Excellent info to multi hull systems

Great course, good tips about safety

Great insight.

Pointing out the excellence and safety issues with cats. I had a 43-foot one for 8 years and miss it a lot.

I've chartered big cats twice but I didn't know the trick to get the bow to pass through the wind easily until I took this course. That alone was worth the price of the course. Very cool!

Good for understanding the basics!

Sailing a cat is definitely different from sailing a monohull. This course walks you through the differences and prepares you for your first experience with a cat. That being said, it is not a substitute for hands on and time on task. You have to get on a cat and practice to become proficient at handling a cat both under sail and power.

As an experienced monohull sailor, I found this to be right on point. The maneuvering session was extremely helpful and the simulations instructive. The information about sail loads and dangerous situations was new to me: I am very glad I got to go through this before my charter.

Very good testing approach

Veoma profesionalan i koristan kurs Very professional course

Informative, fun to read

Excerpt from the course

And if there weren't enough advantages to sailing a catamaran here is another.

The mainsail traveler on a catamaran is significantly longer than on a cruising monohull. Thus you can take real advantage of this. The mainsail can now be adjusted in 2 different ways: using the traveler line or by adjusting the mainsheet.

When sailing close hauled on a catamaran in heavier air, move the traveler upwind (on the opposite side of the sail) and let off on the main sheet. This will allow the boom to rise a little and "twist out" the top of the sail. Twisting the sail out "deflates" the top of the sail and should be done in the case of slightly stronger winds. In light air, make sure that the top of the mainsail is not “losing air” meaning, keep the traveler close to the center and tighten the mainsheet to make sure the main cannot open up at the top.

As soon as the breeze kicks up, bring your traveler up a bit more and ease the mainsheet so that the boom does not come past the center point.

traveler

Once out sailing you'll be able to dispel one of the biggest "myths" surrounding catamarans because modern cats actually do point pretty well!!

The flatter the water, the better they will point and it'll be possible to sail in the high 30s degrees off the wind if your cat has the genoa tracks up on the coach roof, you will have a nice tight sheeting angle allowing you to go upwind comfortably.

As soon as you bear away from the wind slightly, you will want to bring the mainsail traveler down to leeward and start easing the mainsail (similar to a monohull).

I enjoy the friendship of quite a few sailors. I don't hesitate to recommend your Nauticed courses to them. The main value of the courses are that it provides a platform on which one anticipates scenarios at sea. Prior thinking and planning is key to safety in my view. Paul L- Australia , Student

10 Best Catamarans for 2023

course catamaran 2023

Table of Contents

Catamarans have taken the boating world by storm, becoming the fastest-growing segment, with both sail and power cats dominating the market. Some of the best catamarans have been launched in the past 12 months! Let us introduce you to five power catamarans and five sail multihulls, and then let us get you on the water with one! Here are the ten best catamarans for 2023 :

  • World Cat 260 CCX
  • Four Winns TH36
  • Leopard 40 PC
  • Aquila 42 PC
  • HammerCat 45
  • Fountaine Pajot Tanna 47
  • Bali 4.4

Power Catamarans:

World cat 260 ccx.

world-cat-260cc-x-18

The sixth model in the builder’s center console line , the World Cat 260 CCX , is compact but packed with features, including a wraparound U-lounge for relaxing or casting, a 30-gallon live well, a 120-quart insulated fish box and twin 200-hp outboards that draw on 180 gallons of fuel. This is a small but serious fishing machine.

Four Winns TH36

Four Winns TH36

The new Four Winns TH36 is the first outboard-powered catamaran introduced by the builder. The dual console design has a walkthrough windshield and room for 15 or more guests. Power is provided by twin 300-hp outboards upgradeable to 350s, making this runabout speedy and fun.

Leopard 40 PC

Leopard 40 PC

Joining her 46- and 53-foot siblings, the new Leopard 40 PC is a couple’s cruiser with many of the same features as the two larger models but on a much smaller (and for some, more approachable) platform. Engine packages range from 250 hp to 370 hp, and a top speed of 20 knots is expected.

Aquila 42 PC

Aquila 42 PC

The new 42 falls in the middle of the Aquila range and offers two staterooms, multiple sunbeds, a utility cabin , and numerous layout configuration options. She has engines from Volvo Penta and a spacious flybridge with steps that lead directly down to the foredeck for easy maneuvering.

HammerCat 45

HammerCat 45

The new HammerCat 45 is versatile and can work as a sportfish platform, a dive boat, a day cruiser, or a superyacht tender. This center console has a hardtop and a Carolina bow and is built in epoxy and carbon fiber to keep weight down and performance up. Expect a 55- knot top end and a 30-knot cruise depending on the engine package selected.

Sailing Catamarans:

Fountaine pajot tanna 47.

Fountaine Pajot Tanna 47

This French-built sailing cruiser has space in spades. The new FP Tanna 47 is based on (and shares a hull design with) her predecessor, the Saona 47, but clever tweaks have made this a whole new boat. The cabin house and deck have been revamped, the flybridge is 40% larger, the salon/ galley has gained storage options, and the helm is more ergonomic than before.

Bali 4.4

Video Source: bali-catamarans.com

Bali has captured the hearts of sailors who love lots of living space, large household-style appliances, and simplicity. Bali cats are unique for their combination salon/ cockpit layout, and the 4.4 joins her siblings in this groundbreaking design. With the touch of a button, a “garage door” lifts, connecting the indoors with the outdoors with minimum redundancy in living arrangements.

balance 442

Fast and packed with proven cruising features, the Balance 442 is the little sister to last year’s 482. Perfectly sized for couples, this boat was designed for distance cruisers by distance cruisers. There’s even an option for a large solar array to make living at anchor easy and just about carbon neutral.

Lagoon 55

French catamaran builder, Lagoon, has introduced a new VPLP-designed cruising cat that you can test in charter soon. The Lagoon 55 slots just above the newly introduced 51and are offered as a large and comfortable flybridge model with up to six cabins to accommodate an overnight crowd.

Minicat 310

Minicat 310

Not all cats are of the large, expensive fiberglass variety. An affordable multihull can be had in Europe’s Minicat 310 Sport, an inflatable beach cat weighing only 77 pounds and packing down into a single bag. This cat has sophisticated big boat features like roller furling, a fully battened mainsail, keels, and an attachment for a small outboard.

2023 Boat of the Year: Best Cruising Multihull

  • By CW Editorial Team

The trend toward cruising multihulls continues unabated, and perhaps has even come full circle. The popularity of boats with more than one hull, especially catamarans , is more evident with each passing year in charter fleets, on boat-show docks, and in far-flung anchorages the world over. The multihull genie is out of the bottle, and there’s no evidence it will ever return. That reality was once again underlined in the 2023 Boat of the Year trials , where the Cruising Multihull class, with five legitimate contenders, was certainly among the strongest categories. Particularly notable this year was the dominance of French builders, which makes sense because the country has been the leading proponent of production-built multihulls from the beginning. It’s fitting that one of those pioneering firms topped the field for 2023: Well done, Fountaine Pajot.

Winner: Fountaine Pajot, Fountaine Pajot Tanna 47

Tanna 47

This category was stacked with previous winners. In fact, every builder in the class had earned a BOTY victory in earlier editions of the event. But in both the dockside inspections and under sail, the Fountaine Pajot Tanna 47 rang a bell for our panelists.

“I believe this is my favorite Fountaine Pajot model of all time,” judge Herb McCormick says. “The size and dimensions are ideal: It’s a big cat but not overwhelming. A big reason is the helm station, with dedicated pods for driving, and the sailhandling. And, holy cow, it really sailed well.”

Judge Mark Pillsbury also appreciates the smart deck layout, as well as the corresponding systems: “With plenty of solar panels, a watermaker and more-than-ample refrigeration space, the Tanna 47 was set up really well for cruising and living aboard. On a beam reach in 13 knots of breeze, we scooted along at 7 to 8 knots, and I liked the setup of the helm, with the wheel being separated slightly from the winches. The boat was easy to sail solo, but there was room for the crew to jump in and help when they wanted to.”

Finalist: Balance Catamarans, Balance 442

Balance 442

The lone South African cat entry for 2023, the Balance 442 continued the excellence we’ve come to expect from the builder, and is a worthy successor to the company’s 482 , which was named Best Performance Catamaran for 2022 .

Pillsbury offers this summation: “Many of today’s popular catamarans are built to appeal to a wide audience composed of private owners and charter companies. Phil Berman and the team at Balance take a different approach, by building boats for experienced owners who plan to live aboard and go places. That translates into seakindliness, solid sailing performance, and comfortable accommodations that will keep a crew rested and ready at anchor or underway. Personal favorites: the visibility from the raised helm station, and the farm-kitchen-style deep sink and dish-drying racks in the galley. Nice touches.”

Finalist: Groupe Beneteau, Lagoon 55

Lagoon 55

This rangy cat will find plenty of happy sailors in private ownership and on charter vacations. Judge Ed Sherman says that the performance under power jumped out: “A record-setter for its motoring capabilities this year at 8.9 knots at 2,000 rpm and 9.4 knots at 2,500 rpm. Quiet too. In both cases, our decibel tests came in at less than 70.”

The sailing characteristics impress Pillsbury: “The Lagoon 55 is a big boat, probably close to the limit of what can be handled by a family or crew of friends off on a charter vacation. But the designers and builder have done a good job of setting up a helm station on the flybridge that’s workable for a shorthanded crew. All lines lead to winches near the wheel, and an autopilot and bow thruster provide extra hands when it comes time to maneuver. With multiple interior layouts, the 55 can be configured to fit the needs of a wide variety of owners.”

Finalist: Nautitech Catamarans, Nautitech 44 Open

Nautitech 44 Open

With its twin wheels situated aft and outboard, the peppy Nautitech 44 Open is thrilling to drive, with its quickness and performance. “I always say that you need daggerboards to have truly great sailing on a cat, but this sweet 44-footer, with its fixed keels, certainly disproved that opinion,” McCormick says. “It really zipped along and was a blast to steer.”

Pillsbury is of the same mind: “After our sail aboard the Nautitech, I jotted down ‘sporty’ in my notes. The helm seats, set outboard and aft on each of the cat’s hulls, kept me connected with the water rushing by, and a versatile sail plan that includes a self-tacking jib, screecher and spinnaker gave us options to keep boatspeeds in the high single digits—and higher in the puffs—on all points of sail.”

Finalist: Neel Trimarans, Neel 43

Neel 43

The three-hull outlier in our category of mostly cats, the Neel 43 presents a real alternative for those who want the speeds and space that a multihull can deliver. “This boat is truly different,” Sherman says. “It’s slippery through the water, either sailing or under engine power. System access in the center hull is wonderful and well done too. With a single 50 hp Volvo Penta saildrive, we measured 8.2 knots at only 2,200 rpm and 8.4 knots at 2,700 rpm.”

Pillsbury enjoyed the entire Neel experience, and says: “Neel’s creator, Eric Bruneel, described the boat as a fast cruiser, and by that he meant an owner on passage could expect to sail in the 9- to 10-knot range, routinely enjoying 200-plus-mile days. After my turn on the wheel, I sneaked inside to check out the view from the owner’s cabin, nestled atop the starboard hull. I could have stayed all afternoon.”

Our customers' reviews of this boat

4,3 · 6 reviews

Fast Track® to Cruising

An offshore sailing school learn to cruise course exclusive, sailing certification courses on monohull cruising yachts for beginners and small boat sailors, couch to captain’s chair in one week.

When Offshore Sailing School started to teach cruising courses in the early 1980s, only monohull sailboats were commonly used for cruising.  “Learning on a large monohull is absolutely thrilling,” says Doris Colgate, Offshore’s co-owner and avid cruising sailor who was inducted into the National Sailing Hall of Fame in 2022.  The Fast Track® to Cruising course on 44′-50′ monohulls taught at all Offshore Sailing School locations, provides the ultimate experience managing a large yacht in all weather and sea conditions. In recent years, the Offshore Sailing School catamaran cruising course has gained popularity because those boats appeal to sailors who want more space on deck and inside to hang out. For a complete description and photos of learning on a catamaran, please visit Fast Track® to Catamaran Cruising course.

Don’t be fooled by copy-cats trying to trade on the Offshore Sailing School brand and trademarks. There is only one program – the Fast Track to Cruising® Course developed by Offshore Sailing School in 2006 – that truly takes you from no sailing skills to charter certification with the knowledge, skills and confidence you need to handle monohull and catamaran sailboats up to 50’ without hired captain or professional crew. Buy the Boat” Monohull Cruising Course Options for Couples, Families and Friends

We often get requests for private courses – and can make this happy for most courses provided by Offshore Sailing School. This includes this Fast Track to Cruising course plus sailing lessons for beginners, sailboat cruising courses and powerboat courses for couples and families who want to learn together. Most of the boats used for cruising courses have 4 cabins, 3 for participants sharing or private, and one for the instructor. In this Fast Track® to Cruising Course, you may request that the 2 days of basic keelboat lessons on the Colgate 26 (101) are private, but shore classroom sessions are open for all those in the course in the week you choose. Below are some options we offer. Please call 888-454-7015 for more information, availability and monohull or catamaran pricing.

Couples Truly Benefit When Participating Together in a Private Fast Track Monohull Cruising Course

If you are taking the course with a spouse, partner or friend, you may ask for a “Private Couples Buy the Boat” option. This is a popular way to learn for those who plan to spend time on charter vacations, or purchase a boat and cruise together without a captain, or others to share the duties aboard. With just two aboard, it’s important that both are confident steering, crewing, anchoring, docking, picking up moorings, taking care of electronics, generators and engines; and especially knowing what to do should one of you become incapacitated or go overboard. A private course for two is a great way to gain ultimate confidence in one another and your own abilities.

Mom, Dad and the Kids Discover that Sailing and Cruising is a Great Adventure

Bring the family for an amazing bonding experience you’ll long remember. A family of four (two adults and two family kids, minimum age 12, maximum age 25) enjoy learning to sail on a 26 footer the first two days of course 101 , then board a 40′-50′ cruising yacht for 6 days of monohull Basic Cruising and Bareboat Cruising training.  This is the perfect opportunity to reunite family members, learn to handle a big boat together, prepare for bareboat chartering or cruising on your own yacht as a family, and enjoy countless future boating vacations! A fifth family child may be added for an additional fee.

Adult Families and Friends Choose Sailboat Cruising as a New Lifestyle Activity

If you are a couple planning to bareboat charter with another couple, the Fast Track® to Cruising Course is a wonderful way for everyone to gain equal sailing experience and skills. Or you may be a single gal or guy who wants to share a passion with like-minded friends. It’s not much fun to be told to pull a line or be relegated to the galley when you don’t know as much as the others. So why not learn together, and then start exploring the world together on sailing vacations? Choose the Offshore Sailing School “Buy the Boat” option, as a group and learn the dynamics of sharing all the jobs aboard. In this case, you may request having up to 6 aboard the cruising boat, as long as all or some are willing to share cabins.

2022 Year in Review & what’s ahead in 2023

The ball dropped on 2022 and with that, we ring in 2023. (Did you know? NYC’s New Year’s Eve time ball has a maritime beginning!  Read More>> ). We say it every year: “Where did the time go”? Seems like yesterday that we changed our calendars for a new year! The CG team has done so much in the last two years, and it all has culminated in some amazing accomplishments for our team. As we counted down to midnight, we mused on what happened in 2022 from the beautiful shores of Belize. Yes, we quietly “disappeared” for a few days to simply relax, regroup, and set our goals for the upcoming year from  this second biggest barrier reef in the world .  So, we look back at 2022 with some awe and nostalgia, while looking optimistically into the future towards 2023. Happy New Year!

The 2022 brokerage division was also on fire and we predict that we will have an even bigger 2023 now that more inventory is coming to market. Some of the highlights:

  •  Ocean Multihulls as part of Catamaran Guru Group, now has Bali Catamaran dealerships for the Caribbean, Texas and USA for charter management
  • Catamaran Guru is exclusive dealer for Catana in the USA
  • We are an RYA accredited sailing school facility
  • We expanded our footprint in the charter management community and invited boutique charter companies to join us in our quest to provide superior owner experiences
  • We launched “The Yacht Exchange” exclusively for charter yacht owners worldwide
  • We hosted our 4th annual Catamaran Rendezvous in the Bahamas
  • Craig Allison from Maz Ocean joined the team as Company Operations Officer for the Catamaran Guru Group

The Catamaran Guru yacht brokerage division continues to grow, offering full-service brokerage to buyers and sellers of pre-owned yachts. The experienced Cat Guru brokers now have a presence in Florida, Texas, Maryland, Sint Maarten, and St. Thomas in the Caribbean.

Beyond these 2023 predictions of strong catamaran and general boat sales, we have experienced early signs that point to continued high demand for catamarans. Catamaran Guru has already inked several deals in the first weeks of January with several more in the pipeline.

We see 2023 pre-owned yacht sales to be very beneficial for buyers. We think that we will have more inventory coming to market and at more reasonable prices but demand is still very high. Therefor sellers can still expect to fetch good prices for their boats since new boats are not readily available yet because of a huge backlog. Higher interest rates, tighter insurance rules and limited marina space for catamarans will definitely have an impact on prices. But there are still very eager buyers with cash and we are ready with some innovative ideas to help buyers. Our relationships in banking, insurance, charter management etc. will no doubt benefit our buyers and sellers. Love Stats? Here are the 2022 Catamaran Yacht Sales in Numbers!

Annual Catamaran rendezvous & regatta

We did not only work during 2022! We had the best rendezvous in the Abacos, Bahamas after a hiatus of two years after the hurricane and then Covid. A group of 30 catamarans enthusiastically descended on the Abacos in May for four days of unadulterated fun! The event featured a regatta between islands, the famous rumbrella race on Tahiti Beach, a dinghy dress-up competition and some knowledge sharing and seminars.

It is a great camaraderie and a fantastic time for everyone. This year, we had 9 different brands of catamarans (Prout / Lightwave / Nautitech/ Lagoon / Voyage / Fountaine Pajot / Bali / Leopard / Manta), 27 catamarans in total and 104 people join in the fun. Our next event is scheduled for May 7-10, 2023. The Rendezvous dates are chosen to dovetail with the insurance requirements for boats required to be North of Cape Hatteras by June. We also arrange a post-Rendezvous flotilla to depart from The Abacos to the Chesapeake Bay. For this flotilla, we sponsor weather routing for the fleet.

RENDEZVOUS SUPPORTS THE FUTURE OF SAILING

Catamaran Guru, with the help of the generous Rendezvous participants and vendors, proudly donates money to the Hope Town Junior Sailing Club during the event. This sailing program  helps promote junior sailing programs and summer camps in Abaco, Bahamas.

Our goal is to support young sailors in reaching their full potential as they become independent and responsible adults and sailors. We hope to donate to these kids again in 2023! Contact us if you want to donate!

These sub-70-foot multihulls don’t quite officially make it into the superyacht category... but the comfort (particularly when compared to a monohull cabin cruiser) is so much more luxurious that it didn’t seem quite right just confining them to our big multipower category. Welcome to the world of Yachting!

The 60 may be the “smallest” powercat in the Polish shipyard’s Power range, but it already has all the attributes of an ultra-modern multiyacht. Easy to handle, this luxury catamaran can be sailed with or without crew. Thanks to its large beam, the 60 Sunreef Power offers an extremely spacious saloon. On the same level as the aft cockpit, this large semi-open space is fully customizable and bathed in sunlight thanks to a skylight and panoramic glazing. The large volumes of the lower deck can be customized to suit the sailing program and lifestyle of the individual owner. The hydraulic platform offers a relaxation area close to the water, perfect for watersports. The figures are of course a little out of the ordinary, with more than 3,000 miles of range, or a 345 sq ft (32 m²) flybridge equipped with a jacuzzi…

There have already been 30 units built, and for a 60-foot powercat, that’s a more than respectable result from a commercial point of view. This model, produced in the United States, features a relatively classic design, very motoryacht-like with inclined bows and almost enclosed flybridge - a true upper deck in a way. You can opt for an open flybridge, however. The deck line that rises up in the middle of the hulls is also in keeping with motoryacht culture - as such, it lends the PC60 an original outline among 60-foot multiyachts. Construction and finish are all completed to a very high standard. The Horizon PC60 can be customized on request.

The young Chinese brand has launched their first Iliad 62. This new model made its world debut at the Sydney International Boat Show which ran from July 28 to August 1. Our collaborator Kevin Green was there... On board this long-distance cruiser, the emphasis has been placed on controlling fuel consumption, and this has led to increasing the range to over 3,500 nm. The Iliad 62 is therefore capable of ocean passage-making: with a bridgedeck clearance of 3’9” (1.15 m), it also reflects an architectural design optimized for comfort in the open sea. Learn How to Sail a Catamaran: Beginner’s Guide to Mastering Catamaran Sailing

Alex Morgan

course catamaran 2023

Sailing a catamaran offers a unique and thrilling experience on the water. Whether you are a seasoned sailor or a beginner, understanding the essentials of catamaran sailing is vital to have a safe and enjoyable journey. In this guide, we will explore the different aspects of sailing a catamaran, from its advantages to the essential equipment, basic sailing techniques, advanced maneuvers, and navigation and safety tips. Let’s dive in and discover how to sail a catamaran like a pro.

Introduction to Catamarans: Catamarans are multi-hulled vessels that have gained popularity in the sailing world for their unique design and capabilities. Unlike traditional single-hulled sailboats, catamarans feature two parallel hulls connected by a deck, offering stability and spaciousness. The design of a catamaran allows for enhanced performance, comfort, and versatility.

Why Choose a Catamaran for Sailing? Before delving into the specifics of sailing a catamaran, it is important to understand the advantages that these vessels offer:

1. Stability on the Water: Catamarans are known for their exceptional stability, which is attributed to their wide and buoyant hulls. This stability makes them less prone to heeling or tipping over, providing a smoother sailing experience.

2. Spaciousness and Comfort: With their wide beam, catamarans offer ample space and room for movement both above and below deck. The spacious interiors often feature multiple cabins, a large saloon, and a well-equipped galley, providing comfort and convenience during extended trips.

3. Shallow Draft: Catamarans have a shallow draft, meaning they require less depth of water to operate. This allows them to explore shallower areas and navigate closer to shorelines, expanding the cruising grounds and opening up new destinations.

4. Speed and Performance: Due to their design and reduced drag, catamarans are renowned for their speed and performance. They have the ability to reach higher speeds, making them perfect for those seeking an exhilarating sailing experience.

By understanding the advantages of sailing a catamaran, you can appreciate why these vessels are a popular choice amongst sailors. In the following sections, we will delve into the essential equipment needed for catamaran sailing, basic and advanced sailing techniques, as well as navigation and safety tips to ensure a successful and enjoyable catamaran sailing experience.

Key takeaway:

  • Stability on the water: Catamarans offer excellent stability, making them a preferred choice for sailing. The two hulls provide a wider base, reducing the risk of capsizing and providing a smooth sailing experience.
  • Spaciousness and comfort: Catamarans offer more living space compared to monohulls, providing comfort for passengers and crew. The wide beam allows for spacious cabins, lounging areas, and enhanced privacy.
  • Speed and performance: Catamarans are known for their speed and performance. With two hulls and reduced drag, catamarans can achieve higher speeds and offer thrilling sailing experiences to enthusiasts.

Why Choose a Catamaran for Sailing?

When it comes to sailing, why should you choose a catamaran? Well, for starters, they offer unparalleled stability on the water. Not to mention, their spaciousness and comfort make for an enjoyable and relaxing sailing experience. Catamarans have a shallow draft , allowing you to explore shallower waters that other boats may not be able to reach. And let’s not forget about their impressive speed and performance . So, if you’re looking for a thrilling and comfortable sailing adventure, a catamaran is the way to go!

Stability on the Water

Stability on the Water is crucial when sailing a catamaran. Catamarans have twin hulls that create a wide and stable platform, distributing weight evenly and reducing the risk of capsizing. The catamaran’s wide beam also enhances stability, resisting tipping.

Catamarans offer increased comfort and safety on the water. Passengers can move freely without losing balance or feeling seasick. The stable platform also allows for activities like sunbathing or dining, making for a pleasant experience.

Catamarans have better handling and maneuverability , thanks to their stability. They maintain a level sailing position even in rough waters, providing a smoother and more comfortable ride. This stability also enables higher speeds, perfect for those seeking excitement .

It is important to note that external factors like wind and waves can still affect catamarans’ stability. Proper sailing techniques and safety protocols are essential for optimal stability.

Spaciousness and Comfort

Catamarans offer ample space and comfort, making them ideal for sailing enthusiasts. The large living areas and wide hulls provide plenty of room to relax and enjoy the water. The trampoline between the hulls is a comfortable spot for sunbathing and taking in the views.

The spaciousness of catamarans translates to comfortable interiors with multiple cabins, bathrooms, and a well-equipped galley. This allows for privacy and convenience, perfect for extended sailing trips or larger groups.

With their dual-hull design, catamarans offer excellent stability on the water, reducing the likelihood of seasickness and providing a smooth sailing experience.

The wide beam of a catamaran minimizes motion, creating a stable and enjoyable ride. This is beneficial for those sensitive to motion or seeking a relaxed sailing experience.

Shallow Draft

The shallow draft of a catamaran allows it to navigate in shallow waters, which other types of boats cannot access. This advantage is especially helpful when exploring coastal areas, lagoons, or cruising around sandbanks or coral reefs.

The catamaran achieves a shallow draft by designing the hulls with reduced depth. This allows the boat to float in shallower waters, reducing the risk of running aground and enabling access to secluded anchorages and coves. In addition, the shallow draft enhances maneuverability in tight spaces, such as narrow channels or smaller marinas.

Compared to deeper-draft monohull sailboats, catamarans with a shallow draft also have less vulnerability to underwater obstacles like rocks or coral, making sailing safer. It’s important to note that each catamaran model will have its own specific shallow draft measurement provided by the manufacturer.

When planning sailing routes and exploring areas with limited depth, considering the shallow draft of a catamaran is crucial for a safe and enjoyable experience on the water.

Speed and Performance

A catamaran is well-known for its exceptional speed and performance on the water, which makes it a preferred choice for sailing enthusiasts.

Due to its ingenious dual-hull design, a catamaran experiences minimal drag in the water, resulting in the ability to reach higher speeds compared to monohull sailboats.

The wide beam of a catamaran not only enhances its stability but also reduces the risk of capsizing, enabling faster sailing in stronger winds.

With its lightweight structure and sleek shape, a catamaran effortlessly glides through the water, maximizing its speed potential.

Catamarans consistently maintain higher speeds, making them an ideal option for lengthy sailing trips or competitive racing.

Catamarans have a reduced wetted surface area, which minimizes resistance from the water and leads to improved efficiency and performance.

Another advantage of a catamaran is its shallow draft , allowing it to navigate shallower waters with ease, thereby increasing its versatility and suitability for coastal exploration.

Catamarans boast a spacious deck layout , providing ample room for passengers to move around comfortably and accommodating various amenities and recreational activities.

Catamarans offer a smooth and stable sailing experience, even in choppy or rough sea conditions, ensuring optimal comfort for all those on board.

Essential Equipment for Sailing a Catamaran

When it comes to sailing a catamaran, having the right equipment is crucial. In this section, we’ll dive into the essential gear you’ll need for a smooth sailing experience. From the sails and rigging that harness the wind’s power to the rudder and steering controls that guide your vessel, we’ll cover it all. We’ll also explore the importance of anchoring and docking techniques , as well as the safety gear that ensures you’re prepared for any unexpected challenges on the open water. Get ready to gear up and set sail!

Sails and Rigging

When it comes to sailing a catamaran, understanding the importance of sails and rigging is crucial. The sails power the boat and enable it to move through the water, while the rigging supports and controls the sails. Here are some key points to consider about sails and rigging:

1. Sail design: The design of the sails, including their size, shape, and material, plays a significant role in the catamaran’s performance. High-performance racing catamarans often have larger, more efficient sails that generate greater speed.

2. Rigging setup: The rigging on a catamaran consists of the mast, shrouds, and various lines and controls. Proper tensioning and adjustment of the rigging ensures correct sail positioning and overall balance of the boat.

3. Sail controls: Catamarans have several controls for adjusting the sails while sailing. These include the mainsheet, which controls the main sail, and the jib sheets, which control the jib sail. Learning how to trim and adjust these controls optimizes performance.

4. Sail handling: Proper handling of the sails is crucial for smooth sailing. This involves hoisting, lowering, and reefing the sails in strong winds. Understanding safe and efficient sail handling techniques is essential.

Now, let me share a true story to illustrate the importance of sails and rigging. During a sailing race, a catamaran led the fleet due to its well-designed sails and properly rigged mast. The crew efficiently adjusted the sails using the various controls, allowing the catamaran to effectively harness the wind’s power. As a result, they maintained optimal speed and maneuverability, securing victory in the race. This highlights how understanding and utilizing sails and rigging can significantly impact sailing performance.

Rudder and Steering

When it comes to catamaran sailing, the rudder and steering are crucial for maneuvering the vessel efficiently. Here are some key points to consider:

  • The rudder is an important part of a catamaran’s steering system. It is usually located at the rear of the boat and controls the vessel’s direction.
  • Catamarans typically have two rudders , one on each hull, which provide improved stability and control.
  • Steering a catamaran involves using the tiller or wheel, depending on the type of steering system. The helmsman turns the tiller or wheel to adjust the direction, which in turn moves the rudders .
  • When sailing upwind, it is necessary to steer slightly higher into the wind to maintain speed and prevent excessive leeway.
  • Downwind sailing requires adjusting the course to downwind angles, allowing the wind to fill the sails from behind.
  • Proper rudder and steering adjustments are essential for maintaining balance and preventing excessive heel or capsizing.
  • During tacking and jibing, it is important to have the rudder in the correct position to maneuver the catamaran smoothly without losing speed or control.
  • Regular inspection and maintenance of the rudder and steering system are crucial to ensure functionality and prevent any issues while sailing.

By understanding and utilizing the rudder and steering effectively, catamaran sailors can confidently navigate the waters and enjoy a safe and enjoyable sailing experience.

Anchoring and Docking

When anchoring and docking a catamaran, it is important to consider the following factors:

1. Choose a suitable anchor for the size and weight of your catamaran , taking into account the seabed type and prevailing weather conditions. The plow anchor is widely favored due to its strong holding power and versatility.

2. Lower the anchor gently and gradually, allowing it to settle properly on the seabed. Pay attention to the water depth and use a scope ratio of 7:1 (7 feet of anchor rode for every foot of water depth) to ensure sufficient holding power.

3. Secure the catamaran by attaching the anchor rode to a cleat or designated anchor attachment point on the boat. Make sure to apply proper tension to prevent excessive movement.

4. When approaching the dock, do so slowly and cautiously, taking into consideration factors such as wind , current , and nearby boats. Use your engines and rudders to maneuver smoothly.

5. Employ appropriate docking techniques based on the type and design of the dock. Consider utilizing spring lines or fenders to assist in securing the boat and protecting the hulls.

Pro-tip: Regularly practicing anchoring and docking maneuvers will improve your skills and give you confidence in handling your catamaran under different conditions. Proper technique and experience will greatly enhance your overall sailing experience.

Safety Gear

When sailing a catamaran, having the right safety gear is crucial. Here are some essential safety gear items for catamaran sailors:

  • Life Jackets: Wear properly fitting and Coast Guard-approved life jackets for everyone onboard.
  • Throwable Devices: Keep easily accessible throwable devices, such as life rings or cushions, for emergencies.
  • EPIRB: An Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) helps rescuers locate you in emergencies.
  • Flares: Carry a set of marine flares to signal for help in low visibility or emergency situations. Check the expiration dates regularly.
  • Fire Extinguishers: Have at least one marine-grade fire extinguisher onboard to quickly put out potential fires.
  • First Aid Kit: Keep a well-stocked first aid kit onboard to treat minor injuries or provide initial care before professional help arrives.
  • Navigation Lights: Ensure your catamaran has properly functioning navigation lights for visibility during low-light conditions.
  • VHF Radio: A VHF marine radio is essential for communication with other vessels and contacting emergency services if needed.
  • Anchor and Rode: Carry a reliable anchor and sufficient anchor rode for safe anchoring when needed.

Remember to familiarize yourself with the operation and use of all safety gear onboard your catamaran to be prepared for unexpected situations.

Basic Sailing Techniques for Catamarans

Mastering the art of sailing a catamaran requires a solid foundation in basic sailing techniques. In this section, we’ll dive into the essential skills you need to navigate the waters with confidence. From understanding points of sail to mastering tacking and jibing , we’ll cover the maneuvers that will enhance your catamaran sailing prowess. We’ll explore the crucial aspects of sail trim and balance , as well as maneuvering in different wind conditions . Get ready to set sail and embrace the thrill of catamaran adventures!

Understanding Points of Sail

Understanding points of sail is crucial for successful catamaran sailing. It refers to the different angles at which a sailboat can sail relative to the wind. Different techniques and adjustments are required for optimal performance based on the point of sail. The main points of sail are:

1. No Sail: When the boat is not under sail and the sails are completely down.

2. Close Hauled: Sailing as close to the wind direction as possible, typically at an angle of 45 degrees or less.

3. Beam Reach: Sailing perpendicular to the wind direction, with the wind coming directly from either side of the boat.

4. Broad Reach: Sailing with the wind coming from behind the boat at an angle.

5. Running: Sailing directly downwind, with the wind coming from directly behind the boat.

To effectively sail a catamaran, it is crucial to understand how to adjust and trim the sails, as well as steer the boat based on the current point of sail. Practice and experience will enhance your proficiency in handling different wind conditions and making the necessary adjustments for optimal speed and performance.

Remember, prioritize safety while sailing. Familiarize yourself with navigation rules, weather patterns, and emergency preparedness to ensure a smooth and enjoyable catamaran sailing experience.

Tacking and Jibing

Tacking and jibing are vital sailing techniques for catamarans . These maneuvers allow you to change direction and navigate effectively. Below are the step-by-step instructions for tacking and jibing:

1. Tacking:

– Direct the catamaran towards the wind until the sails start to luff . – Release the jib sheet and ensure it smoothly crosses the boat, avoiding any entanglement. – Turn the bow of the catamaran into the wind, managing the mainsail as it fills with wind on the opposite side. – Adjust the jib sheet on the new leeward side to capture the wind and maintain speed. – Make any necessary adjustments to the heading and sails to resume your desired course.

– Prepare the catamaran by getting the jib and mainsail ready for the change in direction. – Steer the catamaran away from the wind, ensuring that the mainsail is backed by the wind. – Release the mainsheet and swiftly swing the boom across the cockpit to the opposite side. – Trim the mainsail and jib to harness the wind from the new direction, effectively maintaining control and speed. – Adjust the heading and sails as needed to resume your desired course.

By mastering these techniques, you can skillfully maneuver your catamaran, enhancing the enjoyment and efficiency of your sailing. Always consider the wind direction and adjust your sails accordingly to maintain control and optimize efficiency throughout your journey.

Sail Trim and Balance

Sail trim and balance are crucial for effective catamaran sailing. Proper sail trim ensures optimal performance and speed , while balancing the sails evenly distribute the pressure between them and prevent excessive heeling of the boat . Adjusting the angle, tension, and position of the sails in response to wind conditions is essential for achieving the desired sail trim and balance.

One way to achieve sail trim and balance is by adjusting the position of the traveler , which controls the lateral movement of the mainsail. Moving the traveler to leeward allows the sail to take in more wind, improving the sail trim, while moving it to windward reduces exposure, compensating for gusts or changes in wind direction.

In addition, adjusting the tension of the halyards and sheets can further fine-tune sail trim and balance. By tightening or loosening these lines, you can optimize the shape and curvature of the sails , ultimately improving their performance.

It is important to continuously monitor and make adjustments to sail trim and balance while sailing. Being responsive to changing wind conditions and making timely adjustments will enhance overall performance and ensure a smoother, more enjoyable sailing experience .

Keep in mind that mastering sail trim and balance takes practice and experience . Paying attention to these factors will significantly improve your catamaran sailing abilities.

Maneuvering in Different Wind Conditions

Maneuvering a catamaran in different wind conditions requires specific steps for optimal control and performance. In order to achieve this, it is important to assess the wind direction by observing nearby objects or using a wind indicator. Once the wind direction is determined, adjust the sails based on the wind direction. For downwind sailing, set the mainsail and jib on opposite sides, while for upwind sailing, position the sails closer together.

Next, it is crucial to trim the sails properly to maximize lift and minimize drag. In lighter winds, the sails should be loosened, while in stronger winds, they should be tightened. Using the mainsail traveler to adjust the position of the mainsail sheet can optimize sail shape and control in different wind angles.

To steer the catamaran, adjust the rudder accordingly. Smaller course corrections should be made in light winds, while larger adjustments are necessary in stronger winds.

In gusty conditions, it is important to react to gusts by depowering the sails. This can be done by easing the sheets or heading up into the wind, which helps maintain stability.

It is essential to be aware of wind shifts and make necessary adjustments to the course and sail trim.

Practicing sailing techniques such as tacking , jibing , and sailing close-hauled or downwind can significantly improve proficiency in handling the catamaran in various wind conditions.

By following these steps, catamaran sailors can confidently navigate and maneuver their vessel in different wind conditions, ensuring a safe and enjoyable sailing experience.

Advanced Catamaran Sailing Techniques

Ready to take your catamaran sailing skills to the next level? In this section, we’ll dive into the thrilling world of advanced catamaran sailing techniques . Get ready to learn about the exhilarating art of spinnaker sailing , the adrenaline-pumping experience of flying a hull , the secrets of performance tuning , and the challenges and strategies of handling heavy weather conditions . Brace yourself for an adventure on the high seas as we explore the exciting realm of catamaran sailing like never before.

Spinnaker Sailing

Spinnaker sailing is a vital technique used in catamaran sailing to optimize speed. The spinnaker , a balloon-shaped sail, is strategically flown in front of the boat while sailing downwind. By harnessing the wind from a different direction, the spinnaker empowers the catamaran to sail faster and with greater efficiency.

To set up the spinnaker, the crew skillfully hoists it up the mast using a halyard and securely attaches the corners of the sail to the spinnaker pole . Once elevated, the crew precisely trims the sail by adjusting the sheets , controlling its shape and angle. This requires coordination and expertise as the crew works together to steer the boat and fine-tune the sails for optimal balance and speed.

Maintaining awareness of wind conditions is crucial to adapting the spinnaker and avoiding excessive power or loss of control. Spinnaker sailing significantly enhances the performance of a catamaran, enabling it to achieve remarkable speeds and maximize downwind navigation.

When honing spinnaker sailing skills, it is advised to commence in lighter wind conditions and progressively advance as proficiency accrues. Proper training and diligent practice are imperative for a safe and gratifying sailing experience.

Flying a Hull

Flying a hull is a technique used in catamaran sailing. It involves lifting one hull out of the water, allowing the boat to glide on just one hull while the other remains elevated. This technique, known as flying a hull , is commonly used in high winds and requires practice and experience.

To fly a hull, the sailor must position their weight on the windward hull, leveraging their body weight to lift the hull out of the water. This creates less resistance, increasing the catamaran's speed and performance. It can be an exhilarating experience, as the boat skims across the water.

Flying a hull is not without risks and should only be attempted by experienced sailors. It requires a good understanding of the catamaran's dynamics and stability. Proper sail trim and balance are crucial to maintain control and prevent capsizing.

When flying a hull, be prepared for sudden gusts of wind and rapid changes in boat speed. Constant adjustments to sail trim and weight distribution are necessary for stability and control. Prioritize safety, wear appropriate gear, and always be mindful of your limits and the current conditions. With practice and experience, flying a hull can be a thrilling and rewarding aspect of catamaran sailing.

Performance Tuning

  • Maintain and inspect all systems and equipment regularly. This includes checking rigging tension , inspecting sails for damage, and ensuring proper alignment of rudders and steering system .
  • Clean hull regularly to remove marine growth that can create drag and slow you down.
  • Maximize speed through proper sail trim. Experiment with adjustments to find the perfect balance between power and efficiency. Adjust mainsail and jib sheets to achieve desired sail shape and angle to the wind.
  • Distribute weight evenly throughout the catamaran for stability and performance. Balance passengers , equipment , and supplies evenly on both hulls to prevent unnecessary drag.

Frequent performance tuning will help you get the most out of your catamaran, allowing for faster and more efficient sailing. A well-tuned catamaran can significantly enhance your sailing experience and give you a competitive edge in races.

Fact: Performance tuning can improve catamaran speed by up to 10%, allowing for swift gliding through the water.

Heavy Weather Sailing

In heavy weather sailing, taking proper precautions is crucial to ensure the safety of both the crew and the catamaran. Follow the steps below when sailing in challenging weather conditions:

1. Check the weather forecast: Before heading out, always check the forecast for potential storms or strong winds. This will help you decide if it is safe to sail.

2. Reef the sails: Reduce the exposed sail area in strong winds. Partially furl or lower the sails to maintain control and stability.

3. Ensure proper ballast: Distribute weight in the catamaran to maintain balance and stability. Shift crew members or equipment to the windward side to offset strong gusts.

4. Monitor the sea state: Pay attention to the sea condition and adjust your course accordingly. Avoid large waves or swells that may cause the catamaran to broach or capsize.

5. Have appropriate safety gear: Carry essential safety equipment like life jackets, harnesses, and tethers. Ensure all crew members are familiar with their use.

6. Maintain constant communication: Keep in touch with other boats or shore stations to report your position and receive important updates or warnings.

The catamaran Tanna 47 wins the 2023 Boat of the Year !

12 December 2022

bannire10-min-1-1920×562.jpg

In October, Fountaine Pajot interviewed the  Cruising World Jury  on board the Tanna 47 at the Annapolis SailboatShow. At this moment, the jury was testing the Boat on Dock, and then during a sea trial…  The winners of the well renowed and expected  “Boat of The Year”  Awards decerded by the  Cruising World Magazine  has just been unveiled! The brand-new  Tanna 47 catamaran  was running for the most pretigious recognition in the multihulls category. Fountaine Pajot is very proud to announce that the Tanna 47 brilliantly passed her exam…

“The trend toward cruising multihulls continues unabated, and perhaps has even come full circle. The popularity of boats with more than one hull, especially catamarans, is more evident with each passing year in charter fleets, on boat-show docks, and in far-flung anchorages the world over. The multihull genie is out of the bottle, and there’s no evidence it will ever return. That reality was once again underlined in the 2023 Boat of the Year trials, where the Cruising Multihull class, with five legitimate contenders, was certainly among the strongest categories’.”

The Cruising World Magazine highlights the dominance of the  french Shipyards in this competition and particulrly the leading brand Fountaine Pajot, as mentionned in their Winner’s release: “ It’s fitting that one of those pioneering firms topped the field for 2023: Well done, Fountaine Pajot! ”.

Why the sailing catamaran Tanna 47 is the “Best catamaran of the Year 2023” ?

It seems that both the dockside inspections and under sail, the Fountaine Pajot Tanna 47 rang a bell for our panelists…  “I believe this is my favorite Fountaine Pajot model of all time,”  judge Herb McCormick says.  “The size and dimensions are ideal: It’s a big cat but not overwhelming. A big reason is the helm station, with dedicated pods for driving, and the sailhandling. And, holy cow, it really sailed well.”

Judge Mark Pillsbury also appreciates on the Tanna 47 catamaran:

  • The smart deck layout
  • The corresponding systems: “With plenty of solar panels, a watermaker and more-than-ample refrigeration space, the Tanna 47 was set up really well for cruising and living aboard.”
  • The ease of handling: “On a beam reach in 13 knots of breeze, we scooted along at 7 to 8 knots, and I liked the setup of the helm, with the wheel being separated slightly from the winches. The boat was easy to sail solo, but there was room for the crew to jump in and help when they wanted to.”

A drone attack that targeted Moscow on Tuesday exposed glaring breaches in its air defenses and underlined the capital’s vulnerability as more Russian soil comes under fire amid expectations of a Ukrainian counteroffensive.

The attack, which lightly damaged three apartment buildings, angered Russia’s hawks, who scathingly criticized President Vladimir Putin and the military brass for failing to protect the heart of Kremlin power more than 500 kilometers (310 miles) from the front line.

Five of the eight drones that took part in the raid were shot down, the Defense Ministry said, while three others were jammed and forced to veer off course. Some Russian media and bloggers alleged a larger number of drones were involved, but those claims couldn’t be verified.

The attack followed a May 3 drone strike on the Kremlin that lightly damaged the roof of the palace that includes one of Putin’s official residences. Other drones have crashed near Moscow in what Russian authorities described as botched Ukrainian attempts to attack the city and infrastructure facilities in the suburbs.

Last week, the Russian border region of Belgorod was the target of one of the most serious cross-border raids since the war began, with two far-right pro-Ukrainian paramilitary groups claiming responsibility. Officials in the southern Russian city of Krasnodar near annexed Crimea said two drones struck there Friday, damaging residential buildings. The attacks also drew calls for bolstering Russia’s borders.

Ukrainian authorities rejoiced over Tuesday’s drone attack but customarily avoided a claim of responsibility, a response similar to what they said after previous attacks on Russian territory.

In a sarcastic tweet, Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said that “even artificial intelligence is already smarter and more far-sighted than the Russian military and political leadership.”

The Russian military pummeled the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv and other cities with cruise missiles and exploding drones for the past three nights, a significant spike in such attacks that have been regularly launched since October. The Ukrainian military said it shot down most of the missiles and remained coy about reporting damage from the strikes.

Putin cast the attack on Moscow as a Ukrainian attempt to intimidate its residents. He said Moscow’s air defenses worked as expected, but admitted that protecting a huge city is a daunting task.

“It’s clear what needs to be done to beef up air defenses, and we will do it,” he added.

Military watchers said the drones used in the attack were relatively crude and cheap but could have a range of up to 1,000 kilometers (over 620 miles). They predicted more could follow.

Some of the drones seen flying toward Moscow were the Ukrainian-made UJ-22s, capable of carrying explosives; others spotted in the skies near Moscow were similarly small vehicles.

Mark Cancian, a senior adviser with the Center for Strategic and International Studies International Security Program, noted that part of the reason why drones could make it all the way to Moscow undetected was because Russian air defenses are mostly focused on fending off attacks by more sophisticated weapons.

“They are oriented on missiles, ballistic missiles, regional missiles, aircraft, bombers, but not short- range drones, you know, which might be flying very low over the ground,” Cancian told The Associated Press. “The Russian air defense was just not designed to do this.”

The Russian military will likely move some of its air defense assets away from the front line to help protect Moscow, Cancian said, a move that would weaken Russian troops in the face of a Ukrainian counteroffensive.

“That’s good for the Ukrainians in the sense that they’re pulling these systems away from other areas where they could be used maybe from front-line units,” he said.

The Kremlin’s muted response to the attack irked some hawkish commentators and military bloggers in Moscow, who had criticized the Russian leadership for failing to mount a stronger response.

Yevgeny Prigozhin, the maverick millionaire head of the Wagner private military contractor that plays a key role on the battlefield in Ukraine, scolded the Russian military leadership and denounced them as “scum” and “swine” for failing to protect Moscow.

“You, the Defense Ministry, have done nothing to launch an offensive,” Prigozhin said in a statement released by his office. “How dare you to allow the drones to reach Moscow?”

Ramzan Kadyrov, the strongman leader of the Russian province of Chechnya who sent forces from the region to fight in Ukraine, urged the Kremlin to declare martial law nationwide and use all its resources in Ukraine “to sweep away that terrorist gang.”

Some Kremlin watchers noted that Putin’s calm reaction that contrasted with angry statements from Russian hawks reflects his belief that the public won’t be unsettled by the attack.

“Putin has talked repeatedly about the Russian people’s remarkable patience and tenacity,” Tatiana Stanovaya of the Carnegie Endowment said in a commentary. “No matter how defiant another Ukrainian attack is, Putin doesn’t think that it could provoke public discontent with the government.”

She noted that while playing down the strikes makes the authorities look “embarrassed and helpless,” it fits Putin’s course to drag out the conflict.

James Nixey, the director of the Russia and Eurasia program at Chatham House, said Tuesday’s attack signaled a growing Ukrainian determination to launch strikes deep inside Russia and predicted more will come.

“This is not the first and it’s not the last,” Nixey told AP. “The Ukrainians are in various respects flexing their muscles, seeing what they’re capable of hitting back. It is one more part of the Ukrainian play to ensure that they are not just playing defense, but they can play some offense as well.”

Despite the loud calls for revenge, the Russian military can’t do much more than what it has been doing since starting the war, Nixey noted.

“The reality is that Russia does have limits in what it can do. It’s got limits on manpower, limits on its finances, limits on its artillery munitions, missiles, drones, everything,” he said. “They’re already expending all their efforts, all their monies, all their treasure, all their blood if you like on prosecuting their war in Ukraine.”
