Although sailing is a whole universe in itself, learning to sail isn’t as hard as it may seem for the external observer. There are plenty of sailing schools and associations that offer basic sailing courses, which will open new and fulfilling ways to travel the world for you. 

What Does Nautical Mean?

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, nautical is an adjective that means “of, relating to, or associated with seamen, navigation, or ships.” 

In other words, nautical refers to everything related to navigating the sea, it may be nautical skills, or nautical flags, or, as in this case, nautical terms. Nautical doesn’t necessarily refer to sailing, as there are other ways to navigate the sea that don’t rely on the wind, but nautical terms do apply to sailing, as we’ll see in a moment. 

How Do You Say ‘Sailing’ in Spanish?

In Spanish, sailing can be translated as a noun la navegación a vela , although it’s also simply known as navegación , or just vela . 

However, you can also understand sailing as a verb, in which case it means navegar a vela or just navegar . 

In Spanish, sails are velas , and in the world of sailing velas are of the utmost importance, as they differentiate it from all the other ways of navigating the sea and represent a symbol of independence and authenticity. 

Sailing Vocabulary in Spanish

It’s time to learn some of the most important sailing words in Spanish. I’ve divided them into six different categories to simplify your learning process.

If you plan to go sailing in Spanish, you need to be sure you know the different types of boats that exist in the world of sailing. These are a some of the most common ones:

Parts of the Boat

Once you’ve learnt the different types of boats that exist in the world of sailing, it’s a good time to learn sailing vocabulary about the parts of these boats. While some of these words are well-known and of common use, you may find others to be very technical terms about sailing in Spanish. 

Look at the image below and locate the different parts of the boat included in both tables. If you’re a sailing enthusiast as I am, I’m sure you’ll enjoy the exercise to discover the Spanish terms. 

Finally, a few more important parts of a sailing boat that are not included in the two previous tables. If you’ve sailed before, you know that the sailing vocabulary is huge, and trying to learn all of it in Spanish on a single post would be just too much. So, I’m focusing only on the most important sailing terms in Spanish. 

As mentioned before, the sails are the main element of sailing. Sailors take pride in their boats being propelled only by the wind, and not by a mechanical motor. So, you can imagine that there is a specific sailing vocabulary exclusively dedicated to the sails.

Spanish police have arrested three people for the deaths last November of five migrants who were threatened with a machete and forced to jump off the boat they were traveling in with dozens of other migrants, authorities said Monday.

According to a police statement, the five died on Nov. 29 off the southern coast of Cádiz. The police said two men and a woman were arrested earlier this month but gave no further details.

The people smugglers had threatened the five with a machete and forced them to jump into the Atlantic Ocean despite the strong currents and cold temperatures.

Thirty-seven migrants had traveled in the boat from Kenitra, Morocco. The statement said the migrants had paid between 3,000 euros ($3,270) and 12,000 euros ($13,000) for a place in the boat.

Video images in November showed many of the other migrants being forced out of the vessel closer to land, before the smugglers sped off in the powerful boat. Police said they found the boat and some documents later, which helped in tracking down the three suspects.

Four of the bodies were recovered within hours and a fifth was found days later. The migrants were identified with the help of DNA samples from a family in Morocco.

Tens of thousands of migrants from sub-Saharan countries try to reach Spain each year in large open boats launched from northwest Africa. Most go to the Canary Islands in the Atlantic , while others from Morocco, Algeria and Middle Eastern countries try to cross the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean to mainland Spain.

Several thousands die making the hazardous journey.

TEL AVIV — A private aid ship docked off the coast of Gaza early Friday, carrying the first nautical delivery for hungry Palestinians while tons of food and supplies sit on idling trucks in Egypt , waiting for permission to enter the besieged enclave.

The Open Arms, named after the Spanish charity that transported the supplies, towed a barge containing flour, rice and protein to the enclave, where five months of war have left around a quarter of its 2.3 million residents “one step away” from famine, according to the United Nations, which has noted that children have already died from malnutrition and dehydration.

The food was collected by World Central Kitchen, the charity founded by celebrity chef José Andrés, which operates a network of around 60 kitchens across the Gaza Strip. “Our goal is to establish a maritime highway of boats and barges stocked with millions of meals continuously headed towards Gaza,” Andrés and the NGO’s CEO, Erin Gore, said in a statement Tuesday, when the ship set sail on the roughly 200-mile voyage from the Larnaca port in Cyprus.

The nongovernmental organization said in a separate statement Friday that preparations were underway to move the goods onto a jetty built from destroyed rubble, although it was not immediately clear when that would happen.

The new nautical route — as well as recent aid airdrops into northern Gaza — comes amid increasing international frustration about the growing humanitarian crisis in the enclave and the inability to get enough aid in by road.

The U.S. and many of its international partners have been pushing to speed up the flow of humanitarian assistance into Gaza. But Israel has tightly controlled the entry of aid, which has been delivered by trucks through the country’s Kerem Shalom border crossing or the Rafah border crossing with Egypt .

Aid groups have said their efforts have been hampered because of the difficulty coordinating with the Israeli military, as well as ongoing fighting and the breakdown of public order, which have led to the looting of several convoys. As a result, only a small fraction of what is needed has entered the enclave, the agencies have said.

The Israel Defense Forces said the aid ship delivery was being carried out “in coordination with Israeli security and civilian authorities, in accordance with the directive of the government of Israel and at the request of the U.S. government.” It added that all the equipment on the ship underwent a comprehensive security check and was accompanied by Israeli officials.

Seperately, IDF spokesperson, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari suggested to reporters Wednesday that more routes could open up and that Israel was “trying to flood the area” with aid.

His comments came hours after the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees said in a statement Wednesday that at least one of its staff members was killed and 22 others were injured in an Israeli strike on one of its food distribution centers in southern Gaza. The IDF acknowledged the strike but said in a statement that it had killed Muhammad Abu Hasna, a Hamas commander who it said was taking aid and giving it to the militant group.

And on Thursday, the Palestinian Health Ministry in Gaza said a number of people were killed and dozens of others were injured while waiting for the expected arrival of aid.

NBC News could not independently verify this, but the IDF said it was assessing the incident. Reports that its forces attacked dozens of Gazans at an aid distribution point were “false,” it said in a statement.

These came after several incidents last month when people were killed as they tried to access aid.

Facing growing political pressure at home and abroad to do more to help Palestinians, even as the  U.S. continues to supply Israel with military hardware , President Joe Biden announced last week that the U.S. military will construct a temporary port in Gaza to get more humanitarian aid into the territory by sea.

But that was criticized by aid groups, including Médecins Sans Frontières, or Doctors Without Borders, whose executive director, Avril Benoît, said last week that the U.S. “should insist on immediate humanitarian access using the roads and entry points that already exist.”

Ciaran Donnelly, the vice president of crisis response at the International Rescue Committee, said the port was a “distraction” and called on the Biden administration to find “alternative solutions in aid delivery.”

In Gaza's southernmost city of Rafah some residents, including Zohir Donna, questioned the wisdom of building a new port, when aid trucks were ready and waiting to cross the land border with Egypt nearby. Donna, who moved to the city from the Al-Shati refugee camp in northern Gaza after the start of the war, said the aid was “only five minutes from where we are.”

Rafah resident Mostafa Gamal Elian also said the “crossing should be open, and the aid should pass through it.”

The State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the port, but Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Wednesday that the maritime corridor was not meant to be a substitute for other ways of getting aid into Gaza. “Overland routes remain the most critical way to get assistance in and then to people who need it,” he said.

In the meantime, World Central Kitchen said it had 500 more tons of aid ready to depart from Cyprus to Gaza, where health officials say more than 31,000 people have been killed since Oct. 7.

Israeli military officials said at least 245 soldiers have been killed since the  ground invasion of Gaza  began. Officials in the country said around 1,200 people were killed in the Oct. 7 attacks and around 240 others were taken hostage. Officials say 134 remain in Gaza after dozens were freed in exchange for Palestinian prisoners in late November, although a number of them are dead.

First aid ship to Gaza leaves Cyprus port in pilot project

An aid ship that has been docked in Cyprus for close to a month has finally set sail for Gaza, taking almost 200 tonnes of aid in a pilot project to open a new sea route for aid to a population on the brink of famine.

A video showed the Open Arms boat departing the Mediterranean island’s southern port of Larnaca at an unknown time early on Tuesday. Government officials in Cyprus had said the exact timing of the vessel’s departure would not be released for security reasons.

However, maritime tracking sites showed the Open Arms in the eastern Mediterranean, slowly heading for Gaza. The boat is towing a barge containing flour, rice and protein as well as water and medicines – provisions that are desperately needed in the besieged coastal strip.

While the journey usually takes about 15 hours, the aid boat and its accompanying barge were travelling at about 3.7 knots, making a timeframe for the voyage of up to two days more likely.

The mission, mostly funded by the United Arab Emirates, is being organised by the US-based charity World Central Kitchen (WCK), while the Spanish charity Proactiva Open Arms is supplying the ship.

WCK’s founder, José Andrés, and its chief executive, Erin Gore, said: “Our goal is to establish a maritime highway of boats and barges stocked with millions of meals continuously headed towards Gaza .”

According to WCK and statements in the Israeli media on Tuesday, the Open Arms will dock at a jetty at a beach site in northern Gaza, which is being built by the charity.

WCK said it was creating the landing jetty with material from destroyed buildings and rubble. It had a further 500 tonnes of aid amassed in Cyprus, which would also be dispatched, it said.

According to Israel’s Kan radio network, work has been under way by WCK and other aid agencies – with the permission of the Israeli military – in recent days to flatten the shore with machinery and construct the platform, which would allow the aid to be unloaded and transported by truck within Gaza.

The ship set sail as the president of the European Commission, which is backing the new aid route, warned that starvation in Gaza was not acceptable. The Ursula von der Leyen in a speech to the European parliament on Tuesday, said: “The situation on the ground is more dramatic than ever, and it has reached a tipping point. We have all seen the reports of children dying of starvation. This cannot be.”

Insiders in the EU say the sailing was always going to be difficult because of Israel’s security concerns and wider issues about how the aid will be distributed.

The EU is also supporting airdrops of aid but insiders say the land corridor through Rafah is still the most important. Before the war, about 500 tonnes of aid were being sent by the EU to Gaza but this has been reduced to 100 tonnes a day since October.

Von der Leyen also announced the EU was standing up a “civil protection mechanism” usedin responses to emergencies and natural disasters.

It is understood the mechanism has been triggered by the UN and the World Food Programme but will give rise to a round-the-clock emergency response centre that operates under the auspices of the European Commission.

The centre can now issue notification to member states for specific aid required, likely to be parachutes and containers, and coordinate offers of equipment with the right to reimburse member states up to 75% of the cost of transport to Cyprus.

The inaugural voyage is considered a pilot mission. Open Arms had originally been expected to leave Larnaca on Friday, then on Sunday and then Monday. The missed deadlines were attributed to “technical reasons”. Late on Monday, Greek Cypriot media reported that delays in constructing the landing jetty for the aid were responsible.

Gaza has been sealed off from the outside world since Israel began its offensive in response to an attack on Israel by Hamas militants on 7 October.

The sailing is a separate initiative from that announced last week by the US, which plans to build a temporary pier to facilitate aid deliveries by sea. Tuesday’s mission, if successful, would in effect signal the first easing of an Israeli naval blockade imposed on Gaza in 2008 after Hamas took control of the Palestinian territory.

With the humanitarian crisis in Gaza becoming increasingly desperate, international players have been scrambling to find alternative routes to supply aid.

Cyprus said its maritime corridor offered a fast-track workaround to getting aid delivered. Cargoes are to undergo security inspections in Cyprus by a team including personnel from Israel, eliminating the need for screenings at the final offloading point to remove potential delays.
