This 80-Foot Electric Catamaran Uses a Solar Skin to Help Replenish Its Energy

Sunreef's newest fleet member is living proof that sustainable superyachts can be stylish, too.

The 80 Sunreef Power Eco , which made its official U.S. debut at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show last week, has been outfitted with the Polish yard's innovative green technologies that ensure both outstanding energy efficiency and zero carbon emissions at sea. (The model was actually in the running for the Best of Show award at FLIBS , but lost out to Azimut's Grande 36M .)

Aptly named after the Norse sun goddess, Sól has solar panels seamlessly integrated into her hulls, bimini roof, and superstructure. This ultra-thin "solar skin" includes the industry's most efficient cells and is one of the lightest photovoltaic systems in the world, according to Sunreef. Covering roughly 2,150 square feet, the setup can generate up to 36 kWp from the sun's rays to create a steady supply of clean power on board.

In addition, Sunreef says the cat is equipped with the largest battery bank in the 80-foot class. Even more impressive, the batteries are 30 percent lighter than others on the market. Capable of generating 990 kWh, the system powers all onboard amenities and the two 360 kW electric motors. The batteries also allow Sól to cruise up to 300 nautical miles, with no fumes, noise, or vibration. 

"Given our focus on sustainability broadly, only an electric ‘Eco' boat aligned with our values," the owners said in a recent interview with Sunreef.

Sól isn't short on luxury, either. The custom cruiser was tailored to the owners, with Sunreef's team working with the family to determine the layout, materials, and furnishings. 

"While we have never designed and built a yacht, we have brought our style and ideas from our home and hospitality projects and enjoyed shaping our future marine home," the owners added.

The light and airy living quarters center around a generous main salon with a lounge and wet bar. Elsewhere indoors, four elegant cabins can comfortably sleep up to eight guests. The color palette showcases a range of subtle hues that complement the bold, modern furniture.

Stepping outdoors, the protected aft cockpit is home to an alfresco dining area, lounge, and comfy sunbeds. A few more steps toward the stern, the aft platform houses an array of water toys. At the opposite end, the bow terrace sports an inviting spa pool. To top it off, quite literally, the flybridge is fitted with a C-shaped dining area, a bar, and oversized sun pads.

The owners plan to spend summers in the Northeast and winters in the Bahamas and the Caribbean. Sounds like Sól will get plenty of sun, then.

The 80 Sunreef Power Sól, named after the Norse sun goddess, is an electric luxury catamaran that utilizes Sunreef Yachts’ revolutionary solar power system and state-of-the-art electric propulsion. This exclusive solar yacht, commissioned by an experienced family of yacht owners, combines long private cruises with sustainable luxury charters.

The 80 Sunreef Power Eco Sól features composite-integrated solar panels seamlessly built into the yacht’s hulls, bimini roof, and superstructure, utilizing Sunreef Yachts’ in-house developed green technology. Sunreef Yachts Eco catamarans also feature custom-engineered battery banks with a density of less than 5.2 kg per kWh, making them nearly 30 % lighter than the average systems commonly used in the yachting world.

The luxurious catamaran comprises four cabins and boasts a bespoke design that can comfortably accommodate up to eight guests in the lap of luxury. The interiors of Sòl are imbued with a serene ambiance, accentuated by an abundance of natural light and vibrant finishing materials.

The History of Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade 🚤 The Newport Beach Boat Parade started in 1907 when Italian gondolier John Scarpa took visitors from Pasadena across the bay in a gondola decorated with Japanese lanterns. 🚤 A year later Scarpa along with 8 fellow small boat operators put together the first loosely organized parade all illuminated by the Japanese lanterns. The Ferretti Group , during its annual press conference at its tony in-water showroom along a Fort Lauderdale canal, said it has increased revenues consistently for the last nine years, from 309 million Euros in 2014 to 1.1 billion in its latest fiscal year. “For the first six months, we are way above where we were in 2022,” said Stefano de Vivo, Ferretti’s chief commercial officer.

One of the big growth drivers among the group has been its Wally brand, a cultural icon in yachting but a small custom builder before the Ferretti Group acquired it in 2019. The Italian firm plans to bring Wally’s annual revenues from 2 million euros to 300 million euros in 10 years.

The wally150why is making its American debut at FLIBS, but the company also announced a smaller wally100why that will be launched next year. The wide-bodied series are a departure for Wally and have created copycats among rival builders. “Basically, we’re trying to pack as much volume as possible inside a much shorter boat,” said de Vivo. “What’s happening in Europe and in America is that new regulations are starting to penalize boats as they get longer. The regulations won’t let you get as close to shore in larger boats. We think these shorter lengths are the best solutions.”

Dutch builder Oceanco, responsible for groundbreaking custom yachts like Jeff Bezos’s 417-foot sailing vessel, Koru , announced a new project that features 17 of the world’s leading yacht and residential designers unveiling their versions of an 80-meter (262-foot) yacht for the brand’s new “Simply Custom” lineup. Worried about being known solely for its one-of-a-kind gigayachts, Oceanco’s new program focuses on the smaller category but offers a wide range of styles for owners. It’s the first program of its kind in yachting.

Behind the exteriors, says Oceanco’s Paris Baloumis, is a focus on sustainable propulsion, with each yacht powered by hybrid diesel-electric systems. “This architecture will be the one common thread across all the designs,” he tells Robb Report . “We’re also designing it so that future propulsion technologies, when they become available, can be retrofitted into the design.”

Another bold superyacht concept at FLIBS is the 206-foot Project Stardust from boutique Italian builder Tankoa Yachts. An unusual twist in the design process was that instead of calling on an established yacht design studio to create the lines of its latest project, Tankoa held a competition among lesser-known designers.

For the exterior the company picked Azerbaijan-based Ucal Abbasli, which gave Stardust a towering, arch-like, glass-filled top section with an open, forward-facing observation deck. For the interior, it chose Miami-based Italian designer Giuseppina Arena, who came up with layouts for sleek, light-filled, mostly stark-white spaces.

We thoroughly enjoyed Captain Lindsey. If you can’t hear or understand her, then frankly, you may want to invest in a hearing aid. No loud obnoxious microphone needed, just well thought out historical information regarding Fort Lauderdale, with some funny jokes thrown in for good measure.

Just what we were looking for We have been coming to Ft Lauderdale for decades and have been looking for a sunset cruise to view the magnificent waterways, yachts and homes. We took the 1 1/2 hour cruise. I was impressed with the design and quietness of the battery powered boat. The price was reasonable. Captain Rocco was one of those people who loves their job. He even dropped us off at the 15 Street Fisheries where we had a memorable dinner. A most excellent evening !

Family and pet friendly tour We had a great time on our tour! We opted for a bottle of wine on board and that was really nice to have. Our captain was great at sharing so much information with us about what we were passing by and made a couple of special turns to show us things that interested us specifically. BEST Boat Ride in FL Area

My girl and I booked this boat ride when we went on vacation in the FL area on Aug 19 around 7 pm, wanted to see the sunset. This was the best boat ride we have ever had. Our captain was “Christina”, she shared the town history and showed us all the multi-million dollar homes! Such a fun, safe, relaxing environment, a great way to spend the day! Thank you! We had blast and she also stopped at a nice view to take pictures. Definitely would recommend it!

Danish architect and designer Carl Kai Rand was fixated on the idea that he could build a better boat. He wanted to reinvent the powerboat to incorporate the charm with the feel of the environment in which the boat moves. From fully automatic, seamless transfer of electrical loads (where permitted), to load sharing, load shedding, preferential trips of non-critical equipment to fully mechanical means of transfers and load control. We can provide shore power conversion, emergency power generation, generator cycling and various power management options to suit each individual project. Our in house designers can also design the entire electrical system of a yacht based on the equipment required and the unique characteristics of the yacht. Main electrical panel, distribution panels and required levels of automation and remote controlling are all taken into account during the design phase. Once the design is approved by the vessel owner, the building of the switchboard and distribution panels begins as does the wiring aboard the vessel. Our electronics design teams can provide the navigation, vessel monitoring and control, entertainment and communications packages best suited to the vessel owner’s demands and preferences, and his intended use of the yacht.
