Melbourne Sailing School

RYA Yachtmaster is the only professional qualification that is accredited by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and is emulated throughout the world. This internationally recognised certificate is required by commercial yacht skippers on sailing and motor vessels under 24 metres and as entry to Mega yacht qualifications. Also, many recreational sailors take RYA Yachtmaster exams as a measure of their competence.

A Yachtmaster is “a yachtsman or woman competent to skipper a cruising yacht on any passage that can be completed without the use of astro navigation.” This means coastal and offshore passages within 150 miles of a safe harbour. These passages which are close to land or across shipping lanes are the most difficult, particularly if the weather is rough or the visibility poor.

This course is a preparation course for your final RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Examination. The examination is conducted by an independent examiner conducted non-stop over a day/night period.

Previous experience necessary: To take the RYA Yachtmaster exam you need a Marine Radio Operator’s Certificate , a current Senior First Aid Certificate and a minimum sea time of 50 days, 5 days as skipper, 2500 miles, 5 passages over 60 miles, including 2 over night and 2 as skipper. Remember that the examination is essentially a test of ability to take charge of a yacht, so your experience as skipper is most important.

This course assumes that you are completed the  Yachtmaster Theory  course or have equivalent knowledge.

It is an intensive course designed for experienced crew with sufficient on the water experience. This program is not for beginners.

What do I bring? Wear clothes suitable for the day and rubber soled shoes, preferably with a white or light coloured sole. A cap, sunglasses, bottle of water and sun screen are also a good idea. You will also need a change of clothes, toilet kit, sleeping bag and any special medicine you may require packed in a flexible soft bag. We provide you with wet weather gear (with the exception of boots) if required.

How long is the course? 4 days live aboard.

What about meals? Most meals are provided (except 2 meals ashore – dinner at pub or restaurant). If you have special dietary needs, please be sure to indicate this in advance when you register for the course.

For those looking for super yacht accreditation, the requirements are RYA Yachtmaster and STCW10 certificates. We do not teach the STCW10 courses. For information on STCW10 courses, please contact Gerry Fitzgerald at Offshore Maritime Training Centre in Brisbane, Queensland on 0428 749 166. Or call the Australian Maritime College in Launceston, Tasmania on 03 6335 4711.

A Testing Week’s Training

An RYA Yachtmaster Offshore is an experienced yachtsperson, capable of skippering a yacht or motor boat on any offshore or coastal passage anywhere in the world, up to the point where celestial navigation is required.

Duration: 5 days (Monday to Friday) Practical training.

Previous experience required: A minimum of 50 days in total spent on board a sailing yacht at sea (yachtmaster offshore sail) or a motor vessel (yachtmaster offshore power); 2500 miles offshore logged in RYA log book (of which 50% must be in tidal waters) including 5 passages of over 60 nautical miles. Two of these passages must be as skipper and 2 on overnight trips.

Anyone contemplating this course should have a knowledge of navigation to the level of RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster . The school offers this shore based theory as a separate course. Persons unsure of their level should undergo an assessment prior to the commencement of the practical course. Please contact the Principal to arrange this.

Exam candidates must be 18 years or older, hold a recognised First Aid certificate and a Radio Operators Certificate (SROCP or LROCP) .

For an MCA (UK’s Marine and Coastal Agency) Commercial endorsement on the Yachtmaster Offshore certificate you also require a Sea Survival certificate (RYA/MCA Basic Sea Survival for Small Craft or YA Safety and Sea Survival are both acceptable), a Professional Practices and Responsibilities Certificate (PPR)  and completion of a Medical examination form (see below).

Instructor/Student ratio: A maximum of 5 pupils to 1 Instructor.

Course content: The RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence is one of the highest and most respected yachting qualifications available and is recognised throughout the world. It is recognition of the holder’s knowledge and experience and can lead to a commercial qualification.

A Yachtmaster Offshore is an experienced yachtsperson, capable of skippering a yacht or motor boat on any offshore or coastal passage anywhere in the world, up to the point where celestial navigation is required. They must have the ability to do this without recourse to electronic navigation equipment such as GPS and must be capable of entering any port anywhere in the world, given sufficient navigational information and depth of water, for the first time at night.

This Yachtmaster (sail) preparation is designed as a practical refresher course for experienced sailors and will cover all skills likely to be examined. Typically, students join the course on Monday morning, meet the crew and are briefed on all aspects of the yacht and its equipment. After some intensive boat handling under power exercises the yacht will leave Manly Yacht Harbour and will not return until the following Friday. During the course each student will, in turn, take command of the vessel on short passages by day and night as the instructor coaches each on the various disciplines required to skipper the boat successfully (and pass the exam).

Specific intensive exercises are undertaken giving students the opportunity to practice for the exam. These include pilotage exercises by day and night, “blind” navigation to assimilate restricted visibility, finding an un-lit buoy in the dark, boat handling both under power and sail and man overboard procedures. Early in the week each student is given an honest appraisal of their chances of success in the exam and any weaknesses that may have been highlighted will be addressed.

The course is extremely intensive with much of the training taking place after dark. Students take the yacht to a different harbour or anchorage each night and whilst this is not designed as a theory course, there is time to recap on subjects such as weather, tides and collision regulations. Students should however have a sound knowledge of these before the course particularly the regulations for lights, shapes and sounds. Please note these will be examined!

SCY offers the best possible preparation for a Yachtmaster exam as you have been on board the yacht, with the same crew, for 5 days and should be feeling relaxed and confident.

Our tuition is second to none as these courses are conducted by Australia’s most qualified and experienced Yachtmaster Instructors who can still clearly remember the stress involved during their Yachtmaster exams

Fees : The RYA exam fee is paid direct to RYA who issue the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore and is  £231 plus an added fee for commercial qualification.

There will be an additional charter fee of $440/person for the yacht (unless the exam is on your own yacht) plus fuel (which can be shared if there are 2 or more candidates).

The exam will take approximately 8 – 12 hours for one candidate and 10 to 18 hours for two.

Links to Application forms and Medical forms are below. These application forms need to be filled in and brought along to the examiner on the day.

All students should have an RYA logbook with their qualifying passages and personal log of experience entered.

Working as a Yachtmaster in AUS & O/S

Working as a yachtmaster in australia and abroad, working in australia - recognition of rya / mca quali fi cations- important changes.

As of 1st July 2014, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) will directly recognises all

levels of RYA-YA Yachtmaster Certi fi cates of Competence. For speci fi c details of the exemption, please refer to the exemption ( EX18 - Marine Safety (Sail) Exemption 2014 ) without the requirement to apply for recognition.

Non British fl agged vessels

If you are working on board a non-British boat, your RYA certi 􀃒 cates are likely to be acceptable

but you will need to comply with the rules of the 􀃓 ag state. Please contact the relevant national

maritime authority for full details of their requirements.

For information on obtaining the MCA Commercial Endorsement please see below.

Professional Qualifications

Approximately 50% of commercial superyachts around the world are ‘Red Ensign’ vessels, ie.

they are registered in the UK or in UK Crown Dependencies or Overseas Territories. RYA quali fi cations can help you achieve professional placement aboard these. Indeed, over 20,000 professionals are currently working on commercial vessels using RYA certi fi cates of competence. Holders of the RYA Yachtmaster® Coastal, RYA Yachtmaster® O ff shore and RYA Yachtmaster® Ocean quali fi cations can gain an endorsement allowing them to work commercially simply by completing the requirements for commercial endorsement as outlined above

Some non-UK marine authorities require additional quali fi cations for captains and crew under the Standards of Training, Certi fi cation and Watchkeeping for Seafarers 1995 (STCW95).

Holders of commercially endorsed RYA Yachtmaster® O ô€ƒ— shore and RYA Yachtmaster® Ocean certi fi cates of competence can obtain an STCW endorsement if they hold the following certi fi cates:

- STCW Personal Survival Techniques

- STCW Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities

- STCW Elementary First Aid

- STCW Fire Fighting and Fire Prevention

RYA-YA and MCA quali fi cations

RYA-YA and MCA (Maritime and Coastguard Agency) certi fi cates go hand in hand. RYA certi fi cates can be used professionally in their own right, or as a stepping stone to other MCA quali fi cations, as shown below.

British Flagged Vessels

If you are working on a British fla gged vessel, the categorisation of waters and required certi fi cation below applies to you. RYA-YA certi fi cates can be commercially endorsed for the following areas of operation:

The demand for Skippers and Crew in the Super Yacht industry worldwide is increasing dramatically. There is a definite shortage of personal who are well qualified. If you wish to attain the ‘Master of Yachts 200 Tons’, travel the world on the most exquisite and expensive yachts, visit postcard destinations worldwide and enjoy the benefits of expense free living, get paid and even pick up the odd tip or two, then this is the course for you!

Sunshine Sailing Australia offers professional training to become ‘Master of Yachts 200 Tons’ in conjunction with the Royal Yachting Association (RYA). The scheme is accredited by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and is emulated throughout the world. The certificates of competence are required by commercial skippers on sailing and motor vessels up to 200 gross tonnes irrespective of length, and as entry to Megayacht qualifications. Additionally, many recreational sailors take RYA Yachtmaster exams as a measure of their competence.

The MCA administers these qualifications. For yachts over 24 metres, the MCA usually require a RYA Yachtmaster Offshore or RYA Yachtmaster Ocean as an entry qualification to their courses.

An RYA Yachtmaster is “a yachtsman or woman competent to skipper a cruising yacht on any passage that can be completed without the use of astro navigation.” This means coastal and offshore passages within 150 miles of a safe harbor. As any yacht skipper will tell you, those passages that are close to land or across shipping lanes are the most difficult, particularly if the weather is rough or the visibility poor. An RYA Yachtmaster needs a wealth of knowledge, not only to cope with plain sailing or motor cruising in sunny weather and flat seas, but also to be able to cope when things go wrong.

As of the 1st July 2014 AMSA (the Australian Maritime Safety Authority) have formally recognised RYA qualifications as acceptable for commercial use in Australian Territorial waters on commercially registered sailing vessels. Holders of the RYA Yachtmaster Coastal, Offshore and Ocean Certificates of Competence can now act as Master on commercial sailing vessels less than 24 [Coastal less than 12] meters LOA up to 100 miles to seaward from the coast or as Mate on commercial sailing vessels less than 35 meters inside the Australian Exclusive Economic Zone. Holders of the RYA Yachtmaster Coastal certificate of competence can act as master on commercial sailing vessels less than 12 meters and up to 15 miles from the coast.

This recognition is achieved by AMSA EX18 – Marine Safety (Sail) Exemption 2014.

Effectively this means that once a person holds all of the necessary certificates they can commence working on commercially registered or surveyed sailing vessels.

To meet the criteria a person must – A. Hold a RYA Yachtmaster Offshore or Ocean certificate of Competence with commercial endorsement from the MCA. (The UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency) B. Hold an approved, in date First Aid certificate. C. Hold a Marine Radio Operators Certificate (minimum of VHF) D. Hold an in date RYA, YA or ISAF Sea survival certificate or Have completed the Elements of shipboard safety units or the relevant STCW course. E. Have completed the RYA Diesel Engine course. F. Have completed the YA powerboat handling course or Have completed the RYA Level 2 powerboat handling course. G. Make a declaration of medical fitness on the approved form.

To take the RYA Yachtmaster exam you need a Marine Radio Operator’s Certificate, a current Senior First Aid Certificate and a minimum sea time of 50 days, 5 days as skipper, 2500 miles, 5 passages over 60 miles, including 2 over night and 2 as skipper. Remember that the examination is essentially a test of ability to take charge of a yacht, so your experience as skipper is most important.

If you are in need of more mileage or training, go to our RYA Fastrack Course for details.

Course Cost

The Training Course: $2,595 (5 days) Yacht hire: $750 RYA Fee: £224 for YM Offshore, or £193 for YM Coastal The RYA exam fee is paid direct to RYA who issue the RYA Yachtmaster plus £33 for the MCA commercial qualification

Run over 5 days which are spent with the instructor covering over all aspects of both theory and practical sailing that will be assessed by the examiner.

Following the training, the exam will occur as scheduled with you. We will contact you to schedule your exam after you book in for the training.

Launch your Superyacht career

Ever dreamed of getting paid a lot of money to travel the world as the captain of a superyacht?

A superyacht, apart from being generally super luxurious, is a yacht that is greater than 24 metres in length and is therefore outside the scope of a standard Yachtmaster certification.

Most superyachts between 24 m and 3000 gross tonnes fall under the authority of the UK’s MCA Large Yacht Code (LYC).

RYA Yachtmaster theory and practical certifications are the entry point to MCA/LYC deck officer qualifications and are therefore essential for anyone planning a career as an officer on a superyacht.

By the simple addition of a one-week STCW Basic Safety course, an RYA Yachtmaster Ocean theory and practical certificate may be endorsed as MCA Master of Yachts (200gt)/OOW Yachts (500gt) unlimited.

From there on, with a combination of sea time and further training, you can work your way up to MCA Master of Yachts 3000 gt and that dream job.
