You are sailing the seven seas by yacht - but which is the appropriate saloon to go with it?

Miami. Marking the introduction of the BMW 760Li to the press, BMW Individual presents the concept car 760Li Yachtline, a true masterpiece in automobile construction. With this exceptional interpretation the division of BMW M, founded back in 1992, has once again produced proof of its competence: The concept car 760Li Yachtline, designed by BMW Individual, features a carefully selected combination of exclusive equipment, which gives this car its authentic yachting character.

The 760Li Yachtline enables many BMW 7 Series customers who have a passion for yachting, to show their passion through their choice of car. You are sailing the seven seas by yacht. But which is the appropriate saloon to go with it? BMW Individual answers this question with a most distinctive interpretation of the BMW 760Li.

The interior, in particular, gives the 760Li Yachtline its maritime character: The deco trim in the cockpit and in the rear compartment is made of high-grade mahogany which incorporates maple strips, bestowing the interior an exclusive yachting ambience, further accentuated by the emblems of a compass embroidered on the anthracite floor carpet. It goes without saying that the Merino leather in Champagne colour is included in the all-leather package, as one would expect of a car boasting such a high degree of exclusivity. Due to its natural quality, this leather is smooth and supple, making it a very special experience to sit on the 16-way adjustable comfort seats.

The exterior paint exclusive to the BMW 760Li Yachtline is called 'Night blue metallic'. Illuminated doorsill strips bearing the 'BMW Individual' logo, high-gloss shadowline trim on all chrome-plated parts featured by the 'standard 7 Series model' as well as body-colour roof trims effectively demonstrate that this is a very special 7 Series model. White indicator lights and the BMW Individual 20'' wheels underline the BMW 7 Series' characteristic design and skilfully round off the 760Li Yachtline's exterior look.

As with a yacht, it is the smaller details that contribute to the perfection of an automobile. BMW Individual designers have therefore paid special attention to a host of further details like the harmonious combination of the anthracite floor carpet and the roof lining in Alcantara anthracite. The contrast between light and dark colours is a design cue, which has been continued in the design of the bicoloured steering wheel, which comes in Champagne/Black. And last but not least the humidor, integrated into the front part of the center armrest, shows that very special details are concealed in the BMW Individual 760Li.

In addition to this, customers will be able to order additional extras, as is usual with cars designed by BMW Individual. Further maritime features on offer include a compass integrated into the interior mirror as well as cardan reading lights. Technological highlights are the intercom system as well as the DVD system with two 6.5-inch monitors integrated into the backrests of the front seats. The wide selection of special options is rounded off by worktables and a cooling box with an increased refrigerating capacity, located between the rear-compartment seats. The BMW 7 Series featuring the BMW Individual's Yachtline equipment should be available from 2003.

The price for this exceptional automobile has not yet been confirmed.

I LOVE the individual series cars. A nice way to distinguish your ride. I am a fan of the nautical theme but the thing I'd really like to get the details on is your front phone. It looks like it can charge in the front trey. Is that an after-market modification and if so, then could you provide some details as to who may have done it and do they have an adapter what would work with a Blackberry or iPhone?

About the Car

The BMW E65 is the chassis designation for the fourth generation 7 Series full-size luxury sedan produced by BMW. The E65 was the first BMW chassis series to use different chassis numbers for its several different variants such as the E66/E67/E68, which formed the Long-Wheelbase, BMW High Security and the BMW Hydrogen 7 models respectively. You can find more visual details of the 2002 BMW 760Li Yachtline Concept gallery by scrolling up.

Introduced at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 2001 alongside the BMW E53 X5 4.6is, the BMW E65 7 Series replaced the BMW 7 Series (E38) after production of that model ended in July 2001. In order to produce the E65 7 Series and other future models the BMW plant at Dingolfing was retooled at a cost of approximately €500,000,000.

Upon release the new 7 Series was met with sharp criticism for its controversial looks as well as the steep learning curve presented by the new iDrive system. So unimpressed was the market with the new car that sales of remaining E38 stock increased markedly after the launch. Despite the initial quality problems and customer gripes the E65 7 Series became the best-selling generation of this full-size luxury sedan, further enhanced by a facelift in 2006.

After a 7 year production run the BMW E65 was replaced by the BMW 7 Series (F01) in late 2008.

Initial release

Development for the BMW E65 7 Series began in early 1996, and production specifications were frozen in January 1999. The design of the BMW E65 7 Series was patented 16 November 2000; development ended in mid-2001. The car was first launched in Europe 17 November 2001 and then appeared in US and other markets in the (northern) spring of 2002. Early BMW E65 7 Series models had many problems mainly due to the functionality of the iDrive system and the associated electronics systems. Thus, BMW repurchased a substantial amount of 2002-03 7 Series cars in the U.S., and BMW of North America also extended the factory warranty on 2002-03 BMW E65 7 Series models from the 4-Year/50,000-Mile (80,000 km) coverage to the 6-Year/100,000-Mile (160,000 km) factory warranty. However, UK models were still protected by their original 3-Year/Unlimited-Miles warranty.

Exterior design

Under the direction of Chris Bangle, BMW’s Design Chief at the time, the arrival of the BMW E65 7 Series heralded a new styling era for BMW. The design of the new car contrasted dramatically with the styling on the BMW E38 7 Series. The BMW E65 7 Series’ two-level rear end styling with separate rear fenders for a “bustle-back” boot lid was derisively known as the “Bangle Butt” by critics. In fact, van Hooydonk’s original sketch in 1998 for the BMW E65 was much more of a radical sleek fastback, but the final E65 profile was toned down considerably to a more conventional three-box sedan. Bangle was widely criticised for the radical departure of the styling from the BMW E38 7 Series. He was however supported by the BMW board of directors, who wanted to move BMW’s image into the future. Dan Neil of The Los Angeles Times named the new 7-series one of the ’50 Worst Cars of All Time’, but Bangle argued that BMW’s established design language was exhausted. Despite the initially poor public reception of the two-level rear end, the design was later incorporated by Mercedes-Benz into the design of the W221 generation S-Class in 2006 and also by Hyundai in the fourth-generation Azera.

Dimensionally the E65 7 Series 45mm longer, 38mm wider and 60mm taller than the E38. The wheelbase was increased by 60mm over the outgoing model. Despite these increased dimensions the E65 7 Series is only 15 kg heavier than the E38.

Interior design

The interior of the BMW E65 7 Series features a generous amount of genuine wood trim & was redesigned to address both the driver and passenger, unlike the traditional driver-focussed instrument panel in the BMW E38 7 Series. BMW removed the traditional console mounted gear selector replacing it with a steering-column mounted stalk, in favour of two cup holders. The seats adjustment controls were moved from their traditional place on the side of the seat base to the inside of the raised central console, which several reviewers complained about the unnecessarily complicated nature of the controls. Peeling paint and textured materials are a well documented problem, so BMW addressed this issue by using still higher quality paint in the LCI model.

Compared to the outgoing E38 model, the E65 7 Series has more shoulder room in the front and the rear, while headroom in the rear has been increased for greater comfort.

The BMW E65 7 Series was the most technically advanced production vehicle BMW had ever produced at the time. As the flagship model, it introduced a large number of new technologies that were eventually carried over to the next generation of BMW’s. The E65 7 Series introduced a number of new technologies such as:

  • Valvetronic engine control (Variable valve lift replaced throttle butterflies for normal running conditions for added response, efficiency and power).
  • World introduction of Active Roll Stabilization (ARS) active Anti-roll bars on a sedan (alternative designations: Dynamic Drive, Adaptive Drive). ARS is a revolutionary system that almost completely eliminates body roll when cornering. It employs active anti-roll bars which use a hydraulic servo in the middle to actively counteract body roll. This results in increased comfort for passengers, and when coupled with Electronic Damper Control-Continuous (EDC-C) it raises comfort levels to new heights.
  • Self levelling air suspension on rear axle for increased comfort (optional)
  • Electronic Damper Control-Continuous (EDC-C)
  • Introduction of two fibre optic bus systems, MOST Bus (Media Orientated System Transport) and “Byteflight” (safety systems bus). These busses operate at 22.5Mbps and 10Mbps respectively.
  • The first introduction of the dedicated ‘Body-Controller Area Network’ K-CAN bus system operating at 100kbps, This replaced the slower (9.6kbps) I,K and P-Busses used on previous vehicles.
  • The first introduction of BMW’s revolutionary iDrive system, the first fully integrated series production vehicle systems controller.
  • World’s first infinitely variable intake manifold.
  • World introduction of electronic adaptive headlight technology.
  • World’s first 6-speed automatic transmission in a sedan.
  • Optional Automatic Soft Close system minimized the force required to close the doors, and would completely close them if improperly closed. This system also extended to the trunk lid, but unlike the door system was standard on all models.
  • Electromechanical parking brake. Not only could this system apply the parking brake in stop-and-go traffic situations to reduce tedium, but it could also automatically apply the parking brake after the ignition was switched off.
  • First BMW with DVD-based GPS Automotive navigation system.
  • First BMW to feature Bi-Xenon (HID) headlights.
  • First BMW to feature ‘Push-Button-Start’. The rectangular key-fob was inserted into a slot next to the steering wheel and the driver would push a button to start the engine. This method of starting the car would be the precursor for all future BMW models.
  • Radar based Active Cruise Control (ACC).

The BMW E65 7 Series introduced the iDrive control concept. The system was built on hardware similar to the MKIV system used by BMW in the late 90’s but featured a brand new interface and central control knob. Many of the functions such as climate, navigation, seat heating, telephony and car settings were incorporated into a single system allowing centralised control of those functions. iDrive was nicknamed “I Don’t Know Drive” because of the steep learning curve and complicated menu structures, with some sources claiming that it would take several hours to become familiar with the system. Complaints ranged from the number of steps required to complete simple tasks such as selecting a radio frequency to getting “lost” in the deep menu system. iDrive saw several updates during the production run to address complaints raised by owners. The first generation of the system relied on CD media for map data. In 2003 BMW updated the hardware to read DVD media, added a substantially faster processor and the ability to display maps in birds-eye view. Also added in 2003 were a ‘Menu’ and ‘Customisable’ button below the control knob. This was done to address the complaints of ‘getting lost’ in the menus. The last major update to the system came with the LCI model in 2005 which added buttons to the radio (ASK unit) that enabled skipping tracks or radio stations as well as a mode button to change operating modes. A larger, brighter display was added and faster, more advanced navigation hardware was introduced. The system also gained the capability to control a MP3 capable CD Changer. The interface was streamlined to resemble the iDrive CCC system. Although it may appear similar in function to the CCC iDrive (introduced in the BMW E60 5 Series and BMW E63/64 6 Series), the iDrive system in the E65/66 is unique to only that model. The system started a trend and today most car manufacturers offer in-car systems built around a central control knob (Audi Multi Media Interface, Mercedes-Benz Comand APS etc), an idea first brought to consumers by BMW in the E65 7 Series.

Of all the 7 Series models in BMW’s history, the BMW E65/E66-generation might be the most heavily criticized. Some of that criticism is deserved and some isn’t and much of it is debatable. However, what isn’t debatable is that the E65 7er is an excellent used value at the moment. So we’re going to put together a bit of a Buyer’s Guide for any enthusiasts looking to get into an inexpensive luxury car.

For this Buyer’s Guide, we’ll provide a brief crash course into the E65’s history, what it is, which models were noteworthy, what to look for and what to avoid. So let’s break it down.

bmw e65 yachtline

A Brief History

The E65 BMW 7 Series is almost certainly the least loved 7er of all time but much of its public malign is probably due to poor timing. When Chris Bangle led the team to develop the E65, he and his team had the tall task of designing a car to replace the E38 7 Series, one of the very best cars BMW has ever made.

When it debuted, it was not received well. The E65 was given the “Bangle Butt” nickname, despite the fact that the entire project was designed by a team and he wasn’t even the one to pen that specific design. Still, Bangle was a trooper and took the criticism, rather than throwing his team under the bus.

bmw e65 yachtline

It wasn’t only its design that was criticized, the E65 7 Series as a whole was quite controversial. For starters, it was by far the most high-tech and advanced BMW ever made at the time. But the problem was that technologies were so complicated that they were reliability nightmares. The E65 is famously one of the least reliable BMWs in history.

Despite all of that criticism, though, the E65 7 Series was actually quite good to drive. Its suspension was buttery smooth and its refinement was on an entirely different level than anything BMW has made prior. It was also quick, depending on which engine you chose, and handle well for its size and heft. And while its interior design wasn’t loved, its material quality and comfort were outstanding. So as a car, the E65 was quite good. However, there were a lot of issues with it.

bmw e65 yachtline

There were two body variants, so to speak. The E65 was the standard 7 Series but the E66 was the long-wheelbase model, as if the car wasn’t big enough. There were also two other variants; the E67 was the armored version for dictators and the E68 was the highly-limited hydrogen model. However, the only two models that really matter are the E65 and E66.

As far as engines go, there were three different inline-six engines on offer, two gasoline-powered and one turbo-diesel. There were also two different V8 models, one gasoline and one diesel. The top-of-the-line 760i came with a monster V12. It was pretty standard fare for the 7 Series at the time and every engine option was good. Not too many issues there. If we were to give some advice on engines, though, we’d say to stick with BMW’s inline-six offerings.

The BMW 7 Series is among the Top 10 most comfortable cars

While the 4.8 liter V8 offered in the 7er was a good engine, BMW’s straight-sixes of that generation are very solid, far more reliable that the V8. If you get an E65 7 Series with a straight-six, it will almost certainly be the most reliable aspect of the car. So at least you’ll have that going for you.

What to Avoid

I hate to sound all Doom and Gloom but the E65 7 Series as a whole might be a car to avoid. However, more specifically, don’t even look at one with too high of mileage for its year and absolutely don’t look at one that doesn’t have a maintenance record you can see. If you find an E65 7 Series that you just have to have, maybe it’s a great deal and the perfect spec for you, make sure it has a service history from a reputable BMW mechanic.

The E65 is a complicated car and one that requires a very experienced and knowledgeable BMW mechanic to fix. One look at forums and you’ll quickly find horror stories of E65’s stuck in a shop for weeks at a time, without being able to figure out what’s wrong with it. A skilled BMW mechanic will be able to figure it out. So if you want one, make sure the right person has been working on it.

bmw e65 yachtline

This might sound harsh but it’s honestly true — just buy an E38 7 Series instead. I hate saying things like that but there’s little about the E65 7 Series that makes it worth dealing with its reliability concerns. The E38 is probably the very best luxury car BMW has ever made; it still looks fantastic today, it drives superbly and it’s very reliable, as far as luxury cars go. It’s also inexpensive and its parts are plentiful.

If you want an old BMW luxury car, go for the E38. If you want something newer with more modern tech, get an E60 5 Series . The E65 is interesting but it’s probably not worth the headache.

BMW 7-Series E65/E66

The E65/E66 automobile platform is the basis for the 2002 through present BMW 7-series. It replaced the BMW E38 in 2002. E65 is the designation of the short wheel base version of the automobile, and E66 is the designation of the long wheel base version.

The arrival of this model heralded a new styling era for BMW, the work of chief designer Chris Bangle, with bold visual cues that did not premier on the scene without noted controversy from E38 community. The E65/E66 seems to be gaining favor after its colorful arrival, and it appears to be the gatekeeper for styling cues of future BMW models yet to come. The "Bangle-butt" rear styling has been especially controversial, and was toned down in a 2005 restyling.

The most important innovation contained in the 7 is also the most controversial one: the iDrive system. While able to manage a lot of functions -- on-board telematics, including GPS navigation, Internet access and the new BMW Assist system (for emergencies), as well as climate and stereo functions -- iDrive has a steep learning curve. Basic adjustments can be made rather easily.

@ bimmerfreak187 Unfortunately yes, I loved that car but too many repairs and I thought I didn't need the extended warranty, but I was very wrong. I needed a BMW with a warranty, so I traded up for a new 335i black on black(the best color combo ever). Picture was last one I took of the car regretfully.

This is the one that I bought recently to sell. I own small used car dealership specializing only in European cars. We took this pic in our little showroom area. I love the car, we got this car to top notch condition. Drives like a dream.

BMW X5 Security Plus with extra security features will be seen at Moscow Motor Show

The upcoming 2014 Moscow Motor Show will witness the arrival of an armoured version of the BMW X5. Called as the X5 Security Plus, it will offer protection up to VR6 standard, implying that it can withstand gunfire from common automatic rifles.

German manufacturer BMW says that the car's seam joints and connecting panels have all been upgraded and toughened safety glass has also been fitted.

The added weight of BMW's security enhancements will push the kerb weight of the X5 beyond 2250kg of the standard car.

One can expect the vehicle's 0-100kph sprint time of 4.9 seconds to increase as well.

Based on the xDrive50i, the X5 Security Plus gets a 4.4-litre V8 engine with 449 bhp and 649 Nm of peak torque. On the inside, it looks very much the same as the standard car.

However, BMW claims that the X5's driver aids and suspension systems have been modified, while new switchgear has been fitted to the centre console. The new BMW X5 Security Plus will be built alongside other armoured company models at a factory in Mexico. Published By: AtMigration Published On: Aug 28, 2014 --- ENDS ---
