Olympia Yacht Club

The Olympia Yacht Club was organized in 1889 as the Olympia Motor Boat Club and was reactivated in 1908 with 27 boats. By 1910, ninety members renamed the group the Olympia Yacht Club. By 1915, the club had moorings at the city dock and began leasing the boat basin from the Port of Olympia. OYC opened it’s first clubhouse in 1930, remodeled in 1952 and the present facility was built in 1957. The OYC lighthouse tower at the foot of Simmons street at the caretakers house is a remnant of the 1930's structure.

We stayed using reciprocal privileges. The facilities are excellent. The location is very convenient for the waterfront and farmers market. The dock is reasonably secure. We had a mechanical problem as we attempted to tie up. Club members were extremely helpful, kind and knowledgeable. Within the space of 15 minutes we had two recommendations for local mechanics. Everyone we met was friendly, even the owner of the boat we clipped because of our mechanical problem. We'll definitely be back.

I understand the one star reviews, but i believe things change so i will put 3 stars ti make the difference.

I'm a PhD researcher and author on a road trip. I have to drop off copies of my book at the bookstores who will sell them in California, Oregon, Washington & Vancouver. I have a friend in Olympia that I was going to meet up with but he was late and I don't know the area at all. I have a minivan, it's 20 years old, really ugly and banged up. (I'd have a Tesla if not for student loans LOL) Pulled into the parking lot for less than 20 mins, stayed in my car waiting, doing some work on my computer. There was probably 60 parking spots open, more than half of the lot was empty . I was startled by a woman who slammed on the back window of my car, thinking someone was trying to break in. It was an employee of the yacht club. She realized I was in there and apologized for hitting the window when I opened the door to speak with her. She told me it was a private parking lot and I had to leave before the police or towtruck approaches me. She was relatively nice about it and it might be a part of her job so I don't blame her whatsoever. What I do blame her for is the fact that she only approached the car because the car screams "poor" from the outside. It's a yacht club, I get it, but there are plenty of poor people that have boats. Beware if you have a shitty car or you're notably poor that you might be a victim of predatory towing. People of color and anyone with a shitty car: if you are leaving your car there and you paid for a boat slip, ensure that the office knows the make & model of your car. Even if you've written it down for them, get a verbal confirmation that they have it.

This yacht club is the worst place I have ever kept my boat! It is full of snobs that have too much time on their hands! They spend a majority of their time making the lives of others miserable. The harbor master is the rudest woman I have met in my life and she was nothing but unhelpful! The only good thing about this place is the care taker, and that is the only reason this place has one star! He is a great guy and was always willing to help everyone in the club. My advice is keep your yacht at a different yacht club that will be more welcoming.

Photo of J R.

I completely agree with the other one star review. If you like a snobby people who will stop at nothing to go behind your back and make your life a living hell, than this is the place for your boat. Otherwise, STAY AWAY!!! There are plenty of other places to store your boat around town, the price is not worth it here!

EVENT DETAILS

WHO:  Olympia Yacht Club

WHAT:   Parade of Lighted Ships

WHEN:  Saturday, Dec. 2, beginning at 6 p.m. Sharp

WHERE:  Parade begins from OYC at Percival Landing and heads north past Port Plaza (701 Columbia St NW, Olympia) along the east side of Budd Inlet to Boston Harbor. Boats return to Olympia by 8 p.m. along the west side of Budd Inlet.

VIEWING:   Since many of the boats are decorated only on their starboard/right-hand side, the best viewing as they sail north is from the port area, the tip of the Port Peninsula by Anthony’s Hearthfire restaurant  and KGY Radio, as well as anywhere along East Bay Drive north of Swantown Marina.

On the return trip from Boston Harbor good vantage points include West Bay Drive, West Bay Marina and Tugboat Annie’s.

This festive – and free! – Olympia tradition is a volunteer effort coordinated by OYC members and other participating boaters from South Sound marinas.

COME ONE COME ALL BOATERS!  While OYC sponsors the PARADE OF LIGHTED SHIPS, it’s open to any South Sound decorated boat. All South Sound boaters are welcome & encouraged to participate! Boaters who want to join the Parade should contact OYC's Fleet Captain Power - Mark Herinckx at, [email protected]  to get information and register for the event.

Boaters should also plan to attend a Lighted Ship Captains' meeting at 5:30pm Friday December 1st at Olympia Yacht Club. The decorating theme for the parade is Magical Sleigh Ride on the sea and prizes will be awarded for the Best Sailboat, Best Powerboat, Best of Theme, and Grand Illusion (Judge’s Choice).

The Olympia Yacht Club

Moorage information.

OYC Moorage is exclusively for OYC Members only.  In order to obtain moorage at OYC you must be a current member or you'll need to join OYC.

OYC moorage is based on the total square footage a boat or boathouse would take up. Our current moorage rate is .26 cents per square foot.

For example, a 40' x 12' sailboat would cover about 480 total square feet.  The monthly charge would be approximately 480 x .26 = $124.80.

Moorage rates for boathouses are calculated using the outside dimensions of the boathouse. A boathouse that is 5O'x 15' feet would cover about 750 square feet. The monthly charge would be approximately 750 x .26 = $195.00.

This compares very favorably with other marinas which charge from $8.00 to $10.00 a linear foot.

If moorage is not currently available for a particular size boat when you join TYC, you can get on the moorage waiting list when you join.

Boathouses are privately owned by the members of the yacht club. There are currently several for sale.

For more information please call the Club's Moorage Master at 253-691-9601.

General Membership Meeting

South Sound Sailing Society’s monthly Meetings provide a great opportunity for socializing, making new friends, and expanding your horizon, all with people who share your love of sailing.

SSSS Members meet the second Tuesday of the month, except July and August, at the Olympia Yacht Club, 201 North Simmons. A typical meeting consists of a very short business meeting followed by a program of interest to sailors. In the past, we’ve had top-notch speakers, such as yacht designer Bob Perry and gold-medalist Bill Buchan, as well as top sail makers and world cruisers. We also have educational and entertaining films with topics ranging from America’s Cup highlights to cruising Vancouver Island. To find out about the next General Meeting, check the Calendar.

Visitors are welcome!

The Olympia Yacht Club is located at 201 North Simmons, in Olympia. Doors open 1830 (6:30pm), the meeting starts at 1900 (7:00pm) and usually lasts until about 2100 (9:00 pm).

With the exception of two Meetings, described below, regular meetings typically follow a standard format. The first 30 minutes or so are dedicated to general SSSS business. This is when you’ll learn about upcoming events, provide input to proposed changes in race or other procedures, and generally stay abreast of all that SSSS is involved in. After a brief break to replenish your beverage and finish conversations started before the meeting, the second part of the Meeting begins.

This part of the Meeting is dedicated to presentations from guest speakers. It is highly anticipated, frequently affording standing room only for those who arrive late. Guest presenters are often well-known people from the sailing community who visit SSSS to share their expertise or adventures in racing or cruising or some other aspect of sailing. Other times, the presentation is conducted by one of the Sailing Society’s own members who share interesting adventures or trips.

Within one year, guest presenters included circumnavigator Nancy Erley, sailboat designer Robert Perry, Starpath Navigation School founder David Birch, cruising author Migel Scherer, master rigger Brion Toss, the Budd Bay Chantey Singers, and SSSS’s own Ken Russell. Guest presenters are arranged by the Member-at-Large, who solicits input from members as to speakers and topics of interest. The caliber of speakers and presentations draws many South Sound Sailing Society members to the Meetings, which enhances the overall social and networking aspects of the Meeting.

Twice a year, SSSS substitutes its traditional meeting format for food and celebration. The December Meeting is occasion for a holiday potluck. The June Meeting is a great excuse for a barbecue potluck and awards ceremony. SSSS members are fantastic cooks and these potlucks are a terrific opportunity to simply visit with sailing friends old and new. Look for details of these potlucks in the Ship-to-Shore.

Parking for the General Meeting

Only members of OYC can park in the lot directly in front of the OYC building. There is ample parking along the nearby streets and in the city parking lot across the street, both of which are free after 5:00 PM.
