The large cockpit of the Eagle 54 provides plenty of space for you and your guests to relax and take in the beauty of your surroundings. Whether you're sunbathing, dining, or simply enjoying the views, this is the perfect place to unwind. And with the option of single-handed sailing, you have the freedom to explore and navigate with ease.

The cabin is thoughtfully designed and equipped with all the essentials to ensure a comfortable and convenient stay.There are two interior options, one with the galley and heads near the cabin entrance and a version with the galley and heads further forward. The second variant has two additional pilot bunks. Both layouts feature a large saloon with the owner's berth near the bow. Since this 54-foot yacht is a semi-customized vessel, the owners can decide on the interior design themselves. By default, the interior is bright white with beautiful mahogany details.

With halyards and the jib sheets running below the deck, the Eagle 54 has an ultra-sleek deck layout. For easy handling, the jib winches are positioned within reach of the helmsman. Just forward of the jib winches, the two halyard winches, which double as gennaker sheet winches. The halyard's tails neatly disappear in the cockpit coaming. A captive winch mounted below deck, allows the mainsheet to be trimmed with the push of a button. Also the powered headsail furler is mounted below deck. The standard rigging features a carbon mast and boom. The boomvang and backstay are easily controlled from the helm on the hydraulic panel.

The Eagle 54 is famed for its cruising comfort. Developed with a contemporary underwater profile, modern deck hardware and all controls placed within reach of the helmsman, the 54 foot yacht can be easily sailed single handed . After all, we believe that sailing an Eagle should be uncomplicated fun. And with only 9 tons displacement, the Eagle 54 is also built for performance. Eagle 54 offers a spacious cockpit where family or friends can sit and enjoy in comfort. To complete the comfort, the 54 comes with a well-equipped galley with a refrigerator, sink and electric cooking hobs, and a separate bathroom with shower and toilet. This makes the Eagle 54 perfect for long sunny days in secluded bays and a long weekend away. And with room for up to 6 people to sleep, you'll have plenty of space to bring along friends or family for a memorable sailing adventure.

Eagle 54 – an immaculately clean-decked daysailer from Hoek and Dutch builder Leonardo Yachts

Leonardo Yachts’ co-founder Melle Boersma sent us these first sailing pictures of their new Eagle 54. When I first saw them I presumed they were computer-enhanced renderings, but no, she really is that immaculately clean.

Running rigging and in-boom furling lines are all led back to the helm, cleverly hidden within the deck, with tail stowage in the coamings. There are hydraulic controls for vang and backstay tension, even for the jib car positioning, all operable from the helm.

The 54 joins Dutch-based Leonardo Yachts’ growing range of luxury daysailers, which includes a 36 and 44 designed by Dykstra Naval Architects. Take a peek at the dimensions or accommodation plan for the Eagle and you quickly understand the ethos of the boat.

She gives away 20ft alone in overhangs – now that’s luxury! The Eagle’s lines perhaps reflect how much time Hoek has spent working on J Class yachts recently.

Where the Eagle differs from a J, however, is that she promises to be a delight on the wheel, thanks to her combination of modern build and appendages. Her composite construction, with foam-cored epoxy hull and deck, results in an extremely light displacement of just nine tonnes. Moreover, her thin-chord T-keel and high-aspect fin rudder should make her highly responsive to helm, especially when heeled and sliding through flat water.

The long, deep cockpit is obviously the place to enjoy the sailing, but the 54 also has an inviting saloon and accommodation, tastefully finished in varnished mahogany. She is offered with two or four berths in a large owner’s cabin and two pilotberths.

Eagle 54 – tested and reviewed

A 54ft weekender may seem a touch extravagant, but st  discovered there are some serious advantages when we took the eagle 54 out for a spin.

Sailing yachts are almost always a luxury item, and while a 54ft weekender may be an extravagance too far for some, a quick sail will seduce many of the doubters. The Eagle 54 is an interesting and elegant addition to the expanding fleet of modern classics. Her natural home has to be the Cote d’Azur, Sardinia or the Amalfi Coast, yet wherever you sail her, you can guarantee that you will turn heads and arrive with that frisson of style so conspicuously lacking from many modern yachts. Going sailing means different things to different people – it’s part of the beauty of the sport – but there are very few sailors out there who genuinely want to own a wilfully ugly yacht and fewer still who dislike sailing fast. The Eagle range boast both looks and speed and, in an era where time is becoming an increasingly precious commodity, the concept of a big, stylish weekend sailer, low on maintenance and high on glamour, may well spell out the future of sailing for many.

Big weekend

The essential concept of this yacht is a giant weekender. The Eagle 54’s long, sweeping overhangs are exceptionally easy on the eye, whispering of a bygone time when elegance and class were everything.

Keep it simple, stupid

The yacht comes from Leonardo Yachts, a Dutch company that has been building up a reputation for turning out stylish modern classics since 2011 when they launched the Eagle 36. Its yachts work to the premise of keeping things simple. The fibreglass hull ensures low maintenance and on deck all running rigging is kept as simple as possible. On the Eagle 54, everything is push button and can be controlled from the helm.

Modern hidden depths

Given the classic styling above the waterline, you would expect the Eagle to have a long keel, yet this could not be further from the truth. Below the waterline lurks a thoroughly modern and rather aggressive-looking deep, T-shaped bulb keel and skeg-hung rudder. This gives the 54 a considerable draft of 9ft 1in, although there is an option for a more moderate 7ft 2in keel. This configuration not only gives her impeccable manners under power, but also excellent integral stability.

Great sailing

Given her design, it is no surprise that the 54 is very close winded. I also found her to be very responsive and sympathetic. She reacted to the faintest twitch of her wheel, while even the faintest whisper of wind gave her steerage. When the wind rose above ten knots, she really began to sparkle. Not only that, but as we slipped effortlessly through the water, we knew that we were in the most beautiful yacht within many miles’ radius.

Accommodation

Lengthy overhangs combined with a low coachroof, low freeboard and narrow beam mean that there is a good deal less space than on most 54ft yachts. Nevertheless, there is standing headroom in the saloon and it is very nicely fitted out with plenty of natural light.

The Eagle 54 design is the elegant result of the collaboration between Hoek Design and the builder Leonardo Yachts. The classic lines of the  Eagle 54 are  combined with contemporary features and a modern underwater body.

The yacht has been designed with shorthanded cruising in mind. With halyards and the jib sheets running below the teak deck the Eagle 54 will have an ultra sleek deck layout. For ease of handling the jib winches are positioned within reach of the helmsman. The standard rigging is in carbon with an inboom furling mainsail.  An extensive hydraulic package will allow you to adjust the jib halyard tension, jib car position, vang and back-stay position all from the helm.

Sailing an Eagle should be uncomplicated fun. And with her only 9 tons displacement the Eagle 54 will turn heads not only by looking beautiful but also because of her sailing characteristics.

There are two interior options, one with the galley and the heads located near the cabin entrance and the other with the heads and galley located more forward. This second layout features two additional pilot berths. Both layouts feature a grand saloon with the owners berth located near the bow. As the 54 will be a semi custom boat owners can decide upon the interior styling. Standard the interior is bright white with beautiful crafted teak joinery details.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Had to wait for the food for 1.5 hours and then another 20 minutes for the check. Finally called for the manager and he offered... a 10% discount as a compensation. Simply pathetic! The food is mediocre at best. Not bad per se, but one... would expect something better considering the prices. There are many places to eat in area that are much better. Avoid this one at all costs. Food is very expensive,very pretentious, doesn't worth that money. Portions are very small. We ordered ravioli and there were 4! Four raviolis! For almost 15 euros. Then we asked to bring us dessert menu but nothing, they didn't even bothered, so we payed and left... without dessert. Very poor service for that price. More

This is a very good restaurant. The food is really good, maybe the best in Moscow. The service is also good. The view from the restaurant is great. The prices are very high.

I often visit this restaurant and must say it’s one of the best in Moscow in terms of quality and service. Staff really try hard to make sure that you are happy and satisfied. Visited this lovely restaurant with a friend of mine. It was relaxingly warm August evening - so the place on the river seemed like a good idea. We came quite early and the restaurant was not full. The hostesses kindly offered several places to sit... and we chose to sit on the sofas. We had some wine, which was good. We struggled a bit when deciding about the food as few options (scallops) were not available. Fish on ice on display did not look very fresh. To be honest it was an unusually hot August and it is probably understandable that some see food options were not available. However, we did manage to order something and sat waiting and looking onto the river. My long-legged friend struggled sitting at the low sofa and the manager noticed that, offering as a very good, proper table beside the open window. It was nice touch and I was very pleased by their polite observations and immediate reaction to solve the problem. Food was quite good and presentation was perfect. Perhaps I can something about the food, but 1 visit is not enough to criticize or make a definitive opinion. Overall, quality place, which of course, does not come cheap. The luxurious atmosphere of this place, the view and the location make it quite outstanding. We had dinner here with friends and the dishes were amazing, accompanied by a chilled bottle of Chablis, it really made me feel as if it was a part of... the classic Russian movie. More
