Live Out Your America’s Cup Dreams With These Scaled-Down Yachts Now for Sale
Winning the America’s Cup is the greatest achievement in the sport of sailing. The trophy is awarded to the yachtsmen and women who win the maritime race that is the oldest and longest-running competition of any sport in the world. Held every four years since 1851 — 45 years before the first modern Olympic Games — the 37th America’s Cup will take place in Barcelona, Spain, in 2024.
The recently released Netflix documentary “Untold: The Race of the Century” stirred renewed interest in the competition and its incredible history. It’s a David vs. Goliath tale that chronicles the 1983 America’s Cup race between the undefeated United States juggernaut, sailing out of the vaunted old-money New York Yacht Club, and a rag-tag group of unknown upstarts from Australia.
The program inspired countless sailors-at-heart to believe that with a little bit of luck, a whole lot of moxie and one great boat, they could do it, too — and they can. Sort of.
The following is a look at America’s Cup-class racing yachts that can fit into real-world budgets . Two are scaled back, but otherwise nearly identical versions of the stately 75-footers that sail for the most coveted trophy in sports. One, however, is the full-sized real thing.
They’re listed for sale right now — and two out of three cost less than even the cheapest new car. So put on your yacht hat, let out the jib and get ready to set sail on these former America’s Cup-inspired boats for sale .
2000 27-Foot Goetz Reduced-Scale IACC Replica
You can take the captain’s helm of a 27-footer that was built to IACC (International America’s Cup Class) standards, but at one-third the size. It was designed in 2000 to solve a very specific problem. In preparation for the America’s Cup in New Zealand, the BMW Oracle team was hemorrhaging money because it couldn’t get sufficient time in the wind tunnel to test its sail shapes.
The team decided to build a one-third scale model for on-the-water testing. It features a carbon fiber laminated hull and deck, a lead keel bulb with a steel shaft and a carbon fiber rudder and tiller.
Identical to its larger counterpart, the yacht is fitted with all the same sophisticated sail and mast controls that the pros use — you can even vary the mast placement fore and aft — and it’s rigged to be sailed by a crew of two. A custom trailer and sails are all part of the package.
It had been listed for just shy of $20,000, but like the dimensions of the yacht it replicated, the price has been reduced to a miniature of its former self. It can now be yours for $13,995 through Strictly Sail and Kayak in Cincinnati. For context, that’s less than the base price of a 2022 Chevy Spark, the lowest-priced new car in America.
1994 One Design America’s Cup Racer/Cruiser
If you have a little more to spend, you can get on the water in a 39-foot America’s Cup model racer/cruiser made by One Design. The fiberglass yacht — designed by Briand and built by Jeanneau — is one of three identical vessels for sale, just in case you want to put your own version of a Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria fleet on the water.
The mainsail and jib are from 2007 and are in perfect condition, the Marlow rope rigging comes with a spare and its painting is new as of 2013 through Alexseal Paint in Germany. Additional storage supports are also included. The vessel’s maximum draft is 5.91 feet and its beam measures 9.02 feet.
The asking price is 40,000 euros, or about $39,698 , and is listed for sale through Yachtworld. That’s just for one yacht — multiply the price by three if you want to take home the trio.
2001 America’s Cupper Germany 72
One of the most affordable yachts on the market is also one of the most pristine. The America’s Cupper Germany 72 is “one of the best-conserved racing yachts in this class on the used market,” according to the broker listing it for sale on The Yacht Market. Currently waiting for its forever home on dry docks in Sassnitz Harbor, it was the first German vessel ever to compete for the America’s Cup trophy, which the country didn’t do until the 21st century.
Built in 2001, it’s no scaled-back miniature. This is a true America’s Cup yacht that measures 84.15 feet in length and is nearly 15 feet wide. Built by Volkswagen AG, the vessel will let you own the seas, whether you’re cruising, pleasure boating, day sailing or racing.
The listed price is just 10,000 euros , which converts to roughly the same amount in U.S. dollars. It comes with a full inventory of rigging, electrical equipment, sails and tools.

World’s coolest yachts: IACC America’s Cup yachts
- December 1, 2021
We ask top sailors and marine industry gurus to choose the coolest and most innovative yachts of our times. Olympic gold medalist and America's Cup sailor, Tom Slingsby, picks the IACC America's Cup yachts
“I was obsessed with the Version 5 America’s Cup boats back in the early 2000s, I used to sit there and stare at the TV,” recalls 2021 World Sailor of the Year, Tom Slingsby.
Version 5.0 of the IACC America’s Cup yachts rule was issued in 2003 and governed the boats that were used for the 32nd America’s Cup in Valencia in 2007, the last Cup to use the IACC rule.
The boats were lighter, faster, and carried more sail area with a deeper draught keel. Eleven Challengers raced from nine countries, including fleet racing in a series of Acts. The 32nd Cup was successfully defended by Alinghi .

Each IACC yacht raced with a crew of 17, with a guest 18th man spot. “I was extremely fortunate. I was able to be the 18th person and the guest on one of the Oracle boats in 2007,” recalls Slingsby.
“For me, those things are just the perfect blend of technology, beauty, and as a tactical sort of boat I think they were beautiful to watch.”

NZL 10 & NZL 12
Built for the 1992 America’s Cup by Team New Zealand , NZL 10 & NZL 12 are Generation One International America’s Cup Class (IACC) yachts.
Sail Nassau is the only operator of IACC yachts anywhere in the Caribbean or along the East Coast of the United States.
The International America’s Cup Class yachts replaced the 12 metre design, which last raced in 1987.
They are much larger, more powerful, complex and costly than their predecessors, as they push the boundaries of high-tech composite engineering.
The class was used in the five America’s Cup competitions, starting in 1992 and with the last been held in Valencia in 2007.

A mega-yacht seized by U.S. authorities from a Russian oligarch is costing the government nearly $1 million a month to maintain, according to new court filings.
- The Justice Department is seeking permission to sell Amadea, which it seized in 2022, alleging that it was owned by sanctioned Russian billionaire Suleiman Kerimov.
- Attorneys for Eduard Khudainatov, an ex-Rosneft CEO who has not been sanctioned, say he owns the yacht, and have sought to take back possession of the vessel.
The U.S. Department of Justice is seeking permission to sell a 348-foot yacht called Amadea, which it seized in 2022, alleging that it was owned by sanctioned Russian billionaire Suleiman Kerimov. The government said it wants to sell the $230 million yacht due to the "excessive costs" of maintenance and crew, which it said could total $922,000 a month.
"It is excessive for taxpayers to pay nearly a million dollars per month to maintain the Amadea when these expenses could be reduced to zero through [a] sale," according to a court filing by U.S. prosecutors on Friday.
The monthly charges for Amadea, which is now docked in San Diego, California, include $600,000 per month in running costs: $360,000 for the crew; $75,000 for fuel; and $165,000 for maintenance, waste removal, food and other expenses. They also include $144,000 in monthly pro-rata insurance costs and special charges including dry-docking fees, at $178,000, bringing the total to $922,000, according to the filings.

The battle over Amadea and the costs to the government highlight the financial and legal challenges of seizing and selling assets owned by Russian oligarchs after the country's invasion of Ukraine. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said last week that the European Union should use profits from more than $200 billion of frozen Russian assets to fund Ukraine's war effort.
Her comments echoed government calls in the spring of 2022 to freeze the yachts, private jets and mansions of Russian billionaires in hopes of putting pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin and raising money for the war effort.
Yet, nearly two years later, the legal process for proving ownership of the Russian assets and selling them has proven to be far more time-consuming and costly. In London, Russian billionaire Eugene Shvidler has waged a court battle over his private jets that were impounded, and Sergei Naumenko has been appealing the detention of his superyacht Phi.
The battle over Amadea began in April 2022, when it was seized in Fiji at the request of the U.S. government, according to the court filings.
Though the U.S. alleges that the yacht is owned by Kerimov, who made his fortune in mining, attorneys for Eduard Khudainatov, an ex-Rosneft CEO who has not been sanctioned, say he owns the yacht, and have sought to take back possession of the vessel.
In court filings, Khudainatov's attorneys have objected to the U.S. government's efforts to sell the yacht, saying a rushed sale could lead to a distressed sale price and that the maintenance costs are minor relative to the potential sale value.
Khudainatov's attorneys refuse to pay the ongoing maintenance costs as long as the government pursues a sale and forfeiture. However, they say their client will reimburse the U.S. government for the more than $20 million already spent to maintain the yacht if it's returned to its proper owner.
In court papers, the government says Kerimov disguised his ownership of Amadea through a series of shell companies and other owners. They say emails between crew members show Kerimov "was the beneficial owner of the yacht, irrespective of the titleholder of the vessel."
The emails show that Kerimov and his family ordered several interior improvements of the yacht, including a new pizza oven and spa, and that between 2021 and 2022, when the boat was seized, "there were no guest trips on the Amadea that did not include either Kerimov or his family members," according to the court filings.
The government also says Kerimov has been trying to sell Amadea for years, so a sale would be in keeping with his intent.
"This is not a situation in which a court would be ordering sale of a precious heirloom that a claimant desperately wishes to keep for sentimental reasons," the government said in filings.
Even if Amadea were sold quickly, the proceeds wouldn't automatically go to the government. Under law, the money would be held while Khudainatov and the government continue their battle in court over the ownership and forfeiture. Don't miss these stories from CNBC PRO:

Iconic 'little blue boat' that calls Montrose Bay home up for sale after family makes tough decision
For almost 50 years a little blue boat has been moored on the River Derwent in Hobart's northern suburbs by the side of a busy highway.
It is known affectionately by many Tasmanians as "the little blue boat", and has floated alone next to the Brooker Highway at Montrose Bay over the decades.
Sea Breeze, its official name, was built by Robin Attrill in his Montrose backyard in the early 1970s.
His son Colin Attrill said the boat was launched at Macquarie Wharf in 1976.
"It's been on the mooring in Montrose Bay ever since, and that's why it's such an iconic little blue boat," he said.
Tasmanians curious about 'little blue boat'
The boat is an object of fascination for Brooker Highway motorists and foreshore walkers due to it seemingly never moving.
Colin Attrill said it was "absolutely amazing" the number of people who would stop and talk to him about the boat when he was launching the dinghy to go and check on it.
"The number of people that talk to me that are walking past and go 'that boat has been there forever' and 'it was there when I was going to school or every day when I've been driving to work'," he said.
"Some people say they've never seen it move. Well it used to move all the time.
"Of late it's slowed up, we're all busy and dad has slowed up. We lost mum and once that happened it impacted on family activities."
Tough decision to sell
Its owner is now 91 and the boat has not been sailed for about 10 years.
Colin Attrill said the family had recently made the tough decision to try to sell the boat.
"Dad isn't well and he's gotten old, which we all do, and the boat's got old," he said.
"Anyone who knows about a timber boat knows that they need maintenance."
Mr Attrill said the family used to put the boat on the slip at least once a year to clean and antifoul it, and do any repairs.
"But the past few years Dad has been unable to do anything, and the boat unfortunately has just sat on the mooring," he said.
He said the family decided it was time for the boat to have a new owner.
"Nobody is using it, it needs a new owner who will give it the time and get the enjoyment out of it that we had growing up," he said.
"It's a great boat, and there are many years left. Wooden boats just last."
'Next phase' for the boat
The Attrill family is full of passionate sailors and Robin's brother Peter represented Australia in sailing at the Helsinki Olympics in 1952 — Tasmania's fifth Olympian and the first to represent the state in sailing.
When Robin finished building the 25-foot river cruiser, known by the family as The Breeze, it was used for trips away around Hobart.
"We used to have family trips down the channel, down to Cygnet, down to Dover, and all places in between fishing and weekends away," he said.
"We also used to go to events in Hobart like the Hobart Regatta, the Sandy Bay Regatta. We'd be down the river at any chance, or up the river. She made it to New Norfolk a couple of times.
"The boat was all over the place, wherever we could."
Mr Attrill said it would be a sad day when the boat left Montrose Bay after almost 50 years.
"We will see where it goes and where it ends up and what's the next phase for the boat," he said.
Over the years its owner has been keeping a watchful eye on it just a matter of metres away, across the Brooker Highway from his Montrose home of more than 70 years.
"He's always been there. He'd open the blinds in the morning in the kitchen and look out the window and there's the boat," son Colin said.
"It's always been a part of his life."
