PROJECT APEX
- Length: 115m
- Beam: 18.5m
- Gross Tonnage: 8,000GT (approx.)
Developed in close collaboration with renowned yacht builder LloydWerft in Bremerhaven this yacht’s true go anywhere, explorer exterior is distinguished by her large open spaces aft, and vast interior volume, carefully designed to let the outside in.
As a design created with global exploration at its heart, APEX comes equipped with cranes for launching two 20m deck stored tenders, as well as three additional tender and watertoy garages, a fully compliant helicopter deck and dedicated hangar. A snowmobile garage with long reach crane adds winter land based exploring capacity.
The owner’s deck is home to a vast suite with dressing rooms and bathrooms, a private office and a lounge, as well as offering direct access to a party area and infinity pool. An extensive spa with gym and massage room, cinema/conference room, large hospital and dive centre are just some of the additional facilities onboard.

Profile: The A Group
“Design is a part of every aspect of our lives. It’s in the cars we drive, the homes we live in. Even the devices we use to communicate and work with. This has had a major impact on our everyday lives and lifestyle as a whole. There’s a much higher level of awareness and preparation now than even 10 years ago. Every sector has had to deal with this process of transformation by attempting to meet the requirements of an increasingly demanding client base. You only have to look at how the megayacht world has changed in recent times to see that”.
Richard Hein talking about the changes he sees as a huge opportunity for the sector. And he knows what he’s talking about as his expertise is unparalleled. The naval architect and designer put his stamp on yacht design with The A Group and, between 1992 and 2004, was the brain behind the success of the likes of Oceanco, which remains one of the world’s leading megayacht yards.
Hein’s knowledge and experience give him a unique insight into the nautical scene. Spanning everything from A for The A Group to V for VegaYachts, Hein has made a major contribution to the nautical alphabet, endlessly applying his creativity to ensuring his clients get what they want and need in a world offering an increasingly dazzling array of options.
“We operate on several fronts,” adds Hein. “Looking after our clients’ interest is our primary goal: that means everything from selecting the yard to the design of the boat with all the technical, legal, financial and bureaucratic factors that a large yacht project involves. Now, seeking out quality has become an imperative for the sector too”. Because of its somewhat peculiar nature, the nautical sector cannot really be referred to as an industry just yet, unlike its aeronautical and automotive counterparts.
“The real challenge will involve incorporating increasingly strict standards, particularly with regard to safety and emissions,” continues Hein. A process more of evolution than revolution with technological innovation one of the main drivers. “Design as an end in itself no longer suffices,” stresses Hein. “Paradoxically, in the past, there was more space for manoeuvre even though there were fewer solutions on offer. But now the scenario is completely different and there is much greater availability particularly in terms of materials and technologies, so you really need the skills and technical training to do things properly”. Ultimately, this boils down to design – or form – following function.
I Dynasty, a megayacht stretching 101 metres, is the product of just such an approach. Her strikingly original exterior lines are the work of The A Group, while her interiors are by the Studio Massari. But it is not simply her good looks that make her such an accomplished design. She is also a powerhouse of technology. In recent years, there has been something of a race to make yachts larger and larger, which means accommodating more guests.
These rapid changes ultimately led to the establishment of new sector standards in the form of the PYC (Passenger Yacht Code) which lays down the specific areas in which a yacht must be compliant to be permitted to carry between 12 and 36 guests. On paper, this might seem a relatively straightforward issue to deal with, but in practice, it involved a whole series of highly complex technical parameters. “The challenge was to comply with the safety standards established by the PYC, particularly in relation to fire protection through the use of escape routes, fire doors and fire-retardant materials, for example” continues Hein.
“All this has to be incorporated without giving up on the idea of creating something unique and exclusive that will meet the client’s wishes. We found ourselves faced with a completely new scenario that demanded a change of mentality in how we approach projects,” he says, adding: “I don’t think that a designer can design a yacht this complex without involving the yard directly. It’s a process of constant revision, the most important part of the whole game is striking a balance between the various roles of builder, engineers and designer”.
A game in which Richard Hein looks sure to hold a winning hand.

Private jet and yachts seized as three arrested in £76m luxury care homes raid
Three people have been arrested as part of a sting by the Serious Fraud Office into property developer the Carlauren Group.
Tuesday 12 March 2024 14:09, UK
A private jet and two yachts have been seized, as three people have been arrested, in a £76m raid on a group who ran luxury care homes.
Two sites were raided across St Leonard's, Dorset, and Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, as part of the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) probe, supported by the National Crime Agency (NCA).
The investigation is looking into the UK registered property developer, the Carlauren Group, which collapsed into administration in November 2019.
When it folded, the SFO said that it led to some elderly residents being forced to move out, and left 600 investors out of pocket.
The Carlauren Group bought 23 properties across the UK, often former hotels including the historic Windlestone Hall in Durham, and allegedly claimed to offer annual 10 per cent returns to investors as it sought to turn the buildings into high-end care homes.
However, the SFO said only nine of these became operational and some continued as hotels instead of care homes.
Alongside that, the group allegedly purchased a number of supercars, including two Lamborghinis and a McLaren 570GT, a private jet and two yachts.
Nick Ephgrave QPM, director of the Serious Fraud Office, said: "This company's abrupt collapse has created turmoil and enormous anxiety for many, with elderly people forced to vacate their homes and investors left with nothing.
"Today's arrests are a major development in our investigation and a step towards getting the answers so many people need."
The group was said to have had 600 people and companies invest in the scheme through the purchase of rooms that were to be rented out to the elderly.
This was inside luxury facilities that boasted of swimming pools, room service and other amenities.
According to the SFO, the rooms were advertised and sold with a guaranteed annual payout and opportunity to sell the asset back for a profit after 10 years

Three people have been arrested after a care home company bought two Lamborghinis, a Mclaren 570GT, a private jet and two yachts in an alleged £76 million scam.
The Serious Fraud Office investigated property developer the Carlauren Group after they fell into administration, forcing elderly residents to leave their care homes.
Between 2015 and 2019 the group had purchased 23 hotels to renovate them into care-homes, including the historic Windlestone Hall in Durham.
But only nine of these were ever operational, with some even continuing to operate as hotels.
Instead, the group were found to have made huge luxury purchases on two Lamborghinis, a Mclaren 570GT, a private jet and two yachts, which were previously seized by administrators.
Carlauren Group collapsed into administration in 2019.
More than 600 investors have been left out of pocket, after they were promised the care homes would include swimming pools and room service.
Rooms were sold with a guaranteed annual payout with the opportunity to resell with up to a 25% profit.
The Serious Fraud Office carried out raids in in St Leonard’s, Dorset and Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire as part of their investigation.
Nick Ephgrave QPM, Director of the Serious Fraud Office, said: ‘This company’s abrupt collapse has created turmoil and enormous anxiety for many, with elderly people forced to vacate their homes and investors left with nothing.

- Guide to Russia
What can you do at Moscow City?
- Dine in style: Moscow City is home to 100+ cafes and restaurants, including Europe’s highest restaurant and ice-cream shop
- See Moscow like never before: Ascend to one of Moscow City’s observation decks for an unparalleled panorama of Moscow

Moscow City is a multifunctional complex in the west of Moscow, which has come to represent the booming business of Russia’s capital. Its skyscrapers enrich Moscow’s skyline, contrasting the medieval cupolas and Stalinist high-rises. Visitors to Moscow City can enjoy entertainment high in the sky, as the complex is home not just to offices, but to restaurants, cinemas, viewing platforms, and museums.

History of Moscow City
Moscow City was first conceived in 1991 by honoured Soviet architect Boris Tkhor, who proposed to construct a business center in Moscow. It would be complete with gleaming skyscrapers rivalling those of New York and London, to reflect the new life and growing ambitions of post-Soviet Russia.
The chosen site was a stone quarry and disused industrial zone in western Moscow, in between the Third Ring Road and Moskva River. Initially, the territory was divided into 20 sections arranged in a horseshoe shape around a central zone. The skyscrapers would increase in height as they spiralled around the central section, with shorter structures built on the waterfront to give the taller buildings behind a view of the river.
Architect Gennady Sirota, who contributed to iconic projects such as the Olympic Sports Complex on Prospekt Mira, was selected as the chief architect, and many other world-famous architects were attracted to Moscow to realise their visions in Moscow City.
What can you see and do at Moscow City?
Where Moscow’s cityscape was once dominated by Stalin’s Seven Sisters skyscrapers , this is no more. Moscow City is home to eight of Russia’s ten tallest buildings, six of which exceed 300 metres in height. More buildings are still under construction there today, including the One Tower (which will be Europe’s second-tallest building). Once completed, Moscow City will comprise more than 20 innovative structures.
Each of Moscow City’s skyscrapers was designed by its own architect, lending the cluster of skyscrapers a unique appearance. Aside from being a site of architectural wonder, Moscow City is a place for leisure and entertainment with over 100 cafes and restaurants, exhibition spaces, cinemas, viewing platforms, and more.

Federation Tower
- East Tower: 374m, 97 floors; West Tower: 243m, 63 floors
- Completed in 2017
- Architects: Sergey Tchoban and Peter Schweger
The East Federation Tower is the tallest building in Moscow, and the second-tallest building in Europe after the Lakhta Centre in St Petersburg. Visitors can enjoy a luxurious meal of seafood, truffles or steak at restaurant ‘Sixty’ on the 62nd floor of the West Tower, or visit Europe’s highest observation deck, ‘Panorama 360’, on the 89th floor of the East Tower.
Did you know? The ice cream and chocolate shop on the 360 observation deck are the highest in the world!
- South Tower: 354m, 85 floors; North Tower: 254m, 49 floors
- Completed in 2015
- Architect: Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP
The South OKO Tower is the third-tallest building in Russia and Europe. Here, you can visit ‘Ruski’ to dine on hearty Russian cuisine cooked on a real Russian stove, and have a drink in the ice bar. Alternatively, visit restaurant, nightclub and performance space ‘Birds’; the restaurant is the highest in Europe, situated on the 86th floor roof terrace alongside an observation deck. The OKO Towers are also home to karaoke club ‘City Voice’.
Did you know? Underneath OKO Towers is the largest underground parking in Europe, with 16 levels and 3,400 parking spaces.
Mercury Tower
- 339m tall, 75 floors
- Architects : Mikhail Posokhin, Frank Williams, Gennady Sirota
Another multifunctional skyscraper, which was designed as the first truly ‘green’ building in Moscow. The Mercury Tower has a distinct geometric shape and copper-coloured glazing, and was the tallest building in Europe upon completion. Visit ‘More i myaso’ (Sea and meat) on the first floor of the tower to enjoy European and Mediterranean cuisine whilst surrounded by greenery. On the 2nd and 40th floors a modern art gallery, the ‘ILONA-K artspace’, has just opened.
City of Capitals
- Moscow Tower: 302m, 76 floors; St Petersburg Tower: 257m, 65 floors
- Completed in 2009
- Architect: Bureau NBBJ
The unique geometric design of the City of Capitals towers resembles stacks of rotating blocks, and is rooted in Constructivism of the early Soviet period (many Soviet Constructivist buildings can be found in Moscow). Visitors to the Moscow Tower can enjoy a range of cuisines – traditional Italian dishes on the summer terrace of ‘Tutto Bene’, Panasian cuisine in the tropical luxury of the ‘Bamboo Bar’ on the 1st floor’, and poke or smoothie bowls at ‘Soul in the Bowl’ cafe on the 80th floor.
Tower on the Embankment
- Tower A: 84m; Tower B:127m; Tower C: 268m, 61 floors
- Completed in 2007
- Architects: Vehbi Inan and Olcay Erturk
After completion, the Tower on the Embankment was the tallest building in Europe, and is now the 13th tallest. It houses the headquarters of several large Russian and international companies, including IBM and KPMG. There are two cafes located on the 1st floor of Tower C – self-service café ‘Obed Bufet’ (Lunch Buffet) and Bakery Chain ‘Khleb Nasushchny’ (Daily Bread).
Evolution Tower
- 255m tall, 54 floors
- Architects: Philip Nikandrov and RMJM Scotland Ltd
Evolution is Moscow City’s most recognisable tower, and the 11th tallest building in Russia. Its façade is a true architectural marvel, comprising continuous strips of curved glazing spiralling high into the sky. According to the architect, Philip Nikandrov, the spiral shape of the tower honours centuries of architectural design in Russia, from the onion domes of St Basil's Cathedral to Vladimir Shukhov’s Tatlin Tower, a masterpiece of Constructivist design. Outside the Evolution tower is a landscaped terrace and pedestrian zone descending to the Presnenskaya Embankment, which was also designed by Nikandrov.
Did you know? Moscow’s largest wedding palace was supposed to be built on the site of the Evolution tower, though the project was abandoned.
- 239m tall, 60 floors
- Completed in 2011
Imperia’s interesting design has a curved roof and an arched glass façade. Inside the tower are various cafes including ‘City Friends’ for all-day breakfasts and light lunches, ‘Mama in the City’ for simple meals of Russian cuisine, and ‘abc kitchen’ for European and Indian-inspired dishes. Alternatively, visit ‘High Bar’ on the 56th floor for cocktails with a view. In Imperia you’ll also find the Museum of High-Rise Construction in Moscow (suitably located on the 56th floor), and the Camera Immersive Theatre.
Did you know? Inside Vystavochnaya metro station is the Metro Museum , dedicated to the history of the beautiful Moscow Metro!
- 130m tall, 26 floors
- Completed in 2001
- Architect: Boris Tkhor
Tower 2000 was Moscow City’s first tower. It stands on the opposite bank of the Moskva River, and houses a viewing platform from which visitors can admire an unparalleled panorama of Moscow City. The Bagration Bridge reaches across the river from the tower to Moscow City, and underneath are piers from where you can take boat trips.

Afimall is Moscow’s largest entertainment and shopping complex, home to 450 shops, cafes and restaurants, a cinema, and a virtual-reality game park. The shopping centre is located in the central section of Moscow City, and a cinema and concert hall are currently under construction there.
What’s nearby?
Sechenov Botanical Gardens: The botanical gardens of the First Moscow State Medical University was created for students’ training and research in 1946. Today it is open for free visits, and is home to a large arboretum.
Park Krasnaya Presnya: This park belonged to the Studenets estate of the Gagarin princes. It is a monument of 18th and 19th century landscaping, with Dutch ponds, ornate bridges, and tree-lined alleys. There are also sports facilities, sports equipment rental, and cafes.

16 Yacht Charters That Make for a Strangely Affordable Family Vacation
Posted: December 11, 2023 | Last updated: December 12, 2023
While a yacht may be the first thing that pops to mind when you think of the ultra-wealthy, chartering one might not be as expensive as you think. When you're splitting the costs between several family members or friends you are paying for transportation and stay and it can make sense financially.
You can also keep money in your wallet by selecting an older vessel or taking charge of sailing yourself (hiring a crew always costs extra).
So let’s take a look at options that may be within reach for people who aren’t living paycheck to paycheck but aren’t brunching with the Kardashians either.
Editor's note: prices are subject to change and may vary depending on the time of the year.

San Antonio motor yacht
The San Antonio is a luxury motor yacht measuring 146 feet in length that was built in 2018. This huge vessel is capable of accommodating 36 guests in 18 cabins.
The cost to charter it starts at $21,000 per week plus expenses, not including a crew of eight (which we recommend).
Divide the cost by capacity, and that’s only $583 per person per week to start. That’s practically unbeatable for a boat of this size, allowing you to make other savvy moves with your money .

Virginia Mia motor yacht
Constructed in 2001 (with several subsequent refits), the Virginia Mia is another luxury motor yacht that’s 95 feet in length.
Custom-designed by Nuvolari Lenard, this vessel can sleep eight guests in four cabins as well as an additional crew of four.
Still, thanks to the age of the yacht, the cost of chartering starts at $15,000 plus expenses per week, or just under $2,000 per guest sans crew.
Nautilus sailing yacht
White motor yachts are convenient and luxe, sailing yachts promise a more traditional experience.
At nearly 125 feet, the Nautilus is a large option styled by Robert Delus. Built in 2008, it sleeps 10 guests in five cabins. At this size, you'll likely need a crew of six.
The cost to charter this beauty starts at $17,500 per week sans expenses, again just under $2,000 per person — which really isn't bad for all you're getting.
Grow Your $$: 11 brilliant ways to build wealth after 40
Aegean Clipper sailing yacht
The Aegean Clipper is another sailing vessel, this one built all the way back in 1999 — which translates into cost savings for you.
The yacht is another biggie at nearly 135 feet. With 11 cabins, the boat can accommodate up to 24 guests plus five crew members as needed.
In total, your group will have to shell out a minimum of $13,000 plus expenses per week — just over $379 per person. That's a great deal, comparatively speaking.
Silver Fox expedition yacht
If you're looking for something a little smaller that can go the distance, the Silver Fox expedition yacht might be for you.
Built in 2009, the 72-foot yacht accommodates six guests in three cabins for a more intimate experience. There's room for a crew of two if you need their expertise.
With a starting cost of $16,500 per week, the Silver Fox will run each person over $2,700 per week, but the small group may be worth it.
Tivoli expedition yacht
Traveling with a group of the same size but want more length and a bigger crew?
The Tivoli expedition yacht, constructed in 2001 and remodeled in 2010, can fit four crew members. This stunner is just over 90 feet long and can take you on those long hauls.
Yes, it will cost more at $25,000 per week, or over $4,100 per person. But if you can afford it, it’s a dream come true out on the open water.

Shangri-La classic yacht
Classics are classics for a reason, as they stand the test of time. Such is the case with the Shangri-La, a vintage yacht sure to take you to that magical place.
This vessel sleeps six in three cabins and promises to be child-friendly. The Shangri-La was constructed way back in 1965, and it is 82 feet long with space for three crew members.
A week on this rig will cost you $16,500, or just over $2,700 a pop.
Sai Kung classic yacht
Another vintage beauty, the Sai Kung classic yacht was born in 1975 and got a makeover in 2015. That updated this 79-foot vessel that can sleep nine people in four cabins.
Be sure you’re a nautical whiz, as there’s no room for additional crew here, but that will only save you money.
All told, the Sai Kung will set your group back $17,500 per week, just under $2,000 per person.
Glorious open yacht
Outdoor yachts are designed for those who truly want to live outside, which you can do easily on the Glorious.
This sporty 72-footer is ready to help you dive, scuba, and more, with room for six guests in three cabins. You can bring a crew of two for extra help, of course.
Built in 2007 and remodeled nine years later, chartering the Glorious will run you $16,500 per week, again $2,700 per person.
9 nearly secret things to do if you fly Southwest
Speedy T open yacht
Looking for a bigger open yacht that’s perfect for swim buffs? Charter the Speedy T, a vessel that’s 80 feet long and primed for dips in refreshing ocean waters.
Like many of the yachts on this list, it accommodates six guests in three cabins and has room for three crew members.
All told, one week on this sleek ship — built in 1994 and renovated in 2011 — is $19,500 before expenses, translating to $3,250 per head. But the adventure promises to be unforgettable.
Etoile Magique catamaran yacht
With extra stability even at higher speeds, catamaran yachts like the Etoile Magique are great options for adventure.
This 80-foot vessel is roomy for its size, with room for 16 guests in eight cabins. There’s space for a three-person crew, too.
Constructed in 2004 and remodeled a decade later, this is a budget-friendly adventure in the making. At $18,710 per week before expenses, that shakes out to a bit over $1,100 apiece.
Fuerte 3 catamaran yacht
Meaning “strong” in Spanish, the Fuerte 3 catamaran yacht — built in 2004 and renovated in 2010 — offers a more intimate experience than the Etoile Magique, with space for nine guests in four cabins.
On the smaller side, at 67 feet, you can bring two crew members along if you need them. The price tag for one week is around $22,000, or just over $2,400 a pop. This vessel is best in shallower waters.
Astrape sport fishing yacht
If your idea of the perfect vacation is sport fishing, this boat is for you. The Astrape sport fishing yacht comes with top-of-the-line fishing equipment so you can catch your dream fish.
Built in 2008 and remodeled in 2016, the 76-foot vessel sleeps eight in four cabins. It also has room for three crew members.
On the pricier side at $29,000, a week will cost each person nearly $3,700 — worth it if you can show off that once-in-a-lifetime catch, though!
Barefoot sport fishing yacht
Giving us some real Orca energy, the Barefoot sport fishing yacht was built in 2006 — much later than that famed vessel from "Jaws."
The 64-foot boat is designed for fishing in shallower waters, perfect for you and five friends who will share three cabins. Two crew members can fit, too.
This yacht is cheaper than the Astrape at $17,500, so six folks will pay just under $3,000 a head per week.
Prenses Lila gulet yacht
Gulet yachts are known for their tall masts, ample deck space, and Turkish origins — perfect for a Mediterranean voyage.
To that end, the Prenses Lila is an excellent option for groups of 18. At 114 feet with eight cabins and space for five crew members, this boat beckons.
You can charter Prenses Lila — built in 2009 and remodeled in 2009 — for $17,500 per week in September.
Dreamland gulet yacht
The second gulet yacht and the final boat we’re covering is Dreamland, which will surely take you there.
Constructed in 2006, 12 guests can sleep in six suites on this 105-foot vessel as well as five crew members.
You can book Dreamland for around $26,000 in high season. Divide that by 12, and you land on about $2,200 per person. That might require some financial fitness , but yachts like this don’t come around every day.
Bottom line
Spending your days sunning and swimming aboard a luxurious yacht may seem like an out-of-reach proposition, but we’re here to tell you it’s possible.
In fact, with planning and savvy budgeting, you can score your dream seafaring adventure. You can even use your favorite credit card to book and earn travel rewards .
Traveling by charter yacht is also more environmentally friendly than flying, which means you can feel good about your sailing vacation.

Private jet, supercars and yachts seized as three arrested in £76m luxury care home ‘fraud’ probe

A PRIVATE jet, supercars and yachts have been seized as part of a £76million fraud probe into luxury care homes.
The Serious Fraud Office (SFO) also arrested three people after carrying out raids in St Leonard's, Dorset , and Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire .
It came as part of an investigation into property development firm the Carlauren Group.
Some elderly residents were forced to leave their homes when the group collapsed in 2019 and 600 investors were left out of pocket.
Carlauren bought 23 properties across the UK - including the historic Windlestone Hall in Durham - to turn into luxury care homes.
Hundreds of moguls and companies handed over cash to fund rooms that would be rented to elderly residents.

In return, Carlauren promised a guaranteed annual payout and the opportunity for investors to sell the asset back after ten years for up to a 25 per cent profit.
They boasted the properties would include high-end facilities - including swimming pools and room service.
But just nine of the premises operated as care facilities, while some continued as hotels .
The SFO said the group purchased three high-performance sports cars — two Lamborghinis and a Mclaren 570GT - and a private jet.

Carlauren, who also allegedly purchased two yachts , claimed the lavish items were for company use.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Four U.S. Army boats, loaded with tons of equipment and steel pier segments, left Virginia on Tuesday, heading to Gaza as part of the U.S. effort to expand the delivery of food and other supplies to starving Palestinians as Israel’s war against Hamas drags on.
The ships pulled out of docks at Joint Base Langley-Eustis and headed down the James River toward the Atlantic Ocean for what could be a month-long voyage to the Mediterranean Sea. There, at a yet-to-be-announced location along the Gaza shore, they will build and begin to operate a floating dock to receive the aid.
Since Hamas militants attacked Israel on Oct. 7, Israel’s military has battered the territory, killing more than 30,000 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, and creating a humanitarian catastrophe . The U.N. says virtually all of Gaza’s 2.3 million people are struggling to find food. But getting humanitarian aid to the area has been difficult, due to the ongoing hostilities and struggles to coordinate with the Israeli military, which has blocked routes and slowed deliveries due to inspections.
The latest Pentagon plan calls for the U.S. military to build what is called a modular causeway system. Off shore, the Army will build a large floating platform where ships can unload large containers of aid. Then the aid will be transferred by the Army to a motorized string of steel causeway sections that have been pushed to the shore.
That pier is expected to be as much as 1,800 feet (550 meters) long, with two lanes, and the Pentagon has said it could accommodate the delivery of more than 2 million meals a day for Gaza residents. Officials have not said who will be unloading the containers and taking the aid ashore. President Joe Biden has said there will be no U.S. troops on the ground in Gaza.
On Tuesday, as family members and senior Army commanders watched, about 70 soldiers with the 7th Transportation Brigade (Expeditionary) pulled away from the docks in four U.S. Army vessels: the USAV Wilson Wharf, USAV Matamoros and USAV Monterrey, all Army landing crafts, and the larger USAV SP4 James A. Loux, a logistics support watercraft.
The brigade’s commander, Army Col. Sam Miller, said about 500 of his soldiers will participate in the mission. All together, Pentagon officials have said about 1,000 U.S. troops will be involved.
Calling it a complicated mission, Miller said the transit will take about a month, but it will depend on weather and any possible high seas. The actual construction, he said, will take about a week, but that also could be hampered by weather. Then it will take additional time to get the delivery process coordinated with those providing the aid and the system up and running. Defense officials have said it will take about two months to get the deliveries started.
The Army’s vessels and maritime capabilities are unique and not as well known as the Navy’s. The last time the 7th Transportation Brigade did a similar mission to construct a large pier was in Haiti in 2010. But it has participated in a number of major military exercises.
“The soldiers here are energized, they’re motivated, they’re excited,” Miller said, adding that the new humanitarian mission “gives them purpose and meaning” and highlights the Army’s watercraft. He noted that just 36 hours after Biden ordered the operation, the first Army vessel — the USAV General Frank S. Besson logistics ship — left Joint Base Langley-Eustis on Saturday.
Miller said a larger Maritime Sealift Command ship will also be leaving Virginia in the coming days, and will be carrying some of the bigger equipment and more of the steel pier segments.
