Refitting a Tired Saloon Table

  • By Roger Hughes
  • Updated: June 26, 2017

refits

The original saloon table on my Down East 45 schooner was a single heavy sheet of 3⁄4-inch-thick laminated plywood, 27 inches wide by 57 inches long. It was supported on two substantial aluminum pedestals locking into large, round collars screwed to the floor and table.

There were two annoying problems with this structure: It was permanently mounted on the port side of the saloon, so people sitting on the starboard settee couldn’t reach the table. It was also difficult to squeeze in and out of one end because the chart table bulkhead was in the way. It was a very large but also impractical table, so I decided to build myself a more versatile one that could seat more than just three people.

My new design would have a narrow, fixed center section, with hinged leaves on either side that swing up to reach either or both of the settees. This is hardly a unique concept, so why didn’t the original builders do it this way? To make it the right height for the settees, the table needed to be 27 inches high, but this meant the new leaves could not be more than 27 inches or they would catch on the floor when they were down. With both leaves open, this left a 13-inch space in the middle, which determined the width of the fixed section. The table would be 43 inches long to allow access on all sides.

refits

I started with a 4-by-8-foot sheet of oak plywood from Lowe’s. The folks at the store cut this large, heavy sheet to my three panel sizes on their circular saw, which saved me a lot of time and enabled me to fit the pieces into my vehicle. I wanted rounded corners on all the pieces, so I traced around a tin lid to give me a radius, then cut the corners with a fine scrolling blade fitted in my jigsaw.

I decided to laminate the tabletops with a high-pressure melamine laminate, similar to Formica, because it is both hard and scratch-resistant. I found exactly what I was looking for on the Wilsonart website. It is a realistic-looking teak-grained laminate called Nepal Teak in a high-gloss finish that looks just like real varnished teak. I special-ordered a 4-by-8-foot sheet from Lowe’s. It is 3⁄64 inch thick, and I cut it to the approximate size of each table section using metal cutting shears, leaving about a 1⁄2-inch overhang on all sides. Then I glued them on the plywood using, Weldwood’s original contact cement, which is more liquid than the gel variety. I spread it on the plywood and laminate surfaces with a 6-inch roller, then waited for the glue to become tacky. When joining large surfaces of laminate with contact cement, you have to get it right on the first try because the cement bonds on contact and there is no wiggle room. I placed the laminate on my workbench with the glue side up, then laid two thin wooden battens on each end. I put the plywood on top, glue side down. The wood strips kept the two pieces apart while I positioned the plywood accurately above the laminate. It was then a simple matter to slide the battens out and press the plywood to the laminate. I then placed the board on some paper on the house floor and walked all over it in my deck shoes. This applied much more than the 75 pounds of pressure called for in the gluing instructions and firmly pressed the pieces together.

After leaving the three boards overnight for the glue to harden, I carefully trimmed the laminate flush with the edges of the boards, using a router with a vertical cutting bit and roller-bearing guide. This produced a sharp, straight edge to which I intended to fit teak trim all the way around.

refits

I had some 1⁄2-inch-thick teak slats left over from a forward-cabin rebuild that were just right to make the straight-edge trim for the panels. Of course, this was much too thick to bend around the corners, so I used my jigsaw to cut rounded trim from bits of solid teak I had saved from previous projects. All the trim had to be drilled and counterbored, then screwed and glued to the edges of the three boards. Then all the holes — 75 total — had to be plugged and sanded.

I decided to make fixed fiddles on the center section because the things that invariably get placed there are liable to slide off when the boat rocks — even in a marina. I cut strips to length and beveled and rounded the tops, then shaped both ends in a graceful swan’s-neck curve to join the corner trim. I left the corners open to enable the table to be wiped, and to add a bit of decorative accent.

An unusual stumbling block I didn’t anticipate was keeping track of all the pieces of trim that had been shaped to match the individual edges and corners. I made 12 corner pieces, four edging strips for fiddles and eight other edging trims. All were slightly different, because this table was nothing if not “handcrafted.”

I hinged the table’s leaves using six stainless-steel sliding pull-apart hinges — three on each leaf. These allow the leaves to be easily detached from the center section when necessary, such as to access the floorboards.

refits

The mainmast compression post on my schooner is a 4-inch square post passing through the saloon to the keelson, and it offered a perfect support for one end of the table’s center section. I used a 4-inch brass-plated butt hinge to support that end of the table, screwing one half of the hinge to the compression post with a teak block spacer and the other to the underside of the table. The spacer is important because it enables the center section of the table to hinge up and hang with a strop to a deck beam when I need access to the floorboards. This attachment method also allows me to remove the table completely by simply knocking the hinge pin out, separating the two halves of the hinge.

To support the other end of the table, I shaped a leg out of plywood. I attached it at the top with a short piano hinge that allows the leg to fold flat to the underside of the center section of the table whenever it’s lifted to get to the floorboards. I secured the bottom of the leg with two pins that drop into flanged bushings I set in the floor. I made the pins by screwing 1⁄4-inch-diameter stainless wood screws into the bottom of the support, then hack-sawing the heads off and rounding them with a file. To support the table’s leaves, I bought two attractive turned-wood table legs, grandly termed “early American table legs,” from Lowe’s. I fastened the top of each leg to the center of the leaf edge’s underside, using a small brass hinge, so when not in use, each leg folds to the inside of the leaf, where it is held by a plastic C-clip. I screwed 1⁄4-inch-diameter pins in the bottom of each leg, which drop into bronze flange bushings I sunk into the floor. This simple yet secure support for the table leaves is much stronger than center-section supports like those I have had on other boats, which nearly always allow the leaves to sag. I also bought two brass barrel-bolt latches, which I screwed to each leaf. The bolts drop into flanged bushings set in the floor and stop the leaves from swinging about in the folded-down position when the boat heels.

I stained the plywood on the underside of the panels and the table legs with teak stain, which, when rubbed with a rag, made the wood look amazingly like the shade of real teak. I bought a quart of the stain, called 120 Teak Natural and made by Zar, from a local hardware store. When all the woodwork was complete, I varnished it with two coats of Epifanes high-gloss wood varnish. The result is that it’s difficult to distinguish between the real teak trim and the laminate.

When both leaves are extended, the new table is more than twice the size of the old one and looks positively baronial. More important, it is much more functional because it easily seats six and allows access all around, yet when the leaves are down it is smaller than the original.

Roger Hughes is nearing the completion of a six-year project restoring his Down East 45, Britannia. For more on the restoration, visit his website www.schooner-britannia.com.

Has anyone ever made one to double as an emergency rudder. If that possiblity was incorporated into the design it could make life easier if a problem arose.

Sirius Yachts - deck saloon

What is a deck saloon yacht, and why is it better for cruising?

A deck saloon yacht is just a sailboat with big windows, right? Wrong. While many sailing yacht builders may have you believe that adding a higher coachroof with bigger windows and putting ‘DS’ at the end of a model name is enough for a boat to qualify as a ‘deck saloon’, there’s actually a lot more to it than that.

A true deck saloon yacht has its saloon at deck level – the clue’s in the name. Sitting in the saloon, you should be able to look out at the world around you, which you can’t do in many so-called deck saloon yachts.

Some manufacturers are a bit more honest, calling their yachts ‘raised saloon’ instead. But while the saloon is slightly raised, it’s not raised to deck level. You still go down a companionway to get to the saloon, rather than just stepping straight in through a door.

A true deck saloon, like ours, is at exactly the same level as the cockpit, giving you the great inside/outside feel that you get on a cruising catamaran but with one spacious hull instead of two narrow ones. A real deck saloon has many benefits as we explain in this article.

Sirius Yachts - deck saloon yachts let you see the view outside

A deck saloon offers a far better view

Would you expect a waterside holiday home to have windows so small you can’t see out of them? Neither would we. Yet many sailors have come to accept that seagoing yachts should have small windows. On traditional boats, in good weather most people prefer to sit in the cockpit, but as it gets cooler in the evening or it starts to rain, they have to climb down into the saloon. Many boats have no saloon windows at all. Some do have a few through-hull windows, but they are never at the right height for everyone to have a good view out, and being so low down, if you’re in a marina the only view you’ll get is of another boat’s topsides a few feet away, blocking out most of the light.

Sirius Yachts - deck saloons give you a better view

It’s even worse if you’re anchored somewhere nice. Outside there could be a pod of dolphins, an amazing aurora borealis or sea eagles plucking their dinner from the surrounding waters, but no one in the saloon would see it. Your yacht can take you to new lands and beautiful anchorages, and if you can’t see them it does beg the question, what’s the point in going there?

On a Sirius there are large saloon windows in every direction, giving you an uninterrupted 360-degree view out. Everyone gets a commanding view over the bay, harbour or anchorage whether they’re two metres tall or just a toddler.

But it’s not just in ports and anchorages that a deck saloon excels. It’s also better at sea. Whatever the weather or the temperature outside, you get the same view as you would from the cockpit, day or night. Whether you’re cooking in the galley, navigating at the chart table or just relaxing on a comfortable settee, you still get to admire the seascape (and keep a lookout) at the same time.

Sirius Yachts - use the deck saloon like a pilothouse

Steer from inside like you’re in pilothouse

To take full advantage of the warmth and shelter that a deck saloon provides, some Sirius owners have a second, inside helm installed at the chart table. There is a slight downside, the wheel does take up space, but it’s an option worth considering if you have long rivers or narrow channels to transit every time you go sailing. For most customers, however, we fit autopilot and engine controls at the chart table which allows you to steer from inside without needing a wheel. A small rotary knob on the autopilot display is used to correct the course by a degree or switch to “Power Steering” mode to steer the rudder directly giving “fly by wire” control.

You can also keep safe and warm at night and keep watch from inside. You can alter course, use the radar or chartplotter, make a coffee or snack and keep a good lookout in all directions while keeping safe and warm. No other yachts’ cockpit and position offer such a clear view around when sailing as the saloon of a Sirius looks out under the sails. When you do need to go out into the cockpit, to trim the sails, it’s just a few steps behind you.

Sirius Yachts - deck saloon windows give a clearer view forward

It’s worth noting that glass deck saloon windows give a much clearer view forward than a sprayhood, except perhaps when the sprayhood is folded down or brand new. On a Sirius, even when sitting in the cockpit you get a crystal-clear view forward, looking straight through the deck saloon and under the genoa when sitting sheltered and low in the cockpit, and easily above when standing up or sitting on the coaming.

Safety and strength of our deck saloon

Many sailors still have an old-school view that large coachroof windows and through-hull windows on yachts are unsafe. There was some truth in that 30 years ago but materials and bonding technology have moved on since then. It may still be a valid concern for yachts that aren’t engineered for all-weather ocean cruising but the hull windows on a Sirius are literally bulletproof. Build quality, strength and safety are at the forefront of everything we do. The adhesive we use for our windows is the same as you’ll find in aeroplanes and helicopters. As good as a deck saloon is, we would not build this type of yacht if there were even the slightest concern about its strength or safety.

Sirius Yachts - Our deck saloon windows are made from toughened security glass

Our deck saloon windows are made from toughened security glass. They are up to 10mm thick, bonded with an areospace-grade adhesive and through-bolted in aluminium frames with hundreds of 6mm bolts. The recess the windows sit in is a 25mm wide part of the GRP deck, and the inner aluminium frame overlaps by the same distance. The only way to break our windows is to use a sharp pointed hammer (like you find in buses and trains), but even then you’d struggle to break them.

The same goes for the hull windows and large door between the deck saloon and cockpit of any Sirius yacht. It’s made from the same bulletproof material used for police and military cars. Unlike armoured vehicles, though, we use even thicker 12mm special-coated polycarbonate! It is, by the way, the material one would use to build shutter blinds to make windows and companionways safe for ocean passages on older yachts.

Many Sirius yachts have crossed oceans and none of them have ever had any problems with the strength of their windows or doors, even in the most extreme conditions.

Sirius Yachts - On a deck saloon yacht you can sit in the saloon with the heating on

Protection from the weather

How often have you been cold and wet while sailing? On a deck saloon yacht you don’t have to endure chilly wind or heavy rain, you can sit in the saloon with the heating on. You may enjoy the wind in your hair and the spray off the waves hitting you in the face and that’s great. But with a Sirius, you also have the choice to come in out of the cold whenever you want to. Helming doesn’t have to be an endurance competition, you can steer from inside instead. And when you do venture out into the cockpit, to trim the sails, for example, you can find a heater outlet in the wet locker that keeps your oilskins and boots warm and dry.

Having a warm, enclosed deck saloon enables you to sail further, for longer, as well as increasing the length of your sailing season. Because you’re not tired, you’ll make fewer mistakes and you don’t have to choose between navigating and keeping a lookout – you can sit at the chart table and do both at the same time.

If you’re worried about large windows overheating the saloon in strong sunlight, we do offer the option of sunshades and blinds but in reality, because our yachts are so well insulated (up to 80mm in the roof of the deck saloon), they don’t tend to get too hot or cold. We can also install air conditioning so that whatever the temperature outside, inside will be the temperature you want.

Social benefits

Deck saloon yachts have a more sociable layout than conventional yachts. If someone doesn’t want to be on deck, on a conventional yacht they have little choice but to either sit in the companionway or go down below. Once out of sight, they feel left out. Our deck saloon is on the same level as the cockpit and all that separates those inside from the rest of the crew is a large doorway and windows.

Sirius Yachts - Deck saloons make great family boats

Deck saloons make great family boats. While the grown-ups are out in the cockpit the kids can be inside in the deck saloon, or vice versa. When it gets cooler and everyone wants to be inside, there’s more than enough room for the whole family to sit comfortably around the saloon table and everyone has a good view out. The layout of a deck saloon is simply much more versatile for family life on board, whether it’s morning, noon or night and whether you’re sailing, in port or anchored.

More living space

Because our deck saloons are a bit higher than most others, you get lots of useful extra living space beneath them. On many so-called deck saloon yachts, there isn’t enough headroom under the saloon so the space beneath it is effectively wasted. On a Sirius you can have a large midships cabin here, a workshop, an office or even a sauna! A true deck saloon has accommodation on two levels, increasing the typical floor space by 4-6㎡ (40-65sq ft), so you get a lot more interior for the length of boat.

Many builders like to boost interior volume by increasing the yacht’s beam. This affects the handling of the yacht under sail. As she heels the immersed hull shape becomes unbalanced, causing unpleasant handling traits. Instead, by using a true deck saloon we can enlarge our yachts’ interiors even further while keeping a narrower, better balanced and more hydrodynamically efficient hull shape.

One-level living in our deck saloon

One of the unique features of Sirius Yachts is one-level living. While our yachts are built on several levels to give you more space and options, in all of the communal living spaces you share the same eye height. Only the private spaces, stowage and technical areas are down below. So whether you’re standing in the galley, lounging in the saloon, navigating at the chart table or sitting in the cockpit, everyone is on the same level. No one feels higher or lower and it’s much easier to chat or just give a wave, a thumbs-up or a smile or see if help is needed. There’s no need to shout down the companionway or up from the galley.

Most boats aren’t laid out like that. Some have the galley tucked under the cockpit, others have the chart table there and the galley forward of the saloon, but at Sirius Yachts we believe everyone’s eye line should be at the same height. On a Sirius, when you finish making lunch you don’t have to climb a stepladder to serve it in the cockpit. Just a couple of safe, easy steps and your crew will get all you intended for them – without having to clean up what was spilt on the way out.

Sirius Yachts - bright and airy deck saloon

Motion comfort

Some people worry about the height of a deck saloon above the waterline. With the saloon higher up than in a conventional yacht, doesn’t it amplify the boat’s motion at sea? It does, of course, but not by much – no more so than the cockpit. In a true deck saloon yacht, the saloon is at exactly the same level as the cockpit, and in fact both are significantly lower than the cockpit of a conventional yacht that has an aft cabin underneath. In centre cockpit yachts the cockpit is even higher. It’s also worth asking yourself what’s more likely to make you seasick: sitting in a bright and airy deck saloon with a clear 360-degree view of the horizon, or sitting down below in a saloon with no view at all, or just two tiny rectangles of sky and water?

Low centre of gravity

In general, Sirius Yachts have a much lower centre of mass than most comparable cruisers. We put all the heavy equipment and machinery low down and amidships, in the deep bilge right above the keel. Our huge main stowage spaces are down there too – in the workshop, beneath the bed in the midships cabin, under the sole in the galley. A low centre of gravity is important for several reasons: to minimise the boat’s pitching and rolling motion at sea, to help rather than hinder the righting moment of the keel, and to improve the boat’s performance (pitching slows you down). Most cruising yachts can’t lower their centre of gravity in this way because they only have a shallow bilge.

If a Sirius were to capsize, the extra volume and buoyancy of the deck saloon would make it very unstable while inverted and the yacht would right itself immediately

No negative stability

Unlike most other boats, there is no negative stability on a Sirius thanks to the shape of the deck saloon and decks. If a Sirius were to capsize, the extra volume and buoyancy of the deck saloon would make it very unstable while inverted and the yacht would right itself immediately. By contrast, many boats with a wide-beam hull and low coachroof – and all multihulls – are stable when inverted. When they capsize, they’re likely to remain upside down for a lot longer, or indefinitely in the case of a catamaran.

Try it for yourself

At Sirius, we specialise in deck saloon yachts and we’ve been building them for more than 30 years, much longer than other brands. We know they make the best cruising yachts because of all the advantages above, and we know we’ve got it right. If you’ve never sailed a true deck saloon yacht, contact us today and we can arrange to show you what you’ve been missing.

How to Lower Cabin Table for Bed

Zoom767

I have a 1990 Hunter Legend 35.5 and can't for the life of me figure out how to lower the cabin table in order to use it for a bed. It has a rope attached to the compression post and I'm afraid to undo the knot under the table. I can see it routes through a pulley mechanism, but it will only lower to a certain point. If I undo the knot, I'm afraid I'll lose the rope routing and end up eating my meals at floor level  I'm including some photos to show the lay-out and would appreciate any insight. Best Regards, Rob

If you have not looked in the little compartment in the table top that is forward of the mast, look in there and you will see a t-handle which must be loosened before dropping the table. Something odd in the last picture is that there is stud of some sorts sticking out of the compression post which could prevent the table from dropping all the way down. Does the table move at all?

It only moves around the post, not up or down. I did loosen the T-handle all the way but it makes no difference. Maybe I just have to be a bit more forceful. Rob

Those little screws at the base of the sleeve also press in against the post. All of this is likely to no avail however as with our vintage boats, years of leakage from the mast down into the column plus salt air have likely rusted and fused the counterweight that's inside the column to the column inner wall.

Zoom With leakage around the exterior of the compression post, the table may be frozen to the post. The interior of the sleeve around the compression post has a rubber gasket in it and after years of having the table locked in one position for dining only the gasket hardens and locks to the post. The only way I found to found to free it was to remove the table from the mount and then slowly work it free by moving it round and round the post and up and down little by little until it freed up. The bolt through the post belowthe table will not prevent the table from reaching the bed position on the sette but it will stop the counter weight from moving past that point. The counter weight should move freely in the compression post and is there to assist in moving the weight of the table up and down. I modified my table as per the example on this website and can now move table down for a bunk and up to the coach roof so we have no obstructions in the cabin when we're underway. We move the table to a medium height position so that we can chart on it. all in all the mods have worked well.

The mod to the table is listed in the Boat Info section under Hunter Owner Modifications - listed under 35.5 total mods equal 27. Rob, if you figure the line attached to the counterweight is well attached I'd give it a few good hard tugs to see if it will free up. If it does move keep on moving it little by little and it should finally move from top to bottom. If the mast is down removing the compression post is not a big deal, the weight can be moved then and the interior of the post and the weight can be cleaned up then. The table will move freely less the weight but will just take a bit more effort. Let me know how you do, Karl

Thanks Karl, I'll give this a try Rob

I have the same problem with the counter weight. Sprayed PB Blaster. Going down to the boat today. Will follow up an this post Bill

Went down to the boat to check on stuck counter weight after a can of PB. Still stuck. This time I will spray the can empty into a jar. A lot easier. Its about a cup and a half of PB. I will pour the contents into the opening by the rope roller and give it about 2 weeks to work.

Bill, Any luck??? Rob

Rob, Poured the whole can in a couple of weeks ago. Have not been there since, busy, holidays. As soon as I do I will post results Bill

Kings of Russia

The Comprehensive Guide to Moscow Nightlife

yacht saloon tables

Moscow’s nightlife scene is thriving, and arguably one of the best the world has to offer – top-notch Russian women, coupled with a never-ending list of venues, Moscow has a little bit of something for everyone’s taste. Moscow nightlife is not for the faint of heart – and if you’re coming, you better be ready to go Friday and Saturday night into the early morning.

This comprehensive guide to Moscow nightlife will run you through the nuts and bolts of all you need to know about Moscow’s nightclubs and give you a solid blueprint to operate with during your time in Moscow.

What you need to know before hitting Moscow nightclubs

Prices in moscow nightlife.

Before you head out and start gaming all the sexy Moscow girls , we have to talk money first. Bring plenty because in Moscow you can never bring a big enough bankroll. Remember, you’re the man so making a fuzz of not paying a drink here or there will not go down well.

Luckily most Moscow clubs don’t do cover fees. Some electro clubs will charge 15-20$, depending on their lineup. There’s the odd club with a minimum spend of 20-30$, which you’ll drop on drinks easily. By and large, you can scope out the venues for free, which is a big plus.

Bottle service is a great deal in Moscow. At top-tier clubs, it starts at 1,000$. That’ll go a long way with premium vodka at 250$, especially if you have three or four guys chipping in. Not to mention that it’s a massive status boost for getting girls, especially at high-end clubs.

Without bottle service, you should estimate a budget of 100-150$ per night. That is if you drink a lot and hit the top clubs with the hottest girls. Scale down for less alcohol and more basic places.

Dress code & Face control

Door policy in Moscow is called “face control” and it’s always the guy behind the two gorillas that gives the green light if you’re in or out.

In Moscow nightlife there’s only one rule when it comes to dress codes:

You can never be underdressed.

People dress A LOT sharper than, say, in the US and that goes for both sexes. For high-end clubs, you definitely want to roll with a sharp blazer and a pocket square, not to mention dress shoes in tip-top condition. Those are the minimum requirements to level the playing field vis a vis with other sharply dressed guys that have a lot more money than you do. Unless you plan to hit explicit electro or underground clubs, which have their own dress code, you are always on the money with that style.

Getting in a Moscow club isn’t as hard as it seems: dress sharp, speak English at the door and look like you’re in the mood to spend all that money that you supposedly have (even if you don’t). That will open almost any door in Moscow’s nightlife for you.

Types of Moscow Nightclubs

In Moscow there are four types of clubs with the accompanying female clientele:

High-end clubs:

These are often crossovers between restaurants and clubs with lots of tables and very little space to dance. Heavy accent on bottle service most of the time but you can work the room from the bar as well. The hottest and most expensive girls in Moscow go there. Bring deep pockets and lots of self-confidence and you have a shot at swooping them.

Regular Mid-level clubs:

They probably resemble more what you’re used to in a nightclub: big dancefloors, stages and more space to roam around. Bottle service will make you stand out more but you can also do well without. You can find all types of girls but most will be in the 6-8 range. Your targets should always be the girls drinking and ideally in pairs. It’s impossible not to swoop if your game is at least half-decent.

Basic clubs/dive bars:

Usually spots with very cheap booze and lax face control. If you’re dressed too sharp and speak no Russian, you might attract the wrong type of attention so be vigilant. If you know the local scene you can swoop 6s and 7s almost at will. Usually students and girls from the suburbs.

Electro/underground clubs:

Home of the hipsters and creatives. Parties there don’t mean meeting girls and getting drunk but doing pills and spacing out to the music. Lots of attractive hipster girls if that is your niche. That is its own scene with a different dress code as well.

What time to go out in Moscow

Moscow nightlife starts late. Don’t show up at bars and preparty spots before 11pm because you’ll feel fairly alone. Peak time is between 1am and 3am. That is also the time of Moscow nightlife’s biggest nuisance: concerts by artists you won’t know and who only distract your girls from drinking and being gamed. From 4am to 6am the regular clubs are emptying out but plenty of people, women included, still hit up one of the many afterparty clubs. Those last till well past 10am.

As far as days go: Fridays and Saturdays are peak days. Thursday is an OK day, all other days are fairly weak and you have to know the right venues.

The Ultimate Moscow Nightclub List

Short disclaimer: I didn’t add basic and electro clubs since you’re coming for the girls, not for the music. This list will give you more options than you’ll be able to handle on a weekend.

Preparty – start here at 11PM

Classic restaurant club with lots of tables and a smallish bar and dancefloor. Come here between 11pm and 12am when the concert is over and they start with the actual party. Even early in the night tons of sexy women here, who lean slightly older (25 and up).

The second floor of the Ugolek restaurant is an extra bar with dim lights and house music tunes. Very small and cozy with a slight hipster vibe but generally draws plenty of attractive women too. A bit slower vibe than Valenok.

Very cool, spread-out venue that has a modern library theme. Not always full with people but when it is, it’s brimming with top-tier women. Slow vibe here and better for grabbing contacts and moving on.

yacht saloon tables

High-end: err on the side of being too early rather than too late because of face control.

Secret Room

Probably the top venue at the moment in Moscow . Very small but wildly popular club, which is crammed with tables but always packed. They do parties on Thursdays and Sundays as well. This club has a hip-hop/high-end theme, meaning most girls are gold diggers, IG models, and tattooed hip hop chicks. Very unfavorable logistics because there is almost no room no move inside the club but the party vibe makes it worth it. Strict face control.

Close to Secret Room and with a much more favorable and spacious three-part layout. This place attracts very hot women but also lots of ball busters and fakes that will leave you blue-balled. Come early because after 4am it starts getting empty fast. Electronic music.

A slightly kitsch restaurant club that plays Russian pop and is full of gold diggers, semi-pros, and men from the Caucasus republics. Thursday is the strongest night but that dynamic might be changing since Secret Room opened its doors. You can swoop here but it will be a struggle.

yacht saloon tables

Mid-level: your sweet spot in terms of ease and attractiveness of girls for an average budget.

Started going downwards in 2018 due to lax face control and this might get even worse with the World Cup. In terms of layout one of the best Moscow nightclubs because it’s very big and bottle service gives you a good edge here. Still attracts lots of cute girls with loose morals but plenty of provincial girls (and guys) as well. Swooping is fairly easy here.

I haven’t been at this place in over a year, ever since it started becoming ground zero for drunken teenagers. Similar clientele to Icon but less chic, younger and drunker. Decent mainstream music that attracts plenty of tourists. Girls are easy here as well.

Sort of a Coyote Ugly (the real one in Moscow sucks) with party music and lots of drunken people licking each others’ faces. Very entertaining with the right amount of alcohol and very easy to pull in there. Don’t think about staying sober in here, you’ll hate it.

Artel Bessonitsa/Shakti Terrace

Electronic music club that is sort of a high-end place with an underground clientele and located between the teenager clubs Icon and Gipsy. Very good music but a bit all over the place with their vibe and their branding. You can swoop almost any type of girl here from high-heeled beauty to coked-up hipsters, provided they’re not too sober.

yacht saloon tables

Afterparty: if by 5AM  you haven’t pulled, it’s time to move here.

Best afterparty spot in terms of trying to get girls. Pretty much no one is sober in there and savage gorilla game goes a long way. Lots of very hot and slutty-looking girls but it can be hard to tell apart who is looking for dick and who is just on drugs but not interested. If by 9-10am you haven’t pulled, it is probably better to surrender.

The hipster alternative for afterparties, where even more drugs are in play. Plenty of attractive girls there but you have to know how to work this type of club. A nicer atmosphere and better music but if you’re desperate to pull, you’ll probably go to Miks.

Weekday jokers: if you’re on the hunt for some sexy Russian girls during the week, here are two tips to make your life easier.

Chesterfield

Ladies night on Wednesdays means this place gets pretty packed with smashed teenagers and 6s and 7s. Don’t pull out the three-piece suit in here because it’s a “simpler” crowd. Definitely your best shot on Wednesdays.

If you haven’t pulled at Chesterfield, you can throw a Hail Mary and hit up Garage’s Black Music Wednesdays. Fills up really late but there are some cute Black Music groupies in here. Very small club. Thursday through Saturday they do afterparties and you have an excellent shot and swooping girls that are probably high.

Shishas Sferum

This is pretty much your only shot on Mondays and Tuesdays because they offer free or almost free drinks for women. A fairly low-class club where you should watch your drinks. As always the case in Moscow, there will be cute girls here on any day of the week but it’s nowhere near as good as on the weekend.
