Labuan Town Food Guide: 10 Must-Eat Restaurants & Street Food Stalls in Labuan Town

Victoria (Malaysian pronunciation: [vikˈtɔriˈa]) or Victoria Town (Malay: Bandar Victoria) is the capital of the Federal Territory of Labuan in Malaysia, an island group off the north coast of Borneo. It is located in the southeast corner of Labuan and its Malay name, "Bandar Labuan" is more commonly used by the locals than Victoria. The town is an urban district within the wider city limits of Victoria which includes Labuan Port, a sheltered deep-water harbour which is an important trans-shipment point for Brunei Darussalam, northern Sarawak and western Sabah. I’ve written good reviews about this restaurant and in fact had recommended it to friends. Today I need to share my latest experience: We came and occupied an unreserved table. Usually a waiter or waitress would immediately attend to our table to take order. But surprisingly that evening nobody came. I rose and came to the place where fresh fish is stored and tried to call a waiter/waitress but nobody came. Tried the payment counter but can’ get attention too. Spoke to a waitress to call the captain to take our order, no response. So after sitting down for some time, we decided to move out and went to another restaurant where we were welcomed and our food order taken.

While preparing for my recent trip to Labuan I was surprised by the scarcity of information on the island. Luckily, there was no lack of eating places here. But the one which caught my eye was the Blue Whale Coffee House which sports a cute logo of (what else??) a whale. It occupies the corner lot on the ground floor of the building and is a short walk away from the Labuan ferry terminal. Just the place for breakfast or lunch since it opens at 9am and closes at 5pm. Most importantly it is clean, bright, airy yet quiet; very conducive for a spot of conversation and relaxing over a cup of Hainan teh tarik (RM3.00) or Segafredo’s best coffee latte (RM5.50). My husband and I love to try local dishes on our travels and the Blue Whale offers a bewildering array of tempting choices. We asked the affable owner, Bryan to introduce us his house specialties (normally a safe option). His suggestions of Sambal fried beehoon (RM7.50) and Singapore fried mee (RM7.50) met with our hearty approval. Both dishes were well cooked, not overly oily and very tasty. But we expected nothing less since the cook was none other than the owner’s wife and a certified chef to boot. There were several dishes on the menu that looked interesting but we were already full and we had a ferry to catch. Perhaps if we pass this way again….? Tip: Get Bryan to tell you the location of the best satay stall in Labuan, maybe Malaysia !

Heard lots of good review and recommendations. Came here and ordered prawn, fish, vege and seafood food. Prawn served are pretty small and taste is just OK. Fish taste is OK. Nothing much to brag about. No live fish in tank to be chosen. Will not return if there is better dining place. Paid RM76 for the above dishes, fit for 2 persons.

Always good green seafood selection, from fish, prawns, crab and shell fish, like scallops. Reasonable and probably best price in Labuan. Ambience is basic chinese coffee shop style restaurant, then again you're there for the seafood. The Slipper shrimps or "Satak" local name, best in set fried. This time the drunken prawns was over cooked, a shame.

When in Labuan your choices are rather restricted and for a place serving decent quality food this place fits the bill. Whilst located in the Tiara Hotel itself which is very ordinary the restaurant caters for small to larger dinner sessions You need a car to get here or a taxi so factor that into account. Beyond that worth a try.

Located inside Tiara Labuan Hotel, The Grill doubles up as the hotel's 24hrs coffee house. The menu is huge with a blend of local, asian and western fare. The Tiara Laksa is the arguably the best Sarawak Laksa available in Labuan. The Hainan chicken rice which came highly recommended, was pretty decent but I found the rice to be a little too mushy. Other dishes we had was: 1. Nasi Goreng Kampung - Fried rice served with a fried egg, satay on skewers, fried chicken & prawn cracker. Overall taste was good but the chicken was over fried & bone dry 2. Seafood Tom Yam - The seafood was fresh but the tom yum soup tasted rather average 3. Prawns & Scallop - 2 giant prawns & 2 medium sized scallops served along with jacket potato, corn on the cob, cauliflower & canned button mushrooms. The prawn was frozen and not live/fresh while the jacket potato had no dressing (ie. Sour cream, bacon bits etc). But other than that, a pretty tasty treat 4. Deep Fried Mushroom - Tasted a bit weird because they used canned button mushrooms instead of fresh ones like swiss brown, white button or portobello 5. OX Tail Soup - Very tasty soup with a generous chunks of tail bone & meat 6. Deep Fried Soft Shell Crab - Soft shell crabs deep fried till crispy. Delicious but a tad too oily 7. Lamb Shoulder - 3 huge chunks of lamb served with fries, vegetables, canned button mushrooms & corn on the cob. The lamb was pretty good, juicy and tasty but the portion was just too huge for one person's consumption 8. Sirloin Steak - Ordered medium well and was served medium. Taste was good but texture was not impressive as it was coarse 9. Fillet Mignon - Served with sliced canned button mushrooms, mashed potato & a toast. Ordered medium well and was served almost well done so the meat was coarse, dry and flaky Overall, The Grill serves up a pretty decent asian or local fare but falls short on the western fare. So order the correct food and enjoy the lovely ambience both indoor or alfresco. A good point to note as well that the price starts from as low as RM10+ for an asian dish, all the way up to RM220 for the wagyu steak. Also, the serving portion here is huge and definitely a good value for money. For people with small appetite, order one serving and share.

Mawilla Yacht Club Restaurant

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

A lovely view out over the ocean is a great draw card for this restaurant . Seafood is fresh and you can pick exactly what you want and the chefs will cook it. Drinks are cold and cheap making a very reasonably priced experience. In... the two times we have visited this restaurant the service has not been perfect but is by no means extremely slow or poor. If you're looking for a nice spot to have lunch or spend a few hours in the evening then look no further. More

I have eaten at this place a few times. Service is like a military canteen; abysmal. But the seafood was OK and once it was even good. The view is nice as it perches over the ocean. Not a great place to eat when it... is raining, since it is outdoors and not at all well covered at the corners. Also it can be quite packed in the evenings, so reservations are highly recommended. There are not many places to eat nearby so this probably explains how the place stays in business. More

Great view & great food. The seafood here are really fresh, cooking method is not bad and the environment here is really nice. Sea side restaurant, nice...

My friends and I went to Labuan on the first day of Hari Raya and most of the restaurants were closed. We went to Labuan to unwind, drink and eat seafood. Luckily, Mawilla was opened on that day. There's nothing special about it, but, if... you want a nice sea view and cool air, and dine out with your friends and drink beer, this is a good place. Location is good because it is near to the sea and there is enough parking space. People who want to smoke after eating can do so in this restaurant. More

Although basic in design, the food was good and reasonable in price. The open breeze was a bonus. Only downside was the condition of the toilet. Needs serious improvement.

The food is good, price is cheaper but the worker is dreaming i think. The food take sooo long time to prepare (for BBQ section), we ate finish others dishes but our bbq fish yet reach. Asking 2 times told us the strong wind so it's... might take some time. haha. What a lame excuse. Basicly the forgotten our fish, i saw the fish put on the counter for so long....at last i cancel the fish order. More

Food was marvellous and fresh. Ask the waiter/waitress, their recommendation or what seafood is fresh. They are open for lunch and dinner but better to go during dinner so as to enjoy the sea breeze.

The location is unsurpassed but the place tired, the food is very good if you are prepared to overlook the lack lustre service and out dated facilities. What a shame - with an overhaul, maybe a change of ownership or management, the place could be... a star. Our wait staff lost interest when we didn't make up our minds immediately: no lingering with recommendations or explanations of how to order. The fish is fresh, from a tank and presumably good, but when we deliberated over the cost - which was high, the waiter turned tail. It was hard not to be distracted from the lovely view by the a pile of the yellow satin tablecloths being lazily folded by the plentiful staff, another washing dishes in a broken down sink in the room and a lot of talking amongst themselves. The customer is not king here, the food could be and the location is.. More

pick your fish, crab, what ever and they cook it. Open area on beach and they also have cold beer that can be served with food, Large selection of sea food and well prepared.

We arrived just after 0600pm. Therefore we had a great choice from the menu and seating. We selected bugs, soft shell crabs and a rather large white fish. The food was cooked exactly right. The fish had been coated in prawn paste and chilli, bugs... and crab were cooked with a little sweet chilli which did not take over the wonderful seafood flavour. We ordered a bucket of beer. The food and setting was perfect. More

Feeling like eating seafood? Look no further. Mawilla restaurant is THE place when you are in Labuan island. Nive view too. Do make a reservation earlier to avoid being disappointed.

Lovely food that you can enjoy right next to the beach. The prawns were incredible and the waitress gave us recommendations.

Very disappointed.. Crab meat totally sucks. All deep fried which I personally not my preference 😅 Luckily Satak is nice

The deliciously-prepared seafood we enjoyed was very fresh (it was on display as we entered the restaurant). We had prawns, crayfish, beef, chicken, as well as vegetables. Most dishes had a Malay-Chinese flavoring. There was a nice view of and breeze from the ocean.

Restaurant is located right beside the sea and opening in PM hours ( around 18:00). Usually is fully booked and need to come early if you wish to get a seat - specaily if you want to seat on terrace where you can admire beautiful... sunset while eatind excellent fresh seq food which you choose straight from small wookden boat lying infornt of restaurant ( which is of course part of it). I would recommend red snaper, king prawns, grouper, or their local prawns - called "satak". The only thing which is a bit oldish is furniture ( tables and seats are plastic). if i would owned such a restaurant on place like this one- I would definitely renovate it on a higher level of confort. The "Yacht Club" title is a major misnomer, it's just a rustic, basic chalet-type place, right on the beach not far from the town. A good spot though, fresh seafood and other Chinese dishes, beer and wine and it's all pretty cheap. Probably my favourite spot for dinner in Labuan but gets a bit busy, particularly at weekends. Try to reach it before sunset so you can take in the view out to sea. I think there's an indoor aircon room but it's breezy outside normally and that's where I head for.

After reading good reviews on this place, I decided to bring my family for dinner. We arrived at 7+pm and the place was already packed but we managed to get ourselves seated on a table that has been yet to be cleared. Service was awfully slow as if the restaurant was understaffed. Being pressured to work, staff were not friendly towards us or our request to clear the table or take our food orders. 80% of the seafood for selection was not fresh (crabs were FROZEN!) and we were reaaally disappointed that the stingrays were finished and will not be restocked (as told by the staff). But we saw other tables being served bbq stingrays later! We did however enjoyed our bbq fish which was surprisingly fresh. Their bitter gourd fried with salted duck egg was quite uniquely done as well. Might try to come early if we visit next time and give them a second chance on their other seafood selection.

Although basic in design, the food was good and reasonable in price. The open breeze was a bonus. Only downside was the condition of the toilet. Needs serious improvement.

We had a great seafood meal there. The restaurant was rather plain but the view over the waterfront and beach was good. We had Lobster and King Shrimps in garlic butter, delicious.

Reviving classic Russian cuisine

Oct 19 2018.

mawilla yacht club restaurant menu

Roads & Kingdoms talks to Russian chef Vladimir Mukhin of Moscow’s super-restaurant, White Rabbit.

Still in his mid-30’s, Vladimir Mukhin is already one of Russia’s best known chefs and the leading culinary light of the White Rabbit Group, which has 16 restaurants around the country. The most well-known of these, Moscow’s  White Rabbit , was named one of the 50 best restaurants in the world last year. Roads & Kingdoms’ Nathan Thornburgh talked to Mukhin in Moscow about being a fifth-generation chef, reviving classic Russian cuisine, and finding good product in the age of embargoes.

Nathan Thornburgh: Tell me about White Rabbit, what is the food? What are you trying to accomplish there?

Vladimir Mukhin: The White Rabbit is a big restaurant. We’re trying to revive Russian cuisine. I’m a fifth-generation chef, so I’m passionate about the food we create. During the Soviet Union period, we killed Russian food. Classic Russian recipes became too simplified. For example, usually you drink tea, but if you want to be, just to be creative, want to make the tea with milk, you can’t. It would be like stealing milk from the government. People went to jail.

When I was growing up, I remember my grandfather coming to the kitchen and crying because he couldn’t experiment with his food.

Thornburgh: Wow. I remember this famous photo session with Che Guevara which came up with some of his best pictures, maybe two incredible iconic portraits came from an entire roll of film, and the photographer went to him and showed him this roll of film and Che said, What the hell are you doing? You wasted all of these images. You took 30 pictures to get one? That’s the government’s film. It’s a similar mentality.   So you’re telling the story of a kind of cuisine that was lost on the Soviet history and now you’re playing with this idea of finding it again. What does your process look like? Do you get as many grandmothers as you can round up and just kind of shake recipes out of them? How were you doing this?

Mukhin: I just try to work with as many local farmers and producers as I can, so we can use as many Russian ingredients as we can.

Thornburgh: So this is a close relationship.

Mukhin: Yes. I traveled throughout Russia—not just the big cities, but also the villages to talk with older people.

Thornburgh: You know I think people don’t understand the vastness of Russia, and how big it’s collection of cultures and languages and cuisines is. What parts of the country influences your food?

Mukhin: I’m inspired by the whole country. It’s a big territory, and sometimes it feels like it’s too big. I try and use different techniques and ingredients from all over the country, which I think makes my menus distinct.

We have an a la carte menu with about 50 dishes of classical Russian food. Everything looks modern because I’m a young chef. But if you close your eyes and try these dishes, you’ll taste 100% classic Russian flavors.

I want to highlight all aspects of Russian cuisine. Before the Olympic Games in Sochi, we opened a restaurant there, not just to make money, but to expose people visiting for the Olympics to Russian food. That’s why we opened The Red Fox restaurant. It’s all about Russian ingredients.

Thornburgh: Sochi, at least when I’ve been there, is like a Miami Beach. It’s like a place to get pizza and sushi, and go to the nightclubs.

Mukhin: You been?

Thornburgh: Yeah.

Mukhin: It’s crazy.

Thornburgh: It’s a little crazy, but it’s interesting to bring in Red Fox and sort of say okay, because people are coming out, let’s bring Russia to Sochi.

Mukhin: It was incredible. We had thousands of visitors at the restaurant.

Thornburgh: So you really looked internally for inspiration. Did working outside of Russia motivate you to focus on Russian cuisine?

Mukhin: Yes. I spent time working in Avignon, France. I worked with Christian Etienne, and he would make a special Russian meal once a year.  It was crazy.

mawilla yacht club restaurant menu

Thornburgh: How was the food?

Mukhin: It was shit. I told him that I would cook real Russian food for him, and I did. I cooked borscht, blinis, and other classics. He liked it and said that once a year we should use my recipes, but with his influence. I agreed, and we went on to make amazing food. Eventually, I wanted to come back to my motherland. So I left and I started working on making White Rabbit a reality.

Thornburgh: When people go to White Rabbit, what are they going to find?

Mukhin: Someone once told me that there is a new Russian cuisine and an old Russian cuisine. I think Russian cuisine is going through an evolution. So I hope people will come and see evolution at White Rabbit.

Thornburgh: Great. Always good to end on an invite. Thank you.

Mukhin: Thank you so much.

Restaurant SIXTY

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

The food was okay and the service was pleasant however it was not as good or as memorable as the other restaurants that we dined at whilst visiting Moscow. The restaurant itself was beautiful and the view was still impressive despite it being a cloudy... day. It had a nice atmosphere but we were quite cold! It's not a place that I would return to in a hurry. More

This restaurant is NOT for couples on a romantic date. The music is too loud, the people watching is too distracting, the interiors are wowing, and the views command abandoning one's table in a rash to snap that one more perfect photo. The visit starts... with a lush lobby and a high speed lift that takes you up 62 floors in a swoosh. Ears still clogged, you are greeted by gorgeous welcome girls who escort you to your table in a huge hall cleverly divided into intimate cosy zones, all surrounded by floor to ceiling windows and a glass ceiling. Despite the sanctions imposed by Russia on foreign food imports, only 3 items were not available on the extensive menu: buffalo mozzarella, asparagus and foir gras. I am appalled by the reviewer who chose a burger from the menu. Seafood hot starters could be a meal in themselves: Wasabi grilled prawns, crab legs and other shell fish are superb in freshness, taste and presentation. Salads have fresh and crispy greens (where do they come from?) and delicate dressing. The mains include, just to name a few, all usual cuts of beef, rack of lamb, black cod, australian baramundi, halibut. The service was superb, one meal followed another seamlessly. The waitress had little English but menu contains English and we had no difficulties at all. The wine list has great choices served properly. People watching was fun. The restaurant had probably the highest concentration of gorgeous russian women under one roof, which proved a bit distracting to some of our party. Every half hour or so, the restaurant will turn up the music which is a sign that they are about to open the windows exposing the most spectacular views of Moscow. It's quite exciting and provides a welcome wave of fresh cool air. In conclusion, the food and service are superb, the atmosphere is fantastic, the views are spectacular - an absolute must in Moscow. Very good service and indeed having good food and atmosphere. The only thing I can criticize is the size of the raw oysters, just a bit disappointed. But overall, fantastic experience!

Don't go to Sixty. The reception was rude. When we got seated they said, we can only have the table for one and a half hours, the food is too expensive to be told that. Service is awful, we got served a little bit of... water in the beginning, and that was it. The waiter never came by and asked if we wanted more. Luckily I brought some water myself, so I survived my stay here. It was also not possible to book a table over the phone for lunch, which is weird. There was also a camera lady forcing us to take a picture. We said no, but she insisted on taking a photo and didn't tell us what she needed it for, we assumed it was for their Instagram. She even asked us to stand up and move more together while we just had received our food. We told her no, but she did not understand. After a while, she left, but she managed to take one picture of us while we were sitting down, and after lunch was over, she came back and asked if we wanted to buy a framed photo she had taken of us. We said no thanks. I'm happy I didn't go here in the evening because it would have completely ruined my evening. I don't recommend this place. More

There are a tables near the windows, but it's impossible to reserve these tables in advance. It's so strange, because if I book a table in advance I'd like to have a choice and garantee the table near the window with view to Moscow. Why... do I need a reservation at all? We booked a table and came to the restaraunt 30 min.later than the table was booked. Hostes said that our reservation was cancelled because of our late visit. They didn't call us and didn't ask us to confirm our visit. It's Moscow, a lot of traffic jams and it's impossible to be in time. And the last one- there is no table in non-smoking place. Many people smoke during the dinner and other guests have to smell this. The restaraunt should have tables for non-smoking people! There should be a choice! This restaraunt was much better when it was opened 2 years ago (I visited it in august 2011). Now it has become much worse! It seems like night club. not restaraunt. More

I went to this restaurant hoping for a nice Borsch with a good view of Moscow city, but was rather disappointed with the usher. Left me in the central area and there was no one who attended to me despite having been there for a... good 15 mins or so. I decided to leave the restaurant soon after. Food can be fantastic, view can be fantastic but bad service just drives your customer away! More

Crooked restaurant. Very bad. Forget it. Definitely. Noisy, impossible to have a conversation. Bad service. They even do not consider ladies, they are not served first... My dish was cold when served. At the end of your dinner they are asking you cash first for... paying the bill and then if you cannot pay with cash they are asking you for a black or gold credit card instead and if you cannot provide it they charge you 10% more... More

We've celebrated my wife's birthday there. I specifically mentioned this in the order and loudly declared this once more when we've arrived (it was Friday, 15.01.2016). No Birthday cake and/or song for us. I've specifically told the waiter once more before we've order the desert.... No result. Awful. Furthermore, we've being promised a discount on my premium (platinum) Mastercrad, but instead we've being over-charged for USD 50!!! Unfortunately we didn't keep the bill (check) - our mistake. And now we cannot even claim the fraud. Awful!!! More

My girlfriend and I decided to try out the "famous" sixty restaurants. Actually I could never complain about reatauranrs of the Ginza chain. Usually they would have friendly, more or less skilled and especially English speaking waiters. This general rule obviously does not apply on... Sixty. The restaurant itself is really beautiful, we liked the interior design, the view and just the overall setting. The waiters in there though are just worse than peasants. We had around 5 different waiters serving us, constantly switching and not knowing about what the other one is doing. Instead of sending an English speaking waiter to our table, we had someone not speaking a single word, just taking to my girlfriend in Russian, and not giving me the feeling of being involved in any way. There was not only a lack of language skills, but also a lack of any kind of education. This person was the worst waiter I have had for a while. I asked for extra wasabi when our sushi came and the wasabi arrived when the sushi was gone, the 2nd order of drinks arrived after we were done with dinner for a long time. He was not smiling, not charming, not good looking, not caring about his customers at all,b just overall the lowest performance of a waiter. I've been eating in a lot of high class restaurants all over the world and I am absolutely willing to pay a lot of money if I get a return on my investment. I feel myself capable to judge that sixty is just overrated and overpriced for what you get. The service is worth nothing at all. The food is just average with too high prices. The crowd visiting that place is almost as bad as the waiters. It is full of wannabe new rich thugs, who would not even be allowed to enter a restaurant in Paris the way they look and behave. So all in all I can only say it is a palace full of peasants More

Actually the dinner was fine. And we are normally good spenders. But: 1) the waiter tries to sell you the most expensive food and much much more than what you really can eat 2) we paid more than USD 240 per person and we asked... for a vodka after the bill and we had to pay again for it. 3) And, sincerely, Mr Novikov, is unacceptable to put a person who doesn’t speak english at the concierge. We had to use google translator to get a damned taxi after 30 minutes!!! I UNDERSTAND WHY IT WAS ALMOST EMPTY ON FRIDAY... More

Pre-booked a table by the window to enjoy the view from 60th floor. Upon arrival the staff impolitely denied having made such a reservation. Very bad start of the evening. This is disappointing, since the view is really the main attraction here. Food is decent,... service is medium, despite plenty plenty of staff, and hence a somewhat overpriced experience. One can see that a lot of attention is paid on presentation. Starters were nice, but portions are merely samples. Fish was overcooked, decently presented. The wine list is short and grossly overpriced, which is - unfortunately - not unusual in Moscow. Overall, Sixty was a somewhat disappointing experience! More

Worst restaurant ever!!! Service was terrible, no English spoken and food never arrived!!! They didn't care about us at all because they didn't understand. Moscow has better places!!!

The first we want to sorry about the “worst dinner”. We will immediately solve the problem with service and no English spoken waiters. Thank you for your review, we have to know all the problems to become better every day.

Bad and slow service, so so food, arrogant staffs. If you like a combination of these 3 qualities then step this way. To be considered only as a place to take photos and then leave immediately elsewhere. The staffs could not care less about quality... of services but are more than ready to check on the way you dress up for the occasion. My suggestion: order one drink, take photos and go elsewhere for real delicious dinner or lunch. Moscow has a lot more to offer than this place. More

Most of this has been said before on this site, but it's worth reiterating just how awful this place is. Yes, the view and the decor are great but the positives are far outweighed by the negatives. The door staff are spectacularly rude. It was... clear that even though we had a reservation they didn't think we were fabulous enough to eat there. Our waiter was totally inept. We waited 45 minutes for our drinks, our starters and mains all came together, and, after we sent out mains back because we wanted to eat our starters first, the same mains came back later on when we were ready for them, stone cold. They hadn't even bothered to reheat them. We sent them back again and complained to the manager. By way of an apology he brought us some free desserts - only we hadn't eaten our mains at that point. The whole evening was a total farce and not cheap either. This restaurant may not be extremely expensive by Moscow standards but for £100.00 a head the food simply isn't good enough and the service is unforgivable. AVOID! More

Nice location with perfect views to Moscow city and Moscow. What is bad you can not reserve by phone a table if want one to be close to windows. You have to reserve, visit them for deposit and then come again for dinner/lunch. The food... is average and Ginza has much simple locations with much more better food. So this is mainly a place to visit for views. More
