Chiemsee, Germany

Where is the chiemsee.

The Chiemsee is the largest lake in Bavaria and is a popular destination for a day trip and for longer stays. It is located just off the motorway between Munich and Salzburg in Austria.

As well as the lovely scenery, with the mountains to the south, the lake has two attractive islands which can be reached by boat trip and a number of different villages to explore.

It is also one of the stages on the German Alpine Road tourist route. Bernau am Chiemsee is the most commonly mentioned if driving the route straight through but those who are planning to make a stop might want to make the short drive north to Prien on the lake shore.

How to get to the Chiemsee

Nearest airport to the chiemsee.

Salzburg Airport is the closest and one of the most convenient airports for travel to the Chiemsee. The distances below are given for Prien am Chiemsee, the main resort on the lake:

Distance to Salzburg Airport: 60km Distance to Munich Airport: 88km Distance to Innsbruck Airport: 134km

Salzburg Airport is a little bit closer to much of the lake than Munich Airport - both have good public transport and motorway connections with Munich edging it on the wider range of destinations served by the airport.

Innsbruck is certainly an option but definitely a third choice.

Train stations on the Chiemsee

The Chiemsee is served by three train stations, all on the main Munich to Salzburg line with trains run by the hourly Meridian services.

Prien and Bernau both have their own stations, while the eastern side of the lake is most accessible from Übersee, a town to the south of the lake.

Where to stay around the Chiemsee

If you know when you are planning to go but haven't decided on accommodation, then use the map below to get an idea of what properties are available and to compare prices during the period you wish to travel.

Enter your proposed dates and use the '+' to zoom in on a location and reveal more properties. Click on the price above a property to see more information.

( Please note that this selection will also include some guesthouses, pensions and self-catering apartments for those who are interested in that form of accommodation !)

Prien am Chiemsee

Prien am Chiemsee is the largest of the villages on the Chiemsee with a population of around 10,000. Back in the 19th century it was only a tiny village but the advent of the rail link from Munich and the opening of Herrenchiemsee Castle to the public in the later half of the 1800s meant that it became a popular destination for visitors.

The flood of tourists who descended on the village meant that the connections between the settlement and the lakeshore - until now carried out in horse and cart - became completely inadequate.

The "Chiemsee Bockerl" - the steam train between Prien and its harbour at Stock - was finished in 1887 and is still one of the main ways for visitors to reach the lake.

The parish church and market square in Prien am Chiemsee

The central square of the town features the parish church of Maria Himmelfahrt, built in the early 18th century. The small chapel in front of it is the Arme Seelen Kapelle ( Chapel of the Poor Souls ), dating from the 16th century.

Website : www.tourismus.prien.de

Seebruck am Chiemsee

Seebruck is situated on the northern shore of the Chiemsee and has a population of just over 1500 inhabitants. It was originally a stop on the Roman trade route between Augsburg and Salzburg.

The view of Seebruck from an approaching ferry features the masts of many yachts and the yacht harbour in the village is one of the largest in Bavaria.

Website : www.seeon-seebruck.de

Chieming am Chiemsee

Chieming is located on the eastern shore of the Chiemsee and is a small town of just over 4500 inhabitants. It is named - like the lake and the region - after the legend of an old Bavarian noble Chiemo who is supposed to have lived in this area.

It dates however back further than Chiemo, showing traces of Roman and Celtic settlement. Nowadays it is the second largest resort on the lake after Prien on the opposite western shore.

Website : www.chieming.de

Bernau am Chiemsee

Bernau is the third most popular village for visitors to the Chiemsee and is situated on the southwestern corner of the Chiemsee near the motorway between Salzburg and Munich.

The town of 6500 inhabitants is set back from the lake and access to the shore and ferry service is actually via the hamlet of Felden on the other side of the motorway.

Bernau is a stage on the German Alpine Road route between Oberaudorf and Reit im Winkl .

Website : www.bernau-am-chiemsee.de

The Fraueninsel

The Fraueninsel, or Frauenchiemsee as it is sometimes called, is the second largest island in the lake.

The name ('Frauen' meaning 'ladies') probably refers to the Benedictine convent which was established on the island in the 8th century (the oldest convent in Germany).

The convent is a place of pilgrimage to the remains of St Irmgard, who died at here in the 9th century. She was the daughter of one of the Bavarian Kings and the abbess of the convent.

The Fraueninsel in Lake Chiemsee

The island has a peaceful and atmospheric setting and is (and was) a popular location for artists. It has a permanent population of around 300 inhabitants.

Lake Chiemsee

The bavarian sea....

bavaria yachts chiemsee

Like a delightful painting. Lake Chiemsee. The islands. The mountains. Picture-book Bavaria. Let yourself by carried away - on the steam ship, to the islands, over to Herrenchiemsee Palace.

Affectionately referred to as the "Bavarian Sea", Chiemsee is Bavaria's largest lake, covering an area of 80 square kilometres, with a circumference of approx. 64 km and a maximum depth of 73.4 m.

Lake Chiemsee was originally 250 m deep, but the Tiroler Achen river to the south has been shifting sand and clay from the mountains into the lake for thousands of years. If you were to stack the annual deposits of suspended matter on top of each other, they would amount to a 42 m high football pitch.

But there's no need for you to hurry to visit the lake: it's expected to survive for another 7,000 to 8,000 years. Plenty of time for you to discover it at your leisure!

Home / Places / Chiemsee: Experience the breathtaking view of the prestigious lake in Bavaria

Chiemsee: Experience the breathtaking view of the prestigious lake in Bavaria

Chiemsee is breath-taking, and picturesque lake in Germany. It is a freshwater lake which is placed near Rosenheim. Another fame name earned by the lake is ‘The Bavarian sea’ as the lake holds the crown of being the largest lake in Bavaria and third-largest in Germany. The mesmerizing beauty of the lake and the sports based on water make the area a popular and act as anti-stress therapy for the people dwelling in the city. The lake is visited by the Munich dwellers on weekends to find tranquility and calmness from the usual city chaos and get the crisp Alpine air and refreshing heavenly cool and shimmering waters.

The freshwater and pristine lake have the rivers Tiroler, Achen, and Prien gushing around from the South while the river Alz flows from the North. Alz River flows in the Inn and merges with the Danube. The beautiful and huge lake makes partitions between the north and the south, the north-east being known as Weitsee while the southwest is famed with the name-Inselsee. The environs around the Chiemsee is called Chiemgau which is a well-known recreation area surrounding the lake with the naturally beautiful landscape in Bavaria.

The natural landscape being the most pleasant recreation areas in Bavaria having excellent holiday resort with the blend of divinely amazing water and view of high mountain summits. There are three major islands of Lake Chiemsee namely- the Frauninsel Island, Herreninsel Island and Krautinsel Island containing the beauty of its own along with gorgeously crafted churches and monasteries and lush green parks making the visit worth a watch. The towns near the lake- Prien, Chiemsee, and Bernau make the view of the lake delightful. These breathtaking natural landscapes are visited by people from all parts of the world, all throughout the year.

Chiemsee or affectionately called ‘Bavarian Sea’ is located 90 kilometers away from Munich in Bavaria to the southeast, Germany. One can get there through autobahn towards Salzburg from Munich and take a turnoff to Prien-Bernau exit. It takes about an hour from Munich to reach the lake. When we head to the north of Prien, approximately 6 kilometers away, we find a ride in waters to one of the islands of Herreninsel (gentleman’s island) from where one can get breathtaking views of the lake and the delightful Alps Mountain in the background. Another location from which you can take the best sight of the lake is by reaching the other islands placed on the lake -Herrenchiemsee(biggest island), Krautinsel (herb Island)- an inhabited island smaller than Herreninsel and Frauneninsel (lady’s island). The town has rivers gushing in like river Alz from North and rivers Tiroler, Achen, and Prien from the south. There are towns located near the lake for the better and close explorations- the vibrant town of Prier am Chiemsee 5 kilometers away and Bernau am  Chiemsee, both falling on the Munich-Salzberg rail line. The beautiful location of this place makes it one of the most attractive tourist destinations in Germany.

The weather around the lake and the islands is pretty good around the year, which is same as that of the state. Since the state falls in the continental climate zone, it all ranges from warm summer air to spine-chilling winters along with spring and autumn in between. Since the weather is nice and attractive, the lake is enjoyed at any time of the season as each season adds its magic around the lake. The sudden downpour around the lake makes the surroundings filled with freshly smell and green beauty canvassing all around.

In the summers which long between May and September, mild warm air covers the area making it humid, but the air near the lake is quite cool and refreshing with crystal clear skies and The Alps view in the background. It makes a perfect weather for enjoying the water sports on the lake and visiting the islands for a small picnic in the meadows or sight-seeing. The same can be done in winters if you don’t mind the temperature and enjoy the serene lake view. Therefore, an ideal time to visit the place would be in the summers, especially for people coming from warmer and tropical areas. Other favorable season would be during the spring season when the weather is really pleasant. Most of the tourists prefer these two seasons to visit this amazing place.

The Chiemsee Lake was formed identically to numerous pre-alpine lakes in the area at the extreme of the final ice-age which occurred about 10,000 years ago from a hollow carved out by a Zungenbencken. A Zungenbencken (German origin) or a tongue basin is a chunk of a succession of ice-age landforms (also called glacial series). It became hollow and left out by ice mass as the Gletzscherzunge (nose of the glacier) sinks. It initially was filled with melt water forming a proglacial lake. The lake may later be covered with the surface water from streams and rivers or precipitation. The lake was entirely retreated producing a glacial Piedmont lake.

Initially, the lake covered the area of nearly 240 square kilometer which is about three times more the existing coverage. In the 10,000 years, the area came down shrinking to about 20 square kilometers. The water level fell about a meter before the year of 1904. Thus, the dry land which was a vast area was reclaimed. The international Ramsar convention founded for the preservation of ecologically important wetlands has Chiemsee in its protection list. As of 1954, the mudflats of Delta were forming where Tiroler Ache was gushing in the lake and protected the retreats for endangered species of waterfowl and wader. This is truly a phenomenal natural beauty and this is what attracts people from across the globe to visit the lake.

Surroundings:

The lake is surrounded by the beautiful villages and picturesque islands making the lake and the line of sight in front of you a blissful tourist spot. Prien am Chiemsee are the biggest villages between the rail link of Munich, and the opening of Herrenchiemsee. Castle is open to visitors and is becoming famous in the way of reaching towards the lake.  There are three famous islands on the lake in the area of which Herreninssel is the largest one. It has the palace which was made by King Ludwig II in 1878 and gave it the name-Herrenchiemsee which was fated to remain incomplete but was the idea of being the exact copy of Palace of Versailles. Visitors can see the built rooms and all summer, the tour of the palace and vast grounds are administered.

Frauenchiemsee is the smaller island comparatively having beautiful monasteries to view and houses a Benedictine nunnery. The other islands Fraueninel( ladies’ island) and uninhabited Krautinsel island which is also known for its cabbage production in Middle ages, is gaining its name of Cabbage Island. There are also little islands in the area which are – Schalch and two unnamed islands around.

Traveling the area :

The area is approximately 90 kilometers away from Munich in the southeast, and one can reach through A8 from Munich to Salzburg exiting to Bernau.

You can visit the area from Munich by arriving in Munich trough airport and getting on in the train and coming to Prien am Chiemsee station which is between Munich-Salzburg railway line. There are intercity trains which are stopping at Prien station as well as slower trains named Meridian trains. It will take about one hour to reach here. You can get into the narrow gauge Chiemseebahn (an autobahn) to boat pier, but it runs only in summers. The path alongside Chienseebahn allows the walking route to the boat pier.

There are also ferries, rowboats, pedal boats and other boats available in the area for traveling to various islands and exploring the Bavarian sea. Take a boat ride and enjoy the amazing experience with your wife and kids. You would definitely cherish this experience for your life.

The Bavarian Sea is the largest and most beautiful lake in Bavaria, which is the best place to swim and sunbathe at numerous locations around the lake. You can even go for a cruise on row boats and pedal boats. There are various other activities to do around the lake such as canoeing and kayaking tours, resting in the beach bars and enjoying the lakeside views, sail boarding, strolling or biking on the riverside path for the excellent views of the lake. People from diverse parts of the world visit the lake every year to enjoy the amazing view this place has on offer.

Besides, many people from the Munich city come here and claim for peace, tranquility and relaxation. The place acts as the de-stressing therapy taking us away from the city chaos. One can also visit the mesmerizing islands and the beauty of the Alps breathing the fresh and lively Alpine air. You can enjoy the tides which are just like the sea tides with your friends and family. The four major islands have its intriguing history for you to catch up and view beautifully designed palaces and churches. Also, the Upper Bavarian Alps is a great place for hiking, tours of the mountain, camping, cycling, etc. The leisure activities in the villages engage you with their hospitality making itself a favorite destination for the people. Therefore, visiting this place with your family and friends is definitely a great experience you would cherish in your whole life.

Chiemsee — Bavaria’s Lake Of Reflections And Dreams

While you might naturally assume that the largest, and arguably the most beautiful, of Bavaria ‘s lakes offers countless opportunities for quiet reflection, Chiemsee also offers reflections of a more dramatic sort.

Less than an hour’s 21st-century drive south of Munich , Chiemsee in the late 19th century was considerably more difficult to reach. That didn’t stop it from being a gathering place of royalty!

Its haunting, dreamy atmosphere made Chiemsee irresistible to Germany’s ultimate dreamer, King Ludwig II. Here he began building his third and final Castle, Schloss Herrenchiemsee , on Herreninsel , the larger of the lake’s two most prominent islands.

Schloss Herrenchiemsee ( Neues Schloss ) was meant to replicate the Palace of Versailles, establishing for all time the glory of the German throne. King Ludwig, however, met a mysterious and untimely end in 1886. Except for its central portion, Herrenchiemsee Schloss was never finished. That, however, was enough!

Within the central section of the Castle is the astonishing Great Hall of Mirrors, with seventeen mirrored doors reflecting more than thirty crystal chandeliers and forty-four golden candelabra. As one who never tired of his own legend, Ludwig had the events of his life immortalized on the room’s painted ceiling. He also had installed in the Palace’s dining room a unique self-setting table. Between courses it descended to a room where servants waited to replace empty dishes with full ones!

Would you prefer the quieter kind of reflection during your visit to Chiemsee? Take the ferry from the resort town of Prien not to Herreninsel , but to its smaller neighbor Fraueninsel (The Ladies’ Island), the site of the oldest abbey in Germany. Duke Tassilo III founded a Benedictine Convent here in 782, making it the oldest abbey in Germany.

While the convent has been transformed into a college and is not open to the public, the church is a fantastic combination of architectural styles including Romanesque, Baroque, and Gothic. You may never see anything to compare with its 8-sided onion domed tower!

Treat yourself to a walk around the island (you can see the whole thing in about half an hour!) along its picturesque lanes overflowing with flowers. Sample the local culinary highlight, Raucherfisch , at the island’s small fishing village.

In late May the village celebrates its yearly Corpus Christi Festival, when all the fishing boats are garlanded with flowers and fishermen wear traditional Bavarian garb. The boats circle the island and stop at each of its corners so that the Gospel can be sung. No matter when you visit, don’t leave the island without some of the wonderful fruit liqueurs and marzipan made by the Benedictine sisters!

Chiemsee’s western shore resort of Prien, in addition to being the jumping-off point for the two islands, is a climactic health resort in its own right. Here you can undergo treatment for a variety of conditions.

Prien is also a great family resort, with the Prienavera pool complex right on the lakeshore. Turn the kids loose to ride the white-water canal or the water slides while you unwind in the whirlpool, or tone up with a water aerobics class!

Just south of Chiemsee, you’ll find the central Alps with their breathtaking views. Both novice and expert climbers will be able to manage Kampenwand , as the ridge crossing between the mountain’s main and western peaks has only a few spots classified as Grade II to Grade IV. The tallest peak in the vicinity of Chiemsee, however, is 1,963-meter or 6,640-foot Sonntagshorn , on Bavaria’s border with Austria.

Last but not least, Chiemsee, of course, offers all the expected water sports and sailing opportunities. After treating yourself to your favorites among them, it’s time to lie back in your own comfortable bed, and surrender to the dream that is Chiemsee! ;-)

From which place do I take a boat for the palace? Any timetable available? The one I found on http://www.chiemsee-schifffahrt.de is in German. Anyone has a timetable in english?

> From which place do I take a boat for the palace?

Various options, the map at top of page.

http://www.chiemsee-schifffahrt.de/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=77&Itemid=144

If using public transport the classical route is:

train to Prien station

bus/steam train from Prien station to Stock harbour

boat from Stock harbour to Herreninsel island

> The one I found on http://www.chiemsee-schifffahrt.de is in German. Anyone has a timetable in english?

http://www.chiemsee-schifffahrt.de/images/stories/pdf/02%20sfp%202009%20tabelle.pdf

Actually one phrase is translated on this timetable.

weiter alle 30 Minuten = every 30 minutes

What else you want to have translated?

ab/an = dep/arr

DB timetable (in English)

http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

From: Prien

To: Herreninsel

Thanks for you response.

DB timetable (just the boats)

From: Stock Hafen, Prien

Tickets are available only at the cash-desks in the visitors' centre near the landing stage.

You can visit the palace only as a part of a guided tour.

Sorry, but this site seems to be for trains.

This timetable has also the boats on lake Chiemsee.

It will show SCHIFF (= German for ship) in the products column for this connection.

Thanks a lot. It's all clear to me now.

Two more questions

This ticket can be bought on the journey day from the harbour itself?

> This ticket can be bought on the journey day from the harbour itself?

Yes. I doubt there is any other way at all.

You have been very helpful. Thanks a lot for solving all my queries.

If you have the time, you might also consider visiting the convent on the island nextdoor.

Thanks but could you give me more details about the convent?

Things to do in Chiemsee, Bavaria Germany

Updated: Oct 22, 2023

The Chiemsee lake is also known as Bavarian See and it’s the largest lake in Bavaria. The Lake is located near Rosenheim in the area of Chiemgau. The Lake is surrounded by the Chiemgau range of mountains.

The Chiemgau is famous for its creational activities. It’s not only an ideal spot for summer activities but you can also enjoy the perfect winter activities like Skiing in the area.

bavaria yachts chiemsee

The Chiemsee has three famous Islands where you can do different activities. We visited Chiemsee in the summer and enjoyed a very relaxing day by doing different activities.

How to reach Chiemsee:

The Chiemsee is super convenient to reach by Train. It’s around 1 hour from Munich, and you can use different regional trains to get there. There are two main train stations Prien a Chiemsee and Bernau a Chiemsee.

bavaria yachts chiemsee

The Prien a Chiemsee has the most tourists as compared to Berbau a Chiemsee. We have been to both spots. There are also many other spots near the lake that are less touristy, and you can go there and enjoy if you are interested in enjoying some alone time.

How to spend a day in Chiemsee:

We were coming from Munich, and we wanted to spend some relaxing time in a less touristy spot, so we took off at the Train Station of Berbau a Chiemsee. The Dock is around 2 KM from the train station, and we walked to the lake.

There are still lots of people, and you can do lots of water activities there. There are also a few restaurants from where we had lunch. We also enjoyed sitting and swimming in the lake.

1. Boating in Chiemsee:

There are two boating companies, we rented a boat for 2 hours to explore the Lake. The total cost for two hours was Euro 30. We highly suggest you rent a boat as it’s a very relaxing experience and you can go where ever you want.

Whenever you rent a boat, don’t forget to mark a departure point on your maps as it helps you return to the right point.

You can also book a cruise trip from Berau, but it’s not frequent as it’s from Chiemsee a Prien. So we decided to go back to Chiem a Prein. It’s just one station away. We took a train, and we took off at the Train station of Prien a Chiemsee.

2. Exploring the Town:

We also explored the town around Chiemsee. The town has beautiful architecture and old buildings and decorated houses. There are also many restaurants and cafes where you can enjoy some good Bavarian food.

3. Traditional Train Ride to the Lake from the Train station:

The Dock is around 2 km away from the Train Station. You can either walk or take a traditional Steam train. Instead of walking to Chiemsee, we took a traditional Steam train from the Chiemsee Prien train station.

bavaria yachts chiemsee

You don’t need to buy a ticket in advance. You can buy a ticket from the Info office near the train departure point. The ticket is around 2 Euros per person, and we also bought Lake Cruise tickets from there.

The train took us through the town, and it really felt as if we were back in the industrial age. It was around a 10-15 minute journey, and we had reached the Lake.

4. Cruising in the Chiemsee:

We got the tickets for the round trip to the lake covering the visit of the three Islands of the Lake. The Cruising boat was big, with a huge capacity to sit inside and outside. The weather was sunny and ideal for the outdoor cruise.

bavaria yachts chiemsee

We enjoyed a lovely breeze, and when we were returning, we also experienced the lovely sunset on the Cruise.

You need to check the timing of the last cruise from that Island if you are planning to explore the other Islands. Usually, there are long waiting lines for the traveler going back to Prien.

5. Herreninsel (Men Island):

The main Island of the Lake is Herreininsel, also known as Men’s Island. The Island is huge, but you can still walk and enjoy the scenic beauty and lush green nature. We literally felt that we were in a rainforest.

There are also a few restaurants on the island where you can enjoy a nice Bavarian Lunch.

6. Herrenchiemsee Palace:

The main highlight of the Herreninsel is Herrenchiemsee Palace. It’s a Baroque-style castle, and according to traditions, the abbey of Herrenchiemsee was established in 765 AD. In the 19th century, the Palace was constructed by King Ludwig II as a replica of the Palace of Versailles.

The palace garden has fountains and a copy of Latona Fountain, similar to Versailles. The palace is a masterpiece of beauty and elegance.

7. Horse Cart Ride in Herreninsel:

The Castle is around 15-minute walk, but you can also take a Horse Ride and reach the Palace like a Royals. The price of the Cart Ride is Euro 3.5 one way, and it drops you right in front of the Palace.

8. Fraueninsel (Women Island):

After exploring the HerrenInsel, we got the Cruising boat from there to Freueninsel, also known as Women Island. The Island is relatively small, and there are no cars there.

bavaria yachts chiemsee

You can explore the tiny island on foot. You only need like 30 minutes to explore the Island. The town is also famous for its Christmas market.

The main attraction on the island is the Benedictine nun’s convent. The Island has only 300 inhabitants, and there are few restaurants where you can enjoy lunch.

9. The Cabagge Island (Krautinsel):

The Krautinsel, known as Cabbage Island, is small and not populated. As we didn’t have much time, we decided to skip our Visit to Krautinsel.

Ending Note:

There are lots of other activities which you can do like Kayaking, boating and sailing a boat. Even in summer, the water is a bit cold, but you can swim when the weather is more than 25 degrees You can also cycle along the lake and explore different spots on the lake.

The area is also very touristy if you want to spend some days near the Lake you can also find lovely accommodation.

Hi, I'm Hannah.I was on your blog now. You have interesting photos and you write very nicely and interestingly. I am a writer, journalist and researcher. I will be glad if you answer. All the best, Hannah

Thanks a lot and sorry for the reply as we didn’t get the notifications.

View from Chieming over the Chiemsee

Lake Chiemsee lies at the foot of the Chiemgau Alps. As the largest lake in Bavaria, it is also known as the “Bavarian Sea”. Idyllic bathing bays and extensive bathing beaches, beer gardens and fish huts, hiking, cycling and SUP - Lake Chiemsee is enormously diverse. Water sports enthusiasts will find optimal conditions in the Chiemgau-Area to pursue their hobby in the most beautiful surroundings. For environmental reasons, motor boats are only allowed to islanders, fishermen and rescue services.

Herreninsel and Fraueninsel

In the footsteps of King Ludwig II and the Bavarian Duke Tassilo

In addition to the magnificent palace of King Ludwig II  and the former Augustinian Canons' monastery, the historic parks  with the Fama, Fortuna and Latona fountains await on the island of Herrenchiemsee . The small, romantic Fraueninsel is only ten minutes away by boat. The Bavarian Duke Tassilo built a monastery here around 700, in which Benedictine nuns still live today. Among other things, they manage the monastery garden and produce the popular marzipan that is available in the monastery shop. The tower of the monastery, the octagonal campanile, is a landmark of  the Chiemgau-Are a and one of the most photographed objects in the region.

Vacation at Lake Chiemsee

Lake Chiemsee is also enchanting from the shore - with a walk directly next to the water or when cycling around the lake. The tour is around 60 kilometers long. The best time to do this is in the early morning and late afternoon. There are numerous options for stopping off right by the water. The silhouette of the Chiemgau Alps is a constant companion.

The Lex Fishery on Fraueninsel island at Lake Chiemsee has been around since 1857. Tassilo and Florian Lex are the sixth generation to carry on their family’s fishing tradition. We accompanied the twins, their father and grandfather for a day – from catch to sale. Text: Ornella Rosaria Cosenza, Photos: Klaus Fengler

Lex Fishery at Lake Chiemsee

Ten times. That’s how often a fish passes through the hands of the fishermen at 'Chiemseefischerei Lex' before it is sold. Genuine handicraft. A professional passion. The Lex family fishery is a traditional and family-run business: the family has been managing Lake Chiemsee since 1857, processing and selling fish of the highest quality.

The grounds on the Fraueninsel island, where the family home stands, have been there for 400 years. And always inhabited by fishermen. Today, the twins Tassilo and Florian Lex, both in their early 30s, run the fishery together with their father, a business now in its sixth generation. “I consider it a privilege to be able to continue this tradition,” says Florian Lex.

The Lex family has been fishing since 1857; today, it’s a business in its sixth generation. Florian, father Thomas, Tassilo and grandpa Holmer (from left to right) are passionate fishermen

„The Lake is our Office“

Fishing is a traditional profession where work begins in the early hours of the morning. Very early. It’s July, 4.30 a.m. Fraueninsel, north shore. All is at peace and fast asleep. Only the fishermen are starting their work. Tassilo Lex and his father cast off together to empty the fishing nets.

I wonder how many whitefish are going into the nets today? You never know for sure beforehand. Other fishing boats can be seen in the distance. “The lake is our office. And the nice thing is: every day here is different,” says Tassilo.

Father and son drive out onto the lake for about 30 minutes. A streak of orange light appears on the horizon. Thomas stops at a buoy, the first fishing net is attached to it. “There is a number on the canisters, and the other fishermen have to keep their distance. But, other than that, you can put your nets wherever you want,” Thomas explains.

In the morning, at 4.30 a.m., Tassilo and Thomas set off. It is still dark ...

... but the morning sun is not far away.

Sustainable and Local Fisheries

Tassilo begins to pull the net out of the water. Little by little, the silvery shimmering Chiemsee whitefish come to light. He gently pulls them out of the nets. The fish are placed in a box where they are repeatedly covered with ice.

Only fish of a certain age and size go into the net. As a result, the fishery and its work remain sustainable. The decisive factor here is the mesh size. “It’s laid down quite precisely. And in such a way that smaller fish swim through and the fatter ones get stuck,” says Tassilo.

The mesh size of the net is about 37 millimetres. The younger the fish, the smaller its girth. “You don’t want to take out fish that are too young. They should have reproduced at least once or twice. If you were to pull out the young fish as well, the stock would eventually perish.”

„If you were to pull out the young fish as well, the stock would eventually perish.“

There are sixteen professional fishermen at Lake Chiemsee. They all have to abide by strict rules that they set themselves together within the framework of the Chiemsee fishermen’s cooperative – for sustainable fishing that benefits everyone, nature and fishermen alike.

The following applies to all fishermen: The closed seasons during which the fish spawn must be observed. For whitefish, this is the case from around October to January. No fish in winter? “We go out all year round, as the different fish species have different spawning times. You can always catch something,” says Thomas Lex. In winter, it is mainly zander that are fished, with nets that have larger meshes.

In addition to the natural reproduction cycle of fish, the fishermen themselves also add fish to the existing stock. To do this, the spawn is stripped and taken to a hatchery. “This way, no one can eat, cover or wash away the egg during the embryonic phase,” says Thomas Lex. Through this process, between 60 and 130 million whitefish are deployed per year.

To ensure that no fish are caught while too young ...

... the mesh size of the nets is precisely defined

Departed to Return

The morning light is coming through more intensely now, the mountains are turning pink and orange. “The Wilder Kaiser mountain is always lit first,” says Tassilo. He looks out over the lake. Then he starts to tell the story. Of his career, which is, on its own, a way back home.

Fishing has accompanied him for as long as he can remember, but before that, he had to get away from the Fraueninsel, from Lake Chiemsee, to realise from far away: something is missing. “I went to Munich and started studying electrical and civil engineering. But I realised that this is not what I want to do all my life.”

He drove home unhappy. His father suggested that he train to become a fish farmer. “Maybe you’ll enjoy it after all,” he is said to have said to Tassilo at the time. And his father was right. “When I was 25, I truly realised for the first time that it was cool to be in a family business, and so I did my apprenticeship and then my master’s degree.”

Tassilo and Florian are twins, but for Florian, it was clear from the start that he wanted to be a fish farmer. Straight after school, he completed his apprenticeship and went on to work in the family business. “It’s important to me because, otherwise, the craft would die out. The knowledge is thus being passed on. It would be a shame if all that were lost,” he says.

While his father and brother are just returning to shore, it is between 7 and 8 in the morning, with five boxes of whitefish; Florian is already smoking the fish from the previous day, which were salted overnight. They come out of the hot oven all golden-crispy.

Before his training as a fish farmer, Tassilo went away to study. That did not make him happy

Three Generations, One Passion

The fact that his grandchildren practise the craft with the same passion as he does makes the grandfather, Holmer Lex, happy: “My great-grandfather was the first Lex fisherman. And now, to see my grandchildren continuing to maintain the family business, that’s the ultimate pleasure” says the 93-year-old.

In Grandfather Lex’s time, some things were quite different. “In the past, you still had to row the fishing boat, there was no echo sounder. You had to remember the places on the lake,” says Tassilo.

And social media didn’t exist back then either. On Instagram, Tassilo and Florian regularly share impressions from their daily fishing life – impressive pictures. Young people, in particular, follow them on this platform, including potential customers. Today, the family also markets the fish online and supplies restaurants in the local area. Florian, in particular, is trying to find new marketing strategies. From catch to sale, however, everything is still done by themselves.

Florian takes the whitefish – while still hot – outside to cool down

Everyone helps with the processing – even Grandpa Lex

From Lake to Hand

On the grounds of the Lex family’s house, the processing of fish takes place in a smaller cottage. Gut, scale, fillet and smoke. Teamwork. Grandpa Lex is still itching to get involved, and so he lends a hand. This is how the four of them work away in white aprons: three generations, fish for fish, silver scales on their hands, plenty of expertise being passed on and, of course, the same passion for the fishing trade.

At noon, the fish is sold in the small shop. The fresh whitefish sandwiches are popular: a freshly smoked fillet of whitefish with creamed horseradish and pepper or the fillet of whitefish, pickled Matjes-style, with crème fraîche and onions. From the lake to your hand, so to speak. It doesn’t get fresher than this.

Be sure to try them: Fresh “Renkensemmeln” (whitefish rolls) straight to your hand at the Lex family’s shop sale on Fraueninsel

... from the Lex family

Fraueninsel A classic that you can’t get enough of. The island is a place steeped in history, it has been inhabited for 3,500 years. One of the oldest buildings in Bavaria is right at home here: the Karolingische Torhalle (Carolingian Gate Hall) dates back to the 8th century chiemsee-alpenland.de

Eggstätt-Hemhofer Seenplatte It is worth visiting the area around Lake Chiemsee. The Eggstätt-Hemhofer lake district northwest of Lake Chiemsee is quiet and idyllic. The best way to explore it is by bike. chiemsee-alpenland.de

Kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding on the lake are activities that Tassilo and Florian also enjoy when they have free time. Insider tip: detour to the small “Krautinsel” island.

Herreninsel For those who like it quiet, the Lex family recommends a tour of “Herreninsel”. You can take a complete walk around, and if you’re lucky, you might even see deer tourismus.prien.de
