"We have developed a corporate environmental policy and implement effective programs as an integral part of our business strategy," Rangoonwala says. "On race weekends, we monitor marine animal activity in the race area with observers on boats, on the land and in a helicopter reporting any sightings such as dolphins, manatees and turtles. They have the authority to stop the racing if necessary.”

“Sarasota is an idyllic venue with a rich, storied history of powerboat racing," says P1 USA Championship Manager Michelle Petro. "We will be celebrating a special milestone on the Saturday when we stage our 700th race since we began racing 20 years ago. The Need for speed… The real stars of the Suncoast Race, of course, are the offshore racing boats, some of which reach speeds of over 100 mph on the straight-aways of this six and a half mile long race course off Lido Key Beach .

This Offshore Boat Racing Spectacle is absolutely free to attend and open to the public...you won't find any ticket sellers and ticket takers here!

There has even been a "Miss Super Boat Grand Prix” Bikini Contest as part of the Grand Prix Fan Fest in the past. The contest has been an "on again, off again" event with the festival and may return in the future. We keep the page on line as a tribute to the past with hopes that it returns in the future.

The Sarasota Offshore Powerboat Grand Prix Boat Races, now moved to September. and the Suncoast Summer Festival, when held together were two one of the biggest and most high profile annual events on my Sarasota Events Calendar .

Feel the Power... And while offshore boat racing is underway it seems there is another race going on overhead, as numerous helicopters swoop over the offshore racing boats, keeping a watchful eye out for marine animals, as well as an eye on the boats and drivers, with emergency divers and medical staff aboard the copters for quick medical response in case of a mishap on the water.

A view to a thrill… The best place to view the sites of the Sarasota Boat Races, The Suncoast Offshore Racing Grand Prix, is from Lido Key Beach, as the race course runs from New Pass (north of Lido Key/south of Longboat Key) to Big Pass (south of Lido Key/north of Siesta Key). Lined up along Lido Public Beach, you’ll be able to see every bit of offshore power boat racing at it’s finest.

Offshore powerboat racing off Sarasota Florida

Hear the Roar... Offshore power boat racing is an awesome spectacle to witness and the Sarasota Boat Races can attract crowds numbering 50,000 along Lido Beach. While crowds may be large (as well as enthusiastically estimated!) it is spread out, friendly and quite comfortable, especially in the 90-plus degree heat. And with the water right in front of you, many spectators choose to kill two birds with one stone by staying cool in the water while watching the offshore races from…offshore!

Offshore boat racing fans

It’s a festive atmosphere up and down Lido Beach from as early as 5 a.m. - 6 a.m. when the most die-hard of the fans arrive early for good parking spots and to stake out their position on the beach for what they think will be the best vantage point to see the offshore racing boats.

Offshore racing on Lido Key Beach Florida

But, despite the crowds, there are plenty of places on the beach or in the water from which to get a  great  view of the race.

The beach is filled with brightly colored umbrellas and picnic shades, along with offshore boat racing fans that bring grills that fill the beach side with the aromas of hamburgers, hot dogs and other barbecue grilled treats.

Here's a short video about the Sarasota Boat Races:

(Speakers on!)

It all resembles a giant tailgate style party with friendly fans, food, fun and the fastest offshore racing boats on water!

Tips: While parking along Ben Franklin Drive (the beach side street) and at the Lido Beach Public parking lot fills up early and fast, there is still plenty of parking at the free lots around St. Armand’s circle. And it's a close enough walk to the Sarasota Boat Races on Lido Key Beach. If you do park at one of St. Armand’s free parking lots, be prepared for a walk to the beach, and at the end of June/early July it can be a really hot walk, although it’s only a few blocks.

Protected by Copyscape

Alternate Idea: (The first year I attended the Sarasota Boat Races a friend and I put our two bikes on a bike carrier on his SUV, parked on the other side of St. Armand's Circle and bicycled to the beach. But we traveled lightly, without coolers and conveniences! Although one could always ride with a backpack on or carry a small portable cooler along.)

More Tips: Bring a cooler (on wheels, if you’ll be walking a few blocks) with food and drinks, a sun umbrella and beach chairs, lots of sunscreen and a hat to protect your head and face from the sun’s direct rays and a camera and/or binoculars so you can get an even better view of the Suncoast offshore racers. Clothing: Wear light-weight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothes or a swimsuit and t-shirt.

Remember: this is Florida in late June and early July. It’s sunny. It’s hot. I’ve seen reports of peoples’ hair catching on fire, although I’ve been unable to personally confirm those reports! Take appropriate precautions for you and your family as far as the heat and sun go.

By the way, over the years, proceeds from the Sarasota Boat Races Offshore Racing Grand Prix Festival have provided over $20 million dollars for the construction of facilities serving physically and mentally challenged individuals. That’s a good thing!

Directions: To get to Lido Key Beach from Sarasota take Rt. 41 through the bay front/downtown area to the John Ringling Bridge. Go over the bridge (southwest) to St. Armand’s Circle and bear to the left around the Circle (west) toward Lido Key Beach. Turn left (south) on to Ben Franklin Drive and look for parking spots on the street or at the Lido Key Beach public parking lot, south on Ben Franklin Drive. If no parking is available, double back to St. Armand’s Key and look for free parking lots around the rear of the shops on St Armand’s Circle (look for the free parking signs around the Circle).

Powerboat P1 CEO, Azam Rangoonwala commented: “Our aim is to deliver outstanding race action and entertainment. What you need to know about Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix and July 4th fireworks

Sarasota police department outlines dos and donts for the boat races on sarasota bay.

Here is a guide to the weekend provided by the Sarasota Police Department.

Road closures and parking

  • Closed from 11:59 p.m. Thursday, June 29, until 10 p.m. Sunday, July 2.
  • P-1 Racing Pit Party 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. June 30
  • The Pit Party will take place in the dry pit area in the Van Wezel parking lot.

NOTE: Due to limited parking spaces, carpooling is highly encouraged. Illegally parked vehicles are subject to ticketing. Vehicles blocking private driveways are subject to towing. Anticipate long delays from the beach area after the races. When leaving the beach viewing area, expect an exit time of more than one hour.

Vehicles not removed by the posted time will be towed at the owner’s expense. For information on towed vehicles, please call Upman’s Towing at (941) 365-7084.

Centennial Park / Boat Ramp Closures 11:59 p.m. Thursday, June 29 to 10 p.m. Sunday, July 2.

This area will be the staging area for the Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix. There will be no boat ramp access during this time. A suggested alternative boat ramp includes Ken Thompson Park on City Island and various boat ramps in Manatee County and southern Sarasota County.

New Pass Closure

On the water, New Pass will be closed Saturday, July 1 and Sunday, July 2 during the Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix. The pass will be closed west of the New Pass bridge. Boaters will still be able to access the cove.

Plan ahead when travelling

AAA Tow To Go: AAA Tow to Go Program will be available to ensure those celebrating the holiday get home safely. The free, confidential, local ride is within a 10-mile radius of a safe location. This is offered beginning at 6 p.m. Friday, June 30 until 6 a.m. Wednesday, July 5. Call 1-855-TOW-2-GO (1-855-286-9246) or visit https://member.acg.aaa.com/fl/driving-safety/tow-to-go.html It is never OK to drink and drive. Even if you’ve had only one alcoholic beverage, designate a sober driver or plan to use public transportation or a ride-sharing service to get home safely.

Lido Beach holiday hours

The Sarasota County Sea Turtle Protection Ordinance requires that all beach furniture and equipment be removed from the beach nightly, until sunrise the following morning. According to amended Sarasota City Code Sec. 22-4, Lido Key public beaches will be closed to beachgoers from 11 p.m. until sunrise. This means Lido Key beach will be closed to all beachgoers, race spectators, and beach equipment until sunrise, which is approximately 6:30 a.m., during events. The Sarasota Police Department will enforce closure times to protect the safety of all beachgoers, including the marine turtle kind. To protect the environment, spectators are asked to stay off dunes along Lido Beach.

Dogs are not allowed on Lido Beach.

Beach Equipment & Marine Turtle Protection In addition to expanded marine, foot and vehicle patrols, the Sarasota Police Department will be protecting public safety during events by posting signs prohibiting beachgoers from storing and leaving unattended personal property on Lido Beach, according to Sarasota City Code Sec. 21-44 . This is for protecting all beachgoers and their belongings to help ensure a safe and orderly race and beach-going experience. Beach furniture and other beach equipment, toys, or trash, left on the beach overnight during marine turtle nesting season can pose a serious entanglement hazard and obstacle for marine turtles and their hatchlings.

The Sarasota County Sea Turtle Protection Ordinance requires any “temporary structures, including but not limited to beach chairs, umbrellas, and cabanas, which have the potential for entrapment of marine turtles and which may interfere with the use of the natural beach environment for nesting habitat, be removed from the beach nightly, from sunset to sunrise.” Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium, the Sarasota Police Department, Sarasota County Parks Department, and P1 Offshore organizers are partnering to protect endangered marine turtles and ask for the public’s help in making this a safe event for all.

Wildlife Protection The Sarasota Police Department is conducting enhanced enforcement measures to ensure the conservation and protection of several threatened species of native wildlife of Lido Key, efforts complemented by the work of Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium. Marine Turtles, Black Skimmers, Least Terns, and Snowy Plovers all share Lido Beach and are protected under state and federal law. Beachgoers should be aware of posted signage and fencing and stay away from marine turtle nests and seabird nesting zones. It is important not to enter any posted areas and to avoid any behaviors that may disturb the wildlife.

Disturbances can cause birds to leave their eggs and chicks unattended, making them vulnerable to predators and overheating. Sarasota Police officers will collaborate with Audubon and Mote Marine volunteers to patrol nesting locations to protect the beautiful Florida wildlife on Lido Key. Anyone who observes any stranded, sick, or injured marine turtles or mammals can contact Mote’s Stranding Investigations Program, a 24-hour response program in Sarasota and Manatee counties, at (888) 345-2335.

Fireworks on Tuesday

Bayfront Fireworks Spectacular will be 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Sarasota Bayfront Park, 1 Marina Plaza, Sarasota.

6-venue World Championship in the United States will build towards an international series in 2024.

Fleet of 8 class 1 boats expected to compete in this season’s championship., new event in the city of sheboygan on lake michigan with season finale in miami..

Powerboat P1 has today announced the UIM Class 1 World Championship race calendar for the 2023 season, which sees the series heading to Wisconsin for the first time and returning to favourite locations in Florida and Indiana. A fleet of eight Class 1 boats is expected to compete in the six-venue championship from May through to September.

offshore powerboat racing 2023 sarasota

In October 2020, the Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM) assigned to Powerboat P1 the international rights to Class 1 racing in an exclusive ten-year agreement that includes organisational and promotion rights to the world championship. However, with the pandemic seriously impacting the 2021 season by preventing overseas teams from traveling to the United States, it wasn’t until this year that P1 was able to action its plans to attract more race teams and grow the series through social media and building the worldwide television audience.

Racing will kick off at Cocoa Beach on Florida’s Atlantic Coast in late May, before moving to the Gulf Coast at the end of June when the Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix will celebrate its 38 th  anniversary. In August the series will head north to Indiana for the Michigan City Great Lakes Grand Prix, and a new event in the Wisconsin city of Sheboygan on the western shore of Lake Michigan will host the Mercury Racing MidWest Challenge.

Featuring the top categories of U.S. powerboat racing including Class 1, the three-day festival is expected to attract more than thirty teams to race along the Sheboygan waterfront. In early September the Class 1 fleet will be back on the Gulf Coast in St. Petersburg, and P1 CEO Azam Rangoonwala is in advanced discussions to stage a season finale in Miami. “We raced in this iconic city in 2018 and returning this year with the Class 1 boats would create an outstanding climax to the 2023 championship,” said Rangoonwala.

offshore powerboat racing 2023 sarasota

“As we look ahead to the 2023 season, I can confirm that both the M CON Racing Team and Sudrheim Offshore Racing will be joining the series to give us an international field of eight boats with teams representing Australia, Sweden, Norway and, of course, the United States,” said P1 CEO Azam Rangoonwala. “The M CON team will compete in a fully branded Monster Energy boat. This new canopied Skater 438 catamaran is the first purpose-built Class 1 boat for more than a decade. With Sudrheim Racing flying the flag for Norway next year, we can look forward to another Scandinavian team battling for the world title.”

offshore powerboat racing 2023 sarasota

This season’s championship will build towards an international race calendar in 2024 with host venues in Scandinavia and the Middle East being added to the schedule. In five years’ time, the key goal in P1’s development plan is to have twelve Class 1 teams racing at ten international venues. “Our live streaming this season will be significantly enhanced by the introduction of a new timing system which will show boat positions, distances between boats, speeds and lap times as live graphics,” explained Rangoonwala.

“We’re on an exciting journey and our mantra is to take UIM Class 1 back to the pinnacle of offshore racing,”

added Rangoonwala.

Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix Essentials Day No. 2: Schedules, Storylines And More

With a full day of racing ahead, the 39th annual Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix produced by Powerboat P1 begins at 10 a.m. today with the Mod V and Bracket 400, 300 and 200 classes. That’s a good thing as those classes comprise almost a third of the 64 teams in town for this weekend’s action in Southwest Florida. They will be followed by the eight-team Super Cat class at 11:30 a.m., the six-boat Class 1 fleet at 1 p.m. and the five-team 450R Factory Stock-class teams at 2:30 p.m.

If fans learned anything from yesterday’s races and Class 1 pole-position qualifying round, it’s this: Sometimes completing a day of offshore racing takes every available minute.

But that was yesterday. Here are a few points of intrigue for today:

•  As previously reported, the Mod V-class points battle is close, with current lead held by LSB/Hurricane of Awesomeness and Boatfloater.com and Fastboys Racing are tied for second place in American Power Boat Association Offshore National Championship Series points. New to the LSB cockpit last month in Cocoa Beach, Fla., driver Kyle Miller will team up with Jay Wohltman, his regular throttleman in the Whoa Moma Mod V raceboat, as longtime LSB throttleman Kevin Smith couldn’t be in Sarasota this weekend.

The question isn’t whether Miller and with Wohltman improve upon the results Miller and Smith delivered in Cocoa Beach—first place is kind of tough to top—but if today’s LSB new cockpit pairing can match that performance.

• The biggest question in the Class 1 contest that will follow is simple: How many teams will finish? Yesterday’s qualifying round was bumpy as mechanical gremlins, rather most performances, stole the show. Still, hope springs eternal in offshore powerboat racing, especially when you have the likes of throttleman Steve Curtis sharing the cockpit of Huski Ice Spritz with driver Brit Lilly and throttleman John Tomlinson racing alongside driver Travis Pastrana (yes, that Travis Pastrana) in Pothole Heroes .

offshore powerboat racing 2023 sarasota

The 222 Offshore Australia team is prepped, ready and more than a little motivated for a win today.

That said, both teams will have to get by driver Darren Nicholson and Giovanni Carpitella in 222 Offshore Australia , as the truly international cockpit duo smoked the six-mile course in qualifying yesterday to claim today’s pole position.

• The Super Cat-class M CON/Monster Energy team prevailed in Thunder On Cocoa Beach, the second race of the five-contest APBA series and the first of six races in the Union International Motonautique Class 1 World Championship Series. The Valder Yachts/Pro Floors Racing team bested M CON/Monster Energy on its Lake of the Ozarks home-water in the LOTO Powerfest event produced by the Offshore Powerboat Association . Though the Central Missouri contest isn’t part of the APBA series, it is on the Super Cat owners group’s internal championship schedule. So it matters.

Short version? A “rubber match” of sorts is on the line today for the M CON/Monster Energy and Valder Yachts/Pro Floors Racing teams.

• Though SV Offshore Racing team owner/throttleman Vinnie Diorio has yet to see the success of M CON/Monster Energy owner/throttleman Tyler Miller or owner/driver Wayne Valder of Valder Yachts/Pro Floors Racing , he is every bit as committed to the sport, which the Wisconsinite entered three years ago. To that end, he brought on rookie driver Matt Jamniczky this season who, said Diorio, “has been getting better and better every time he gets in the boat.”

As for Jamniczky, he’s exactly what the sport needs—humble, well-spoken, charming and totally into it . He’s not just good for offshore racing’s present. He’s good for its future.

offshore powerboat racing 2023 sarasota

Matt Jamniczky and his wife, Jennifer, are welcome additions to the Super Cat family.

• There five 450R Factory Stock teams set to take the final green flag of the day. If today’s weather and water conditions follow yesterday’s pattern, the stiff onshore afternoon breeze and frothy water could make for a wild and wooly race—just as they did for the Super Stock class contest on Saturday.

Today’s Predictions And Wild Guesses For the record, I had a slightly better outing when it came to yesterday’s prognostications for the Super Stock race than my friend and speedonthewater.com colleague Eric Colby. Two of the three teams I picked to finish on the podium actually did , whereas Colby had one, CMR Construction and Roofing , finish in the money.

Also for the record? Neither of us were even close to the picking the correct finishing order.

Today, we’re just going to pick winners in each class. It’s far less democratic and far more “risky” in terms of offending those teams not included, but a whole lot more fun. So here goes.

• The father-and-son Boatfloater.com cockpit duo of Steve and Stephen Kildahl gets my nod for today’s victory in the Mod V class. Not only is Sarasota home-water for them, the elder Kildahl has competed in every Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix produced in its 39-year history.

offshore powerboat racing 2023 sarasota

For Mod V-class Boatfloater.com team owner Steve Kildahl (left) and his wife, Kim, Sarasota is home.

• In Super Cat, I’m going with Wayne Valder and throttleman Grant Bruggemann in Valder Yachts/Pro Floors Racing . Valder, who I bumped into last night at the CMR-sponsored party at the Sarasota Hyatt Regency, could be the most joyful person in the sport, maybe even on the planet. But joie de vivre never should be mistaken for indifference to results. The guy is fired up.

Plus, Sarasota is home-water for his throttleman.

• Though Huski Ice Spritz versus Pothole Heroes is a battle of titans and worthy of the buzz it’s getting, I’ll be shocked —mechanical issues be damned—if 222 Offshore Australia doesn’t claim victory in Class 1. Not only did the team lose the checkered flag on the final turn of the final lap the contest it was dominating in Cocoa Beach, it was unmatched in yesterday’s qualifying round.

offshore powerboat racing 2023 sarasota

TS Motorsports driver Taylor Scism is ready to get back in the cockpit with throttleman John Tomlinson.

• Reunited in the TS Motorsports cockpit with throttleman John Tomlinson, driver Taylor Scism, who I briefly caught up with on Friday night during the block in the dry pits, is eager to share the cockpit with her original 450R Factory Stock teammate. Tomlinson drove a brilliant race—something I’ve come to expect but never take for granted from offshore racing’s GOAT—in yesterday’s Super Stock race and he’ll hop into the cockpit with Scism fresh from the Class 1 contest. On paper at least, it’s tough to see another team beating them.

In the Mod V contest, Colby is going with Steve Miklos and Steve Fehrmann in SunPrint/Hooters , like Boatfloater.com another local team, to take the checkered flag. “They’ve been running well this year and seem to have the gremlins solved,” he said.

And that is the only prediction for today’s winners where we differ. Colby, who has covered the sport far longer than I have (he was my boss when I started at Powerboat magazine in the early 1990s), also believes 222 Offshore Australia will run to Class 1 glory. “They’re always fast and their luck has to turn at some point,” he explained. “Plus they’re on pole position.”

ENJOY YESTERDAYS COVERAGE FROM THE 39TH ANNUAL SARASOTA GRAND PRIX

Like this reporter, he has Valder Yachts/Pro Floors Racing taking the Super Cat win. “After watching them dominate last year’s Sarasota race in person, I can’t go against them,” he said.

Last but far from least, Colby sees TS Motorsports besting the four other teams in the 450R Factory Stock class, “Taylor is going to want to prove she’s a champion after the boat finished second in Cocoa Beach,” he said.

My hope is that we have as much luck as did we did yesterday with our picks. Luck, of course, is the operative word in that sentence

And that’s something we wish it to all teams competing today.

offshore powerboat racing 2023 sarasota

If the 450R Factory Stock teams face the same mid-afternoon conditions the Super Stock class did yesterday (above), today’s contest could be a rowdy affair.

Editor’s note:  Livestream coverage of today’s racing will be broadcasted on  P1 Offshore Facebook page  and the  Powerboat P1 YouTube channel .
