contrasted with modern gray-coloured storage cupboards. A solid oak wood finish is applied wherever the furniture is expected to go through most use, to increase its durability.

The saloon can comfortably seat the crew around a centre table, flanked by two solid wood chairs that fold in a pre-determined space when sailing. IT can also be easily converted into a double berth.

The long side-galley features a three-ring stove with an oven and a front-opening refrigerator on the convenient L-shaped cabinet. The long layout offers plenty of surface space and cupboards for storage. The stove area is protected by easy-to-clean panels and is ventilated by a hatch above.

Owners can choose between three or four-cabin versions. The three-cabin version includes an ensuite with an island bed and a spacious head with a separate shower, and the four-cabin version adds a cabin with bunk beds, perfect for families or groups of friends.

The new Impression 43 will be officially launched at Biograd Boat Show in Croatia on the 25th of October, while the pre-orders are possible from the 4th of July.

Recently, Elan Yachts started teasing the world of yachting with a new project. Pininfarina, the legendary design studio from Turin, Italy, joined the project team, along with nautical architecture studio Humphreys Yacht Design and composite specialists, Gurit . The yacht was now announced to be the largest addition to Elan’s performance range, the 47 ft Elan E6.

Elan E line is on the performance side of Elan’s range. The yachts were among the first in industry to introduce off-shore short-handed racing features into the cruising segment. Recognised by the active chine design, twin rudders and t-shaped keels, these performance cruisers are the go-to choice for serious sailors who also expect high levels of comfort and cruising amenities for their friends and family. The E6 is the latest iteration of this ethos, taking all elements of this complicated dance to the next level. It is a fusion of Italian aesthetics, exceptional nautical architecture, and high-tech composite technology.

“ The E6 challenged our capabilities and pushed the boundaries in terms of technology and design ”, explained Marko Škrbin , director of Elan’s nautical division. “ However, in concept and spirit, this yacht represents more of a return to our roots; it is a yacht for demanding sailors that also provides comfortable living aboard ”.

The yacht’s aesthetics were designed by Pininfarina

Pininfarina is the reason behind the E6’s head-turning looks. It is, after all, the design powerhouse studio that designed some of Ferrari’s most iconic cars – and more than 600 projects in industrial and transportation design, winning more than 50 awards in the last 10 years. They are no strangers to the nautical world either, as they are responsible for the Wally 101 and Tango Wallycento yachts, among others. For Elan, Pininfarina focused on reinterpreting the E Line’s recognizable looks in their own legendary style and nautical tradition. They gave the E6 a strong sportive connotation, using a few fluid lines to give it a unique character.

“ The result is a sailboat with pure shapes and a modern style projected towards the future, which is the direction performance lovers must always look at ”, explains Daniele Mazzon , Pininfarina’s Chief Transportation Designer.

Not Just a Pretty Thing

Behind its beautiful façade, the E6 is intended to be among the lightest and stiffest 47 ft fitted production performance cruisers on the market with a fully fitted interior. A significant contributor to this is the famed naval architecture of Humphreys Yacht Design. They developed a brand new hull to fit the needs of the E6. A lot of effort has gone into CFD modelling and analysis to choose the E6’s sailing performance and handling. Results were assessed and compared through the VPP (velocity prediction programs) to fine-tune the hull’s performance. Elan’s E-Line yachts are renowned for their excellent performance in a fresh breeze, especially downwind, but the results of this new-generation hull is also expected to be quick in light airs, due to its notably high sail area to displacement ratio. At the same time, the hulls versatility covers a range of displacements to cater to people requiring greater load carrying capabilities. 

Technology With Gurit

Elan was one of the first shipyards to introduce vacuum assisted infusion lamination technology to the word of sailing yachts and had continuously led the charge in this area. However for this project, Elan’s internal composite specialists challenged their know-how and pushed it to the next level by cooperating with composite industry-leaders, Gurit. Their structural engineering expertise gave the Elan team confidence to push the laminate plan a lot further. The E6 utilizes 3D VAIL process (an advanced version of infusion lamination), enabling significant weight gains on the composite parts and considerable improvements of the hull’s mechanical properties.

Its VAIL vacuum infusion process was already one of the brand’s key strengths, but all hull and deck materials have been comprehensively upgraded and the E6’s performance potential has been given a significant boost by the structural engineering expertise of Gurit. ‘The laminate plan and geometry have been pushed a lot further,’ Rajapakse says. ‘In plain terms, Gurit’s know-how and calculations have given us confidence and courage. They analyse every nook and cranny to calculate what we should reinforce, what we can remove, where we can shift focus. Also we have upgraded the hull/deck joint, especially at the stern, moving closer to a monolithic structure and thus creating a stronger, safer yacht.’

While the yacht has been designed to be easily sailed by an experienced couple, the E6 is meant to be sailed with a good crew. Three pairs of Harken winches, ideally positioned for precision trimming and fast unobstructed movements, are the result of 1:1 scale model in-house testing with a former Olympic sailing team. For more cruising minded sailors, optional storage boxes with a grill, sink and a refrigerator are available, as well as two sizes of bathing platforms.

Designed for the perfect blend of aesthetics and functionality by Pininfarina, the enticing and practical interior invites perfect living at sea. The creative form is brought alive by the natural oak veneered interior and enriched with solid wood finish. Elan also provides an option of performance okoume furniture that keeps the weight down, while not hindering the boat’s luxurious look and feel. The E6 also comes with a fully equipped galley with a front-opening fridge and optional microwave or coffee machine that will provide the comfort of home.

Construction of the prototype E6 is about to commence, and the yachts boat show début is due to be at Boot Düsseldorf in January. Sea trials will start in March on the Adriatic. Potential buyers will be able to sail the E6 at Portorož in Slovenia from April next year and delivery slots are available (at the time of writing) from the end of May onwards.

History of Elan Yachts

Founded in 1945 by boat builder, Janez Klenovsek, Elan Yachts is a Slovenian sailboat manufacturer based in Begunje. It has become renowned for its production of high-quality and competitively-priced performance yachts and motorboats.

The company initially specialised in Olympic-class sailing yachts, winning various world and European championships and producing the first molded composite sailing yacht in the world. Later, Elan continued to be at the forefront of innovation, launching the first-ever convertible deck saloon in 2006 and the first integral, one-piece bathing platform in 2011. Elan 450 review: from the archive

As you walk into the reception area at Elan’s factory in Slovenia, you’re greeted by a rack of vintage wooden skis, a reminder of the company’s roots, making skis for partisans in World War II.

They’re still at it – many of the sheds on site are building skis both under the Elan brand and for several other well known names.

There’s even an upper floor dedicated to building gliders, another facet of the business Elan has now let to a third party.

But despite this wealth of other interests, Elan are one of the most vibrant yacht builders in the market at present.

Since signing Rob Humphreys as their designer in 1995, they have been stepping up the rate at which they produce new designs, steadily adding models to their performance range and the Impression range of cruisers, introduced in 2004.

The Elan 410, launched last year, proved a highly successful cruiser-racer and is due to be followed shortly by a smaller version, the Elan 380.

But in the meantime it seems Elan have gone mad – the latest launch, seen at London in January, looks like a 45ft ocean racer, but with a comfortable interior that would have the race boys desperately chucking furniture over the side to save weight.

Seen in plan view, the Elan 450 looks like the base of an iron, with a sharp, plumb stem and the maximum beam about three-fifths of the way down the boat, carried aft to relatively flat sections and a tremendously wide transom with twin rudders.

Revolutionary

She looks like a performance machine, but Rob Humphreys and the team at Elan swear she is really aimed at cruising yachtsmen – in fact, less of a race yacht than the Elan 410.

That means she is revolutionary – this type of thinking may exist on performance racers, but has never been seen to this extreme on a production cruising boat.

It’s a bold gamble by Elan and just to give a taste of how much they have committed to the project, every Elan 450 they build takes up two build bays, as the wide transom forces them to slew the yacht across into the next bay.

That’s a major impact on production and only time and sales will tell whether it has paid off.

Sailing the Elan 450

I was keen to sail the Elan 450 in a good breeze to find out if the semi-chined hull really works – the theory is that, as the boat heels, she sits on the angle to present a very long, but very narrow profile to the water.

Unfortunately, the weather gods were not on our side and gave us a flat calm in Slovenia.

A few weeks later in the UK we found better luck, but with still only around 10 knots’ true breeze she was hardly on the edge of her performance.

Still, that makes what she did achieve all the more impressive. Going upwind she made an easy six knots, tacking through between 75° and 80°.

Tacks were smart and positive, with the minimal overlap headsail flicking swiftly across and the boat quickly finding and keeping the groove with little effort.

Once or twice we managed to achieve a respectable heel and see a clean wake peeling off the angled hull astern and the leeward rudder sitting vertically in the water to give maximum power.

The helm felt very positive with no slack and good feedback and, although the tip of the windward rudder is still in the water in these conditions, there was no noticeable effect on the helm.

In lighter winds the helm is still light and positive, but felt a little stiff.

Bearing away to a close reach, she managed around 6.5 knots, after which we pulled out the retractable bowsprit and hoisted the gennaker.

No option for a symmetrical spinnaker is provided as the yacht is expected to be sailed with an asymmetric only.

A semi-chined hull should help to improve the Elan 450’s performance. A gennaker on a retractable bowsprit is provided for downwind sailing.

Pointing up to around 70° she made a maximum of 7.5 knots, falling away to 6 knots on a reach and 4.5 knots further off the wind.

One noticeable feature of the design is that the Elan 450 really is a ‘boat with gears’.

In the variable wind strength we experienced, the 3 knot difference between 7 and 10 knots made a step change in performance.

She slips along well, but not remarkably in light winds, but give her an extra few knots and she really takes off.

I suspect that, like the racing yachts that inspired her, she is sensitive to sailplan, especially when reaching, and we would have experienced much better speed with the larger 160m2 gennaker allowed with the boat.

Under gennaker she felt very stable and with the twin rudder and huge form stability of her broad hull you should be able to drive her hard into strong winds while still retaining control.

The cockpit layout works well for the helmsman, with practical seating to windward or leeward and intelligently placed blocks for bracing.

Behind the helm runs a bench that can be either manually swung outboard to form a passerelle when moored stern-to, or optionally fitted with a hydraulic system.

This looks very impressive and smacks of superyachting, but be warned – it’s not only expensive, but also extremely heavy.

The traveller is placed just forward of the helm and can be easily reached from the helm, as can the mainsheet winches – the Elan 450 has a German mainsheet, led forward along the boom from the traveller before coming aft to a pair of cockpit winches.

The helm also has control of the hydraulic backstay, which is adjacent to the port wheel.

The remainder of the lines are managed by the primary winches and a pair on the coachroof, so this yacht should be fairly easy to sail with two people – there’s even a bin just abaft the companionway to help keep lines tidy, although it didn’t see much use on our test sail.

The cockpit is enormously wide, so two long teak blocks are provided for the crew to brace against when seated.

It seems fairly secure, but inevitably you’re going to feel very high up when sitting to windward at high angles of heel.

A huge hatch in the cockpit floor lifts to reveal space for two liferafts and also stores the table – far from a perfect solution as the heavy table is strapped down on top of the liferafts, making swift access impossible.

Other stowage is provided by shallow cockpit lockers each side, a drained wet space below the port helmsman’s seat and a large dinghy garage which can either be accessed by a centre hatch between the helms or by lowering the hydraulic swim platform.

The foredeck is kept neat and tidy thanks to an under-deck furler and a bow roller which swings out from the locker when needed.

Under power she cruised at around 7 knots, with a maximum of around 7.5 knots.

Turns at speed are tight – only just over a boatlength – but it’s when manoeuvring that the twin rudders are most noticeable, demanding more speed than a conventional single rudder configuration owing to the lack of propwash.

In astern she stays precise and manageable, although the wide transom inevitably slams into waves.

Elan 450 interior: Uncluttered

Below decks the beam of the yacht allows an open, uncluttered layout, with a huge amount of natural light thanks to the strip of deckhatches that runs the length of the coachroof.

The main seating area is to starboard, with a big folding table surrounded by a U-shaped settee with a two-seater settee opposite.

Each settee has lockers and a bookshelf behind, while the space beneath is occupied by tankage, etc.

Forward of the port settee is a neat unit with a drinks cabinet under a lifting lid, a small drawer and a locker in the kickspace.

To port is the navstation, which faces forward.

There’s good stowage for paper charts below the lifting lid and also room for instruments on the lockers to port, with the breaker panel and shorepower switches fitted below.

There’s a large locker in the chart table seat and a stack of three soft-close drawers built into the pedestal.

Behind the seat a tall unit provides a short, drained wet locker complete with a heater outlet, while below is a pull-out, two-compartment bin.

The galley is a large L-shape, with a huge front-opening fridge facing the companionway.

Adjacent is a double sink with a neat drained compartment behind for washing-up liquid, etc, while in the corner is a small freezer.

There’s a large locker below the sink, while on the other arm of the L a three-ring cooker is fitted, with a sliding worktop section for when it is not in use.

Guests have a choice between two aft cabins: choosing the port cabin gains you ensuite access to the aft heads, while the starboard one offers more stowage.

Both have generous double berths and a good-sized shelved locker.

The aft heads is quite small, with only just standing headroom, but is generally well fitted out.

The forward owner’s cabin is huge, with a big centre double berth and a two-person settee to port.

Elan offer a four-cabin layout which uses this space differently, but at the time of our test had not yet built an example.

Stowage is good, with a large hanging locker, several high-level lockers and two big drawers in the foot of the berth.

A long box runs along the deckhead to starboard housing the retractable bowsprit, but the space it takes does not affect the living area.

A generous heads ensuite has room for a separate shower, divided by a neat, cylindrical screen.
