Shipyard Stories: Inside the Renaissance of Ferretti Group

Written By: Rachel Ingram

Alberto Galassi has a monumental mission on his hands. As CEO of Ferretti Group, the Italian bears the responsibility of not one, but seven, iconic boat brands: Ferretti Yachts, Riva, Pershing, Itama, CRN and Custom Line and Wally.

Ferretti Group CEO Alberto Galassi 1200x800

Credited with leading the renaissance of the group, Galassi has spent the last decade helping the company to re-establish its place on the yachting map while “building some of the most stylish yachts ever made and throwing the best parties”. The secrets to their success? People, passion and Italian power.

Ferretti was established in 1968 by brothers Alessandro and Norberto Ferretti who cut their teeth as agents for American firm Christ Craft. In 1971, the duo launched their primary vessel, a 10 metre wooden motor sailor, followed by their first of many motor yachts ten years later. They became known for their innovative approach to engineering, and in 1989 established a specialist research centre to further enhance their vessels. By the early nineties Ferretti was shipping boats to clients around the world. At the same time, it was winning trophies at both the offshore racing championships, furthering showcasing its engineering prowess on the global stage.

In the late nineties, Ferretti launched an acquisition campaign to bring together selected leading boatbuilders under the umbrella of a ‘group’. Starting with Custom Line in 1996, the business went onto acquire Pershing (1998), CRN (1999), Riva (2000) and Itama (2004). In 2012, Galassi became CEO and led the next phase of development, investing heavily into research and innovation, as well as processes and infrastructure. The group, headquartered in Forli, now has six shipyards across Italy and a portfolio which also includes recently acquired Monaco-based Wally, which joined the Ferretti family in 2019.  “Wally is the pioneer leading the path for the future,” says Galassi. “For anything new, different and ahead of its time, that’s where Wally comes in."

With Wally completing the group, Ferretti’s focus rest firmly on maintaining the legacy of its existing brands while modernising them in line with present day demands and innovations. This, Galassi admits, is the most complex part of his job. “You have to respect the brand and touch it with a soft hand because you cannot make a 180-degree turn after years of tradition and heritage. The complicated thing is to keep evolving while maintaining the iconic symbols, materials or performances of each brand.”

Ferretti Group 1000 1200x800

Riva is perhaps Ferretti’s most recognisable brand – or the “jewel in the crown”, according to Galassi, who has adored the brand since his father bought a Riva in 1974. “You cannot betray the origin and the heritage of Riva. You have to evolve to keep the tradition of the material and the elegance and keep the very sexy style,” he says. “At the same time, Wally has to remain super performing and disruptive, and Pershing must always be a jet fighter. You can't ignore the fact that they are the closest thing to flying with a jet on the sea is to be on the Pershing at 50 knots.”

Bringing seven brands together under one umbrella while maintaining their individuality was another challenge, Galassi admits. His strategy was to recruit dedicated teams for brand. “If you mix them, you're going to have a disaster,” he says. “There's no overlapping but, at the same time, by having the power of the group behind you, you have an industrial advantage in terms of purchasing and developing. How else can you make 50 models in five years?”

Ferretti Group Riva

While each of Ferretti Group’s brands come with historical prestige, Galassi says it’s the people behind them that make them the success they are today. “I'm just the director of an orchestra made up of fantastic players,” he says. “There’s a team of dedicated, committed, hungry, focused, happy and aligned people that make the essence of Ferretti Group. All of the women and men in management positions are entrepreneurs in themselves. They manage their area like it it's their own company. One of the best things I did was hire a lot of young people and give them the freedom to make mistakes.”

Since its early days, Ferretti has been a face of Italian beauty and craftsmanship, working with Italian people, artisans and designers wherever possible. “My friend Domenico Dolce, the founder of Dolce & Gabbana, always tells me: “Alberto, condannati all bellezza: we are condemned to beauty,” Galassi says. “As Italians, it's in our DNA. We grew up being surrounded by beauty for generations. From the artisans to the supplier, to the furniture company, to the fabric company, there’s something more – either you have it, or you don't. We’re Italians, we’re not perfect, but I think we’re beautiful.”

Alberto Galassi 1200x800

This Italian style will remain a foundation of the group as it continues to push the limits of engineering and invest in its future, which includes an increased focus on sustainability – including further investment into carbon fibre and hybrid technology – and continued expansion into security vessels – it’s aim is to become a major provider for Navy, coastguard, police and security forces worldwide. Galassi also wishes to launch a ‘services’ offering.

“I would like to enter what they call ‘the software around the hardware’ and provide services to the owners, like chartering, brokering and mooring. I believe that if you can provide to the owner the perfect package of boat plus services, you will be the number one.” He believes this will disrupt the market and be of value to his clients, who repeatedly tell him that the preciousness of time has been an important learning gained from the pandemic.

Italy was hit hard by the Covid-19 crisis in 2020, but Galassi reacted quickly to introduce health and safety measures and guide the group through the crisis, leading it to flourish rather than flounder in the face of uncertainty. The figures are evidence enough of its perseverance. Between 2019 and 2021, the group presented 23 new series and semi-custom models, and in the first six months of 2021, Ferretti Group revealed revenues of €457 million – 75% of 2020’s entire turnover.

“At the end of the day, a boat is freedom,” Galassi explains as he unveils five world premieres at Cannes Yachting Festival, including the Riva 68’ Diable, Riva 76’ Perseo Super, Pershing 6X, Wally WHY200 and Ferretti Yachts 1000. “It’s your private island.”

Ferretti Yachts History

Ferretti Yachts’ history begins when Norberto Ferretti, driven by his passion for the sea, first persuaded his brother Allessandro to join him in a nautical venture in 1968. The brothers began by selling other companies’ boats, but within three years they had created their first vessel, a 10-meter wooden motor-sailer that was introduced to great acclaim. Dissatisfied with the inherent limitations of sailing vessels, the Ferretti brothers shifted their focus to building motor yachts. The first Ferretti motor-yacht debuted in 1982, cementing the company’s transition into a full-time producer of sport fishing yachts.

In the 1990’s, Ferretti Yachts’ commitment to innovation and research in advanced technologies led to their participation in Offshore competitions. The team won several World Offshore Championships, and Ferretti builders were quick to apply the technological advancements of their winning vessels to the production lines of their motor yachts. Ferretti’s proclivity for incorporating innovative technology in its vessels continues to this day, bolstered and expanded by the many brilliant designers under its banner.

At the same time Ferretti was raising the benchmark for yacht design, the company was expanding and internationalizing the corporation through the well-targeted acquisition of some of the best rated motor yacht companies. 1996 saw the foundation of Ferretti Custom Line S.p.A., moving Ferretti into the production of fiberglass flybridge yachts 28 to 40 meters in length. With the acquisition of several other key companies that decade, the Ferretti Group emerged as one of the top players in both the international market and the sport fisherman craft segment.

The Ferretti Yachts division was officially set up in 2002, as a designer, producer, and marketer of 47′ to 88′ fiberglass flybridge yachts. Today, Ferretti Yachts is thriving as a brand of the Ferretti Group, whose global expansion continues to the present day, as it maintains an active presence at the international level in Europe, USA and America, Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific.

Ferretti Yachts 500 Reviewed

  • By Phil Draper
  • Updated: April 28, 2021

Ferretti Yachts 500

When asked why he liked the desert so much, actor Peter O’Toole’s Lawrence of Arabia character answered, “Because it’s clean.”

I asked myself a similar question and generated much the same answer as to why I like the Ferretti Yachts 500.

The 50-footer’s profile has refined, balanced lines. The beauty is not so much about what’s there as it is about what’s not there.

Yes, all the appropriate features exist: There’s a raked-aft windshield; 136 square feet of flybridge with an aft-deck overhang, a single-seat helm station, a wet bar, booth seating, a table and sun pads; another sun pad on the superstructure forward; and 82 square feet of cockpit with a table and transom sofa. (That table converts to yet another sun pad, and there’s 67 square feet of swim platform.)

What’s missing is visual clutter. Elegance and timelessness are words bandied about too freely these days, but the Ferretti Yachts 500 has a design worthy of both.

The yacht is a creation of Ferretti Group’s strategic team, led by Piero Ferrari—who also just happens to be vice chairman of the automotive “prancing horse” legend that is Ferrari—and the group’s engineering department, with principal creative credits going to Milan, Italy-based Filippo Salvetti for exteriors and general arrangement, as well as La Spezia-based IdeaeItalia for interiors. The Ferretti Yachts 500 and the soon-to-splash Ferretti Yachts 1000 are IdeaeItalia’s first Ferretti projects.

Ferretti Yachts 500

The 500 has two interior-decor options. The version I was aboard had a bright Mediterranean vibe with light oak veneers—one a reconstituted surface with a fine, uniform grain and the other a coarse-grain gray. The other option is darker, warmer and more traditional with walnut.

Headroom varies from 6 feet, 5 inches to 6 feet, 7 inches across the aft deck, galley and salon. The cockpit and galley become like one space when the aft door is open and an adjacent half panel of glass is raised. There’s also a glass panel between the portside galley and part of the salon’s C-shaped sofa, a sensible protection from inevitable splashes. Another sofa is to starboard.

The bridge, also to starboard, is as comfortable as it is practical. A single bolster-cushioned helm seat addresses the console, which aboard this 500 had three Simrad displays: two optional 12-inch screens and one 9-inch monitor. The standard offering is one 9-inch display, plus the shifters/throttles and an optional joystick for docking. An opening window is adjacent to the lower helm.

Ferretti Yachts 500

Seas were lively off Italy’s coast when I got aboard, providing a great opportunity to see how this yacht performs when the going gets tougher. The backdrop shoreline was stunning. Porto Venere—along with neighboring villages Fezzano and Le Grazie; the three nearby islands of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto; and national parkland behind—has had a UNESCO World Heritage site designation for almost 25 years. The area is a worthy rival to the better known Amalfi Coast.

The Ferretti Yachts 500 was light on the helm and turned reasonably tightly. Twin 542 break-horsepower Cummins QSB 6.7 diesels reportedly deliver a top speed of 29 to 30 knots and a comfortable fast cruise around 24 to 25 knots. During runs on different headings and with the Humphree Interceptors set to autotrim mode, I registered just under and just over 30 knots—but only fleetingly. Most of the time, a speed of 27 knots plus a bit was all we could manage in the sloppy sea state.

A fast cruise around 24 knots sees the diesels spinning near 2,750 rpm, at which the total fuel burn is 45 gallons per hour. Allowing for a 10 percent reserve, there should be more than seven hours’ worth of run time, or about 170 nautical miles. Slow things to 1,500 rpm and just under 10 knots, and that same quantity of fuel delivers 325 nautical miles. The 500 I was aboard was a bit below half-load with six people, no tender, 50 percent fuel and virtually no water.

Ferretti Yachts 500

Like every Ferretti I’ve run over the years (and that’s quite a few), the 500 inspired total confidence. No creaking. No squeaking. These smaller Ferrettis are built at the brand’s Northern Italy hometown of Forli, which is around 45 miles to the southeast of Bologna and some 20 miles inland of the country’s east coast.

Belowdecks, the 500 packs in a lot thanks to V-boxes. The diesels are set far aft, virtually on top of the propellers. The standard layout has three staterooms and two showers; a two-stateroom version is available. The trade-off is the starboard-side twin bunk, mostly for more floor space in the forward VIP and much more in its en suite. Alternatively, that twin-bunk area can become a gym.

The 118-square-foot owner’s stateroom has a forward-facing queen berth, a 42-inch TV on the bulkhead, a two-seat sofa to port and windows with portholes. Despite the restricted height above the berth, there’s plenty of headroom where it’s needed: at the foot of the berth and to each side.

Ferretti Yachts 500

A crew cabin is an option with a single berth, head, sink, wet head and air conditioning. This cabin is a little squeezed between the engine room and transom; without the cabin, the space is a lazarette. Hatch access is under the aft-deck sofa’s seat cushion to port.

An optional hydraulic swim platform with 880-pound capacity can accommodate a Williams Turbojet 285 or 325 tender, depending on whether there’s an optional gangway.

The Ferretti Yachts 500′s unsullied lines, admirable performance, and upscale decor and layout should make the yacht a worthy successor to the retired 450 and 550 models that previously defined the entry point of the builder’s motoryacht portfolio. If upcoming models have the same look and feel, then Ferretti Yachts is on a solid heading.

Superyacht influencer interview: ferretti group ceo alberto galassi.

Ferretti Group CEO Alberto Galassi

I’ve interviewed Ferretti Group CEO Alberto Galassi enough to know he’s never, ever boring. And I always relish getting a chance to learn more about the powerful spectrum of Italian yacht brands he’s in charge of as the CEO of Ferretti Group when we sit down to talk at various events around the world.

But this time was a bit different. We hardly talked about boats at all. We talked about his love of music, and art, and his friends, and what makes a great Formula 1 race car driver, and what he does when he needs to get away from the demands of running the Ferretti Group for a little while. He even opened up a bit about his love for playing guitar.

But, as you’ll see in our spirited conversation that happened aboard a brand new Riva 130 Belissima during the recent Monaco Yacht Show, his thoughts on the lifestyle his customers are looking for, and the critical importance of investing in new product R&D, and what gives a brand its power transcend any one specific boat.

Riva 130 Belissima underway

BS: Are you selling boats? Or are you selling the lifestyle?

AG: We are not selling boats! We're selling the lifestyle. Lifestyle goes way beyond the yacht. The owners, they want to enjoy, entertain, be part of a membership club. We make it possible for them to discover the possibility of being free, of privacy, of entertaining on board. The lifestyle we provide includes relationship services, events, membership club, friends. They want to be treated different. They want to enjoy events that the money can’t buy. Not many yacht brands can do lifestyle as well. We can. Actually, that's what we're doing.

BS: I know you’ve had great success with the Riva Lounge concept in Europe. And I was there for the grand opening of the Ferretti Group showroom and Riva Lounge in Ft. Lauderdale last year. Will you be doing more of that sort of thing around the world?

Ferretti Group CEO Alberto Galassi onboard a new Rivs superyacht in Monaco

AG: Si. We’ve already opened up new places such as on Nammos Beach in Mykonos, as well as others in Monaco, Croatia and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. We'll be in Miami soon. We’re building a community that offers something special because our owners want to feel like they belong to something.

BS: Is this strategy part of what makes the brand so powerful?

AG: A brand is like a child. A brand is like a fantastic Formula One driver or talented young football player. The kid has to be talented to play at the top or to rise to the top. But then there's a lot of hard work, and investment. And you need a lot of discipline, to protect from overlapping and making a mess out of things.

BS: Is that because you have all these different yacht brands under the same umbrella?

AG: Look at LVMH ! Look at LVMH! They are the kings. It's like musical notes. You need the seven notes on the pentagram to make good music. The difficult thing is to keep each brand identity separate. They have each their own DNA. They have their own customer base. But we also understand the value of being able to cross-sell between brands. Cross selling is 44% of our sales in the Ferretti Group. They jump from one to the other. They start with displacement yacht and then they go with the faster one. And then they decide that a Riva (he says while opening his arms to indicate the new Riva 130 Belissima) is the brand to have.

It's a superpower we have. And if we keep and retain the members of our club in our club, they can move from A to B, from B to C with the maximum possible freedom from nine meters to 90 meters. We have everything—steel, aluminum, carbon fiber, fiberglass, sailing, outboard, everything.

So I think we have the privilege of being where we are. We built it—a bit by design, a bit by luck. I think because we are surrounded by talented designers and maybe we have a twist of the Italian special touch that makes us look different than others. But at the end of the day, the brand is a duty. It's a discipline. You need to protect it.

Look at what they do at Ferrari . Look at what they do with Hermes . Look at what they do with LVMH. Come on, it's been there for a lifetime. Riva's been there for 180 years, but you have ups and downs. You have to dust the brand and then you have to polish the brand and then you have to make it shine it again. It's an investment, you have to be careful.

The new Riva 130 Belissima is the largest Riva built to date

BS: Then is it all about Riva? What about the other brands?

AG: Riva is…Riva. Riva is…something special. It plays in a different league. But they’re all exciting in their own way.

BS: I see the group has been making big investments in infrastructure as well as branding. Is that right?

AG: Product is the pillar. You need to dress it well. It needs to be stylish and marketed well. But if you stop investing in product development, you will become old very quickly. We are investing, investing, investing, investing. The wealth of this company is driven by the investments that we've done in the past. And thank God we've done it, we will continue doing it.

Riva 130 Bellissima in the Bahamas

BS: The last three years have been marked by historic growth. Where do you see the market heading?

AG: I’ve seen the numbers all I will say is...I’m super happy. What will we do next is the question. I want to invest in services. It's a pillar of our growth that I think is missing. We're doing it. When you are solid, when you build a reputation on what you've done, not on what you're going to do, some opportunities come to you without being expected.

BS: That’s the perfect segway into my next question. Have you met more interesting people in the yacht business compared to your previous business in aviation?

AG: In the previous business I meet a lot of institutional, government, and military people.

BS: Boring, right?

AG: Not boring. But...in this business... I’ve meet people that you don't even think can exist! Everyone from the number one actor in the world, to the number one singer, racing driver in the world. I’ve met business tycoons, kings, sheiks, an obscure unknown kid that you've never heard that made a fortune in far east.

That’s why I always remember the rules of engagement. They are the clients. They are the top of the top in their businesses. We simply try to make them happy as we can.

First Ferretti 860 yacht hits the water

First look: Ferretti Yachts presents 27m Ferretti Yachts 860

Ferretti Yachts has offered a glimpse on board the first unit in its Ferretti Yachts 860 series, which made its debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2022 last week.

The Ferretti Yachts 860 is the third yacht developed in collaboration with Filippo Salvetti, who designed the vessel's exterior, and Ideaeitalia, who created the interior concept. The 26.95 metre flybridge superyacht was launched in June, just eight months after the project was initially announced.

Naval architecture, design and engineering come from the Strategic Product Committee chaired by Piero Ferrari and the Ferretti Group Engineering Department.

The all-Italian design team embodies the “Made in Italy” style for which Ferretti is known, according to the yard. Art-Deco curves and glass fashion plates define her profile, giving her a sporty, yet elegant silhouette.

She was commissioned by an Italian owner who opted for the “Classic” interior package, which revolves around a palette of warm tones, dark colours and striking contrasts. Full-height windows ensure a light and bright interior with uninterrupted vistas from the main saloon and dining area.

Opportunities for al fresco living are found across the yacht, with a large stern area that comprises a cockpit and beach club area which together span 30 square metres. A foredeck lounge covers 11 square metres and is fitted as a lounge with an oversized sofa, reclining seating and optional shading.

For the first time on a Ferretti Yacht, the 860 offers the option of a Jacuzzi on the flybridge. Guests can also make use of a bar, dining area for eight and a hard top which comes in three separate configurations.

Inside, the design team has placed increased focus on comfort and conviviality. New solutions aim to reduce vibrations and noise and a “Just Like Home” design ethos dictates the styling throughout.

The master saloon spans 27 square metres and is adjoined by a galley available in two configurations: open or separated by a partition. In either configuration, the galley can be accessed internally from the main deck or from the exterior.

On the port side, a helical staircase leads down to the lower deck, while a door leads to the semi-raised pilothouse.

Accommodation is provided across four double cabins, all with en suite bathrooms. A full-beam owner’s cabin is located amidships and features ample storage including a walk-in wardrobe, and a generous bathroom.

The first Ferretti Yachts 860 model is fitted with the optional configuration of two MAN V12 engines, delivering provisional speeds of 27 knots cruising, topping out at 32 knots.

The Ferretti Yachts 860 was joined by four other debuts from the Ferretti Group at the Cannes Yachting Festival, including the Custom Line 140 and the Riva 102 Corsaro Super .

Trascending the limits to rediscover the essence

Developing the concept for a new project is, above all, a journey. It is an experience where the only limit is your imagination, on a quest for sensations, for materials, geometries and forms – to express the essence of a style that must be utterly unique, in every aspect. We have not settled for dreaming up an ingenious concept with state-of-the-art technical solutions, increasingly inspired interiors, and living spaces of unprecedented comfort. We pushed ahead, even further, in space and time. Until we were absolutely certain that we had found the new essence of Ferretti Yachts, the quintessence of wellbeing and style.

Beauty, in its purest form, opens our eyes to new visions and new perspectives. The limit of what has been achieved blurs into the idea of what is to come. A unique experience that captures the heart and excites the eye.

"Nothing is worth more than time."

ferretti yacht wikipedia

40,000 hours of concept development. 4,250 hours of naval design. 9,650 hours of prototyping the moulds. Those are the numbers behind a monumental project powered by talent and technology, innovative spirit and artisanal skill. The Ferretti Yachts 1000 is the largest yacht that the yard has yet built. To assure the finest quality and the most sublime detail, we rethought the whole production process, combining cutting-edge technology with the expert craftsmanship and time-honoured know-how of the Ferretti Group master shipwrights. For experience is the key to the attention to detail that a work of true excellence demands. It takes time and patience to make a masterpiece, to let an idea take shape and turn it into the embodiment of a dream. It takes time to make the time that matters most: the moments that you will savour in your new home on the waves.

#WHATISYOURMOOD

Classic–contemporary. Luxury and elegance. The comfort of the finest Italian design.

The idea of creating two different moods springs from the need for empathy in spatial design. Materials and geometries harmoniously meld in a comfortable, welcoming ambience where the owner feels in their element, enjoying life at its most authentic. The colours and textures caress the senses, as cruising the waves becomes a genuine experience to cherish, punctuated by all those enriching little everyday rituals. The classic mood, warm and all-embracing, envelops you in soft, gentle tones. The contemporary mood offers a fresh, modern palette of brighter, bolder hues. Either way, the abiding impression is of an exquisite equilibrium of marble and fabric, glass and wood. To sate the desire for an exclusive sensation, your own private sea to discover every day. The Ferretti Yachts 1000 exudes a new concept in cruising, where the overriding feeling is the sense of being at home.
