These Boats Are Really Big, but Barcelona Has the Room

The city has become a hub for billionaires’ superyachts, banking on the strength of the “blue economy.”

BARCELONA, Spain — Launched less than a year ago, the 460-foot-long, eight-deck Solaris is one of the newest of the superyachts that are the floating palaces of the sea. It has a helipad, of course, plus a swimming pool and all the other high-tech amenities required by its Russian billionaire owner, Roman Abramovich .

But on a recent morning in Barcelona, the $600 million Solaris was out of the water, wedged into a dry dock, as workers toiled underneath its light-gray hull. They were fixing its finlike stabilizers, which help steady the massive vessel in rough seas but retract when there are no swells. At the opposite end of the boatyard, another giant, the Sea Rhapsody, was getting a final checkup before being put back into the water.

As the rich have gotten richer during the pandemic, their boats have gotten larger and more expensive — and when these over-the-top superyachts aren’t taking their owners to private holiday spots in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean, they need a place to drop anchor and deal with repairs.

And it is here that Barcelona, whose days as a commercial shipyard faded years ago, sees an economic opportunity.

Barcelona has turned itself into a hub for these luxury vessels, combining a private marina that is investing 20 million euros ($22.7 million) this year to turn itself into the largest port reserved for superyachts in the Mediterranean and maintenance facilities that can hoist behemoths out of the water and then summon a small army to do repairs.

And it doesn’t hurt that Barcelona offers the ships’ crew members downtime in one of the Mediterranean’s biggest tourism destinations.

Attracting billionaire yacht owners is only a small part of Barcelona’s efforts to tap into the “blue economy” of the sea, said Jaume Collboni, the deputy mayor. Barcelona’s port authority recently approved the construction of a new terminal for cruise ships, set to open in 2024. The city is also overhauling the seafront area that was developed for the Summer Olympics of 1992, which Barcelona hosted.

The pandemic was a huge blow for a city that normally welcomes millions of visitors. It showed that “diversification is becoming very important,” Mr. Collboni said. “When tourism dropped down to zero, some parts of the city were heavily affected, and we have needed to find new jobs, also for a less qualified work force.”

At the same time, the spread of the coronavirus gave the world’s billionaires a new excuse for keeping their distance from other people, a role perfectly suited for superyachts.

Worldwide about 5,700 yachts are over 30 meters long (just under 100 feet), and this fleet is set to expand 15 percent by 2025, according to industry projections . At the pinnacle of this market are about 370 megayachts of over 60 meters, whose number has risen 70 percent in the past decade and is forecast to reach 500 in about seven years. Construction yards have been struggling to keep up: The order book for superyachts is full until 2025.

MB92, the company that operates Barcelona’s superyacht maintenance facility, known as a refit yard, has 180 employees, but much of the labor is carried out by about 1,000 subcontractors whose jobs cover a variety of specialties, including painting, carpentry and insulation work. About 40 workshops are scattered around the yard, and during the peak repair seasons of spring and fall the yard can work on about 25 yachts at a time.

The yacht maintenance business has been jumping. MB92, which also owns a smaller yard in La Ciotat, France, reported revenue of €191 million (about $215 million) in 2021, up from €150 million in 2019.

Even if a superyacht is a striking showcase of wealth, owners expect those working for them to keep silent about their assets and whereabouts. When asked about the Sea Rhapsody’s destination once it left the yard, Henk Dreijer, the commercial director of MB92, demurred, suggesting that it was bound for “the Caribbean, but it could also be the Seychelles or somewhere else.”

“We work for people who like to be very discreet,” he added.

In Barcelona, which is led by a left-wing city government , not everybody welcomes the arrival of billionaires and their yachts, whose marinas are typically fenced off from the rest of the city’s waterfront.

“We are bringing in the richest people in the world, but they don’t spend their money in our local neighborhoods, they have yachts that fly the flags of tax havens, and they hire crews who are not from Barcelona,” said Gala Pin, a city lawmaker in Barcelona until 2019.

“We have also allowed private and very opaque companies to squeeze profits from public land and instead fence off access to a port area that should be enjoyed by all the citizens of Barcelona,” she added.

A decade ago, Ms. Pin and other residents held demonstrations to protest the initial project to develop Port Vell, a privately owned marina for luxury yachts. But Ms. Pin now concedes that the yacht business is very firmly anchored in Barcelona. Meanwhile, the city’s dwindling fishing fleet is squeezed into a small enclave, sandwiched between MB92’s yard and the superyacht marina.

Port Vell is in the midst of a major overhaul to become the largest superyacht marina in the Mediterranean. It is jointly owned by QInvest, a Qatari investment firm, and a group of investors led by Vagit Alekperov, the president of the Russian oil company Lukoil. Mr. Alekperov is also a partner in a fund run by Squircle Capital, a private equity firm based in Luxembourg. In 2019, Squircle bought a majority stake in MB92, the shipyard operator.

Even if the owners spend little time in Barcelona, the largest of these yachts have several dozen crew members who make lengthy stays and are “people with salaries that are generally higher than local salaries and money that they have not been spending on board,” said Ignacio Erroz, the director general of Port Vell. He said a PwC study commissioned by his company had estimated that Port Vell contributed €30 million a year to Barcelona’s economy.

Mr. Erroz forecast that Barcelona would continue to grow as a superyacht hub, in large part because “being able to anchor right in the heart of a big city is a major selling point.” But he also anticipated tougher competition.

“I think we will see many more existing ports adapting their infrastructure to welcome this kind of boat,” he said.

BARCELONA BECOMES SUPERYACHT HOTSPOT

If you had walked to Barcelona’s port one morning in 2020, you would have glimpsed one of the most valuable private yachts in existence.

At 180m, Azzam is among the longest private motor yachts in the world. It boasts accommodation for 36 guests and 80 crew, and 4,000 professionals were involved in its six-year build, according to Boat International. It has a golf training room and the chandeliers have been specially designed so they don’t rattle at speed.

Last year, the vessel spent a period moored at Barcelona’s MB92, the world’s leading provider of refit and maintenance services for “superyachts”.

The company works on more than 100 such vessels – generally defined as being at least 40m long – each year. At more than four times that length, Azzam is unique – at least for now.

“When I began working in the industry back in the early 1990s, 50m boats were considered huge,” says Pepe García-Aubert, chief executive of MB92. “The largest would be up to 75m, whereas now that is becoming standard. Increasingly, we are seeing boats of more than 100m.”

Barcelona stands uniquely placed to gain from the world’s swelling fleet of superyachts. The city’s position as the gateway between the Mediterranean and the Caribbean, summer and winter hubs of the yachting season, make it an optimal location to refit and repair.

It is also a natural home port for superyachts exceeding 60m due to the facilities offered by the luxury Marina Port Vell, one of the Mediterranean’s leading marinas.

Some 574 unique yachts entered the Barcelona region at least once between January 2015 to June 2020, according to Superyacht Intelligence. Arrivals of more than 60m increased from 44 in 2015 to 78 in 2019, and some 20 arrivals since 2019 have been more than 90m long.

The trend fits with Spain’s growing reliance on the maritime industry. The Port de Barcelona handled more than €67 billion of foreign trade in 2019, supporting the jobs of 37,000 people.

All in, it accounts for a quarter of all Spain’s maritime foreign trade, a proportion that is likely to increase in tandem with the world’s reliance on e-commerce.

“The data alone shows the importance of the port,” says Mercè Conesa, President of the Port de Barcelona. “But our main contribution to the economy of Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, Andorra and also southern France is to provide infrastructure and services that help importers and exporters to be competitive in global markets – and I think we’ve been successful in doing so.”

Barcelona’s reputation as a favourable place to do business is a major contributor to its emergence as a hub for the wealthy. Some 108,726 HNWIs, defined as having assets of at least US$1 million, live in the city. Of those, 729 are UHNWIs, worth at least US$30 million.

Meanwhile, some 5,000 private jets from around 85 different countries land in Barcelona in a typical year, up from fewer than 4,500 five years ago, according to data from aviation analyst WINGX.

Superyacht arrivals through the port typically include royals, chief executives of the world’s biggest companies and famous entrepreneurs, according to Ignacio Erroz, general manager of Marina Port Vell, which neighbours MB92 and is fast becoming a centre for knowledge and innovation.

“Yachting is seen as a wholesome activity for people who want a family-oriented lifestyle. It offers the possibility of being in a private and controlled environment and choosing your destination without any restrictions,” he says. “This is key: you get the finest and most luxurious experience travelling around the world, at home.”

Inevitably, all this is attracting investment, and in 2019 Squircle Capital, a European alternative investment firm, purchased a controlling stake in MB92.

But while vessels themselves are set to continue to grow, the bigger trends in super- yachting now lie in sustainability, according to García-Aubert.

“There is huge demand to improve on the sustainability of the vessels, from the collection of waste to improving propulsion systems and lighting,” he says. “Every time I see a new build something is improved, and the advances in hydrogen propulsion are particularly exciting.”

With sustainability emerging as a key trend in the superyacht industry, companies across the world are striving to become leaders in the field. “Marina Port Vell will be a key player in implementing a sustainability scheme,” says Ignacio Erroz. “We are committed to being the preferred option for a new generation of shipowners and captains.”

Marina Port Vell is a world-class marina for superyachts perfectly located in the heart of Barcelona. Originally built during the 1992 Olympic Games, it has now assumed a strategic role for the city and provides a major boost to the Catalan coast as one of the first marinas in Spain to specialize in the superyacht sector.

A popular superyacht homeport and the perfect summer destination, set between the cruising grounds of the Western Mediterranean and the Caribbean, Marina Port Vell has in recent years witnessed a major shift in the traditional cruising patterns. Marina Port Vell is the premium Superyacht facility offering over 150 berths and one of the world’s longest quays (440m), which makes it an ideal destination for the mooring of superyachts up to 190m.

Marina Port Vell and Barcelona’s popularity has enabled the showcasing of prolific worldwide industry events at the marina, including the MYBA Charter Show, The Superyacht Show from LYBRA and the Salón Náutico Internacional de Barcelona. It is also the venue of choice for many brands synonymous with quality and excellence such as Maserati, Lamborghini and Aston Martin as well as high-end retailers including Montblanc and Jo Malone.

The Marina is a well-established nautical hub bringing together multiple industry-related companies to offer guests the best services in award winning buildings such as The Gallery, designed by architecture practice, SCOB Architects. A 24-hour serviced space which takes design and lifestyle inspiration from the surrounding superyachts within the marina and the sea.

Marina Port Vell continues to grow in popularity during the summer as the Mediterranean’s leading Superyacht Marina and is well established as a favourite winter home port destination. Run by a team of highly qualified professionals to provide the service levels required for effective running and management for these renowned 70m plus superyachts. In September 2021 a new €20 million investment plan was agreed upon, involving the remodelling of the marina to enhance its capacity and strengthen its specialised ad hoc services for 30m plus vessels, creating 23 new berths for vessels with a length of up to 70m.

Thanks to this new configuration, the marina will boast 55 berths for superyachts, a figure that will increase up to 65 in periods of high occupancy to accommodate the sought after winter berthing demands and the growing popularity of visiting superyachts in high season summer. The plan includes the remodelling of different spaces within the marina, such as; reconfiguring the marina basin, a landscaping project and installation of a new bunkering system. Additionally, a sustainability Master Plan has been introduced to ensure that the marina continues to be a sustainable, safe and innovative infrastructure providing quality services.

Barcelona has established itself as the most important city in the Western Mediterranean. An Iconic and vibrant cosmopolitan city, known for its year-round good weather, culture and gastronomy attracting talent, creativity, and innovation with an offering of an array of world leading activities and attractions within the city and on Marina Port Vells doorstep.

Renowned for its fantastic gastronomic options, Barcelona boasts 30 plus Michelin Star restaurants, and a luxurious first-rate shopping district housing iconic buildings such as  La Pedrera and Casa Batlló. Barcelona also has the unique advantage of being home to the only Superyacht Marina in the Mediterranean located within a city, only a 5-minute walk into the town centre and nearby beaches. A short drive to the stunning Costa Brava or a 2-hour drive to Europe’s prime ski resorts in the Pyrenees mountains makes Barcelona and Marina Port Vell the perfect destination. Spain has seized Russian oligarch’s $140m superyacht in Barcelona, PM says

Spanish prime minister Pedro Sánchez said ‘there will be more’ after the seizure as the west targets Russia over its invasion of Ukraine

  • Russia-Ukraine war: live updates

Spain has temporarily seized a Russian oligarch’s $140m (£108m) yacht in Barcelona, as two sources said the vessel belonged to the head of Russian state conglomerate Rostec, an ally of Russian president Vladimir Putin.

“Today we seized – the technical term is provisionally immobilised – a yacht belonging to one of the principal oligarchs,” Spanish prime minister Pedro Sánchez said on La Sexta television on Monday. “We are talking about a yacht that we estimate is worth $140m.”

“There will be more,” he added, without elaborating. Monitoring site Marine Traffic has said that yachts linked to two other oligarchs who are not yet sanctioned were also docked in Barcelona.

The 85-metre (279ft) superyacht Valerie belongs to Sergei Chemezov, a former KGB officer who heads state conglomerate Rostec, two sources told Reuters.

Sailing under the flag of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, the vessel is registered to Chemezov’s stepdaughter, Anastasia Ignatova, through a the British Virgin Islands company, according to a 2021 article published in the Pandora Papers information leak.

The west has sanctioned Russian billionaires , frozen state assets and cut off much of the Russian corporate sector from the global economy since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on 24 February.

Chemezov was sanctioned by the United States in 2014 and Britain in 2020 over Russia’s annexation of Crimea and was named in sanctions lists this month by the United States and Australia. The US sanctions also targeted Chemezov’s stepdaughter as well as his wife and son.

He was not named in the latest European list of sanctioned Russian figures but the EU imposed measures against him in 2014. A fourth package of EU sanctions against Russia is due to be unveiled in the coming days.

The yacht has been in Barcelona since 9 February, according to Marine Traffic, and was until Monday under repair at Barcelona’s shipyard MB92.

The yacht will remain under detention while Spanish authorities confirm its ownership and whether they feature on any list of sanctions targets, a government source said.

Chemezov told staff in a message shared with Reuters this week that Russia, which describes its actions in Ukraine as a “special military operation” to safeguard domestic security, would emerge “victorious” despite the sanctions.

Although there are several ports in Barcelona, the main yacht port is called Marina Port Vell and is located in the heart of the Barceloneta Area.

Barcelona is a cosmopolitan city and most of the people in restaurants or bars will understand you in English, although the official languages of the city are Catalan and Spanish. Most seasoned yacht crew are familiar with Barcelona due to how busy the port is for superyachts now. but if it is your first time coming here on a yacht, hopefully, this guide will help you plan your time ashore and help make provisioning a bit easier.

Uber does not operates in Barcelona. But taxis are the way to go here. They are very cheap and provide an excellent service. Taxis in Barcelona are very economic as well you can use an app for taxis to book yours. The app is called FREE NOW and can be downloaded in Android or Iphone.

You can have a city tour for 20 EUR for cab, or just go to the other side of the city for less than 10 EUR. Replacing Uber is Cabify, the Spanish version of Uber, but is more expensive than regular taxis. You can download the app and book your Cabify too both in Android or Iphone.

You can purchase a Metro/bus/train ticket for aprox 12 EUR with 10 trips (this ticket is personal) or 1 single bus/metro ride will be 2,10 EUR.

Taxis will cost between 5 EUR to max 20 EUR around the city. Some well-recommended apps to download on your phone when in Barcelona are REBY or MOVO – both offering electric scooter or bikes rental by the minute – this is the ultimate way of visiting the city: fast, fun and cheap!

An Airport ride from the port takes about 30 minutes and with a taxi it would cost 35/40 EUR.

Safety warning for Barcelona yacht crew

We know how a boozy night out can sometimes end in self afflicted tears with crew conflicts and drama. But it’s worth noting how dangerous it can be in the city of Barcelona for yacht crew. Yachties are often targetted by muggers and those looking to make a quick buck from your misguided attention.

Walking home after dark alone should especially be avoided as a lone female near MB92. We have many first-hand accounts of petty and very serious crimes against yacht crew. Violent muggings are common enough, with at least one yacht crew member losing their life to these people in recent years. Please remain cautious in the area and do not make obvious displays of wealth when walking around at night.

The local Barceloneta police station can do little to assist you.

Spain seizes Russian oligarch superyachts in Barcelona and Mallorca

€140 million yacht in Barcelona is owned by close friend of Vladimir Putin

A €140 million superyacht owned by an oligarch friend of Russian leader Vladamir Putin has been seized by authorities in Barcelona.

Another craft has also been impounded in Mallorca.

It’s the first such seizures by Spain since sanctions were imposed against oligarchs in retaliation for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The yacht taken in Barcelona is called Valerie and is owned by Sergei Chemezov, who runs the Russian state-owned defence firm Rostec.

Chemezov – The database “PUTIN'S LIST”

Valerie had been moored in Barcelona since February 9 and sailed under the flag of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

The craft is officially registered to Chemezov’s stepdaughter, Anastasia Ignatova via a British Virgin Islands company.

Speaking to La Sexta TV on Monday, Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, said; “Today we have temporarily immobilized a yacht of one of Russia’s most prominent oligarchs, and there will be more to come.”

A second yacht was impounded in Mallorca this Tuesday morning at Port Adriano.

It’s been named as the Lady Anastasia owned by a Russian millionaire who is involved in the weapons manufacturing industry.

This is the yacht Lady Anastasia, owned by a Russian tycoon, which a Ukrainian sailor tried to sink in Mallorca out of revenge. / YACHT CHARTER FLEET

The craft’s Ukrainian chief engineer was arrested by the Guardia Civil last month after a failed attempt to flood it in revenge for Russia’s invasion of his homeland.

The first seizure on Monday of the Valerie directly hits Sergei Chemezov who is an old colleague of Putin’s from their days of working together for the KGB.

Russia: Maks 2021 International Aviation And Space Salon Opens Near Moscow

Chemezov said last week that Russia would emerge victorious from Western sanctions when he addresed Rostec staff.

“If you glance at Russia’s history, almost all of that history Russia has battled with different sanctions, with enemies which encircled her, and she always came out as the victor,” he told workers..

Sanctions against Chemezov first started in 2014 after Russia annexed Crimea.

The current measures from the EU and the US also take in his wife, son, and stepdaughter.

  • Spain could seize superyachts owned by Russian oligarchs under sanctions against Ukraine invasion
  • Ukrainian sailor arrested for trying to sink luxury yacht owned by Russian arms dealer in Spain’s Mallorca
  • Abramovich yacht sets sail from Barcelona to avoid seizure under sanctions against Russian oligarchs

<p><em>Project Toro's</em> neoclassical exterior is a real head-turner, while its interiors – which apparently include "a huge Neptune Lounge," to quote <em>Super Yacht Times</em> – have been described by the design team as "the definition of serenity and calm."</p> <p>The fully customized beauty, which was sold in 2021 for an undisclosed sum, can comfortably fit 14 guests in its seven staterooms, as well as providing space for 21 crew members. Palm Beach preview: more superyachts point to recovering supply levels in 2024

The Palm Beach International Boat Show (PBIBS) is right around the corner and according to exclusive data from BOATPro , this year is shaping up to be one of the biggest showcases yet. More than 120 superyachts have confirmed their attendance at Palm Harbor Marina this week (21 to 24 March), with several last-minute entries expected in the lead-up to the show. In either case, visitors can expect a more extensive lineup than in 2023, when the industry was hit with supply shortages in the face of heightened demand.

America v Cruz Azul - Torneo Clausura 2024 Liga MX

Former Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has been talking about the possibility of returning to the club as president in the future.

Pique has long been talked about as a potential president of the club but it’s not something he’s thinking about right now.

“If I can help my club... I have been a member of Barcelona since I was little, going to the Camp Nou every Sunday. If I can help in any way, I want to do it. It’s something I feel within me,” he told Sky Sports. “I don’t think now is the time. I’m focused on the Kings League, we are in an expansion process. “You never know in the future, but it could be an option. I never like to close doors for myself. Being president of Barcelona is a big responsibility, but I could have a big impact on the club if I decide to try at some point. In the future I can explore that possibility, but not now.”

Joan Laporta is, of course, the current president and will continue in his role until 2026 when the next set of elections at the club will be held.

Mark Zuckerberg has reportedly gifted himself a $300 million megayacht, dubbed “Launchpad,” ahead of his 40th birthday.

The staggering 387-foot-long vessel was seen floating at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., after arriving at its berth earlier this week, The Sun reported Thursday.

The multi-layered luxury ship’s sleek exterior was designed by Espen Øino International and boasts a steel hull and an aluminum superstructure, according to SuperYacht Times.

Reportedly ranking as the 45th largest yacht in the world, the interiors are just as aesthetically pleasing and reportedly executed by Zuretti Interior Design company, a France-based company specializing in unique and custom yacht design.

The breathtakingly beautiful floater stands out with a navy blue theme matching an American flag perched proudly on its wood-paneled stern.

There are several outdoor areas where the social media maven will be able to relax with his family and the indoor levels feature glass paneling allowing for tons of natural light.

There also appears to be a helipad perfect for whenever the Facebook co-founder wants to travel to his vessel by air.

The Feadship-built yacht, built in 2022, can comfortably fit 24 guests aboard, requires a crew of 48, and is said to cost $30 million a year for upkeep and usage, according to Superyachtfan.com .

Boatworld insiders have been buzzing with speculation that Zuckerberg is the owner of the newly minted mega-cruise ever since it made its main voyage from the Netherlands last week.

The tech titan was spotted touring the Russian-commissioned megayacht in early March, though the impressive boat didn’t arrive stateside until this week due to sanctions, according to The Sun.

The website reported that Zuckerberg purchased the pricey yacht – along with its own $30 million partner boat — most likely as an early 40th birthday present to himself.

The boat reportedly traveled to Florida after being granted special permission to be imported just weeks ahead of Zuckerberg’s birthday on May 14.

Zuckerberg’s yacht is just 30 feet shorter than the length of fellow billionaire Jeff Bezos’ 417-foot megayacht Koru, which the Amazon boss snagged for a whopping $500 million.

Zuckerberg’s rep did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment.
