A balancing act of three centuries: construction year 2010 in the style of the 19 th century
A trend-setter beyond the boundaries
200 ft “Panamax” ketch under construction at Baltic Yachts
Supervised by Jens Cornelsen GmbH a sailing
yacht with a very special philosophy
currently comes into existence at the Finnish
shipyard of Baltic Yachts.
This design combines extreme high-technology
materials and building techniques with state of the
art pioneering solutions never seen, not even on
grand prix sailing yachts before. The design of this
“Panamax” ketch, modelled after the 19th-century
classic American pilot cutters and America’s Cup
contenders, marries a plumb bow, long and elegant
bowsprit and traditional shear line with high open
bulwarks and a beautifully sculpted stern. She promises
to be today’s trendsetter and tomorrow’s record
setter. The offices of Dijkstra & Partners (Amsterdam)
and Reichel Pugh Yacht Design (San Diego) have
teamed up to design a massive ketch rig, who’s mast
height has been “Panamaxed” to the extreme limits
of a 62.5 metre “air draft” for clearing the Bridge
of the Americas on the Panama Canal’s Pacific side;
a clearance only guaranteed at low tide!
Reviving the look of the classic plumb-bow
concept the resultant hull form yields a massive
seven metres more waterline for the same length
on deck; potentially two knots more boat speed
than an equivalent spoon or clipper bowed
design of equal length. Beyond the grace of the
profile and the power of the hull form this revival
is now in the minds eye of many other naval
architects.
With a fully ballasted lifting keel (9.5 m to
3.5 m) and low wetted surface areas the ketch’s
other prime features include a lightship displacement
of just 210 tons, a revolutionary retractable
drive-train and advanced power-generating
systems. And if this were not enough, this
family cruising yacht will add 40 tons of
transferable liquid ballast to optimize her
extraordinary performance. The super light -
weight interior, by Rhoades Young Design (UK),
will have a classic style enhanced with select
cherry wood offset by white-painted surfaces.
Jens Cornelsen News 2009 “Saudade” one of the world’s largest carbon sailing yachts Bill Tripps Wally 148 is delivered and proves to be as fast as she looks The largest Wally yacht to be built thus far, “Saudade” made her ‘show stopping’ debut at the 2008 Monaco Yacht Show. Displacing a mere 150 tons this elegant Tripp Design is fabricated in advanced pre-preg carbon composites and is equipped on deck with a full compliment of Harken ‘grand prix’ winches. To meet the globetrotting needs of her very experienced owners, Tripp designed a displacement / length ratio of only 71, and combined this with a fully ballasted lifting keel (6.2 to 4.2 metres). The simple result: speed and plenty of it, at all points of sail and in the lightest of winds. “Saudades” 59,50 meter mast head rig by Hall Spars weighs just under 5 tons and is rigged with PBO standing rigging terminated with titanium end fittings. She carries 836 square meters of sail area, a furling boom and furling jib. Uniquely, her four sets of sweptback spreaders relinquish the need for running backstays which make short handed sail handling a real breeze. Wally Yachts have painstakingly achieved this strict guidelines of the owner’s team. Following the letter of our detailed specification they have provided “Saudade” with the essential systems and accommodations needed for comfortable, far-reaching world cruises. She carries 14 tons of fuel and 6 tons of fresh water with a HEM water maker capable of producing an extra 500 l/h. Additionally Wally performed the arduous task to research and develop noise and vibration controls for the very large engine room. Happily the result is the achievement of very low levels for both. “Saudades” exterior styling is the combined effort of Bill Tripp and Eidsgaard Design who incidentally was also responsible for her immaculate interior. Characterised by her low and aggressive pilothouse, perfectly in balance with her sleek hull lines the helmsman is afforded a commanding view over an otherwise flush teak clad deck. From her expansive ‘shaded’ cockpit one enters the main salon through a wide slid- ing cockpit door. Only several steps down the flowing connection between these two areas presents a real feeling of inside/outside living. This is a concept typical of Wally where there is a strong preference, shared by our clients to flood the interiors with natural light using ceiling hatches and large deckhouse windows. Thanks to our very experienced and repeat clients this project represents the first that Jens Cornelsen GmbH has managed at the Wally Europe (Fano, Italy) facility.
