PALMA SUPERYACHT VILLAGE

Palma Superyacht Village, previously known as the Palma Superyacht Show, is an integral part of the  Palma International Boat Show (PIBS), the opening event of the Mediterranean yachting season, taking place from the 25th to 28th of April 2024. It is one of the few industry-owned and operated yacht shows aimed to bring the visitor closer to yachting and offer any services a yacht owner might require, provided by trusted and well-established companies, in a relaxed but professional atmosphere.

Whereas PIBS is the hub for the latest shipyard presentations and services related to yachts under 24 m, Palma Superyacht Village displays a selection of superyachts above 24 m for sale and charter, as well as hosts an exhibition of nautical services available to superyachts. Within the dock-side exhibition there is also a separate area dedicated to Refit & Repair, representing the many specialist companies that make the Balearic Islands one of the world´s leading destinations for refit and maintenance of boats.

Because of this, our islands have the necessary infrastructure to carry out repair and maintenance work on both small and large boats. In fact in Palma alone, more than 1000 projects a year are carried out on boats over 24 m, according to the data collected by the Balearic Marine Cluster

The exhibition is located in the Moll Vell area in the heart of Palma de Mallorca, right in front of the majestuous, landmark cathedral of Palma and the bustling old town with its restaurants, outdoor cafes and quirky boutiques. With its laid back, uncomplicated and fun atmosphere, the Palma Superyacht Village is the perfect place to discover yachting.

Three days of inspiring racing at Superyacht Cup Palma 2023 concluded today with the 24m Farr-designed Rose becoming the first Wally Yacht to win Europe’s longest-running superyacht regatta.

The St. Regis Race Day finale delivered another instalment of the excellent race conditions that the Bay of Palma is famed for, with 10 to 12 knots of wind and bright sunshine.

With two wins in Class B already on account, Rose began the final day in pole position and was able to claim a third race victory — but only by five seconds on corrected time in front of the well sailed Swan 100 Onyx, who finished second in class.

Speaking at the celebratory Prize-Giving on the terrace of the Real Club Náutico de Palma Rose’s tactician Jesper Radich said: “This year was amazing for us — at times it was difficult but by the end we had super conditions. It was windy, it was sunny, it was shifty, so not a straightforward course and you really had to make decisions on every leg.

superyacht palma mallorca

“So really challenging and we came out on the winning side. Today we only won by five seconds, and it doesn’t get any closer than that after two hours of racing. I’ve done a lot of match racing and that was what it was like out there, a lot of fun!”

Meanwhile in a similarly closely contested Class A the venerable and elegant J Class classic Velsheda claimed victory with two race wins, finishing a point ahead of her J Class rival Svea, who posted a 2-2-2 scoreline. Both were clear of the modern 33m Ribelle — who won day 2 — and her Malcolm McKeon-designed Vitters Yard stablemate Pattoo.

“We have just come out of a major refit, so it was great to be here, one hundred percent,” said skipper Barney Henshaw-Depledge.

superyacht palma mallorca

“We had a good first day and then the second was more painful as we were OCS, but today I guess we got lucky. We have had ups and downs in Palma but it’s great and the conditions are so good. The regatta as always has been great!”

Announcing that Superyacht Cup Palma 2024 will be held between June 19 to 22 next year, and reflecting on this year’s 27th annual celebration of sail, SYC Event Director Kate Branagh said: “We have had a fabulous few days with fantastic racing and great weather, and everyone has enjoyed it. It’s been terrific to welcome boats back to Palma again and we are looking forward to seeing them next year.”

Branagh also repeated her gratitude for the support of long-running partners such as Preferred Hotel Partner St. Regis Hotels & Resorts, Destination Partner New Zealand, and Official Timepiece Jaquet Droz.

Other SYC Partners and Friends also include Silver Partners  Pantaenius , Astilleros de Mallorca, Hill Robinson, RSB Rigging, RigPro,  Southern Spars ,  North Sails , Marinepool, and Friends Baltic Yachts, Marina Port Vell and Hoek Design.

Meanwhile this year’s charity support will be directed to the Save The Med Foundation and their work for a clean and healthy Mediterranean Sea. For more information and to support the charity, please  click here .

12 yachts racing at the 2022 Superyacht Cup Palma

The Superyacht Cup gets underway this week in Palma, marking a significant occasion as Europe's longest-running superyacht regatta and one of the first racing events of the Mediterranean season. The four-day regatta runs from June 29 to July 2 and will see a fleet of high-performance sailing yachts put through their paces around the shores of Mallorca.  Leading the charge out on the water are the quartet of  J Class yachts - Topaz , Ranger , Velsheda and Svea - who will be joined by bluewater cruisers, modern classics and high-performance carbon flyers. Take a look at this year's lineup...

Length : 46m Builder: Vitters

Named after the Hindu deity representing the Lord of Good Fortune , Ganesha   was commissioned by an experienced yachtsman as the successor to his 38.9-metre Fitzroy sailing yacht by the same name. This time Dutch shipyard Vitters , with the help of Dubois Naval Architects , was chosen to bring the owner's vision to life. The sloop was delivered in 2013. Ganesha 's lines were inspired by the beam-to-length ratio and the low freeboard of the J Class yachts and she flies a bright orange spinnaker with the depiction of the Hindu god. She finished second in her class at last year's Superyacht Cup and will be returning to fight for first.

Length : 43.6m Builder : Vitters

Svea is the largest and newest member of the J Class fleet, hitting the water for the first time in 2017. The original lines for this Super J were designed by Tore Holm in 1937 but the yacht was never built. Hoek Design Naval Architects were called on to revive the 75-year-old drawings and bring her into the 21st Century with an aluminium hull and 53.75 metre carbon fibre main mast. She will be racing under new ownership after changing hands in April 2022 .

Length : 43m Builder : Vitters

Another Vitters-built competitor racing at this year's Superyacht Cup Palma is La Belle , an aluminium sloop designed by Dubois Naval Architects Design . She was delivered in 2002 to an owner looking for a bluewater cruiser and has completed two circumnavigations in her lifetime. During her time in Auckland in 2019, she was extensively refitted with work including the installation of a new rig. This will be La Belle 's first time racing at the Superyacht Cup.

Length : 42.7m Builder : Holland Jachtbouw

Topaz is based on an unbuilt 1938 design by Frank C Paine, the son of the three-time America’s Cup winner General Charles J Paine. The modern aluminium incarnation measures 42.62 metres and was launched by Dutch yard Holland Jachtbouw  in 2015. Hoek Design Naval Architects, who styled Topaz inside and out, describe her as “a good all-round performer”. She was the longest J by waterline length at the time of her launch but was later dethroned by Svea .

Length : 41m Builder : Danish Yachts

Ranger was the first J Class sailing yacht to be built since the 1930s heyday of the original fleet. She is a replica of the 1937 America's Cup winner by the same name, built with a steel hull and delivered in 2004 by Danish Yachts. She has had several refits since her launch to make her more competitive. Work included swapping out her rod rigging for modern composite EC6 and the addition of a carbon boom.

Length : 39.5m Builder : Camper & Nicholsons

Velsheda has competed many times at the Superyacht Cup Palma and even took overall win in 2018. After losing out on the win to Ranger in the St Barths Bucket by a single point, all eyes will be on the J Class battle at this year's regatta. Built in 1933 for the owner of Woolworths, Velsheda is one of the few Js still racing on her original bottom. She was the second J Class designed by Charles Nicholson and is the only original to be sailing that was not built specifically for the Amercia's Cup.

Length : 37.45m Builder : Pendennis

The 37 metre Oyster sailing yacht Archelon will be making her Superyacht Cup debut this year. The Oyster 1225 was built to a design by   Humphreys Yacht Design Ltd and completed in 2020. For easy sail handling, she is fitted with a Southern Spars in-boom furling system, hydraulic furling inner forestay, and a mainsail arranged to take a third reef along with a dedicated storm trysail track on the mast. In 14 knots of true wind she climbs upwind at ease at 11 knots and almost matches the wind speed on a reach. Meanwhile, in stronger breezes of 20 to 25 knots she will sit happily at 14 to 15 knots. Twin rudders were chosen for performance and efficiency.

Length : 33m Builder : Baltic Yachts

Following a two-year hiatus, Win Win is back in Palma and hoping to live up to both her name and her regatta record, after winning both her class and the overall title at the Superyacht Cup in 2019. This racer-cruiser leans ever-so-slightly towards the racing side with a carbon-fibre construction, lifting keel and a retractable propulsion system (RPS) to minimise drag and maximise speed. She has been designed to take a square-topped racing main and has a bolt-on bowsprit that allows her to fly powerful kites. In 12 to 13 knots, she sits comfortably at 11.2 knots close-hauled. She was designed by Javier Jaudenes and finished in carbon grey and a racing green stripe.

Length : 33m Builder : Vitters

The Vitters-built Missy is returning to the Superyacht Cup under a new name, Pattoo after a change in ownership earlier this year. She was developed in collaboration with Malcolm McKeon Yacht Design and is the first project from the studio. The owner's brief was for a carbon-fibre performance cruiser and resulted in her slim 7.5 metre beam, generous sail plan and lifting keel that extends from 3.75 metres to five metres. She has a carbon-fibre mast is from Southern Spars (with ECsix carbon rigging) and carries a sail wardrobe from North Sails.

Kiboko Tres

Length : 32m Builder : Southern Wind

Kiboko Tres is the third Southern Wind built for an experienced yachtsman after upgrading from his SW94. The brief was for a sailing yacht built for regattas, but also for family cruising. Kiboko was the second hull in the SW105 mini-series and is optimised for performance with a larger sailplan than its sisterships, three tonnes more lead in the fixed keel and twin rudders.

Length : 27m Builder : Concordia

Classic wooden sailing yacht Savannah was designed by celebrated Newport designer David Pedrick and takes inspiration from some of the finest classic yachts on the water such as Halloween by Fife and J Class Endeavour by Charles E. Nicholson . The brief was to “build the most beautiful classic yacht conceivable” and her build team did just that. Her classic styling is deceptive, though, as it conceals her integrated modern systems and engineers.

Length : 24m Builder : Wally

Rose was delivered as Tango G in 2006 and is the work of Wally , Farr Yacht Design , Luca Bassani and Lazzarini Pickering Architetti . She is a three-cabin Wally80 design with a flush deck, carbon rig and 3DL self-tacking jib for simple handling. Her four winches are mounted aft of the cockpit which keeps the sailing and social areas of the boat separate when cruising.

Palma international boat show (pibs) and the superyacht village (psv) return to the centre of palma de mallorca 27th - 30th april….

Back for a bigger than ever year, the Palma International Boat Show (PIBS) and The Superyacht Village (PSV) herald the beginning of the 2023 summer season in style over four days at Moll Vell in the centre of Palma de Mallorca 27th - 30th April. The 2022 show attracted more than 32,000 people and brought together 276 companies, this year record numbers are expected to descend on the largest of the Balearic Islands, in celebration of all things nautical.

''The setting for PIBS is spectacular'' says Arne Ploch, Managing Director of the Palma Superyacht Village. ''In the heart of beautiful Palma, surrounded by amenities, luxury hotels and world-class restaurants, in the springtime sun, clients are flying in from all over Europe and further afield, it's a really enjoyable time and a great way to start the summer.''

Clients are not only flying in to enjoy the boat show atmosphere, but they are also coming ready to buy, Ploch explains. ''Having PIBS in the springtime is a great opportunity for buyers, they can potentially sign a contract right after the show in May and a month later be out on the water fully enjoying the Mediterranean season aboard their new vessel, that's a unique and very alluring prospect. Palma Superyacht Village, a show organized by the Balearic Yachts Brokers Association for the industry is the perfect platform to introduce newcomers to yachting as well as cover all services an experienced owner is looking for.”

Palma also has the distinction of being one of the sailing yacht capitals of the world. A strong pedigree of not only sailing yachts but also motor yachts from 24-55m+ will be found at PSV in-water display, for sale and charter. In 2023 there are more yachts available to charter at the Superyacht Village than ever before, as the brokerages respond to an ever-growing client base wishing to spend time on the water.

PSV is also an important date on the B2B calendar, as the professional yachting industry converges in Palma to meet, network, collaborate and exchange ideas. The ever-popular Re-fit & Repair area and the raft of shoreside exhibitors will feature both local and international companies and this year is sponsored by new brand partner Estrella Galicia.

Also new to the Superyacht Village is the Innovation Corner in collaboration with leisure marine entrepreneurial community hub Yachting Ventures. The Innovation Corner will provide a space for nautical startups to showcase new technologies, and to promote dialogue between young companies and the wider yachting industry.

"We are thrilled to announce that the Innovation Corner, a new initiative in collaboration with Yachting Ventures and the Palma Superyacht Village, featured at the 2023 edition of the Palma Boat Show," continues Ploch. "As an island, we understand the tremendous contribution of the yachting industry to our economy and acknowledge the significance of remaining innovative. We are eager to meet the selected start-ups participating in the Innovation Corner and offer them the opportunity to showcase their products and services to the attendees of PIBS this year."

Commenting further on the partnership, Gabbi Richardson, founder of Yachting Ventures adds, "We're delighted to offer startups the opportunity to showcase their solutions to the industry by participating in the inaugural Innovation Corner at PIBS. There's always a real buzz at this show, and I grew up in Mallorca so the event is personally one of my favourites on the yachting calendar. It signifies the start of summer in the Mediterranean, and it is especially important because it inclusively spans all sizes of yachts and watercraft.''

The yachts are not the only attraction at The Superyacht Village, food enthusiasts will be delighted by Mallorca resident and Michelin-starred chef Mark Fosh and his team who once again will bring the Fosh Lounge to the Superyacht Village for delectable bites and refreshments in a luxurious setting, this year brought to life in collaboration with Bentley Barcelona.

Gourmets will also love sampling the offerings from Tast Out catering, who will provide their take on local cuisine during the show via their first-class catering services to exhibitors and boats.

Whether you are coming to Palma to do a little yacht shopping, meet with industry colleagues and friends, discover new technologies and innovations or sit back glass of rosé in hand and soak up the atmosphere of all things nautical in one of the Mediterranean's most spectacular destinations the place is to be is Palma International Boat Show and The Superyacht Village, Moll Vell, Palma de Mallorca this month 27th - 30th April.

Guide to Mallorca

Idyllic Mediterranean beauty

The largest of the Balearic Islands , Mallorca (Majorca) is perfect yacht charter territory thanks to its turquoise-blue waters, secret coves, soft golden sands, soaring mountaintops and a vibrant, cosmopolitan capital. Wonderfully diverse with many hidden gems to uncover, this magnificent island is a must-see destination.

Mallorca sits off the east coast of Spain, bathing in the sparkling Mediterranean Sea alongside her Balearic sisters: Ibiza , Menorca and Formentera . A stunning coastline of bone-white beaches, pine-flecked bays and deserted coves is undoubtedly the island’s main draw, but you’ll be enticed to extend your stay by the exquisite natural beauty of the island’s hinterland.

Located along the south coast, the Spanish city of Palma de Mallorca is the island’s thriving capital. World-class superyacht facilities here make it easy for yacht-goers to step ashore and experience the city’s designer shopping, exclusive restaurants, thriving art scene and magnificent gothic architecture.

Elsewhere on the south coast, sandy stretches backed by pine trees await your arrival, while idyllic coves and secluded beaches are sheltered by rocky faces in the east, soaring cliffs carve out hidden paradises in the west and, in the north, the peaks of the Sierra de Tramuntana mountains provide a spectacular backdrop to the gorgeous bays of Badia de Pollenca and Badi d’Alcudia.

Mallorca’s interior is certainly resplendent in natural wonders. As well as the limestone mountain range of the north, there are fertile plains with olive groves, windmills and old market towns, monasteries atop rolling green hills, vineyards producing world-class wines, and the nature reserves of Sa Dragonera and Albufera.

Such landscapes ensure Mallorca has something to offer everybody on a Mediterranean yacht charter , from relaxing on the beach and trying out the latest watersports to hiking and cycling. There is also an exciting food scene from the cosmopolitan eateries of the city to the hearty dishes of the traditional inland restaurants to coastal bistros serving the catch of the day.

Discover what this Spanish island can offer to you and your family by getting in touch with your preferred charter broker to discuss itinerary options and the best places and times to visit. Also, be sure to have a browse of all the crewed yachts available for charter in Spain .

Crew focus in Mallorca

Mastering dockwalking: a guide to landing a superyacht job, you need to plan where you’re going.

View of Port Adriano

Port Adriano. | PORT ADRIANO

Dockwalking is a time-honored method for aspiring superyacht crew members to secure job opportunities. It involves approaching yachts directly while they are docked , introducing yourself, and expressing your interest in joining their crew. Pretty much exactly what the phrase suggests! While the process may seem informal, success in dockwalking requires strategic planning, professionalism, and effective communication. Here's my latest comprehensive guide on how to master the art of dockwalking to land your dream superyacht job.

Firstly you need to plan where you’re going . Not all docks are easily accessible though it’s always worth a try! For example in Palma you will never just walk on in to the boat yard STP due to health and safety concerns. I have seen crew waiting outside to hand out CVs but security may move you on. So be careful and don’t upset anyone there!

Out of Palma you can dockwalk in Puerto Portals and Port Adriano . Up north there’s the Port of Alcudia which has a few yachts in too. Those ports are both accessible to the public. Some crew club together to hire a car for the day, or figure out the bus system. It’s also a nice change of scene to get out of the city for the day!

Before hitting the docks, conduct thorough research on the yachts you plan to approach. Familiarise yourself with their size, and type. This information will help you tailor your approach and demonstrate genuine interest. Do some googling, you can find out which yacht is where using online systems such as Marine Traffic.

You’ll want to dress appropriately too. First impressions matter in the superyacht industry. Dress in clean, well-fitted, and professional attire. You want to maintain a polished appearance, as this will convey your commitment to professionalism and attention to detail. That being said I’m not telling you to wear a suit – you want to be ready to hop on board and day work if it’s offered so wear something akin to crew uniform. Polo shirt and smart shorts for example, and clean trainers are fine (you do not need to buy deck shoes, I know some people recommend them but honestly after you get your first job you will probably chuck them in the bin – it’s not like you’ll want to wear them out out…). Long hair? Tie it back. If you have a beard keep it neat, and if not, then shave if you need to. Look clean and smart but be ready to work and prove yourself if offered the opportunity.

Have a well-crafted CV (and portfolio if you’re a chef) ready to showcase your skills, qualifications, and relevant experience. Include any certifications, training, and references. A concise and visually appealing chef portfolio can make a lasting impression on potential employers.

Ok so you’re prepared now comes the hard bit so plan your approach strategically. Start with smaller yachts to build confidence and refine your pitch if that makes you more comfortable. Gradually work your way up to larger vessels. Pay attention to the yacht's schedule, focusing on peak times when the crew is more likely to be on board and if you see guests are on board, never ever bother the crew, they have enough to deal with at that moment!

Approach each yacht with confidence but maintain respect for the crew's privacy and working environment. Introduce yourself clearly, mentioning your relevant skills, experience, and enthusiasm for working in the superyacht industry. Be friendly, professional, and approachable. Most crew will be nice to you, but occasionally you will encounter a grumpy guts. Ignore that, and move on. They may be having a terrible day – don’t take it personally.

Now, dockwalking is not just about handing out CVs; it's about building relationships . Engage in friendly conversations with crew members, express genuine interest in their experiences, and ask thoughtful questions. Networking can lead to valuable connections and insights. If yachts see you time and time again, tirelessly walking the docks but always with a smile and a hello or a wave, then eventually they might have an opportunity for you – or they might recommend you to a friend on another boat.

Be prepared to interview on the spot! This does happen, so if someone starts grilling you about your experience and qualifications then remain calm and go with the flow! Emphasize transferable skills that are relevant to the superyacht industry. Whether you have hospitality, maritime, or customer service experience, showcase how your skills can contribute to the smooth operation of the yacht and enhance the overall guest experience.

Superyacht crews value candidates who are eager to learn and adapt . Express your willingness to undergo further training, obtain necessary certifications, and invest time in mastering the specific roles and responsibilities of a yacht crew member.

Dockwalking may not always yield immediate results, so persistence is key . If you don't secure daywork on your first attempt, maintain a positive attitude and continue refining your approach. Consistent and professional efforts will eventually pay off!
