Review: Trinity Yachts 122' Sportfish "Mary P"

Discussion in ' Trinity Yacht ' started by YachtForums , Oct 17, 2011 .

Dominating the forward quarter, the VIP Suite follows the “underwater” color patterns, and boasts its walk-around, raised queen-size berth. In addition, this room seems to have a “gimme” on the attractive “Deep Sea Dance of the Mermaids” and her salt water denizens. This may be the most comforting cabin for a grand night’s sleep, unless the night run hits a few rogue waves.

As we make note of the “perhaps” situation, let’s take a close-up look into the night panorama of that lucky denizen who won the night-time lottery. Gorgeous! to say the least; if you’re not up all night marvelling at the passers-by.

Without question, Trinity has built a marvellous reputation over many years. This newest Mary P launch presents a highly capable, advanced sport-fishing-cruising-yacht that will undoubtedly attract many followers. Stylish, extremely capable; the size and outfitting of the yacht Mary P allows her to travel where the action is, and to perform as she was designed to do. As the number of sportfishing and cruising members continues to grow, Mary P seems certain to affirm Trinity’s top place in the draw. DETAILS What lurks beneath the waterline of Mary P is state of the stabilized art. This boat doesn't simply have motion control, it's got ocean control!

mary p yacht specs

What's this launch tube protruding from the bow? Mary P takes tournament fishing seriously. If you can't raise a bigger fish, then sink the competition! Joking aside, this is forward scanning sonar. Here fishy-fishy! That hole in the bow contains a Quantum QT-120 bow thruster that churns a pair of 4-bladed counter rotating props. To give you a sense of scale, the tube for the thruster is approximately 2 feet in diameter!

mary p yacht specs

Why have the exhaust exit under the hull? A pair of 2550 hp engines expel a lot of air. That same air can be used to create pressure under the hull, which adds lift that can aid in faster planing, as well as an aerated layer aft of the exit that can help offset drag.

mary p yacht specs

Why is this pipe protruding out of the hull? Because it puts a new spin on stability! This is Quantum's MAGLift stabilizer which uses the Magnus Effect to induce roll. Say what? The Magnus effect is the phenomenon whereby fluid passing over a spinning object creates a cyclone of fluid around itself, which results in a force perpendicular to the line of motion. The system is designed to provide roll stabilization between 4 and 15 knots. Above that speed, the rotors return to the retracted position (shown here) to reduce drag. The system utilizes a spinning sheath, like an exterior tube, that rotates with waterflow.

mary p yacht specs

The MAGLift system is particularly useful when traditional fin stabilizers would add too much drag, such as a hi-speed planing hull like Mary P. Think of it as a retractable fin system. The principle behind the MAGLift is elemental. A spinning object moving through a fluid departs from a straight path because of pressure differences that develop as a result of velocity changes above and below a spinning body. For example, when a ball is thrown, the turning ball drags some of the air around with it. The drag of the side of the ball turning into the air (into the direction the ball is travelling) retards the airflow, whereas on the other side the drag speeds up the airflow. Greater pressure on the side where the airflow is slowed down forces the ball in the direction of the low-pressure region on the opposite side, where a relative increase in airflow occurs.

mary p yacht specs

Two 5.5" diameter Aquatech shafts are twisted by a pair of Cat 3512C (2550 hp) engines, reduced by a set of ZF gears, then exit the hull through Tides Marine shaft seals with 5-blade Nibral props as the final destination. Mary P's centerline skeg is slightly lower than the props, in case she has to beach the tide. Note the angle of the transom is not vertical, the rake helps in backing on a fish by letting some of the water go under the boat easier.

mary p yacht specs

Trim tabs, right? There's more here than meets the eye. These tabs also work as stabilizers! That's right, these gyro controlled, hydraulically activated tabs add deflection (lift) as needed.

mary p yacht specs

Note the offset placement of the rudders to better facilitate prop removal. The rudders are a symmetrical airfoil design and have a total of 35 degrees of deflection to counter about 100 feet of keel trying to follow a straight track. This transom design was specifically tested in the tank to make sure it would work. Also note the slight “V” when looking at the stern, acts like a shallow bow when going astern. There is an underwater camera in the transom as well as cameras on the outriggers, all to study fish in the baits or striking.

Just how big is Mary P? Two technicians comfortably fit into the propeller pockets...

PBIBS19: Fish first, yacht second on Mary P

By Dorie Cox

Three yacht crew sit casually on the transom of the 122-foot Trinity sportfish yacht. A drawing of the yacht profile is printed above the name Mary P on their white T-shirts. It looks to be a regular Thursday afternoon between billfish tournaments in the yacht’s homeport of Biloxi, Mississippi. But it’s not.

The yacht is docked among hundreds of boats, nearly 100 megayachts and many smaller sportfishers in the Palm Beach International Boat Show in March. A couple of things make this scenario unique – both the crew and the yacht itself. Noticeable is that no crew member is standing at attention on the passerelle to greet potential clients and yacht brokers. In fact, there is no passerelle, just the open transom door with a small leap to board.

And where most yachts of this size have several stews, this boat has none.

“No stews,” Capt. Chris Breeland said. “We all play our part. It’s family oriented, it’s not like ‘this is your job.’”

Fishing or not, the three mates and the captain keep the yacht in perfect order.

“With this boat, I think there are high expectations, but they’re realistic,” said Capt. Breeland, a quiet-spoken 30-year-old seated at ease with a foot on the sole and a knee up on the transom. His dark, windblown hair gives the appearance of having just returned from a day at sea, and his aviator sunglasses reflect the sun’s glare whether he’s driving from the flybridge 30 feet up or here in the cockpit.

Capt. Breeland has been with this yacht’s owners for 10 years, and he previously worked on smaller fishing boats.

“I’ve worked from down here to up top,” he said while seated in the cockpit next to the hydraulic fish-fighting chair. “You start down here and if all goes well, you end up on the bridge.”

Where many other yachts in the boat show highlight the interior, the Mary P ’s crew spend much of their time in the cockpit. They all love fishing.

“But we still are working,” Capt. Breeland said. “Learning to spot fish? You learn over time. You learn it for yourself and you put your own intuition on it.”

mary p yacht specs

Breeland grew up in Biloxi and is surprised when people ask about what the yacht does. It is a sportfisher filled with rows of fishing rods and two nearly 40-foot-long outriggers, after all.

“A thousand people ask me, ‘Do you guys actually fish?’ If it’s not at the dock, it’s fishing,” he said.

For pelagic tournaments, another crew member or two are added, whether in the Gulf of Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica or another spot where billfish are found.

“In fishing, it’s normal to hire a local kid out of respect to the area where you are,” Capt. Breeland said. “Wherever we fish, we hire one of those guys.”

Where many of the surrounding yachts have personal watercraft, stand-up paddleboards and other water toys for deck crew to maintain, the crew on the Mary P has a workshop right inside the door to the crew’s quarters and engine room specifically for work on rods, reels and tackle. Something else that differs is how the yacht operates.

“Everything is oversized for sport fishing,” Capt. Breeland said. And although the engine is mostly the same, the yacht is designed to go in reverse.

“Stern-down at 10 to 12 knots backwards. And it’s designed to keep a dry stern – it lifts to an extent,” he said.

That is key to a successful sportfish yacht, said Billy Smith, a broker with Merle Wood & Associates.

“Backing is important or big fish will spool you,” Smith said.

Smith knows all the unique features of this yacht – he has worked with it since the beginning when he was at the build yard as former shareholder and former vice president of sales and marketing at Trinity Yachts, LLC. He left the company in June 2015.

“I sat with owners and walked them through the design and build as owner of Trinity, first in 2005,” Smith said.

The project faced delays when Hurricane Katrina hit and the yard went through changes, but the focus of the build team remained.

“We’ve all been in the military – you establish your mission profile: The guy says he wants to catch a thousand-pound blue marlin in places no one catches them,” Smith said. On a tour of the engine room, he explained that the transom meets that goal with a rake that “serves as a little bow.”

“When it was designed, it was tank-tested in reverse,” Smith said. “I don’t know how many yachts do that.”

Smith points to several other features that he said are unique.

“This is the only sportfish yacht in the world that is classed to American Bureau of Shipping standards,’” he said. “She just completed her 10-year ABS survey.”

As an aid to maneuvering in reverse, freeing ports allow excess water to flow out on the side, not the stern, and the exhaust is also off to the side and underwater. From the type of crew to the yacht design, this yacht has one focus.

“First thing is fishing,” Capt. Breeland said. “This is what I enjoy.”

Although the size, accommodations and price tag rank this boat among luxury yachts, Capt. Breeland considers the Mary P a sportfish, not a yacht.

“I’ve really never stepped foot on one of the yachts,” he said as he looked around the show. He pauses for a second and remembers one time he did. But he is clearly more at home on Mary P .

“It still amazes me to this day,” he said of a life doing what he loves. “We all know each other in this – in fishing. We get a big tournament about once a week and when you’re sitting on the dock with 50 to 60 other boats, it’s hard to describe.”

It is only the first day of the four-day boat show. Capt. Breeland looked down and quietly said, “It’s time to go fish.”

Sportfish Yachts: A Journey Through The World’s Biggest Fishing Boats

Steve

The Biggest Luxury Sportfishing Yachts

Whether you are interested in big sportfishing yachts or small express boats, this article will feature some of the best sportfishing boats in the world.

The Best Sportfishing Boats in the World  will be built for rough seas well offshore (In blue water) while also being able to travel long distances in the best of today’s modern and luxurious creature comforts, but that’s not really what separates them from motor yachts.

What makes a  Sportfishing Boat  great is the ability to raise and catch some of the world’s most sought-after trophy gamefish, such as the famous  Blue Marlin .  Below are some of the best and biggest sportfishing boats you will see as of 2023!

90 Foot Jarrett Bay “Jaruco”

Jaruco Jarrett Bay Custom Sportfishing Boat

In December 2017,  Jarrett Bay  unveiled its finest sportfish yacht yet.   “ Jaruco”  is a magnificent vessel that spans 90 feet and can carry a whopping 4,400 gallons of fuel!

Here’s why the 90′ Jaruco is an evolutionary  sportfish yacht  that will forever change the face of sportfish tournaments. And it starts with titanium.

Jaruco’s design stands out with its use of titanium. They make its propeller shaft from an ultra-strong but lightweight titanium that has innovated modern yacht design.

These 30-foot propellor shafts save more than a thousand pounds of weight compared to the usual stainless-steel shafts. Titanium’s low density and high strength are a plus for Jaruco, but there is an extra benefit from the steel. It’s resistant to saltwater corrosion, making its lifespan longer than competitors.

Jaruco Engine room and Tech

Regarding tech,  Jaruco  is making sure to keep up its modern reputation. The console has five screens with every switchgear and control to monitor almost every system on the boat.

A high-tech hardtop helps the crew stay in touch with any onshore while taking on the seas. But the tech is just the start in ensuring this yacht performs at its best.

Engines: Twin 2,600 hp MTU 16V 2000 M96Ls  ensure long-range and impressive speeds making long-distance fishing trips no hassle. There are many other mechanical specs to highlight, such as:

  • A custom-built fiber torque cage that works in line with an elaborate port,
  • A mod interceptor stabilization and trim control system by Humphree.
  • And an impressive pair of Northern Lights 40 kW generators powering the luxuries of this yacht.

Jaruco Interior

Speaking of luxuries, let’s look closer at  Jaruco’s interior . To start, it has a 450 square foot covered bridge with a climate-controlled entertaining area with a 360 view to give every one of your guests an unforgettable sight.

The entire interior has a layout of high-gloss finishes that leads you to the 465-square-foot salon with a full-functioning galley and bars. Stunning woods juxtaposed the bright walls of the cabins, and the 8-drawers dressers and side tables matched the impressive beds.

There is a beautiful U-shaped dinette that faces an L-shaped settee. All in all, Jaruco is a beautiful sportfish yacht.

Blackwell Boatworks 68ft Sportfish

Blackwell Boatworks Custom 68′

The “68ft  Blackwell Custom Sportfish  is one of those head turners in the world of Custom Sportfishing Boats, and that’s because you won’t find many around.  At the time of this article, I believe there are only two 68  Blackwell Boatworks  models ever made.  One being the “Wild Hooker” and the other being the “C-Ya.”  If you are aware of more, or if this is the same boat, please comment below!

As for the specs we do know about, the 68′ Blackwell, The  “Wild Hooker”  website does offer a few specs:

  • Built in 2008
  • Powered by Twin  Caterpillar C-32S ,s with 1800 horsepower each
  • Top Speed: 38 knots
  • Cruise Speed: 32 knots
  • Based off of the C-Ya we are assuming the following:
  • Fuel Capacity: Approx 2300 Gallons
  • Water: Approx 250 gallons
  • Interior: 4 staterooms, 3 heads

92 Foot Viking Sportfish

The next boat on our list fits well into the  Big Sportfishing Boat  category:   The 92 Foot Viking.   The 92′ is still considered the Flagship for  Viking , although production ceased due to environmental regulations (She will be replaced by the  90′ Viking ).

Despite her production years coming to an end, the 92 will continue to have an impact on the industry for years as she is a proven workhorse for the most avid and financially well-off anglers worldwide.

The average price for a 92′ Viking was Ten Million Dollars , although you could always add features and make her cost a little more (Wink, Wink).

Her standard  power package was Caterpillar C-32A boasting 1925hp each , but if that wasn’t enough fuel burn for you, you could always toss in twin 2,635-hp MTU 16V2000 M96L Diesels.

Speeds with the MTU package exceeded 40mph  while still offering a range of 507 miles, albeit while burning and an incredible 260 gallons per hour!

The 92 Viking came in the variations:

  • Convertible
  • Enclosed Bridge

Lanakai Sportfish Yacht- (129ft)

Lanakai Sportfishing Yacht 12

Yachting Developments  doesn’t make many  Sportfishing Boats , but they make them big when they do!  This is the  biggest Sportfish  they have made to date: The “Lanakai” Sportfisherman Yacht.

Naval Architect  Michael Peters  didn’t hold much back on this boat, building a 129ft (39.5m) vessel that can accommodate 10 guests and 5 crew comfortably.

What really makes the “Lanakai Special is her  Carbon Fibre  hull and superstructure, which, combined with twin MTU engines, can give her a top speed of 29.5 knots and a cruising speed of 20.0 knots.

There also won’t be any desperate need to stop for fuel as the Lanakai can hold 10,566 gallons of fuel!

Delivered in 2008 by Trinity Yachts as the  Worlds biggest Sportfishing Boat , the 37.19 meter (122ft) sportfish “ Mary P ” is was built to impress the avid fisherman.  A couple highlight specs and features for the Mary P. Include:

  • 10 Knot backdown speed
  • Twin 2,550hp Caterpillar Diesel Engines
  • Top spd of 25 knots

  • Aluminum superstructure

The Mary P was designed by Doug Sharp with Geoff Van Aller and is the only sportfish yacht to be constructed according to ABS class. Interiors are crafted by Judy Bell Davis, offering accommodations for up to eight guests and three crew; amenities include a skylounge, bar and formal dining area forward.

Bayliss Boatworks 90ft Sportfish

After more than 3 years of building, starting in 2013,  Bayliss Boatworks  finished their first 90ft Hull named “ Singularis .”  John Bayliss described the hull as very similar to his previously completed 80 and 84 models, noting that the 90 was simply cut a bit longer and wider to support the additional weight.

Despite being 180,000 pounds, the twin MTU94 Diesel engines push the Singularis at an astonishing max speed of 38 knots while her comfortable cruise sits right around 30 knots.  The backdown speed of the “Singularis”, which is important for any sportfish, is also very impressive.

Some of the basic specs include the following:

  • LOA: 90’1.5″
  • Beam: 22’11”
  • Draft: 5’10”
  • Disp.: 180,000 lb.
  • Fuel: 4,000 gal.

Project 406- 171ft (52 meters)

Project 406 171ft Sportfishing Yacht

Project 406 by Royal Huisman represents what will be the Biggest Sportfishing Boat in the World at an enormous 171ft long. Her hull and superstructure are being built using aluminum to keep the weight down without sacrificing durability and strength. The outriggers on project 406 will be the longest outriggers on earth once they hit the water and will allow the captain to stretch his lines 304 times the boat’s beam , which in the case of Project 406 is going to be quite impressive to see.

Project 406 is set to launch sometime in 2023, and to say we cannot wait to see her splash would be an UNDERSTATEMENT!
