Thunder Tiger's Atlantic Motor Yacht RTR Review

Introduction

The Atlantic Motor Yacht

I have a brother who lives in a planned community with some very nice size ponds. He loves RC planes and boats and as a teenager even made an early RC motor yacht. However, he no longer enjoys building and so a nice RTR boat seemed to me to be the perfect gift for him. The Atlantic Motor Yacht looks like she will fit that bill perfectly! She is a nice size at just under 30 inches long. Big enough to be easily seen and observed as she is steered around the pond and yet easy to transport in the car and store in the garage at home. The hull is easy to maintain as it is a one piece blow molded hull. The deck has real wood with laser cut panel lines that give her a nice quality look. I can actually get two looks with this one boat with the optional fishing yacht cockpit. The cockpits are held on with magnets so the transition between the two looks is quick and easy. Equally important she can haul! She is equipped with a water-cooled brushless motor and water-cooled brushless ESC. As with any RC power boat some maintenance is required as the drive shaft needs to be removed and lubricated with grease. Nice brother that I am I will lubricate the drive shaft and test out the boat to make sure everything is in good working order. Since I am doing all of that it is appropriate for me to share my thoughts about this new boat by way of this review. The recommended battery pack is the Electrify 3-cell 2200mAh. I have charged it and it is ready to go. The transmitter has new AA batteries installed and the boat has had her drive shaft lubricated so time for me to take her to the water.

The box has a nice picture of the Atlantic Motor Yacht.

The wooden display stand comes in four main wood pieces that slide together. The fit is such that no glue is needed to keep the stand together. There are also strips of protective material with a self-sticking back to them that are installed on top of the end pieces of the wooden holder. The boat actually rests on these protective pieces. The wood pieces can be disassembled to be stored as it came in the box originally. The protective strips stay on the top of the end pieces. No tools were required.

The four wooden parts just slid together and stay together with any glue or screws.

The boat came assembled and there were just a few final steps for me to get her ready for operation. I opened the radio box and glued some hook and loop material in a strip on the bottom of the box and a mating strip to the bottom of my three-cell battery. The battery fits in the radio box pretty snug and it might not be necessary to secure the pack with the hook and loop material but I prefer not to have the pack at all loose in the radio box.

This is how the radio box looked when the boat first arrived.

The cockpit deck came separately packed in a small box under the boat. I took it out and it snapped into place due to the pull of the magnets that secure it. This cockpit of the optional fishing boat cockpit that can be purchased separately cover the boat's access hatch. Where it is mounted has raised protection from the front and both sides to keep the water out. The cockpit itself is not sealed but the hatch area looks fairly well protected but the proof will be in the actual operation. I am not concerned about excess water getting into the boat from the cover hatch opening.

Here I am pointing to two of the four magnets in the boat that hold the hatch cover/cockpit in place.

Boat Maintenance

The manual says that the motor drive shaft should be greased after every ten runs. My practice is to grease it before the first run and after every day of extensive running or after two days of short runs. The grease serves two important jobs. 1) It lubricates and protects the drive shaft from excessive friction with the motor shaft tube in which it is located. 2) It keeps water from coming up that tube and into the boat. I strong urge protective maintenance by properly greasing the boats propeller drive shaft.

To lubricate the drive shaft used the supplied Allen wrench to loosen the rear most of the the two Allen nuts on the coupler that joins the shaft to the motor shaft. I found a light layer of oil or lubricant on the drive shaft so i could have operated the boat for awhile without doing my own lubrication. However, since I had it out I applied a thin layer of Grim Racer Speed Grease. I slid the drive shaft back into the tube and wiped the end of the drive shaft clean with a piece of paper towel and put it into the coupler and tightened the Allen nut to secure the drive shaft in the coupler. (I have repeated this process twice since then.)

Here the supplied Allen wrench is in the Allen nut that needs to be loosened.

Preparing the transmitter and Boat

I installed six of the supplied eight AA batteries into the transmitter. Next I bound the boat to the transmitter. To do this I turned on the transmitter while holding down the bind button. That was easy. Next I had to hold down the bind button on the receiver and plug in the battery pack at the same time. I used the tip of a pen on the button and lines up the Deans connectors. I pushed on the bind button and pushed the connectors together, success.

I turned on the transmitter and made sure the trim adjustment for the throttle was down and the trim adjustment for the rudder was centered. I made sure that the trigger throttle worked when squeezed in and released back out. Leaving the transmitter on I installed the fully charged LiPo 3-cell battery pack and secured it in place with the previously installed hook and loop fastener strips discussed above. I then plugged in the battery connector from the ESC into the connector from the battery pack. I tested the steering and then tested the throttle at very slow speed. Everything was working properly. Time to go motor yachting.

Hobbico supplied this package of AA batteries for the review. They are not included with the boat normally.

Boat Details in Pictures

The boat's receiver antenna is routed up above the boat's deck for good reception.

The Atlantic Motor Yacht has two channel control: steering and throttle. She will turn left and right and she will go forward and go forward faster or float in neutral with the motor off. Be sure to launch the boat in water that is deep enough for the portion of the hull that rests in the water as well as the rudder, propeller and drive shaft. Make sure that everything is operating properly and turned on before placing the boat in the water.

You should have the ability to rescue your boat if something goes wrong without the need to get into the water for your boat. NEVER swim to recover your boat. I have an RC duck with a baby duck with hooks that trails behind and allows me to snag a stranded boat. A tennis ball with line or attached to line on a fishing pole is used by many as their rescue retriever. In a small pond with access on all sides you may not need a rescue system as the boat will likely float to one of the shores if it stalls and there is a breeze. Just be sure you are prepared ahead of time and you will probably never have a problem. If you aren't prepared that is when you can expect to see Murphy's Law come into play.

Starting Up and First Run

My first action with any new boat is to operate it straight away from where I am standing and adjust the trim control for the rudder so that she travels as straight as possible with hands off the steering wheel. After that is accomplished I drive her around at a slow to medium speed to see how well she turns in both directions. Happy with the slow speed handling I would normally check out how she backs up for emergencies. No can do! This boat has a brushless motor and doesn't run in reverse. I must remember that she can't back up and stay out of a position near the weeds, etc where I might need to back up! The trade off for the speed and efficiency of the brushless motor for reverse is one I gladly do... unless I get in trouble and need reverse DOOH!

On the first run I brought her in after she had been on the water for a couple of minutes just to make sure the hull was functioning properly and she was dry inside. I have always been able to tell this just by picking the boat up and tilting her. If there is water in the hull you can both hear it and feel it move. The Atlantic Motor Yacht had remained dry inside so I slipped her back into the water. I next made some faster runs that were parallel to the shore and saw that everything was working properly. I had a few minutes of higher speed operation and then brought her in and switched the battery. Just a little water had come in at this point.

Performance

On the second battery I was able to do some full speed runs. The manual says she is capable of doing 21 mph and she actually appeared faster than that to my eyes but I will accept that she was easily going at or near 20 mph. She handled and turned nicely up to 80% full throttle. I was still making wide turns at somewhat reduced speed but mostly making slower speed turns due to all the water plants floating in the Delta. I gradually worked up to higher and sharper turns but I kept them in what I considered to be scale like operation. There are trim tabs at the back of the boat that can be adjusted if necessary to have the boat plane properly at speed but I didn't adjust them at all during this first day of operation. The manual says she will operate for about 4-5 minutes at full speed. I like to change my speeds as it gives me more run time but it also looks better to me and makes my speed runs appear faster then they otherwise might look if I was going full throttle all the time. I got over ten minutes run time on both battery packs used during the first day. I learned to use ten minutes of operation as my gauge for me to change battery packs. Every skipper should find out what sort of time he gets with his method of boat operation to avoid the possibility of having the boat get stranded. The water cooling system and the cold October Delta water did a good job of keeping the motor and ESC cool.

It became clear very quickly that she has a lot of power and torque. When I ran the throttle up to quickly instead of accelerating smoothly she would sometimes jerk and throw herself forward with cavitation of the propeller up and out of the water. The solution for that was to be smoother with the throttle. This worked until I got up to 90% plus throttle or so. At the high end of the throttle there was sometimes a hard twist by the boat onto its right side. She kept running straight but she rolled a bit onto toward her right side. It reminded me very much of an RC airplane doing a torque roll when too much throttle is given at take off and the plane is not yet up to speed. It required me to be ready to give some quick left turn. Then the challenge was not to over compensate and go too far to the left. Fortunately, there are two solutions to avoid this condition. 1) The transmitter allowed me a solution: I lowered the top end speed of the throttle with trim adjustment. 2) The trim pieces on the back of the hull when adjusted slightly down kept the boat level at full throttle. (Be sure to make these adjustments very gradual and test. I used a pair of pliers to grab the plate and pull down in making the adjustments. It didn't take much movement to stop the roll.)

Transmitter adjustments

There are a number of trims on this Ace Cougar transmitter that came in very handy. There are two dials for trimming the boats speed on the top left and right of the controller. For the high speed right roll discussed above I just rotated the top right dial to the left. I kept making runs and minor adjustments until I no longer experienced the slight right roll. The speed was still very good and the control was excellent. Much easier to control and thus more fun.

In the bottom right of the controls on the transmitter is the dual rate control for the steering. By rotating it I could control how much the rudder moved when I turned the steering wheel. In the video below the setting was always in the middle position. By turning the dial to the left I could only make more gradual turns no matter how much I turned the steering wheel. Moving it to the right allowed for much sharper turns. Adjust to the right carefully for high speed turns.

Boat Retrieval

On one of my runs for this review I intentionally kept running the boat. When the battery was near dead I operated her close to the shore and with the tide coming in she would come to the shore on her own but I did have my retrieval duck with me just in case she was needed. Finally, the battery was so low she stopped all together. I lowered the throttle and let her just float for about 30 seconds and then I slowly applied throttle and started to steer her back to the dock. She died again and I repeated the process two more times until she made it to the dock. This rescue method was discussed in the instruction manual and tested by me and it worked. However, I strongly recommend bringing her in before this method is required. The battery fully recharged after this experiment. I won't be intentionally doing that again but it is nice to know that I was able to move the boat about 150 feet in the water after she had stopped completely and the battery appeared to be too dead to power the boat.

Water in the Hull

With the drive shaft properly greased I have had entire battery runs with no water getting into the hull. On the runs where I did extensive testing of the high speed torque I ended up with about 1.5 ounces of water in the hull after two battery packs. Just a little after one and most of the water during the ten minutes of operation with full throttle testing. I found that without the hard right roll experienced at high speed torque there was very little if any water getting into the hull when the drive shaft was properly greased. I recommend the blue Grim Racer grease.

The Magnetic Hatches

I had no trouble with the hatches staying in place on the boat no matter what speed I operated at or how sharp a turn I made. My friend Dick went to pick the boat out of the water and grabbed the hatch and got the hatch but left the boat in the water. The magnets are strong enough to keep the hatch in place for boating but not strong enough for the boat to be held by the hatch.

The transmitter adjustment controls are on the top of the transmitter.

Is This For a Beginner?

Yes! It is for a beginner and above, but not for an unsupervised child. Children should never be allowed near the water without proper supervision. They should never be allowed to operate an RC boat without adult supervision. That said, a beginner should have no trouble operating and maintaining this boat.

Motor Yachting Video/Photo Gallery

I have had a very enjoyable time operating the Atlantic Motor Yacht. She came ready to run and with just a little final assembly she was in the water and there she passed my initial tests and proved to be fun to operate and good looking on the water. Her torque at or near full throttle was a surprise but quickly eliminated by adjusting the transmitter trim and later by adjusting the trim plates on the hull as discussed above. I liked her appearance both with the included standard deck that came with the boat, as well as the optional fishing yacht cockpit. I plan to do some more testing of her during the month of November just to make sure everything continues to work as well as it did for this review. I think it would be fun to try and find some nice details to add for the fishing boat especially. Some people, fishing tackle and a cooler with some small bottles and glasses. These can be found in a good doll shop store and on some on-line stores as well. This is the type of boat that lends itself to individualization to let you make a personal statement if you want to do so. She also looks nice running clean as she comes in the box. Even my wife likes her looks and said as much on her own. Maybe I should give my brother a nice little quadcopter and keep the boat for myself and make detailing her a family project.

Pluses & Minuses

  • Nice Looking Boat
  • One piece hull
  • The laser etched wood decking adds a very nice touch
  • Handles well and can operate in some waves and keep the hull dry
  • Acceptable speed for this design at over 20 mph
  • Optional fishing boat cover gives the boat two different looks
  • There is room to add some scale details if desired
  • Can be stored and transported in the original box
  • The beginner will need to get batteries and a LiPo charger
  • Only sold in one color at this time
  • The high masts on the fishing deck needed to be glued in place, not easily removed for storage
  • There was a high torque roll to her right side at full throttle but there are several easy solutions which I discussed above. Situation gone!

I want to thank Thunder Tiger and Hobbico for supplying this boat for review. I want to thank my friend Dick Andersen for his help boating and shooting video with me for this review. Finally, I want to thank our editor Angela for her assistance with this review.

Mid Atlantic Model Yacht Club

Radio Control Model Yacht Club

Mid Atlantic Model Yacht Club

The Mid Atlantic Model Yacht Club is a group of sailing enthusiasts who get together once a month to race radio-controlled model sailboats.  Our club is a member of the American Model Yachting Association, AMYA  , which is the National governing body of model yachting.  Our members come from the surrounding areas in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Delaware.

We have skilled model builders in the club who will help new members get started and resolve construction problems along the way.  We also have accomplished racers who are willing to share their knowledge to help a colleague improve his boats performance.  The competitive spirit is always present at our races but the real emphasis in our club is to have fun and to promote the hobby of model boat sailing in the Mid-Atlantic region.  We welcome new members.

What We Sail

We race the East Coast 12 Meter (EC12) boat at the Mid Atlantic Model Yacht Club.  The EC12 is a one-design boat where all dimensions are strictly controlled.  The hull is 58 inches long with a sail area of 1200 square inches.  The AMYA  website and the EC12  website have lots of information about this model yacht.
