There is big news, and there is Rolex big news, and in some ways, ne'er the twain shall meet. At Baselworld this year, Rolex debuted a first for the company: the very first, ever, Rolex delivered on a rubber strap. Now, for most companies this would have little effect on watch enthusiasts other than to evoke (very) tepid interest at best, and boredom at worst – but this is not an ordinary rubber strap, this is an official, designed-and-tested-and-thoroughly-obsessed-over-by-Rolex rubber strap. And thereby hangs a tale.

The Yachtmaster, as we have mentioned in some of our previous coverage , occupies a somewhat particular place in Rolex’s lineup of sports watches; it shares water-resistance and a turning bezel with the Submariner (the latter is water resistant to 300 m while the Yachtmaster standard model is water resistant to 100 m). It is certainly not a tool watch; the Yachtmaster is offered in either platinum and steel, or gold and steel (that’s Rolesium and Rolesor, lest we forget) and is either quietly or unequivocally luxurious depending on what size and metal you go for (Rolex makes the Yachtmaster in both 35 mm and 40 mm sizes). 

The Yachtmaster’s history goes back to the first introduction of the watch in 1992, although the name, interestingly enough, appears on the dial of a prototype Yachtmaster Chronograph from the late 1960s (a watch so legendary I am actually forced to use the word; one of three known is in the collection of Mr. John Goldberger; we covered it – and a host of other remarkable ultra-rare watches from his collection – in a very memorable episode of Talking Watches ).

The term “Yachtmaster” is also, incidentally, used for a certificate of competency in yachting which is issued by the Royal Yachting Association, although we’re unaware of any specific association between the RYA and the Yachtmaster watch.

Now, this newest version of the Yachtmaster does take a few pages from the existing Yachtmaster playbook: 100-meter water resistance, a bidirectional turning bezel, and a dial and hands that echo the Submariner. There are also a couple of features that may make vintage Sub enthusiasts wonder if Rolex mightn’t have an exceedingly subtle sense of humor; the gilt coronet and “Rolex,” and the red lettering, both features which according to HODINKEE founder Ben Clymer would have, had they appeared on a Rolex dive watch, made it instantly the single most popular watch in the modern Rolex inventory. The case is rose gold – Rolex famously makes their own, called Everose, in their own foundry, with a bit of platinum mixed in to prevent discoloration – and the bezel, rather than being some other precious metal (as is the case in the “standard” Yachtmasters) is in black Cerachrom – a very technical-looking matte black that contrasts sharply with the gold case. Somehow, between the rose gold, the Cerachrom bezel, and the new Oysterflex bracelet this manages to be the most luxurious and at the same time most technical Yachtmaster yet (leaving aside the Yachtmaster II, which we recently reviewed right here , but that is a watch that marches to the beat of a different drummer entirely).

The two different versions of the Everose Yachtmaster (40 mm and 37 mm) sport different movements; the larger uses the caliber 3135 and the smaller, the newer 2236, which sports the “Syloxi” silicon balance spring (first used by Rolex in 2014).

The Oysterflex bracelet is, in a nutshell, quite a piece of work. One of the most endearing traits of Rolex as a company is that it tends to demonstrate what we can only describe as a laudable degree of corporate obsessive-compulsive disorder when it comes to research and development, and it does so, often, without making any sort of fanfare about it at all. In this case we do know a little bit about the Oysterflex, however – it is basically designed to have the hypoallergenic and comfort properties of a rubber strap and the durability and shape-retention properties of a bracelet. 

At the core of the Oysterflex bracelet are metal inserts made of titanium and nickel, which are used to affix the bracelet to the clasp and watch case; over those is a sheathing of “high-performance black elastomer.” “Elastomer” is a portmanteau word, formed from “elastic” and “polymer” and is a general term for natural and synthetic rubbers. In addition to the materials complexity of the Oysterflex bracelet, it is also shaped in a rather unusual fashion – there are ridges molded into the the wristward face of the bracelet, which are intended to allow the bracelet when worn to better approximate the natural curvature of the wrist.

They might look a bit odd but in practice, the design works out quite wonderfully; this is easily the most downright comfortable and organic-feeling rubber strap I have ever worn, and like the entire watch manages to be both extremely technical in feel, and very luxurious at the same time; I doubt whether any company has ever taken so much trouble over the design of a strap (for all that Rolex prefers the term “bracelet” in describing the Oysterflex, habit dies hard and you’ll probably find yourself calling it a strap, just as we did). On the wrist, the two stabilizing ridges do exactly what they are supposed to: keep the watch from shifting, as heavier watches on rubber straps are wont to do, without requiring you to have the strap uncomfortably tight. The Everose Oysterlock clasp does a superb job mechanically and also looks fabulous into the bargain; the quality of finish on the clasp and case may not seem terribly elaborate at first, but it is as technically flawless as anything I have ever seen at any price, on any watch.

What we have here, in other words, is a very Rolex interpretation of luxury. Yes, this is a gold watch, and a gold Rolex, and wearing a gold Rolex always carries with it, shall we say, certain semiotic complexities. However there is also another side to the watch, and to the Rolex approach to luxury in general: the taking of such pains to produce technical perfection that technical perfection becomes a luxury in itself.

Chronofinder predictions: New Rolex models at Watches and Wonders 2024

For watch enthusiasts, the most anticipated moment of the year is just a few weeks away. W atches & Wonders is when the most prominent luxury watch brands worldwide, such as Rolex, Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet unveil their latest creations and announce discontinuation.

Among these brands, Rolex consistently commands attention, stirring anticipation in the luxury watch community with its annual releases.

This year, our team at ChronoFinder , a London-based retailer specialising in second-hand luxury watches, has crafted our own concept pieces, speculating on the new Rolex models for 2024.

New Rolex models: The GMT

Since 2018, Rolex has placed significant emphasis on its GMT models, introducing iconic variations known as the ‘Pepsi’, ‘Root Beer’, ‘Batgirl’, and ‘Sprite’. While diversifying the focus across different models would be welcomed, it’s likely Rolex will continue to explore GMT iterations this year.

Rolex is known for its discretion, making predictions challenging. However, recent reports indicate a potential shift hinted by a patent filing for black and red ceramic bezels, possibly signalling a departure from the iconic ‘Pepsi’ design due to production challenges. An iteration featuring a ‘Coke’ bezel reminiscent of older pre-ceramic GMT models could emerge, offering collectors a fresh interpretation of a beloved classic.

These production challenges could also see the discontinuation of the white-gold ‘Pepsi’ GMT. This is the only sports watch left with the spectacular meteorite dial. Each dial is piece unique, made from a solid slice of the Gibeon meteorite, meaning it is quite literally out of this world. Although supply is incredibly scarce due to mining restrictions on the Gibeon meteorite introduced in 2004, we would love to see it introduced on the rose gold ‘Root Beer’ as it is the favourite of our concepts.

Another possibility is a rerelease of the black steel GMT with an updated two-tone bezel on a Jubilee bracelet. Collectors were frustrated after Rolex reintroduced the ‘Batman’ GMT model on an Oyster bracelet in 2021, after previously discontinuing it in 2018. So whilst this addition could diversify the GMT lineup, we hope Rolex instead shifts their focus towards other models.

Steel & rose gold models

At this year’s Watches & Wonders, we would love to see Rolex introduce steel and rose gold options for their Submariner and Sky-Dweller ranges. We imagine the Sky-Dweller would have the same dial options as the full rose gold version. The Submariner could potentially be introduced alongside a full rose gold model, which is something we’d love to see. When the stainless steel ‘Hulk’ was introduced in 2010, it became one of Rolex’s most popular watches, so its introduction in rose gold would take the watch world by storm.

Olive dial rose gold models

First introduced in 2016, the 60th anniversary olive dial Day-Date has been rumoured to be discontinued in recent years. However, this is an incredibly popular colour, so we wouldn’t want to see it be discontinued completely. Rather, we would like to see it introduced with baguette diamond hour markers, offering a luxury twist on the popular model.

We also would love to see the introduction of the olive dial on the rose gold Sky-Dweller. Precious metal Sky-Dwellers have such a high retail price meaning they are often overlooked. However, anybody who has held a Sky-Dweller will understand the level of craftsmanship, engineering, and precision that has gone into making it Rolex’s most complicated timepiece. If this were to be released, we’d expect it to be available on a full bracelet as well as the Oysterflex, giving the Sky-Dweller range a huge boost.

Full rose gold Yachtmaster

This is a model we’ve been hoping to see for a long time. Recent Yachtmaster releases have seen a larger 42mm case size on the white and yellow gold Oysterflex. Last year also saw the groundbreaking release of the full titanium model. Currently selling for over three times its retail price on the second hand market, this incredibly rare timepiece is something that even as a watch trader, I am yet to have the pleasure of seeing in person. The introduction of a full rose gold Yachtmaster would be incredibly popular and also more attainable for collectors than its titanium counterpart.

Ultimately, even for us who are in the industry – it is incredibly difficult, near impossible to predict what Rolex will do next. There is often no rhyme or reason behind what is released, or discontinued and when. None of the watches that you have seen in this article currently exist – although there is no good reason why they should not. At ChronoFinder , we are true luxury watch enthusiasts. It is our passion and our business. We will be waiting in anticipation of this year’s Watches & Wonders, and hope that some of our concepts might come to life.

While the rise in popularity of vintage Rolex watches is of no surprise to aficionados, collectors and industry experts , when it comes to contemporary luxury wristwatches, Rolex is also often the first brand that springs to mind. Not only is the company revered for its precision timekeeping and impeccable craftsmanship, but its name was designed to be memorable.

Rolex's enviable worldwide recognition can be credited in part to the genius of company founder Hans Wilsdorf. When the German-born watch dealer and his brother-in-law, Alfred Davis, set up their London enterprise, in 1905, they called it Wilsdorf & Davis, according to the traditional formula.

But Wilsdorf was determined to come up with another name that was short, would look good on a watch dial and was easy to say and remember in several languages. In 1908, he trademarked the name Rolex, and by 1920, he had moved the company to Geneva and redubbed it as Montres Rolex S.A.

But the main reasons for the brand’s success are its aforementioned commitment to precision and unflagging pursuit of innovation. In 1926, the company introduced the aptly named Oyster model. With a screw-down crown and case back, both fitted with rubber gaskets, this was the first truly waterproof watch.

Five years later, Rolex upped the ante with the Oyster Perpetual . That model’s patented Perpetual movement contained a rotor mechanism enabling it to self-wind. In another trendsetting move, in 1945, the brand debuted the Datejust , with a date window prominently displayed on the dial.

The company’s two most iconic models are sports watches. Although the Submariner , which debuted in 1953, was developed as a dive watch, its waterproof case, solid construction and good looks made it a favorite of adventurers and urbanites alike, including James Bond , who wore it in classics like Dr. No and Goldfinger . The Daytona , the racing chronograph made famous by Paul Newman , is especially sought after by collectors. Newman’s personal Daytona, which hit the auction block in 2017, sold for $17.8 million.

The emblematic watch of the sailing world, the Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 42 is now available in RLX titanium. More than a simple variation, the use of this new, robust and light material required the development of particular industrial techniques, allowing the metal to be manipulated with the utmost care. Advantages proven by Sir Ben Ainslie, renowned skipper and luminary of the SailGP, who tested a Yacht-Master 42 in RLX titanium exclusively created for him, enabling the development of the new version presented in 2023.

RLX titanium is a grade 5 alloy that is lighter than steel and denser than aluminium.

Mastering lightness

Titanium is a surprising metal. The titanium selected by Rolex to manufacture its watches is a grade 5 alloy named RLX titanium. It is both lighter than steel and denser than aluminium, yet harder and more resistant than either of these metals. Its characteristics are so unique that its processing and finishing – particularly the technical satin finish specially developed by Rolex and specific to watches in RLX titanium – required the development of a dedicated industrial process. Using RLX titanium to create the case and bracelet also reduces the weight of the watch by about one-third compared with the same watch in Oystersteel. A major watchmaking feat, marked by the distinctive symbol on the winding crown: a dash surrounded by two dots.

Unprecedented aesthetic balance

The new Yacht-Master 42 stands out with its finishes, a combination of technical satin, high-sheen and polished, proof of Rolex’s know-how in machining and finishing. The three finishes delight the eye with their subtle play on textures and light, contrasting the gleaming polished surface of the crown guard, the lustrous high-sheen on the top edges of the case lugs, and the matt of the technical satin finishing – with its pronounced grain – visible on the case and bracelet. An unprecedented aesthetic balance reinforced by the combination of the RLX titanium’s anthracite grey colour and the matt black colour of the Cerachrom bezel insert in ceramic.

Unparalleled comfort

The new Yacht-Master 42’s Oyster bracelet is also made of RLX titanium. Sporting a technical satin finish extending to the edge of its links and to the sides of the Oysterlock safety clasp’s cover, it is equipped with an Easylink comfort extension link that allows its length to be easily adjusted by about 5 mm. It also includes ceramic inserts inside the links to enhance its flexibility and longevity.

Tested against the elements

In 2021, Sir Ben Ainslie, a four-time Olympic sailing champion, was chosen to test a Yacht-Master 42 specially designed for him. This gentleman skipper competed in the SailGP championship with the only watch of its kind in the world: a Yacht-Master 42 in RLX titanium. By exposing its watches to extreme conditions, Rolex perpetuates the vision of its founder Hans Wilsdorf, who saw the world as a living laboratory in which only extreme testing could provide evidence of a watch’s reliability. A chronometer with superlative precision, made of a material used in high-technology industries, the watch proved to be the perfect ally for the driver of the Great Britain team. Ultralight, robust and extremely corrosion-resistant, it accompanies him on board without hindering any of his movements.
