G. Curtis “Curt” Whiticar, founder of Whiticar Boat Works, first came to the Stuart, Florida area in 1917 with his parents and two brothers. Addison Whiticar, Curt's father, would hand-line commercial fish during the winter months and make a decent living due to the abundance of fish at that time. Summers were spent fishing in Fortesque, New Jersey. Due to competition from commercial net fishing in the late twenties, Addison started to use his boat more frequently for sport fishing.

Curt built his first boat when he was 14, and by the age of 23, he had designed and built a 33-foot single screw boat called the “Shearwater.” This fishing boat, based on local inlet problems and demanding fishing needs, is the backbone to the design of the modern Whiticar sport fisherman of today. Addison - more fondly known as Capt. Add - had Curt build him a boat shortly afterward in 1938. The “Gannet,” a twin screw 38-footer was Capt. Add's pride and joy.

Due to ever increasing demand for these boats, Curt moved the Mess Hall from Camp Murphy, at what is now Jonathan Dickinson State Park, and reassembled the wood on a slab at its present location in 1947. The first boat built at the new facility in 1954 was the 38 ft “Hobo” – made for Curt's brother, Jack. Powered by a pair of 225 horse power Chrysler engines, it proved to be fast and exceptionally seaworthy.

The 70’ by 90’ building became the foundation from which Whiticar Boat Works evolved. In 1949 Curt hired his brother-in-law, John Dragseth, to help him run the company. The company’s success came as a result of quality repairs and the famous line of custom fishing boats. John Dragseth and Curt Whiticar relied on a trained staff and attention to customer needs for Whiticar Boat Works to become a known destination for the East Coast recreational boater.

Much the same way that a father teaches his son to fish, it was fitting that both John Dragseth and Curt Whiticar had sons join the company and continue the family tradition of excellence in marine service and repair. Sons Jim Dragseth and John Whiticar were at the helm as the recreational boating life style continued to grow and become more demanding.  To maintain the ability to meet the needs of the boating community Whiticar Boat Works established new divisions of the company, including:  Shearwater Marine in 1996; Whiticar Marine North in 2003; Whiticar Yacht Sales in 2004; and Whiticar Custom Boats in 2000.

Whiticar Boat Works has survived and thrived by operating our business with integrity and producing quality work. We like to think that when Curt built the boats Whiticar is known for, he also began building the reputation we uphold today. More About Whiticar Yachts

While the Whiticar family originally moved to Stuart, Florida in 1917 in order to make a living fishing, they ended up staying to build boats. Over a century ago the waters off this part of the Florida coast were so abundantly stocked with marine life that families could make a good income line-fishing from a single, wooden-hulled boat. Yet by the early 1930s, and the emergence of commercial net fishing utilising large trawlers, this was no longer possible. So the Whiticars, led by son G. Curtis Whiticar, decided to try their hand at boatbuilding. Curtis built his first boat aged just 14 years old, and hand-crafted his first 33-foot single screw boat a mere nine years later. In 1938 he built his first vessel for a private client, his brother Addison, and was soon inundated with orders from sportfishermen around Stuart who wanted their own Whiticar yacht.

By 1947 the Whiticar brand was so busy fulfilling orders for their boats that they moved to a new and much larger facility on the banks of the St Lucie River, a location that still serves as the firm’s headquarters to this day. The first vessel to be built at this new boatyard was the 38 foot “Hobo”, a Chrysler-powered sportfishing yacht that proved to be one of the quickest ever seen in that part of the world. In 1949 Curtis asked his brother-in-law, John Dragseth, to help run the company, and to this day it is Curtis and John’s descendants who still own and operate the firm.

By the late 1950s Whiticar was constructing tournament-ready sportfishing yachts up to 90 feet in length that were so well built that some are still in service today. The firm’s boat maintenance services also flourished, with local owners and firms turning to Whiticar for their expertise, work ethic, honesty and attention to detail. These values have endured into the 21st century, making Whiticar a central pillar of the Stuart, Florida boating scene, a community that is rightfully known as the World Capital of Sportfishing.

Down the years Whiticar have kept abreast of changes in the sportfishing world, refining designs and introducing innovations in order to give their boats an edge over the competition. Buyers can expect to find Jack Hopewell tuna towers, cold-molded mahogany strip hulls, teak-lined cockpits, custom fighting chairs, multiple outriggers and more aboard their Whiticar yacht. Their vessels have also won countless fishing tournaments down the decades, including the 2014 Bahamas Billfish Championships and the 2019 Rob Tennille Masonboro Inlet Sportfishing Tournament. Whiticar yachts are so dependable and adaptable that they have even been used by conservation and research bodies such as the Costeau Society and the University of Miami’s School of Marine Science to track migrating marine life.

2016 saw a bold, new venture for Whiticar when they partnered with Garlington Landeweer to create a new line of custom blue-water sportfishing yachts with an updated design and a luxurious finish. The first new yacht to be launched was a 72-foot convertible composite-hull yacht with Whiticar’s recognisable classic lines and a modernized hull bottom.

72 Whiticar

This new template model, a collaborative effort from Whiticar and Garlington Landeweer, is a 72 foot fishing machine. Naval architect Erwin Gerard has provided the engineering expertise required to ensure this vessel is both lightweight and seaworthy, introducing a new and wider beam of more than 20 feet. The yacht makes use of the latest in 3d software and fully composite construction for an improved manufacturing time of only 24 months from order to delivery. This yacht comes with either an open or enclosed cockpit console as well as an impressive tuna tower and an engine plan that can be chosen by the buyer. An incredible four staterooms below deck, each with en suite facilities, means this is the perfect yacht for group fishing expeditions out on the blue waters of the Atlantic and beyond.

56 Whiticar “Picasso”

One of the finest yachts ever built by Whiticar, the “Picasso” is a 56-foot model dating from 2001 that is as artful as the Spanish painter it is named for. The interior spaces designed by Sam Rowell and Ted Black are some of the most lavish ever completed by Whiticar, with varnished teak surfaces all coming from a single tree. Scallop shell handles and solid brass fixtures are used consistently throughout, while ebony inlay accents, backlit mirrors and bevelled edges provide a crisp finish and sedate atmosphere. Yet despite the luxury the “Picasso” is at heart still a sportfishing boat, and features only the very finest equipment for the serious angler and competitive fisherman. A deluxe fighting chair upholstered in white leather and fitted to the deck with a sturdy stainless steel bar crowns the spacious, teak-lined aft deck, while a Jack Hopewell tuna tower will stand up to the fiercest billfish you are ever likely to encounter. No space aboard this vessel goes to waste, with plenty of rod and tackle storage, baitwells and an Eskimo ice box all neatly hidden in side-walls and underneath outdoor seating. A reduced keel depth, narrow chine beam and a pair of Detroit diesel engines ensures that this is a nimble and quick vessel with top speeds of up to 35 knots. A mahogany planked hull is reinforced with Kevlar, epoxy resin and fibreglass cloth for increased integrity out at sea, while stem, chine and keel are crafted from robust laminated fir. With such exquisite design married to unbeatable performance, it is no wonder that this is one of the most prized fishing vessels in the United States.

76 Whiticar “Boomer”

This 76-foot custom model from 2005 is a high performance, tournament-ready fishing yacht with cruising speeds of up to 30 knots that has been fitted with Seakeeper 26 stabilizers for a smooth ride. Helm controls are situated in a raised cockpit for greater visibility, while a lofty tuna tower provides a superb platform for chasing down the world’s largest and feistiest Bluefin Tuna. A spacious, teak-lined aft deck is fitted with a Release Marine fighting chair, plenty of equipment storage and is large enough to land your prize marlins and other pelagic catches. The spacious salon is decked out with leather, L-shaped sofas while the galley boasts a full-sized kitchen. Below deck there is a teak-lined master stateroom with an en-suite bathroom, as well as a roomy guest berth for a total occupancy of 4.

48 Whiticar “Tabasco”

A custom yacht from 1979, the 48 foot “Tabasco” yacht was fully refitted by Whiticar in 2004 to enable this vintage model to stay afloat for decades to come. Powered by twin Cummins common rail engines for top speeds of up to 29 knots, this sportfishing yacht boasts the latest modern equipment such as Furuno radar and autopilot, Bennett trim tabs and Glendinning electronic controls. Sea Lion ll has undergone a complete refit which started in January of 2018. Her refit started at the Willis yard in Stuart, FL for the first two years, concentrating on the structure, major mechanical installations, teak work, external bright work, fairing and paint.

She was moved to Whiticar Boat Yard in June of 2020 until February 2022.  She has continued to be completely outfitted through 2023. March 2023 bottom and running gear repainted.

Sea Lion has two staterooms with a companionway bunk and 2 heads. Sea Lion ll is all Carvel mahogany plank on frame with an exterior fiberglassed bottom and hull.

Many of us will know this famous Whiticar when she was named "SEA LION II" and owned by the owners of Walker Cay in the Bahamas. She spent most of her years fishing out of Montauk, Long Island, Florida and The Bahamas.

She has numerous historic fishing accomplishments from 1000 pound Giant Tunas to big Blue Marlin. Our 37th president, Richard M. Nixon frequently fished aboard her out of Walker Cay. SEA LION II was also part of the famous "Walkers Cay Chronicles". She is one of the smoothest trolling boats, along with her clean trolling wake and soft entry, SEA LION II is a pleasure to fish.

The salon is finished in carpet and features large hull side windows port and starboard. Forward to starboard in the salon is a 24-volt breaker panel and fuel tank gauges. Below this panel is a manual Fireboy pull for the engine room fixed FM200 system. Port and starboard built over cabinetry with access are the standalone air conditioning units. Aft to port is a 240-volt AC breaker panel with voltage meters and remote start for the Northern Lights generator, fire and smoke alarm panel, and a bilge alarm with an illuminated panel. Aft is an icemaker. To starboard is additional cabinetry with an undercounter Edgestar refrigerator. Centerline is the hinged carpeted overlay access panel into the engine room. The forward vee berth has a raised double berth in a fore and aft arrangement. There are synthetic ostrich wrapped headliners with recessed lights and carpeted soles. Forward is a locker into the chain locker hatch. Outboard is raised cabinet storage. To starboard aft is a single toilet and mirror. Entertainment to the vee berth is via a Sony flat screen television and soundbar. 

GUEST STATEROOM

Guest stateroom is to starboard with a single berth in a fore and aft outboard arrangement. There is a hanging locker provided in this cabin and overhead lighting.

To port is a full head with ceramic sink, hard surface countertop, and faucet. There is a mirrored medicine cabinet, glass enclosed shower, and Headhunter toilet

The cockpit is finished with a teak deck and covering boards on top. There is a hinged fish door starboard side aft in the transom. Forward centerline is a double door into the salon. There are two teak overlay steps. The top step is hinged access for fuel valves and the bottom for storage. Port side is a tall hinged freezer locker and the polished stainless steel ladder with teak treads up to the flybridge. A removable tuna tube is on port side. Low in the bulwarks is the water fitting. Centerline is a removable hatch for lazarette access. Starboard side is an additional removable tuna tube and the 50-amp shore power connection. Starboard side is a Kenyon electric barbecue with storage below. On top is a Glendinning docking station. Centerline on a single polished stainless steel mount is a Bluewater Fighting Chair with rocket launcher.

The foredeck is protected by ankle high varnished teak cap rails which extend around both sides to the cockpit. The foredeck is finished in nonskid paint and has polished stainless steel cleats forward centerline, port, and starboard. There is a gasketed and hinged hatch to the chain locker. Chain locker has a Fortress anchor with chain and rope. Aft is the forward house extending up to the flybridge. Both sides of the foredeck extending aft are finished in nonskid paint. On each side of the side decks there are large hull side windows and polished stainless steel outriggers. There is a single cleat midships on each walkway. There are flush LED port and starboard running lights seen in the flybridge hardtop and outriggers on either side. On the port and starboard side decks are diesel fuel fills. On top of the flybridge hardtop is a Furuno open radar array and mounts for the outriggers on either side.

The forward bow bilge is accessed via a carpeted flush hatch. The following gear and equipment is seen in the bow bilge:

The midship/pump room bilge space is accessed by flush bamboo overlay hatches with grab handles. There is a freshwater manifold seen port side and a Headhunter Mach 5 water pump. Aft of the water pump is a small gray water box. Centerline is a 180- gallon water tank. This bilge space is protected by a Rule 2,000-gallon 24-volt DC bilge pump and USS style float switch with high water alarm.

“SEA LION II” has a variable deadrise hull with a single spay rail which extends the full length of the vessel port and starboard sides. Centerline is a 4” wide X 3” high long keel which extends the full hull length. The props are open and exposed. 2½” shafts are run in two water cooled bearing single leg struts.

Keyed and bolted to each shaft are 4-blade 01” X 40” Michigan propellers. Offset of each propeller outboard are semi balanced 32” X 14” rudders. Seen on the transom underside are two 10” X 42” dual ram trim tabs. Bolted to the transom is a 6” X 12” zinc.

On either side of the transom are the underwater exhausts. The transom has a

finished wood varnished and silver decal reading “SEA LION ll" “Walkers”.

Both shafts and struts were removed, inspected, and laser lined and new Duramax cutlass bearings installed. The bronze rudders are equipped with Algonquin rudder ports with Tides dripless seals and Delrin rudder bearings. The trim tabs are custom made with new dual ram Bennett hydraulic actuators.

REFIT HISTORY

SEA LION ll has undergone a complete refit which was started in January of 2018. Her refit started at the Willis Marine yard in Stuart, Florida for the first two years concentrating on the structure work, major mechanical installations, teak work, external bright work fairing and paint. The refit continued at the Hinckley Yachts yard in Stuart, Florida and then was finished at Whiticar Boatworks.

WILLIS MARINE – January 8, 2018 to March 18, 2020

● Removed the Cypress keel

● Laminated a new keel with three layers of 3/8 clear fir

● Replaced all keel boats with 316L stainless steel

● Applied three layers of 1208 biaxial glass

● Glassed the bottom with one layer of 1208 biaxial glass

● Bonded and glassed all existing through-hulls

● Applied four layers of 1208 biaxial glass on the stern

● Removed the interior to the bare hull and house structure

● Repaired or replaced all bulkheads below deck

● Coated all of the interior of the hull with three coats of epoxy

● Faired and repaired spray rail

● Re-strip planked the port side of the hull

● Laid two layers of 1208 biaxial glass over the hull sides

● Doubled the air vent intake surface area as per the repowered engine requirements

⮚ Installed water deflection baffles and drains in the air box

⮚ Installed common drain boxes in the hull side, the forward engine room at the waterline

● Epoxy injected the starboard side planking and added butt blocking to the planks

● Increased all the limber drainage hull sides and sleeved

● Moved the forward chain locker bulkhead aft to create a rope locker

● Glass the interior of the rope locker

● Added drains to the rope locker to the bow spray rail

● Installed anchor hanger for a Fortress anchor in the locker

● Created access to the locker through the deck hatch on the bow or through the headboard on the master stateroom bunk

● Replaced all deck beams from the stem to the stern with clear fir all epoxy coated

● Painted all bilges and engine room with Blue Label Awlgrip Matterhorn White

● Installed all new decks for the interior and cockpit with Okoume plywood. The cockpit deck was glassed with layers of 1208 biaxial glass

● Rebuilt the mahogany longitudinals in the lazarette

● Removed all four struts. The strut bases were recessed and reinforced. The struts were reinstalled and laser aligned.

● Built a new rudder shelf with fiberglass over fir

● Inspected and pressure tested the marine exhaust linear 12” mufflers

● Replaced all the salon house glass with ¼” tempered gray light tinted glass

● Built frameless windows. Increased the mating frame to 1½”.

● Removed and filled the trunk cabin windows.

● Rebuilt the port side shear clamp. Beefed up the starboard sheer clamp

● Built the port side mahogany rub rail to match the starboard side

● Repaired and faired the starboard rub rail

● Reskinned the transom with mahogany. Bronze backing plates inserted for hardware

● Rebuilt the tuna door

● Installed new mahogany toe rails.

● All external brightwork is finished in Imron MS600 clear gloss.

● Installed hidden grab rail on bridge sides

● Extended the bridge console to the brow

● Fabricated and installed a finished mahogany helm pod.

Mike, the owner of RowDay’O, was thinking of something very special when he was planning the design of this boat. So he reached out to Hal Whitacre, a well-known Naval Architect. Over the course of many years prior, designing and crafting special vessels, Hal used his technical vision and engineering know-how to draw out this design. Optimum safety in challenging seas, strength but light weight, efficient and to achieve this while focusing on Mike’s special requests. This was not an easy task. Mike, an engineer himself, knew right away he had found the right person for his design. They decided on Aluminum because of the high resistance to corrosion, the strength of this metal, and the light weight product which met their demands for efficiency. Zero speed stability was very important as well and that is were Seakeeper came in. The vessel was designed and then handed off to the team from Yachtsmiths International, located in Dartmouth NS, the winners of the “Expert Achievement Award”. This is an incredible design that can withstand anything you can throw at it. But they did not forget about the importance of interior comforts. They brought in a guru who understood the design, and all we can say is wow! The superior finish is at the highest level. Easily she can accommodate 6 in three staterooms, full beam main salon and galley, beautiful wheel house and an upper bridge with fantastic views.

• This vessel was built inside and out by the expert team from Yachtsmiths International, in Dartmouth NS (winners of the Export Achievement Award) RowdayO displaces per inch of incremental displacement around 7,000 lbs. 5 tons of incremental weight will put her down around an inch and a half. For a lot of reasons, she loves 9.5/10 kts. Get her up to 18-20 knots and she is as smooth as she gets, then max out 22 knots. She doesn’t really start to make a wake till 8 knots. Just click engines in gear with clean hull and you are 5.5/6 knots. Racing sailboats at 600 rpm. Seakeeper stabilization is effective while moving and as well if you are standing still at anchor. When you are whale watching in 3/5 foot chop and the Seakeeper gyro is on, you only go up and down. Everyone else has clients on board their boats being tossed around while on RowDay-O you enjoy a very different experience.

This is all hand built, one room at a time to perfectly fit the wood beautifully into place.
