One of four people plucked from the ocean after a 40-foot yacht sank south of Discovery Island last Friday is dead, says the B.C. Coroners Service.

Spokesperson Ryan Panton said the coroners service is investigating the incident, which occurred about three nautical miles south of Discovery Island, east of Oak Bay, but could not reveal any additional details.

Three individuals and a dog in a 10-foot dinghy were located by a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter from Port Angeles, two hours after the initial mayday call was received by the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre at around 6 p.m. from the pleasure craft.

A fourth person was spotted in the water by a CH-149 Cormorant at around 9 p.m., about one nautical mile from the dinghy in the middle of the yacht’s debris field.

The man, who was “found to be unresponsive upon arrival,” was recovered by a Royal Canadian Air Force helicopter crew, said U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Michael Clark, adding that all four were U.S. citizens.

Clark said the MH-65 Dolphin helicopter was already airborne for scheduled operations and was diverted for the response.

Multiple sea and air units responded to the mayday call, including two aircraft based out of 19 Wing Comox — a CC-138 Hercules and a CH-149 Cormorant. Marine vessels deployed included the Canadian Coast Guard Ship Cape Calvert and 33 Oak Bay, a coast guard auxiliary vessel.

The U.S. Coast Guard said the dinghy contained two teenage girls and an adult woman who were all showing signs of hypothermia and were airlifted to Victoria General Hospital.

The dog was picked up by a Canadian Coast Guard vessel shortly after.

The yacht, named A Little Serenity, was registered in Kenmore, Washington, a suburb northeast of Seattle.

The U.S. Coast Guard said the sea at the time of the incident was swelling with five-foot waves and windspeeds were at 23 mph.

yacht sinking near victoria bc

A dramatic rescue operation took place off the coast of Victoria over the weekend, as three individuals and their canine companion were saved from a sinking vessel.

The incident unfolded on Friday, June 30th, approximately two miles south of Victoria, prompting a swift response from the United States Coast Guard (USCG) and the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG).

The distress call came in at around 7 p.m., with the Canadian Coast Guard receiving the urgent message from the vessel.

The 40-foot boat had encountered a perilous situation, taking on water and eventually sinking. On board were two teenage girls, an adult woman, and a dog.

#BREAKING (1/2) Last night around 7 pm, a #USCG aircrew from Port Angeles rescued 2 teenage females and 1 adult woman from a dinghy in the Salish Sea about 2 miles south of Victoria, B.C., The 40-foot vessel they were aboard took on water and quickly sank… pic.twitter.com/DWxWTDg5gj — USCGPacificNorthwest (@USCGPacificNW) July 1, 2023

Fortunately, the US Coast Guard had a helicopter already airborne in the vicinity, allowing for a rapid deployment to the scene.

The aircrew from Port Angeles located a partially submerged dinghy with three individuals and a dog desperately clinging to it. The 13-year-old, 15-year-old, and adult were quickly rescued from the dinghy.

Meanwhile, the Canadian Coast Guard vessel sprang into action to save the dog, ensuring that even the four-legged member of the group made it to safety.

While the trio were not dressed for the conditions, they were wearing life jackets, which played a crucial role in their survival.

Following the rescue, all three individuals were showing severe symptoms of hypothermia and were quickly transported to Victoria General Hospital.

Weather on scene was reported to be winds of 23 mph and 5ft seas. @PenDailyNews — USCGPacificNorthwest (@USCGPacificNW) July 1, 2023

According to the coast guard, the group, from the US, had departed from Seattle but it was unclear where they were heading and what caused the vessel to sink.

VICTORIA — The British Columbia Coroners Service says two people have died after a Canadian fishing boat sank in waters west of Vancouver Island.

The United States Coast Guard says it received a distress call early Tuesday advising the Arctic Fox II was in trouble more than 100 kilometres off the northwestern tip of Washington State.

The 20-metre boat was gone by the time a helicopter reached the scene, but the coast guard says a single crew member was rescued from a lifeboat.

The bodies of the other two crew members, who were both Canadian, have been recovered and the coroners service says they have been flown to Victoria.

The cause of the sinking is undetermined.

U.S. officials say the vessel went down in international waters, but Canada will lead the investigation and American crews will assist if required.

One dead after vessel capsizes near Wreck Beach Monday

A Coast Guard hovercraft vessel is seen on Spanish Banks

One person has died after a vessel capsized near Wreck Beach in Vancouver Monday afternoon, according to Vancouver Fire Rescue Services.

Assistant Fire Chief Keith Stewart says an unidentified male was brought to shore by the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) and pronounced dead at the scene after paramedics attempted to resuscitate him.

Lieutenant Michelle Scott with Maritime Forces Pacific says Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) Victoria received a call about a sinking vessel at approximately 1:30 p.m. Monday afternoon.

A Coast Guard hovercraft vessel is seen on Spanish Banks

Two Canadian Coast Guard vessels and a CH-149 Cormorant helicopter were deployed to conduct a search, according to Scott.

BC Emergency Health Services says it received a call at 2:41 p.m. and responded with two ambulances and a supervisor.

The CCG dive team was able to locate and clear the vessel from on board the CCG hovercraft Siyay.

The search ended at 6:20 p.m., Scott says, as it’s believed only one person was aboard the vessel when it sunk.

RCMP were on scene and are now conducting an investigation.

Complex salvage efforts underway after 3 boats sink in Campbell River

Salvage crews are hard at work in Campbell River, B.C., recovering three sunken vessels at a local marina.

The first boat went down in November, and two more sank on Saturday morning.

Salvaging the boats will be a complicated matter, as two vessels are tied together at the bottom of the Discovery Harbour Marina.

Bill McDonald lives aboard a vessel at the marina but didn't realize there was a problem until he saw divers at work trying to recover the two vessels that sunk Saturday.

The sunken ships include a 17-metre former fishing vessel and an eight-metre tug boat.

"The odd thing about it is that when they go down they don't make any noise," said McDonald.

"You'd think there'd be hissing like a whale coming down. No, they just disappear," he said.

McDonald says Saturday's wrecks were just the latest in a series to go under.

"You can pretty well make the assessment of which ones are going to go because they've been neglected, particularly the old plank-on-frame wood boats," he said.

The boats that sank Saturday join a third vessel which sank in the marina in November.

On Monday, crews were still trying to contain any fluid leaks coming from the three boats, with extra booms being placed along the most recent sunken vessels.

"Luckily, in this case, one of the owners is being very diligent," said Jeff Brady, superintendent of environmental response with the Canadian Coast Guard.

"We're working with them. They've hired contractors," he said. "Unfortunately the other case is – not so much."

The coast guard says action can be taken under the Canada Shipping Act or under a new Wrecked, Abandoned, Hazardous Vessels Act.

Because the two vessels that sank on Saturday went down together, salvagers expect it to take until at least the weekend for cleanup efforts to wrap up.
