Owner's Review of the MacGregor 26 Sailboat Models

There is some confusion about all of the different MacGregor 26 models and some controversy about their sailing abilities.

The MacGregor 26 evolved after the Venture 22 and the MacGregor 25, which had been built from 1973 to about 1987. The M25 had a weighted centerboard keel like other trailer able sailboats but featured positive flotation, a low price, easy trailer ability and a comfortable interior with an enclosed head (porta-potty). These features carried forward into M26 models and helped make MacGregor one of the bestselling sailboats.

Differences in MacGregor 26 Models

  • The MacGregor 26D (daggerboard), built from about 1986 to 1990, introduced water ballast to replace the weighted keel. When the water was drained for trailering, the boat weighed only 1650 lbs, making it even more attractive for towing with a regular automobile. The daggerboard, like a keel, helps prevent the boat from being blown sideways but could be lifted up for shoal water and trailering.
  • The MacGregor 26S , 1990 to 1995, replaced the daggerboard with a swing centerboard (which kicks up in an accidental grounding) and made other smaller changes. Together, the 26D and 26S are often called the "classic" MacGregor 26, and sometimes the 26C. Owners of these earlier models tend to refer to them as "the real sailboats" prior to the changes coming with the MacGregor 26X.
  • The MacGregor 26X , 1996 to 2004, marked a major change from the earlier "classic" M26 models by allowing a relatively huge outboard engine that essentially turned the 26X into a powerboat with a mast. Earlier models typically carried outboards as low as 5 or 6 HP (max. 10 HP), but the 26X now took up to 50 HP. For comparison, many thirty-six foot sailboats of this era, displacing more than five times the M's weight, had inboard engines of 25-30 HP. The water ballast could be drained of power, allowing the M26X to come up on a plane like a speedboat. The outboard well had to be moved to the centerline, with twin rudders to each side, and steering changed from tiller to a small powerboat-type steering wheel. The cabin height was increased for greater room inside and the boat is said to sail less well than the earlier 26.
  • The MacGregor 26M (motorsailor), 2005 to present, continued the 26X's trend, now allowing up to a 60 HP outboard. The swing centerboard was replaced with a daggerboard to free up more space below and the second tier of windows was added with standing headroom. The boat is advertised to motor at 24 MPH. In addition to the water ballast, there are 300 lbs of permanent ballast, likely needed for stability with so much windage and the high weight of the engine. At 2550 lbs dry (excluding engine), it now needs stronger vehicle and tow package.

Risks and Precautions

Many traditional sailors joke about MacGregors because of the light fiberglass construction (the hull can "oilcan" flex in places if you push hard against it) and its powerboat characteristics since 1996. Many say it is not a "real sailboat." Most misunderstood, however, is the water ballast that has been a hallmark of all twenty-six models.

The water ballast tank is horizontal and only a foot or so beneath the surface, unlike a vertical ballasted keel or centerboard that extends much deeper. Some have even questioned how water, weighing the same as the water displaced by the boat, can be called ballast at all. The ballast tank has been well engineered, however, and does provide righting moment the same as a keel when the boat heels over, because the weight of water far out from the centerline on the "uphill" side (in the air once heeled over) does pull the boat back down the same as a weighted keel.

This does mean that the boat is more tender, or tippy, initially. A story has been told about a sailor on one edge of the deck who grabbed the mast when the boat heeled, and his own weight pulling on the mast that far above the waterline caused the boat to capsize all the way over. Whether true or not, the story illustrates a common perception of how tender the MacGregor is.

It is true that an M26 with 10 people aboard capsized with two fatalities -- most likely due to uneven distribution of the human weight on the boat.

Safely Sail the Water-Ballast

In normal conditions, however, careful sailors can safely sail the water-ballast M26 by following standard precautions:

  • Reef sails when the wind is blowing.
  • Maintain good balance with crew weight balanced against heeling.
  • Prevent accidental gybes.
  • Keep the ballast tank full and well-sealed.
  • Maintain steerage control at all times.
  • Heave to or take other storm action in high wind or waves.
  • Don't drink and sail.

The larger safety issue is that for many owners, the M26 is a "starter boat" and they may not have the experience or knowledge to avoid possible problems in time. The bottom line is that anyone who goes sailing needs to be fully aware of the limitations of their boat and practice all safety guidelines.

Experience With the MacGregor 26S

Having owned and sailed a 26S extensively for three years, it indeed sails fairly well and lives up to its reputation of being a roomy and easily trailered pocket cruiser. This sailboat can meet most budgetary needs and has room enough for a family of three to cruise for up to a week at a time.

It is a light boat, but with sailing experience and caution, trouble in winds to thirty knots can be easily avoided. The fiberglass is thin but you can avoid running into rocks. Thousands of MacGregor owners have had experiences where they thoroughly enjoyed sailing.

Keep in mind that it's a light boat and always take the precautions listed above. For powerboat owners of the 26X and 26M, the boat should be as safe as any powerboat but do not hit a rock or another boat at 24 MPH.

International Folkboat – a Classic Pocket-cruiser: Used Boat Review

The genetic offspring of the nordic folkboat, this fiberglass 26-footer has plenty of fans..

if 26 sailboat

As keepers of the narrative truths known to non-believers as mere “sea stories,” we sailors are drawn not only to the boats we desire but the stories behind them. Some might go so far as to suggest the story has as much value as the boat itself, and there certainly have been some pretty crummy boats that sold well because of the fiction their builders spun. How many times have you gone to look at a used boat and the owner has whispered seductively, “This boat has a great story behind it?”

Well, if you are drawn to stories (true stories, not marketing pap), like the idea of a tacit connection with blond-haired Scandinavians with names like Ingrid, Sven, and Tord, and can see yourself proudly tooling around in a 1968 Volkswagen Beetle, then the International Folkboat is definitely a boat worth looking into. True, there are many boats that might appeal to the profile described above (some Carl Alberg sloops come to mind), but few have a story that compares to that of the International Folkboat.

Design Details

The drama behind the International Folkboat began even before the boat existed. In 1939, as Hitler pushed the world into World War II, the neutral Swedes optimistically held a yacht design contest. The winning boat was to be put into production as a new popular class of keelboats. It is from that contest that the svelte little micro-cruiser that came to be known as the Nordic Folkboat emerged. Although we’ve not the space to cover some of the juicier details of the Nordic Folkboat’s design origins, even the thumbnail view is compelling. For those interested, Deiter Loibner provides a detailed account of the controversy surrounding the design in his excellent book “The Folkboat Story: From Cult to Classic.”

The designer of the IF Folkboat was Todd Sunden, who until he died in 1999 at the age of 90, was still fighting to establish his claim as the primary designer of the storied Nordic Folkboat, the International Folkboat’s genetic predecessor. No one questions that Sunden drew the lines of the Nordic Folkboat, but whether he deserved credit or payment for later royalties remains under dispute.

According to Loibner, this much is known: In 1941, a committee of judges formed by the Royal Swedish Sailing Association chose the best designs of its international contest for a new keelboat design. Trouble was that the judges couldn’t settle on one design. Instead, the favorite drawings were handed over to Sunden, who was tapped to come up with a new design that incorporated the “best of the best” from the contest.

The result was the Nordic Folkboat, a clinker-built sloop with a reverse transom, a spoon bow, and a low cabin that gave it simple but pretty lines. Its long keel, slack bilges, barn-door rudder, and hefty ballast ratio (just over 50 percent) equipped it for North Sea adventures. The cockpit however—because it was not self-bailing—raised the risk quotient for any offshore ambitions. The 7/8-fractional rig gave it a conservative sail-area displacement ratio of 16.28. The length-to-beam ratio was just under 3.5. The four-foot draft appealed to the shoalwater challenged. Headroom was ideal for those wonderful creatures of Scandinavian folklore: elves.

Simple, relatively inexpensive to build, and reassuring in heavy weather, the boat was a hit in Scandinavia, even among the non-elves. In the post-war era, carried by the same back-to-basics current that swept the Volkswagen Beetle into the 1960s mainstream, the Folkboat dream gradually spread throughout Europe and beyond. In the U.S., a Danish Folkboat-disciple by the name of Sven Svendsen brought the gospel to the U.S. West Coast, more precisely to the San Francisco Bay area. In a rare moment of maritime synchronicity, a boat, a place, and a collective spirit converged just as the 1970s set in.

Out of these contentious beginnings and in the midst of these “interesting times,” the International Folkboat emerged in 1967. Conscious of the folkboat’s growing appeal, Swedish builder Marieholms Bruk contracted Sunden to draw a fiberglass version, and, the boat eventually eclipsed its original in popularity, with 3,400 hulls built when production ended in 1984. From a design perspective, the International Folkboat shares many of the same features as the Nordic Folkboat (see table page 13).

Gone is the clinker hull—a feature that persisted in even the fiberglass Nordic Folkboat that Svendsen pioneered. The reverse transom has been cut short, and a shallow self-draining cockpit replaces the Nordic Folkboat’s deep well. Marieholms also made room for an inboard or an outboard in a well. However, since the well was designed to fit the small British Seagull outboard, it isn’t much help with today’s four-strokes. Most owners close the hole permanently with fiberglass and put an outboard bracket on the stern, but an electric Torqueedo (see page 13) will fit just fine.

Overall, the International Folkboat is a good-looking, wholesome, stiff design that is at its best when the wind kicks up. It is no wonder the Bay Area sailors have

International Folkboat – a Classic Pocket-cruiser: Used Boat Review

acquired a taste for them.

The International Folkboat is well set for single-handed sailing. Although the original boat had mast-mounted halyards, nearly all the boats today have the halyards routed back to winches near the companionway. The mainsheet halyard runs on an aluminum track traversing the back of the cockpit, and the jib sheets lead through a rail-mounted genoa track to winches on the coaming. Early models came with bottom-grinding primary winches, but many are equipped with Lewmar single-speed winches. The mainsheet traveller is a notorious shin-whacker, but it makes for easy sail-handling from the helm.

The cockpit seats are 14.5 inches wide and 65 inches long, too short and narrow for non-elves to nap. Seat backs are 11 inches, too low to offer much back support, but about what you can expect from a boat of this size. Two 16-inch-by-19-inch cockpit lockers aft are not self-draining, so if you want to follow in the footsteps of some Folkboat adventurers, dogging these down will spare you a tedious bailing routine. Four 1.5-inch cockpit drains (exceptional for a boat this size) and a 12-inch bridgedeck reduces the risk of cockpit flooding.

The cockpit is tight for more than three adults, particularly if the wind is up. However, with one other person on board, it is a nice feeling to be wedged back behind the traveler. The cockpit is narrow enough that you can tuck behind the traveller and brace your feet on the leeward coaming or cockpit seat. With the mainsheet close at your side, you can confidently press to windward when others are still at the dock waiting for the whitecaps to ease. Some spray will cross the bow, but most International Folkboats come equipped with a cockpit dodger, a worthwhile investment.

Going forward, the sidedecks are wide, and the foredeck offers plenty of working space. Two aluminum handrails are on either side of the cabin-top. The standard boat did not come with a hawse pipe or bow anchor roller, but many owners have added these features. Although the area at the base of the mast has some nonskid patches, the rest of the cabintop is dangerously smooth. Since the boat’s thin gelcoat wears through with age, many older boats have painted decks, and these boats usually have improved nonskid on the deck and cabintop. The nonskid pattern on the sidedeck and foredeck is adequate, although it is probably worn to the point of being useless on some older boats.

The hardware is well-fastened with through-bolts and backing plates. This was the first 26-footer we’ve seen in a while with 10-inch cleats. Some of the hardware is marinium, an alloy common in the 1970s that is a poor substitute for silicone bronze, but these components are beefy and seem to be holding up on older boats. The deck-stepped, anodized aluminum Proctor masts with swept-back spreaders (7.5 degrees) are holding up as well as can be expected. The mast has sheaves at the base that allow the internal halyards to be routed to the cockpit. Owners or prospective buyers should check spreader tips for corrosion and remove any tape that does nothing but invite further corrosion.

Featuring just 55 inches of headroom, the interior of the International Folkboat is hardly palatial, but it can serve quite well as a weekender, if properly equipped. The range of amenities can vary greatly, and many of the options described here are likely to be absent on a boat that has been stripped down for racing. For sleeping, you have the choice of two long settees that stretch aft from the main cabin and tuck under the cockpit (with 35 inches of clearance), and a 72-inch-long V-berth forward with an 18-inch-by-24-inch hatch overhead. You could bridge the settees to make a double-berth athwartship, as some owners have.

For cooking, some IFs have a convertible galley comprising an alcohol two-burner Origo stove that folds down from a locker over the port settee near the companionway. A filler board “counter” drops in between the stove and the small sink near the mast, effectively forming a fore-and-aft galley. Just forward of the sink is a small hanging locker. Across from the locker is a ridiculously cramped head that is too narrow to be of much use. Many boats have turned this token nod to civility into another locker and put a port-a-potty under the V-berth. Above the settees on either side stretch a row of lockers, fine for storing small lightweight items. For mealtime, a removable table fits into a socket in the main cabin. The table also fits into a similar socket in the cockpit.

A 25-gallon water tank was optional, and some early models had the spigot in the cockpit, which according to an early review in Boating magazine was put there so that the cockpit scuppers could be used as sink drains. Many boats have creative tents fashioned over the cockpit area, which greatly expands the amount of “living space,” such as it is.

Many owners use their boats for weekend or long-solo voyages. Adam Correa sailed his International Folkboat in last year’s Single-handed Transpac Race, and Blondie Hasler’s famous Jester (a modified Nordic Folkboat) crisscrossed the Atlantic many times. Given the limitations of the boat’s smallish interior, those attracted to the Folkboat concept but in need of a little more “cruisability” might want to look into the Contessa 26 or the Cheoy Lee Frisco Flyer—both derivatives of the Nordic Folkboat. The Contessa has made many notable offshore voyages, including circumnavigations by Tania Aebi and Brian Caldwell, both of whom circled the globe while still in their teens.

Performance

One of the most highly praised virtues of the International Folkboat—as well as all its various relatives—is its performance under sail when the wind pipes up. While waves will come aboard offshore, in a stiff bay chop, the high surrounding bulwarks do a good job of keeping the cockpit surprisingly dry. There is no shortage of photos of International Folkboats (and Nordic Folkboats) shrugging off San Francisco’s famous winds with a single-reefed main. In such conditions, the jibsheet is often cross-sheeted and the two-man crew stays fairly high and dry on the windward rail.

The boat we sailed, Grateful Folk , is owned by Stephen McCormack, who uses it mostly for family daysails and local racing. McCormack, with a generous PHRF rating of 316, sailed the boat to first in the pocket-cruising division of the local racing fleet in 2009. Although the interior was a work in progress, the boat, overall, was in good shape given its age. The decks had been painted, the deck hardware was still in good condition, and apart from some minor pitting on the boom, the rig showed nothing worthy of serious concern. The loose-footed, partially battened mainsail and 120-percent genoa were basic cruising sails, typical of a family daysailer. Winds during our test sail on Sarasota Bay in Sarasota, Fla., were about 8-10 knots.

Grateful Folk was due for a bottom job, so we didn’t expect much from it in such light winds, but were pleasantly surprised. The boat did not, of course, accelerate in puffs like a modern fin-keeler, but it reacted positively to prolonged gusts. We were able to hold a steady 4.8 knots to windward, 5.5 knots reaching, and 5.2 knots deep-reaching off the wind. Unlike the Nordic Folkboat, the International Folkboat Class does allow for a spinnaker, although our boat was not equipped with one. In around-the-buoy races, McCormack is content to pole out the jib on downwind legs.

Tacking angles were precisely 45 degrees, although we would surely be able to aim higher in more wind. Three features struck us about the boat under sail. First was the ease with which the boat could be tacked and jibed singlehanded. Frank Costella, whose former boat, Espresso , is featured in John Vigor’s book “Twenty Small Sailboats to Take You Anywhere,” has many fond memories of sailing the boat by himself in a heavy breeze.

“I’d tuck right back there behind the traveller, with the jib cross-sheeted and watch the spray fly,” he said. “We put the windows under only a couple of times, but the cockpit rarely got very wet.”

Selling for about $10,000 on the used-boat market (if you can find them), the International Folkboat has four essential attributes that make for a good value. First, it has a long, mostly glowing history that ensures a loyal, almost cult-like following. Second, there are enough iterations of the class, particularly on the West Coast, that you can race and rally with a community of like-minded owners. Third, it is a very well-built boat for its size, with many features—like a quick-draining cockpit and monocoque hull—that inspire confidence off soundings. Finally, the boat is no longer being produced, so should you decide to resell your boat, you won’t be competing with a new boat market.

At the time it was the only sailboat that met my budgetary needs, had room enough for my family of three to cruise for up to a week at a time, and trailered well to let us explore waters from Maine to Key West. Yes, it's a light boat, but I had a lot of sailing experience and was cautious and never had trouble in winds to 30 knots - and I didn't try anything foolish like taking it offshore. Yes, the fiberglass was thin, but I avoided running into rocks. I took my 3-year-old out on solo daysails and have no regrets. I sold it to a family of four, their first boat, and heard from them a few years later that they'd thoroughly enjoyed tons of sailing. Thousands of other MacGregor owners have had similar experiences."

Make Macgregor

1994 Macgregor 26 S, This is a slick looking boat in or out of the water and it is absolutely fabulous to sail. Easy and very responsive. One of the unique things is the swing center-board making the boat an auto shoal draft vessel. Light to trailer (1650 lbs) and easy to launch. 45 minutes gets rigging/sails ready for water. Only need 1ft of water to launch, with water ballast filled (1200 lbs) you need 2ft. Drop the center-board and you need another 4 feet. Sailing weight is about 2850 lbs.Put it in the water, have a delightful sail, drop the anchor and camp for the night -- even pull it right up to the beach! Or pull into port and plug in with the 120V shore power hookup using the 120V outlets (3) onboard. The main cabin has a pop-up top for a 6 ft. ht mid-cabin. Snap-on-black canvas all around w/screen in front provides privacy. Aft cabin is 6x7 -- amazingly comfortable for sleeping. The bow contains a 5-1/2 ft V berth with a hatch for ventilation. Galley has a two-burner propane stove, under pull-out table seating a cozy 4 & a sink. Has enclosed area (w/swing door & mirror) for a port-a-potty. All-around life-lines with stain-less Bow pulpit and Stern rail. 6 ft self-bailing cockpit w/attached shade/rain cover is great. Stern contains a huge storage area under a lid. Exterior aft has stainless steel swing down ladder.Gear includes 4 sails: Main, Working Jib, Storm Jib, & a 150 Genoa (has been repaired). Powered by 9.9 Mercury - good condition with electric start from a heavy-duty, deep-volt battery recharged via motor or shore power. Engine props have cover to protect rudder. Throttle and gear control are arms in cockpit. All cushions are in good shape, 3 danforth anchors, cover for main, bags for jibs, dock fenders, dock lines, adult life jackets, misc. tools and pieces and parts. Original trailer /w surge brakes & bearing buddies.. Little wear on tires. Systems tested, hull polished, fresh bottom paint (Interlux VC 17 Extra). Ready for water, sailing and FUN ! $8500, 4402270147

1999 26FT. MACGREGOR 26X Motor Sailer Sail Boat 26' Length 2001 50HP Honda Engine (4 Cycle) Honda is best of class motor very reliable, forgiving and low maintenance. - Mainsail and jib in very good condition, lines in good condition, rigging excellent. - Roller furling - Cockpit cushions. - Swing keel - Bathroom and Sink pumps - Clean interior cushions - Porta Potty in excellent condition - Two battery system installed with motor and battery switch - Marine stereo - Marine radio - Nice size compass mounts above steering wheel - Honda Tach - Trailer is original This is a motor sailor, you have redundant propulsion sail and motor, so it is great safe boat for beginners. Great speed if you need to escape pirate capture or return to shore in an emergency (no running out of beer does not qualify as an emergency) you can just start the motor and quickly get there. Make the most of your time weekend sailing and keep everyone happy. While you may feel the inexplicably pleasure of the Sirens' Song on the smooth flat sun baker windless open ocean believe me your crew of Shanghaied family and friends wont share your love of sitting motionless in the baking sun. So when the wind doesn't want to cooperate and mutiny seems unstoppable no need to continue torturing your red faced crew just start the motor ad zip to the nearest shopping location for a little R&R. All around affordable, safest and most practical boat you can ever own.

Now, let’s get into the backbone, the real deal of this discussion. I’m more than ready! Are you?

A Simple Comparison Table

Key differences between hunter 260 and macgregor 26.

Hunter 260 Sailboat

The cost factor never slips our minds whenever we are torn between products.

We want to see our money put to good use.

Hunter 260 knows its way around the waters, has a complete electrical system, and is highly sturdy.

The boat is pricey, ranging between $18,750 and $27,800. Disclaimer: it’s worth every penny!

In contrast, MacGregor 26 has a slightly lower cost. You can get this magnificent asset for as low as $10,900. With this boat, you don’t have to worry about rough winds or thirty knots.

Also Read: Differences Between Sea Ray And Stingray Boats .

If there is one factor that varies among boats is the weight. That said, do you prefer a lightweight or a heavy boat? A Hunter 260 has a higher density, weighing 4420 lbs.

Did you know that a heavy vessel has more stability and the ability to stay put even when strong winds and rough waters come their way? Well, now you do!

On the other hand, MacGregor 26 weighs 2250 lbs. The upside of a light watercraft is that it accelerates at a higher rate. Moreover, it tends to react more effectively to trims, lowering drags.

Size is another point of consideration regarding the boat to choose. A Hunter 260 is more minor in size. But don’t let that fool you; this boat can carry 5,000 lbs of weight, which is more than most can handle.

On the contrary, MacGregor 26 is much larger. The overall length is 25.82 feet, the waterline is 23 feet, and the draft is 5.50 feet. So, be the judge; small-sized or a large boat?

Hunter 260 is a small boat, but its amount of space is remarkable. It has more room in the cabin and the cockpit than MacGregor 26. The boat is a home away from home.

Inside the cabin are a large seat, galley, holding tank, and double bed. Your long vacations are possible aboard this one-of-a-kind vessel. I could go further about how incredibly spacious the Hunter 260 is, but I’m sure you already get the point.

Perhaps you live on one side, and all you need is a watercraft to quickly take you to the other side. And now, you are out of choices and don’t know what to do. I have the perfect solution for you.

MacGregor 26 has excellent speed and can push past 24 knots, which is fast enough to handle a water skier. Regarding speed, there is no argument that the MacGregor gets the job done.

  • Maintenance

MacGregor 26 Sailboat

High maintenance can lead to unnecessary costs that can be too expensive for our budget.

MacGregor 26 has low maintenance, so you don’t need to frequently go back to your pockets after purchasing it.

On the flip side, Hunter 260 comes with high maintenance.

Due to constant cracks that cause water infiltration, you need to fix it with epoxy or glass fiber.

Here comes the good part; the cost of maintenance is low.

Hunter 260 and MacGregor 26 are both quality vessels, but one is a giant step ahead. Can you make a guess?

I take that back; let me fill you in on the details. Hunter 260 has quality written all over it. The trim is epic, accurate fittings, and the deck structure is well thought out. Moreover, there are three opening ports and windows that provide you with excellent ventilation.

Horsepower is determined by the amount of power an engine emits. The horsepower of MacGregor is 50 to 70, much higher than Hunter 260. The more the boat’s horsepower, the quicker it is and the more fuel consumption.

Usually, the HP for Hunter is ten, which means the acceleration is reduced. But the upside of this is that fuel usage is reduced.

Which Boat Should Be Your Pick: Hunter 260 Or MacGregor 26?

You can never go wrong with either of these crafts, and that’s the best part. Plus, now that you have more details about them, you can choose wisely.

Are you going for quality or low cost? That’s the first question you should ask yourself.

If quality concerns you the most, Hunter 260 should be more than enough for you. I recommend you go with the same if you want more interior space to boost your comfort.

Nonetheless, you should put MacGregor 26 on your shortlist if you are looking for a lightweight boat with incredibly high speed.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Any sailor that has had an experience with MacGregor can confirm their spectacular and unforgettable experience with it. This lightweight boat is made of thin fiberglass that prevents you from running into rocks. Also, with care and caution, you can easily handle troublesome winds.

Under power, a MacGregor 26 50-HP motor can run past 20 knots. A 25 HP can go for 12 to 14 knots.

In 2013, when the production of MacGregor 26 boats stopped, it used to go for $35,000.

Currently, MacGregor manufactures yachts and boats in South Florida, providing buyers and sellers with a wide range of services.

Wrapping Up

The Hunter 260 and MacGregor 26 conversation has been a complete blast! Hopefully, you feel the same way. So, which boat has caught your eye?

Hunter 260 is a bit pricey, but the interior space is spacious, and the quality is exceptional with all comforts of home. However, MacGregor 26 has excellent speed, lighter weight, and, better yet, pocket-friendly. Happy cruising, captain!

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

You don’t have to spend a lot to own a seaworthy and sturdy pocket cruiser

If the Balboa 26 had a motto it would echo the original marketing brochures that celebrated the boat’s ability to “go fast, go anywhere.” Designed by Lyle Hess, who in the mid-1970s would become well known for his 28-foot Bristol Channel Cutter design, the Balboa 26 fulfilled a growing demand for an economical cruising boat.

Hess understood utility, which is what the Balboa 26 delivers in spades. It can sail the open sea or gunkhole along coasts, taking advantage of shallow channels and protective coves.  Biographers have noted Hess, a native of landlocked Idaho, designed and built his first boat at age 16 after the family moved to Southern California. It was a 17-foot, hard-chine pocket cruiser designed so that he and his brother, Lee, could sail to Catalina Island.

During World War II, Hess worked as a shipwright in San Pedro, California. There he helped build minesweepers and plywood-hull PT boats for the British Navy.

if 26 sailboat

When the war ended, Hess built fishing boats for the Humbolt Bay Boat Co. before founding his own firm, the L.A. Yacht Yard in Harbor City, California, with partner Roy Barteaux. In those booming post-war years, Hess was building houses with his brother, but he was soon able to devote his full attention to boats, due primarily to the success of the Balboa 20.

Fate stepped in when sailor Larry Pardey selected Hess’ Renegade design for a pocket cruiser he was planning to build and sail around the world with his partner, Lin. Pardey introduced Hess to boatbuilder Richard Arthur of Arthur Marine in Cosa Mesa, California.

Arthur was enamored with the Balboa 20 design and began building them in 1967. Two years later, he followed suit with the Balboa 26. Both models achieved instant success. Arthur described the Balboa 26 as the largest trailerable boat on the market, leading one owner to call it “a trailersailor’s Cadillac.”

The Balboa 26 was built by Arthur Marine from 1969 to 1972. Coastal Recreation took over production into the mid-1970s. A few hulls were customized with a full keel and inboard engine.

First impressions

The Balboa 26 is deceptively small considering it sleeps four, has a full galley, and is capable of sailing open water or coastal shallows. The compact cruiser’s voluminous cabin leaves little walkaround room on deck, but the single lifeline should help keep crew safe when heading to the foredeck. In addition to exuding a rugged appearance, the masthead sloop offers a snug cockpit, midboom traveler, simple sailplan, large fixed portlights, a forehatch, and welcome safety features. Deck hardware is adequate but not abundant or oversized. The deck has a non-skid surface.

The boat might not be considered a classic beauty, but function over form may be enough in this case to interest a cash-strapped couple or small family in buying one.

Construction

The boat benefits from high-quality construction, especially the boats built by Arthur Marine. The hull is made of hand-laid fiberglass. The deck is constructed as a fiberglass sandwich with a marine-plywood core. The rigging is stainless, as are the stanchions and bow pulpit.

What to look for

Several owners put inspection of the foredeck plywood core at the top of their repair lists, but those complaints seem most prevalent among the later boats. The mid-boom fitting for the mainsheet was also cited as a potential site of stress cracks. Deck fittings loosened by wear and age may also need rebedding.

Potential buyers should also check the swing keel, lift cable, hand-crank winch, pivot bolt and other related mechanical parts for wear. Examine the maststep hinge for wear, the mast compression plate for wood rot, and the chainplates for leaks.

if 26 sailboat

This masthead sloop rig is a utilitarian marvel. The hinged mast easily folds down for trailering. The anchor chain stows in a locker. A single lifeline surrounds the deck. The small cockpit with roomy seat lockers features a coaming to keep the crew dry. With tiller steering, the cockpit can comfortably seat four.

The coachroof is shaped to shed waves, supplemented by cockpit drains and foredeck scuppers to keep water out. There’s a hatch just forward of the mast. Wooden grabrails are through-bolted to the cabintop. The sailplan is simple, the mainsail is tamed by midboom sheeting attached to a cabin-top traveler. There isn’t much walkaround room on deck due to the interior volume of the cabin.

The transom features a self-draining well for the outboard engine.

Despite its relatively short length, the boat easily sleeps four—two in the V-berth and two on the port dinette, which converts to a double berth. A fifth sailor can sleep on the settee to starboard. There are storage lockers under all berths.

There’s plenty of natural light below, provided by two large fixed port and one smaller on both port and starboard sides. On the negative end, especially for tall sailors, the cabin headroom is only 5 feet 6 inches. For most sailors, bumping your head is a given.

Entering the cabin, there’s an insulated icebox to port, small stainless sink with manual foot pump, modest counter space and lower cabinets for pots and pans. The dinette separates the galley from the head, which features a small sink. Some boats had only a porta-potti.

The Formica dinette table features a colorful world map, which has become a highlight for the Balboa 26. The V-berth also contains a chain locker. A stove, most often a two-burner, is located to starboard near the bottom of the companionway, followed forward by a settee and hanging locker. The boat carries 20 gallons of fresh water.

At the center of the cabin is a fiberglass housing with wooden cover that conceals the keel board winch. Critics have complained about the placement of this apparatus. The cabin interior has teak bulkheads and teak trim.

The boat has a self-draining motor well that is clear of all rigging. Most Balboa 26 owners chose a transom-mounted, long-shaft outboard engine in the 9- to 12-horsepower range.

The most often heard word about the Balboa 26s sailing characteristics is “stiff.” The 1,200 pounds of lead ballast helps keep it upright and on track. Owners report it is fast and maneuverable, but is prone to weather helm, so paying attention to the tiller is key. Once the keel board is lowered, the boat can sail close hauled, but owners find her a bit slower off the wind. In this position, the keel can emit a noisy rattle at hull speed, which is about 6 knots.

With the keel cranked up, the boat can enter shoal water and allow for coastal exploring and gunkholing.

The Balboa 26 is a trailerable, stoutly-constructed, economical cruising boat ideal for a couple or small family planning to gunkhole or sail the open sea.

Devastation in Gaza as Israel wages war on Hamas

By Kathleen Magramo , Antoinette Radford, Maureen Chowdhury and Elise Hammond , CNN

Aid group confirms 200 tons of food from first ship delivered successfully to northern Gaza

From CNN's Muhammad Darwish and Niamh Kennedy in London

A ship belonging to the Open Arms aid group approaches the shores of Gaza towing a barge with 200 tons of humanitarian aid on March 15.

The nonprofit that organized the first aid boat to Gaza said Tuesday that the boat's cargo of food aid has been delivered to northern Gaza.

The roughly 200 tons of aid was delivered to northern Gaza alongside a World Food Program convoy on Tuesday morning, World Central Kitchen (WCK) said.

Fears are mounting over hunger in northern Gaza after a United Nations-backed report published on Monday warned that  famine could break out any time  from mid-March to May.

WCK is now pushing for Arab nations to band together to create a coalition "to get humanitarian food aid to Gaza immediately through all routes available; land, air and sea."

200 tons of food from an aid boat was delivered to northern Gaza on March 19, and NGO said.

The nonprofit said it has a second boat, named Jennifer, loaded with 240 tons of aid and ready to depart Cyprus. Unfavorable weather conditions have prevented the second boat from leaving the port of Larnaca, WCK said.

Alongside canned food and bulk products, the boat has also been loaded with two forklifts and a crane to assist future aid deliveries to Gaza, according to the NGO.

Remember:  While welcoming the success of the maritime corridor into Gaza, aid agencies and the UN have warned that sea deliveries and airdrops remain  much less effective  methods of delivering aid than over land.

Israeli military sends texts to Palestinians in Gaza offering cash for information on hostages

From CNN’s Abeer Salman

Photographs of some of those taken hostage by Hamas during their recent attacks are seen on October 18, in Tel Aviv, Israel.

The Israel Defense Forces sent text messages to Palestinians in Gaza on Tuesday offering cash in exchange for any information about Israeli hostages.

A CNN journalist in Gaza received the message in Arabic on their phone on Tuesday stating:

"Do you want to end the war? If you have reliable information about the abducted or their abductors. Do not hesitate to contact us and you can receive a valuable cash reward.”

The message had two phone numbers attached to it as well as a link to a website that directs one to another website with the pictures, names and ages of Israeli hostages.

Some background:  Gaza is facing a humanitarian crisis following Israeli bombardment across the enclave, where most of the population is already suffering from  catastrophic levels of hunger , a  UN-backed report said Monday.

Following the Hamas attack on October 7 in Israel last year, the group took Israeli hostages back to Gaza, many of whom are still in Gaza. According to CNN's count last week, a total of 33 of the 130 October 7 hostages are now believed to be dead.

Israeli restrictions on aid to Gaza may amount to war crime of starvation, UN human rights chief says

From CNN's Niamh Kennedy in London

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk addresses a news conference in Geneva, Switzerland, on December 6.

UN human rights chief Volker Turk warned that Israel's sustained restrictions on aid into Gaza may amount to the war crime of starvation.

Just one day after a UN-backed report predicted an "imminent" famine in northern Gaza, Turk pinned the blame squarely on Israel, saying the "situation of hunger, starvation and famine" in Gaza is "a result of Israel’s extensive restrictions on the entry and distribution of humanitarian aid."

"The extent of Israel’s continued restrictions on the entry of aid into Gaza, together with the manner in which it continues to conduct hostilities, may amount to the use of starvation as a method of war, which is a war crime."

Turk also noted that as the occupying power, Israel has the responsibility to ensure and facilitate food and medical provisions as well as assist the work of humanitarian organizations.

Israel has repeatedly  rejected accusations  that it has been preventing aid from entering Gaza through its iron-clad controls at checkpoints. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attempted to shift the blame for limited aid deliveries onto Hamas during a recent interview with CNN, accusing the group of looting supplies.

"Our policy is to not have famine, but to be the entry of humanitarian support as needed, and as much as is needed," Netanyahu told CNN on Sunday.

Turk also reminded Israel on Tuesday of its obligation under international human rights law to ensure civilians in Gaza can access aid "in a safe and dignified manner."

It comes as  a string of violent incidents  have taken place, including allegations of Israel firing at civilians gathered to receive aid deliveries.
