The El Toro is an American pram sailboat that was designed by Charles McGregor as a sail training dinghy and yacht tender, first built in 1939. It is now often sailed as a singlehanded one-design racer. [1] [2] [3]

The boat is a development of McGregor's Sabot design, the plans for which were published in The Rudder magazine in 1939. The design has been widely adapted and other derivations include the Naples Sabot , US Sabot , Wind'ard Sabot and the Australian Holdfast Trainer . [1] [2]

  • 3 Operational history
  • 5 References
  • 6 External links

The design was built by Moore Sailboats and W. D. Schock Corp in the United States, but it is now out of production. More than 11.000 boats were produced. [1] [2] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8]

The El Toro is a recreational sailing dinghy, with the early versions build of plywood and later ones of fiberglass , with wood trim. Spars may be made from wood, aluminum or carbon fiber. It has a cat rig, a squared stem , a nearly plumb transom , a transom-hung rudder controlled by a tiller and a retractable daggerboard. Ready to sail it displaces 80 lb (36 kg), with the hull alone weighing 60 lb (27 kg). [1] [2] [3]

The boat has a draft of 18 in (46 cm) with the daggerboard extended and 6 in (15 cm) with it retracted, allowing operation in shallow water or beaching . It can also be transported on a trailer or automobile roof. [1] [2]

The design has a hull speed of 3.8 kn (7.0 km/h). [9]

Operational history

The boat is mostly sailed on the American west coast and is supported by an active class club that organizes racing events, the El Toro International Yacht Racing Association . [1] [2] [10] [11]

The class has competed in the annual BullShip Race in Sausalito, California, since 1954. The start line is at the Horizons Restaurant dock and the course runs to San Francisco , past Alcatraz Island and the Golden Gate Bridge, finishing at the end of the breakwater at the Golden Gate Yacht Club and St. Francis Yacht Club. Due to the distance, currents and other challenges for these small boats the race is referred to as The El Toro TransPac , a comparison to the Transpacific Yacht Race. [9]

In a 2015 reviewer T. Sitzmann in Sail 1 Design wrote of the El Toro, that they "are satisfactory tenders and sprightly racers. Junior sailing programs at yacht clubs and municipal sailing classes have developed many fine young El Toro captains. High quality racing programs have kept the interest of these young sailors. Often sailors 'move up' to larger yachts and are frequently recognized as champions. Many return to the lively tactical sailing situations provided by El Toro racing." [3]

My new sailboat, El Toro?

  • Add to quote

For a long time I have wanted a sailing dinghy. Yesterday i bought an EL TORO. and while that is great and all it is not 100% complete. Namely, it has no rigging, and a bad sail. Where can i get a sailing diagram, so i can rig it properly? also, is there a place that sells sails just for this racing class? thanks.

Welcome to Sailnet Union Pacific.

thank you, glad to be here. seems a lot less inflammatory then CF

if you post pics I can help out with whats missiing, Im used to the euro version the OPTIMIST which is the same hull but not with a marconi rig in essence the el toro is much simpler to handle and raise sail etc... post pics Id be glad to help they are great little boats and are a perfect dinghy for the mothership in fact Ill be building one soon or similar to act as a liferaft with sail rig for my islander 36 cheers

as soon as i have them, i will post them. It is our new dinghy. I wanted to sail for fun, but now i may do a few fun races when i find them. It needs a lot of work, got it for $50.

not bad at all! jajaja thats a deal sails look on craigslist or ebay...dont have to buy new sheets, ebay too, or use whatever looks nice at the hardware store...again you dont have to get all crazy...Ive seen plenty of el toros rigged with chromed pulleys bought at hardware stores too pay attention to rudder attachment too the hull needs t be looked at at the trunk where the daggerboard goes to make sure it doesnt leak...there is a rubber flap on each side that needs to be there or else downwing you will get a gusher! other than that its a dream of a boat to sail and learn on I had 2 friends, the goodman brothers in stockton california who raced them extensively, as teenagers...one was national champ once great boats in any case!

I am not sure of your class. I have an FJ. Intensity sails seems to have the best market price for the FJ. Again, I do not know if they can do anything for you. best wishes, Lou

The El Torro is a great little boat that came about as a result of a bullshoot session at the Richmond Yacht Club (hence the shovel logo) in the late 1930's. We had one as a dinghy on our Rhodes Reliant in the early 70's. For information on the boats see (click on) EL TORO sailboat specifications and details on sailboatdata.com . For help with the boat, parts sources etc. see (click on) ETIYRA- El Toro International Yacht Racing Association

after fixing it up, and you get good, you can do the "across the bay" solo in san francisco for some real fun! jajaja

I did a search and saw many new sails for about 450$. When i was looking for an extra sail for my mac dinghy I saw a used main that might work for you at Atlantic sail traders for 210$ stock # 43563 and Intensity sells a new sabot sail for 150$

Philzy3985

It's basically the SF Bay Area version of the US Sabot, so while there weren't a lot of El Toro's out there, you can rig it identical to a sabot, which have plenty of info on the internet. I've been patiently waiting to get a Sabot or El Toro, with oars and a sail and use it as a dinghy and for a couple hours fun on hot days. So anything you find on Sabots can be used for El Toro's, check craigslists in Los Angeles, Orange County, and San Diego and you will find just sails for sale, and they would probably ship them to you.

Sabot sailing kit. Sail, mast, boom, dagger boards, tiller, rudder. or just SABOT SAIL BOAT SAIL

Where are you located? I think I have around here a rudder and maybe a daggerboard. Not sure what happened to the sail, but haven't seen it in years. The Opti hull is not the same. Opti has a flat bottom, no keel, only a good rocker. El Toro is maybe 4 inches longer, and has a slight V to the bottom.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Russia Maps Show 25% of Moscow Without Power Amid Winter Freeze 'Emergency'

R ussian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the nationalization of an ammunition plant in Moscow after a mechanical failure caused tens of thousands of Muscovites to lose heat and water amid freezing temperatures beginning last week.

On January 4, a heating main burst at the Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant in the town of Podolsk, which is around 30 miles south of central Moscow. Since then, tens of thousands of Russians are reported to have no heating in their homes in the Moscow region amid subzero temperatures.

Affected areas include the cities of Khimki, Balashikha, Lobnya, Lyubertsy, Podolsk, Chekhov, Naro-Fominsk, and Podolsk, a map published by a Russian Telegram channel and shared on other social media sites shows.

Other Russian media outlets reported that in Moscow, residents of Balashikha, Elektrostal, Solnechnogorsk, Dmitrov, Domodedovo, Troitsk, Taldom, Orekhovo-Zuyevo, Krasnogorsk, Pushkino, Ramenskoye, Voskresensk, Losino-Petrovsky, and Selyatino are also without power.

That means that in total, more than a quarter of Moscow's cities have been hit with power outages and a lack of heating.

Newsweek has contacted Russia's Foreign Ministry for comment via email.

Many residents have taken to publishing video appeals on social media to complain about their freezing conditions. In one clip, people living in Moscow say that they are left with no choice but to warm their homes with gas stoves, heaters, and "whatever else we can find." Others said they are lighting fires in the streets to keep warm.

Andrei Vorobyov, governor of the Moscow region, announced on Tuesday that Putin ordered the ammunition plant to be nationalized because two of its owners have been "located abroad." He didn't name the individuals.

"We received the right to take control of this boiler house within the framework of an emergency," Vorobiev said, adding that the plant's boiler room was managed "very poorly" and there was "virtually no qualified competent personnel."

Russia's Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case over Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant not meeting safety requirements.

On Tuesday, the committee said that because of the incident, the deputy head of Podolsk's administration, the head of the plant's boiler house, and the general director of the ammunition plant had been detained.

Residents of Selyatino have described the situation as "some kind of struggle for survival," Russian Telegram channel ASTRA reported.

Power outages have also struck St. Petersburg, Rostov, Volgograd, Voronezh, Primorsky Territory, and Yekaterinburg.
