The body of a fourth person has been found after a sailing boat capsized and ran aground on a beach in central Portugal, the navy said Saturday.
The Danish-flagged pleasure boat capsized on Friday around a kilometre off one of the beaches at Santa Cruz, around 60 kilometres (37 miles) north of Lisbon.
The boat was hit by the strong swells caused by Storm Ciaran, which killed more than a dozen other people across Europe.
The first three victims were found dead on the shore  and were not wearing life jackets.
The body of a second woman was found inside the wrecked boat, Portuguese Navy spokesman Jose Sousa Luis told AFP on Saturday.
Three of the victims, a 56-year-old man and the two women aged 46 and 61, were Danish nationals, said the navy spokesman, adding that the nationality of the fourth victim, a 57-year-old man, was not yet known.
Although Portugal was not directly affected by the storm, the central and northern coastal regions had been put on a red alert due to the rough seas, with waves exceeding seven metres (23 feet) in height.
A new storm, named Domingos by the Spanish meteorological agency, was due to pass off Portugal on Saturday and Sunday, with waves that could reach up to nine metres high, according to the IPMA.

A tourist boat off the coast of the Algarve capsized on Monday (20 February), leaving passengers in fear for their lives.
The vessel was sailing about 600 metres off the Portuguese coast, south of Alfanzina lighthouse, in the municipality of Lagoa, when it began taking on water.
Passengers onboard included British nationals and comprised 36 adults and four children.
Dramatic pictures show the boat, which was returning from a trip to the famous Benagil sea cave, upturned and mostly underwater.
An alert was received at around 1.25pm with members of the Portimao Maritime Police and Ferragudo Lifeguard Station immediately despatched to the scene.
Upon arrival, they found all the passengers wearing life jackets in the boat.
All passengers were rescued with the aid of a nearby tourist boat and the Ferragudo Lifeguard Station boat.
Troy French from London, who was onboard the vessel, described the incident as âa really bad experience and very scaryâ.
Loading....
Speaking to the Daily Mail , he said: âI was on the phone to some of my colleagues back in England and then I looked behind me and there was lots of water coming into the boat.
âThe crew started to panic and they started lifting some emergency things up and the water started going into the engine and it was smoking.
âThey got everyone to move to the front of the boat and then the back of the boat was sinking, sinking, sinking to the point where everyone just started jumping into the water.â
He added: âA lot of peoples' life jackets were failing and weren't activating when people were going into the water.
âI'm a confident swimmer but I was swallowing water and I was panicking for people whose life jackets weren't working properly. I'm just so glad that everyone made it out to safety.â
Mr Frenchâs friend, Lila Evangelista, also from London, was onboard and is unable to swim.
She said: âI thought I was going to die.
âThe water wasn't really high to start with and I was calm but then it started rising very quickly and I began to panic.â
In a statement , authorities confirmed that passengers were then taken to Portimao Marina, where paramedics, Portimao volunteer firefighters, Lagoa volunteer firefighters, Civil Protection officers and the Portuguese Red Cross were waiting.
âSome were showing signs of hypothermia and they were evaluated then assisted by the medical teams at the scene, although they didn't require special medical assistance,â it read.
The PortimĂŁo Maritime Police have opened an investigation to find out what happened.
At present, it is not known what caused the accident.

36 people rescued after tour boat capsizes off southern Portugal
The National Maritime Authority of Portugal (Autoridade Maritima Nacional; AMN) has reported that local partner agencies have successfully rescued all 36 passengers and crew of a tour boat that capsized off the country’s southern region of Algarve on Monday, February 20.
The vessel was underway about 600 metres off the coast of the municipality of Lagoa when it suffered water ingress at around 13:20 local time on Monday.
Personnel from the Portuguese Maritime Police as well as the crews of some Good Samaritan vessels deployed to an area just off Alfanzina Lighthouse in Lagoa and found the survivors wearing lifejackets and drifting in the water near the overturned and partially sunken tour boat.
All 36 survivors were pulled out of the water and brought to nearby PortimĂŁo. Some of the survivors showed signs of hypothermia and were promptly treated by responding medical teams.
The capsized boat was later raised and towed to PortimĂŁo by a salvage company hired by the owners.
The AMN said the maritime police is preparing to begin an investigation into the incident.

Thirty-six tourists rescued after tour boat capsizes off Portugal
Wednesday, February 22nd, 2023
Written by: Marine Industry News
A group of tourists say they were lucky to survive after their tour boat capsized off the coast of the Algarve in southern Portugal on Monday afternoon (20 February 2023), and several lifejackets failed to activate.
The National Maritime Authority of Portugal (Autoridade Maritima Nacional; AMN) reports the vessel had 36 people on board, including four children, when it began rapidly taking on water around half a mile from the town of Carvoeiro. Sources informed The Sun that passengers included at least five Brits and two Irish nationals, alongside French, Belgian, Canadian, Swiss, and South Korean holidaymakers.
A distress alert was issued at 1.20pm local time. AMN says members of the PortimĂŁo Maritime Police of PortimĂŁo and Ferragudo Lifeguard Station were immediately sent to the site. Several other good samaritan vessels had arrived on the scene swiftly.
âI thought I was going to die,” tourist Lila Evangelista from London tells The Sun . The water wasnât really high to start with, and I was calm but then it started rising very quickly, and I began to panic. The coastguards came a little bit late when everyone was already in the big boat that picked up most of those that ended up in the water.”
Fellow passenger Troy French adds: âIâm not exactly sure what happened. I was on the phone to some of my colleagues back in England, and then I looked behind me, and there was lots of water coming into the boat. The crew started to panic, and they started lifting some emergency things up, and the water started going into the engine — it was smoking.”
French tells the newspaper that the back of the boat rapidly started sinking, forcing people to jump into the ocean.
âA lot of people’s lifejackets were failing and werenât activating when people were going into the water,” he continues. âIt was a really bad experience and very scary.”
Upon the arrival of the rescue vessels, almost all passengers had reportedly been in the water for over 10 minutes. Everybody was rescued with the support of a tourist boat that was nearby and the Ferragudo Lifeguard Station boat.
Some passengers were showing signs of hypothermia and received treatment. No injuries have been reported.
After the rescue, the capsized tour boat was raised and towed to PortimĂŁo by a salvage company hired by the owners.
The maritime police are now preparing to begin an investigation into the incident.

Lifeguards successfully save 13 people after tourist boat capsizes
By Kim Schiffmann, in Algarve · 16 Aug 2019, 01:00 · 5 Comments
Three of the people had to be taken to hospital after the accident, none of them with life threatening injuries.
The causes of the accident, which occurred around 5.30pm on 10 August, are not yet known. According to Jornal Noticias, two children aged around five, along with two women, spent a few minutes in the water under the boat where they found an air pocket enabling them to breathe.
The victims were saved by four young lifeguards from the company AquaForm, hired by the Lagoa City Council for beach surveillance. The boat accident occurred in the Benagil Cave, the most famous cave in the Algarve, much sought after and visited by tourist boats.
“There were people around the boat, others underneath it and people screaming in panic” said a source from the rescue team. The four young lifeguards then rescued the 12 passengers and one crew member.
After the rescue, two people were reportedly taken to Faro Hospital, one suspected to have an arm fracture, and a third to Portimão Hospital due to an anxiety attack.
Among the victims were Portuguese nationals and tourists of other nationalities, namely Spanish and French.
Three days after the incident the Mayor of Lagoa, Luis Encarnação, went to Benagil Beach to compliment and praise the act of courage and professionalism of the lifeguards who successfully rescued the victims of the accident.
Despite the level of panic, these rescuers, hired by the Lagoa City Council to supervise the beach, acted calmly to complete the rescue operation successfully.
The high demand for visiting the Benagil cave gives rise to frequent emergency situations, hence the municipality has been reinforcing the available human and material resources from year to year, so that these situations are minimised and the need for eventual intervention is faster and with better assistance to bathers and visitors”, said a statement from Lagoa Council.

Brit ‘thought she was going to die’ after tourist boat capsizes in Algarve
Share this with
A British woman feared for her life when a tourist boat she was on suddenly started sinking.
Lila Evangelista was among a group of 36 people, which included four children, on a boat off the Algarve in Portugal on Monday afternoon.
Somehow, water got into the boat and the vessel was sinking âwithin three minutesâ.
Lila was also one of the multiple people whose lifejackets were not activating properly.
The Londoner said: âI thought I was going to die. The water wasnât really high to start with and I was calm but then it started rising very quickly and I began to panic.
âThe coastguards came a little bit late when everyone was already in the big boat that picked up most of those that ended up in the water.â
Her friend Troy French, also from London, said: âI was on the phone to some of my colleagues back in England and then I looked behind me and there was lots of water coming into the boat.
âThe crew started to panic and they started lifting some emergency things up and the water started going into the engine and it was smoking.
âThey got everyone to move to the front of the boat and then the back of the boat was sinking, sinking, sinking to the point where everyone just started jumping into the water.
âA lot of peopleâs lifejackets were failing and werenât activating when people were going into the water. It was a really bad experience and very scary.
âIâm a confident swimmer but I was swallowing water and I was panicking for people whose lifejackets were werenât working properly. Iâm just so glad that everyone made it out so safety.â
The pair said it took around 10 to 15 minutes to get the group, which included five Brits and two Irish nationals, to safety.
The dramatic events took place just before 1.30pm, as the group was returning from the famous Benagil sea cave near Alfanzina Lighthouse, half a mile from the resort of Carvoeiro.
Portugalâs National Maritime Authority said: âMembers of the Portimao Maritime Police of Portimao and Ferragudo Lifeguard Station were immediately sent to the site. Several other tourist vessels also headed to the area.
âThe people who were on the boat were all in the water when they arrived with their life jackets on.
âThey were rescued with the support of a tourist boat that was nearby and the Ferragudo Lifeguard Station boat.
âSome were showing signs of hypothermia and they were evaluated then assisted by the medical teams at the scene, although they didnât require special medical assistance.â
An investigation into how the boat sank is currently underway.

Three people died when a sailing boat capsized on Friday and ran aground on a beach in central Portugal, where the coast has seen heavy swells caused by Storm Ciaran, naval authorities said.
The Danish-flagged pleasure boat capsized around a kilometre off one of the beaches at Santa Cruz, in the municipality of Torres Vedras, around 60 kilometres (37 miles) north of Lisbon, the National Maritime Authority (AMN) said in a statement.
The victims, two men and a woman whose ages and nationalities were not immediately known were found dead on the shore near the wreckage of the boat and were not wearing life jackets, Portuguese Navy spokesman Jose Sousa Luis told AFP.
The yacht had left the port of Peniche, around 30 kilometres north of Santa Cruz, on Friday morning with three people on board, he added.
Portugal was not directly affected by Storm Ciaran, which has claimed a dozen lives elsewhere in Europe.
However, the National Meteorological Institute (IPMA) has placed the country's central and northern coastal regions on red alert due to the very rough seas, with waves that can exceed seven metres (23 feet) in height.
A new storm, named Domingos by the Spanish meteorological agency, was due to pass off Portugal on Saturday and Sunday, with waves that could reach up to nine metres high, according to the IPMA.
