MASTERING LIGHTNESS

Light and robust, the new Yacht-Master 42, in RLX titanium, is the ally of those who revel in freedom. Especially suited to the demands and pressures of competitive sailing, it delivers exceptional performance.

Rolex is presenting a new version of the Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 42. This nautical watch is introduced for the first time in RLX titanium – a particularly strong but lightweight alloy – and is fitted on an Oyster bracelet. The new version stands out for its technical satin finish – a satin finish with a visible grain, a feature of Rolex watches in RLX titanium – which extends to the middle case sides, the edges of the bracelet links and the sides of the clasp cover. The chamfered top edges of the middle case lugs have a high-sheen finish, while the crown guard is polished. With its bidirectional rotatable bezel fitted with a Cerachrom insert in matt black ceramic featuring raised and polished numerals and graduations, the Yacht-Master 42 in RLX titanium remains faithful to the aesthetics of the original model, unveiled in 2019. It is graced with an intense black dial in a fine satin finish, and its Oyster bracelet is equipped with the Easylink comfort extension link. The new version of the Yacht-Master 42 is equipped with calibre 3235, a movement at the forefront of watchmaking technology, enabling it to display the date as well as the hours, minutes and seconds. Like all Rolex watches, the Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 42 carries the Superlative Chronometer certification, which ensures excellent performance on the wrist.

THE CALL OF THE OPEN SEAS Launched in 1992, the Yacht-Master was designed specifically for navigators and skippers. Embodying the rich heritage that has bound Rolex and the world of sailing since the 1950s, this Professional-category watch provides a perfect blend of functionality and nautical style, making it equally at home on and off the water. An emblematic nautical timepiece, it is easily recognized by its bidirectional rotatable 60-minute graduated bezel made entirely from precious metal or fitted with a Cerachrom insert in high-technology ceramic.

RLX TITANIUM  RLX titanium is a grade 5 titanium alloy specially selected by Rolex. Like all titanium alloys, it is especially lightweight and is noted for its mechanical strength and corrosion resistance. Another characteristic of RLX titanium is the possibility of working it to give a polished or satin finish according to the brand’s specifications. Its high mechanical strength makes it complex to work with, and the decision to use it has required the introduction of special production processes.

HIGH-TECHNOLOGY CERAMIC Rolex played a pioneering role in the development of special ceramics for creating monobloc bezels and bezel inserts. Not only are these materials virtually scratchproof, their colours are also of a rare intensity and are resistant to environmental effects. In addition, thanks to its chemical composition, the high-tech ceramic is inert and cannot corrode. Rolex has developed exclusive expertise and innovative manufacturing methods that grant it complete independence in the production of these ceramic components. On the new version of the Yacht-Master 42, the bidirectional rotatable bezel is fitted with a 60-minute graduated Cerachrom insert in matt black ceramic. Its raised graduations and numerals are first moulded into the ceramic and then polished. The first 15 minutes are graduated minute-by-minute to allow time intervals to be read with great precision. The bezel can also be turned with ease thanks to its knurled edge, which offers excellent grip.

OYSTER CASE, SYMBOL OF WATERPROOFNESS  A paragon of robustness and reliability, the 42 mm Oyster case of the new Yacht-Master 42 is guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 100 metres (330 feet). The middle case is crafted from a solid block of RLX titanium. Its case back, edged with fine fluting, is hermetically screwed down with a special tool that allows only Rolex watchmakers to access the movement. The Triplock winding crown, fitted with a triple waterproofness system and protected by an integral crown guard, screws down securely against the case. The crystal, which features a Cyclops lens at 3 o’clock for easy reading of the date, is made of virtually scratchproof sapphire and benefits from an anti-reflective coating. The waterproof Oyster case provides optimal protection for the movement it houses.

PERPETUAL CALIBRE 3235  The new version of the Yacht-Master 42 is equipped with calibre 3235, a movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex that was released in 2015 and has been fitted on this model since its launch in 2019. A distillation of technology, this self-winding mechanical movement delivers outstanding performance in terms of precision, power reserve, convenience and reliability.   Calibre 3235 incorporates the patented Chronergy escapement, which combines high energy efficiency with great dependability. Made of nickel-phosphorus, this escapement is resistant to strong magnetic fields. The movement is fitted with a blue Parachrom hairspring, manufactured by Rolex in a paramagnetic alloy. The hairspring offers great stability in the face of temperature variations as well as high resistance to shocks. It is equipped with a Rolex overcoil, ensuring the calibre’s regularity in any position. The oscillator is mounted on the Rolex-designed, patented high-performance Paraflex shock absorbers, increasing the movement’s shock resistance. The oscillating weight is now fitted with an optimized ball bearing. Calibre 3235 is equipped with a self-winding system via a Perpetual rotor. Thanks to its barrel architecture and the escapement’s superior efficiency, the power reserve of calibre 3235 extends to approximately 70 hours.

OYSTER BRACELET AND OYSTERLOCK SAFETY CLASP  The new version of the Yacht-Master 42, made from RLX titanium, is fitted on an Oyster bracelet. Developed at the end of the 1930s, this three-piece link bracelet remains the most universal in the Oyster Perpetual collection and is known for its robustness. The Oyster bracelet of this new version of the Yacht-Master 42 features the Oysterlock folding safety clasp, which prevents accidental opening. It is also equipped with the Easylink comfort extension link, developed by Rolex, which allows the wearer to easily adjust the bracelet length by approximately 5 mm. The Oyster bracelet in RLX titanium also includes patented ceramic inserts – designed by the brand – inside the links to enhance its flexibility on the wrist and its longevity.

SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER CERTIFICATION Like all Rolex watches, the Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 42 is covered by the Superlative Chronometer certification redefined by Rolex in 2015. This designation testifies that every watch leaving the brand’s workshops has successfully undergone a series of tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratories according to its own criteria, following the official certification of the movements by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC). The in-house certification tests apply to the fully assembled watch, after casing the movement, guaranteeing superlative performance on the wrist in terms of precision, power reserve, waterproofness and self-winding. The precision of a Rolex Superlative Chronometer is of the order of −2 /+2 seconds per day – the rate deviation tolerated by the brand for a finished watch is significantly smaller than that accepted by COSC for official certification of the movement alone. The Superlative Chronometer status is symbolized by the green seal that comes with every Rolex watch and is coupled with an international five-year guarantee.

What is the Rolex Superlative Chronometer Standard and why does it matter?

What is the Rolex Superlative Chronometer Standard and why does it matter?

Editor’s note: Timekeeping standards are suddenly cool again. Omega has been steadily touting the benefits of their Master Chronometer certification, Patek has their own standards, and Rolex recently upped their game with the Superlative Chronometer Standard. But what is it? This article from a while back explains everything you need to know.

rolex-superlative-chronometer-details

Since 1951, nearly every watch leaving Rolex’s Geneva facility has been a certified Chronometer, and from 1957 onwards, Rolex has been using the term “superlative” on their dials to describe that their watches don’t just meet chronometer standards, but exceed them. Design purists might bemoan the resulting text-heavy dials that declare an Oyster to be “superlative chronometer officially certified”, but Rolex’s nigh-unimpeachable reputation for quality and accuracy has a lot invested in these words. In fact, in late 2015, the brand quietly updated their Superlative Chronometer Standards to make them even more stringent.

2016-Rolex-Air-King-116900-3

If you were lucky enough to get your hands on a steel Daytona or a recent Datejust 41, Rolex guarantees your watch is accurate to -2/+2 seconds per day, after casing, compared to the -4/+6 per day for the uncased movement that COSC requires, or the 0/+5 in Omega’s Master Certification. Rolex’s continued commitment to testing and accuracy doesn’t just show they recognise the importance of reliability, but that they deem it vital to be more accurate than the competition.

Rolex-Calibre-3255

Rolex determines this accuracy through a series of external and internal tests. Completed movements are still sent off for official COSC certification. After this, the movement is cased and then tested using (according to brand literature) “unparalleled testing methodologies and new high-technology equipment to certify each of its watches (…) according to its own criteria which exceed watchmaking norms and standards”. These tests guarantee the performance of the watch with relation to precision, power reserve, waterproofness and self-winding, using methods that simulate real world wear and conditions. On top of that, the warranty accompanying this standard (represented by the green seal that comes with your watch) has been bumped up to five years.

Rolex-oyster-perpetual-39-JR-6

What does this mean to those of us who buy and wear Rolex? Well, it means that the people who made your watch spent a lot of time and money ensuring it would provide you with class-leading accuracy and reliability now and in the future. To commit to this level of quality across Rolex’s high production is, frankly, an incredible technical achievement because it leaves so little (four seconds, to be precise) margin for error.

rolex-superlative-chronometer

However, if you were inclined to be critical, you might have noticed that aside from the COSC testing, all the other testing and tweaking is internal, and not validated by an external authority, unlike Omega’s METAS-certified testing, nor does Rolex make the individual results of each watch publicly available. Rolex has never been particularly renowned for their transparency, so the fact it’s opted to keep its methods private isn’t that surprising, but given the brand’s track record and the difficulty in obtaining one, I don’t think it’s a cause for concern for most.

Master Chronometer vs Superlative Chronometer

Chronometer

Accuracy has always been an important point of pride and marketing for luxury watch brands. For over a century, the term “chronometer” has been used to denote timepieces that meet a high standard of precision. Chronometer certification began in Switzerland in the early 1900s to assure consumers that a watch could keep accurate time.

Traditionally, chronometer designation was granted by the COSC, or Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres. This independent agency puts uncased watch movements through a series of tests over multiple days to measure their timekeeping accuracy under different positions and temperatures. If a movement successfully passes these tests within set tolerance levels, it is certified as a chronometer.

However, some watch brands have recently developed their own even more rigorous certification processes to indicate a new level of timekeeping excellence. The popular watch brand Omega debuted its “METAS” certification in 2015 to signify watches that exceeded COSC standards. Not to be outdone, Rolex introduced its “Superlative Chronometer” certification the following year.

Both the Master Chronometer and Superlative Chronometer labels indicate meticulous in-house testing of fully assembled watches, not just bare movements. They represent a new era of accuracy standards for luxury timepieces. In this article, we will compare these two precision certifications and the state-of-the-art facilities and procedures used to obtain them for luxury watch collections and brands .

Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres (COSC)

COSC

To understand Master Chronometer and Superlative Chronometer designations, it helps first to explain the baseline COSC certification process. COSC, or the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute , was established in 1973 to standardize chronometer certification on behalf of the Swiss watch industry.

Brands send their uncased movements to COSC facilities to undergo precision testing. The movements are individually tested over 5 different positions and 3 different temperatures for a period of 15 days. The results are measured against COSC requirements for an average daily precision between -4 to +6 seconds per day. Movements that successfully maintain accuracy within this range across all the tests are officially certified as chronometers.

This independent verification by COSC is widely respected and considered an achievement of watchmaking excellence. However, some brands strive for even better performance than the baseline COSC standards. Omega and Rolex have developed their own in-house facilities and certification processes to assure consumers of master-level chronometric precision in real-world conditions.

Omega’s Master Chronometer Certification

Omega Moon Watch

In 2015, Omega unveiled its new Meteorite-Crater proven technology and facilities for Master Chronometer certification. This process tests fully assembled watches, not just bare movements like COSC. Omega simulates real-world conditions to verify performance and durability.

The Master Chronometer testing protocol has 8 separate tests. It starts with COSC-certified movements, then further evaluates the cased watch. Some tests focus on accuracy, like timing precision, power reserve, and deviation. Others test resilience, like exposure to 15,000 gauss magnetic fields and temperatures between 0 to 50 degrees Celsius.

If a watch passes all Master Chronometer tests within specified tolerance levels, it is certified to perform with precision, magnetic resistance, and reliability. Omega has developed special alloys and movements like the Co-Axial calibers to meet these Master Chronometer standards. This certification verifies chronometric excellence for the entire watch, not just its movement.

Rolex’s In-House Testing

Image for Sell Your Luxury Watch Section

Not to be outdone, the Swiss-made watch brand Rolex introduced its own in-house certification called the Superlative Chronometer. While similar in name, the Superlative Chronometer process has some key differences from Omega’s Master Chronometer.

Rolex built new state-of-the-art facilities next to its headquarters in Switzerland for its proprietary testing. The Superlative Chronometer certification puts assembled Rolex watches through a battery of tests that simulate conditions watches encounter in real-world use.

Testing includes exposures to temperatures between -10 and +50 degrees Celsius, humidity levels of 95%, and magnetic fields up to 10,000 gauss. The watches are tested at different stages of assembly for precision, waterproofness, self-winding capabilities, power reserve and other functions. Strict performance criteria must be met across all areas for Superlative Chronometer certification.

This in-house verification provides assurance to Rolex owners that their watch has been rigorously tested beyond generic chronometer standards. Rolex takes pride in its self-sufficiency and vertically integrated manufacturing capabilities that allow for this level of quality control.

Key Differences

Rolex and OMEGA

While the Master Chronometer and Superlative Chronometer labels have similarities, there are some important distinctions between Omega and Rolex’s proprietary precision certifications:

  • Testing state: Master Chronometer tests fully assembled watches. Superlative Chronometer tests watches at different states of assembly.
  • Magnetic resistance: Master Chronometer tests up to 15,000 gauss resistance. Superlative Chronometer tests up to 10,000 gauss.
  • Temperature range: Master Chronometer tests between 0 to 50 degrees C. Superlative Chronometer between -10 to +50 degrees C.
  • Timing precision: Master Chronometer requires -0 to +5 seconds/day average. Superlative Chronometer is -2 to +2 seconds/day.
  • Power reserve testing: This is tested under Master Chronometer but not specified for Superlative Chronometer.
  • Waterproofness: Superlative Chronometer includes waterproofness testing, which Master Chronometer does not.

While both are highly demanding certifications, Rolex generally sets tighter precision tolerances. Omega focuses more on magnetic resilience and real-world conditions. But both represent impressive technical achievements in chronometric performance.

Other Watch Brands That Have In-House Certifications

Rolex Watches Caliber 3135 Movement

Omega and Rolex are not the only brands with proprietary chronometer designations. Other watchmakers have also developed in-house certifications to verify standards beyond generic COSC testing.

Tudor, Rolex’s sister brand , introduced its “MT5612 Chronometer” certification in 2015 for its in-house movements. Like Rolex’s process, it tests the cased watch in multiple positions with tolerance of -2 to +4 seconds/day. Breitling uses the name “Chronometer” for its in-house testing, which focuses on precision, robustness and water resistance. Cased watches must pass a 5-step process not too dissimilar from Omega’s Master Chronometer.

TAG Heuer has its “Master Chronometer Calibre Heuer 02” certified in-house before encasement. They are then further tested after casing for accuracy, waterproofness and automatic winding.

The Panerai luxury watch brand has developed sophisticated equipment at its Neuchatel manufacture for in-house testing beyond COSC standards. Watch certification takes place periodically, even after the sale.

Patek Philippe is known for their meticulous quality control and precision in watchmaking. Since 2009, the company has implemented the Patek Philippe Seal, their own independent certification that ensures only the highest quality watches leave their workshops. To receive the Patek Philippe Seal, each watch must pass over 500 separate quality tests, going well beyond the standards of the prestigious Geneva Seal.

While not as widely marketed as Omega and Rolex’s labels, these other in-house certifications show that striving for utmost chronometric precision has become an industry-wide priority. Technologies and testing capabilities continue to rapidly evolve.

The Master Chronometer and Superlative Chronometer designations represent a leap forward for chronometric excellence in the watch industry. While the trusted COSC certification will likely remain the baseline standard, Omega and Rolex have paved the way for more rigorous in-house testing.

Both brands have invested heavily in state-of-the-art facilities to simulate and verify real-world performance. This allows them to hold assembled watches to a higher chronometric standard than generic COSC-tested movements. Though there are slight differences in testing parameters, Master Chronometer and Superlative Chronometer certifications prove these watches have passed intense examinations well beyond the norm.

Of course, for most buyers, such nuanced precision is somewhat academic. But this technical quest for perfection is part of the magic of high watchmaking. As materials and technologies continue advancing, these types of proprietary certifications will likely only grow more advanced. Omega and Rolex’s friendly rivalry spurs the whole industry towards ever-higher levels of timekeeping accuracy and customer assurance.

COMPARISON: The Master Chronometer VS Superlative Chronometer.

Luxury watchmakers are always upping the ante to lead the pack with the most accurate mechanical watches in the world. Find out how these two market leaders do it.

Let's compare the Omega Master Chronometer VS Rolex Superlative Chronometer

With a benchmark like this, you can decide for yourself which is better. But first, for those who need it, let's answer the most popular questions about this topic.

What is Chronometer? (pronounced chro·NOM·e·ter, similar to the pronunciation of  thermometer ) It is a pedigree of sorts that is awarded to highly accurate mechanical watches and some quartz watches by a chronometric institute called COSC.

What is the difference between a chrono graph and a chronometer? A Chronograph is not a designation from COSC. Rather, it's a mechanical feature (or complication as it's called in watchmaking) that provides a stopwatch function to a watch.

What is COSC?  It is the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute and is an acronym for its French name Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres. It is a neutral third-party lab that gauges the precision of a watch to ensure they meet very high standards.

What is a Master Chronometer? It is a combination of two pedigrees, one by COSC and another by another lab called METAS. It is currently only available on Omega watches and indicates that the watch has not only high precision but high standards on many important factors.

What is a Superlative Chronometer?  It is a combination of two pedigrees found only on Rolex watches, one by COSC and another by Rolex.

Let's look at how watches with these titles or designations are similar. Simply put, they are both required to be certified chronometers and go through the standard COSC ISO 3159 testing before any further tests are done. COSC testing involves only the watch movement/caliber itself, and for two consecutive weeks, the movements are tested at three different temperatures and five different positions.

By the time the movement received its chronometer designation, it had reached an accuracy of -4/+6 seconds per day. Not happy with that standard, Rolex and Omega felt they could work on post-COSC certification precision. Omega hires another 3rd party lab called METAS and Rolex is of the opinion that if you want a job done right, do it yourself, and this means that they do this in-house as opposed to a 3rd part lab until they get the results that they want. Read more to find out what this entails and what type of accuracy you can then expect from both watchmakers.

Rolex Superlative Chronometer

Rolex took the chronometer to the next level with an extra round of examination and fine-tuning. Once the watch movement is returned to manufacture, Rolex cases the caliber, and a series of tests designed to simulate the use of the watch when worn in a "real-life" situation is conducted followed by fine-tuning until the accuracy of -2/+2 is achieved. That is at least twice as accurate as a COSC chronometer!

Once this is accomplished, the watch is ready to be shipped out with a new Superlative Chronometer designation.

The first Rolex movement to ever go through Superlative Chronometer testing and get the new and improved esteemed designation was the Rolex 3255 movement found in the Rolex Day-Date 40mm.

They had since decided to expand their highly strict ±2 testing to every one of their watches . They had since attached to each watch they sell that meets this standard in accuracy and precision a seal saying "Superlative Certified" on one side and "Rolex SA Geneve" on the other.

OMEGA Master Chronometer

OMEGA , eager to rise to the challenge, embarked on a mission to state its dominance in chronometric precision with a new chronometric precision designation known as the Master Chronometer .

The first OMEGA watch that was given the designation of Master Chronometer was the Globemaster which is part of the Omega Constellation series. A testing institute called the Federal Institute of Metrology , also called METAS conducts the testing after the watch receives a COSC certification.

METAS labs take the watches and have their movements tested for a number of things in order to reach a minimum precision of 0/+5 seconds per day.

  • The first of these tests gauges how it reacts to being exposed to 1.5 Tesla / 15,000 gauss magnetic fields while in two different positions.
  • Then the caliber is cased and put into a watch, and they test how it handles the same fifteen-thousand gauss magnetic fields.
  • They then expose it to 15,000 gausses for a full 24 hours and test its daily precision for any deviation.
  • They then look at the average daily accuracy of the watch over a period of 96 hours while alternating positions and environmental changes such as temperature fluctuations. The Power reserve is then examined to ensure it runs at full mast for the projected capacity.
  • They then look for any deviance of accuracy in any of six different positions.
  • The watches are then tested again in 6 positions for any chronometric discrepancies in time while the power reserve is between 33% and 100%.
  • The watch's water resistance is tested by immersing it in water and increasing the pressure until it reaches the intended depth of water resistance.

How Much it Cost to Travel to Kyiv: Detailed Prices

With a location that is far off any normal European tour route, Kyiv struggles for Western tourists because you have to deliberately be going there rather than just drifting through on your way elsewhere. English isn’t too common at this point either, though most people report being able to get by without much problem.

What is the Average Price of a Hotel in Kyiv?

Hotels are cheap, at least, so those who make the trip can stretch their funds quite a long way if they eat and drink like a local rather than like a tourist. Inflation in Ukraine has been a problem since 2014, so nominal prices might be higher, though that tends to go along with a better exchange rate for visitors.

Kyiv Hotel Seasons

Kyiv is a business city more than a holiday city so the high season actually runs most of the year except during January, July, and August, except for a few weeks when nothing is going on in between. The other months (January, July, and August) are low season, at least in the higher-end Kyiv hotels. Hostels won’t change prices much through the year.

Kyiv Weather advice

While Kyiv isn’t usually as cold in winter as some might imagine, it’s definitely a time to avoid since there will be a snow cover from November through early March. Summers are warm and rarely blazing hot and spring and autumns tend to be mild without much rainfall to worry about at any time of year.
