RYA Theory Exam Guidance

Information on how our online RYA theory exams are conducted and assessed, and how best to prepare for them.

rya yachtmaster shorebased

RYA Day Skipper theory

Before attempting your exams you must have studied all of the lessons and completed all of the exercises.

Exams are taken online, and then individually marked by an RYA Instructor who will give detailed feedback.

You can either request all of your exams in one go or individually - 24hrs is generally sufficient notice.

We’ll then send you links to the online exam paper. You can open the links anytime in order to view and download the exam instructions before you begin, however once you start each exam it must be completed in one sitting and within the stated time-limit.

There are 2 exam papers: General Questions and Chartwork.   90 minutes is allowed for each paper.

In order to pass you must demonstrate that you have sufficient understanding of the subject, even if your answers do contain some errors.

Exam Conditions

Exams must be taken under “exam conditions”.

The only resources allowed are the RYA Training Almanac and RYA Training Charts 3 & 4.

You are not allowed to refer to other books (including the course handbook) or to your notes.

You should ensure that you have a quiet space to sit your exam - make sure that any family, housemates or other crew members know not to disturb you during the exam.

You’ll also need to ensure that you have a stable and reliable internet connection.

If you are taking an exam alongside other students you must not discuss the questions. You must not disclose the questions or your answers, including chartwork, with anybody else. If our instructors suspect collusion they will automatically fail all those that are implicated.

It’s entirely up to you whether you sit one exam at a time or attempt more than one on the same day. However many students find that attempting more than one at a time is tiring and we recommend that you space them out.

You should ensure that you have a firm grasp of fixes, estimated positions, course to steer and tidal heights. Pay special attention to correctly establishing tidal set and drift for any hour using both the tidal atlas and the tidal diamon tables on the charts.  Double check lat and long positions, tidal dates and heights, etc - using the wrong data is a common error.  Because knowledge of the Collision Regulations is so important you should swat up on these immediately before your exam.

At then end of your exam you will be asked to scan or photograph your chartwork and workings and to attach them to your submission. Extra time is allowed for this but you must have access to a scanner or digital camera. A smartphone camera will suffice.

If you pass  we’ll ask you to complete our Customer Satisfaction Survey (which we need for the RYA) and to confirm the postal address you wish us to send your certificate to. Once we have this, we’ll send your certificate to you by First Class post or by Airmail as appropriate. We’ll also email you a scanned copy.

If you are a marginal failure  we will ask you to conduct additional study in the relevant areas before setting you one or more additional questions and, if you answer these correctly under exam conditions, you’ll be deemed to have passed.

If you fail to get close to the required standard in one or more papers, we’ll give you detailed feedback and ask you to undertake a period of additional study and to answer some relevant practice questions before taking another paper, again under exam conditions.

For the majority of our students, these exams do not require invigilation.

You do not need to have your exams invigilated in order to:

  • Skipper vessels of up to 200 registered tonnes for leisure purposes.
  • Charter vessels worldwide.
  • Be granted an International Certificate of Competence (ICC).

Invigilation is only required if you wish to:

Obtain a Commercial Endorsement to a Day Skipper Certificate of Competence.

A Commercial Endorsement to a Day Skipper Certificate of Competence enables you to skipper a small commercial vessel (complying with the UK/MCA code of practice, carrying fare paying passengers). If your Day Skipper shorebased exam is invigilated by an RYA Instructor you can operate up to 12 miles from the vessel’s home port. Otherwise (if your exam is not invigilated by an RYA Instructor) you are limited to 3 miles from the vessel’s home port.

Invigilated exams must be taken at an RYA Recognised Training Centre and invigilated by an RYA Instructor.

We cannot offer invigilated exams at our location but can assist you in finding an RYA Recognised Training Centre near you that may be able to offer this service. You should be aware that they may charge for this service.

You can make your own arrangements directly with the centre, but you should contact us once this has been agreed so that we can liaise with the RYA Training Centre to discuss the requirements for invigilation.

RYA Yachtmaster theory

We’ll then send you links to the online exam papers. You can open the links anytime in order to view and download the exam instructions before you begin, however once you start each exam it must be completed in one sitting and within the stated time-limit.

There are 4 exams:

  • Chartwork (2hrs) - You will be required to demonstrate that you have a reasonable grasp of the topic.
  • IRPCS (90 mims) - pass mark 60%.
  • Passage Making Part A (90mins) - pass mark 60%.
  • Passage Making Part B (2hrs) - pass mark 60%.

The Passage Making exams draw on the entire syllabus. Therefore you must pass the IRPCS and Chartwork exams BEFORE taking the Passage Making exams.

If you pass  we’ll ask you to complete our Customer Satisfaction Survey (which we need for the RYA) and to confirm the postal address you wish us to send your certificate to. Once we have this, we’ll email it out First Class or by Airmail as appropriate. We’ll also send you a scanned copy.

If you fail to get close to the required standard in one or more papers, we'll give you detailed feedback and ask you to undertake a period of additional study and to answer some relevant practice questions before taking another paper, again under exam conditions.

For the majority of our students these exams do not require invigilation .

Invigilation is not required to:

  • Skipper vessels up to 200 registered tonnes.
  • Attain a Commercial Endorsement to a Yachtmaster Coastal or Offshore Certificate of Competence.
  • Qualify as an RYA Cruising Instructor or Yachtmaster Instructor.

Use the Yachtmaster Shorebased Course Completion Certificate as entry into MCA large yacht qualifications such as OOW 3000 or Master 200 certification route.

For the MCA to accept your RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Shorebased qualification as collateral for MCA large yacht qualifications your exams must be invigilated by an RYA Instructor.

RYA Yachtmaster Ocean theory

Exams are taken online. They are individually marked by a RYA Instructor who will give detailed feedback.

There is one exam - for which 2 hours is allocated.

24hrs is generally sufficient notice. We’ll then send you links to the online ecxam paper. You can open the link anytime in order to view and download the exam instructions before you begin however once you start the exam it must be completed in one sitting and within the stated time-limit.

Exams must be taken under “exam conditions”. The only resources allowed is the Almanc & Sight Reduction Tables

Invigilation is not required if you are taking the course for your own personal interest and simply intend to use the knowledge gained for leisure sailing.

Invigilation by an RYA Instructor is required if you intend to use this course as a pre-requisite for the RYA/MCA Ocean Yachtmaster Certificate of Competence Exam, or MCA Master 200 (unlimited) Certificate of Competence.

RYA YACHTMASTER SHOREBASED THEORY COURSE RATIO:

The RYA allow centres to run with up-to 12 students on this course. While this works for night school we find it is far too many for our 6-day and weekend courses so we limit the class size to 8, which means you each get a double desk to spread your charts out on. In reality the class size is often smaller and we run with as few as two students.

INVIGILATION FOR ONLINE COURSES

If you are taking the online version of the course you will complete the same three assessment papers as our classroom students. For the majority of our students these papers do not require invigilation. We will start our cruise in the beautiful tourist port town of Cascais on the outskirts of Lisbon. We will visit Porto, we will stop at the marina right at the mouth of the Douro River, not far from the famous Port wine cellars, which we will visit. We end up in the Spanish port city of La Coruña, home to the world’s oldest lighthouse still in operation. Port & Paella, sun and sailing – a winning combination!

Discovery adventure sail full of interesting, exotic places. It’s not often that you visit four countries on two continents on one holiday! The sailing adventure is planned in such a way that there is time to wander the streets of the towns and cities visited. Each place is completely different, with a different atmosphere and a different culture. Sailing in the Gibraltar area is a powerful experience in itself due to the current, weather and heavy boat traffic – great for revising your col regs! Malaga is easily accessible by plane, as is Lisbon for all major airports.

Three days of ocean crossing to the island of eternal spring. We will sail from Arrecife, stopping at the beautiful and rustic Isla Graciosa, north of Lanzarote followed by Islas Selvagenas which is a Portuguese nature reserve comprising of several small islands about 130 miles northwest of Lanzarote. The next stop will be Porto Santo, a small neighbour of Madeira with a beautiful, almost empty golden beach of several miles. Once on Madeira we will visit some of the marinas in the south of the island and end up in Funchal, the capital of Madeira. The entire trip should be less than 400 miles. Informal coaching on the way, keeping your skills fresh in the winter months.

Jersey – Dublin – Largs

A brisk, action-packed cruise across the English Channel and the Irish Sea.

The area of Brittany and the Channel Islands has one of the largest tidal ranges in Europe, with very strong tidal currents. Yachting paradise and hell at the same time. Amazing sailing experience and good experience.

Who hasn’t sailed the Biscay, it’s as if he wasn’t even a yachtsman. The Bay of Biscay is called the weather kitchen for Europe. The weather here changes quite quickly and with stronger winds, bigger waves can form. That’s why we count on a 10-day cruise so that we can wait for the optimal moment to set sail. The cruise itself should take about 3 days. If there is time left, we will take some cruises along the coast of Brittany around Brest. Both La Coruña and Brest are harbor pearls of the Atlantic Ocean.

RYA Coastal Skipper Practical Motor – All You Need To Know

What is the rya coastal skipper practical motor.

The goal of the RYA Coastal Skipper Practical Motor course is to teach the skills and techniques required to skipper a motor cruiser safely on coastal and offshore passages by day and night.

If you have not already done your RYA Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Offshore Theory, then you should do that first. You can find more information about our online course here; RYA Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Offshore Theory .

Or if you look here if you are looking for an RYA Coastal Skipper Practical Sail .

What Does the RYA Coastal Skipper Practical Motor Allow You to Do?

You will gain practice in planning and skippering longer passages with a significant number of night hours where watch-keeping rotas become relevant. At the end of the course, a successful candidate would be awarded a course completion certificate.

An RYA Coastal Skipper Practical Motor course gives you the confidence to skipper a motor cruiser in unfamiliar waters, out of sight of land, both during the day and at night. It also gives credibility to the holder’s higher skill levels and will likely be looked at positively by insurance companies.

Occasionally, charter companies may ask for an RYA Coastal Skipper Practical Motor certificate for their larger sizes of vessels or for chartering in more complex waters.

Nobody will be ready to jump straight into a commercial RYA Coastal Skipper Motor exam on completion of an RYA Coastal Skipper Practical Motor course, but the skillsets taught will enable the student to continue building their knowledge and experience as they progress in their motor cruising career.

Who Can Do an RYA Coastal Skipper Practical Motor?

The RYA Coastal Skipper Practical Motor course is open to anyone who meets the basic minimum criteria.

  • 17 years of age or older
  • 15 days spent at sea
  • 300nm at sea
  • 8 night hours experienced on the water
  • 2 days as skipper

If you have boating experience but not skippering experience, then you will want to take the RYA Day Skipper Practical Motor course. You can read more about that here.

Can You Go Straight to the RYA Coastal Skipper Practical Motor course?

You should aim to complete your RYA Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Offshore Theory before attending your RYA Coastal Skipper Practical Motor course.

While this is not a beginner’s course, so long as you have the relevant experience and skippering skills as described above then you can indeed, go straight into RYA Coastal Skipper Practical Motor.

It should be noted however, that on the RYA Day Skipper Practical Motor course certain building blocks in your learning will have taken place and so if you do not have at least a few days of experience as a skipper of a small vessel then it is recommended that you start at the RYA Day Skipper Practical Motor to consolidate your knowledge of boat handling and skippering techniques.

How Long Does an RYA Coastal Skipper Practical Motor take?

The RYA Coastal Skipper Practical Motor is a minimum of a 5-day live-aboard course, however, some schools may choose to extend this.

Is There a Set Syllabus?

There is indeed a syllabus. Each of the following topics represents a specific part of the learnings that will be covered on an RYA Coastal Skipper Practical Motor course in varying levels of detail.

Passage planning, preparation for sea, pilotage, passage making, ability as skipper, handling under power, adverse weather conditions and emergency situations detail the various aspects of the syllabus.

Read on to learn in a little more detail about how each of these is covered in a little more detail.

What Might I Learn on an RYA Coastal Skipper Practical Motor Course?

The RYA Coastal Skipper Practical Motor course is one of the most rewarding courses within the RYA cruising scheme.

On this course, you will advance your cruising and navigational skills from those previously learned. The RYA Coastal Skipper Practical Motor will take your RYA Day Skipper Practical Motor skills to a higher level. With this, you will gain more independence in your skippering.

The highlight of the RYA Coastal Skipper Practical Motor course will see you take on a passage that involves some kind of watchkeeping, something you may not have been part of before, especially while also responsible for skippering and navigation. This passage will ideally be out of sight of land and include numerous hours both during the day and at night.

Inevitably, the passage will also cover more than one tidal period or window while also overlaying various weather forecast times. Covering these in a practical scenario, under the guidance of an experienced instructor will allow you to truly see and feel how much these will affect your passage and why we need to take careful consideration of them at all times.

Further passage planning and preparation to a coastal level will be covered, while pilotage will now be covered by night as well as day.

Handling the vessel under power will not be forgotten about as you will be put through more advanced learnings both at sea and in close quarters.

Finally, of course, during the week you will cover various emergency situations, including the recovery of a casualty and understanding how to handle adverse weather.

Practicing manouvres on an RYA Coastal Skipper Practical Motor course

What Is the Cost of a Course?

As ever, many schools differ in price. We would recommend that you take a look around at the various options and find what suits your needs the best. Cheapest is not often better.

This can range from knowing if you will have to share a cabin while onboard to whether food and berthing charges are included to how many other students you will be sharing your week with.

Where Should I Do My RYA Coastal Skipper Practical Motor Course?

There are many thoughts on where is best, but to be truthful, it is what works for you best.

One thought is to do it in an area that you wouldn’t normally cruise in, that way, you can gain learnings and experiences that are uncommon to you.

It is also important to know where you might be cruising. Ideally, you want to be cruising out of sight of land at some point on an extended passage that covers a number of night hours. You do not want to be returning to the same home port every night.

Check here for RYA practical schools.

What Is the Pass Mark for the Course?

There is no specific pass mark as such. The instructor’s aim is to introduce you to the skills, techniques and experiences of cruising out of sight of land, on a watch system and making landfall.

These may all be introductions to you in this area and as such, each student will find they are at a different level.

The instructor for your course will guide and personalise any learnings so as to improve your knowledge and skills as best as possible.

As long as you are willing to put the effort into learning these skills and have come with the relevant knowledge and experience then you should be confident in achieving the desired standard to be awarded the RYA Coastal Skipper Practical Motor course completion certification.

What Comes After RYA Coastal Skipper Practical Motor

This is the highest practical course within the RYA cruising scheme. Ideally, you want to go on and consolidate all your learnings and gain experience in a range of conditions, boats and passages.

As you venture out on your travels, be sure to study any special characteristics you will come across in new unfamiliar waters such as med moorings, unusual winds or IALA B.

Once you have consolidated your knowledge, you can start to think about aiming for your RYA Yachtmaster Coastal Motor or RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Motor.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

rya yachtmaster shorebased

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

rya yachtmaster shorebased

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

rya yachtmaster shorebased

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

rya yachtmaster shorebased

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

rya yachtmaster shorebased

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

rya yachtmaster shorebased

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

rya yachtmaster shorebased

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

FEIG ELECTRONIC: Moscow-City Skyscrapers Streamline Parking Access and Control with Secure RFID

Feig electronic partners with isbc group to deploy ucode dna rfid security and parking access control solution in moscow business district.

Weilburg, Germany  — December 3,  2019  —  FEIG ELECTRONIC , a leading global supplier of radio frequency identification (RFID) readers and antennas with fifty years of industry experience, announces deployment of the UCODE DNA RFID security and parking contactless identification solution in the Moscow International Business Center, known as Moscow-City, one of the world’s largest business district projects.

The management of Moscow-City not only selected long-range, passive UHF RFID to implement in its controlled parking areas, it also chose to implement UCODE DNA , the highest form of secure RAIN RFID technology, developed by NXP Semiconductors.

“Underscoring NXP’s innovation and leadership in developing advanced RAIN RFID technologies, our UCODE DNA was chosen to be incorporated with the FEIG and ISBC implementation of the contactless identification system in the prestigious Moscow-City,” said Mahdi Mekic, marketing director for RAIN RFID with NXP Semiconductors. “This exciting project represents yet another successful deployment of NXP’s contactless portfolio, and showcases our continued ability to meet the high-security requirements of highly demanding applications without compromising user convenience.”

“UCODE DNA is considered the only identification technology to match the physical protection of a barrier with the cybersecurity necessary to truly protect entrances from unauthorized access,” said Manuel Haertlé, senior product manager for FEIG Electronic. “As a respected contactless payment technology company, FEIG applies security know-how from its payment terminals, which are fully certified according to the latest high-class security standards, into our RFID systems. FEIG vehicle access control RFID readers incorporate advanced secure key storage elements, supporting various methods for secure key injection.”

FEIG’s partner ISBC Group provided the knowledge and support for this successful implementation using  FEIG’s long-range UHF RFID . The resulting system enables authorized vehicle entry into areas reserved for private residential use or corporate tenants, while also allowing availability of temporary, fee-based visitor parking. Thanks to the cryptographic authentication of UCODE DNA, both the tag and reader must go through an authentication procedure before the reader will validate the data from the tag, which is transmitted wirelessly. This level of authentication is typically used in the most secure data communication networks.

“The system’s two-step authentication means that only authorized equipment can handle the secure protocol and the data exchange with the UCODE DNA based tag. Without the required cryptographic secrets, other readers would query the tag in vain, because the tag’s response cannot be interpreted or understood,” said Andrey Krasovskiy, director of the RFID department at ISBC Group. “On top of this, each data exchange in the authentication process is unique, so even if a malicious actor were to intercept the communication, the transmission is only good for a single exchange and the tag’s unique identity is protected from cloning.”

Established in 1992 and still growing, Moscow-City is the revitalization and transformation of an industrial riverfront into a new, modern, vibrant and upscale business and residential district. A mix of residential, hotel, office, retail and entertainment facilities, it is located about four kilometers west of Red Square along the Moscow River. Twelve of the twenty-three planned facilities have already been completed, with seven currently under construction. Six skyscrapers in Moscow-City reach a height of at least 300 meters, including Europe’s tallest building, Federation Tower, which rises more than 100 stories.

Partnering with ISBC and deploying FEIG Electronic RFID solutions, the Moscow International Business Center is delivering security and access control to its city center today, as it grows into the city of tomorrow.
