What is a Gulet?

A Gulet is a traditional Turkish wooden sailing yacht that is designed explicitly for cruising along the beautiful Turkish coast. These vessels are known for their elegant design, spacious interiors, and comfortable accommodations. Gulets typically range in size from 15 to 40 meters and can accommodate anywhere from 6 to 20 passengers.

Gulets are built with a combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern amenities, offering a perfect blend of authenticity and comfort. Each Gulet is unique in terms of design and layout. Still, they generally feature cosy cabins with en-suite bathrooms, a spacious deck for sunbathing and dining, and a fully equipped kitchen where the onboard chef prepares delicious meals.

The beauty of a gulet lies in its ability to provide an intimate and personalized cruising experience. Unlike larger cruise ships, gulets can access smaller and more secluded bays and coves, allowing passengers to explore hidden gems inaccessible to other vessels. With their friendly and experienced crew, gulets offer a warm and welcoming atmosphere, making you feel at home throughout your journey.

TURKEY GULET YACHT

A gulet is a classic wooden, motorized, and sailing boat that is perfect for long sea voyages and close-to-land cruises.

Traditional Turkish gulets are made-to-order boats that skilled artisans construct from wood. Because they provide a very comfortable cruising experience, gulets, often referred to as motor sailboats, are perfect for coastal excursions and lengthy sea cruises.

We are aware that the first gulet construction began in Turkey’s Bodrum region. However, production is also taking place in Bozburun, Marmaris, Fethiye, and Istanbul as a result of the expanding market and demand.

Types of Gulets

Gulet: The gulet is the most well-known traditional yacht design for Blue Cruise. The dining table and seating area are located at the back of the gulets.

There is typically a sofa and enough sun pillows out front for everyone. The entrance to the cabins is through this hall, which features a dining table according to the size of the gulet and an interior hall.

The yacht’s round stern causes the guest quarters to be in the front, while the aft side is typically used as the technical area. The ability to sail is marginally superior to that of Aynakic gulets.

The AFT parts of Aynakic gulets are not round, as they are in gulets, but rather are in a structure with raised corners, which is a key characteristic that sets them apart from ordinary gulets.

They typically use this space for the suite room, or what we would refer to as the “master cabin.” All other details are the same as for gulets, with the exception of this characteristic.

Tirhandil is the oldest local wooden boat type with a pointed stern and the best-suited wooden yacht for sailing. Today, the equipment has changed from sloop to lifeboat and from sail to sail; the majority of them are three-corner sails.

They do not construct them on particularly lengthy decks, often between 15 and 25 meters, like other kinds. The same standards apply to their cabins. If you like sailing, this is the best option.

Accommodation on Gulets

Traditional Turkish gulets have evolved in appearance over time. A modern gulet today resembles a high-end floating hotel and can be anywhere between 15 and 55 meters (50 and 180 feet) in length. Gulet length and passenger capacity are not inversely related.

A 20-meter gulet, for instance, might contain three guest cabins or six. The cabins must be smaller in order to accommodate additional cabins of the same size. But in general, taller gulets make up vessels with six or more multi-cabs.

Every cabin on gulets of different shapes and sizes was created with the needs of the passenger in mind, including a bed, wardrobe, separate shower, and toilet.

However, extra comfort amenities like sofa sets, dressers, work desks, and jacuzzis are also available, depending on the size of the rooms and the level of luxury of the boat. There are separate cabins for personnel in the guest cabins.

Gulet Passenger Safety

On gulets, the welfare of the passengers comes first. As a result, each gulet contains numerous fuel and clean water tanks. Additionally, it features a complete set of navigation and safety equipment, including life jackets, fire extinguishers, GSM phones, and VHF radios.

All of these safety precautions and modern technologies prevent any potential emergency and enhance your seaside vacation.

Types of Gulet Charters

Private yacht charter: When you charter a gulet, the entire vessel—along with its crew—is yours for the duration of the rental period. Within the parameters outlined in your rental agreement, you are free to take any route during the rental term.

And you are not restricted to any set timetable; you can plan your vacation however you like. You can purchase our ready-made menu packages and avoid sticking to a typically restricted menu, just as you can shop for your rations.

Renting a private gulet is the perfect choice if you want to spend a luxurious vacation at sea with your family or enjoy the sea and entertainment with close friends.

For a trip you won’t forget and wish to repeat, choose from traditional, classic, luxury, or ultra-luxury yacht charter options to suit your needs and experience.

Cabin rentals : On a shared tour, one or more cabins may be rented. The schedule for the route, lunch times, and meal components remain the same.

The purpose of in-cabin trips, which they typically arrange on classic gulets, is to experience the spirit and joy of the Blue Cruise rather than taking a vacation on a luxury yacht. Let’s say you can’t organize enough groups to rent a private gulet or you go over your budget.

Then, a cabin rental could provide you with a relaxing blue-tour vacation. Renting a cabin will help you make the most of your vacation by allowing you to cruise in style, widen your circle of friends, and meet new acquaintances on the boat.

LUXURY GULET YACHT CHARTER

Where else can you enjoy the peace and quiet of the Blue Sea, which has everything you need to make up for the weariness of the whole year? In the Eastern Mediterranean and Aegean, where there are “Blue Weeks” that never end and warm seas, you can have a great vacation.

Bluetourturkey.com has helped people for a long time. Many of our guests come back every year to see more of the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas. Maybe you’d like to come back and try something new. Nature gives you a great temperature, a calm sea, a lot of history and culture, and delicious food.

During the day, you can walk between boats along the coast and stop in different bays. At night, you can stay in a very quiet bay where no one else is. You can drink something cold and watch the sun go down. Or, if you want, you can tie up your boat in a busy port and enjoy the holiday mood of the people there.

Places like the blue coast of Turkey, the Greek islands, and the eastern shores of the Adriatic, Croatia, and Montenegro are also options.

For tourists looking for the sun, Turkey is very famous. Regular regional flights to international airports in southwest Turkey have made this place very easy to get to. A lot of people also visit places like Bodrum, Marmaris, Fethiye, Gocek, and Antalya during the long summer months. Each of these places is an area that can be part of the boat rental program.

Local tour operators, especially those from other parts of Europe, have a strong interest in the Greek islands in the Aegean Sea. The great thing about a gulet rental vacation is that you can visit some of these islands. Rhodes, Symi, and Kos all have ports that are close to the Turkish shore. These are great islands for people who want to see places in both areas. Between the Greek islands in the west and the many Greek islands in the north, you can mix and match a lot of different options.

Let’s say you have to choose between two routes that are very different. In that case, you can get more information about each area by getting in touch with us.

Turkish Coastline Delights

Turkey’s coastline boasts a mix of picturesque landscapes, pristine beaches, and historical sites. From secluded bays and turquoise waters to charming fishing villages and ancient ruins, there is something for everyone.

Most gulet boats have large cabins with bathrooms, air conditioning, a sun deck, and a nice place to eat. Some gulets also offer additional amenities such as a jacuzzi, water sports equipment, and Wi-Fi.

The Gulet Boat Experience

On a gulet boat, the atmosphere is more intimate and laid-back than on a big cruise ship. With fewer people on board, you’ll be able to get to know your fellow passengers and crew members better.

Gulet cruise holidays offer an incredible holiday experience.  Simply relax and soak up the sun as you cruise crystal clear waters, exploring the remains of ancient Mediterranean civilisations along the stunning coastline of Turkey and the Greek Islands. A gulet cruise is a unique way to enjoy a holiday and explore the beautiful Turkish coastline or Greek Islands.  Diamond Star Experience are experts in gulet cruises with a fabulous selection of vessels and amazing routes with great excursions to choose from. Book a private gulet cruise, a shared cruise or charter a gulet in Turkey, Greece or Croatia now for an incredible holiday experience.

Gulets are traditional Turkish motor yachts, which are beautifully crafted from wood. They have a spacious sundeck, perfect for soaking up the sun and admiring the views as you cruise the clear waters of the Aegean and Mediterranean. A gulet cruise allows you to reach secluded bays not accessible by land and to swim in the clearest of water, away from the shore.

From time to time you will stop off to visit places of interest along your route, the perfect way to explore the remains of the ancient civilizations, which once inhabited this part of the world. Our gulets have between 3 to 10 cabins. All cabins are equipped with air conditioning and en suite facilities including WC, hand basin and shower. Air conditioning cannot be operated whilst gulets are in harbour and will operate usually between 3 to 5 hours per day. We have a huge selection of gulet holidays for your pleasure.  Whether it is a private gulet hire in Turkey or Greece, a luxury gulet holiday in the Ionian Islands, a voyage in the Adriatic, island hopping in the Med or another amazing experience, we have you covered.

They are very attentive and responsive. Eventhough we’re ended up have to take the trip from Demre to Fethiye, but they give as free bus ticket for the make up! The boat trip itself also very nice, the food is great, the view is amazingly beautiful. Due to bad weather, the first 2 days we’re circling around Demre. But they give us few little compensation trip which is very nice.

Gulet Charter

What is a gulet.

Imagine sailing the Mediterranean in a boat that has a Pirates of the Caribbean exterior and a 5-star hotel interior. If you opt for a gulet charter , that’s what you’ll get. Gulet, by definition , is a two-masted or three-masted wooden sailing vessel that has its origins in beautiful Turkey , more precisely in the cities of Bodrum and Marmaris . The word gulet originates from the Italian word goletta which means schooner, which is a synonym for a sailing ship.

Today, gulets have found their place in the nautical tourism and are popular as excursion boats, but that wasn’t their original purpose. In the past, they were used as freight vessels in sea trading in the Black Sea, as well as fishing vessels in the Adriatic. The production of gulets has culminated in the 1970’s and these wooden vessels have become a symbol for sailing tourism in Turkey. Today’s gulets are built using the traditional plank-on-frame method, with improvements in terms of sturdiness and interior design. Modern gulets have all sorts of luxury add-ons, such as Jacuzzis, flat-screen TVs, or private bathrooms.

Why choose a gulet charter .

Gulet charter is an excellent choice if you’re spending your  sailing holidays with a group of friends or family . Since it’s a perfect vessel for sailing in large groups, it can be used for all kinds of social gatherings, like birthday celebrations and weddings, or going on excursions. A gulet can ideally accommodate  10-15 people but is capable of much more. The biggest ones can  fit up to 50 people.

Gulet Charter in Turkey

The spaciousness of a gulet will make sailing comfortable and safe, and even though you will share it with more people, you won’t feel like the boat is cramped. The main advantage of a gulet charter is that it comes fully crewed. The main service includes a cook and a skipper, but there are also  lots of additional services. Since there is always someone on board, gulets are frequently taken care of and are thus in excellent condition. You can enjoy a relaxing gulet cruise holiday and have everything tailored to your needs and desires, without having to worry about cleaning, cooking, or navigating.

Another advantage of a gulet charter is the price. If you want an affordable sailing option, chartering a gulet will save you money. You can either  rent an entire gulet  or book a single cabin. A cabin charter is ideal if you are sailing solo or with your partner. Apart from being  luxurious and spacious, gulets are also amazingly comfortable and homey. However, the most important characteristic of a gulet is its romantic and traditional atmosphere that will make you feel like you’re travelling in time.

Standard vs. Luxury Gulet Charter

There are  several types of gulets  to consider when chartering. However, there are two types that are the most popular - a standard gulet that has the best rental price and a luxury gulet that is the most popular. When comparing the two gulet charter options, we can think of a 3 and a 5-star hotel. A standard gulet, that has the accommodation of a 3-star hotel, is a  traditional wooden gulet  that offers cabins with private bathrooms, a space for the crew, as well as a sun deck. A standard gulet is also suitable for a cabin charter .

Traditional gulet boat

On the other hand, chartering a luxury gulet is the best way to  experience private cruising . If you want to enjoy the luxury of a 5-star hotel while sailing the most beautiful seas, opt for a luxury gulet. You can, depending on the number of people, choose the boat size. Choose a small gulet if you are traveling with your partner or a big one if you have a large group of friends, a family gathering or an event to celebrate.

A luxury gulet charter offers you the best service, professional crew, exquisite meals, and lots of entertainment on board. Other than that, you have a beautifully decorated interior that includes 4 to 7 cabins with single or double beds and private bathrooms, as well as a large seating/dining area with a galley. On deck, you can find more settees and a jacuzzi for your pleasure. Enjoy wine sipping with your better half, practice water sports with your kids,  watch amazing sunsets and sunrises  in the most beautiful sailing destinations – all on board of your luxury gulet.

Private Gulet Charter vs. Cabin Charter

If you decide to charter a gulet , you can choose between private gulet charter and a cabin gulet charter . If you are on a budget and planning to spend your holidays solo, with your partner or a friend  it is recommended that you charter a cabin (it can easily fit 2-4 people). A cabin charter includes accommodation (single, double or triple cabin), meals and the use of gulet leisure equipment. This type of charter is perfect for adventurists who like visiting beautiful destinations and making new friends from all around the world.

Private gulet charter is extremely popular among vacationers from all around the world. It is a great option if you have a large group of friends or a big family, since you will have the entire boat at your disposal. Don’t forget that the boat is fully crewed which means you won’t have to do anything besides relax. The professional crew consists of a skipper and a cook, who will make sure you have the time of your life. Enjoy  sailing with your friends or family , organize parties out in the open and have a dream holiday tailored to your group desires.

What people love about Gulet Tours

Nice boat but most important nice boat crew. A great atmosphere and service. We spent 4 very nice days. Breakfast and lunch were included and the cook was really talented. Unlimited water was available as well as fruit. It was a party boat but there was the flexibility to do whatever you wanted when in port.
The staff was really nice, they would give us suggestions for places, the food was very delicious. The boat room is pretty small and the bathroom also, but you’re not gonna spend a lot of time there anyway. They stop everyday in nice swim spots and the boat we have been on had also stand-up paddle board which I think it’s a very cool idea.
We were a group of 10 friends who decided to go on a gulet cruise in Montenegro. The idea was to see the beautiful Adriatic Sea and to spend our time on the boat. We booked a gulet through a company called Boutique cruises. We were really satisfied with their service.

7 reasons why a boating holiday is the perfect slow-paced adventure

Puttering along England's meandering waterways in a boat is one of the most relaxing holidays you can have

boating holidays

And like all the best things in life, the fun is in the journey not the destination. Well, unless you count the many riverside pubs you'll encounter along the way.

Boating life has its own rules. Waving at everyone is compulsory. No speeding – the backwash upsets the river dwellers – and don't tease the wildlife . Remember, it's hard to outrun an angry swan when your top speed is five mph.

If you're looking for a slow-paced adventure, here are seven good reasons why a boating holiday should be at the top of your wish list. What's more, Country Living readers can now save a generous 25 per cent off boating holidays with Le Boat , which has departures across the UK, France and Ireland.

It encourages you to slow right down

boating holidays

There's something about the gentle pace of life on the river which slows the metronome of life right down. Putter along the waterways in a quiet boat and you can exist quite happily in the company of the resident swans, mallards and grey heron. A boating holiday is great for amateur twitchers. Bring your binoculars and you could spot grey crested grebes, reed buntings, kingfishers and many more as you slowly cruise the waterways.

You can explore remote waterways

boating holidays ireland

A far cry from those itinerary-heavy city breaks or busy beach holidays , if you want to really relax, a boating trip is just the ticket. With thousands of miles of waterways criss-crossing England, Le Boat has several departure points dotted along the Thames . Wind through ancient tunnels, duck under mossy bridges and navigate locks as you putter through some of Britain's most beautiful countryside .

It's fun for all the family

boating holidays

Whether you’re working the locks, manning the helm or cycling along the towpath to race the boats, a self-drive boating holiday in England or Europe can be a brilliant low-key adventure for all the family - even the furry members. From riverside walking paths to dog-friendly pubs, life on the water can be as much fun for hounds as it is for their humans.

Boating is the best pub crawl

boating holidays

Of course, the main attraction of a boating holiday is coasting from riverside pub to riverside pub on a beautiful sunny day. Whether you fancy a ploughman's lunch, a snifter at sunset or to moor up and settle in for the night, the River Thames is peppered with some incredible waterfront pubs. On the Oxford leg, look out for The Head of the River at Folly Bridge, which has a charming floral garden. While foodies will love the fine dining menu at the Compleat Angler in Marlow.

No experience is necessary

boating holidays

Life at the helm is not only the domain of salty sea dogs and swashbucklers - boating holidays are accessible to everyone. Le Boat 's vessels have been designed to be incredibly easy to pilot. Driven with a steering wheel and a forward/reverse throttle, absolutely no experience or boat licence is necessary. After a short introduction to the boat and controls, Le Boat's team will accompany you for a short distance until you're comfortable before sending you on your merry way.

It's an easy way to sightsee

boating holidays

One of Le Boat's most popular routes is along the River Thames . Stretching for more than 200 miles from Gloucestershire down to the Thames Estuary, there's plenty to see and do on a Thames boating holiday. Moor up and visit Hampton Court Palace or take a stroll around Richmond Park. On their French itineraries, the scenic Canal du Midi passes through medieval villages and Loire vineyards on its way from Toulouse down to the Mediterranean.

You might spot a celebrity boater

boating holidays burgundy france

Canal boating holidays have attracted a celebrity following in recent years. Keira Knightly is often seen noodling along the Regent's Canal on a narrowboat, while Harrison Ford and Calista Flockhart spent a week cruising the canals of Llangollen. And there are few corners of Britain's extensive canal network that Prunella Scales and Timothy West have not uncovered for Channel 4's Great Canal Journeys series.

Team USA survives scare from South Sudan, storms back to avoid stunning upset

LONDON, ENGLAND - JULY 20: LeBron James #6 of Team USA drives to the basket during the game against South Sudan as part of the 2024 USA Basketball Showcase on July 20, 2024 in London, England at O2 Arena. LONDON — The American men’s Olympic team faced its first true test of the summer from a surprising source and passed, avoiding what would have been one of the most stunning losses in 50 years of USA Basketball.

Team USA overcame a 16-point deficit to beat South Sudan, the youngest nation playing international basketball, 101-100, to remain unbeaten in exhibition play this summer.

“I did not do a great job preparing our team,” American coach Steve Kerr said. “I think we did not focus enough on what they’re capable of and that’s on me.”

LeBron James , a two-time Olympic gold medalist and arguably the greatest to ever play as the NBA ’s all-time leading scorer, turned in his best game of the summer with 25 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. His drive to the basket for a left-handed layup with 8 seconds left was the game-winner.

IT'S WHAT HE DOES. 🥶 🇺🇸 #USABMNT x 📺 @FoxSports pic.twitter.com/zGBz6TJ54T — USA Basketball (@usabasketball) July 20, 2024

Stephen Curry , another all-time great and the best shooter who ever lived, added 10 points. Former NBA MVP Joel Embiid had his best game for Team USA so far with 14 points and 7 boards, and Anthony Davis was a monster yet again with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

The Americans needed every ounce of those performances from its biggest stars to beat a country that didn’t exist until 2011, has no current NBA players and whose biggest “star” may be a skinny, 17-year-old who’s headed to Duke.

“We can be beat if we don’t play our brand of basketball, and our brand of basketball is playing defense,” said Curry, who shot 3 of 10. “But we also learned we have that gear if we can find it, no matter who’s out there on the court, we can overwhelm teams for 40 minutes and it’s a great reminder of both.”

Marial Shayok, a Canadian-born forward who plays professionally in China, led the South Sudanese with 25 points and six 3s. Carlik Jones, who has played 12 NBA games over three seasons, produced a triple-double with 15 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists. Wenyen Gabriel, a former teammate of James on the Los Angeles Lakers , contributed 11 points and six rebounds, and JT Thor, who’s played with the Charlotte Hornets but is not currently on a team, scored 14 points. Khaman Maluach, who’s going to Duke, scored 7 points off the South Sudan bench.

Jones had a good look at a bank shot with about four seconds left that missed; Gabriel grabbed the offensive rebound but missed the putback dunk attempt at the buzzer. Official scorers credited Anthony Edwards with the game-saving block, and the South Sudanese wanted a foul called.

“We got a good shot, we got a rebound and we got a good look at it,” said South Sudan coach Royal Ivey, who is an assistant coach with the Houston Rockets . “I’m not a ref, but I thought it was contact when Wenyen Gabriel got the ball and it was a no-call, but I can’t blame it on the (refs). We play the game and at the end of the day we live with the results and there’s no complaining about it.”

The South Sudanese, who were built by former NBA star Luol Deng, are in the Olympics for the first time; the Americans are four-time defending Olympic gold medalists. The two will face each other in a game that counts during pool play at the Paris Olympics, on July 31.

For two full quarters, South Sudan was the faster, more disciplined, better shooting team. The South Sudanese built a 16-point lead in the first half — it was 58-44 at halftime — by holding the Americans to 1-of-12 shooting on 3s and banging home seven treys.

Kerr said the Americans didn’t use their one practice in London to prepare properly. He said part of it was the dominant victory Wednesday in Abu Dhabi , followed by the long flight Tuesday from the United Arab Emirates to the United Kingdom, which he said set the stage for a “letdown.”

But rather than pack it in and chalk it up as a loss in a game that didn’t count, the whole American team — coaches and players — played to win. Kerr swapped out his starters for the second unit to start the second half and also changed out second-string point guard Tyrese Haliburton for Derrick White to crank up the ball pressure even more on Jones and Shayok.

“This team was quicker than the teams we played so far, and we had a really hard time guarding the ball the first half and because of that, they were getting open for 3s,” Kerr said. “One thing we know well with USA basketball, if teams are going to make 14 3s on us, then they’ve got a real shot.”

When Kerr went back to his starters in the third quarter, James opened with a 3-ball and then set up Jrue Holiday for a layup. James relentlessly drove to the rim and registered multiple tone-setting dunks and otherwise pushed the pace. He also seemed to gather most of the team after a timeout, before the ball was inbounded, as if to demand that they do what they must to win.

A win is a win. 🎙 @KingJames inside the 🇺🇸 #USABMNT huddle. pic.twitter.com/AtqGfQ1aqS — USA Basketball (@usabasketball) July 20, 2024

The Americans closed the third quarter on runs of 21-5 and 16-0. Devin Booker ’s 3-pointer with 58 seconds left in the period tied the score at 76, and then Curry chased down a loose ball and fired it from near the timeline for the go-ahead 3-ball on the next possession.

USA led by 7 in the fourth quarter, and James was hot, but Kerr stuck to his pattern of subbing in five new players at a time. He also stayed with White over Haliburton, and South Sudan crawled back with a chance to win at the end.

“We do not have a lot of time to continue to not take a step forward,” said James, whose last game in London before this one was the 2012 Olympic gold medal game. “It doesn’t matter when it comes to how close the game is and whatnot. Did we get better? I felt like in the first half we allowed ’em to get comfortable. They started hitting 3s and then in the second half we played our style of basketball.”

The U.S. team that fields only NBA talent — mostly All-Stars, and in the case of its 2024 Olympic team, a roster full of future hall of famers — has lost nine games in five summers.

In 2021, Team USA lost an exhibition game to another African nation — Nigeria — in Las Vegas, but that Nigerian team had far more NBA talent than the group the South Sudan used to pull off a major upset. The Americans went on to win the gold medal in Tokyo that summer, enduring two losses in the exhibition season and then a loss to France to open Olympic play.

“I think there is a tendency at times to let down. … This was kind of a natural letdown game that you fear,” Kerr said. “I think because it was a friendly. I think we let our guard down as a team, as a staff for sure. But what we’ve learned with USA basketball is that the gap has closed.”

“Nigeria beat us in a friendly in 2021 in Las Vegas, so it’s not a shock to see a team from South Sudan play really well and knock down 3s,” Kerr continued. “The game has gotten better across the globe, but we still feel like we always control the outcome with our performance, and as good as every other team is now, we still feel like it’s up to us to determine the outcome based on our defense and our effort.

“And I thought that waned tonight for the whole first half and once we picked it up in the second half, it was a game already. And that’s why we were in the fight that we were in.”

The Americans will close out exhibition play Monday against Germany, which won the FIBA World Cup last summer. Team USA is hoping to have Kevin Durant (left calf strain) on the court for that game. He has not played in any exhibition game this summer.

Longtime Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas, who had pancreatic cancer, has died

Longtime U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas, who helped lead federal efforts to protect women from domestic violence and recognize Juneteenth as a national holiday, has died. She was 74.

Lillie Conley, her chief of staff, confirmed Friday night that Jackson Lee, who had pancreatic cancer, had died.

The Democrat had represented her Houston-based district since 1995. She had previously had breast cancer and announced the pancreatic cancer diagnosis on June 2.

“The road ahead will not be easy, but I stand in faith that God will strengthen me,” Jackson Lee said in a statement then.

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, a Texas Democrat, says she has pancreatic cancer

Longtime U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee says she has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and is undergoing treatment.

June 3, 2024

Jackson Lee had just been elected to the Houston district once represented by Barbara Jordan, the first Black woman elected to Congress from a Southern state since Reconstruction, when she was placed on the high-profile House Judiciary Committee in 1995.

“They just saw me, I guess through my profile, through Barbara Jordan’s work,” Jackson Lee told the Houston Chronicle in 2022. “I thought it was an honor because they assumed I was going to be the person they needed.”

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, who as a congresswoman worked with Jackson Lee on the Judiciary Committee, issued a statement, saying that “our nation lost a tenacious defender of freedom for all.”

“The entire Congress could always count on her for sharp legal analysis and blunt assessment of strategy and reality,” Bass said. “She was a force to be reckoned with on Capitol Hill and leaves a legacy that will ripple for decades to come.”

Jackson Lee quickly established herself as fierce advocate for women and minorities, and a leader for House Democrats on many social justice issues, including policing reform and reparations for descendants of enslaved people. She led the first rewrite of the Violence Against Women Act in nearly a decade, which included specific protections for Native American and immigrant women and transgender people.

Jackson Lee was also was among the lead lawmakers behind the effort in 2021 to have Juneteenth recognized as the first new federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was established in 1986. The holiday marks the day in 1865 that the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, finally learned of their freedom.

A native of Queens, N.Y., Jackson Lee graduated from Yale and earned her law degree at the University of Virginia. She was a judge in Houston before she was elected to the Houston City Council in 1989 and Congress in 1994. She was an advocate for gay rights and an early opponent of the Iraq war in 2003.

Jackson Lee routinely won reelection to Congress with ease. The few times she faced a challenger, she never carried less than two-thirds of the vote. Jackson Lee considered leaving Congress in 2023 in a bid to become Houston’s first female Black mayor but was defeated in a runoff . She then easily won the Democratic nomination for her congressional seat.

During the mayoral campaign, Jackson Lee expressed regret and said “everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect” following the release of an unverified audio recording purported to be of the lawmaker berating staff members.

In 2019, Jackson Lee stepped down from her leadership positions on the House Judiciary Committee and Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, the fundraising arm of the Congressional Black Caucus, after a lawsuit by a former employee who said her sexual assault complaint was mishandled.

Even before President Joe Biden's withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race, allies of former President Donald Trump floated the possibility of suing to block Democrats from having anyone other than Biden on the ballot in November. But election administration experts say the timing of Biden's exit makes it unlikely that any Republican ballot access challenges will succeed, with some calling the idea "ridiculous" and "frivolous." Greek Islands

The Greek Islands offer history, culture, sun and sea. Enjoy the many pleasures an island-hopping gulet cruise has to offer. Go back through time on the ancient island of Rhodes; see the charming lanes of Symi; swim the azure waters of Kos; see the world-famous sunset in Santoríni; or enjoy the sparkling nightlife of Mýkonos. Greek gulet cruise holidays take place in the Dodecanese (Rhodes, Symi, Kos, etc), the Cyclades (Santorini, Mykonos, etc) and the Ionian islands (Corfu, Paxos, etc).

Due to the proximity of many islands to the Turkish mainland, Greek island hopping holidays can depart from either the Greek Islands or Turkish harbours and usually take place on Turkish gulets.
