Live Review: Kenny Loggins @ Wolf Trap — 6/15/23

Live Review: Kenny Loggins @ Wolf Trap — 6/15/23

In the admittedly very humorous 2000s Channel 101 series “Yacht Rock,” a fictitious Kenny Loggins serves as the protagonist as the navigates a career of creating remarkable tunes in the genres of folk, soul, and country pop.

A managerial character loosely inspired by Tommy Mottola schemes to get Loggins under his thumb to write hit Hollywood soundtrack themes, declaring him to be “a hit machine with the heart of a rock-and-roller.”

Elements of all of this surfaced in the background during Kenny’s recent sold-out two-night stand at Wolf Trap, where much of the audience turned up in soft captain’s hats in homage to the “yacht rock” phenomenon and Kenny engaged a talented cover act collective called the Yacht Rock Revue to open the show. Most remarkably, the Loggins show, billed as his farewell tour, was a massive guitar attack that did indeed reveal the heart of a rock-and-roller.

At Wolf Trap on June 15, the second of two nights, Kenny briefly acknowledged the sea of yachting caps during his remarks, when in between songs he shared stories of getting started in Hollywood, working with soul singer Michael McDonald, and becoming a father to five children over the years.

The tales of fatherhood lent themselves to the show’s midpoint, where Loggins explained the evolution of “Return to Pooh Corner,” and how he strove to create an album that both children and adults would enjoy. And the show was dominated by Loggins’ credits with McDonald, including “This Is It,” the breakup song that lends its name to Kenny’s farewell tour.

Watch the official music video for “This Is It” by Kenny Loggins on YouTube:

Loggins and McDonald also co-wrote “Heart to Heart” and “What a Fool Believes” — additional songs that appeared early in the setlist. Kenny recalled collaborating before ever even meeting McDonald in person: As he drove up to McDonald’s home, he heard him working on “What a Fool Believes” from outside the home and started filling in a melody before he introduced himself.

Kenny Loggins began his career as part of the prolific duo Loggins and Messina, and Kenny nodded to that time with the heartwarming and memorable “Danny’s Song.” And Loggins sealed his fate as a forever part of the American pop culture landscape with a string of hard rocking ’80s soundtrack hits. The 75-year-old singer-songwriter performed three of the most indelible of those hits as his first encore at Wolf Trap: “I’m Alright” from Caddy Shack, “Danger Zone” from Top Gun, and “Footloose” from the movie of the same name.

Watch the official music video for “Danger Zone” by Kenny Loggins on YouTube:

As mentioned previously, the concert was a true guitar show, and of course, nowhere was this more true than during the march of the movie soundtrack hits. The entire Loggins band was extraordinary but two members really leaped out — Scott Bernard with his flowing hair and guitar god licks kept everyone entertained from stage right and Rick Cowling often centered the show with his gregarious demeanor and impressive musicality. Rick impressed further by holding his own as a fair Michael McDonald substitute in vocal parts that called for McDonald’s famous soulful baritone.

Loggins himself was naturally terrific. He was spry, eloquent, and sharp as a tack. Every move he made was honed by 50 years of stagecraft and performance, and he was an indisputable master of the song.

The “Yacht Rock” farce may have played fast and loose with some facts, but one thing it surely got right: You need some Kenny Loggins in your life.

Catch Kenny Loggins live on the This Is It — His Final Tour with USA dates through November.

The residency teaches middle school students about the expression of ideas through the artistic vehicle of mosaics. Student artists explore multiple art forms such as drawing, painting and sculpture to complete their mosaics, and select a specific ocean animal to be the subject of their artwork. This residency allows student artists to research and discuss environmental issues such as ocean pollution and convey their thoughts through a process-based project. Materials include ceramic, glass tiles and natural elements.

Refer to Toolkit page #19 to learn more about who can assist and provide guidance during this process.

With so many variables, (such as building condition, zoning and uses), artists and arts organizations should consult with Fairfax County staff in the Permit Application Center at 703-222-0801 and use the “ Permitting ” section of the toolkit.

Create a plan for a compliant project before investing organizational resources. Failure to comply with zoning or building code regulations may result in a Corrective Work Order or a Notice of Violation, which shuts the project down.

  • A compelling case for the need and community benefits for your interim arts space project will help sell your request for space use. Be clear about your mission, proposed program, audience participation level, and community impact. When approaching property owners, funders, and elected officials, refer to Toolkit page #3 for key points to discuss.
  • Craft and circulate a brief proposal using the parameters identified above. Include all the potential benefits and indicate whether there is a modest budget for rent, or if the space must be donated. Send this proposal directly to key contacts with a cover note that articulates what you are requesting from the recipient.
  • Leverage existing contacts including board members, audience members, volunteers, business owners and vendors, friends and neighbors, funders, and even elected officials. Learn more in the “ Finding A Space ” section of the toolkit.
  • If you see a vacant property that you think is a great fit for your arts activation, search the Fairfax County Department of Tax Administration for the property owner: https://icare.fairfaxcounty.gov/ffxcare/search/CommonSearch.aspx?mode=ADDRESS
  • Fairfax County Economic Development Authority has access to Costar to help you identify vacant properties. See Toolkit page #19, Important Contacts

This virtual residency provides students the opportunity to recount a specific narrative from a historical time period of their choosing through Hip-Hop dance choreography. During the residency students learn about the history of Hip-Hop culture, its beginnings in high-needs areas in the Bronx and how it became a global movement. Students explore Hip-Hop through interactive storytelling, observing dance performance videos and practicing movement basics. Students then collaborate with the artist to select a theme, music, movement techniques and choreography for a Hip-Hop performance. This program empowers and validates the students’ points of view and enables them to communicate through dance.

Washington, D.C., has given much to the musical world beyond its best-known exports; Duke Ellington, and the punk, and go-go scenes. Musician, broadcaster, and historian Ken Avis explores the area’s lesser-known, remarkable, and fascinating musical avenues and why they could only have happened here in the DMV area. Film and recordings bring legendary musicians to life as Avis examines how social change, technological development, and business innovation shaped the sounds that emerged from D.C.—a political town with a serious music habit. Discover music, stories and facts…and a lot of surprises as you hear the stories of Music City DC!

Award winning percussionist, composer and educator, Tom Teasley, delivers his unique world of rhythm and sound. Tom has traveled the world as a cultural envoy for the U.S. Department of State and shares musical examples of his travels as well as stories of the cultures from which this music emanates. He is currently working virtually with the US Embassy in Port au Prince, Haiti on a series of percussion workshops in addition to music business presentations. Other travels have taken him to China, Iraq, Korea, Oman, Jerusalem, Bahrain and others. Tom will also share his work on creating music for theatre which has earned him seven Helen Hayes Nominations and three awards. The residency consists of many musical and instrument demonstrations and performances and encourages participation.

Educating Decision-Makers = Advocacy

How You Make a Difference

One voice has considerable strength, especially when expressed collectively. Educating and advocating for the arts can occur through many ways:

  • In public forms including candidate rallies, composing emails and letters, attending official government meetings and offering testimony.
  • Interacting with decision-makers and their staff.
  • Inviting elected officials to programs or events and providing a private tour.

Category 2: Next Step Grant

Designed to be more intensive and tackle major issues, it provides technical assistance and funding to carry out a transformative capacity building project by providing consultant support before, during, and after the project. To apply, organizations must first submit a Letter of Intent and requires a substantial commitment from both staff and board of the selected organization. Possible Projects include:

  • Planning (strategic planning, fundraising plans, communications, growth opportunity, or business planning)
  • Board Development (Board Training, Governance Structure, Board Engagement Strategies)
  • Feasibility Studies
  • Marketing (plans or campaigns)
  • Strategic Relationships (mergers, partnerships)
  • Internal Operations (Financial management, websites)

Category 1: Organizational and Professional Development Grant

These grants help support and create greater organizational capacity to anticipate, prepare and adapt so that organizations can deliver and fulfill their mission. Possible Projects can include the following activities:

  • Financial management training
  • Program evaluation
  • Communications, marketing and rebranding
  • Professional development training or conferences
  • Facilitation of a board retreat
  • Upgrading technology, including new computers, website upgrades and design, and software

ArtsFairfax grants are awarded through a competitive process. The process begins with a staff review of each application to ensure its completeness and the applicant’s eligibility. Applications are then reviewed by a panel composed of arts professionals with experience in a variety of disciplines. The panel meetings are open to the public, and applicants are encouraged to attend and observe. Following the panel meetings, the Grants Committee, a standing committee including members of the ArtsFairfax Board of Directors, makes funding recommendations based upon the panel’s scores for approval by the ArtsFairfax Board of Directors.

Music returns to Wolf Trap, for a 50th anniversary season

yacht rock revue wolf trap

Finding the hottest show in town on July 1, 1971, required a trek out of the District and into the woods. We’re talking deep into the woods, at a national park turned performing arts enclave in Vienna where pianist Van Cliburn and the National Symphony Orchestra played the Filene Center’s grand opening show at Wolf Trap .

“People weren’t sure what to make of [Wolf Trap],” says Anthony Rudel, whose father, esteemed orchestra conductor Julius Rudel, led the NSO’s performance that night. “Only people who lived out in that area knew the area. But other than that, it was the road to Dulles Airport.”

That 1971 concert was also a defining moment for Rudel’s father, who was Wolf Trap’s first music director.

“He was the immigrant from Austria who came from nothing in 1938,” says Rudel, who is the general manager of music at WCRB in Boston. “This Austrian immigrant is now opening up the national concert hall in the park, Wolf Trap, and then, three months later, is opening up the Kennedy Center.”

Summer strikes a familiar note as music returns to Wolf Trap, Tanglewood and other outdoor venues

Wolf Trap’s beginnings tie back to philanthropist Catherine Filene Shouse, who in 1966 donated money and the land that would become Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts to the National Park Service. She had a fondness for music, specifically opera, which still has a visible presence at Wolf Trap through several programs and initiatives. But over the years, Wolf Trap has played host to virtually every type of performer on the planet.

Wolf Trap “is a national park, it literally belongs to all Americans,” says Arvind Manocha, president and CEO of Wolf Trap. “That is what we think about all the time, that everybody should feel like there’s something that happens at Wolf Trap that speaks to them, that appeals to them, that reflects them.”

That means, in a span of a week, you could see Train , Harry Connick Jr. and Yacht Rock Revue play at the Filene Center. And that’s not an exaggeration — it’s the actual schedule for late August. As Wolf Trap approaches its 50th anniversary, here are five fast facts about the sprawling 117-acre park’s history.

Wolf Trap holds the unique distinction as the only national park in the United States solely devoted to the arts. “I tell people that you can come to Wolf Trap, go hiking for two hours, have a beautiful picnic, and then go see a show,” Manocha says. Wolf Trap’s nonprofit foundation manages the programming, while the National Park Service maintains the park’s lush grounds. One way to explore the area is through Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Ellen Reid’s “ Soundwalk ,” a public art project that involves hikers using a GPS-enabled app that triggers music specifically tailored for certain locations around the park.

At Wolf Trap, this walk in the woods comes with its own soundtrack

The Filene Center has caught on fire — twice. The first one caused partial damage just before its opening in 1971, and another in 1982 completely destroyed the venue . According to Mary Knowles, daughter of one of the original Filene Center architects Edward Knowles, musicians who played at the wood-clad venue in the early days raved about the acoustics. “My father said musicians described how the entire theater resonated like an instrument,” she says. “I think the wood related to its surroundings, but it was actually part of why the acoustics were so good. Also, the dancers really appreciated the softness and the spring of the wooden stage floor.” The original Filene Center was constructed from Oregon red cedar, while the current structure is made from Douglas fir and southern yellow pine.

The National Symphony Orchestra has held a summer residency at Wolf Trap for the past 50 years. The NSO is one of Wolf Trap’s mainstay performers, and has reached out to new fans with its summer programming, such as its 2015 “ Pokémon: Symphonic Evolutions ” show where the orchestra played music from Pokémon video games, and its live soundtracking of popular films including “Back to the Future” and “Jurassic Park.” The NSO also frequently partners with outside collaborators for shows: Actress and singer Cynthia Erivo (July 1), Broadway veteran Norm Lewis (July 30-31) and soprano Renée Fleming (Aug. 6) are among the stars slated to perform with the orchestra this summer.

Opera is intricately woven in Wolf Trap’s DNA. Since its beginnings, Wolf Trap has been a major hub for opera in the United States, offering numerous initiatives including the Studio Artists program, which provides training to up-and-coming musicians. As a participant in the program over the past year, New Orleans mezzo-soprano Emily Treigle got to live out a family legacy. “Last year, we all had a number of opera scenes that we were able to perform in, which was super incredible,” she says. “I was in a scene from Robert Ward’s ‘The Crucible,’ which was funny because that’s actually an opera that my grandfather was in the world premiere of.” Treigle’s family ties run deep: Her grandfather sang in the inaugural show at the Filene Center in 1971 and her mother was also a part of a Wolf Trap opera training program in the ’80s.

The return of summer: Where to head back to water parks, concerts and outdoor movies

Lyle Lovett, Judy Collins and Mary Chapin Carpenter have played the venue more than 20 times. Those three artists are some of the acts that have performed the most at Wolf Trap. Others that played at the park frequently include John Prine (19 times), Emmylou Harris (19), the Beach Boys (18), Tony Bennett (18) and Bonnie Raitt (18). The Indigo Girls return to Wolf Trap on Sept. 22 for their 19th appearance, in concert with Ani DiFranco.

What to see at Wolf Trap this summer

Wolf Trap’s summer schedule looks similar to how it did in pre-pandemic times, with featured headliners running the gamut of musical styles. But one notable difference is the venue’s covid-19 policies: Through the end of July, the Filene Center will seat guests in socially distanced “pods,” including on the lawn, before returning to full capacity in August.

Fifty Years Together: A Celebration of Wolf Trap , July 1

Wolf Trap has invited the National Symphony Orchestra to perform at its 50th anniversary celebration, bringing things full circle. The orchestra will be joined by other decorated performers including Cynthia Erivo and pianist Joyce Yang. 8 p.m. $47.

Big Tony and Trouble Funk , July 18

There isn’t a more perfect soundtrack to celebrate the end of pandemic restrictions than the buoyant sounds of go-go. D.C. luminaries Big Tony and Trouble Funk will light up the park with special guests (and local music legends in their own right) Sugar Bear and DJ Kool. 8 p.m. $22.

Lindsey Stirling , Aug. 5

Stirling brings her boundless violin sound and high-energy dance moves to Wolf Trap to promote her latest album, “Artemis,” which was released shortly before the pandemic in September 2019. 8 p.m. $37.

Pink Martini featuring China Forbes , Aug. 11

Pink Martini is a multilingual band that can perform songs in more than 25 languages. The group bills itself as a “little orchestra” that crosses numerous styles and genres including jazz, pop and Latin. 8 p.m. $37.

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit , Sept. 14

Jason Isbell released his seventh album, “ Reunions ,” near the start of the pandemic, so it’s only now that the world gets to hear the poignant Americana offerings in a live setting. You’ll also want to get there early to see opening act Waxahatchee, whose recent release, the sunny Americana record “ Saint Cloud ,” pivots from her lo-fi catalogue. 7:30 p.m. $47.
