Planet Solar French Polynesia 2 scaled e1678678039657

New Zealand based LOMOcean Marine - naval architect and boat designer - offers custom and production boat designs to the global market, tailored to the specific requirements of each client. The result is an ever expanding range of mono-hull, catamaran, trimaran and wavepiercer designs for the pleasure, commercial (ferry, tug, crew boat, work boat etc), military (fast interceptors, patrol craft, missile boats) and super yacht markets (including shadow boats). These designs are developed with the assistance of modern CFD and FEA software and honed in the towing tank and wind tunnel. A passion for innovation has created remarkable ships including stealth military vessels such as the trimarans Klewang and Golok, an 18m tank boat and award winning designs, including Ultimate Lady, a 27m wavepiercer catamaran and the 39m catamaran, The Beast. The radical Earthrace (Ady Gil) smashed the UIM world circumnavigation record for a power boat and Turanor Planet Solar was the first ever solar vehicle to circle the globe. Not all the designs are radical; the conservative motor yacht Black Pearl is a demonstration of the company’s versatility.

New Roger Hill design takes shape with DuFLEX

new zealand power catamaran builders

The divinely named Celeste , a 12-metre Roger Hill-designed power catamaran, is in build at G&T Marine, Auckland – the first-time seasoned boat builder Grant Symmans has worked with the DuFLEX panel system and Z-press from ATL Composites.

The privately-owned, custom-built, displacement-hull powercat is on track for delivery by May 2023 to an experienced owner looking for volume and ease of cruising.

So far, according to Grant, he has used the Z-press to join the DuFLEX panels for superstructure and cabin top.

“It’s a first for me,” he states. “Roger is a huge fan, so we went with it. It’s labour saving, comes as a kit, and the DuFLEX is lightweight and sturdy.”

The 12-metre vessel is a “fairly straight forward” build, single level sedan with a beam of 4.8-metres.

“Using DuFLEX has made construction a simple process and at this stage we’re impressed with it. We’ll know more when we do the hulls,” Grant adds.

Using ATL’s Z-Press streamlines the composite panel joining process, applying heat and pressure to cure the epoxy adhesive on the Z-Joints. Joins cure fully in 7 to 20 minutes, depending on the ambient temperature, type of hardener, core type and thickness of the panel.

Roger Hill, specialist power multihull designer, says the client sought a well-appointed powercat for “the next phase of his cruising lifestyle”.

“I have always said that these displacement hull power cats we design are ‘sailor’s power boats’,” he explains. “That is, when you have been a yachtie all your life and you’re facing the unavoidable ravages of time on your old body but don’t want to give up boating, these cats are a good option!

“For Auckland-based yachties who have been cruising around at around 6 to 8 knots, a lot of the time motoring (as you get older), and a lot of the time beating to windward, these smaller displacement hull power cats are ideal.

“They cruise most economically around 14 to 15 knots, or about twice the speed you have been used to going all of your previous boating life, and they are really fuel efficient. Also, they will motor directly into any head wind and nasty sea state without spilling your drink, or leaning over.”

Fortuitously, the client is Roger’s very first when he struck out on his own and established his design firm 27 years ago.

“He owned his lovely 11.9-metre cruising yacht from new, it fitted his requirements perfectly all of that time and he kept it in immaculate condition. Like all of us, he is getting older and the physicality of sailing a yacht basically on your own was starting to tell.

“He made the very hard decision to sell and move on with the next phase of his boating life. They went out for a ride on a smaller 10-metre displacement power cat we designed and from that, he commissioned his new 12-metre design.”

While there is nothing particularly new or radical about the design, there are some unique features.

“The client wanted something that he could trust and depend on to fulfil his future yachting aspirations,” explains Roger. “As with the original sailing yacht, the new power cat is specifically detailed around his requirements.

“Things like the very clever swimming diving platform that lowers down between the motors to form steps down to a wider bottom panel that allows easy access into the water for diving and launching a small RIB.

“It’s just the two of them, and the layout will be very comfortable for them to live aboard for extended periods through the summer as they have done with their yacht for many years.

new zealand power catamaran builders

“The choice to go with outboards was based on being able to explore areas they have previously not been able access with a deep draft keel, so adding a new dimension to their cruising ambitions.”

The choice to use the DuFLEX system came from the client seeing it for himself, visiting the 16-metre Omahu  and speaking to its owner who had a previous sailing cat built out of DuFLEX and was extremely positive about the process.

“The preliminary design for the structure of “Celeste” was based on standard foam cored composite boat building methods. From that the options were costed up and DuFLEX won the job!”

Cored with Divinycell foam, the DuFLEX panels in Celeste have a combination of H80 and H100 densities in the hull shell. The hull bottoms are cored with 20mm H100 DuFLEX Strips that are laminated with a 460 grm unidirectional E-Fibreglass which will have an additional laminate applied on both sides, while hull sides are a mix of H80 thicknesses and laminated with double layers of 800grm quadraxial chosen to meet performance and engineering requirements.

Grant Symmans was a more traditional builder accustomed to using plywood, timber, and fibreglass skinning methods of construction, but he was intrigued with system and its multiple benefits – precision cut, time saving, labour saving and minimal waste.

Grant and his two co-workers are now well into the build.

“They made the large cabin top first and it went together very well and quickly, and they are now starting to plank up the first hull.

“The client, whose father was a New Zealand timber boat builder and built many cold-moulded Kauri sailing yachts, was quite tentative about the process but is now also becoming much more relaxed and happy as he sees the boat coming to life.”

20m Performance Sailing Catamaran

Carbon high performance cruising cat.

This 20m resin infused all carbon high performance cruising cat ‘Kotuku’ was commissioned by an Auckland based client and built in Auckland by a team of highly skilled boat builders led by Jon Douglas.

The cat features a rotating carbon wing mast which was part of the 'no compromise' design package put together by a team led by RHYD that included top in the world in their field of foil design, mechanical engineering, composite engineering, rig and sail design.

The design has proved to be an outstanding performer in competitive fleet racing in the New Zealand multihull fleet. On the race track boat speed regularly exceeds true wind speed and sailing to windward the boat also exhibits zero leeway thanks to the asymmetric foil package.

It's a phenonemon of these design that they easily achieve the same height as a TP52, but at twice the speed.

Below decks, and alongside the high performance, comes a live aboard pacakge with no compromise for comfort and livability, set up for long range cruising.

Carbon Cats 20m Powercat Nearing Completion

new zealand power catamaran builders

When Kiwi international offshore powerboat championship-winning competitor, Wayne Valder decided he wanted a large pleasure cat, he set his sights on something fast.

“I am coming to the end of my racing career so was looking for something else challenging and a bit more futuristic than a conventional flybridge cruiser or sportfisher.

“I am used to running upwards of 140mph in my MTI powercat on the US offshore circuit, so while I didn’t plan anything quite that fast in pleasure boat form, I still wanted something reasonably quick.”, says Wayne.

His quest took him to the leading light in high-performance pleasure cats, Roger Hill, who drew up a 20m foiling asymmetrical cat, with enough horsepower to reach around 45 knots. Once the plans were completed, Clevedon based, Scott Lane Boatbuilders were given the task of putting the boat together.

While Scott Lane has an enviable reputation for building Elite monohulls, this 20m Roger Hill design is his first power cat, plus his first all carbon fibre vessel, (hence the branding, Carbon Cats). Scott Lane built female moulds and then sent them to Tauranga boat builder Nic de May Yachts, producing epoxy-infused carbon components. The composite parts were then sent back to Scott Lane’s boatyard for assembly. Nina Heatley of Clever Fox Projects was responsible for the composite engineering and details.

new zealand power catamaran builders

“Essentially the hull is four main components, and we were able to leave the sides off as long possible during construction, so the builders had easy access to the interior and were able to do most of the joinery and fit-out before we closed it all in”, says Scott.

There is 40mm of foam core in the running surfaces, 20mm topsides, with all bulkheads, flooring and structural areas infused carbon. Overall displacement fully loaded will be around 40 tonnes. The current mould can be stretched out to 22m with an additional 600m wider beam. LOA is 20.27m, with an LWL of 17.10m, maximum beam of 6.70m (1.98m hull beam) and a draft of 1.47m.

Wayne doesn’t plan to build just one boat, hence the set of moulds and already hull #2 is under development. He intends to take Carbon Cats to the world market and has already had some keen interest from local and overseas potential buyers.

“This is the future for boating, and I can see this boat being able to get to Fiji in around 40 hours, and Sydney in 34 hours, which is unheard off in a conventional monohull motor yacht”.

Wayne’s plans include having a crack at established long-distance speed records such as the Sydney to Auckland and Around NZ records, both held by the late Ginger Gibbs.

“Speed and efficiency in bigger boats have always interested me, and after speaking to Roger and learning more about his reasoning for his asymmetrical foiling powercats, I could see we were both on the same page”, says Wayne.

Part of optimising the top speed and the economy at lower cruising speeds a lifting foil between the hulls was included in the design. CFD consultant Giuseppe Musca was tasked with analysing the performance and powering requirements and developing a suitable foil design. The carbon foil generates approx. Twenty tonnes of lift at the optimum cruising speed and the trim and ride stability is looked after by a Humphree interceptor ride control system mounted on each transom.

If you want to do over 40 knots in a boat this size, you will need plenty of horsepower. This is provided with a pair of 1300hp M.A.N V8s, on jackshafts, linked to ZF665V gearboxes with 1.97:1 ratio. The driveline is shafts and underwater props with minimal drag P brackets. Fuel capacity is 9200 litres, and the Carbon Cats 20 will also be available with smaller 800hp engines. The vessel is predicted to have a cruising range of 900nm at wide-open throttle.

Wayne admits that they still have a lot of development to do with the foil and propellers, but all that will have to wait until the boat is launched in a few months.

The layout features a tender garage with a large rise/fall hydraulic platform, plus four cabins, including a full-beam forward master. All accommodation is in the hulls with the master stateroom across the forward area of the tunnel.

The spacious saloon has a port side galley and lounger with the helm and wet bar opposite. The cockpit is an entertainer’s dream with a central table aft, day head and plenty of open spaces. Wayne has chosen a Bentley inspired interior, with the hull painted in Bentley Orange.

Above the cockpit and access by a fixed set of steps with a flush hatch over is the ‘boat deck’ and helicopter landing space. This is an extensive deck space area and will also have a davit crane and large tender storage.

If you are keen to take advantage of owning hull#2, at a price of around NZD 5,995,000,  contact Wayne Valder: 0274951279 |Scott Lane: 0274765443.
