prada debuts new luna rossa AC75 boat monohull with 2 carbon-fiber arms

prada has unveiled its AC75 luna rossa monohull that will represent italy’s circolo della vela sicilia yacht club at the 36th edition of america’s cup. built by the persico marine boatyard, the sailboat took almost two years to build and involved over 90 people in her construction, including 37 team designers and a total of 78,000 work hours.

7,000 square meters of carbon fibre and 400 square meters of aluminium honeycomb were used to create the hull. the two innovative carbon-fibre ‘foil arms’, weighing 500 kg each, have been designed to support a maximum load of 27 tonnes. there’s also a ‘soft wing’ rig that is key to the latest model, with two sails hoisted in parallel and inbuilt systems to control the sail shape.

20,000 km of carbon fibre thread was used to create the mainsail, in addition to 5,000 km for each jib and 12,000 km for each ‘code zero’, used to sail downwind in light breeze. the AC75 will be sailed by the luna rossa prada pirelli team in the prada cup, the america’s cup challengers’ selection series, followed by the final match of the 36th america’s cup presented by prada, scheduled to take place in auckland (new zealand) from january to march 2021.

‘this is our sixth america’s cup challenge, but launch day is as exciting as ever,’ said patrizio bertelli, president of the ship. ‘it is the magical moment that brings together many months of work and dedication and the anticipation of finally seeing on the water what was until now only a design.’

the italian boat was christened ‘luna rossa’ by miuccia prada, ceo of the prada group together with her husband patrizio bertelli, during a ceremony at the team’s home base in cagliari, sardinia – the venue for the first america’s cup world series event next april.

Product Description

Catamaran Racer - Luna Rossa Prada - 26"

Everything Nautical  proudly presents the Catamaran Racer - Luna Rossa Prada - 26" . Many experts say Catamarans are the future of sailboat racing. These 72" boats can reach speeds of more than 60 MPH! This boat is a fine example, and has been a fierce competitor in worldwide Catamaran Championships. The popularity of these swift and stable boats has resulted in the making of very sophisticated racing boats with competitions being held in every part of the world.  Nathanael Herreshoff drew the first racing catamaran to compete in the the New York Yacht Club’s annual regatta. This boat so frightened the membership at the time that catamaran racing was banished from civilized yacht racing for the last 100 years.

Catamarans from Oceania and Maritime Southeast Asia became the inspiration for modern catamarans. Until the 20th century catamaran development focused primarily on sail-driven concepts. A catamaran (informally, a "cat") is a multi-hulled watercraft featuring two parallel hulls of equal size. It is a geometry-stabilized craft, deriving its stability from its wide beam, rather than from a ballasted keel as with a monohull boat. Catamarans typically have less hull volume, smaller displacement, and shallower draft (draught) than monohulls of comparable length. The two hulls combined also often have a smaller hydrodynamic resistance than comparable monohulls, requiring less propulsive power from either sails or motors. The catamaran's wider stance on the water can reduce both heeling and wave-induced motion, as compared with a monohull, and can give reduced wakes.

Catamarans were invented by the Austronesian peoples which enabled their expansion to the islands of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Catamarans range in size from small sailing or rowing vessels to large naval ships and roll-on/roll-off car ferries. The structure connecting a catamaran's two hulls ranges from a simple frame strung with webbing to support the crew to a bridging superstructure incorporating extensive cabin and/or cargo space. Some assembly is required. The sails and rigging are laid down for more economical shipping. The hull is preassembled.

Jake Gyllenhaal, the Face of Prada Luna Rossa Ocean, on His Career, His Craft, and the Best Advice He Ever Got

Sharp Staff September 27, 2021

Jake Gyllenhaal needs no introduction. The 40-year-old actor, producer, and former Sharp cover star has starred in more than 60 films alongside Hollywoods most celebrated filmmakers. But now he’s taking on a new role: his first-ever advertising campaign, for Prada Luna Rossa Ocean, the Italian brand’s new men’s fragrance.

Artisanal craftsmanship meets cutting-edge technology to create a masculine, fresh fragrance that nods to the open waters. The fragrance’s materials and design recall the sleek design and advanced craftsmanship of extreme sailing boats, projecting strength and sophistication. The bottle is lacquered in a blue gradient — a nod to the surface of the sea — and the iconic Prada red line symbolizes the brand’s commitment to innovation and excellence. An elegant, night-black cap is finished with a red dot, a symbolic reference to luna rossa, the red moon. The scent is formulated using a high-tech process called molecular distillation, which ensures the selection of the finest molecules, for an entirely made-to-measure fragrance with a clean, woody vetiver note.

Gyllenhaal is a natural fit to front the fragrance campaign. A lifelong adventurer — he grew up sailing with his uncle — Gyllenhaal’s rugged charm telegraphs strength, intellect, and a quiet intensity that radiates on and offscreen. Here, he talks about committing to his craft, the best advice he ever got, and how the Prada partnership came about.

What are your first memories of fragrance?

I think you can wear it as an everyday [fragrance]. There’s a sense that it’s about adventure, an active quality. I feel that the campaign is about movement and adventure and not just [the] sort of adventure out into the world but an adventure internally. I think the ocean represents that – the ocean is awe-inspiring but also terrifying because it’s the ultimate unknown and, hopefully, that’s what you venture into every day. It’s not just about the fancy or special occasions, it’s about how you treat yourself on a daily basis.

What is it about Prada that you connect with?

There are so many things about it [the brand] that just felt like it was the right match for me. For instance, take the Luna Rossa itself, the boat, it’s this spectacular work of art. When you see it, it’s all these things that you see, it’s black it’s matte. It’s just gangster. It’s awesome. Then you see what it can actually do – it’s like a HyperFoil on the sea that harnesses the power of wind and water and travels at speeds that risks people’s lives to win races. That is the epitome of what Prada is – there is a sense of serious technology, where they’re not messing around, of serious design where they’re not messing around, and they’re down to win. I think that they’re down to take risks in trying to do, which means they’re also recognizing that there’s the possibility of failure. I think as a brand there’s no real way to have design push the boundaries if you don’t have that mentality. Everything they do has that idea. In a world where we [are constantly considering] risk management I think to have a brand that says go out and takes risks, but use a rational mind to do it, is super inspiring.

What’s your relationship like to the sea?

I grew up around the ocean, I grew up sailing, my uncle was an avid sailor. He passed a decade ago. Every time I’m on a sailboat I’m reminded of him. Even in the hard times with his health [or in] his life, sailing was just such a freeing time for him.

And so, I grew up around the ocean and I am in awe of it, but I am also terrified of it. I love scuba diving [and] what’s so interesting about that for me is I can be so scared of going under the water but as soon as [I’m] under it’s just a whole different feeling, I’m never so calm. I love the ocean.

There’s a real sense that you’ve devoted yourself to the craft of acting. What keeps you inspired?

I just really respect the craft and I think that there is one. [I think that’s] the only way to maintain a semblance of sanity because it’s an odd job. Let’s be frank: to perform something or to perform words is not the same as to write them or create them and it takes a certain type of immaturity to do that. I think that craft is where the maturity meets the immaturity. It’s necessary and its work, it keeps you sane. You can intellectualize it; you can use your mind for work that can easily be dismissed. That’s why I like the craft.

There’s a great joy I get, particularly from being on stage, like I’ve found my place. I wish it for everyone that they find their place. I thought for a long time that it was the attention that you get from that place but it’s not [like that] for me. I have just always loved being in that space, that’s what motivates me. I like being a professional, you know? When you’re a professional it requires a consistency. I remember a chef saying, the difference between an amateur chef and a professional chef is that the amateur chef can cook three great steaks and then like four or five bad ones. I have to cook exactly the same every single night for each table and I love that type of precision. That’s what motivates me – the precision, [the] dedication and [the] study.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

There was a moment where I was working with an actor [when] I was young, I was 16. You know, there’s nothing like fight scene, it’s like the best. Not the fighting but like the yelling, you know? That’s acting! When I read the scene earlier on, I knew exactly what I wanted to do. [When] I came into the scene I was yelling and doing my stuff and I remember this wonderful actor coming up to me and stopping me after the second take and just saying to me I just need you to listen to me, just listen to what I am saying to you. And I was like ‘okay, great’, I thought it was great but like okay.

So when I came into the scene I said I’m going to take this time to focus and listen and when he started saying things, he actually started to get me angry. I was like what’s that? That’s real. Then, all of a sudden, the scene shifted into a place that felt alive, that felt like people could hear it and actually relate to it. It just changed everything. Him saying to me “Just listen to me, listen to what I’m saying to you” I have to say it was the best advice I’ve ever gotten, which was “Just listen”. [and] that was Chris Cooper who gave me that advice.

How do you best prepare for roles now that you’ve been given that advise? If you even prepare for roles.

I do sometimes and sometimes I don’t. I do sometimes very intensely and sometimes I don’t. I think the key is that if you’re curious other people will give you so much. Other people will have the answer. So, that’s been very helpful for me. If you’re working with people that you really respect nothing is ever criticism, it’s just another idea. That’s the way I kind of approach it. I think you have to find certain like-minded people and that’s very helpful. Even if you don’t agree at least there’s something your instinct tells you that is correct about the connection.

Finally, how did the partnership come to be?

Prada approached me and told me their idea of what they wanted to do with the fragrance, it was really that simple. Something in me just said yes, that feels right. It feels right because, frankly, you can speak about it because you’re aligned. That’s how I feel with Prada, we’re aligned. I approach my work in a similar way, I believe that rational thought is very important, I trust the science. But, as you can tell from this interview, I also have a ridiculously convoluted, abstract mind.

Prada Cup Final: Luna Rossa wins in impressive style

  • Toby Heppell
  • February 21, 2021

A strong boat, and an impressive sailing performance saw Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli beat INEOS Team UK by 7 victories to one in the Prada Cup final. The Italians will now go on to the America's Cup itself.

prada sailboat model

Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli have earned the right to race Emirates Team New Zealand for the America’s Cup as they sailed through the Prada Cup Final to win seven races to INEOS Team UK’s single victory.

In winds of around 10 knots, it was always going to be a challenge for the Brits who have consistently struggled in the lighter end of the wind spectrum. Once again today, Luna Rossa proved themselves to be an impressive outfit, and sailed a controlled day to take both victories, the first by 1 minute 45 seconds, the next by 56 seconds.

With a slower boat, particularly in manoeuvres, the best the British team, helmed by Sir Ben Ainslie, could hope for was to win the starts and try to force their competition to sail around them.

To give the Brits their due, on paper you would say their starts today were the better of the two teams. In the first they got off the line slightly bow-forward of the Italians and to leeward, but Luna Rossa managed to live in that tough spot for long enough that when the two teams tacked on the port boundary, they ended bow forward and marginally to leeward of the Brits and managed to squeeze into a strong leebow position, ultimately forcing the Brits to tack away.

prada sailboat model

From that point forward it was very much a repeat of the first race we saw yesterday , as Luna Rossa sailed away and never looked troubled by the British outfit. “The breeze is pretty light and it is that balance between making something happen and not. As we’ve seen an even start is not going to cut it,” said Ainslie of the situation.

The Brits looked keen to make something happen in the second start of the day but it was a messy old affair. Ainslie very nearly allowed Luna Rossa to get underneath them and hook them approaching the startline but just about managed to save it. However, both boats looked to be early coming back toward the pin end of the line, and the Brits ultimately had to tack onto port across the Italians’ bow to keep themselves behind the line at the start.

It was a close moment, and though the Brits were not penalised for impeding the starboard tack Luna Rossa, it could have gone either way. For their part Luna Rossa’s timing was slightly off and they conceded a penalty for being over the line at the start.

At the first time of crossing, the Brits on starboard led the Italians, but not by enough to put a covering tack on them. At the next cross the positions had reversed. The single first cross moment was the only time we saw the British team lead a race all day. The 170 year losing streak continues for Britain who have still never won the trophy for which they first competed in 1851.

Prada Cup won, Luna Rossa move on to the America’s Cup

All the racing we have seen so far has really only been a warm up, a prelude to the main event, the America’s Cup itself.

prada sailboat model

Luna Rossa has impressed with good pace all series. Photo: COR 36 / Studio Borlenghi

Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli will now face Emirates Team New Zealand from 6th to 15th March. This is the big one, the event for which all teams have been training for the last 4 years. Simply racing in the event puts you in an exclusive club, one which the Luna Rossa team are already in, having won the challenger selection series way back in 2000 on their first attempt at the America’s Cup.

But Italy has never won the cup itself and the Italian team will be hoping now is the time that elusive dream comes true. They certainly look strong and have been totally dominant in the Prada Cup Final, but they will come up against a sailing team in Emirates Team New Zealand who are intelligent, skilled and almost certainly very fast.

The last part of that statement is the challenge for all teams competing for the America’s Cup. As Defender, the kiwis have been able to sit back and observe their potential competition. They have not raced any one of them, but they will have a great deal of data from the racing that has taken place to date with which to compare their performance.

For the Italians, and for the fans, just what sort of performance the New Zealanders have in the bag is anyone’s guess. But that speculation is for another day. For now, Italy can celebrate becoming the official challenger for the Cup. They sailed incredibly well in a boat which looks impressively quick. To quote Luna Rossa co-helmsman Francesco Bruni: “Fantastic, bellissimo.”

Prada’s Futuristic New Sailboat Floats on Carbon Fiber Arms

' src=

When you hear the name Prada , boats probably aren’t the first things that come to mind. The legendary luxury fashion house founded in Milan is certainly best known for its high-end leather handbags and chic runway looks, not to mention its connection to the hit Meryl Streep movie The Devil Wears Prada . But that doesn’t mean the brand has to limit itself to wearables.

Prada's Luna Rossa AC75 Sailboat, designed for this year's America's Cup World Series sailing competition

Prada teamed up with another boundary-breaking Italian company, Pirelli, to design the Luna Rossa AC75 , a black monohull sailboat that looks like it could take to the skies at any moment. The AC75 is actually the ninth Luna Rossa boat designed by the team to represent Italy at the America’s Cup World Series sailing competition. The 36th annual event will be held in Sardinia next April, and the Luna Rossa will be the first challenger of the Emirates Team New Zealand, who won the last race.

It took two years for a team of 90 people (including 37 designers) to build the boat, which is made of carbon fiber and aluminum honeycomb with two innovative “foil arms” designed to support a maximum load of 27 metric tons (about 59,000 pounds).

Prada's Luna Rossa AC75 Sailboat, designed for this year's America's Cup World Series sailing competition

Sailboats with arms are called “hydrofoil sailboats.” The wing-like foils mounted under the hull lift it up and out of the water while racing, allowing the entire boat to go twice as fast as the speed of the wind. They’re not unusual, but rarely do they look quite so high fashion as this.

“ Another innovative feature of the AC75 is the ‘soft wing’ rig, with two sails hoisted in parallel and inbuilt systems to control the sail shape,” Prada states on its website. “This provides the efficiency of a hard wing combined with ease of use and handling akin to a traditional sail. 20,000 kilometers of carbon fiber thread was used to create the mainsail, in addition to 5,000 kilometers for each jib and 12,000 kilometers for each ‘code zero,” used to sail downwind in light breeze.”

Prada's Luna Rossa AC75 Sailboat, designed for this year's America's Cup World Series sailing competition

Prada, which is also sponsoring the event, sent its design lead Miuccia Prada to christen the boat at its unveiling in Sardinia on October 2nd.

“This is our sixth America’s Cup challenge, but launch day is as exciting as ever — it is the magical moment that brings together many months of work and dedication and the anticipation of finally seeing on the water what was until now only a design,” says Patrizio Bertelli, President of the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team and husband of Miuccia. “ This time, the revolutionary and innovative way the entire monohull concept has been reinterpreted heightens expectations still further.”

You might think designing a futuristic-looking hydrofoil sailboat in a sophisticated black dress would be the natural starting point for a crossover between the Luna Rossa project and Prada’s fashion. Can’t you already imagine the sailing-inspired outfits such a project could produce? Alas, it’s not to be: when asked whether the sailboat might inspire a themed collection , Bertelli said there’s no such plan in the works.

What Kind of Boat Is in the Prada Commercial?

May 30, 2023

thedutchladydesigns

Are you a fan of the luxurious Prada brand? Have you been wondering about the sleek boat featured in their recent commercial? Look no further, as we delve into the details of this stunning vessel.

Firstly, it’s essential to note that the boat in question is a Riva Aquariva Super. This elegant Italian-made speedboat is a modern take on the classic Riva Aquarama model, which was first introduced in 1962. The Riva Aquariva Super has been designed to offer high performance and comfort, making it an ideal choice for those who want to experience luxury on the water.

One of the most striking features of this boat is its design. The Riva Aquariva Super boasts a mahogany hull that has been crafted with meticulous attention to detail.

This material gives it an elegant look that is both timeless and sophisticated. The boat’s exterior is finished with stainless steel accents that add a modern touch to its classic design.

Underneath its beautiful exterior lies an impressive engine. The Riva Aquariva Super is powered by two Yanmar diesel engines, each producing 380 horsepower. These engines allow this speedboat to reach speeds of up to 41 knots (47 mph), making it one of the fastest boats in its class.

Onboard, the Riva Aquariva Super offers plenty of space for relaxation and entertainment. Its cockpit features comfortable seating for up to eight people, while its sunbathing area provides ample space for soaking up the sun’s rays. The boat’s interior has also been designed with luxury in mind and features handcrafted leather upholstery and polished chrome accents.

Prada

Eyes are turned East — way East, as the sailing races to determine the winner of the Prada Cup between Luna Rossa, American Magic and Ineos U.K. kick off in Auckland today.

The winner of this round robin will advance to the finals scheduled from Feb. 13 to 22. The winner of the Prada Cup will be the official challenger against the defender, the Emirates Team New Zealand, in the America’s Cup, from March 6 to 15.

The America’s Cup, the oldest trophy in the history of sports and the most prestigious in the sailing world, marks the sixth challenge for Prada’s chief executive officer Patrizio Bertelli and his Luna Rossa sailing boat.

The Luna Rossa team was established in 1997 by Bertelli and the team won the Louis Vuitton Cup in 2000, with a record of 38 victories over 49 races. It also competed in 2003 and in 2007, when it reached the Louis Vuitton Cup final.

Designers prove there are many sides to the suit.

Here, Bertelli discusses with WWD his enduring passion for sailing, why he chose to participate once again to the America’s Cup, what the sports discipline teaches and how he’ll watch the races.

WWD: What sparked your passion for sailing? How did it all begin? You are not only an art collector, I read you also collect boats. Can you tell us something about this collection?

Patrizio Bertelli: It all started in the early 1970s in [Tuscany’s] Castiglione della Pescaia [home to one of the first sailing clubs in the region], with a group of friends. With them, I started to sail on the 23-foot-long boats VI Classe IOR. I am passionate about sailing and breathing new life into boats that have made history in terms of yacht design, returning them to victory in vintage regattas.

W WD: I’ve been told that through the years you’ve acted as both a trimmer and a spinnaker. Do you continue to sail ?

P.B.:  I’ve held different roles on boats over the years: bowman, trimmer, helmsman. I continue to sail now, participating in regattas with historical boats.

WWD: When did you decide to take part in the America’s Cup once again and why?

P.B.: It was in Bermuda, in 2017, after the New Zealand team won over Oracle. I felt it was only right to resume this project, also to try and bring back to the America’s Cup that luster it was losing.

WWD: Twenty years have passed since the first Louis Vuitton Cup and it is obvious that you are moved by true passion and that this is not merely an investment in communication and marketing. What have you learned from these experiences? What does a sports discipline such as sailing teach?

P.B.: First of all, sailing teaches to be humble. You can never be sure you are on the right path and you must constantly put yourself out there. You are not merely facing your opponent, but especially nature and the technological development. There are no certainties, but work and commitment.

WWD: What did you think of the performance of Luna Rossa during the World Series that just ended last month? This was the first event to showcase the new AC75 yachts together on the same racecourse. [The hosting Emirates Team New Zealand won.] Skipper and team director Max Sirena said that through the past three years, the work was practically done in the dark, without being able to evaluate the opponents. What is your opinion? What do you think of the opponents? What are your expectations?

P.B.: Luna Rossa’s performance is encouraging: We have demonstrated we are competitive, especially with light wind. Obviously we are only at the beginning and there is still a lot of room for development, and we can’t draw any hasty conclusion. For the time being, the New Zealanders have shown they have an advantage in certain conditions, but they don’t seem unreachable. It will be a very interesting and hard-fought America’s Cup.

WWD: Are you considering going to New Zealand? How will you watch the regattas?

P.B.: In the current situation my place is here, in Italy, next to my collaborators and workers. I feel this as a duty, independently from the logistic difficulties connected to entering New Zealand. I will watch the regattas on television and I am in constant contact with Max Sirena and I actively participate to the life of the team, even remotely.

WWD: How did you meet Max Sirena and what strikes you the most in him? What are his main characteristics and his main qualities? How has the team evolved in parallel with the technical evolution of Luna Rossa?

P.B.: I met Max Sirena when he was still at the beginning of his sailing life in 1997 and what impressed me the most was his determination, passion and humility: He started right away in Luna Rossa and he quickly climbed up to reach the top, all through his own merit. Max has also been able to always keep up with the multiple technical developments of the Cup and to know how to mix and manage an America’s Cup team, which has strong complexities.

WWD: The technological development of these boats is incredible. Do you perhaps think it has become even a bit extreme? Analogies are sometimes seen with the Formula 1 category and how it influences the automotive sector. How do you think the evolution of these boats will affect the world of sailing?

P.B.: In sports, entailing the use of a vehicle — in sailing as in motorsports — the technical research is always avant-garde and opens the path to new perspectives, which will subsequently be absorbed and made accessible to the larger public: what was unimaginable 20 years ago is today almost banal. It’s clear that these boats are extreme; we have introduced them together with Team New Zealand developing an increasingly more contemporary trend in sailing: foiling.

WWD: Do you think that technical apparel will influence the development of materials, shapes and treatments for the use of everyday fashion? What do you expect from the Luna Rossa apparel line in terms of content and distribution around the world?

P.B.: Also in this case we have used and continue to use Luna Rossa as testing grounds to experiment new materials and manufacturing, verifying how they react in extreme conditions. The results could later be transferred in our production and in our active collections, to obtain an always increasing quality of all products.

WWD: How has the lifestyle version of the new A+P Luna Rossa 21 sneaker worn by the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team been received? What do you expect from this collaboration with Ad idas?

P.B.: The collaboration with Adidas was conceived precisely to combine the know-how and skills of both companies to create high-profile products, unique and technological. I am thus very satisfied by the feedback received from customers and to see how this model has been appreciated, in particular by those passionate about sneakers who have enjoyed the lifestyle version derived from the technical model. This encourages us to continue the collaboration working on new ideas.

Prada’s Latest Face Represents The Future Of Modelling

By Janelle Okwodu

The days when models were considered blank slates are over. Today’s runway stars are a well-rounded bunch, and no one illustrates that better than Prada’s latest campaign star, Taira. The rising star from Hokkaido, Japan, features in the spring/summer 2021 ads, creative directed by Ferdinando Verderi. The minimalist images and accompanying film highlight the beauty of the 25-year-old star.

Defying the “scouted in junior high” stereotype, Taira entered the industry last year with a bit of life experience. “I’ve been fortunate in that sense, and I feel grateful,” they shared on the phone from London. “Modelling has been a great way to explore identity and parts of myself even further, to delve deeper into things that intrigued me and think deeply about issues I studied while at university.”

By Anders Christian Madsen

The intro to modelling was unexpected. Asked by a few art student pals to pose for their projects while part of a year-long exchange program at London’s Goldsmiths College, Taira was scouted officially upon returning to Japan and is now signed to Ford Models in New York. A media, communication and culture major while in college, their pre-fashion plans were to dive deeper into academia. “I was studying identity politics and gender studies, specifically,” says Taira. “Primarily with media studies, semiotics and identity, which I was quite interested in. I took several modules related to ethnicity and gender, and since my school is an international one, I was able to transfer the credits I’d earned in London. While I studied sociology and anthropology, as they were relevant to my interests, then I completed the dissertation back in Japan.”

Understanding the intricacies of identity was important for Taira, who does not associate themselves with any gender labels. Instead of being defined by pre-existing definitions, they sought to determine who they are on their terms. University was an essential part of that journey of self-discovery. “I came into cultural studies with questions about what it means to be a gender, a nationality or an age,” Taira explains. “Whenever you introduce yourself, those are the things that separate us. It seems to me that the labels limit us and keep producing conflict between these invisible borders. I do not like to restrict myself with stereotypes and stigmas by actively choosing an identity category for myself.”

With much of fashion still beholden to categories of gender, size, or nationality, entering the modelling industry provided its own education on identity. “There have been moments that have challenged me to reflect on how I identify myself,” says Taira. “It’s also a good opportunity because it also allows you to look at how our culture works, our relationships with garments and fashion.” Transforming from shoot to shoot has also been illuminating. “There is this performative element to modelling; you’re often playing a character or representing the creative team’s ideas,” says Taira. “Our society still relates to those dual categories of male and female, and in a way, through my career, I can examine other possibilities.”

Instagram content

This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.

In a way, Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons’s first collection as co-creative directors was a fitting debut for Taira. A merger of talents that represented a new way of thinking about fashion collections , the show’s cast had to align with the revolutionary nature of the show itself. Selected by Ashley Brokaw, the line-up focused solely on modelling’s next generation. For Taira, the show was a once in a lifetime experience. “I can’t express my gratitude enough,” they say. “I’m lucky to have been a part of the very beginning of something so fresh and innovative, especially as an exclusive and for my very first show.” Given a birds-eye view of the pre-show process, Taira was also inspired by the talent they saw around them. “It was incredible to be able to witness the craftsmanship and teamwork that goes into these events,” they say. “Normally, that side of things is invisible to the public. It was all impressive. The clothes, the scale of the production. They projected our names on the screens [during rehearsals], and each model could show their personality. There was an appreciation of us as individuals, which was amazing as well.”

Post-show and campaign, Taira is focused on what lies ahead. Fresh from working with photographers like Campbell Addy and Nadine Ijewere, they hope to collaborate with even more unorthodox image-makers. “They’re pushing boundaries within the industry,” says Taira of her creative collaborators. “I had a chance to be on set with Tim Walker [recently], and it was just a life-changing experience. I had the pleasure of having a wonderful deep conversation with him and discussing the way he thinks and how he approaches his work.”

In the interim, Taira hopes that their presence in fashion leads to something meaningful. “I want to show the younger generation who is going to lead the world one day that there are no rules when it comes to identity,” they say. “You don’t have to put yourself in a box to make the people who don’t understand you feel comfortable. Change is rarely a comfortable experience, but through gradual change, people become more aware of what isn’t working and what we need to tackle. So ultimately, I’d like to be a part of projects that make our world a better, more interesting place.”

VESSEL REVIEW | Sinichka – Electric commuter boats designed for Russia’s Moskva River

prada sailboat model

A series of three new electric monohull commuter ferries have already begun operational sailings on the Moskva River in the Russian capital Moscow.

Built by Russian shipyard Emperium, sister vessels Sinichka , Filka , and Presnya – all named after rivers in Moscow – are being operated by the Moscow Department of Transport and Road Infrastructure Development (Moscow Deptrans). They are the first units of a planned fleet of 20 vessels that will serve the capital city and other nearby communities. The new ferry system will be the water transport system to be operated on the Moskva River in 16 years.

Each vessel has a welded aluminium hull, an LOA of 21 metres, a beam of 6.2 metres, a draught of only 1.4 metres, a displacement of 40 tonnes, and capacity for 80 passengers plus two crewmembers. Seating is available for 42 passengers on each ferry, and the main cabins are also fitted with USB charging ports, wifi connectivity, tables, toilets, and space for bicycles and scooters. The cabin layout can be rearranged to allow the operator to adjust the distances between the seats and to install armrests of varying widths.

prada sailboat model

An open upper deck is also accessible to passengers and is the only area on each ferry where smoking is allowed.

The ferries are all of modular construction with each ferry’s wheelhouse, main cabin, and other structural elements being built as complete, separate components. This enables the ferries to be easily dismantled for transport to anywhere in Russia by rail and then quickly re-assembled within seven days.

The ferries are also ice-capable. Recently completed operational trials on the Moskva showed that the vessels can also easily navigate under mild winter conditions with broken surface ice, though year-round operations are planned for the entire fleet.

The ferries are each fitted with 500kWh lithium iron phosphate battery packs that supply power to two 134kW motors. This configuration can deliver a maximum speed of 11.8 knots, a cruising speed of just under 10 knots, and a range of 150 kilometres.

Emperium said the transfer of rotation of electric motors to the propeller is carried out by direct drive. As a propulsion installation, a pulling rotary propeller-steering column with double screws is used. The installation of double pulling screws, with similar power, allows an operator to increase the efficiency of the propulsion system to deliver a slightly higher speed or to reduce energy consumption. This arrangement also provides the ferries with enhanced manoeuvrability necessary for navigating in close quarters.

The batteries themselves have projected service lives of 10 to 12 years and are fitted with safety features such as built-in fire extinguishers and gas vents. Quick-disconnect features allow the batteries to be easily removed for replacement or maintenance.

Some of our readers have expressed disquiet at our publication of reviews and articles describing new vessels from Russia. We at Baird Maritime can understand and sympathise with those views. However, despite the behaviour of the country’s leaders, we believe that the maritime world needs to learn of the latest developments in vessel design and construction there.

Check out Moscow’s NEW electric river trams (PHOTOS)

prada sailboat model

Water transportation has become another sector for the eco-friendly improvements the Moscow government is implementing. And it means business. On July 15, 2021, on the dock of Moscow’s ‘Zaryadye’ park, mayor Sergey Sobyanin was shown the first model of the upcoming river cruise boat.

prada sailboat model

The model of the electrical boat with panoramic windows measures 22 meters in length. The river tram - as Muscovites call them - has a passenger capacity of 42, including two disabled seats. The trams will also get cutting edge info panels, USB docking stations, Wi-Fi, spaces for scooters and bicycles, as well as chairs and desks for working on the go. The boats will be available all year round, according to ‘Mosgortrans’, the regional transport agency.

prada sailboat model

Passengers will be able to pay with their ‘Troika’ public transport card, credit cards or bank cards.

The main clientele targeted are people living in Moscow’s river districts - the upcoming trams will shorten their travel time in comparison to buses and other transportation by five times, Mosgortrans stated.

prada sailboat model

As the river trams are being rolled out, Moscow docks will also see mini-stations, some of which will also be outfitted with charging docks for speed-charging the boats.

Moscow is set to announce the start of the tender for construction and supply in September 2021. The first trams are scheduled to launch in June 2022 on two routes - from Kievskaya Station, through Moscow City, into Fili; and from ZIL to Pechatniki.

“Two full-scale routes will be created in 2022-2023, serviced by 20 river trams and a number of river stations. We’ll continue to develop them further if they prove to be popular with the citizens,” the Moscow mayor said .
